Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the phenomenon of private collecting in Soviet Russia. The author proceeds from the fact that the formation of the Soviet system, which led to certain changes in the social structure of society, led to the emergence of a new Soviet elite, not alien to collecting. Restrictions of a political and ideological nature imposed on any form of commercial activity and the almost closed art market predeter-mined the uniqueness of private Soviet collecting: ways of folding collections, the possibility of their preser-vation, exchange, fate, etc. The proposed typology of collectors of the Soviet period depends on the financial possibilities, the goals of collecting art objects, the aesthetic and cultural level, as well as the socio-cultural environment where collecting was carried out. In total, six conditional types of Soviet collectors were identified, among them the scientific and creative intelligentsia, Red Army officers, veterans of the Soviet special services, the state party elite, the “former” - the remaining representatives of the nobility in the country. The historical facts testifying to the complex relationship between private collectors and the Soviet state based on the command and administrative economic system are given. Many archival materials and documents have not revealed yet, which makes it difficult to study some aspects of private collecting of the Soviet era. The study of private collections and methods of collecting is the most important material source for studying the history of the country.

Abstract (sommario):
During the 18th century, collections of coins and medals were familiar sights. The collectors ranged from scholars to amateurs, men and women and the collectables tempted collectors for various reasons: they signified wealth and knowledge, they rendered historical events or current politics in material form, or they were miniature artworks and financial investments. Also, the visual and material culture that involved collecting coins and medals consisted of cabinets and numismatic publications. But how were numismatic collections amassed, and how were they used? What did it mean to own a coin and medal collection? This article discusses the practices of collecting numismatics in 18th-century Sweden through various case studies concerning private and public collections, such as the Uppsala University coin cabinet or the possessions of politician Carl Didric Ehrenpreus, numismatist Elias Brenner, medal artist Arvid Karlsteen, and merchant-wife Anna Johanna Grill. These cases illuminate the diverse motivations behind collecting, from intellectual curiosity to social status. These case studies include immaterial facets such as witty discussions and international networks and material aspects such as coins, medals, cabinets, letters, and publications. Based on contemporary written sources, this article sheds light on how numismatic objects were bought, sold and circulated, highlighting the market dynamics of collecting. Furthermore, the examples examine how numismatic publications were used next to the objects, contributing to hermeneutic study and the collecting process. The written records provide insight into the scholarly discourse surrounding these collections, offering a glimpse into the intellectual context of the time. Finally, the article will add to the understanding of values and ideas attached to the practices of collecting coins and medals in early modern Europe. It elucidates the role of numismatics as a collecting practice, as well as how it shaped cultural perceptions, underscoring the intricate interplay between material and visual culture, society, and the production of knowledge during this period.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the behaviors that revolve around collecting, the motivations behind these behaviors and the psychological benefits collectors receive from engaging in these collecting behaviors. Design/methodology/approach A thorough literature review and integration of prominent psychological and social psychology theories are used to propose a conceptual model, several research propositions and potential research questions for future scholarship. Findings This paper proposes that a collector salient identity and collecting motives drive tension-inducing social and solitary collecting behaviors and that these behaviors in turn reinforce the collector salient identity. Relevant aspects of the collecting phenomenon are explored, and included propositions provide future research direction to validate a proposed conceptual model designed to provide insights into a common consumer behavior. Originality/value This paper provides a broad conceptual model and explores several details of consumer collecting behavior as a basis for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
