Abstract (sommario):
<p>Quality of Service (QoS) is the collective effect of service performances, which determine the degree of satisfaction of a user of the service. In addition, QoS defined as the ability of a network to provide good service. QoS aims to provide different quality of services for various needs in the IP network. QoS parameters that can be used to analyze the data communication services are jitter, packet loss, throughput, and delay. The quality of QoS parameters in the network is affected by congestion. Congestion occurs because there is an excessive queue in the network. Congestion can be prevented by implementing flow control on network. Flow control is a method to control the data packet flow in a network. By controlling of the data packet flow, it can improve of QoS. This study intends to find out value of QoS on the internet network at Faculty Engineering, State University of Semarang by measuring network performance using QoS parameters. Then, in this research will be implemented the token bucket method as a flow control mechanism at the network to improve the QoS. After research and data analysis, internet network at Faculty Engineering State University of Semarang has QoS value was 3,5 with 87,5 % of percentage and classified in satisfying of category. When measuring the network performance, there are decreases of performance at access point that having data rates 150 Mbps with many users connected. It has 9,0 ms of delay value, 0.046 ms of jitter, 16,6% of packet loss and, 1293407 bps of throughput. After token bucket was applied as flow control mechanism that be simulated on Graphical Network Simulator 3, the internet network has QoS values 3,75 with 93,75 % of percentage and classified as “satisfying” category. Furthermore, the percentage of the throughput value obtained on network by implementing flow control is 62%, while on the existing network is 41%.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Recent advances in information communication technology and software have enabled mobile terminals to employ various capabilities as a smartphone. They adopt multiple interfaces for wireless communication and run as a portable computer. Mobile services are also transferred from voice to data. Mobile terminals can access Internet for data services anytime anywhere. By using location-based information, improved mobile services are enabled in heterogeneous networks. In the mobile service environment, it is required that mobile terminals should efficiently use wireless network resources. In addition, because video stream becomes a major service among the data services of mobile terminals in heterogeneous networks, the necessity of the efficient network access control for heterogeneous wireless networks is raised as an important topic. That is, quality of services of the location-based video stream is determined by the network access control. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel network access control in the heterogeneous wireless networks. The proposed method estimates the network status with Naïve Bayesian Classifier and performs network access control according to the estimated network status. Thus, it improves data transmission efficiency to satisfy the quality of services. The efficiency of the proposed method is validated through the extensive computer simulation.

Abstract (sommario):
The problem of ensuring the minimum delivery time of information with prevention of collisions is a pressing problem in ACS TP, since collisions often occur during transmission or the delay time of information is not optimal. This problem is solved by the use of wireless computer networks and methods of information transmission with collision prevention, which affect the delay time of information transmission. The developed model of the access control process in wireless computer networks solves the problem of effective information transfer with collision prevention. The purpose of using this model is to reduce the delay in information transmission. ACS TP often needs modernization as technical innovations are becoming available. At the same time, the quality of production should not fluctuate. The most important element of modernization is the use of wireless technologies that save money and time, compared to the deployment of wired networks. The aim of the work is to develop the model of control access process in a wireless computer network with collision prevention. The process of forming delay slots for information transfer has been researched. The object of the study is a wireless computer network in the ACS TP. The subject of the study is a model of control access process in a wireless computer network with collision prevention. The research objectives are to create requirements for the model, to propose a structure, to create a model, to conduct tests and evaluate the obtained results. The model of access control process in a wireless computer network designed to transmit information with prevention of collisions in a wireless computer network has been developed.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper investigates the capabilities for open access to quality of service management in convergent networks. Based on the analysis of requirements for policy and charging control in Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), functions for quality of service (QoS) management and charging that are available for third party applications are identified. The functionality of Open Service Access (OSA) and Parlay X interfaces is evaluated for support of dynamic QoS control, while an approach to development of OSA compliant application programming interfaces for QoS management in IMS networks is presented. The interface’s methods are mapped onto the messages of network control protocols such as Diameter and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Finally, aspects of interface implementation are discussed including behavior equivalence of state machines.

