Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background The United States is experiencing one of the largest and longest measles outbreaks since elimination was declared in 2000 and is at risk of losing this status. Most cases occurring in NYS were reported in undervaccinated communities. Methods We included all confirmed NYS measles cases (excluding NYC) from outbreak counties from October 1, 2018 to July 25, 2019. We used the CSTE measles case definition requiring an acute febrile rash illness and either laboratory confirmation or direct epidemiologic linkage to a lab-confirmed case. For each case, demographic and clinical characteristics were obtained. A medical record review was completed for those reported to have an encounter at a hospital, emergency department, or urgent care center. Results There were 371 cases of measles reported, including 11 internationally imported cases. Most occurred in Rockland county (n = 283); followed by Orange (n = 55), Westchester (n = 18), Sullivan (n = 14) and Greene (n = 1) (Figures 1 and 2). The median age was 5.5 years; 79% of all cases occurred among children younger than 18 years of age (Figure 3). Most cases (79%) had not received any doses of measles vaccine. Of the 371 cases, 263 (71%) were children who had received 0 doses of measles, mumps, rubella vaccine (MMR), 218 (83%) of whom were over 1 year of age (Table 1). There have been no deaths or documented cases of encephalitis. Twenty-eight (8%) patients were diagnosed with pneumonia and 25 (7%) patients were hospitalized. Among 17 hospitalized children, 5 (29%) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) (ages 1 day to 7 years). There were two preterm births at 34 and 25 weeks gestation to women with measles while pregnant. During October 1, 2018–July 31, 2019, providers in outbreak counties vaccinated 72,465 individuals with MMR, a 46% increase from the same period the year prior. Conclusion Unvaccinated children were identified as the largest group affected and experienced severe complications; nearly 30% of hospitalized children were admitted to an ICU. These data support the critical need for continued education and outreach on the risks of measles and the value of vaccination to prevent continued circulation in undervaccinated communities and potential further cases of severe disease. Disclosures Kirsten St. George, MAppSc, PhD, Akonni Biosystems (Other Financial or Material Support), ThermoFisher (Grant/Research Support), Zeptometrix (Other Financial or Material Support, royalty generating collaborative agreement); others, no disclosures reported..

Abstract (sommario):
During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) about 25,000 yr ago, the area of what is now New York State (USA) was almost entirely covered by the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS; Dyke et al. 2002). Subsequent habitation of this area after the melting of the LIS necessitates dispersal of fauna, and the timing of the dispersal of particular species may aid in the understanding of how the modern ecosystems of New York were assembled. Mastodons and mammoths represent the most abundant post-LGM Pleistocene megafauna recovered in New York. However, many of the specimens have not been dated. This paper presents a set of dates from bone and tooth dentine collagen of late Pleistocene mastodon (n = 7) and mammoth (n = 3) specimens housed in the Vertebrate Paleontology Collections at the New York State Museum, Albany, New York, USA.

Abstract (sommario):
A total of 3850 leaf samples from commercial apple orchards located throughout New York State were submitted for analysis during the 1989-1992 seasons. These included 2583 samples from mature, 968 from young bearing age, and 299 from young nonbearing orchards. Percentages of samples (all ages and all varieties combined) found to be below currently recommended levels were: Zn 75%, Cu 74%, B 68%, Ca 63%, K 60%, Mg 60%, Mn 38%, Fe 19%, N 15%, and P 8%. Percentages of samples found to be above currently recommended levels were: N 21%: Zn 16%, Mn 13%, K 6%, B 4%, Mg 2%, Cu <1 %, and P <l %. Major problems consist of shortages of Zn, Cu, B, Ca, K, and Mg in 60% or more of all samples analyzed. Seasonal, varietal, pest management program, and tree age effects were apparent in the results, indicating that these factors must be considered in interpreting results of leaf sample analyses into recommendations for fertilization programs.

