Abstract (sommario):
Windows are an essential part of almost every civil building. The existing approach for designing windows is based on ensuring minimum requirements to provide natural lighting functions, thermal protection, etc. This approach does not take into account the interrelationship of certain technical characteristics of windows (for example, heat and lighting characteristics). This leads to the appearance of typical problems at the stage of operating the building (insufficient day light, poor ventilation, etc.). In this work, an analysis of functional and technical requirements of windows of civil buildings was conducted. The review of modern researches of optimal window designs and interrelation of certain technical characteristics of window between themselves was conducted. On the basis of this analysis, the concept of a new complex window design method was proposed. This method is based on the fact that windows are both bearing and enclosing elements of the building. The use of this method will create the standard design solutions of windows for civil buildings of different functional purposes and different climatic areas of construction.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAdditive Manufacturing (AM) brought new design freedom and possibilities that enable design and manufacturing of products with new forms and functionalities. To utilise these possibilities a new design approach emerged, Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM), that contains methods and tools for supporting AM oriented design process. Designers working with AM are aware of the need to apply DfAM and AM possibilities in conceptual design phase where they have the most significant influence on product architecture and form but are facing a lack of suitable DfAM approaches for early design phases. Therefore, the presented research is investigating possibilities of storing and representing AM knowledge in the form of design principles to be used in the conceptual design phase. The paper proposes conceiving of Design Principles for Additive Manufacturing repository where formalised AM knowledge is stored in the form of design principles and structured based on function criteria. In the paper, various elements of design principle representation are discussed, as well as their role in the conceptual design process.

Abstract (sommario):
Teacher beliefs for conceptualisations of feedback should facilitate pupil development. However, to what extent does the conception of feedback in assessment for learning influence pupil aspirations as commanded by the Malaysian Education Development Plan? Thus, this study is conducted to explore the degree of influence of the conceptions of feedback factors on Pupil Aspiration. A survey research design is used in this study using a self-report inventory on feedback conceptions and pupil aspirations. The participants involved are 490 student teachers who have completed their teaching practical in the government schools in their previous semester. The feedback conception inventory adapted from the Teacher Conceptions of Feedback (TCoF) is used to measure the conception of feedback and the instrument for Pupil Aspiration is developed by the researchers. A structural equation modelling software, the Analysis of Moment Structures was used to test the hypothesized relationship. The analysis involves two-stage approach. Results of the study indicated that the proposed model was supported, and thus revealing that feedback conceptions was associated with Pupil Aspirations. Ten inter-correlated constructs had good psychometric properties. All the nine constructs of feedback conceptions loaded positively on pupil aspirations. The findings will give rise to further hypotheses which could close the gap of the research.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the definitionof interactive tools and methods for sound design, that involve user experience in the design process. We propose an experimental paradigm for studying sound perception, based on the interactive optimization of sounds. Inparticular, we use Interactive Genetic Algorithms (IGAs) to solve two optimization problems: the design of the exterior sound of an electric or hybrid vehicle, that is easily detectable while not being too unpleasant, as well as the design of sounds for the interior of an autonomous vehicle. Through these examples, we show that IGAs are promising methods to be used in the proposed paradigm. We also propose a method for analyzing and generalizing the individual results obtained during an interactive optimization experiment. Through experiments, we show that the proposed method allows for making sound design recommandations that are relevant for the optimization problem. Finally, we propose an informed method for reducing the design space prior to an interactive optimization experiment. We show, through experiments, that reducing the design space with the proposed method improves the quality of thesounds found during the optimization process

Canbaz, Baris.

Abstract (sommario):
In the product dimensioning phase of a distributed design, inconsistencies can emerge among design objectives as well as among working procedures of heterogeneous subsystems. In this phase, design actors which compose subsystems must collaborate concurrently, since their works are linked to each other through dimensioning couplings among their sub-problems. Inconsistencies through these couplings yield thus to design conflicts. The issue is how to obtain a collaborative convergence to satisfy the global and individual objectives of design actors when making design decisions under uncertainty. The objective of this dissertation is to propose a model for preventing and resolving design conflicts in order to obtain a collaborative convergence, while overcoming the design uncertainty through Set-based Design (SBD). Design attitudes are modeled with Belief-Desire-Intention paradigm to explore inconsistencies and manage conflicts in design processes. The conventional bottom-up approach is thus extended through agent-based attitude modeling techniques. In this approach, design agents can set requirements directly on their wellbeing values that represent how their design targets are likely to be met at a given moment of the design process. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of this approach, providing a variety of agent attitudes. Compared to conventional bottom-up and top-down design approaches, the results reveal a fewer number of design conflicts and a reduced aggregated conflict intensity. Constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) techniques and design attitudes are both applied to detect and justify design conflicts of heterogeneous design agents. A novel cooperative CSP (CoCSP) is developed in order to resolve design conflicts through compromising constraint restriction. The conflict resolution system can be adopted for different proposed strategies which take into account the solidarity architecture of design agents. The simulation results show that while promoting solidarity in distributed design by helping agents that suffer, the conflict intensity is reduced, and better design results are obtained