The article explores various aspects of the practice of collecting works of classical art in Renaissance Venice, as well as its influence on the content program formation of the so-called “Collector’s Portrait”, a typological kind of portraiture common in the art of the 16th century. The most interesting examples of it are the “Portrait of Andrea Odoni” by Lorenzo Lotto and the “Portrait of Jacopo Strada” by Titian, considered in this article. The study is relevant because of its connection with the research attention, outlined in recent decades, to the history of collecting, antique trade and the role of socio-economic factors in the development of art history. The article aims to investigate, on the basis of written sources, the matter of how the content of such paintings reflects the moral and ethical ideas about the meaning of antique collecting, as well as to identify its characteristic features on the Venetian grounds. One of the features was that a significant proportion of the artistic material in private collections was composed of works of Greek-Hellenistic art. The interest in collecting these works speaks about the special aesthetic predilections of collectors, their sensitivity to the actual artistic merits of antiques, and not only about their desire to possess antiquities. In addition, the practice of collecting was intended to express the moral virtues of the collector, the greatness of their spirit and the nobility of their thoughts. On the other hand, it served as an important way of social self-assertion for those who were not part of the exclusive elite of Venetian society (patricians), but sought to approach it in their social ambitions. First of all, the article is of interest to historians, art historians, culturologists, museum specialists and antique trade specialists.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents the findings of a case study designed to understand more about materials, methods and themes of Australian artists’ books and their preservation issues in collections. Artists use a huge diversity of materials and methods in the creation of artists’ books, which might make these books difficult to preserve in a library or gallery collection context. Based on interviews with five prominent Australian book artists, collectors and curators, this paper suggests that artists choose materials that reflect or express the artistic, social, and political themes of their work, as well as the long historical traditions of bookbinding, printmaking, printing, typography etc, that their work continues. However, the interviewees were also very engaged in the issues of collecting, curating, and preserving these materials. The findings of this study confirm that access to archived information about the artist’s themes, intention, and working methods would be invaluable for all aspects of collection management. Thus, there is a need to have a coherent written policies to set rules for what to include or exclude from an artists’ books policy in libraries and art collections in Australia.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the role of merchant, philanthropist, and collector Kozma Soldatenkov in the artistic landscape of Moscow during the 1850s-1890s. The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of Soldatenkov on the formation of museum and exhibition programs in Moscow. By analyzing his art collection and his activities as a collector, we can gain a deeper understanding of his contribution to the cultural landscape of the city. This research is based on a systematic historical approach that allows us to contextualize Soldatenkov's work within the broader context of art collecting and cultural development. The purpose of the article is to determine the contribution that he made to the development of museum and exhibition practices in Moscow, at a time when there was an increased interest not only in domestic art collecting, but also in addressing theoretical and practical challenges of artistic production. The scientific novelty of this study lies in the absence of works in Russian historiography that summarize the achievements of second-half XIX century Moscow collectors in the field of culture, focusing on Soldatenkov's position as one of the first collectors in Moscow's cultural landscape. This research is relevant due to the growing interest in understanding various aspects of collecting history in the XIXth century. Familiarity with the sources allows us to conclude that the Soldatenkov collection had been well-known to the artistic community for a long time, and its owner was not absent from the main events of cultural life. He invested heavily in the creation of public museum spaces in Moscow, and his collection itself served as a reflection of his cultural and social standing. It was a clear indicator of his support for Russian artists and his desire to strengthen the artistic life in the city.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper inquiries into different aspects involved in gathering archaeological materials practices in the contemporary world. Archaeological objects comprise an intricate network of interests such as social, academic, scientific, touristic, historical, territorial, and economic, among others. It is based on those interests that the objects are appropriated and re-signified depending on specific contexts. We introduce two Argentinean cases in order to look into the relations between people and collected objects, and how those relations intertwine with social and political issues. Founded on these cases, we assess the need to create a broad-encompassing framework to study the collecting practices and the great diversity of actors involved.