Abstract (sommario):
Solanum tuberosum cv. Elmer's Blue is one of a number of heritage potato accessions maintained at Cornell University that exhibit virus-like symptoms of stunting and a leaf yellowing or a mottle mosaic. Testing of this cultivar by double-antibody sandwich (DAS)-ELISA revealed that it was infected with Potato virus S (PVS) but none of the other common potato viruses screened for in North American potato certification programs (3). Mechanical inoculation of sap from potato cv. Elmer's Blue onto Nicotiana debneyii, N. megalosiphon, N. occidentalis, and N. tabacum produced a range of yellowing and mosaic symptoms (symptomless on N. tabacum), indicating the presence of a transmissible agent, but all these hosts tested negative for PVS. To identify possible viruses, reverse transcription (RT)-PCR assays involving generic primers for different groups of viruses were performed on the potato and the Nicotiana spp. Degenerate primers specific to members of the genus Potexvirus (4) amplified a 600-bp region from the symptomatic potato and N. debneyii. Nucleotide sequencing of the RT-PCR amplified product from potato cv. Elmer's Blue (Genbank Accession No. EF609120) and comparisons with GenBank sequences revealed the amplified sequence as having 91% identity with the genomic sequence of Potato aucuba mosaic virus (PAMV; Accession No. S73580). The presence of this virus in potato cv. Elmer's Blue and N. debneyii was confirmed by PAMV-specific antibodies (Agdia, Inc., Elkhart, IN) in a DAS-ELISA format. PAMV is reported to occur worldwide, but uncommonly, with most descriptive work from Europe (2). While this virus has been studied in North America (1,2), these reports employed virus stocks from Europe under experimental conditions or virus in tubers obtained directly from Europe; to our knowledge, there are no unambiguous reports of PAMV in naturally infected North American potato cultivars. By contrast, the PAMV-infected cultivar in this report is a selection originally from a Canadian grower, and although not grown commercially, it is maintained in garden and field plots in New York and other states. Abstract (sommario):
Harlem’s gentrification is the result of a voluntarist set of public policies that profoundly transformed the neighborhood since the 1980s with a marked acceleration since the beginning of the 2000s. The first part of this study highlights the power struggle that led the city to chose this strategy mainly based on economic development. A broad definition of the concept of gentrification allows to grasp the extent and the implications of gentrification on housing, business, public safety and culture. Moreover, this provides a close analysis of the neighborhood that shows the specificities of Harlem’s gentrification process, such as black gentrification. The second part of this study demonstrates the extremely conflictual dimension of gentrification and the problems it raises in terms of democracy and spatial justice. Indeed, the public debate around issues like the expansion of Columbia University or the rezoning of 125th Street shows the deep disagreements existing among players about the vision of the city and its governance. This work analyzes closely the question of displacements that is so central to the debate over gentrification. Finally, this study examines local resistance to gentrification, strongly influenced by the concepts of right to the city and spatial justice

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation looks into the Newburgh, New York affair so as to unfold the existence a strong conservative critique of welfare programs in New York State between 1945 and 1975. It thus purports to write a social and political history of local and grassroots mobilizations against welfare in the liberal Northeast

Abstract (sommario):
Based on the principle that cities are well aware of their own position, this thesis shows how two world cities, Paris and New York, built their physical public space by interacting one with the other. This takes place in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The particular dynamics of this relationship is due to the fact that, first Paris, then New York, is the foremost model of urban modernity. By studying, on both sides, the reciprocal knowledge, the expressions of urban desires, rejections and ambitions as well as urban visions in regards to the other city, this thesis reconstructs a complicated and passionate history. To do this, it analyses texts and images from the professional sphere of architects and engineers as well as from the public sphere and the art world. The history between Paris and New York, thanks to the reversal of one model toward the other, gives a new insight in the more generally cultural aspects that both world cities associate with the modernity of either one. It is a history where the desires and obstacles lead to a far more complexe relationship to modernity itself. Only superficially symmetrical, this relationship is, in fact, profoundly asymmetrical

