Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIncreasingly, the risk assessment community has recognized the social and cultural aspects of vulnerability to hurricanes and other hazards that impact planning and public communication. How individuals and communities understand and react to natural hazard risk communications can be driven by a number of different cognitive, cultural, economic, and political factors. The social sciences have seen an increased focus over the last decade on studying hurricane understanding and responses from a social, cognitive, or decision science perspective, which, broadly defined, includes a number of disparate fields. This paper is a cross-disciplinary and critical review of those efforts as they are relevant to hurricane risk communication development. We focus on two areas that, on the basis of a comprehensive literature review and discussions with experts in the field, have received comparatively little attention from the hazards community: 1) research concerning visual communications and the way in which individuals process, understand, and make decisions regarding them and 2) the way in which vulnerable communities understand and interact with hurricane warning communications. We go on to suggest areas that merit increased research and draw lessons or guidance from the broader hazards/social science research realm that has implications for hurricane planning and risk communication, particularly the development and dissemination of hurricane forecast products.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the article is to study and analyse various desktop messengers, identify existing problems and ways to solve them, and apply innovative approaches to the implementation of a desktop messenger that combines a high level of security and excellent performance with a wide range of functionalities that meet modern user requirements. Desktop messengers have become an important component of everyday communication for many categories of users, providing a convenient and fast way to exchange various information. The article examines, in particular, how the integration of modern technologies into the communication process contributes to a change in the approach to communications, increasing the amount of information transmitted, reducing the time to receive a response, and providing the user with information about the receipt of the transmitted information by his or her “interlocutor” (or “interlocutors”). The research methods are the main methodological approaches and technological tools for creating high–performance and user-friendly messengers. The scientific novelty of the study is the analysis of modern technologies for developing platforms for supporting the online communication and communication process, the results of which can be used in the development of an own software product – a messenger. The article substantiates the relevance of developing a desktop messenger, which is due to the fact that fast and secure messaging is of great importance today since modern messengers have become one of the most important means of communication, facilitating remote work and so-called “social” communication. Conclusions. The paper investigates the known views on the modern approach to the development of desktop messengers. The analysis has led to the choice of the concept of developing a modern author’s messenger based on the use of C++ and Qt and, as a result, the prototype of the author’s messenger developed on its basis. The development of the messenger using C++ and Qt helps to solve the problems of security and privacy of communications (in particular, by protecting personal information distributed in the messenger). Encryption support, data protection, and access rights management are implemented using the capabilities of C++ and Qt. The proposed approach to messenger development provides one of the best solutions, reducing the separation between front- and back-end parts and facilitating development flexibility. This makes it possible to create scalable and high-performance messengers. In addition, this approach guarantees the security and performance optimization of desktop messengers and improves their functionality and usability.

Abstract (sommario):
Visual communication is critical in contemporary societies. Research in social sciences increasingly tends to mobilize the image, for example, in the form of photography, in its processes (in the collection and interpretation of information) and products (in the communication of research results), which leads to the need to reflect critically on its specificities. This paper aims to add to the analysis of the potentialities, limitations and challenges of the use of photography in social sciences research. For this purpose, the paper presents and discusses empirically collected documentary expressions, selected from an organizational case study based on their heuristic capacity to illustrate the argumentation put forth herein. It is concluded that the potential of the use of photography in research in social sciences is high, but it is essential that the researcher considers, besides more technical aspects and ethical complexities, that photography is, in part, also the materialization of a certain socially constructed representation of reality.

Abstract (sommario):
Communication of scientific knowledge has been caught up in a pedagogical struggle between science literacy ideologies. The backseat role taken by the teaching of the philosophical and sociological aspects of science has come under fire by those calling for a broader view of science to be made public under the umbrella term “critical science literacy”. In this paper, we argue that the lack of unfinished science in museums — science still in the making or still being debated — is a paradigm case where the richer, fuller view of science is being denied air by the presentation of science as a finished, objective set of facts. We argue that unfinished science offers us the opportunity to present the full complexity of science, including its social and philosophical aspects, and thus enabling the “critical” of critical science literacy.