Abstract (sommario):
A.V. Chayanov was primarily an agrarian economist, but he also possessed encyclopedic interests and knowledge and wrote a series of articles on the history of art, which reflect his peculiar sociology of art. This article is a review of the collection of works which include articles written by this outstanding social thinker. The author considers that Chayanov’s articles on the history of collecting artwork in Moscow and on the history of West-European engraving show the original features of his sociological interdisciplinary analysis. Chayanov studied various aspects of social life — history and economics, art and culture — to identify the historical-social types of collectors of fine artwork, the impact of social crises on the nature of collecting, the problems of elitism and egalitarianism in art, and the directions of people’s cultural development. All of these issues are still relevant to contemporary studies of art.

Karpathakis, George. "Rock stories: The discourse of rocks and rock-collecting". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2008. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/218.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Humanity's relationship with rocks is a long-standing one. Belk (1995, p.2) describes archaeological evidence of early assemblages of rocks found in Cro-Magnon caves that would not be out of place in contemporary rock-collections. Historically, apart from being used as material for tools and buildings. rocks were also used for magical, pharmaceutical and decorative purposes. During the Renaissance and Enlightenment, the practice of collecting rocks became associated with the sense of discovery and the colonial expansion of western European civilization across world, and with advances in mining, science and industry. It is a practice that continues through to the present day. This thesis is an ethnography that asks contemporary rock collectors: why do they collect rocks? How do they collect rocks? And, how do they talk about them? Adapting Foucault's theoretical framework on discourse (1970) and utilising positions on collecting put forward by Baudrillard ( 1994), Belk ( 1995), Benjamin (1999), and others, the thesis analyses interviews and images of rock-collectors and their collections and puts forward a snapshot of the discourse of rocks and rock-collecting as currently practiced. The thesis's theoretical framework is first tested on texts of popular culture on rocks and rock-collecting to locate and identify the statements and discursive formations that make up the discourse, and then it is applied to the interviews of contemporary collectors talking about their collections. While some rock collectors practice alone and their approaches may appear idiosyncratic, others, sharing knowledge and experience, practice in a club environment. The collectors' approaches to rock collecting range from the taxonomic and scientific to the aesthetic and utilitarian, personal and historical, and, for some, to the metaphysical. In Australia some aspects of rock-collecting are allied to prospecting and mining. For some collectors the rocks are souvenirs, and are connected to travel. For other collectors rock-collecting is associated with understandings of nature, time and space. The interviews reveal that in a consumer society rocks are also commodities, with many of the collectors not only acquiring their rocks in the field, but also buying what they cannot find, or trade, for their collection. The analysis of the collectors' interviews demonstrates that the discourse does not stand as an isolated figure, but shares statements and configurations of statements with many other discourses in the field of knowledge, including science, history, archaeology and metaphysics. The interviews also illustrate how discourse and their associated practices are subject to external and internal rules and regulations, imposed by the State, and by institutions of academia and cultural and scientific practices, such as museums and universities. Some collectors aspire to emulate museums, and wish to share with others knowledge about to their collection through exhibition. The variety of themes and practices found in the interviews reinforce Foucault's proposition that within a discourse statements and configurations of statements may arise that are incompatible and form diffractions in the discourse. While apparently incompatible themes, variations and differences exist within the discourse, the analysis of the interviews and the conclusion of the thesis underscore the underlying unities of the discourse of rocks and rock-collecting.

Abstract (sommario):

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Enterprise collective bargaining produces social regulation and controls day to day industrial relations. This work tries therefore to measure the ability of enterprise collective agreements to control decisions taken in their application and the actors rationality. It analyses in which measure an enterprise collective agreement furthers worker's acceptance of management decisions that the agreement have produced. It gives the actors power sources which can be resources or constraints. Part time in insurances sector case shows the ability of enterprise collective agreement to control actor's game. Indeed, as a source of rule creation, enterprise collective bargaining can be considered as "control regulation" with regard to "autonomous regulation" created by interactions between actors in the firm. We have tested the hypothesis by confronting some enterprise collective agreements and internal social figures (134 years). The results of this research allow us to come to the conclusion that the way decisions are taken have an impact on conflictuality. In the same way, the existence of an actor controlling the agreement helps to reach its objectives

A Coleção Amidicis...

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractNowadays, the views of new museology bring changes to museum management in various countries. This concept is deemed to optimize earlier theories and can accommodate the current needs of museums and the society. In Indonesia, new museology is a relatively new theory, although it originated in the 1970s within the international museum sphere. In the past, museums focused on their collections. At the moment, however, they have shifted their orientation to the society. Information dissemination becomes a priority and is related to surrounding social climates. Something similar has also occurred in the aspects of curatorial management. Curators have had to extend focus from only the material aspect of collections to also the meaning behind them.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractSolar energy is one of the most promising sources for low carbon energy production. In particular, PV panels and thermal solar collectors can be easily integrated into new and existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency and sustainability. On the other hand, solar-based technologies require extraction of natural resources and processing, thus materials conservation and recovery are vital to effectively contribute to the decarbonization of the construction sector. The paper is meant to be a brief state of the art that summarizes the relevant issues for achieving the goal of circular economy of buildings with the focus on solar energy application, with the novelty of considering and comparing two technologies, photovoltaic and thermal. Most of the scientific literature was dedicated to PV technologies due to the increasing importance of the electrification process and the usage of materials with reduced availability. Thermal solar collectors were mainly analysed developing LCA without a larger point of view embracing circularity concepts. Apart from the technological matters, the investigation highlights social, behavioral, and economic aspects that can be crucial to trace the route to circular economy.