Abstract (sommario):
The design capitalization becomes a important element for collaborative work since this one comprises individual episodes. It passes by the conservation of the design reasoning and intentions traces. To this end, the individual designer needs to be assisted by a system which we called design intent system. The ideal of such a system was subdivided in modules and described. We were interested particularly to the CAD systems, which we want to compare with this ideal system. To arrive there, we undertook to analyze a design sequence using CAD tools. We adopted the protocol analysis method, where the designer verbalizes his thoughts in the course, or after his work (Concurrent Think Aloud or CTA, Retrospective Think Aloud or RTA). Four design experiments were thus carried out with the participation of four different designers. The CTA analysis enabled us to better understand the design using CAD tools and to propose a activities model. This model have six elements: observation, design intents formalization, design reasoning, representation intents formalization, reasoning for the representation and action. The links between the elements are represented in the model. A comparison between the CTA and the RTA was then carried out. This comparison allowed to detect some insufficiencies of CAD tool, used for the design intents representation. To contribute to mitigate these insufficiencies, we proposed a framework, which allowed to attach the design intents to the product CAD model

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis aims at contributing to an economic analysis of the design process. Therethore a design process model of understanding is realized. This model is based on three points of view of the design process : a decision point of view, a productive point of view and an organizationnal point of view. This understanding model allows us to evaluate the design process. In fine, this work shows that the design process is + on the heart of the innovation process ;. The theoretical corollary is that all improvement in understanding of the design process would increase our comprehension of the innovation process. Its practical corollary is that design process rationalization enhances the innovation process itself

Abstract (sommario):
The knowledge of the functioning of the human sensory system by the designer, can contribute to the creation of concepts and initial alternatives of design solution in the initial phases of the projects. It can effectively give specific information on the sensory, cognitive and motor capacities of users. However, making this information systematically available is still an emerging practice in architecture, industrial design and engineering. In this context, this Ph.D. thesis aims to develop a support tool for multidisciplinary teams in the creation of concepts and alternative solutions, user centered, within the framework of Architecture, Industrial Design and Product Engineering, considering three conceptual bases: Sensory System, Usability and Universal Design. The research method took place in four stages: (1) the study of the literature focused on the three conceptual bases and on project development methods, (2) the development of the tool, based on a user-centered approach by mobilizing students and professors from Master and Doctorate programs in France and Brazil and professionals from industry, (3) the evaluation of the tool by a panel of Brazilian experts from different disciplines and having experience in project development and finally (4) analyzing the results which validate the functions of the tool. Through simple and intuitive use on a digital platform, it contributes to collaborative work by providing more complete information allowing the creation of concepts and initial alternatives of design solutions

Abstract (sommario):
Emulsion based chemical products, which belong to the category of micro-structured chemical products, have a broad range of commercial applications. Despite their importance, there is not a general methodology for their design. With the aim to contribute to the progress on this matter, this research presents a product design methodology focused on emulsion design with the following characteristics: it proposes methods for customer needs analysis, product ideas generation and selection of the best product alternative. It considers the multivariate nature of emulsion design by taking into account the multiple effects of design variables into product properties. It integrates sustainability concepts into the product design process. The methodology comprises three design stages: needs stage, ideas generation stage and ideas selection stage. In the needs stage, customer needs are first analyzed and classified according to their effect on customer satisfaction and second translated into product specifications with the aid of experts and customers. The input is customer needs, i.e., statements expressing customers’ desires about the product, and the output corresponds to product specifications, i.e., product characteristics that can be measured. To perform this stage two methods are used: Kano model and Quality Functional Deployment. In ideas generation stage, product concepts accomplishing product specifications are generated in three sub-steps: First, problem specifications are classified into a predefined group of design sub-problems. Second, each sub-problem is connected with one or more pre-defined solution strategies through a prefilled relational matrix. Third, compatible solution strategies are selected and connected to ingredients and processing conditions through a second relational matrix. As result, a set of product concepts is generated. Thisprocedure is developed by the implementation of two relational matrices proposed in this research based on emulsion science and expert knowledge. The first connects sub-problems with solution strategies and the second connects solution strategies with ingredients and processing conditions. In the selection stage, generated product concepts are evaluated according to product specifications. In addition, appropriated sustainability indicators are included to assess and rank product alternatives according to a global sustainability index. To perform this stage, a set of indicators are selected and integrated by the implementation of multi-criteria analysis methods. The application of the methodology is exposed with a case study: the design of a moisturizing cream