Abstract (sommario):
My doctoral research concerns the study of Jewish life and culture in Lugo (Italy) thanks to a careful examination of the Register of deaths (Pinqas ha-nifṭarim) Qahal Qadosh Lugo, a source of great importance compiled in Hebrew between 1658 and 1825 and currently stored in the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. The death recordings encompass almost two centuries and contain invaluable information about the history and Rabbis of the community. Of particular interest was the Barocco style of several poems composed in honour of leading people, the accurate description of the funerary culture of the Jews and for the genealogical reconstruction of many important Jewish families, such as Fano, Sinigaglia, Del Vecchio, Jacchia and others. This information has been compared with those present in the contemporary Community registers. The lists of members who participated in the board meetings, in fact, allow us to have a lot of information of great interest about the eminent members of the community and to reconstruct not only the demographic context of the Jewish community but also the evolution and ways of its development. The manuscript also contains the statutes of Ḥevrat Gemilut Ḥasadim (Good Works or Mercy Society) of Jewish community of Lugo. This association handled the burial of each member of the community and its activities specifically consisted in looking after the family members of the dying preparing the body before the burial; organizing the funeral procession and ceremony; cemetery maintenance; assisting mourners; saying ritual prayers; distributing provisions and medicine for sick people. It was instituted on 16 Hešwan 5418, i.e. 23rd October 1657. The text of the statutes shows a very interesting insight of religious and social welfare life of the Jews of Lugo.

Abstract (sommario):
The theme of inequality and its corollaries, such as poverty, insecurity, exclusion or segregation, comes more and more from a perspective of justice and concern at the same time the spatial and environmental issues. As to mark the paroxysm of inequalities, the issue of environmental justice comes revive the debate over access to resources within the social and spatial categories, as well as the debate about the unequal distribution and impact of externalities caused by the use of these resources from an environmental point of view. From New York to Dakar, despite the differences in socio-cultural and economic contexts, the same phenomena of inequality to environmental conditions are observed with some differences in the forms of manifestations and interpretations. This work aims to reflect on the variations that can have these phenomena of environmental injustice in the city of Dakar from an approach developed in American cities, the cradle of the protest movements. This work aims to reflect on the variations that can have these phenomena of environmental injustice in the city of Dakar from an approach developed in American cities, the cradle of the protest movements. Thus, based on the analysis of environmental pollution linked to industrial pollution, it is to show the importance of "contextualization" in the study of environmental injustice in terms of socio-spatial dynamics but also perceptions of the said situations of injustice

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation focuses on the relationship between the artist's masculinity and mass-culture in the context of the 1910s avant-garde. Exiled in New York because of the war, several European artists, experienced an industrial, sexual and social modernity that led them to call into question their own identity as artists. Marcel Dchamp gave his most radical expression to this artistic crisis in a context dominated by the upheaval of the old sexual paradigms and the rise of industrial capitalism. The mechanization of labor, the development of mass- consumerism and the transformations in the condition of women strongly affected the avant-garde of the years and determined various strategies adopted by the artists in order to redefine their masculinity

The text of the statutes shows a very interesting insight of religious and social welfare life of the Jews of Lugo