Abstract (sommario):
The “Russian Collection” of the Folklore Archive of the Estonian Literary Museum (Tartu) contains the field diaries of the collectors – they were the students of the University of Tartu who did their folklore internship in the museum. These diaries are valuable artefacts of the late 1930s which reflect the life of the local population of the Lake Peipsi region, their social and spiritual life before the start of the Soviet occupation of Estonia and the World War II. The article analyzes the content of the collectors’ diary entries in accordance with the common themes and motives: routes and maps; working conditions; life, material aspects of life of the local population; traditional spiritual culture; religious and secular life; weekdays and holidays; portraits and characteristics of informants; notes on local dialects.

Abstract (sommario):
The Introduction offers a comprehensive account of the Breton gwerz or narrative song tradition. It situates the discovery of the tradition in the context of a broader European Romantic revival of interest in popular culture, and introduces readers to the major collectors and collections of gwerziou from the early 19th century to the present day. It discusses the strengths and limitations of the corpus as it has come down us—what types of song may or may not have survived. It also examines the main generic characteristics of the Breton ballad form, comparing them briefly with narrative songs from France and the other Celtic-speaking countries. It then considers the songs’ relationship to history: what events are recorded/remembered in the songs, and how are they presented? The Introduction concludes by considering aspects of performance and the social contexts that have given these songs their cultural meaning and ensured their renewal and survival to the present day.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter considers social history in a post-colonial contest. It specifically examines how the history of the majority culture in a post-settler society has and might be curated. Using Aotearoa New Zealand as its case study, it considers the figure of the Pakeha (non-indigenous) curator in relation to, and also in contrast with, indigenous collections and displays. What does a history curator look like in a post-settler society? Does the history curator continue the mutual asymmetry that has characterised relations and curatorial endeavours? Or is there a way to recognise cross-cultural material histories? In considering the development of history, and specifically social history, it suggests that a more useful concept is material history, rather than historical material cultures studies. The rest of the chapter ranges across a broad range of material history, including fashion and clothing, and design, to consider how contemporary museums deal with everyday life and its material aspects in museums, which are still to a large extent focussed on discrete objects and forms of material culture, and which carry the burden of the historical development of their collections into a post-settler world.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses merchants’ roles in collecting culture during the High Qing period through a study of the salt merchant Wang Qishu and his collection of seals. The Qianlong emperor’s personal interest in collecting and his compilation of a large series of court-sponsored catalogues led to a recognition of collectors in Qing society. Collectors (shoucangjia) emerged as a unique social category, and collecting came to be seen as a valued form of expertise. By locating Wang Qishu’s case in this High Qing context, the author examines how Wang used different elements associated with his seal collection to assert himself as a collector. Wang’s contemporaries also saw him as a collector passionate about seals, as an expert in seal connoisseurship, and as financially capable of amassing a distinguished collection. Through his collection, Wang assumed the role of “collector”—a new social status symbol—and thereby legitimized his position in society.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Let us imagine an institution called the Perfectly Representative Museum (PRM for short). The mission statement of the PRM shows that its main aim is to create a collection that represents as accurately as possible all human products, past and present. As the PRM is unbelievably well funded, it has few practical constraints, merely needing to decide how best to represent the world. The Policy and Planning Committee of the PRM draws up a number of possible routes to a perfectly representative collection. The Collections Management team argue for a single object, which could be researched and documented in infinite detail, research which would, over time, lead out into all aspects of the world, providing a wonderfully rich set of documentary records. The Conservation Department, hoping for new staff and laboratories, is unhappy with this solution, and the PRM’s Director worries whether a single object could ever encourage social inclusiveness or maintain visitor numbers.

Abstract (sommario):
The knowledge-intensive society paradigm fosters relationships between technology and human actors with data, values, and knowledge that become mutual drivers for social innovation. The cultural heritage sector is naturally influenced by this vision, and museums and cultural institutions have a prominent role in dissemination of cultural values. This chapter focuses on a method developed to combine the power of the computer visualization technology with the cultural elements spread across collections, introducing some notes and remarks on how digital replicas of drawings, manuscripts, and museum objects can be successfully employed to spread knowledge. Through a custom application called ISLe, aimed at visualizing 3D models that accurately replicate the original items, some experiences in the production of digital replicas are introduced, highlighting opportunities and criticalities to be considered in the adoption of technology that can be potentially shared and exploited by many possible figures involved in cultural heritage.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter reflects on the nature of curatorial work with early modern English books. It argues that such work evolves in relation to societal changes and our advancing understanding of books. Curators now engage in a multitude of ways with early modern books through a range of activities in collaboration with other library and book trade professionals, researchers, and increasingly the broader public. This work continues to reshape our understanding of collections and contributes to making visible unexplored parts of collections. To overcome increasing constraints, library professionals in the future may wish to strengthen institutional collaboration in all aspects of their work.