This article reviews research contributions in political science and communication to the topic of nonverbal communication and politics from 2005 to 2015. The review opens with research on the content of nonverbal communication, then considers studies examining what moderates the impact of nonverbal aspects of political messages on attitudes and behavior and the mechanisms that underpin these effects. Over the period reviewed here, research shows that the nonverbal channel is rich in political information and is consequential for political decision making, particularly under certain circumstances, such as in low-information conditions. Visuals affect political decisions through cognitive and emotional routes. This review article also identifies several directions where further research is required, particularly with regard to social media, nonvisual aspects of nonverbal communication, the interplay of visual and verbal arguments, and the mechanisms behind the effects of nonverbal communication.

Abstract (sommario):
Currently, ethnic stereotypes are considered as phenomena that mediate the processes of intercultural perception, dialogue and interaction. This fact determines the relevance of it comprehensive interdisciplinary study by different sciences (sociology, political science, psychology, linguistics, etc.). In this article, ethnic stereotypes are analyzed, firstly, at the psychological level (types, functions, structure), and secondly, at the psycholinguistic and psychosemantic levels (from the point of view of the rationale for it diagnosis with using the semantic differential). The possibilities of the semantic differential for studying the content, consistency, direction and intensity of social stereotypes in general, as well as the method modifications for diagnosis ethnic stereotypes, are examined. The heuristic potential of semantic differential for diagnosing ethnic stereotypes as phenomena, on the one hand, reflecting various aspects of intercultural perception and dialogue, and, on the other hand, directly affecting the intercultural interaction, is shown on the example of empirical studies on ethnic stereotypes in the intercultural communication context. The results of ethnic stereotypes studies are of high practical importance for the development of programs for increase intercultural competence, which are in demand in various areas of modern society in the face of e globalization and the growth of intercultural contacts (education, business, tourism, etc.).

