Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents some research and a business case study carried out in a European project focused on Concurrent Engineering and the implementation of data exchange standards in the aeronautics industry. It deals with the use of the STEP AP209 standard dedicated to the exchange of finite element analysis data. Applied in the context of Concurrent Engineering within the extended enterprise, the STEP AP209 standard should enhance the communication, exchange, and sharing of product data between mechanical engineering and analysis experts across distributed sites. The development of a translator from STEP AP209 to SAMCEF (commercial FE solver) has been carried out and evaluated on an aircraft engine component.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to review national aeronautics and space administration (NASA’s) broad investments in electrified aircraft propulsion (EAP). NASA investments are guided by an assessment of potential market impacts, technical key performance parameters, and technology readiness attained through a combination of studies, enabling fundamental research and flight research. Design/methodology/approach The impact of EAP varies by market and NASA is considering three markets as follows: national/international, on-demand mobility and short-haul regional air transport. Technical advances in key areas have been made that indicate EAP is a viable technology. Flight research is underway to demonstrate integrated solutions and inform standards and certification processes. Findings A key finding is that sufficient technical advances in key areas have been made, which indicate EAP is a viable technology for aircraft. Significant progress has been made to reduce EAP adoption barriers and further work is needed to transition the technology to a commercial product and improve the technology, so it is applicable to large transonic aircraft. Practical implications Significant progress has been made to reduce EAP adoption barriers and further work is needed to transition the technology to a commercial product and improve the technology, so it is applicable to large transonic aircraft. Originality/value This paper will review the activities of the hybrid gas-electric subproject of the Advanced Air Transport Technology Project, the Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology Project and the X-57 Flight Demonstration Project, and discuss the potential EAP benefits for commercial and military applications. This paper focuses on the vehicle-related activities, however, there are related NASA activities in air space management and vehicle autonomy activities, as well as a breakthrough technology project called the Convergent Aeronautics Solutions Project. Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, worldwide environmental issue, associated to reduction of pollutant and greenhouse emissions are gaining considerable attention. Aviation sector contribution to the whole CO2 released accounts to around 2%, but it is expected to grow in the next future due to increase of demand. Probably, combustion engine design and fuel efficiency have already reached their optimum technology level and only a breakthrough as hybrid-electric propulsion could be able to satisfy the new international more demanding requirements. However, an improvement of the technology readiness level of hybrid-electric propulsion is strongly necessary and many operational and safety challenges should be addressed. In the work here reported, a hybrid-electric model was designed and developed for general aviation aircrafts, by means of the Mathworks® Matlab – Simulink 1D/0D simulation environment. Both thermal and electric energy storage units, transmission systems and power management devices were considered and the overall performances were evaluated during cruise phase and a conventional training mission, characterized by several run(lap) “touch-and-go”. Furthermore, an innovative mathematical methodology was implemented for battery pack discharge profile interpolation. Finally, reliability and accuracy of the new proposed model were evaluated through comparison with the commercial code Simcenter AMESim® software and an average bias only equal to 5% was achieved.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to support plant growth is a radical departure from use of gas-discharge lamps, which were developed in mid-19th and widely adopted by the industry during the 20th century. Initial investigation by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the late 1980s on the use of LEDs to grow plant in space is resulting in an industry-wide transition from gas discharge to solid-state lighting systems. This global transformation is given urgency by national policies to reduce energy consumption and being facilitated by ready access to information on LEDs. The combination of research, government policy, and information technology has resulted in an exponential increase in research into the use and application of LED technology in horticulture. Commercial horticulture has identified the opportunities provided by LEDs to optimize light spectra to promote growth, regulate morphology, increase nutrient content, and reduce operating costs. LED-light technology is enabling the development of innovative lighting systems, and is being incorporated into large-scale plant factories for the production of edible, ornamental, and medicinal plants. An overview of prevalence of readily accessible information on LEDs and implications for future adoption in horticulture is discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract ITA and EMBRAER are currently executing the research project Automation of Aircraft Structural Assembly (AASA) whose goal is to implement a robotic cell for automating the riveting process of aeronautical structures. The proposal described herein complements the AASA project, adds other manufacturing processes, namely sanding and polishing of aircraft surfaces. To implement the additional processes AASA project resources and facilities were used (robots and metrology systems) and devices designed and /or acquired to allow sharing of these resources. Among these, an Automatic Tooling Support for AERonautics structures (ATS_AER) was designed and built; also, a robot tool changer with high load capacity was acquired. The outcome of this research project is the evaluation of the feasibility of automating the processes of sanding and polishing metal surfaces in the aircraft manufacture using robots. The operating method adopted for surface treatment employed the ‘U’ type trajectory optimised to be run by a KUKA robot KR 500. The sanding process has been applied to aluminum metal sheet specimen sized 2•18ft2 (0•20m2) and used commercial 600 and 800 sandpaper. The automated sanding process yielded an average value of RA 0•48 ± 0•08 which is 25% more efficient when compared to the traditional, manual process whose average value of RA is 0•75 ± 0•51.