Abstract (sommario):
We consider mobile computer networks whose stationary movements are forced to change at some points in time by external control actions or random disturbances. External influence can be aimed at the transition of the network to another stationary movement, but during the transition period there is a danger of decreasing the reliability of the network, the quality of its functioning, and even the threat of operability. One of the reasons for this is the rapid change in the topological (graph) characteristics of the network — the loss of connectivity of the dynamic graph of the network, the change in the set of available data transmission routes between nodes. The paper describes the results of statistical modeling of the characteristics of dynamic graphs for perturbed motion, and also presents algorithms for managing dynamic graphs during the transition process, which reduce the negative effects on the network from external influences. Using methods of predictive modeling, the quality of control algorithms is evaluated.

Abstract (sommario):
We study an original scheme based on distributed feedforward neural networks, aimed at modelling several queueing systems in cascade fed with bursty traffic. For each queueing system, a neural network is trained to anticipate the average number of waiting packets, the packet loss rate and the coefficient of variation of the packet inter-departure time, given the mean rate, the peak rate and the coefficient of variation of the packet inter-arrival time. The latter serves for the calculation of the coefficient of variation of the cell inter-arrival time of the aggregated traffic which is fed as input to the next neural network along the path. The potential of this method is successfully illustrated on several single server FIFO (First In, First Out) queues and on small queueing networks made up from a combination of queues in tandem and in parallel fed by a superposition of ideal sources. Our long-term goal is the design of preventive control strategy in a multiservice communication network.

Abstract (sommario):
The advancements in network technologies and the evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) have made supporting industrial control systems over probabilistic data networks promising. However, control systems’ communication over the traditional data networks is faced with problems of instability in feedback control and poor quality of performance due to time-varying data propagation delay. This paper presents two approaches that can enable real-time industrial control over non-deterministic computer networks allowing control system designers to take advantage of the existing communication infrastructures. The first approach is based on system-level interaction over two wires network called the collaboration network. The second approach is based on the implementation of the virtual local area network (VLAN). This method allows real-time control of industrial equipment or systems over IP-based networks while other computers are connected. Nodes providing real-time control services have the same PortID on the VLAN switch. This approach minimizes data traffic and reduces time-varying delay in system control over IP networks. The first approach was modeled and simulated using Proteus ISIS software. Two PIC16F877A microcontrollers were used to represent two nodes. CISCO packet tracer was used in the second approach to model and simulate IP-based control system communications over the traditional data network. Results indicate that the use of a two-wire collaborative network approach to a real-time control system is effective but requires an additional network alongside the main data traffic channel. VLAN, therefore, presents a more flexible approach that relies on the same infrastructures.

Saraireh, Mohammad Suleiman Abdul-Qader. "Medium access control mechanisms for quality of service in wireless computer networks". Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2006. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20325/.

Abstract (sommario):
The fast growth and development of wireless computer networks and multimedia applications means it is essential that these applications can be transmitted over the standard IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol with high Quality of Service (QoS). The lack of QoS in the standard IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) results in applications with considerably different QoS requirements receiving similar network services. This means, the performance of time-sensitive applications with stringent delay, jitter, and packet loss requirements will not be met. Even time-insensitive applications will be treated unfairly because access to the medium is on a random basis. Therefore, the main aims of this thesis are: (i) to investigate the limitations and performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF, (ii) to develop a comprehensive solution that provides effective and efficient QoS provisioning in IEEE 802.11 DCF scheme in a fair, scalable, and robust manner. The latter is achieved by developing novel MAC mechanisms for providing QoS in the IEEE 802.11 DCF for multimedia transmission. The scarcity of channel capacity, unfairness and hidden terminal problems, multiple hops, and other conditions and parameters that affect QoS in a wireless network are issues which require in depth investigations and analysis. In this thesis, extensive investigations using the network simulator 2 (NS-2) package were carried out to examine the impact of these issues on the main QoS parameters (throughput, delay, jitter, packet loss and collision). The findings revealed that the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol performed inadequately when transmitting various applications due to the limitations inherent in its operation. The performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol was also investigated by studying the impact of varying the values of minimum Contention Window (CW[min]) and the Distributed Inter Frame Space (DIFS). The study shows that inappropriate values of CW[min] and DIFS resulted in significant network performance degradations and demonstrated that it was important to select an appropriate set of MAC protocol transmission parameters in order to provide improved QoS.Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques using fuzzy logic and Genetic Algorithms (GAs) for assessing and optimising MAC protocol transmission parameters were developed and their effectiveness evaluated. The study confirmed that the application of AI techniques significantly improved the QoS for audio and video applications by more than 50% and fairly shared the channel access among the contending stations as compared to the standard IEEE 802.11 DCF scheme. Ratio based and Collision Rate Variation (CRV) schemes were developed to dynamically adjust the CW and DIFS values according to the current and past network conditions. Using these schemes significant improvements with service differentiation were achieved in an Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS). A queue status monitoring technique was devised for the intermediate stations. This provided QoS differentiation at the MAC layer for multi-hop networks. Autoregressive (AR) models that accurately predicted the network parameters were also developed. These enabled the MAC protocol transmission parameters to be adjusted in an improved manner. Using these models, average QoS was improved by more than 60%; average delay, packet loss and collision were reduced by more than 50% compared to IEEE 802.11 DCF scheme. This led to the development of novel MAC mechanisms to provide QoS in IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. The mechanisms support multiple QoS metrics and consider traffic history and predict future network conditions. The schemes also are characterised by the simplicity, robustness, and ease of implementation. The contribution of this thesis is the development of a comprehensive solution to provide effective and efficient QoS differentiation in IEEE 802.11 DCF scheme for multimedia transmission in a distributed, fair, scalable, and robust manner. Furthermore, through the use of these approaches, the findings of this study provide a framework that also contributes to the knowledge concerning the QoS over the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol.

Abstract (sommario):
The transmission of realtime audio data across digital networks is subject to strict quality of service requirements. These networks need to be able to guarantee network resources (e.g., bandwidth), ensure timely and deterministic data delivery, and provide time synchronisation mechanisms to ensure successful transmission of this data. Two open standards-based networking technologies, namely IEEE 1394 and the recently standardised Ethernet AVB, provide distinct methods for achieving these goals. Audio devices that are compatible with IEEE 1394 networks exist, and audio devices that are compatible with Ethernet AVB networks are starting to come onto the market. There is a need for mechanisms to provide compatibility between the audio devices that reside on these disparate networks such that existing IEEE 1394 audio devices are able to communicate with Ethernet AVB audio devices, and vice versa. The audio devices that reside on these networks may be remotely controlled by a diverse set of incompatible command and control protocols. It is desirable to have a common network-neutral method of control over the various parameters of the devices that reside on these networks. As part of this study, two Ethernet AVB systems were developed. One system acts as an Ethernet AVB audio endpoint device and another system acts as an audio gateway between IEEE 1394 and Ethernet AVB networks. These systems, along with existing IEEE 1394 audio devices, were used to demonstrate the ability to transfer audio data between the networking technologies. Each of the devices is remotely controllable via a network neutral command and control protocol, XFN. The IEEE 1394 and Ethernet AVB devices are used to demonstrate the use of the XFN protocol to allow for network neutral connection management to take place between IEEE 1394 and Ethernet AVB networks. User control over these diverse devices is achieved via the use of a graphical patchbay application, which aims to provide a consistent user interface to a diverse range of devices.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 195-202).
Rapid growth of the Internet and multimedia applications, combined with an increasingly ubiquitous deployment of wireless systems, has created a huge demand for providing enhanced data services over wireless networks. Invariably, meeting the quality-of-service requirements for such services translates into stricter packet-delay and throughput constraints on communication. In addition, wireless systems have stringent limitations on resources which necessitates that these must be utilized in the most efficient manner. In this thesis, we develop dynamic rate-control and scheduling algorithms to meet quality-of-service requirements on data while making efficient utilization of resources. Ideas from Network Calculus theory, Continuous-time Stochastic Optimal Control and Convex Optimization are utilized to obtain a theoretical understanding of the problems considered, and to develop various insights from the analysis. We, first, address energy-efficient transmission of deadline-constrained data over wire-less fading channels. In this setup, a transmitter with controllable transmission rate is considered, and the objective is to obtain a rate-control policy for transmitting deadline- constrained data with minimum total energy expenditure. Towards this end, a deterministic model is first considered and the optimal policy is obtained graphically using a novel cumulative curves methodology. We, then, consider stochastic channel fading and introduce the canonical problem of transmitting B units of data by deadline T over a Markov fading channel. This problem is referred to as the "BT-problem" and its optimal solution is obtained using techniques from stochastic control theory.