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn this chapter we aim to explore the role that the linguistic landscape (LL) can play in intercultural telecollaborative exchanges. Although research in the field of LL has gained worldwide interest over the last decade and some studies have analyzed its potential for foreign language learning (Cenoz J, Gorter D, Int Rev Appl Linguist Lang Teach 46(3):267–287, 2008; Gorter D, Cenoz J, Knowledge about language and linguistic landscape. Multilingual Matters, Bristol, 2021; Solmaz O, Przymus S (eds) Linguistic landscapes in English language teaching: a pedagogical guidebook. Available from https://www.llineltproject.com/, 2021), works that analyze its impact for language and culture awareness in telecollaboration are still scarce (Vinagre M, Engaging with difference: integrating the linguistic landscape in virtual exchange. System 105:102750. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.system.2022.102750,2022).In order to explore these issues, we organized an exchange between undergraduate students of English at Autónoma University in Madrid (UAM) and undergraduate students of Spanish at Columbia University. Over the course of two and a half months the students worked together and discussed a series of topics relating to each other’s and their own cultures. As a final task they were required to take photos of shops, posters, announcements, and walls in their respective cities that showed how English was used in Madrid and how Spanish was used in New York. Findings suggest that attending to the LL as an activity within a telecollaborative exchange provides an ideal opportunity for learning about language diversity from an intercultural perspective. The project also provided evidence of its potential for the creation of a dialogic third space in which participants negotiated their cultural identities.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe chapter outlines the cultural background for applying design strategies consistent with the challenge of circularity. The contribution focuses on ecological thinking as an effective design approach to produce and implement eco-innovative strategies able at facing environmental and societal challenges of our global age. Then the chapter depicts the Repair research experience in promoting a systemic design approach for recycling and reusing C&D waste as new, anthropogenic soils in peri-urban areas. According to the EEA Report n.6/2017, the chapter posits that the major environmental challenges of the present are not about single issues, such as waste reduction or soil-loss, rather they involve systemic change and design processes, linking together economy, social habits and technological responses. Therefore, the transition towards more sustainable urban metabolism deeply depends from creative visions by which breaking the circuit “take-make-dispose” and promote new—and somehow tentative—visions for implementing circularity at local and global scale. Further postulation in the paper is about assuming the concept of Anthropocene as theoretical ground for such eco-innovative design approach. The scientific evidence of living in human-dominated ecosystems makes designers towards a paradigm shift concerning the overcoming of the typical artificial/natural dichotomy by exploring the augmented opportunities in designing sustainable and resilient habitats thanks to a more collaborative, plural and innovative design approach: “What is important and significant here is how ecology and landscape architectural design might invent alternative forms of relationships between people, places and cosmos” (Corner, ‘Ecology and Landscape as agents of Creativity’, 1997, reprint in Reed &Lister (2018), Op. Cit., pp. 40–65, p. 42). Starting from these assumptions, the paper deepens the experience of collaborative design for implementing recycle and reuse of C&D waste for producing new technical soils, according to both the regulatory constraints (and potentials) and the site-specific features. The research goal is to provide new vegetated soils by waste thanks to an innovative design process based on both circular economy principles and collaborative knowledge production. Notably, the capacity of producing creative hybridization between biotic and abiotic component seems to be the new frontier in the field of technological design and material engineering. The term hypernatural, proposed by Blaine Brownell and Marc Swackhamer in 2015, introduces the idea of a co-evolutionary process between nature and science, looking at humans’ technological capacity as an effective opportunity for creating the conditions for making biotic ad abiotic systems working together: “The ultimate aim of technology is not antinatural: it is hypernatural” (Brownell & Swackhamer in Hyper-natural. Architecture’s new relationship with nature. Princeton Architectural Press, New York, p. 18, 2015). The chapter deals with the methodology applied for promoting a sort of protocological architecture (Burke, 2007), by which facilitating the C&D waste recycle and reuse within the construction sector, and notably into the landscape project. The research starts working under the H2020-Repair project, and it has developed within further research programs about C&D waste management in urban regeneration programs developed by the Department of Architecture of University of Naples Federico II.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractInternationally there is growing interest in how young children engage with and learn concepts of science and sustainability in their everyday lives. These concepts are often built through nature and outdoor play in young children. Through the dialectical concept of everyday and scientific concept formation (Vygotsky LS, The collected works of L.S. Vygotsky. Problems of general psychology, V.1, (Trans. N Minick). Editor of English Translation, RW Rieber, and AS Carton, New York: Kluwer Academic and Plenum Publishers, 1987), this chapter presents a study of how families transformatively draw attention to STEM and sustainability concepts in the everyday practices of the home. The research followed a focus child (4–5 year old) from four families as they navigated everyday life and talked about the environments in which they live. Australia as a culturally diverse community was reflected in the families, whose heritage originated in Europe, Iran, India, Nepal and Taiwan. The study identified the multiple ways in which families introduce practices and conceptualise imagined futures and revisioning (Payne PG, J HAIA 12:2–12, 2005a). About looking after their environment. It was found that young children appear to develop concepts of STEM, but also build agency in exploration, with many of these explorations taking place in outdoor settings. We conceptualise this as a motive orientation to caring for the environment, named as E-STEM. The study emphasises for education to begin with identifying family practices and children’s explorations, as a key informant for building relevant and locally driven pedagogical practices to support environmental learning.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>This paper presented an evaluation of mechanical properties of ballastless track system using finite element model developed in ABAQUS. CRTS III ballastless track model composed of steel rails, fasteners, perfabricated concrete slabs, intermediate and base layers, was chosen. The track model has a length of 16.8 m in longitudinal direction and the computation was limited to static analysis and linear-elastic material stress- strain relation. In this numerical analysis, steel rails were modeled as beam elements, fasteners were modeled as spring connectors, and prefabricated slabs, intermediate layer as well as base layer were modeled as 3D solid elements. Soil support was represented as elastic foundation throughout the length of the track model. Contact condition between track components was facilitated through surface contact elements having frictionless type. Load model LM-71 suggested by EN 1991-2 was applied to the track model through a load factor (k1) and soil elastic foundation coefficient (ks) varied from 0.01 N/mm³ to 0.06 N/mm³. Initially, patch test analysis to ensure convergence of the numerical solution were conducted, as well as performing simple analysis using one point load acting on the track model to compare the numerical results with the calculation given by Zimmermann and Westergaard methods provided by EN 16432-2 (2017). The numerical results indicated that the axial fastener force and flexural stress steel rail has a linear function with respect to kl, while the deflection of steel rail, flexural stress of frefabricated concrete slab, intermediate layer and base layer is best described by α(ks)βk1 where α and β are constants. As minimum subgrade modulus stiffness required by EN 16432-1 (2017) equal to 60 N/mm², which is equivalent to subgrade modulus reaction ks of 0.0153 N/mm³, load factor k1 equals to 1.28 will yield steel rail deflection of 6 mm, the allowable value suggested by American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
<p>The U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joint in orthotropic steel deck is a part with multiple fatigue cracks. The penetration rate which is the ratio of penetration depth to U-shaped rib thickness has an important influence on fatigue performance of partial joint penetration (PJP) welds. In this study, the influence of penetration rate on the fatigue performance of U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joints was studied. Firstly, the finite element model of U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joints with penetration rate of 65%, 75%, 85% and complete joint penetration (CJP) welds were established. The mechanical characteristics of different welding forms under typical loading conditions were analyzed. It was found that with the increase of penetration rate of PJP welds, the stress concentration at the weld root weakened. Then fatigue tests on specimens with different weld penetration rate were carried out. The fatigue cracks of CJP welds all started at the inner welding toe of the U-shaped rib. However, the fatigue cracks of PJP welds mainly started at the welding root of the unfused weld. Fatigue S-N curves for PJP and CJP were regressed, respectively, it could be found that the fatigue performance of CJP welds was superior to that of PJP welds.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Based on the theory of conservation of potential energy, design of a gravity-balancing spatial articulated manipulator by the use of a proposed spring mechanism is presented. Since the gravitational potential energy of the mass system of a spatial articulated manipulator of n links depends only on the orientation of each link within the system, the entire manipulator can then be considered to be equivalent to an array of n degenerated ground-adjacent links in the aspect of the potential energy. Moreover, since the gravitational potential energy of a rotary link moving in a vertical plane is a trigonometric function and the Scotch york mechanism is also a well-known harmonic motion generator, a new spring mechanism composed of a Scotch york, a compression spring, and a gear pair is used to balance the gravitational potential energy of each degenerated link. With a built-in spring mechanism embedded on each joint of the articulated manipulator, the entire spatial articulated manipulator maintains can be in equilibrium at all configurations, which is verified by the simulation of the system modeled in a commercial software Pro-Engineer. The prototyping of a practical system will be implemented in the near future.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThere is a need for college students to develop global perspectives and gain cultural awareness to become responsible global citizens. Innovative ways to create such experiences are known as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL experiences). COIL is a voluntary partnership between professors in different countries collaborating on jointly-constructed learning experiences to enhance international and intercultural understanding. The purpose of this article is to highlight a successful COIL partnership between students from SUNY Oswego in New York and The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands during the COVID-19 pandemic. 35 students participated in the experience that served as a platform to educate students through a health educator’s unique cultural lens. Benefits from the experiences regarding global outcomes showed that both US students (n=70.6%) and Holland students (n=61.1%) felt that they gained the appropriate skills and knowledge to use in their future careers. 70.6% of US and 61.2% of Holland students reported that the COIL experience introduced them to a new outlook and new ways of thinking about how they relate to the world. The current COVID-19 pandemic has created an opportunity to rethink education pathways and integrate global learning in our classrooms. Keywords: Global learning; COIL; Partnerships, Collaboration