Abstract (sommario):
The complexity of sandwich structures is a challenge for aeronautics designers. Sandwich construction is widely used in both the aerospace and commercial industries because it is an extremely lightweight structural approach with high rigidity and strength/weight ratios. Although today's technology offers the possibility to combine a variety of materials for these structure solutions, in aviation only a few materials are accepted. This paper presents the technological process of making these sandwich structures, as well as a study of the characterization and testing of a sandwich structure to analyze the behavior from a mechanical point of view. The conclusions of the paper represent an experimental basis on which further research will be built.

Abstract (sommario):
DLR currently investigates the use of Doppler wind lidar as sensor within feedforward gust alleviation control loops on fast-flying fixed-wing aircraft. Such a scheme imposes strong requirements on the lidar system such as sub-m/s precision, high rate, high spatial resolution, close measurement ranges and sensitivity to mixed and pure molecular backscatter. We report on the development of a novel direct-detection Doppler wind lidar (DD-DWL) within these requirements. This DD-DWL is based on fringe-imaging of the Doppler-shifted backscatter of UV laser pulses in a field-widened Michelson interferometer using a fast linear photodetector. A prototype for airborne operation has been ground-tested in early 2018 against a commercial coherent DWL, demonstrating its ability of measuring close-range wind speeds with a precision of 0.5 m/s, independent of the actual wind speed.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to their attractive properties, such as high energy and power density, Lithium-ion batteries are currently the most suitable energy storage system for powering portable electronic equipment, electric vehicles, etc. However, they are still affected by safety and stability problems that need to be solved to allow a wider range of applications, especially for critical areas such as power networks and aeronautics. In this paper, the issue of overdischarge abuse has been addressed on Lithium-ion cells with different anode materials: a graphite-based anode and a Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO)-based anode model. Tests were carried out at different depths of discharge (DOD%) in order to determine the effect of DOD% on cell performance and the critical conditions that often make the cell fail irreversibly. Tests on graphite anode cells have shown that at DOD% higher than 110% the cell is damaged irreversibly; while at DOD% lower than 110% electrolyte deposits form on the anodic surface and structural damage affects the cathode during cycling after the overdischarge. Furthermore, at any DOD%, copper deposits are found on the anode. In contrast with the graphite anode, it was always possible to recharge the LTO-based anode cells and restore their operation, though in the case of DOD% of 140% a drastic reduction in the recovered capacity was observed. In no case was there any venting of the cell, or any explosive event.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) procurement system broadly, starting from the top down with further examination of the protest process. It asks whether the protest process ensures fairness and transparency in the competition between commercial companies to win the contracts solicited by NASA. As a case study on the protest process, and to help answer the question, the article examines the recent Blue Origin protest regarding the Human Landing System and the SpaceX lunar lander contract award. Finally, the article concludes that the protest procedure is vital in ensuring the procurement process is fair and that NASA is held accountable for its decisions when it comes to spending public funds. Abstract (sommario):
[Truncated abstract] “Open Skies” is the term given to a relatively recent (1992) policy initiative of the United States in its pursuit of the deregulation of international air transportation. It represents the latest in a long line of similar initiatives which the U.S. has been pursuing almost since the inception of the aviation industry. Essentially “Open Skies” is little more than a specific type of bilateral aviation agreement between two nations (and often between more than two nations) which typically provides for open entry on routes, unrestricted capacity and frequency on routes, and unrestricted air traffic rights. The significance of Open Skies agreements is that they appear to encapsulate general world-wide trends towards open economies characterised by a minimum of government interference and a maximum reliance on market forces to allocate scarce resources ... Australia however is not one of the nations seeking to become a party to such an agreement with the U.S. despite attempts by that nation to persuade Australia to do so and the question is: Can or should Australia resist attempts by the United States to bring it within the expanding umbrella of Open Skies, or are there other practical alternatives open to Australia? After examining the history of the development of Open Skies agreements and their international legal foundation, this thesis argues that there are strong considerations of policy and economics why Australia should embrace Open Skies initially at least on a regional basis centred in the Asia Pacific region, rather than with the United States. Implicit in that proposal is the fact that in terms of its constitutional and legal system, Australia has the legal capacity to enter into Open Skies agreements. The parties to such a regional Open Skies agreement might at a later date choose to enter into a multilateral Open Skies agreement with the United States, if economic and political conditions are suitable for them to do so. On the assumption that a form of Open Skies policy will eventually be adopted by Australia this thesis examines the constitutional and domestic legal regulatory framework for aviation within Australia, and the changes if any which would be required to it, if Australia was to embrace such a policy.