(cont.) Among various extensions, specific setups involving variable deadlines on the data packets, known arrivals and a Poisson arrival process are considered. Using a graphical approach, transmission policies for these cases are obtained through a natural extension of the results obtained earlier. In the latter part of the thesis, a multi-user downlink model is considered which consists of a single transmitter serving multiple mobile users. Here, the quality-of-service requirement is to provide guaranteed average throughput to a certain class of users, and the objective is to obtain a multi-user scheduling policy that achieves this using the minimum number of time-slots. Based on a geometric approach we obtain the optimal policy for a general fading scenario, and, further specialize it to the case of symmetric Rayleigh fading to obtain closed-form relationships among the various performance metrics.

Abstract (sommario):
The convergence of recent technology advances opens the way to new ubiquitous environments, where network-enabled devices collectively form invisible pervasive computing and networking environments around the users. These users increasingly require extensive applications and capabilities from these devices. Recent approaches propose that cooperating service providers, at the edge of the network, offer these required capabilities (i.e services), instead of having them directly provided by the devices. Thus, the network evolves from a plain communication medium into an endless source of services. Such a service, namely an overlay application, is composed of multiple distributed application elements, which cooperate via a dynamic communication mesh, namely an overlay association. The Quality of Service (QoS) perceived by the users of an overlay application greatly depends on the QoS on the communication paths of the corresponding overlay association. This thesis asserts and shows that it is possible to provide QoS to an overlay application by using alternate Internet paths resulting from the compositions of independent consecutive paths. Moreover, this thesis also demonstrates that it is possible to discover, select and compose these independent paths in a distributed manner within an community comprising a limited large number of autonomous cooperating peers, such as the fore-mentioned service providers. Thus, the main contributions of this thesis are i) a comprehensive description and QoS characteristic analysis of these composite alternate paths, and ii) an original architecture, termed SPAD (Super-Peer based Alternate path Discovery), which allows the discovery and selection of these alternate paths in a distributed manner. SPAD is a fully distributed system with no single point of failure, which can be easily and incrementally deployed on the current Internet. It empowers the end-users at the edge of the network, allowing them to directly discover and utilize alternate paths.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis we deal with the application of Network Coding to guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) for wireless multi-hop networks. Since the medium is shared, wireless networks suffer from the negative interference impact on the bandwidth. It is thus interesting to propose a Network Coding based approach that takes into account this interference during the routing process. In this context, we first propose an algorithm minimizing the interference impact for unicast flows while respecting their required bandwidth. Then, we combine it with Network Coding to increase the number of admitted flows and with Topology Control to still improve the interference management. We show by simulation the benefit of combining the three fields: Network Coding, interference consideration and Topology Control. We also deal with delay management for multicast flows and use the Generation-Based Network Coding (GBNC) that combines the packets per blocks. Most of the works on GBNC consider a fixed generation size. Because of the network state variations, the delay of decoding and recovering a block of packets can vary accordingly degrading the QoS. To solve this problem, we propose a network-and content-aware method that adjusts the generation size dynamically to respect a certain decoding delay. We also enhance it to overcome the issue of acknowledgement loss. We then propose to apply our approach in a Home Area Network for Live TV and video streaming. Our solution provides QoS and Quality of Experience for the end user with no additional equipment. Finally, we focus on a more theoretical work in which we present a new Butterfly-based network for multi-source multi-destination flows. We characterize the source node buffer size using the queuing theory and show that it matches the simulation results.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe emergence of 5G technologies opens up new opportunities for railway communications. One of the foundational aspects of 5G architecture is its control-plane programmability, which can be achieved through Software Defined Networking (SDN). In railway scenarios, this can be used to dynamically reconfigure the network for a more effective and efficient management of communication flows produced by moving trains. The paper presents a framework for integrating modelling and analysis tools into a programmable control plane specifically tailored to railway communications. We introduce the concept of domain-awareness in the network control plane as an SDN-enabled feature that allows achieving application-specific advantages besides those purely expressed in terms of key performance indicators such as the quality of service. We propose a reference architecture in which domain-awareness in the control plane is obtained by considering information gathered by network devices and ad-hoc communication gateways that are able to detect relevant signalling events. In the architecture, the actual behaviour of the SDN controller is governed by applications that are able to react to specific triggers and re-configure network devices accordingly. We also provide a methodological framework based on model-driven engineering and formal methods, including dynamic state machines, for the automatic generation of SDN control plane logic.