Roberta Gironi Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos, UPV. Via Gramsci, 53. 00100 Roma E-mail: roberta.gironi@gmail.com Keywords (3-5): Informal processes, dynamic transformation, new planning approach, flexible space, self-organization Conference topics and scale: Reading and regenerating the informal city Contemporary cities are affected by transformations that put in discussion the claim of control and stability to which the urban project aspires. All those gradual adjustments are manifested according to the demand, bring toward a less formal and more flexible spatial order, for which the traditional forms of the "static" city become the background of the "kinetic" landscape of informal cities. On the contrary of the formal processes of urban planning, informality process is configured as an organic development model and a flexible dynamic system opened to changes. The informal space is produced according to principles of spontaneity and self-organization. A consideration on the possibility to assume different approaches can be proposed. Those approaches should integrate in the design reasoning all the dynamics usually excluded by the discourse on the urban project, which processes can become catalysts to enrich the methods of planning and design of the urban space. Through the analysis of the case-study Previ Lima and the Living Room at the Border of St. Ysidro, the aim is to delineate in which way the contemporary architecture can absorb and metabolize these processes, triggering a different approach to a different method to intervene in the spaces of relationship among formal and informal. It is believed that the informal urban qualities cannot be eliminated and is impossible to ignore the inhabitants' practices, but rather to work on the intersection between collective and individual actions. Abstract (sommario):
The absorption edges of important light elements (C,N,O) fall in the soft x-ray range. Consequently, with proper choice of the beam energy one can penetrate relatively thick specimens or ionize the core level of an atom on the surface. The recently commissioned soft x-ray undulator at the NSLS is a bright and tuneable source of 200800 eV radiation. Teams from the NSLS, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, IBM, the University of California at San Francisco, and the State University of New York-Stony Brook have been using it to develop several forms of microimaging, including scanning transmission microscopy, scanning photoemission microscopy, holography and diffraction. Coherently illuminated zone plates1 are used to form microprobes for scanning and as a source of spherical reference waves in Fourier transform holography. Three of the instruments have achieved resolutions in the 5070 nm range. Applications in biology include the study of whole cells and organelles, while work in surface science is just beginning to address the important problems of radiation-sensitive heterogeneous materials.