Abstract (sommario):
This inquiry examines aviation futures, within the broad context of sustainable consumption and ecological sustainability. Increasing mobility and rapid growth of road and air transport have been identified as key consumption issues, especially in relation to calls for deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. Economics and globalisation concerns have dominated recent academic studies of air transport. There is a growing critique, however, of growth-based aviation futures on a range of ecological, resource, security and health grounds. This inquiry adds to that critique. Its primary research aim is to identify and articulate visions and policies for aviation futures within an ecological framework. Analysis of relevant literatures, including those on sustainable consumption, transport and tourism, is complemented by an analysis of aviation and tourism growth trends worldwide, with specific reference to Asia-Pacific and Australian data. A case study of the privatisation and expansion of Canberra International Airport in the Australian Capital Territory is used to provide a global-local link and to address the airport aspects of aviation. The range of visions and policy measures are finally considered within broad consciousness and frameworks strategies for the transition to sustainability. An important conclusion is the strong need for independent institutions such as policy bodies and think tanks - working in conjunction with community groups- to develop and promote policy discourses and futures visions that challenge the prevailing hegemony of the business-political nexus.

Abstract (sommario):
The thesis in the first part examines the notion of risk and describes the process of risk management with emphasis on the identification of emerging threats to civil aviation and on the adoption of new risk handling techniques.
In the second part, the role of law into the airlines' management regime is examined especially in the light of two prima facie conflicting trends: liberalization of market access and increased State involvement in war risk, safety and security issues. Furthermore, the contractual and tortious/delictual exposures of airlines are being scrutinized and the ways to handle them are being analyzed.
The main objectives are (i) to demonstrate that risk management is not restricted to insurance, but involves a number of techniques and procedures that have the potential not only to minimize risk but also to turn risk into opportunity and value and (ii) to identify the role of law as a management tool in the oncoming liberalized aviation environment.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter presents a summary of the description and preliminary results of the use case related to the implementation of artificial intelligence tools in the emerging technology called wireless avionics intra-communications (WAICs). WAICs aims to replace some of the cable buses of modern aircraft. This replacement of infrastructure leads to: (1) complexity reduction of future airplanes, (2) creation of innovative services where wireless links are more flexible than wireline links, and mainly (3) a considerable weight reduction, which in turn leads to fuel consumption efficiency, increase of payload, as well as range extension. Therefore, WAICs is expected to have a large impact on the aeronautics industry, propelling a new generation of greener, more efficient, and less expensive aeronautical services. However, there are still several reliability, trust, interoperability and latency issues that need to be addressed before this technology becomes commercial. It is expected that AI will boost the applicability of this technology, contributing to the realization of the concept of “fly-by-wireless”.

Abstract (sommario):
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being used for commercial, scientific, agricultural and infrastructural enhancement to alleviate maladies. The objective of this chapter is to review existing capabilities and ongoing studies to overcome difficulties associated with the deployment of the agricultural unmanned aerial vehicle in obstacle-rich farms for pesticides and fertilizer application. By review of various literature, it is apparent that the potential for real-time and near real-time exists but the development of technology for quality imagery and rapid processing leading to real-time response is needed. The Infrared, time of flight and millimeter wavelength radar sensors for detecting farm and flight environment obstacles appear promising. The autonomous mental development algorithm, and the simultaneous localization and mapping technology are, however, ahead of others in achieving autonomous identification of obstacles and real-time obstacle avoidance. They are, therefore, found fit for further studies and development for deployment on agricultural unmanned aerial vehicles for obstacle-rich farms.