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Statically balanced mechanisms are well known in various appearances of counterweighed beams, and systems where undesired mass is balanced by means of compensation springs. Similarly, springs can be designed to balance other springs. Besides the application of spring force compensation, many other kinds of mechanisms can benefit from the concept of balanced spring mechanisms. This paper introduces a lucid and logical methodology for the conception of statically balanced spring mechanisms. Based on constancy of system potential energy, a set of elementary rules is derived for the modification of a standard configuration with idealized springs. A number of examples are included to illustrate the versatility of the methodology, and to demonstrate the application potential of balanced spring mechanisms in general mechanical engineering.

Abstract (sommario):
Driving simulators (DS) are an indispensable developmental tool in the automotive industry. Versatile areas of application all profit from the high degree of reproducibility and safety of DS. The upcoming demands for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with respect to urban traffic situations result in increasing DS requirements in regard to motion envelope and system dynamics [1]. To fulfill those increased requirements, modern-day DS show up to 12 degrees of freedom (DOF) whilst comprising multiple drive mechanisms. These improvements come with the disadvantage of creating a complex system with increased moving mass of about 80 t. Thus, a link between moving mass and motion envelope is caused, limiting either motion envelope or system dynamics. Mobile dynamic DS solve the core problem of the increased moving mass. The proposed design of a Wheeled Mobile Driving Simulators (WMDS) shows three self-propelled and active steerable wheels that allow translational motion and yaw [2]. The main idea is based on the assumption that a wheeled system, whose propulsion is limited by friction forces, is suitable to simulate dynamics of vehicles that are also limited by tire friction forces. An additional system provides cabin tilt. Avoiding the conventional rail systems, which mainly cause the moving mass increase, results in a light weight concept [3]. The design and construction of the WMDS are carried out at the Institute of Automotive Engineering (Fahrzeugtechnik Darmstadt: FZD), Germany since 2010. This paper shows the evaluation of a suitable design — by the standards of modern product development — in general for mobile dynamic DS and specifically for WMDS. Furthermore, this paper shows the selection of the individual components and overall properties as well as limitations of the prototype.

Abstract (sommario):
SEERNet’s goal is to enable alignment of research on digital learning platforms to the Institute of Education Sciences’ Standards for Excellence in Education Research (SEER) and thereby make research more rigorous, transparent, actionable, inclusive, and focused on consequential impacts. While researchers have long aspired to study problems of value to the field, the conception of research questions rarely is in partnership with practitioners. Without voices from the field, researchers do not have the deep understanding of educator, student, and system needs that are essential for ensuring research will impact decision-making. This paper will discuss a national call for involving practitioners in research question design, strategies for partnerships with practitioners, and SEERNet’s guiding principles for practitioner engagement. It will also introduce how needs and research question ideas were developed through SEERNet’s Office Hours.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
During the lifecycle of a bridge, deterioration of the concrete deck originates from many sources, e.g., corrosion due to water infiltration in conjunction with chlorides from the use of de-icing salts. Such deterioration may be affected by any one of the following six actions relevant to a bridge from conception to demolition: design, construction, in-service conditions, maintenance, repair and rehabilitation, and replacement. Many researchers have studied the relationships between these sources and their consequences. However, the relationship between construction defects and inspection practices, and its impact on the deterioration process has not yet been identified. This project focuses on the development of predictive models to assess the impact that defects present during concrete bridge deck construction may have on the lifecycle performance of the bridge deck in terms of the chemical and environmental deterioration relevant to Indiana. Based on the relevant cost information from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), a methodology is developed here to determine the potential costs associated with this deterioration. Recommendations relevant to construction and inspection and data collection practices are discussed to improve future bridge construction and inspection practices. The models and methods developed in this work will enable INDOT to better predict the accelerated deterioration of a concrete deck when a construction defect has been identified and the associated additional cost.