Abstract (sommario):
The main objective of this essay was to contribute to the characterization of the genetic architecture of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on an analysis of a Brazilian series, which is still little studied. To achieve this goal, we verified the proportion of cases of ASD caused by de novo variants in neurodevelopment genes (genes from the SFARI bank and those associated with neurodevelopment described in the DECIPHER bank). Sixty-three trios were evaluated, composed of parents and probands diagnosed with ASD treated at the Human Genome and Stem Cell Studies Center (CEGH-CEL, USP). Genealogy, clinical data, gender, age at the consultation, and parental age were collected. Whole-exome sequencing was performed through a collaboration with Mount Sinai, New York, United States (collaboration with the Autism Sequencing ConsortiumACS). Identification of De novo variants in candidate genes for ASD was performed using the LOVD program (LOVD v.3.0 – Leiden Open Variation Database). It was observed that most of the probands were boys (n = 55, 86%), and the minority had a family history of ASD (n = 4, 6%). It was also found that 40% (n = 25) of individuals had a delay in language development, and a small percentage had comorbidities such as ADHD and epilepsy (n=6, 10% and n=2, 3%, respectively). The mean parental age at the time of pregnancy was close to 30 years for both parents (29.7 and 32.5 for the mother and father, respectively). Nine de novo pathogenic or potentially pathogenic variants were identified in candidate genes: for TEA: six in SFARI genes (four pathogenic variants in NF1, TLK2, DNAH17, BRSK2 genes, and two probably pathogenic variants in ARHGAP5 and HUWE1) and three in genes of neurodevelopment of DECIPHER (Deciphering Developmental Disorders Study, 2015) (two pathogenic variants in the ERLIN2, ST3GAL3 genes and one probably pathogenic in COL11A1). When performing the gene enrichment analysis of genes with pathogenic or potentially pathogenic variants, we observed the enrichment of genes for intracellular protein transport. The clinical picture of individuals with pathogenic or potentially pathogenic variants was expected, as previously described in the literature. This study suggests that de novo variants are also an essential mechanism for the etiology of ASD in Brazil, explaining the genetic architecture of 9.5% of cases.