Abstract (sommario):
Acting as a usual means of everyday communication and collaboration, dialogue is also a fundamental mode of human presence in the world. It is innate and, therefore, feels organic to people. Nothing but a dialogue determines and defines the inborn human potential of reflexivity, empathy and communitivity. Naturally, it is hardly surprising that as a phenomenon, a dialogue constantly fell within the purview of most prominent European thinkers and throughout different historical epochs, in the spaces of philosophy and communication, it unfolded in a diverse and multidimensional manner. Ancient Greek philosopher Plato wrote in the form of dialogue, this way opening the possibility to a reader to learn about the world and the order of things as well as defining a certain relationship between the perceiving subject and the perceivable object. In the early Middle Ages, writings of Saint Augustine encouraged people to immerse into themselves and start a conversation with God, which established a certain living relationship between spaces empirical and transcendental. Much later, towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, German phenomenologist Edmund Husserl, who developed the theory of the intentionality of the consciousness, perceived that no living relationship between people is feasible without intersubjectivity. In this case, the communication is conditioned on the focus of at least two subjects on a certain object. This object, in particular, ensures the potential of the meaning, content and the purpose of communication. Another German author Martin Buber treated the dialogue as a phenomenon, in which an individual establishes a personal relationship with the Christian God, and this gives rise to a certain immediacy: a confrontation with the Ruler of the Kingdom of Heaven gives meaning to all the other interpersonal relationships. These are but few different philosophical interpretations of dialogue as a phenomenon. The universe of issues related to dialogue emerges from thinking perspectives of philosophers as well as communication theorists. On the one hand, the perspective of communication trivializes the phenomenon of dialogue, depriving it of its depth and profoundness; and on the other hand, it defines and specifies the concept of dialogue, assigning to it a form or function. This issue of the journal is devoted to the analysis of the phenomenon of dialogue both in the fields of philosophy and communication, inquiring into different contexts of its development. In her article Communication Solutions by Improving Interactive Art Projects, Gintarė Vainalavičiūtė analyses the relationship between visual arts and contemporary technologies, which determines both the rise of the forms of dialogue and non-traditional understanding of works of art. Mindaugas Stoškus contributed an article entitled Disciplines of Political Philosophy and Political Science: Antagonism, Cooperation or Indifference? in which he investigates the relationship between these two disciplines, conditions and problems pertaining to their dialogue, and the particularly intensified dynamics of the dialogue in the fifties of the 20th century. In their article Online Artistic Activism: Case-Study of Hungarian-Romanian Intercultural Communication, Gizela Horváth and Rozália Klára Bakó delve into the interactive relationship between works of art and their perceiver, as these works of art send messages via the social media environment. Moral Perception, Cognition, and Dialogue is an article authored by Vojko Strahovnik, in which he examines the causes for the rise of cases that hinder intercommunication and mutual understanding, such as disagreement, intercultural dialogues, etc. Problems of visual communication and the specificity of visual languages, bringing together subjects into dialogue are discussed by Arto Mutanen in his article Relativity of Visual Communication. Another article entitled Scientific Realism versus Antirealism in Science Education is a contribution by Seungbae Park, in which he attempts to define how the dialogue between teachers and students is possible, as he takes the position stating that the doctrine of scientific realism is much more effective than provided opportunities of scientific antirealism. And finally, Algis Mickūnas, in his article The Different Other and Dialogue, discusses the reasons why members of different communities find it difficult to establish dialogue-based relationships and why in some cases they remain imprisoned in the state of a monologue. This issue of the journal presents a truly wide field of investigations into opportunities and obstacles for communication, interaction and collaboration. It is pleasing to see that representatives of various humanities and social sciences joined the same dialogue. Looking forward to the productive insights in the future, the Editor would like to express her gratitude to the authors of this issue.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Introduction. At the current stage of development of economics, education, science and technology, the role of communication in interpersonal and business interaction of people is of particular importance, and therefore the urgency of training future professionals in the new environment is growing. There is a need to conduct research and reveal the essence of the concept of mass communication management. It should be noted that communication is seen as a complex multifaceted process of establishing and developing contacts between people, which generates the needs of joint activities and which includes the exchange of information, development of a common strategy of interaction of perception and understanding of another person. Purpose. The aim of the article is to generalize scientific ideas about the theoretical aspects of business communication ethics in mass communication management. Results. In order to form the methodological foundations of the new paradigm of mass communication management, there is a need to analyze the basic categories of communication. Research shows that there are different approaches to defining the categories of “interaction”, “communication” and their role in the management of mass communication. As a result of the research the main features of business communication, its types and forms are singled out. It is determined that communication is a complex process that consists of interdependent aspects, where one of the most important is the ethics of business communication. All information processes in society, we can refer to the term “social communication”. Thus “business communication” is defined as communication which purpose is the organization and optimization of industrial, scientific, commercial or other activity where interests of business, instead of concrete interlocutors come first. Conclusions. It is obvious that the importance of communication in business at the present stage of development of society is constantly growing. This process is explained by the fact that the interaction of communicators in the process of communication inevitably implies their certain mood, moral readiness to participate in the communication process. Such readiness often (and always in the process of business communication) acquires a conscious, volitional character, although sometimes it appears as something deeper, as a kind of subconscious entity. The importance of communication in management is explained by the achievement of the goal both in the organizational process of the enterprise and in the effective exchange of information. We are convinced that business development is possible with the introduction of effective communications as the main tool of the manager.

Abstract (sommario):
In times of crisis, science communication needs to be accessible and convincing. In order to understand whether these two criteria apply to concrete science communication formats, it is not enough to merely study the communication product. Instead, the recipient’s perspective also needs to be taken into account. What do recipients value in popular science communication formats concerning COVID-19? What do they criticize? What elements in the formats do they pay attention to? These questions can be answered by reception studies, for example, by analyzing the reactions and comments of social media users. This is particularly relevant since scientific information was increasingly disseminated over social media channels during the COVID-19 crisis. This interdisciplinary study, therefore, focuses both on science communication strategies in media formats and the related comments on social media. First, we selected science communication channels on YouTube and performed a qualitative multi-modal analysis. Second, the comments responding to science communication content online were analyzed by identifying Twitter users who are doctors, researchers, science communicators and those who represent research institutes and then, subsequently, performing topic modeling on the textual data. The main goal was to find topics that directly related to science communication strategies. The qualitative video analysis revealed, for example, a range of strategies for accessible communication and maintaining transparency about scientific insecurities. The quantitative Twitter analysis showed that few tweets commented on aspects of the communication strategies. These were mainly positive while the sentiment in the overall collection was less positive. We downloaded and processed replies for 20 months, starting at the beginning of the pandemic, which resulted in a collection of approximately one million tweets from the German science communication market.