Abstract (sommario):
The objectives of this project were to develop nondestructive methods for detection of internal properties and firmness of fruits and vegetables. One method was based on a soft piezoelectric film transducer developed in the Technion, for analysis of fruit response to low-energy excitation. The second method was a dot-matrix piezoelectric transducer of North Carolina State University, developed for contact-pressure analysis of fruit during impact. Two research teams, one in Israel and the other in North Carolina, coordinated their research effort according to the specific objectives of the project, to develop and apply the two complementary methods for quality control of agricultural commodities. In Israel: An improved firmness testing system was developed and tested with tropical fruits. The new system included an instrumented fruit-bed of three flexible piezoelectric sensors and miniature electromagnetic hammers, which served as fruit support and low-energy excitation device, respectively. Resonant frequencies were detected for determination of firmness index. Two new acoustic parameters were developed for evaluation of fruit firmness and maturity: a dumping-ratio and a centeroid of the frequency response. Experiments were performed with avocado and mango fruits. The internal damping ratio, which may indicate fruit ripeness, increased monotonically with time, while resonant frequencies and firmness indices decreased with time. Fruit samples were tested daily by destructive penetration test. A fairy high correlation was found in tropical fruits between the penetration force and the new acoustic parameters; a lower correlation was found between this parameter and the conventional firmness index. Improved table-top firmness testing units, Firmalon, with data-logging system and on-line data analysis capacity have been built. The new device was used for the full-scale experiments in the next two years, ahead of the original program and BARD timetable. Close cooperation was initiated with local industry for development of both off-line and on-line sorting and quality control of more agricultural commodities. Firmalon units were produced and operated in major packaging houses in Israel, Belgium and Washington State, on mango and avocado, apples, pears, tomatoes, melons and some other fruits, to gain field experience with the new method. The accumulated experimental data from all these activities is still analyzed, to improve firmness sorting criteria and shelf-life predicting curves for the different fruits. The test program in commercial CA storage facilities in Washington State included seven apple varieties: Fuji, Braeburn, Gala, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and D'Anjou pear variety. FI master-curves could be developed for the Braeburn, Gala, Granny Smith and Jonagold apples. These fruits showed a steady ripening process during the test period. Yet, more work should be conducted to reduce scattering of the data and to determine the confidence limits of the method. Nearly constant FI in Red Delicious and the fluctuations of FI in the Fuji apples should be re-examined. Three sets of experiment were performed with Flandria tomatoes. Despite the complex structure of the tomatoes, the acoustic method could be used for firmness evaluation and to follow the ripening evolution with time. Close agreement was achieved between the auction expert evaluation and that of the nondestructive acoustic test, where firmness index of 4.0 and more indicated grade-A tomatoes. More work is performed to refine the sorting algorithm and to develop a general ripening scale for automatic grading of tomatoes for the fresh fruit market. Galia melons were tested in Israel, in simulated export conditions. It was concluded that the Firmalon is capable of detecting the ripening of melons nondestructively, and sorted out the defective fruits from the export shipment. The cooperation with local industry resulted in development of automatic on-line prototype of the acoustic sensor, that may be incorporated with the export quality control system for melons. More interesting is the development of the remote firmness sensing method for sealed CA cool-rooms, where most of the full-year fruit yield in stored for off-season consumption. Hundreds of ripening monitor systems have been installed in major fruit storage facilities, and being evaluated now by the consumers. If successful, the new method may cause a major change in long-term fruit storage technology. More uses of the acoustic test method have been considered, for monitoring fruit maturity and harvest time, testing fruit samples or each individual fruit when entering the storage facilities, packaging house and auction, and in the supermarket. This approach may result in a full line of equipment for nondestructive quality control of fruits and vegetables, from the orchard or the greenhouse, through the entire sorting, grading and storage process, up to