Abstract (sommario):
Whereas at the end of the 20th century there were still high expectations associated with the use of new media in terms of a democratisation of social discourse and new potential for citizens to participate in political decision-making, disillusionment is now spreading. Even today, the internet is often seen only as a technical tool for the transmission of information and communication, which serves as a structural supplement to "real" discourse and decision-making processes. In fact, however, the use of new media can open up additional, previously non-existent possibilities for well-founded and substantial citizen participation, especially at regional and supra-regional level. According to the results of this study, the informal, mediative procedures for conflict resolution in the context of high-risk planning decisions, which are now also increasingly used at the regional level, have two main problem areas. Firstly, in the conception and design chosen so far, they do not offer citizens direct access to the procedure. Citizens are given almost no opportunities to exert substantial influence on the content and procedure of the process, or on the solutions found in the process. So far, this has not been remedied by the use of new media. On the other hand, it is becoming apparent that the results negotiated in the procedure are not, or only inadequately, reflected in the subsequent sovereign decision. This means that not only valuable resources for identifying the problem situation and for integrative problem-solving remain unused, but it is also not possible to realise the effects anticipated with the participation procedures within the framework of context or reflexive self-management. With the aim of advancing the development of institutionally oriented approaches at the practice level, this study discusses potential solutions at the procedural level. This takes into account legal implications as well as the action logics, motives and intentions of the actors involved and aims to improve e-government structures. It becomes evident that opening up informal participation procedures for citizen participation at the regional level can only be realised through the (targeted) use of new media. However, this requires a fundamentally new approach not only in the participation procedures carried out but also, for example, in the conception of information or communication offerings. Opportunities for improving the use of the results obtained from the informal procedures in the (sovereign) decision-making process as well as the development of potentials in the sense of stronger self-control of social subsystems are identified in a stronger interlinking of informal and sovereign procedures. The prerequisite for this is not only the establishment of suitable structures, but above all the willingness of decision-makers to allow citizens to participate in decision-making, as well as the granting of participation opportunities and rights that go beyond those previously granted in sovereign procedures.

Maternal, Fetal, and Child Outcomes of Mental Health Treatments in Women: A Systematic Review of Perinatal Pharmacologic Interventions. Abstract (sommario):
Background. Untreated maternal mental health disorders can have devastating sequelae for the mother and child. For women who are currently or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding, a critical question is whether the benefits of treating psychiatric illness with pharmacologic interventions outweigh the harms for mother and child. Methods. We conducted a systematic review to assess the benefits and harms of pharmacologic interventions compared with placebo, no treatment, or other pharmacologic interventions for pregnant and postpartum women with mental health disorders. We searched four databases and other sources for evidence available from inception through June 5, 2020 and surveilled the literature through March 2, 2021; dually screened the results; and analyzed eligible studies. We included studies of pregnant, postpartum, or reproductive-age women with a new or preexisting diagnosis of a mental health disorder treated with pharmacotherapy; we excluded psychotherapy. Eligible comparators included women with the disorder but no pharmacotherapy or women who discontinued the pharmacotherapy before pregnancy. Results. A total of 164 studies (168 articles) met eligibility criteria. Brexanolone for depression onset in the third trimester or in the postpartum period probably improves depressive symptoms at 30 days (least square mean difference in the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, -2.6; p=0.02; N=209) when compared with placebo. Sertraline for postpartum depression may improve response (calculated relative risk [RR], 2.24; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.95 to 5.24; N=36), remission (calculated RR, 2.51; 95% CI, 0.94 to 6.70; N=36), and depressive symptoms (p-values ranging from 0.01 to 0.05) when compared with placebo. Discontinuing use of mood stabilizers during pregnancy may increase recurrence (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR], 2.2; 95% CI, 1.2 to 4.2; N=89) and reduce time to recurrence of mood disorders (2 vs. 28 weeks, AHR, 12.1; 95% CI, 1.6 to 91; N=26) for bipolar disorder when compared with continued use. Brexanolone for depression onset in the third trimester or in the postpartum period may increase the risk of sedation or somnolence, leading to dose interruption or reduction when compared with placebo (5% vs. 0%). More than 95 percent of studies reporting on harms were observational in design and unable to fully account for confounding. These studies suggested some associations between benzodiazepine exposure before conception and ectopic pregnancy; between specific antidepressants during pregnancy and adverse maternal outcomes such as postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, and spontaneous abortion, and child outcomes such as respiratory issues, low Apgar scores, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, depression in children, and autism spectrum disorder; between quetiapine or olanzapine and gestational diabetes; and between benzodiazepine and neonatal intensive care admissions. Causality cannot be inferred from these studies. We found insufficient evidence on benefits and harms from comparative effectiveness studies, with one exception: one study suggested a higher risk of overall congenital anomalies (adjusted RR [ARR], 1.85; 95% CI, 1.23 to 2.78; N=2,608) and cardiac anomalies (ARR, 2.25; 95% CI, 1.17 to 4.34; N=2,608) for lithium compared with lamotrigine during first- trimester exposure. Conclusions. Few studies have been conducted in pregnant and postpartum women on the benefits of pharmacotherapy; many studies report on harms but are of low quality. The limited evidence available is consistent with some benefit, and some studies suggested increased adverse events. However, because these studies could not rule out underlying disease severity as the cause of the association, the causal link between the exposure and adverse events is unclear. Patients and clinicians need to make an informed, collaborative decision on treatment choices.