Abstract Five major challenges in science communication This article gives an overview of five major challenges in the field of science communication – with a focus on the Dutch/Flemish situation and the role that communication scientists can play in tackling these challenges. The research field is fragmented and the balance between the practical and academic aspects of science communication can be improved. In policies there is a large emphasis on informing society, whilst science communication should also be a dialogue with society. Connecting with society is the third mission of universities, but reward systems for scientists who do this are rudimentary and should be improved. Incorrect science news is at least partly caused by universities sending out exaggerated press releases. Researchers should take responsibility for how their own universities communicate about their work. Social sciences and humanities are underrepresented both in science communication activities and science communication research and should be involved more.

In this introduction to the fourth volume of the journal Human-Machine Communication, we present and discuss the nine articles selected for inclusion. In this essay, we aim to frame some crucial psychological, sociological, and cultural aspects of this field of research. In particular, we situate the current scholarship from a historical perspective by (a) discussing humanity’s long walk with hybridity and otherness, at both the cultural and individual development levels, (b) considering how the organization of capital, labor, and gender relations serve as fundamental context for understanding HMC in the present day, and (c) contextualizing the development of the HMC field in light of seismic, contemporary shifts in society and the social sciences. We call on the community of researchers, students, and practitioners to ask the big questions, to ground research and theory in the past as well as the real and unfolding lifeworld of human-machine communication (including what HMC may become), and to claim a seat at the table during the earliest phases in design, testing, implementation, law and policy, and ethics to intervene for social good.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the essential skills for future science teacher candidates is scientific communication, while the background of sociocultural aspects influences communication which must have a scientific basis. This research aims to analyse the scientific communication skills of prospective science teacher based on sociocultural aspects. Quantitative survey research methods applied in this research, using a questionnaire as a data collection tool. The population in this research were students of natural science education programs at one of the state universities in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, while the samples are 87 students. The results of this study indicate that the sociocultural aspects of students vary with the characteristics of the area of origin, regional languages, different languages, regional cultures, and different social attitudes. The sociocultural aspects are specified in two levels, which are Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and More Knowledgeable Other (MKO). At the ZPD level, 67% of the students are in the intermediate criteria and 33% in the advanced criteria. While at the MKO level, the criteria are intermediate and advanced, with percentages almost equal to 49% and 51%, respectively. It was concluded that the profile of scientific communication skills of prospective science teacher based on sociocultural aspects was in the intermediate and advanced criteria. Students are indicated to experience “vernacular misconceptions” related to the sociocultural aspects of the use of various languages used in daily communication and writing. The frequency is dominated by the use of regional languages that are not relevant to scientific languages. Further research needs to be carried out on the identification of scientific misconceptions related to sociocultural aspects.

