The use of Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools has been viewed as a remedy for the software development crisis by achieving improved productivity and system quality via the automation of all or part of the software engineering process. The proliferation and tremendous variety of tools available have stretched the understanding of experienced practitioners and has had a profound impact on the software engineering process itself. To understand what a tool does and compare it to similar tools is a formidable task given the existing diversity of functionality. This thesis investigates what tools are available, proposes a general classification scheme to assist those investigating tools to decide where a tool falls within the software engineering process and identifies a tool's capabilities and limitations. This thesis also provides guidance for the evaluation of a tool and evaluates three commercially available tools.

Abstract (sommario):
The objectives of computer aided software engineering (CASE) systems are to improve productivity during the software development process and the quality of software using software engineering concepts via automation of the software development life cycle. This will result in a reusable software and will decrease the cost and time of software development and maintenance. The main concern in this thesis is with describing the features of a particular software understanding environment for C. An algorithm directed computer aided software engineering environment for C language has been developed and implemented. The system has been implemented on a Sun Workstation using the Sunview window interface. It provides computer aided software engineering tools which: (1) Assist the user in developing structured algorithms for procedural languages; (2) Automatically transform a structured algorithm into a corresponding program; (3) Redocument the resulting C program (or any C program developed using any other technique) in an organized representation.

Shahdad, Mir Abubakr. "Engineering innovation (TRIZ based computer aided innovation)". Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3317.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes the approach and results of the research to create a TRIZ based computer aided innovation tools (AEGIS and Design for Wow). This research has mainly been based around two tools created under this research: called AEGIS (Accelerated Evolutionary Graphics Interface System), and Design for Wow. Both of these tools are discussed in this thesis in detail, along with the test data, design methodology, test cases, and research. Design for Wow (http://www.designforwow.com) is an attempt to summarize the successful inventions/ designs from all over the world on a web portal which has multiple capabilities. These designs/innovations are then linked to the TRIZ Principles in order to determine whether innovative aspects of these successful innovations are fully covered by the forty TRIZ principles. In Design for Wow, a framework is created which is implemented through a review tool. The Design for Wow website includes this tool which has been used by researcher and the users of the site and reviewers to analyse the uploaded data in terms of strength of TRIZ Principles linked to them. AEGIS (Accelerated Evolutionary Graphics Interface System) is a software tool developed under this research aimed to help the graphic designers to make innovative graphic designs. Again it uses the forty TRIZ Principles as a set of guiding rules in the software. AEGIS creates graphic design prototypes according to the user input and uses TRIZ Principles framework as a guide to generate innovative graphic design samples. The AEGIS tool created is based on TRIZ Principles discussed in Chapter 3 (a subset of them). In AEGIS, the TRIZ Principles are used to create innovative graphic design effects. The literature review on innovative graphic design (in chapter 3) has been analysed for links with TRIZ Principles and then the DNA of AEGIS has been built on the basis of this study. Results from various surveys/ questionnaires indicated were used to collect the innovative graphic design samples and then TRIZ was mapped to it (see section 3.2). The TRIZ effects were mapped to the basic graphic design elements and the anatomy of the graphic design letters was studied to analyse the TRIZ effects in the collected samples. This study was used to build the TRIZ based AEGIS tool. Hence, AEGIS tool applies the innovative effects using TRIZ to basic graphic design elements (as described in section 3.3). the working of AEGIS is designed based on Genetic Algorithms coded specifically to implement TRIZ Principles specialized for Graphic Design, chapter 4 discusses the process followed to apply TRIZ Principles to graphic design and coding them using Genetic Algorithms, hence resulting in AEGIS tool. Similarly, in Design for Wow, the content uploaded has been analysed for its link with TRIZ Principles (see section 3.1 for TRIZ Principles). The tool created in Design for Wow is based on the framework of analysing the TRIZ links in the uploaded content. The ‘Wow’ concept discussed in the section 5.1 and 5.2 is the basis of the concept of Design for Wow website, whereby the users upload the content they classify as ‘Wow’. This content then is further analysed for the ‘Wow factor’ and then mapped to TRIZ Principles as TRIZ tagging methodology is framed (section 5.5). From the results of the research, it appears that the TRIZ Principles are a comprehensive set of innovation basic building blocks. Some surveys suggest that amongst other tools, TRIZ Principles were the first choice and used most .They have thus the potential of being used in other innovation domains, to help in their analysis, understanding and potential development.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2006.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 102-103).
Perhaps the greatest innovation in engineering in the last fifty years, computer software has changed the way structural engineers conduct nearly every aspect of their daily business. Computer-aided drafting, analysis, and design software are invaluable tools for any structural engineering firm. Given the growth, extensive competition, and demands of the industry, a firm cannot survive if it does not take advantage of the powers and capabilities that modem computer software offer. Computers have drastically altered the way engineers communicate with co-workers, clients, architects, and construction managers, improving the efficiency of the design delivery system and facilitating the conveying of design changes, issues, and concerns between all entities involved in a project. This software has optimized the structural drafting, analysis, and design processes in ways engineers never could have imagined possible half a century ago. These innovations not only add up to major savings in construction costs and increased profits for all parties involved in a project, but also to more accurate designs, quicker design completions, improved organization and sharing of data, and higher productivity within the engineering office.
(cont.) This thesis examines the applications of computer software in the structural engineering industry, its effects both positive and negative, the professional and legal responsibility of engineers to use software wisely, methods of checking the results of computer analysis and design programs, recent innovations and the future of structural engineering computer software, and the importance of educating future structural engineers on the use of computer software. An examination of the drafting, structural analysis, and design of two complex structures using three-dimensional modeling programs is included to illustrate the value and correct use of structural engineering computer software. It is the intention of this thesis to highlight the benefits and dangers associated with the use of computer software in the structural engineering industry and to inspire innovations in the technology and capabilities of such software.