Abstract (sommario):
Highly automated vehicles are opening new opportunities for alternative sitting postures, such as the reclined posture, when drivers disengage from conventional driving tasks. This paper presents an experimental setup to assess drivers’ experiences of the reclined sitting posture and the human machine interfaces (HMI) for transitions between upright and reclined modes, and between manual and automated driving modes. The method used to develop the setup consisted of identifying the necessary equipment for developing the experimental setup, defining the preparation and execution of the experimental setup, and collecting and analysing feedback from eight human factors experts. The experimental setup consisted of four steps: practicalities, preparations, execution, and data collection methods. Also, six aspects must be considered when assessing user experiences in a dynamic test: (1) recruiting appropriate participants, (2) providing consistent tasks, (3) providing adequate time constraints, (4) avoiding social influences, (5) utilizing appropriate data collections methods, (6) and carrying out a pilot study.

Abstract (sommario):
The large number of sensors in the field, and the usage of IoT based equipment generate big collections of data, some of them being useful to address maintenance policies, replacement requirements, calibration, research on new data analysis models etc. Both industrial and social systems are increasing in complexity due to new technologies applied to information processing. Recent developments in embedding and integration offered new opportunities to collect, filter, analyse, and interpret huge collections of data generated by large populations of sensor, special devices, or people, and named "Big Data". This work emphasizes on conceptual issues and methodological aspects related to data registration, filtering, smoothing, analysing in order to predict important indicators of the quality of life. The systems reliability engineering field is revisited taking into account both data sources and the new methodologies used for reliability data. Software reliability of applications for smart cities is also addressed. The following frameworks are considered: Systems of Systems (SoS), Big Data, System Operating/Environmental (SOE) data, and Smart cities reliability. The SoS reliability engineering depends on its nature: virtual - based on resource sharing, collaborative - based on agreements, acknowledged - based on collaborative management through a well defined interface, and directed SoS - based on centralized management. The SoS reliability is estimated differently depending on the specific architecture and particular reliability requirements. When the reliability is considered in context Big data, both technologies are considered: batch processing (based on analytics on "data at rest") or stream processing (analytics on "data in motion"). The adequacy of existing reliability models to the Big data reliability concerns, taking into account the 'curse of dimensionality" is considered in the last section.

Abstract (sommario):
The new coronavirus (Covid-19) is one of the main challenges world today has to address. With no large scale availability vaccine yet, and more or less experimental medical treatments for curing the disease, we can safely say that we are still far behind a solution to this problem. This new pandemic is considered the biggest threat to the global economy since the Second World War and there is no aspects of human life have not been affected it, spiritual ones included. Its high contagiousness, as well as novelty, raised all kind of challenges and one of the main ones was our manner to produce answers, in early stages at least, this creating problem on its own and of its design. As well as all the other institutions, theatres, cinemas, concert halls, spaces of socialization and in the same time places of wonder, knowledge and spiritual enrichment the museums were heavily affected by the pandemic crisis, especially those who’s collections are not, but in very small proportion available, to the public through virtual media. Such a case is „Princely Court„ National Museums Ensemble from Targoviste, Dambovita County, Romania. The present paper proposes an overview of the highlights in institution′s activity the past years in comparison with how the pandemic crisis affected its activity in the past months and what were the responses given to keep the museum in the eye of the public. It will also try to summarize how and to what extent the activity went back to „normal” after the emergency state earlier imposed was lifted and how the visitors responded to the new realities.

There are many aspects that influence the importance of a university. Among these, web visibility is taking advantage of available technology, focusing on the benefits of internet and social media. This paper provides an analysis of the Romanian public and private universities websites, using alexa.com, a tool for website traffic analysis. Moreover, the official social media accounts of universities (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr, YouTube and Instagram) were analysed, collecting several data such as: the number of likes and followers, the number of subscribers and the number of posts. The analysis was performed using ANOVA and Nonparametric Test for the presence via websites and Spearman and Pearson correlation to assess the correlation between social media and website traffic. In general, public universities from Romania have more visibility and a higher number of links to their websites compared to private ones. Based on the fact that Facebook and site content are often related, it should be noted that activity on Facebook may improve website rankings for Romanian universities.