the consumer table. The developed technology offers a tool to determine the maturity of the fruits nondestructively by monitoring their acoustic response to mechanical impulse on the tree. A special device was built and preliminary tested in mango fruit. More development is needed to develop a portable, hand operated sensing method for this purpose. In North Carolina: Analysis method based on an Auto-Regressive (AR) model was developed for detecting the first resonance of fruit from their response to mechanical impulse. The algorithm included a routine that detects the first resonant frequency from as many sensors as possible. Experiments on Red Delicious apples were performed and their firmness was determined. The AR method allowed the detection of the first resonance. The method could be fast enough to be utilized in a real time sorting machine. Yet, further study is needed to look for improvement of the search algorithm of the methods. An impact contact-pressure measurement system and Neural Network (NN) identification method were developed to investigate the relationships between surface pressure distributions on selected fruits and their respective internal textural qualities. A piezoelectric dot-matrix pressure transducer was developed for the purpose of acquiring time-sampled pressure profiles during impact. The acquired data was transferred into a personal computer and accurate visualization of animated data were presented. Preliminary test with 10 apples has been performed. Measurement were made by the contact-pressure transducer in two different positions. Complementary measurements were made on the same apples by using the Firmalon and Magness Taylor (MT) testers. Three-layer neural network was designed. 2/3 of the contact-pressure data were used as training input data and corresponding MT data as training target data. The remaining data were used as NN checking data. Six samples randomly chosen from the ten measured samples and their corresponding Firmalon values were used as the NN training and target data, respectively. The remaining four samples' data were input to the NN. The NN results consistent with the Firmness Tester values. So, if more training data would be obtained, the output should be more accurate. In addition, the Firmness Tester values do not consistent with MT firmness tester values. The NN method developed in this study appears to be a useful tool to emulate the MT Firmness test results without destroying the apple samples. To get more accurate estimation of MT firmness a much larger training data set is required. When the larger sensitive area of the pressure sensor being developed in this project becomes available, the entire contact 'shape' will provide additional information and the neural network results would be more accurate. It has been shown that the impact information can be utilized in the determination of internal quality factors of fruit. Until now,

Abstract (sommario):
Riprap rock and aggregates are extensively used in structural, transportation, geotechnical, and hydraulic engineering applications. Field determination of morphological properties of aggregates such as size and shape can greatly facilitate the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process for proper aggregate material selection and engineering use. Many aggregate imaging approaches have been developed to characterize the size and morphology of individual aggregates by computer vision. However, 3D field characterization of aggregate particle morphology is challenging both during the quarry production process and at construction sites, particularly for aggregates in stockpile form. This research study presents a 3D reconstruction-segmentation-completion approach based on deep learning techniques by combining three developed research components: field 3D reconstruction procedures, 3D stockpile instance segmentation, and 3D shape completion. The approach was designed to reconstruct aggregate stockpiles from multi-view images, segment the stockpile into individual instances, and predict the unseen side of each instance (particle) based on the partial visible shapes. Based on the dataset constructed from individual aggregate models, a state-of-the-art 3D instance segmentation network and a 3D shape completion network were implemented and trained, respectively. The application of the integrated approach was demonstrated on re-engineered stockpiles and field stockpiles. The validation of results using ground-truth measurements showed satisfactory algorithm performance in capturing and predicting the unseen sides of aggregates. The algorithms are integrated into a software application with a user-friendly graphical user interface. Based on the findings of this study, this stockpile aggregate analysis approach is envisioned to provide efficient field evaluation of aggregate stockpiles by offering convenient and reliable solutions for on-site QA/QC tasks of riprap rock and aggregate stockpiles.