Abstract (sommario):
Modularization of hybrid-electric propulsion for commercial aircraft is becoming a reality in air transportation. The main intent of an electric architecture is to produce less carbon emissions and advance towards sustainability in the aeronautics industry. Due to regulatory and customer requirements for new technologies aimed at climate change and pollution, the integration of hybrid electric engine design become more challenging. Conceptual modular and integral product architectures are being compared with conventional and new constructions. A Design Structure Matrix (DSM) model is developed to analyze configuration of sub-component and their relationships through interaction between system elements. The DSM model includes product decomposition and cyclic task interdependencies to understand the extent of modularity in the product life cycle. The traditional turbofan engine architecture will be compared with hybrid electric propulsion engine architecture. The analysis indicates that the electric engine configuration constitutes a shift to a more distributed and less modular architecture. The DSM model reported a 19% increase in density of connectivity between components and 58% decrease in terms of structural complexity. The significance of these changes demonstrates that the more distributed architecture of the fully electric engine architecture requires less effort in system integration than the geared traditional turbofan architecture.

These perspectives are primarily reflected on a global scale for 2050 with individual perspectives of the continuation of current technology, advancement in technology and operations, aggressive development of sustainable fuels and a technologically aggressive perspective. Where is considered the average annual percentage of air traffic growth, technology development, improvements in operations and infrastructure, sustainable fuels (SAF – sustainable aviation fuel), and use of offsetting. These scenarios will allow an analysis of the developments studied, with reference to the relationship between CO2 emissions from air transport and the volume of passengers transported, use of new more sustainable models for short and long-distance routes, discrepancies in the development of countries and consequently in achieving the targets. It also enables an overview of the aeronautical industry in the face of various barriers at political, social, economic, and technological level.

Abstract (sommario):
As globalization increases, supply chains are becoming increasingly complex and vulnerable, making the management of their security an important part of corporate management. The need to adopt control and prevention measures that allow for guaranteeing security in international commercial operations is essential to prevent becoming a target of these threats. Some of these threats are terrorism, piracy and theft. Within the food industry, food terrorism has gained relevance due to the extreme consequences it may have on both public health and the market. Food terrorism refers to the intentional contamination of food in any link of the supply chain, which covers everything from production to consumption. This chapter deals with the problems of food terrorism and makes a proposal that allows to establish a management system to prevent intentional food contamination in the supply chain through managing risks and improving security in the supply chain on this aspect.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. This paper presents the application of low- and high-fidelity finite beam elements to analyze the dynamic response of aerospace structures subjected to random excitations. The refined structural models are developed with the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), enabling arbitrary finite element solutions to be easily generated. The solution scheme uses power spectral densities and the modal reduction strategy to reduce the computational burden. The response of an aluminum box beam is studied and compared with a solution obtained by a commercial code. Considering the root-mean-square value of the axial stress, an estimation of the fatigue life of the structure is obtained.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. In this paper, we simulate the nonlinear deployment mechanics of a modified flasher origami structure designed to be a deployable solar panel. We compare reduced-order bar-and-hinge simulations, where panels are modelled as bar assemblies connected by joints and torsional springs, with results obtained from commercial finite element software. Through this comparison, we demonstrate the ability of the bar-and-hinge approach to capture key features of the origami behaviour at a fraction of the time needed to perform regular finite-element simulations. We also provide details on how to properly tune the bar properties to simulate panels made bonding printed circuit boards to textile, and the joint properties to mimic folds that are made of fabric and flexible circuit interconnects.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. A data-driven approach based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) techniques is here proposed for Structural Health Monitoring of large in-orbit flexible systems. Damage scenarios are generated via a Finite Element commercial code to train and test the machine learning model, by considering equivalent properties of the composite material of the solar panels. The fully coupled 3D equations for the flexible spacecraft are integrated to test typical profiles of attitude manoeuvres in case of different damages. The DNN model is trained using sensor-measured time series responses, with each response associated with the label of the corresponding damage scenario, and tested via k-folding approach. This methodology offers a promising approach to detect structural damage in solar arrays on spacecraft using machine learning techniques.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Over the last decades, the rapid growth of the consumption of fossil fuel has generated an increased need for energy sustainability. The negative impact on the environment and now, as a global society, the dependence on fossil fuel have been questioned. For contrasting these adverse effects, NASA calls on the aeronautic industry to reduce aircraft fuel burn by 70% by 2025 in their N+3 concepts. Following high-profile government and industry studies, electric aircraft propulsion has emerged as an important research topic, this includes all-electric, hybrid electric, and turbo-electric architectures. The paper overviews the recent state-of-art about the innovative propulsion systems exploring the operating logic, their technological requirements, the ongoing research, and development in all the components necessary to make this technological change a feasible option for the future of passenger flight. It will be also reported the existing commercial products, prototypes, demonstrators for having a precise picture of the situation.