Grieshaber, Michele Marie. "A computer-aided software engineering toolkit for the integration of CAD/CAM application software in a network environment". Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37875.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Much progress has been made in recent years in the development of Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) tools for engineering design, analysis, and manufacturing. Unfortunately, most of these CAD/CAM applications were constructed independently and without standardization. In essence, they automate a single aspect of design, analysis, or manufacturing and cannot be combined to form a cohesive environment, since integration among applications was not addressed during the design phase of CAD/CAM application software creation. In view of this problem, a novel approach is suggested for software integration of applications in a network environment. The distributed integration solution described in this dissertation employs a new "integration client/server" relationship, where the integration server is the core of the system, providing functions to translate or transform data between applications. The integration client consists of an interface with the server, a CAD/CAM application, and a user interface with the integrated system called the GRIM (GRaphical Interface Manager). There is only one integration server in the system, but there may be an unlimited number of clients. The solution created for distributed integration is implemented in a Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) workbench, geared specifically toward the generation of integration systems. This workbench is known as the CAD/CAM CASE Workbench, and includes an integration solution as well as standard CASE tools. The integration solution contains several tools which will aid a system designer in generating integration systems for CAD/CAM applications. Included is the distributed integration solution described in this dissertation. The distributed integration solution is designed to facilitate the semi-automatic generation of an integration system. It consists of an integration server at the center of the integration system which manages the exchange of data among the integration clients. The integration clients are the CAD/CAM applications in the context of the integration system. To use the distributed integration solution, the integration system designer will customize portions of the structure charts, data dictionary, and module specifications contained in the workbench according to the needs of the applications programs and generate C-source code defining the integration system. Using the distributed integration solution, the user will be able to effect data requests for applications, using the GRIM to interact with the system. All data exchanges are request driven. In addition to the distributed integration solution, this research includes a prototype integrated system which allows data to be requested from one application, and translated to a second for display and manipulation. The prototype was tested in a distributed environment and the results are described.

Abstract (sommario):
"This thesis presents an in depth study of Pro/Engineer's manufacturing module and its application into the Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) undergraduate education environment. Mechanical Engineering has a lot to gain by incorporating computers into the undergraduate curriculum in comparison to only the traditional classroom surroundings. Today, complex problems can be solved in mere seconds thanks to the power and speed of current computers. Likewise within today's manufacturing sector, numerical controlled (NC) machines are no longer programmed manually. In today's globally competitive manufacturing environment, integrated systems such as CAD/CAM help reduce the ever-shrinking time to market. This thesis contains the background as well as the curriculum material necessary to teach undergraduate students CAM using Pro/Engineer's manufacturing module. The curriculum material starts with the tutorials to teach and reinforce Pro/Engineer basic sketcher skills, which are necessary background information. Followed with in-depth click tutorials to teach the manufacturing module for 2 axes turning, and 3 axes hole drilling and milling. It also includes the necessary lab manuals that reinforce the class lecture material, an electronic manufacturing exam, and the students' evaluations from 2 terms when the CAM course (ME3820) was offered."