Abstract (sommario):
This study implements this concept by using a new roof-mounted PV multi-reflection panel, which not only increases the power output of the PV panel, but most importantly, the aesthetic aspect is a major barrier to large-scale uptake of PV/T. We developed it by considering the production planning of the industrial, expecting our model to determine each optimum production level. This model is based on a mixed binary-continuous linear optimization problem. The flow variables are continuous and the decision variables can be sales and purchases in the markets and gas purchases. We extracted the extra earnings and generate by comparing the situations that interact with the electricity markets and those that do not. In this study, it is aimed to develop an alternative system to the inefficient conventional building energy production and space heating systems, which are widely used in Türkiye, and to ensure that the developed technology has wide usage areas. The reason of rapid development of photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) solar collector technologies, which are not yet known in the world and not used in R&D industrial applications, is to provide solutions to the industrial and social difficulties in the field of energy with Türkiye and İran, which has a close climate, by providing commercial value. In this way, it contributes to the industrial and economic development of both countries by creating new employment opportunities. Thus, private investment in innovative research in the field of solar and other renewable energy systems contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions by the two neighbouring powerful states and to the solution of problems related to energy security, climate change and increased energy consumption. In the study, more heat than heated PV panels using the high thermal conductivity of the fluids, which achieved 14% improvement in electricity production with the withdrawal of Fe2O4 nanofluid. Since the amount of heat absorbed in the thermal system is high, there is an increase in the average 10.4% temperature (∆T) hot fluid temperature compared to the base fluid water was obtained in Fe2O4 nanofluid. For this reason, it is to integrate a power-generating PV panel and a solar thermal heating panel within the same collection surface.

Abstract (sommario):
Communication with older adults and/or people with cognitive impairments could be supported by gathered information about the person’s history or his/her preferences (Rehn, 2015). By using information about the persons preferences and wishes, the sense of belonging and the persons social identity could be strengthened (Turner, 1999). Digital tools addressing this area often consist of static information about the older adult, and they do not consider that we as human beings constantly are changing (Sjölinder et al., 2023). Further, most of these tools have the focus on providing information to the care giving staff instead of being a tool that can be used together and create an experience. In an ongoing project an interactive solution that supports reminiscence and communication with older adults was developed. The solution consists of hardware units in terms of a tablet, interactive devices and a charging station that is combined with a removable tray. The tablet is used for interaction and communication with the system. By using the tablet, general collections of discussion topics can be accessed. The system also has the possibility to gather information and create personal profiles. The information for the personal profiles is gathered by using the tablet to play simple mini games. For example, the older adults can play a mini game where they are presented to items and give these items thumb up or thumb down. Based on the answers a personal profile is built up. The interactive devices are physical devices resembling stones in the size of approximately 15 cm. The devices (“the stones”) have a screen were text or images can be presented. They also have light emitting diodes for conveying different moods and the possibility to play sounds. From the tablet, collections of content can be sent to the stones that presents the items on the screen to provide topics for the conversation. The charging station consists of a part that can be removed (the tray). The aim of this is to make it possible to carry around several stones at the same time. This paper will present a study examining the usage of the solution described above. The study was conducted in collaboration with older adults and staff at a nursing home in Sweden. In one part of the study, the researchers used the solution in the interaction with the older adults. In the other part of the study the staff at the nursing home used the solution in the interaction with the older adults. In both cases two sessions were held with each older adult, one to gather information (playing the mini games), and one session where the gathered content was used in a conversation. After each session with the older adults, questions were asked about the usage of the solution and about aspects related to how they have perceived the solution and the situation. After the sessions that was held between older adults and care giving staff similar questions were given, but in these interviews questions about the care givers perspective were added.ReferencesRehn, A. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Based on economic reasons and safety considerations, Normally Unattended Facilities (NUF) have been proven as a viable option in offshore oil and gas Industry for developing marginal fields. Developments in digitalization and communication are fundamental reasons for this paradigm shift. Digital technologies and robotics have helped operators to considerably lower Person on Board (POB) count on existing attended facilities. This reduced operating expenses (OPEX). Due to minimal operators presence, these facilities require smaller hotel facilities and safety escape devices. These facilities are also designed with walk-to-work as basic maintenance philosophy with supply vessels providing major utilities. This reduces capital expenditures (CAPEX). The associated advantage of these facilities is the reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Due to lower power requirements, most of these new facilities are powered by solar or wind energy. This negates burning fuel gas for power generation. The facilities are designed with one visit per year as basis of operation. Limited supply vessel visits and offshore operators’ trips contributes to GHG reduction. Apart from oil and gas facilities, offshore wind turbines are designed as unattended installations due to limited space availability. Operation and inspection of these installations are carried out remotely. Most of the unattended installations are designed with control from remote locations. Availability of reliable and current data is of paramount importance for remote control. Collecting data from source of truth is a critical activity. Current developments in transducers and smart instrumentation have achieved proven means for operational data collection. However, for maintenance data like deck corrosion, paint condition etc., operators primarily depend upon manual methods. Collection of data required for periodic inspections, like pressure vessel wall thickness or piping erosion, are predominantly manual. Robots can be successfully deployed as data collectors. At present robots are used as aids for operators to carry out risky and dangerous operations. These robots can be either teleported or autonomous robots and require continuous supervision and command. To a limited extent, customized robots are used for data collection in some facilities. This paper highlights some of commercially available robotics applications for offshore installations, discusses cost savings and proposes an integrated approach for robots as data collectors in normally unattended facilities. This paper will also cover some of the aspects to be taken care while designing offshore facility to suit robots’ deployment.