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Spacecraft fragmentation due to collisions with space debris is a major concern for space agencies and commercial entities, since the production of collisional fragments is one of the major sources of space debris. It is in fact believed that, in certain circumstances, the increase of fragmentation events could trigger collisional cascade that makes the future debris environmental not sustainable. Experimental studies have shown that the fragmentation process is highly complex and influenced by various factors, such as the material properties, the velocity and angle of the debris impact and the point of collision (e.g. central, glancing, on spacecraft appendages). In recent years, numerous impact tests have been performed, varying one or more of these parameters to better understand the physics behind these phenomena. In this context some tests have been also performed at the hypervelocity impact facility of the university of Padova. This paper provides an overview of the main experiments performed, the most critical issues observed and proposes some future directions for further research. Moreover, it summarizes the current state of research in spacecraft fragmentation, including the methods and techniques used to simulate debris impacts, the characterization of fragment properties and the analysis of the resulting debris cloud.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The work focuses on the study of the structural behavior of a composite floor beam in the cargo area of a commercial aircraft subjected to static and dynamic loads. Experimental tests have been performed in the laboratories of the Dept. of Industrial Engineering (UniNa) jointly with the development of numerical models suitable to correctly simulate the phenomenon through the LS-DYNA software. The definition of a robust numerical model allowed to evaluate the possibility of buckling triggering. The test article was equipped with potting supports on both ends of the tested beam, filling the pots with epoxy resin toughened with glass fiber nanoparticles. This allowed to uniformly load the beam ends in compression and to carry out the tests loading the specimen statically and dynamically, to observe the differences in the behavior of the beam in correspondence with the two different types of applied load. The result obtained through the comparison between the numerical model and the experimental test is that the dynamic buckling is triggered by a quantitatively smaller load than in the static case. Furthermore, it has been observed that the experimental compressive displacement to trigger the dynamic buckling instability is greater than the displacement observed in the static case.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The paper presents the main characteristics of the high flux solar simulator facility designed and developed at University of Padova as key enabling technology to evaluate the effectiveness of satellite hardware for missions to the inner planets of the Solar System. The designed solar simulator can reproduce the intensity and spectral distribution of the Sun's radiation up to 8 Solar constants (around 10000 Watt/m2) and the emitted flux can be directed to the viewport of a Thermal Vacuum Chamber in order to test the performance of space equipment under representative pressure and temperature conditions. Angles of incidence between 30° and 90° can be achieved using a motorised setup within the thermal chamber while different intensities of sunlight can be obtained by properly choosing the emitting lamp and regulating the electric power. After the verification of optical path alignment, a series of tests has been conducted to evaluate the flux homogeneity installing a commercial pyranometer on cartesian reference and moving the slide within the target area. A final Class A classification for the spatial non-uniformity of irradiance as for ASTM E927-19 has been achieved for the central target area. The facility has afterwards operated for validation campaign of satellite radiators in simulated orbital condition, verifying the repeatability of reproduced flux during continuous long-term operation.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The multi-spectral data acquired with either satellite imagery, UAV or tethered and stratospheric balloons can be used to calculate vegetation indices directly related to the well-being of the crops providing a quantitative information about its health and growth. The vegetation indices are calculated combining measurements from different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically in the visible and near-infrared ranges. The aim of this work is to integrate the remote sensing data with in-situ collected measurements in order to validate remote observations for monitoring soybean water status and requirements. The study is conducted in Italy on a field of 160 x 40 m2, divided into four plots of 40 x 40 m2; two of them are irrigated at 100% of the CRW (Crop Water Requirement) and two irrigated at 70% of CWR. In each plot tensiometers and capacitive probes directly measure the soil moisture, along with a climate station used to monitor environmental parameters. The in-situ data are correlated with multi band satellite images by the PlanetScope constellation providing a ground resolution of 3 m. The use of UAV or balloons is needed to monitor the diurnal variation of the indices, as the satellite revisit time is once per day around 9:00 and 10:00 UTC on the site. The balloon payload is equipped with commercial cameras and dedicated filters to acquire images in the same spectral bands as satellites. The importance of this study lies in the possibility of managing the fields irrigation basing on the actual physiological need of the crop rather than relying on a predefined timetable, resulting in a more efficient and environmentally responsible irrigation. The article will present the methodology and the instruments applied, together with the results obtained.