Abstract (sommario):
The article concentrates on the study of the current problem of communication aspects of secondary socialization in the modern information society. Media play a significant role in all areas of post-industrial society, and socialization processes, in particular secondary socialization, are no exception. In this article the phenomenon of secondary socialization is described, approaches to its comprehensive understanding both from the point of view of classics of sociology and modern researchers are offered. An idea of the mechanism of functioning of this social phenomenon is given from the author’s point of view. The importance of media as the main channel for the transmission of socializing content in the modern socialization process in a society with intense communication links is also studied. The concept of the “media significant other” is given as a new approach to understanding the communication aspects of secondary socialization in modern society. The essence of the “media significant other” concept is revealed in the connection with the phenomenon of the “significant other”, also its features and its place in the system of secondary socialization is considered. Using the example of influencers, the case of functioning of the “media significant other” in the information and socialization space is considered. The article analyzes the data of a study aimed at empirically fixing the existence of the phenomenon of “media significant others” as personalities from the media sphere who influence following respondents.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents the results of a quantitative survey conducted by the method of questionnaires, which was devoted to the attitude to the situation associated with the spread of coronavirus infection, including the study of the transformation of the sociotechnical imaginary in relation to the vaccination procedure. The article analyzes the values and attitudes of respondents in relation to medical technologies, hopes for the prospects and ways of getting out of the epidemic and the role of new vaccines in this. The study revealed that the majority of respondents did not associate the solution to the coronavirus problem with vaccination or the invention of a drug, hoping for the development of herd immunity or that the pandemic will end per se. A significant number of respondents have a negative attitude towards vaccination, fearing the unsafe vaccine. The survey showed that gender differences in attitudes towards vaccination against coronavirus infection, apparently, are not significant, but the differences in two age groups – young people under 35 and older people (36 – 72 y.o.) turned out to be more significant: among young people, a slightly more positive attitude was recorded to science and to a vaccine than among the older group of respondents. The article raises the question of how this attitude to medical technology and vaccination is formed and what should be the role of government communications in this matter.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract To date, social vulnerability research has focused primarily on the individual and household levels, and on social institutions relevant to these two benchmarks. In this paper, a widening of the perspective of social vulnerability to natural hazards is proposed to include socio-structural aspects. For a number of reasons, the sociological system theory, which is inextricably linked with the name of Niklas Luhmann, is an obvious choice for this undertaking. Firstly, Luhmann developed a consistent social theoretical definition of risk, which has significantly influenced risk and hazard research in social science. Furthermore, the system theory provides a theory of society that claims to be able to cover all social levels and to describe all social phenomena. The system theory assumes that in modern society social systems are formed of communications. Therefore, in this paper the view is taken that a system-theoretical inspired concept of social vulnerability must also assess communication. First, this paper describes empirical observations about the vulnerability of social systems. This is achieved on the one hand through a categorisation of four forms of social vulnerability. On the other hand, it is based on examples of vulnerability to flood risks in selected social systems. Finally, consideration is given to a system-theoretical concept of social vulnerability that sees the sensitivity of a social system in each of the respective system structures. Vulnerabilities can only be observed for a particular social system, because the configuration of system structures differs from system to system. These fundamental considerations have to be further explored infuture work on a consistent social theoretical concept of vulnerability.

Abstract (sommario):
Mediatization discourse has so far mainly been centered on media from institutional or social-constructionist approaches. The technological developments within communications industries coupled with the wider societal process of datafication might, however, beg for dusting off the smaller, although the long-time existing, technological approach to mediatization as a complement to the two other approaches, in order to understand aspects of automation and human-machine communication. This theoretical article explores how existing mediatization approaches can refocus to include lessons learned from human-machine communication. The first section accounts for the main mediatization approaches. The second section discusses debates on communication, artificiality, and meaning-making. The last section takes the example of the recruitment interview for discussing how mediatization theory can benefit from including a technological approach with an influx from human-machine communication, as well as how human-machine communication can learn from wider discussions within mediatization theory.

Abstract (sommario):
Man naturally is attracted towards stories. The message communicated via stories lasts longer in memories than those without having any story form. It effectively imparts the message. From prophets to the commons and from scholars to layman, each has employed the storytelling methodology for effective and result oriented communication. It shows that the communicative method of storytelling has remained quite successful. The storytelling method has been acknowledged as a successful method in modern pedagogy for teaching and preaching. In all religions, divine communication has also relied on the narrative method. More significantly, the Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad ? has used this method quite successfully. This paper seeks to argue that tried and tested for centuries, the storytelling method has been used with great expertise and care by Prophet Muhammad ? in his speeches to his audience. Since he was concerned to communicate his message very effectively, he not only used it but advanced this art to its climax. This paper will outline the etymology of ’’????‘‘storytelling and spell out its significance through Quran and Hadith literature. It will also highlight the spiritual aspects & future possibilities of research in this field.