Abstract (sommario):
The five countries of Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, have each adopted climate targets to achieve the climate goals agreed in Paris by 2050. In this paper, the starting positions of all five countries are presented and the respective obstacles on the path to climate neutrality are identified. The starting positions in the countries with large oil, gas or coal reserves (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) differ from the countries where the basis of energy supply are large hydroelectric plants (Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan). One problem in all countries is the poorly developed power grid, which is partly outdated and not designed for high throughput rates. Existing power plants are mainly located in metropolitan regions and rural areas are partly undersupplied. If wind and solar power plants are built on a large scale in uninhabited areas, the lack of transmission lines is a major problem. Another problem is that energy prices are sometimes heavily subsidised, which can make it difficult for the population to accept necessary investments in the renewable energy sector. Especially in economically weak sections of the population, resistance to market-based energy prices is likely to be particularly strong. In the long term, information and increased education of large parts of the population can significantly improve the acceptance of the energy transition from carbon-based energy to solar, wind and small hydropower. The use of renewable energy is still in its infancy in all countries and must develop quickly if the ambitious climate goals are to be achieved. To this end, the training of local experts is particularly important. To this end, centres should be established at selected locations where local experts can be trained and further educated in various fields, from conception and planning to construction, maintenance and operation.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This report is written by students in the Ethnic and Migration Studies Master’s Programme, part of the Research Institute in Migration, Ethnicity, and Society (REMESO) at Linköping University, based on the Norrköping campus. REMESO is an internationally renowned institute that pursues research in migration and ethnic relations. The Master’s Programme is highly sought after, with students coming from all over the world to attend. Their interest in how migration transforms the world and how it influences other social phenomena has fuelled their work in this publication. In their first year of studies, students take the course Critical Cases in Ethnic and Migration Studies, led by Erik Berggren as course coordinator and Kenna Sim-Sarka. The course is designed for students to apply the theoretical knowledge and experiences gained throughout the first year’s courses to produce articles beyond an academic audience for the broader public. Each REMS report is based around a specific theme, with previous themes including migration and Covid-19, migration and Ukraine, and migration and democracy. The REMS report is one of the many ways in which we, as students, are trained to identify and analyse issues related to migration, integration, and diversity and to make research accessible to a wider audience. This year’s overarching theme is Migration and Culture, sparked by recent developments in Sweden’s and Norrköping’s politics of decreasing and cutting funds for cultural activities. Arts and culture are both areas of expression for migrant communities and people on the move, as well as those fighting against racism, discrimination, and exclusion. The current debate on “Swedish culture” and on a “Swedish cultural canon” recalls monolithic understandings of culture as a natural and immutable construct, contributing to the polarisation of views rather than the multiplication of perspectives and conceptions of it. Like culture, which can be visualised as a tapestry created from different threads, different contributions, woven together to form something complex, this report is also a collection of varied articles, united by a common theme. Some articles in this report look at the accessibility of culture in Sweden and its transmission through all kinds of mediums, such as TV programmes; others engage artists or “social artists” who care about issues like migration and the fight against racism and discrimination, and some focus on specific aspects of culture and arts, such as language, food, and music. The first-year students of EMS, 2024.