Abstract (sommario):
Rapid prototyping (RP) is a set of fabrication technologies that are used to produce accurate parts directly from computer aided drawing (CAD) data. These technologies are unique in a way that they use an additive fabrication approach in which a three dimensional (3D) object is directly produced. In this thesis study, a RP application with a modular architecture is designed and implemented to satisfy the possible requirements of future rapid prototyping studies. After a functional classification, the developed RP software is divided into View, RP and Slice Modules. In the RP module, the process parameter selection and optimal build orientation determination steps are carried out. In the Slice Module, slicing and tool path generation steps are performed. View Module is used to visualize the inputs and outputs of the RP software. To provide 3D visualization support for View Module, a fully independent, open for development, high level 3D modeling environment and graphics library called Graphics Framework is developed. The resulting RP application is benchmarked with the RP software packages in the market according to their memory usage and process time. As a result of this benchmark, it is observed that the developed RP software has presented an equivalent performance with the other commercial RP applications and has proved its success.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A wide variety of design methodologies exist in literature and the methodologies employed may differ among companies and even among design teams. Therefore a software tool, called DiDeas II, is being developed for the early phases of mechanical engineering design. DiDeas II is customisable to accommodate various design methodologies. An approach for customisability which allows the user interface and data structure to be customised without changing the source code has been implemented in previous developments via an approach combining ontology and conceptual graphs. This approach is expanded in this thesis to allow for the implementation of various design methodologies through the use of tables for the display of information with inheritance of data among these tables. During groupwork, communication is both asynchronous and synchronous. DiDeas II has been developed in this thesis to facilitate and capture both asynchronous and synchronous communication between team members. Capturing such communications has the potential to provide insight into design decisions. The communication functionality was assessed in case studies in an academic environment. DiDeas II proved to be effective at recording “soft” information during design and placing the information into context for future reference. The degree to which DiDeas II could be customised to suit the design process at different companies was assessed through discussions with engineers in industry. These discussions showed that it was possible to customise DiDeas II according to the design processes followed by the participants.

Abstract (sommario):
A previously developed feature library and algorithm are improved in order to develop a software capable of designing of parts to be manufactured using a four-axis CNC lathe. The developed program is composed of sections which are
part geometry design, process planning, cutting tool and machining parameter selection, part program generation and G-code simulation for verification. The developed program is capable of designing parts which contain axisymetric features for turning and related operations, and non-axisymetric features for milling on facial, lateral and cylindrical surfaces. Implemented design procedure defines a blank material shape that can be circular or polygonal cross-sectioned bar or a pre-manufactured part. A detailed database is created for proper cutting tool selection and machining data determination. User can either define or let the program to automatically select the cutting parameters like cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut for each cutting tool with respect to the workpiece material being machined. After completing design and process planning procedures
information for generation of the CNC program becomes readily available for editing or transferring to the CNC machine tool. User can also simulate the NC program to verify the tool path. User friendly interface, which runs on Autodesk'
s INVENTOR software to visualize the design process, allows design and modifications to be done very easily moreover previously designed parts can be redesigned to produce new modified parts.

