Abstract (sommario):
We examined the avifauna of Saurashtra University Campus (SUC), Rajkot, Gujarat from July to December 2017. The study area was divided into four sections: North (N), East (E), South (S) and West (W) and surveyed over 18 visits (four line transects/visit). We recorded a total of 82 bird species from 67 genera, 40 families and 16 orders. Of these 57 species were terrestrial and 25 aquatic. By population size the most abundant birds were members of Columbidae (28%), Sturnidae (13%), and Charadridae (8%). Seventy per cent of birds observed (n=7665) were classed as very common and 2% (n=261) as very rare. Species density (S/N = 3.39) and population density (n/N = 196) were at their maximum in December. Ecological indices on temporal base reveal high species richness and Simpson diversity (1/D =17.0 and 1-D= 0.942) in August and November and Shannon diversity was high (H’=3.275) in November during study period.

Abstract (sommario):
Faced with a growing demand for adequate policies and programs that meaningfully address sexual violence on campus, the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba have introduced legislation requiring all post-secondary institutions to institute a sexual assault policy. The remaining provinces and territories do not have similar legislation. In absence of such legislation, using the case study of Alberta, we examined how equipped post-secondary institutions in this province are to assist students in need. Utilizing publicly available data we examined: 1) whether Alberta’s post-secondary institutions have a sexual violence policy which is readily and easily accessible to the student; and 2) the ease with which students can access university resources and support services for sexual violence. The results indicate that most institutions do not have an accessible policy and support services for students in need. We are hopeful that this study can inform those designing and advocating for sexual violence policies on campus to institute measures to clarify institutions’ sexual violence policies, increase accessibility to those policies, create policies where they are missing, and work on clarifying the availability of resources for students on and off campus.

Abstract (sommario):
In August 1996, several 4- to 6-m-tall Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir. in Adams County, PA, were found bearing numerous dead branches and/or dead tops. The trees had been severely stressed by being ball-and-burlapped and replanted in 1993. Distinct cankers occurred between the living and dead portions of stems and branches. Associated with these cankers were abundant, reddish-orange, erumpent stroma, each bearing three to 10 similarly colored cupulate ascomata. The latter contained asci bearing two to four large, muriform ascospores that, as they matured, formed large numbers of small ascoconidia, indicating the pathogen was Thyronectria balsamea (Cooke & Peck) Seeler (= Nectria balsamea Cooke & Peck). In September 1996, cankered dead stems and branches from affected A. frasrei Christmas tree plantations in Avery County, NC, were found bearing the same pathogen. This fungus is known on A. bal-samea (L.) Mill. from northern Minnesota east through Canada to northern New York and Newfoundland (2). Funk (1) reported it from A. lasio-carpa (Hook.) Nutt. in (presumably) British Columbia, but gave no details. This is the first report of it in the eastern United States south of northern New York, a considerable extension of its known range, and the first report of it from A. fraseri. Voucher specimens are in PACMA (Pennsylvania State University Mycologica Herbarium, Mont Alto Campus). References: (1) A. Funk. Can. For. Serv. BC-X-222:142, 1981. (2) E. V. Seeler, Jr. J. Abstract (sommario):
Widespread, ornamentally valuable angiosperm orchids belong to the family Orchidaceae. The Dibrugarh University campus is rich in biodiversity. Therefore, a survey was conducted inside the 500 acres area of the university to know the orchid diversity inside the campus. The campus bears 22 different orchid species belonging to 17 genera. The presence of two rear species like Dendrobium nobile and Vanda bicolour was reported from the campus. The campus provides a habitat for endangered species like Aerides odorata. Dendrobium and Cymbidium are the two dominant genera from the campus. The campus holds 17% of total species found all over the Dibrugarh district and 6% of species found in Assam. The species found inside the campus are economically important as they can be used as medicine, food and ornamentally. Although the university has a healthy environment for orchids still, they need more scientific methods and strategies to be developed for their conservation.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractSex on college campuses has fascinated scholars, reporters, and the public since the advent of coeducational higher education in the middle of the nineteenth century. But the emergence of rape on campus as a public problem is relatively recent. This article reveals the changing social constructions of campus rape as a public problem through a detailed examination of newspaper reporting on this issue as it unfolded at Columbia University and Barnard College between 1955 and 1990. Adapting Joseph R. Gusfield’s classic formulation of public problem construction, we show the ways police and other judicial and law enforcement authorities, feminists, university faculty, student groups, university administrators, and health professionals and institutions have struggled over ownership of how the problem should be defined and described, attribution of responsibility for addressing the problem, and prescriptions for what is to be done. Our findings show how beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the simultaneous swelling of the women’s liberation movement and the exponential integration of women into previously male-dominated institutions of higher education and medicine catalyzed the creation of new kinds of knowledge, institutions, and expertise to address rape and sexual violence more broadly on college campuses. New actors—feminists and health professionals—layered frames of gender and health over those of crime and punishment to fundamentally transform how we understand rape on campus, and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
I decided to study the history of American higher education shortly after May 1, 1968. Early that morning, over a thousand New York City police officers had cleared the Columbia University campus of demonstrators and the occupants of five university buildings. Upwards of 800 were arrested; perhaps the same number of students, faculty, and police needed medical attention. The next afternoon, the leaders of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) gathered on the balcony of the Columbia Law School building, looking at over a thousand demonstrators protesting the police action. The images of the police action initiated by the Columbia administration still haunt me. But so does the triumph of “manipulatory democracy” practiced by SDS members.