Abstract (sommario):
The Covid-19 pandemic, and measures to contain the spread of the virus, such as border closures, quarantine requirements, mandatory PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests, curfews, and social distancing requirements, have had a significant impact on research methods and approaches. Most of the available literature assumes that remote data collection is the only viable means of collecting primary data during the pandemic, so that is the focus of this report. While there is an extensive discussion of challenges associated with undertaking primary data collection during this time, there are also several commentaries and opinion pieces that highlight the opportunities and positive aspects of remote data collection.

Abstract (sommario):
The Changes in Nature Visitation and the Potential of Mobile Big Data for Visitor Monitoring workshop was held in Helsinki on 28.9.2023. We organized the workshop as part of the five-year MOBICON research project (Mobile Big Data for Understanding People in Nature - Detecting short- and long-term changes and their implications for biodiversity conservation) funded by Kone Foundation. The aim of the workshop was to collect expert opinions related to the changes in the recreational use of nature, the monitoring needs related to the changing visitations, and to discuss the possibilities of various new data sources to meet managerial information needs. Eight experts from different organisations (Metsähallitus, City of Helsinki, Uusimaa Recreation Area Association Uuvi and Suomen Latu r.y.) participated in the event. Prior to the workshop, the participants had answered a survey about their experiences and information needs related to the changing visitations. The discussion progressed from the results of the survey to more in-depth discussions. Below we summarize the key results from the discussions. The recreational use of nature was seen to be changing. Recreational use is increasing and its temporal rhythms are changing. At the same time, the visitor base becomes more diverse because of the general diversification of society and the fact that new user-groups have started to explore nature. Activities and ways of being in nature are also diversifying. Approaching the changes through four megatrends (social, environmental, political and technological changes). The social and environmental drivers of change were seen as the most important. social changes were identified to be related to the ageing of the population and the diversification of nature visitors. Climate change, as an environmental factor, was identified as the most important driver of change, impacting both nature but also human behaviour. Among the political drivers of change, particularly the increasing polarisation of society emerged in the discussion. In addition, political decisions relating to everyone's rights, biodiversity protection and resources directed for the management of recreational areas were seen as important. Technological changes were identified as important and this change taking place as part of the broader technologization of society. On the one hand, this general technologization increases the opportunities for access to and sharing of information. On the other hand, the increased ‘measurement culture’ also affects the amounts of recreational use, as people are aiming to reach their kilometer or step targets. The information needs of organisations were recognized to include 1) planning of management actions, 2) justifying one's own activities for securing funding and 3) informing visitors. Information is needed on visitor flows and their spatial and temporal distribution. In addition, information about the visitors themselves was considered necessary, especially as the visitor base is becoming more diverse. The workshop participants also expressed concern about those who do not visit recreational areas: how get more information about them and the factors that limit nature visits. Collecting visitor data was seen as expensive and time-consuming, which is why finding new kinds of data sources has potential. Mobile data was evaluated as an interesting source of information and its various aspects were discussed through a SWOT analysis. However, it was clear that in operational use, information must be reliable and easily accessible and some doubts were raised on the potential of mobile big data from this aspect. The event was organised by Aina Brias Guinart, Matti Hästbacka, Tatu Leppämäki, Jussi Torkko and Tuuli Toivonen. Johanna Eklund participated in the workshop from maternity leave. More information about the event or research can be found on the project's website or by e-mail to the project's researchers: mobicon-project@helsinki.fi. Saville, Alan, e Caroline Wickham-Jones, a cura di. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Scotland : Scottish Archaeological Research Framework Panel Report. Society for Antiquaries of Scotland, giugno 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.163.