Information systems have become an essential part of every business organization's production and management process. It is critical to an enterprise to integrate its organization and information systems. However, the lack of computer-supported tools for modeling organization and information systems has put their integration far beyond our reach. In this research, a metasystem approach that can integrate organization and information system modeling by means of group decision support systems (GDSS) and computer-aided software engineering (CASE) has been proposed. A prototype system, called MetaPlex, has been designed and implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. The emphasis in design and implementation of MetaPlex has been on making the underlying knowledge representation expressive enough to meet modeling requirements and ensuring that the user interface is easy for managers and users to use. The use of a GDSS makes it possible to capture strategic assumptions and business objectives, as well as structures of an organization, from managers through face-to-face group meetings. The application of the metasystem concepts in generating GDSS tools makes the customization of a GDSS environment possible. Because of GDSS environment driven by a metasystem can be used to acquire information about a target system from multiple experts in a structured format that can be integrated with CASE tools, this approach provides a basis for a seamless integration of GDSS and CASE tools to support both organization and information system modeling.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation presents a theoretical model of information systems (IS) project management that aims to improve the rate of project success, estimated at time of writing to be less than 50% despite over thirty years of experience. The inquiry into IS managementand the development of the CED Model of IS Project Management presented in this dissertation were informed by critical social theory and pragmatics. IS projects are conceptualised as a collaborative undertaking by everyone affected by the project : the constituents. The model identifies the central role of constituents' expectations and their critical examination of the intended, desired and feared outcomes. By being based in the political, economic, technical and social dimensions of IS projects, this dissertation makes a theoretical contribution to the IS discipline. Furthermore, by establishing a set of prescriptions for how a project should be conducted by identifying who should take part (the constituents), how they should interact(engaging in the project discourse) and how the processes should be managed(driven by the constituents' expectations), the model provides guidance for IS practitioners to increase the likelihood of successfully implementing the project. From a research perspective, this dissertation presents an example of empirically grounded IS research, informed by critical-pragmatic theoretic concerns, that is highly relevant for IS practice.

Abstract (sommario):
[EN] Software development projects are diverse in nature. For this reason, software companies are often forced to define their methods in-house. In order to define methods efficiently and effectively, software companies require systematic solutions that are built upon sound methodical foundations. Providing these solutions is the main goal of the Method Engineering discipline. Method Engineering is the discipline to design, construct, and adapt methods, techniques, and tools for the development of information systems. Over the last two decades, a lot of research work has been performed in this area. However, despite its potential benefits, Method Engineering is not widely used in industrial settings. Some of the causes of this reality are the high theoretical complexity of Method Engineering and the lack of adequate software support. In this thesis, we aim to mitigate some of the problems that affect Method Engineering by providing a novel methodological approach that is built upon Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) foundations. The use of MDE enables a rise in abstraction, automation, and reuse that allows us to alleviate the complexity of our Method Engineering approach. Furthermore, by leveraging MDE techniques (such as metamodeling, model transformations, and models at runtime), our approach supports three phases of the Method Engineering lifecycle: design, implementation, and execution. This is unlike traditional Method Engineering approaches, which, in general, only support one of these phases. In order to provide software support for our proposal, we developed a Computer-Aided Method Engineering (CAME) environment that is called MOSKitt4ME. To ensure that MOSKitt4ME offered the necessary functionality, we identified a set of functional requirements prior to developing the tool. Then, after these requirements were identified, we defined the architecture of our CAME environment, and, finally, we implemented the architecture in the context of Eclipse. The thesis work was evaluated by means of a study that involved the participation of end users. In this study, MOSKitt4ME was assessed by means of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Think Aloud method. While the TAM allowed us to measure usefulness and ease of use in a subjective manner, the Think Aloud method allowed us to analyze these measures objectively. Overall, the results were favorable. MOSKitt4ME was highly rated in perceived usefulness and ease of use; we also obtained positive results with respect to the users' actual performance and the difficulty experienced.

Abstract: Digital libraries are advanced and complex information systems that store, aggregate, and manage correlated information. These systems are used by specific communities to access digital objects of interest. Due to the creation of huge collections of heterogeneous data (in terms of type and format), some of these data are organized in digital complex objects, in the sense that they are composed by other digital objects. Since specification and implementation of digital libraries are decisive tasks to achieve an effective management of documents, specific software tools have been created to help and facilitate the specification and implementation of digital libraries. However, few existing tools used to model digital libraries allow the specification of complex objects. Besides, this kind of complex data make more difficult the tasks of specification, modeling, and reusing of complex objects. The objective of this dissertation was to propose a digital library metamodel in order to specify instances of digital libraries that manage complex objects. The new metamodel was included in the 5SGraph tool. 5SGraph is a software tool based on the 5S theory (Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, and Societies) and provides a visual environment for the formal specification of digital libraries. The new metamodel was validated through: case studies, an evaluation with potential users, and the implementation of a digital library prototype containing legal documents. According to the results, the extended 5SGraph tool can be used to specify digital libraries of complex objects. The main contributions of this work are: the characterization of legal documents as complex objects; the specification of a metamodel to be used in the specification of digital libraries of complex objects; the implementation of a metamodel in the 5SGraph tool, making the tool capable of specifying digital libraries of complex objects; the presentation of some case studies using the 5SGraph tool to specify complex objects of digital libraries; validation of the new metamodel in the 5SGraph with potential users; and the specification and implementation of a digital library prototype containing complex objects related to legal documents