Abstract (sommario):
With the acceleration of globalization, universities in East Asia are increasingly under pressure to compete internationally, and ‘internationalization’ of tertiary education in the region has topped the education reform agenda of each government (Mok & James, 2005). In an effort to join the league of world-class universities and attract international students, East Asian universities have expanded the number of English-medium lectures (EMLs) offered as part of their internationalization strategy, and no country has embraced the move more than Korea (Newsweek, February 26, 2007). As of 2010, all the classes at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) are conducted in English only and 93 percent of classes at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), the nation's two best science and engineering universities, with rates of EML averaging around 10 to 30 percent among the top 7 universities in Korea as of the first half of 2008 (Chosun Ilbo, March 10, 2008). Reforms of Korean universities characterized by the introduction of EMLs have been praised by many local as well as top international media such as theNew York Timesand theScience Magazine. Often lost amid the hype, however, are the challenges facing local students in learning complex material in English, a language which most have learned only as a foreign language and to limited levels of proficiency. This article compares opinions expressed in the mainstream media with those from university presses run by student organizations that have been most active in expanding English-medium programs by analyzing articles related to EMLs. The aim of this comparative research is to find out if there are any observable differences in views presented by these two types of print media, in an attempt to shed light on the move to EMLs in this exclusively monolingual country.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1969, Columbia University banned Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) from campus. In 2004, Teachers College’s Warner Burke, a senior professor of psychology and Army officer veteran, saw an opportunity to close this civil–military gap. Burke partnered with West Point to educate West Point cadets’ primary leader developers, its 36 company tactical officers, through hosting them annually in a world-class Master of Social-Organizational Psychology. In 2010, Burke welcomed the Army Fellows program to campus, bringing in one or two senior Army officers a year to study under his mentorship. Since Burke courageously showed the way, Columbia has welcomed ROTC back to campus and now boasts the largest numbers of veteran students in the Ivy League. Most recently, Burke built a third program, this one to educate critical Army leaders who historically did not have access to elite higher education, its noncommissioned officer corps.

Abstract (sommario):
California State University East Bay (CSUEB), opened in 1959 with 300 students on one campus. Since then, it has grown to serve over 14,000 students on three campuses. The motto of our university is “Per Aspera Ad Astra”, or “Through Adversity to the Stars”. This is an apt motto given that our university is the most racially and ethnically diverse campus in the continental United States (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 2014), and 61% of our undergraduate students are the first in their families to earn a college degree (Office of Institutional Research, personal communication, March 9, 2015). Our students are also highly diverse in terms of age, ability status, parenting experience, immigration background, sexual orientation, gender, religion, and much more. Though the diversity of our campus provides ample opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to be exposed to multiple perspectives, we have learned that intentional efforts are required to build an inclusive, accessible, and responsive community. This article describes strategies we have employed over the past five years across three broad areas: (a) support for student learning, engagement, and retention; (b) professional development; and (c) policies around inclusion and access. Preliminary evaluation of these efforts suggests that we have made significant progress in building an inclusive campus that supports student learning, respects all members of the campus community, and facilitates our continuing engagement in this work.