<p><strong><em>The purpose of the study</em></strong><em> is to determine the level of synergy of the term «sociocommunications» within communication studies and to highlight the common and distinctive features of the use of the terms «social communications» and «sociocommunications» in other scientific fields.</em></p><p><strong><em>Research methodology.</em></strong><em> </em><em>The following methods were used to achieve the goal. Synergistic – for understanding the role and place of social communications and socio-communications in modern communicativistics. Analytical and synthetic – elaboration of the scientific source base. Content analysis – to distinguish the meaning of these phenomena in the context of the functioning of various sciences. Analytical and inductive methods – a general analysis of existing points of view on the use of the analyzed terms. </em></p><p><strong><em>The results.</em></strong><em> </em><em>Within the framework of communication studies, the term «sociocommunication» as a specific category of social communication can be used to describe the communication interaction between people within narrow, stable social groups (professional, educational, business, etc.). This term describes the interaction between people in a professional environment, in business communication, in marketing research, in advertising, PR and in other aspects of the functioning of such permanent social groups. At the same time, the term «social communication» can be used to denote completely different phenomena. We have not only an example of synergetics, but also a sample of polysemy, which in our case leads to the coexistence of many possible meanings for the term «social communication» – from being synonymous with the term «social communication» to the statement that social communication is a factor in the effectiveness of information activities in a specific cluster section, an element of studying the discourse of the specified content, a factor of linguistic information for a social group, an argument for the use of educational invention technologies in a specific field of knowledge and even a method of studying the information field, etc. </em></p><p><strong><em>Novelty.</em></strong><em> </em><em>The synergy of science leads to many paradoxes that seemed unthinkable ten years ago. The interpenetration of phenomena and phenomena, which once belonged exclusively to one direction of applied technologies and one field of knowledge, has acquired tangible consequences. Communicative studies as a science and social communications as a scientific field were no exception. Many phenomena and terms, traditionally, in the classical scientific circulation, characteristic recently of a single science (philology, sociology, political science, etc.) today feel quite freely and correctly as a sign of a certain applied or theoretical aspect of communication studies. This article is the first attempt to analyze the synergy of social communications and socio-communications as scientific phenomena. </em></p><p><strong><em>The practical significance</em></strong><em> is that the obtained results can be used for further scientific research on the terminological synergy of communicativistics. </em></p><p><strong><em>Key words: </em></strong><em>audience, communication, content, science, synergy, stratification. </em></p>

Abstract (sommario):
The criminal justice system is one arena in which nonscientists use scientific findings and expert opinions to aid decision making. Forensic science is a standard feature of criminal investigations, out-of-court settlements, and trials. Yet forensic science may be poorly understood by those who use it as a decision aid, with a consequent risk of contributing to miscarriages of justice. In this article, we discuss some of the contentious aspects of communicating expert opinion, and consider how research suggests that scientists might balance the competing concerns of scientific correctness and comprehensibility for nonscientists. Highlighting both research and theory, we argue that modifying language is a necessary component of ensuring understanding. However, the aim of transferring knowledge from a forensic scientist to a nonscientist is a complex task. Language modification alone is not sufficient; the practices and processes of communication require consideration. We argue that the dialogue and participation models of communication have much to offer to foster understanding of forensic science and enhance its value in the criminal justice system. We acknowledge some practical challenges to dialogue and participation approaches, and provide an example of how innovative organisational practices can help to facilitate effective interprofessional communication.

The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) organized a public forum in March 2015 at the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in collaboration with the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) of Japan. Discussion focused on three topics – bridging the gap between scientific theory and practice, how science and technology could contribute to practical Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and the role of social science in DRR. These sessions led to three major recommendations: 1) Enhanced collaboration between the private sector and academia 2) Multisectoral collaboration, including local schools and communities, to make data and technologies useful, usable and accessible 3) Social science elements such as psychology, cultural studies, communication, ethics and history incorporating disaster risk sciences because most current problems involve social rather engineering aspects. Social science potentially balances qualitative and quantitative methods well.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines examines institutional communication, which performs the main function in the process of socialization of the individual in society. Considering that the situation when a person becomes a member of only a certain group is not found practically , it is necessary to analyze the position of the individual relative to different groups, as well as its functional capabilities in each group. All social and practical issues related to communication are relevant and all institutional relations depend on language communication. Therefore, it is this communication that organizes society and allows a person to live and develop in it, bringing their behavior in line with the actions and behavior of others. This defines various aspects and situational forms of relationship research. Without proper development of forms of communication, it is almost impossible to develop such spheres of human activity as education, education, health, science, art, politics, ideology. When we say that society is divided into various social institutions, we pay great attention to understanding institutional relations. We are reviewing the opinions of scientists who have studied social institutions extensively.