Abstract (sommario):
Dense urban environments are exposed to the combined effects of rising global temperatures and urban heat islands. This combination is resulting in increasing trends of energy consumption in cities, associated mostly with air conditioning to maintain indoor human comfort conditions. During periods of extreme summer weather, electrical usage usually reaches peak loads, stressing the electrical grid. The purpose of this study is to explore the use of available, high resolution weather data by effectively preparing a building for peak load management. The subject of study is a 14 floor, 620,782 sq ft building located in uptown Manhattan, New York City (40.819257 N, −73.949288 W). To precisely quantify thermal loads of the buildings for the summer conditions; a single building energy model (SBEM), the US Department of Energy EnergyPlus™ was used. The SBEM was driven by a weather file built from weather data of the urbanized weather forecasting model (uWRF), a high resolution weather model coupled to a building energy model. The SBEM configuration and simulations were calibrated with winter actual gas and electricity data using 2010 as the benchmark year. In order to show the building peak load management, demand response techniques and technologies were implemented. The methods used to prepare the building included generator usage during high peak loads and use of a thermal storage system. An ensemble of cases was analyzed using current practice, use of high resolution weather data, and use of building preparation technologies. Results indicated an average summer peak savings of more than 30% with high resolution weather data.

Abstract (sommario):
Invasive zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were first observed in situ at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (APIS) in 2015. This report builds on 2018 SCUBA surveys and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) veliger sampling to: 1) determine whether shoals on APIS borders act as sentinel sites to corroborate veliger drift hypotheses about invasion pathways, 2) evaluate ongoing hand-removal of zebra mussels from easily identified structures, and 3) continue efforts to assess native unionid mussel populations, particularly where zebra mussels are also present. Standard catch per unit effort survey methods by SCUBA teams were used to determine the distribution and relative abundance of zebra or quagga mussels (dreissenids) and native mussels (unionids). Zebra mussels were present at densities between 3 and 42 n/diver/hr (number of mussels per diver per hour), while native unionids were present at densities between 5 and 72 n/diver/hr. Shoal surveys (Eagle Island shoal, Sand Island shoal, York Island shoal, Bear Island shoal, Oak Island shoal, and Gull Island shoal) showed zebra mussels were more abundant on the west side of APIS and absent on the easternmost shoal (Gull Island), corroborating veliger work by the EPA that suggested drift from the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin, is one pathway of invasion. Our results support the use of shallow shoals along the periphery of the park as sentinel sites gauging zebra mussel immigration and population dynamics. Zebra mussel densities in the central islands showed no obvious spatial pattern, and this survey cannot determine whether currents or human transport (or both) are invasion vectors. Given the mussels’ continued presence at heavily used mooring areas and docks where there are no zebra mussels on nearby natural features (e.g., Rocky Island dock, Stockton Island mooring areas), our findings are consistent with multiple invasion pathways (drift from the Twin Ports and anthropogenic sources at mooring areas). SCUBA search and removal of zebra mussels from docks was confirmed to be an effective method for significantly lowering the risk of zebra mussels reproducing and dispersing from these locations. We caution that this work is being done on what look like initial invasions at low densities. Repeated removal of zebra mussels by divers reduced numbers to zero at some sites after one year (South Twin docks, Stockton Island NPS docks, and the Ottawa wreck) or decreased numbers by an order of magnitude (Rocky Island docks). Dreissenid densities were more persistent on the Sevona wreck and longer-term work is required to evaluate removal versus recruitment (local and/or veliger drift). Given the size of the wreck, we have tracked detailed survey maps to guide future efforts. Zebra mussels were again observed attached to native mussels near Stockton Island and South Twin Island. Their continued presence on sensitive native species is of concern. Native unionid mussels were more widely distributed in the park than previously known, with new beds found near Oak and Basswood Islands. The work reported here will form the basis for continued efforts to determine the optimal frequency of zebra mussel removal for effective control, as well as evaluate impacts on native species.