Abstract (sommario):
In this work, we investigate the layout and architecture of campuses in terms of the role of natural landscapes in their space. Campus structures are considered as spatial grids in the context of their interaction with natural landscapes and their components. We studied the experience of designing a botanical garden in Columbia in a hot humid climate, the Polytechnic University in Ben Guerir in the climate of the Western Sahara and the Russian Far Eastern Federal University on Russky Island near Vladivostok. An analysis of the existing layout and development of the campus of the Irkutsk National Research Technical University was carried out. Scientific foundations for arranging interaction between campuses and environmental conditions were determined, referred to as natural conformity principles. Architectural and planning grids are the spatial basis for campus organization. The cells of planning grids are the courtyards of buildings of various purposes, squares and other public spaces. Pedestrian boulevards (malls) connect the cells and the campus as a whole. The natural conformity of the campus depends on the consistency of cells, connections and boundaries of its architectural and spatial structure with the relief, groups and arrays of plantations, as well as with the climate, light and water bodies – landscape spaces. Another important factor is orientation of the building layout to natural attractors, i.e., the most attractive natural landscapes.

Abstract (sommario):
Livability indicators and assessments are critical to promoting campus sustainability and livability. Despite the various indicator frameworks and local initiatives aimed at attaining sustainability, campus livability assessments in the Middle East are scarce. An extensive literature search was used in this paper to obtain the best livability indicators, and the Delphi method was used to reach consensus using a panel of experts in the fields of sustainability and livability. The determining indicators were identified and categorized according to Environmental Quality, Social and Cultural Elements, Accessibility, Amenities and Services, Safety, Housing, and Other Services. A questionnaire using both qualitative and quantitative questions was used, taking into consideration the perceptions of students, faculty, and staff residing at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) campus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A score of 87/100 was obtained in this study, indicating that the AUS can be considered a highly livable campus. Responses showed that social and cultural elements, such as social gatherings, availability of restaurants, and children’s activities, were of utmost importance to the respondents. Additionally, services on campus, accessibility, and quality of housing played a major role in respondents’ choices. The index obtained in this study serves as a reference/benchmark for similar and comparative studies of campus livability, and can be adapted to similar scenarios. Moreover, this study opens the doors for future studies to gain deeper insights into the required steps to evaluate the livability of a campus, in order to facilitate future transformation of a traditional campus into a livable campus.

The purpose of this research was to determine the existence of the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo in increasing the income of the people of East Pentadio Village. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research approach, using interview instruments with various informants. The results using Samuelson's theory about the factors that influence income, show that the existence of the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo is able to increase the income of the people of East Pentadio Village. However, the current existence of the campus has not been fully utilized by the community in increasing the income of the people of East Pentadio Village. There are still many outsiders who take advantage of the opportunity of the existence of the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo by making larger businesses in the campus area so that community businesses that are built simply with little capital experience competition. The low level of education of rural communities makes the business that is built still not optimal and makes the community less creative and innovative in entrepreneurship. This also causes people to easily give up when experiencing losses.

In 2007 the University of Northern British Columbia initiated a two-year elementary teacher education program at the Northwest Campus in Terrace, British Columbia. The program was designed to meet specific community needs in the North that arise from inequities in the cultural safety of Indigenous teachers and students. The authors share three collegial inquiries into the program’s contribution toward improving cultural safety in K-12 schools and meeting social justice challenges in the region’s communities. Culturally safe allocation of space became better understood, affective learning outcomes were recognized as important determinants of cultural safety, and teacher action in classrooms towards cultural safety was scaffolded for various settings.

Instruction is either through a live two-way video link or videotapes. The programme offers substantial benefits to the university, to industry and to the off-campus students themselves. The future for such programmes is a challenging one and will be affected by such factors as the need for universities to diversify away from their traditional functions; the advantages to industry of being able to select the best courses and institutions, irrespective of location; continuing down-sizing of technology-based companies; and the need to serve displaced workers.