Abstract (sommario):
The process of creating content for digital games by hand is a costly and time consumingone. As the game industry expands, the need to reduce costs becomes ever more pressing. One solution to this problem being research today is procedural generation of content. In short, this means that an algorithm does the labor rather than a designer. In thisthesis we present such a method for automating the process of creating maps in digitalgames. Our method uses controllable software agents and mixed initiative (i.e. allowingthe designer and algorithm to take turns) to create geometry. We use stochastic agentsto create variation and deterministic agents to ensure playability. To control these agentswe use a set of input parameters which can be manipulated. Furthermore, the designerhas access to a number of tools including the ability to lock existing geometry, convertgeometry to other types, add geometry manually, as well as the ability to use agents onspecific areas of the map. We look at the game mode Battle in the digital game MarioKart 64 and show how our method can be used to create such maps. We conducted auser study on the output of the method and the results show that the quality is generallyfavorable.

Abstract (sommario):
International researchers demonstrate that modern training aids may improve teaching and learning process. It is appointed in analytic way that interactive learning computer-aided software tools are used more rarely than in other subjects. There are some reasons for that: programess are too complicated, they are not adjusted to curriculum and most of them is in foreign language. Analysis of internet sites on physics subject indicates that they mostly are accessible easily and have suitable, comprehensible navigation, also they are quite well animated. Considering results of analysis it is decided to create an interactive internet site which is coordinated with common curriculum and with standarts of education and would be devoted for training physics subject in 8 classes. This internet site was named “Rectilineal gradual moving”. When this training internet site was being designed, preference was given to active and mixed active types as well as to very high, high and medium high level of interaction since active learning computer-aided software tools interaction type directly stimulates actions of students. When the part of theory of rectilineal gradual moving was analysed, ways of presentation training material were chosen. The site was designed with programme Front Page 2003. For creation of interaction there are explored two language in script writing: VBScript and Java Script. Considering that these languages have not essential differences interaction of learning site... [to full text]

Abstract: In Brazil, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software are usually proprietary, expensive to acquire and deploy. Micro and small businesses could benefit greatly from the existence of more affordable ERP solutions. One possible solution would be to use open source software to meet this demand. Of relevance in this scenario there is the project Apache Open For Business, a suite of applications and a framework aimed at business management solutions. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the localization (i.e. adapting computer software to different cultural contexts) of this software, not only regarding to mere translation, but also the legal, tax and accounting aspects, seeking to increase its usability and feasibility for Brazilian businessmen.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M. Tech. (Engineering: Electrical)) -- Central University of technology, Free State, 2013
The South African (SA) manufacturing industry requires developing similar levels of sophistication and expertise in automation as its international rivals to compete for global markets. To achieve this, manufacturing plants need to be managed extremely efficiently to ensure the quality of manufactured products and these plants must also have the relevant infrastructure. Furthermore, this industry must also compensate for rapid product introduction, product changes and short product lifespan. To support this need, this industry must engage in the current trend in automation known as reconfigurable manufacturing. The aim of the study is to develop a reconfigurable assembly system with enhanced control capabilities by utilizing virtual commissioning. In addition, this system must be capable of assembling multiple different products of a product range; reconfigure to accommodate the requirements of these products; autonomously reroute the product flow and distribute workload among assembly cells; handle erroneous products; and implement enhanced control methods. To achieve this, a literature study was done to confirm the type of components to be used, reveal design issues and what characteristics such a system must adhere to. Software named DELMIA was used to create a virtual simulation environment to verify the system and simultaneously scrutinize the methods of verification. On completion, simulations were conducted to verify software functions, device movements and operations, and the control software of the system. Based on simulation results, the physical system was built, and then verified with a multi agent system as overhead control to validate the entire system. The final results showed that the project objectives are achievable and it was also found that DELMIA is an excellent tool for system verification and will expedite the design of a system. By obtaining these results it is indicated that companies can design and verify their systems earlier through virtual commissioning. In addition, their systems will be more flexible, new products or product changes can be introduced more frequently, with minimum cost and downtime. This will enable SA manufacturing companies to be more competitive, ensure increased productivity, save time and so ensure them an advantage over their international competition.
