Abstract (sommario):
Ginling College is the first women’s college founded by the American Christian Church in Nanjing, China, in the early 20th century. The architectural style of the school reflects the orientation of the “Chinese localization” of the Christian Church at that time. It is a representative work of the revival of traditional Chinese architecture. It is known as a “Renaissance of Chinese traditional architecture” and profoundly influenced later generations. Due to its important historical status and artistic value, the Ginling College complex has been designated by the Chinese government as a national key cultural relic protection unit and China’s 20th-century architectural heritage, and the protection scope of the Ginling College historical district has been specially designated for overall protection. Currently, little research has been conducted on this historic area, so the authors undertook this project. This paper adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods for research, starting from the two aspects of architectural art and sustainable design, and analyzes in detail the artistic characteristics of the project, the structural materials obtained locally, and the sustainable design method that utilizes natural lighting and ventilation to explore a modern campus design method based on the concept of sustainable design with a “combination of Chinese and Western architectural art”. Through artistic creation and technological innovation, traditional Chinese revival architecture has realized a harmonious coexistence between man and nature, embodying the design concept of sustainable development, and promoting the development of architecture and the region.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper the authors present the design and software development of an E-learning system based on a multi-agent (MAS) architecture. The multi-agent architecture is established on the client-server model. The MAS architecture is combined with the Dynamic Content Manager (DCM) model of E-learning developed at Bergen University College, Norway. The authors first present the quality requirements of the system before they describe the architectural decisions taken. They then evaluate and discuss the benefits of using a multi-agent architecture. Finally, the MAS architecture is compared with a pure service-oriented architecture (SOA) to observe that a MAS architecture has a lot of the same qualities as this architecture, in addition to some new ones.

Singh, Raja. "Pedagogy for Teaching Fire Safety through Design-Based Immersion of the National Building Code 2016 with Feedback from Students of Undergraduate Architecture". Scientific World Journal 2023 (20 marzo 2023): 1–10. http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2023/4007123.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study is based on the feedback from 3rd-year architectural undergraduate students at a leading architectural education college in India. An undergraduate degree in architecture in India leads to a professional license to practice as an architect in India. Fire safety is also a component of the architectural curriculum, but there are concerns worldwide that architecture colleges may somehow not give the impetus fire safety education may require. A studio-based, immersive pedagogy was created to make fire safety more relevant and easy to grasp for architecture students. This method used integrating the interventions from the country’s fire code into the design using students’ self-created design problems, with which they were familiar. This design-based immersive integration of the National Building Code 2016 and its fire provisions were tested in this study. The detailed course pedagogical structure has been presented. The study was tested using feedback from the students at the end of the semester using an 11-part questionnaire which 32 students answered in an anonymous mode. The results show an overall positive response where the students prefer a design-based integrated fire safety curriculum which introduces fire codes to the students in the applied format. This study paves the way for more replications of the studio design-based integration of fire codes into the curricula of architecture colleges. Further studies will require this technique to undergo further testing by involving practitioners who have undergone this pedagogy and testing the same in building projects.

Armstrong, Christopher Drew. ""Qui Transtulit Sustinet": William Burges, Francis Kimball, and the Architecture of Hartford's Trinity College". Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians 59, n. 2 (1 giugno 2000): 194–215. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/991590.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
William Burges's master plan for Trinity College in Hartford has long been considered more as the product of fantasy than as a serious proposal for the reconstruction of the college campus. Understanding the significance of the project within both Burges's oeuvre and the history of late-nineteenth-century architecture has been hampered further by the absence of any clear relationship between the master plan and the college as it was finally built. In this essay, the reconstruction of Trinity College is considered in the context of contemporary events in Hartford and Burges's design as the product of a crisis in architectural thought that erupted in 1872 after it was decided to rebuild the Connecticut State Capitol. Based on material conserved in the Trinity College archives, the author proposes that Burges's master plan was conceived as a response to the failure of the design competitions for the State Capitol and as a rigorous statement of the architect's vision of an architecture for the nineteenth century. The architecture of Trinity College as built further underlines the desire that the buildings embody the qualities of modernity demanded in connection with the Capitol competitions, and the often remarked similarity between Trinity's "Long Walk" and the contemporary work of H. H. Richardson testifies to the skill of college architect Francis Kimball in merging Burges's proposal with elements of a distinctly American architecture.