Abstract (sommario):
In this work, the flow conditions within the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) urban campus are predicted from wind-induced noise. Wind-induced noise obtained from a collection of spatial distributed microphones are used to estimate the mean velocity airflow and wind noise distribution across the UDC campus. Wind speed and direction are estimated by fitting the second-order statistics of semi-empirical models of wind noise distribution from microphone measurements to analytical models in the least squares sense. The accuracy of the proposed is investigated for average microphone separation and time resolution. Comparisons of the wind speed and direction results to ultrasonic anemometer measurements are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractObjective:Environmental interventions are more effective at changing nutrition behaviour than educational campaigns alone. As part of their health promotion efforts, the University of British Columbia (UBC) developed the Healthy Beverage Initiative (HBI) to ultimately reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) on campus. We describe the development, implementation, preliminary evaluation and future of the HBI.Design:Naturalistic observation of environmental changes to induce behaviour change.Setting:Large urban research university campus.Participants:University community members and campus visitors. Results:Three main activities have been implemented since the initiation of the UBC HBI: renegotiation of the cold beverage agreement, a media campaign to promote tap water consumption and the removal of SSB from select retail locations on campus (residence dining hall). No significant loss of revenue was observed following the removal of SSB from a residence dining hall compared with similar locations. Compensatory purchasing behaviour of SSB was not observed at the closest retail locations where they were still available. After the removal of SSB, ~75% of survey respondents were not aware that the beverages had been removed. Conclusions:The implementation of the HBI has met little resistance from the UBC community. The removal of SSB from residence dining locations did not result in any significant revenue loss or compensatory purchasing behaviour. This suggests that environmental intervention initiatives appear to be a viable option that may reduce SSB consumption on post-secondary campuses.

Abstract (sommario):
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from motor vehicles is a one of major contributing factors to global warming. Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions should involve all parties including universities. In 2017, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has committed to reduce CO2 emissions from its campus upon joining the low-carbon campus initiative. Thus, the current study aims to estimate the baseline of on-campus vehicle CO2 emissions by using mobility analysis of 5,294 entry vehicle data from two main gates (West and East) and 15 parking zones in the campus. Parking volume observations and traffic assignment analysis using the Bureau of Public Roads functions were undertaken to determine the links’ volumes. Subsequently, vehicle CO2 emissions were derived from the estimated vehicle fuel consumption. The results reveal that a total of 1,333.4 kg of CO2 emissions were expelled by on-campus motorised vehicle movements (which were predominantly petrol cars that comprised 80% of the observed vehicle trips). Additionally, the study discovered that the average on-campus vehicle CO2 emission was 12.4 kg per kilometre which far exceeds the European Standard for road traffic CO2 emissions. Thus, to achieve the status of a low-carbon campus, it is imperative for the university management to properly address Sector 3 CO2 emissions from the transportation segment by employing effective strategies and policies to significantly reduce private vehicle dependency among university staff and students.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The Middle East Technical University (METU) Ankara Campus is one of the earliest and most prominent modern-period university campuses that resulted from an architectural competition in the 1960s in Turkey. However, METU Campus, as a modern-era heritage place, faces various threats, including pressure for new urban development. In addition, the increasing number of students and contemporary educational needs require changes in the physical infrastructure and campus settings. Thus, all these threaten the tangible and intangible values of the Campus. In this regard, conserving the METU Campus requires a multidimensional approach that considers a wide range of values and problems; herein, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) becomes a useful tool for dealing with this complex work. Accordingly, the METU Campus GIS Project [METU_GIS] was developed to document and understand the multidimensional characteristics of the METU Campus, assess its values, and propose solutions to current issues while considering its values and potentials. Accordingly, the METU_GIS defines conservation policies and strategies that ensure the conservation and sustainability of the Campus as a living modern heritage place. Furthermore, the METU_GIS is a GIS-based conservation management plan created for a modern period campus for the first time in Turkey. Hence, it became an essential basis and a tool for conserving and managing the METU Campus as a modern living heritage place. All in all, the METU_GIS proves that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are essential tools that can be used in the documentation, conservation, and monitoring of modern heritage places.