Abstract (sommario):
Numerous studies have shown that teachers significantly shape student's learning context. Socially and emotionally competent teachers tend to develop supportive and encouraging relationship with their students by promoting intrinsic motivation, focusing on student's strengths and abilities, mediating through conflict situations and encouraging appropriate communication and prosocial behaviour. Teachers with good communication skills will create a more successful teaching and learning ambience for the students, and without communication, the teaching and learning process will not take place. Educators, parents and public today recognize the need for an educational agenda to improve academic performance, but also to enhance students' social and communicational competence. The aim of the present study was to examine social and communication competence of the students of educational sciences and teacher education at the University of Zagreb Department Of Croatian Studies. As part of the most important aspects of the future educational work, the participants pointed out independence at work, the awareness that they would contribute to the future of the society and the awareness that they play a useful role in society. Participants also expressed optimism about their communication skills with students, planning and organizing teaching process and maintaining discipline, and to some less extent their competences for successful cooperation with students’ parents. Results were discussed in terms of possibilities to contribute to future teachers’ education.

Abstract (sommario):
Online citizen science projects have demonstrated their usefulness for research, however little is known about the potential benefits for volunteers. We conducted 39 interviews (28 volunteers, 11 researchers) to gain a greater understanding of volunteers' motivations, learning and creativity (MLC). In our MLC model we explain that participating and progressing in a project community provides volunteers with many indirect opportunities for learning and creativity. The more aspects that volunteers are involved in, the more likely they are to sustain their participation in the project. These results have implications for the design and management of online citizen science projects. It is important to provide users with tools to communicate in order to supporting social learning, community building and sharing.

This paper seeks to introduce a strategy of science communication: Total SciComm or all-out science communication. We proposed that to maximize the outreach and impact, scientists should use different media to communicate different aspects of science, from core ideas to methods. The paper uses an example of a debate surrounding a now-retracted article in the Nature journal, in which open data, preprints, social media, and blogs are being used for a meaningful scientific conversation. The case embodied the central idea of Total SciComm: the scientific community employs every medium to communicate scientific ideas and engages all scientists in the process.

Abstract (sommario):
Western science and academia have entered the new millennium with the growing realisation that their theoretical and utilitarian limits have been reached. A particular threshold is experienced across traditional academic disciplines, which is visible in the fact that, on the one hand, the intensity of social, environmental, psychological, health-related and communicational problems people deal with in their everyday lives is increasing; on the other hand, theoretical models and intervention programs that scholarly work provides do not meet the growing necessity. Our paper presents a research project whose starting-point aims are to explore the doctor-patient communication dyad, its functions in the healing process, and to propose a theoretical as well as applicative way forward. In the plans for our research, we aim to study the integrative medical approach and the ways in which language and communication processes allow healing to happen and optimal health to be preserved.