Richards, Sylvia Tove-Ann. "Environment supports design : Alvaro Siza and Wellesley College". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/69307.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1993.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 63).
The antecedent of this thesis is a reaction to a history of imposition on architectural solutions and the notion that there are architectural equations or languages that can repeatedly answer design and social issues regardless of time and place. This position does not advocate designing in a vacuum, quite the opposite. As Siza says in the quote on page 34: " ... proposals which refuse to set limits to reality cannot be based in a fixed image nor can they have a linear development." If the focused priority holds on the whole problem at that very moment and place, the result will become a response to some of the much larger questions, and that singular project will be able to use the greater body of knowledge which we all accrue over time, and not vise versa. The intent of this thesis is to explore some of the works of one architect, Alvaro Siza, as an exercise in understanding a process of form-making. The Portuguese architect was chosen for his unique stance in the recent past's and present time's architectural situation, and for the author's continual attraction to his work. The research of Siza's projects becomes a springboard for approaching an investigation into a design project for Wellesley College. A dialogue with the work of Alvaro Siza will supply feedback and examples. Inevitably, the research will have a life within the exploration of the Wellesley project as the movement from one to the other forces better understanding of both.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis defines the discipline of Interior Architecture from an academic perspective, from a professional perspective, and through a series of case studies on various building types. The primary building type, which is studied in this thesis, is the university setting, with specific emphasis placed on the "social spaces" within the university, where people interact and collaboratively engage one another and the environment around them. Interior architecture is explored through a study of numerous design elements and psychological phenomena, including proxemics, control of one's environment, response to technology, location of social spaces, permanence versus flexibility, provision of spatial variety, public versus private realms, and multisensory perceptions of three-dimensional space.

Abstract (sommario):
I will show that architecture can evolve through a design process that relies on a systematic approach rather than an episodic one. I have created a design for an airport museum through the use of an architectural vernacular. The use of this language helps to eliminate random forms and serendipity. Through the use of this vernacular I will be able to rationalize, validate and justify my design.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter explores cases when a design-oriented approach can be harmful, especially if it shifts the attention from refugees’ needs and complex realities toward producing “successful” and “innovative” solutions as determined by the expectations of the field of architecture. To illustrate this point, the author discusses examples from workshops and seminars tackling urban and spatial issues regarding refugees. As a successful model and counterpoint, the chapter demonstrates how a successful process includes the active involvement of refugees and a collaborative approach toward fulfilling their needs. Additionally, the chapter illustrates how a research-oriented approach to architectural design can powerfully raise awareness about the complex spatial realities that refugees face in exile, citing examples from studios and design workshops conducted in refugee camps in Jordan and Berlin. Finally, the chapter underscores the last point, by giving further examples from a seminar taught to students in the Urban Studies program at Vassar College.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter reflects on fifty years of design industry experience working with schools to create better learning environments and community connections. It draws on the work of ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects to explore changes over time with a focus on schools in Victoria, Australia. Starting with the work of co-founder, the late Les Clarke AM on Eltham College in the early 1970s, the chapter traces developments in school as community hub planning and design since that time and concludes with lessons learned about ‘Impacting Tomorrow’ through design that is sustainable socially, environmentally and financially. With a view towards scaling the concept, it is suggested that research-based evidence is needed to establish policies and practices that will enable schools to be developed as community hubs through joined-up approaches that involve enduring partnerships between educators, governments, and communities.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In her study of law schools in the US, sociologist Wendy Leo Moore identifies such academic institutions as hegemonic white spaces. Drawing upon the racist history of the legal system and the legal profession in the US, she shows that law schools are complicit in upholding white supremacist ideologies. In her study, Moore also noted the role that the architecture of law schools played in reproducing racism. In her analysis, she cites classroom seating layouts, symbolism in interior design, and alienating circulation through the building. Scholars of race and space offer powerful theoretical frameworks for understanding space’s role in perpetuating, inflicting, and creating racialized harms. But most do so by considering urban scales of space (e.g. the role of redlining or urban renewal). What is unique about Moore’s study of white spaces is her attention to architectural scales of space. In an effort to deepen this thread of inquiry, in this paper, the authors investigate how members of a university communityexperience white and racist spaces of a predominantly white campus. The authors conducted twenty participant-led go-alongs where participants guide walks through the campus spaces they navigate. Participants reported ways architectural elements such as material, spatial hierarchy, threshold, and framed views perpetuate white supremacy. This research aims to document ways that members of campus communities experience white supremacist architecture. The findings of this project contribute to theorizing ways white supremacy is reproduced at architectural scales of space.