Abstract This study highlights the efforts of Indiana University East to make substantive changes to its general education program, resulting primarily from state mandates and legislation, on an extremely aggressive timeline. While fraught with challenges, these legislative mandates also presented opportunities for the institution to make necessary and impactful improvements to its general education curriculum, policies, and procedures that may not have occurred without the looming deadlines and requirements of the legislation. Indiana is one of several states that have enacted and implemented similar legislation, causing curricular and procedural change in general education programs throughout the nation. While often difficult to manage, these legislative measures can be viewed as opportunities at institutions, like Indiana University East, that desperately needed general education reform.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to the generally poor planning of new university campuses in China today, students living in these places normally do not walk as often as they should, and with studies showing the significant impact of walking on physical health and productivity, there is an urgent need to improve university walkability. Walkability is a valuable tool for assessing the level of support for walking in a region, and there are few studies on walkability on university campuses. In this paper, we used a network distance-based Walk Score to evaluate and analyze the walkability of the Zijingang east campus, Zhejiang University. We improved some of the parameters of the Walk Score based on the actual travel characteristics of the students, formed a new calculation method based on a geographic information system (GIS) applicable to the university campus, and evaluated the applicability of this method. The results show that the new method can reflect the actual walking experience and provide a helpful design reference for designers. We also found that optimizing the distribution of facilities is very effective using the feature of the attenuation function.

Abstract (sommario):
The phenomenon of radicalism has become the talk of the world community, one of which is marked by the entry of transnational ideology into Indonesia, this phenomenon has also penetrated universities. Radicalism is often associated with religion, although theoretically it can be related to social, politic, and other similar issues, but in fact radicalism is more prominent associated with religious issues. This phenomenon is interesting to study by exploring the scientific building of Islamic lecturers through a real question such as what is the construction of Islamic lecturers about radicalism and how do they think that radicalism does not flourish. The aim of this study is to explore the construction of Islamic religious lecturers on radicalism and their opinions so that radicalism does not flourish on campus. Research data collection used in-depth interviews with Islamic religious lecturers in East Java. Data analysis was performed with qualitative narratives and through Forum Group Discussions (FGD). The results of the study can be stated as follows, (1) The construction of Islamic lecturers at universities in East Java in general religious-nationalist (2) religious lecturers think that a strict policy is needed from campus leaders by optimizing the role of Islamic religious lecturers because radicalism is always associated with issues religion, so that radicalism does not flourish on campus.

In Canada, there has been little systematic inquiry into the nature and extent of discrimination against university students and the potential impact of discrimination on educational outcomes. On the basis of an examination of domestic and international students at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), York (Toronto), McGill (Montreal), and Dalhousie (Halifax), it is argued that with the exception of employment of Chinese origin and Black students, in general, students experience little discrimination on- and off-campus; that the discrimination confronted by students does not systematically correspond to their minority non-minority status; and that discrimination is of little consequence for grade point average and program satisfaction.

Abstract (sommario):
Urban landscape ecology is a new interest that crosses several disciplines: botany, forestry, horticulture, sociology and land use planning. University forest environs are often the most degraded; foot traffic, development and a shortage of funds for significant tree plantings are main culprits. SFASU lies in the pineywoods region of east Texas and is known as the “university among the pines.” The campus is blessed with many patriarch pines and hardwoods. Computer-assisted drafting (CAP) and Geographic Information Systems(GIS) platforms are being utilized to map the campus vegetation. A 1992 vegetative analysis, when compared to similar studies in 1971 and 1983, indicates a loss in species diversity and frequency with little change in basal area. AutoCad*, LandCadd*, and Studio-3D* are being integrated into a multi-disciplinary project to develop a three-dimensional biotic/abiotic model of the campus. That model will be used as a “fly-through” visualization tool to develop forest conservation strategies most likely to succeed in a sustainable fashion.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This article focuses on the policy development and program implementation of CAMPUS Asia, a policy jointly initiated by the governments of Japan, China, and Korea. It illustrates that internationalization efforts bring opportunities for university practitioners to apply non-traditional types of teaching and learning in Japan, such as experiential, active, and collaborative learning models. The program implementation is a learning process for students as well as teaching and administrating staff. The ‘East Asia Leaders’ program identifies the following indicators for the further development and implementation of meaningful multicultural joint programs: (1) the quality in teaching and coordinating staff in terms of pedagogical understandings, (2) the development of outcome measurement schemes for intercultural learning in the East Asian context, and (3) the examination of differences in pre-knowledge and social/personal expectations of students.