Abstract (sommario):
The article interprets and systematizes the idea of monitoring as a research method in the field of social communication sciences for the solution of traditional issues of journalism science and outlines the prospects of its application in view of the current issues of media science, which introduce into the research field the latest trends in the development of the mass media system at the current stage of deployment information society. The scientific value of monitoring as a research method is inseparable from its ability to see mass media as a complex heterogeneous system object and to ensure systematicity (complexity of vision, comparability of data, consistency of aspects of object analysis) of observations of this object at its different levels and in different sections. It is also important to be aware of the need to see the background as a theoretical basis for interpreting monitoring data. Self-sufficient, self-valued empirical monitoring studies of mass media activity can be good material for larger research projects, which demonstrates the high research potential of the monitoring method. Monitoring studies of mass media is the accumulation of empirical material for large-scale research projects in the field of social communications of both synchronic and diachronic type. However, only qualitative data from monitoring studies can be adequately used in the future and productively included in large-scale scientific projects, where comparison of data, combination of disparate empirical material with other analytical data is expected. Monitoring studies of mass media is a perspective of using the accumulation of empirical material for media critical studies and providing recommendations and practical advice for the implementation of mass media activities of editorial teams. This is the potential of monitoring research in the aspect of management decisions in the mass media system. The latest media phenomena that are of research interest, but have not yet entered the science of social communications as an object and subject of scientific understanding, with clearly defined parameters, are probably promising material for monitoring observations. This is a question of understanding the potential of the monitoring method in its application to the newest media phenomena that are significantly transforming the sphere of mass communication activity. Among the media phenomena that can become material for monitoring studies, the author of the article sees, first of all, such notable and influential phenomena as constructive journalism (journalism of solutions) and brand journalism. Monitoring provides an opportunity to verify, through the observation of extensive empirical material, the theoretical statements of scientists regarding the requirements for constructive journalism and brand journalism, which are formulated on the basis of the construction of a conceptual model of this type of mass media work. Thanks to monitoring, it is possible to study constructive journalism and brand journalism in terms of their use of forms of information submission, the specifics of addressing narrow target segments of the mass audience, technologies for retaining the recipient’s attention, etc. The data obtained during the monitoring can be used in a comparative study in the future, which can significantly expand the understanding of modern science about the latest media phenomena, which are still difficult to fit into the limits of scientific interpretations. If we see the latest trends and phenomena in the mass communication environment as indicators of transformations and look for factors of significant changes and shifts in social communication activity, then monitoring as a research method can be extremely useful and promising in understanding changes in the mass media system.

Abstract (sommario):
Sometimes scientists live real dramas or undergo social and psychological conflicts which have a positive or negative influence on the development and recognition of their research, discoveries and inventions in society, including the way they are recorded in history. This being so, the question is: to what extent can science be communicated to the public at large by the use of scientists' biographies as a motivational strategy? The controversy arises from the fact that usual (classical) science has traditionally argued for the separation (or de-linking) of the research (the object) from the researcher (the subject). Thus, if the above-mentioned motivational strategy is used in scientific communication, it could break a dominant methodological trend and consequently lead to a questioning of the myth of axiological neutrality in science. The communication of science by means of scientists' biographies could be useful for reaching a specific public, more directed towards emotional aspects, thereby awakening its interest in science, even amid cultural differences and in environments where interest in science and its utility is lacking. It could also reveal human aspects of the everyday life of scientists, bringing them closer to the public at large, which would contribute to the dissemination of science and knowledge.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines two aspects of multi-user virtual reality (VR) systems; the socio-technical shaping of these systems and the social relations inside multi-user virtual worlds. The paper begins with an overview of the history of networked interactive computer graphics and examines the main factors which are currently shaping networked VR systems. The second part explores the social relations between users inside virtual worlds and makes comparisons with other forms of computer-mediated-communication. In the conclusion, these two parts are linked: how is the development of multi-user virtual reality technology influencing how users interact within virtual worlds - and vice versa?

Abstract (sommario):
Communication Research field has an extraordinary growth pattern, indeed bigger than other research fields. In order to extract knowledge from such amount, intelligent techniques are needed. In such a way, using bibliometric techniques, the evolution of the conceptual, social and intellectual aspects of this research field could be analysed, and hence, understood. Although the communication research field has been widely analysed using bibliometric techniques and science mapping tools, a conceptual analysis of the whole communication research field is still needed. Therefore, this article introduces the first science mapping analysis in the communication research field based on the Web of Science Subject Category "Communication," showing its conceptual structure and scientific evolution. SciMAT, a bibliometric science mapping software tool based on co-word analysis and h-index, is applied using a sample of 33.627 research documents from 1980 to 2013 published in 74 main communication journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports of the Web of Science. The results show that research conducted in the communication research is concentrated on the following sixteen disconnected thematic areas: “children”, “psychological aspects”, “news”, “audience”, “surveys”, “advertising”, “health”, “relationship”, “gender”, “discourse”, “telephone communication”, “public relation”, “telecommunications”, “public opinion”, “activism” and “internet”. These areas have progressively disconnected among them, which drives to a Communication field relatively fragmented.