Abstract (sommario):
Increased world competition, as well as increased concern for the environment, drive all manufacturing systems, including greenhouses, towards high-precision operation. Optimal control is an important tool to achieve this goal, since it finds the best compromise between conflicting demands, such as higher profits and environmental concerns. The report, which is a collection of papers, each with its own abstract, outlines an approach for optimal, model-based control of the greenhouse environment. A reliable crop model is essential for this approach and a significant portion of the effort went in this direction, resulting in a radically new version of the tomato model TOMGRO, which can be used as a prototype model for other greenhouse crops. Truly optimal control of a very complex system requires prohibitively large computer resources. Two routes to model simplification have, therefore, been tried: Model reduction (to fewer state variables) and simplified decision making. Crop model reduction from nearly 70 state variables to about 5, was accomplished by either selecting a subset of the original variables or by forming combinations of them. Model dynamics were then fitted either with mechanistic relationships or with neural networks. To simplify the decision making process, the number of costate variables (control policy parametrs) was recuced to one or two. The dry-matter state variable was transformed in such a way that its costate became essentially constant throughout the season. A quasi-steady-state control algorithm was implemented in an experimental greenhouse. A constant value for the dry-matter costate was able to control simultaneously ventilation and CO2 enrichment by continuously producing weather-dependent optimal setpoints and then maintaining them closely.

Abstract (sommario):
This project summarizes the results from 2000–2020and evaluates the trueness andthequality control (QC) procedures of the ongoing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)and trace element measurements in Finlandrelating to Air Quality (AQ) Directive 2004/107/EC. The evaluation was focused on benzo(a)pyrene and other PAH compounds as well as arsenic, cadmium and nickel in PM10and deposition. Additionally, it included lead and other metals in PM10and deposition, gaseous mercury and mercury deposition, andbriefly other specificAQ measurements such as volatile organic compounds (VOC)and PM2.5chemical composition. This project was conducted by the National Reference Laboratory on air quality and thiswas the first time these measurements were assessed. A major part of the project was field and laboratory audits of the ongoing PAH and metal measurements. Other measurements were briefly evaluated through interviews and available literature. In addition, the national AQ database, the expertise of local measurement networks and related publications were utilised. In total, all theseven measurement networks performing PAH and metal measurements in 2019–2020took part in the audits. Eleven stations were audited while these measurements are performed at 22 AQ stations in Finland. For the large networks, one station was chosen to represent the performance of the network. The audits included also six laboratories performing the analysis of the collected samples. The audits revealed the compliance of the measurements with the AQ Decree 113/2017, Directive 2004/107/EC and Standards of the European Committee for Standardization(CEN). In addition, general information of the measurements, instruments and quality control procedures were gained. The results of the laboratory audits were confidential, but this report includes general findings, and the measurement networks were informed on the audit results with the permission of the participating laboratories. As a conclusion, the measurementmethodsusedwere mainly reference methods. Currently, all sampling methods were reference methods; however, before 2018 three networks used other methods that may have underestimated concentrations. Regarding these measurements, it should be noted the results are notcomparable with the reference method. Laboratory methods were reference methods excluding two cases, where the first was considered an acceptable equivalent method. For the other, a change to a reference method was strongly recommended and this realized in 2020. For some new measurements, the ongoing QC procedures were not yet fully established, and advice were given. Some networks used consultant for calibration and maintenance, and thus theywere not fully aware of the QC procedures. EN Standards were mostly followed. Main concerns were related to the checks of flow and calculation of measurement uncertainty, and suggestions for improvement were given. When the measurement networks implement the recommendations given inthe audits, it can be concluded that the EN Standards are adequately followed in the networks. In the ongoing sampling, clear factors risking the trueness of the result were not found. This applies also for the laboratory analyses in 2020. One network had concentrations above the target value, and theindicative measurementsshould be updated to fixed measurements.