Abstract (sommario):
Practitioners, local leaders and agencies in Texas are working together with the undergraduate architecture students at Prairie View A&M University (Historic Black College and University) through a unique service learning program to explore and propose architectural design solutions for the looming push of climate gentrification in historically segregated neighborhoods. Several projects are on the boards to be built as small footprint, scalable, design-build demonstrations. The student designs showcase sustainable building strategies informed through the U.S. Department of Energy, Race to Zero student competition, building science and sustainable building courses, and research of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Fortified Home construction standards. The integrated design studio, Living Lab for Climate Justice, at the School of Architecture, Prairie View A&M University, is rooted in environmental justice and service learning, as a framework for weaving culture, climate and ecology into long-term housing solutions for post-disaster communities facing sustained environmental injustice in the Gulf Coast.

Abstract (sommario):
Augmenting the grid serves as an investigation into the use of augmented reality technology within early architectural education as means of introducing both historical and contemporary tools of abstract making and seeing. The research culminated in a pre-college two-week intensive design studio structured at an architecture design college for students in the surrounding local high-school communities. The class examined the critical usage of image-based software for its ability to bridge the digital-physical divide within a youth outreach population. The paper explores how the use of entertainment-based image and technological apps, can create new pathways into design education particularly in groups, whom may not have previously been exposed to architectural making, but might have native familiarity with readily accessible smartphone interfaces for camera based environmental capture. The research builds upon the optic history of architectural drawing procedures towards a new form of abstraction and representation using photogrammetry and augmented reality.

Abstract (sommario):
Architecture is a STEAM profession, and a model for education that relies on both the arts and the sciences to address the built environment, community engagement, diversity, and civic leadership. This paper provides a case study for a collaborative pedagogical model that introduces architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design in early design education as part of Rise High School’s, funded after school program for underrepresented minorities. The mission of the Rise High program is to cultivate leadership in the community and an enthusiasm for science. The goal is to enable the next generation of students to attend college and pursue higher paying jobs. Working with experts from industry, and academia, students from Rise High School in Schenectady, New York, participated in an urban design proposal to design a public space in downtown Schenectady. The architecture and design module consisted of three workshops with hands on activities that introduced the students to the role of critical thinking and problem solving as they relate to design and community based leadership. All of the workshops were conducted remotely in the spring of 2021, using a combination of Zoom, Miro, and Tinkercad.

Abstract (sommario):
The teaching and learning of the Architecture and Urbanism college degree course has specific actors that seek constant improvement. This is related to best practices and alignment with society's demands. The architect's responsibility as a designer of the work in its entirety involves aspects of architectural form, structure, processes and construction materials, among others. During the college degreee, the student acquires knowledge of materials through the discipline, theoretical and practical, of Construction Materials. This article aims to present the contribution of the educational practices of this discipline in the Architecture and Urbanism course at UNILASALLE/RJ. As a methodology, a class was accompanied for a semester in which the students got to know and studied the behavior of different materials and developed an Innovation Project that tested, through a prototype, the application of materials researched by the students themselves. Through this practice, the relationship between the educational practice and the formation of skill is verified.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses ways in which a sense of place can be established and community supported through the selective and thoughtful urbanization of suburbia. Historical models of meaningful places and urbanity are described, critical inquiry regarding the contemporary built environment presented, and characteristics of successful and livable urban centers discussed. The appropriate transformation and application of theoretical and urban context strategies in suburban centers is presented through case studies of junior level projects from the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University.

Abstract (sommario):
The first idea of design studio as a conventional pedagogical structure of architectural education dates back to 1819 in France as École des Beaux-Arts. Since then, the design studio has been considered a critical element and norm for architectural education and design practice to improve not only “artistic” but also “analytical- structural thinking skills.” However, since March 2020, when governments enforced COVID-19 quarantine restrictions, the entire education system worldwide rapidly transitioned from face-to-face to online instruction. This global pandemic has created a significant pedagogical shift in delivering the traditional design studio instruction through the virtual classroom. While some programs have previously experimented and found success with online education, for most programs, with direct hands-on experiential learning, this transition was a new experience met with uncertainty and anxiety for both faculty and students. This paper highlights the challenges and opportunities of this rapid online transition in architecture education by exam-ining Howard University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). This institution has a 5-year architecture program that shifted to online instruction in March 2020 and will remain online through Spring 2021. This study explored related literature through a database search in addition to an extensive survey that targeted the design studio faculty and students. Through this survey, the authors evaluated the faculty and students’ experiences as they navigated the traditional design studio in a virtual world. The survey also explored their perspectives regarding the relationship between an online environment, equity, and the digital divide. As has been widely covered, the health effects of COVID-19 have disproportionately affected people of color. Given this reality, the paper also explores how existing ineq¬uities have the potential to affect architecture students in the transition to the digital world. While the paper outlines the challenges that occurred during this shift, it also highlights opportunities for pedagogical changes in design studios at Howard University (and others) should online or hybrid instruction continue in the future.