Abstract (sommario):
Why research Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Scotland? Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology sheds light on the first colonisation and subsequent early inhabitation of Scotland. It is a growing and exciting field where increasing Scottish evidence has been given wider significance in the context of European prehistory. It extends over a long period, which saw great changes, including substantial environmental transformations, and the impact of, and societal response to, climate change. The period as a whole provides the foundation for the human occupation of Scotland and is crucial for understanding prehistoric society, both for Scotland and across North-West Europe. Within the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods there are considerable opportunities for pioneering research. Individual projects can still have a substantial impact and there remain opportunities for pioneering discoveries including cemeteries, domestic and other structures, stratified sites, and for exploring the huge evidential potential of water-logged and underwater sites. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology also stimulates and draws upon exciting multi-disciplinary collaborations. Panel Task and Remit The panel remit was to review critically the current state of knowledge and consider promising areas of future research into the earliest prehistory of Scotland. This was undertaken with a view to improved understanding of all aspects of the colonization and inhabitation of the country by peoples practising a wholly hunter-fisher-gatherer way of life prior to the advent of farming. In so doing, it was recognised as particularly important that both environmental data (including vegetation, fauna, sea level, and landscape work) and cultural change during this period be evaluated. The resultant report, outlines the different areas of research in which archaeologists interested in early prehistory work, and highlights the research topics to which they aspire. The report is structured by theme: history of investigation; reconstruction of the environment; the nature of the archaeological record; methodologies for recreating the past; and finally, the lifestyles of past people – the latter representing both a statement of current knowledge and the ultimate aim for archaeologists; the goal of all the former sections. The document is reinforced by material on-line which provides further detail and resources. The Palaeolithic and Mesolithic panel report of ScARF is intended as a resource to be utilised, built upon, and kept updated, hopefully by those it has helped inspire and inform as well as those who follow in their footsteps. Future Research The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarized under four key headings:  Visibility: Due to the considerable length of time over which sites were formed, and the predominant mobility of the population, early prehistoric remains are to be found right across the landscape, although they often survive as ephemeral traces and in low densities. Therefore, all archaeological work should take into account the expectation of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic ScARF Panel Report iv encountering early prehistoric remains. This applies equally to both commercial and research archaeology, and to amateur activity which often makes the initial discovery. This should not be seen as an obstacle, but as a benefit, and not finding such remains should be cause for question. There is no doubt that important evidence of these periods remains unrecognised in private, public, and commercial collections and there is a strong need for backlog evaluation, proper curation and analysis. The inadequate representation of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic information in existing national and local databases must be addressed.  Collaboration: Multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross- sector approaches must be encouraged – site prospection, prediction, recognition, and contextualisation are key areas to this end. Reconstructing past environments and their chronological frameworks, and exploring submerged and buried landscapes offer existing examples of fruitful, cross-disciplinary work. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology has an important place within Quaternary science and the potential for deeply buried remains means that geoarchaeology should have a prominent role.  Innovation: Research-led projects are currently making a substantial impact across all aspects of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology; a funding policy that acknowledges risk and promotes the innovation that these periods demand should be encouraged. The exploration of lesser known areas, work on different types of site, new approaches to artefacts, and the application of novel methodologies should all be promoted when engaging with the challenges of early prehistory.  Tackling the ‘big questions’: Archaeologists should engage with the big questions of earliest prehistory in Scotland, including the colonisation of new land, how lifestyles in past societies were organized, the effects of and the responses to environmental change, and the transitions to new modes of life. This should be done through a holistic view of the available data, encompassing all the complexities of interpretation and developing competing and testable models. Scottish data can be used to address many of the currently topical research topics in archaeology, and will provide a springboard to a better understanding of early prehistoric life in Scotland and beyond.
