Abstract (sommario):
John P. Parker played a prominent role in the Underground Railroad network that operated in southwest Ohio. Additionally, Parker held three known patents and displayed his products at regional/national industrial expositions. Parker’s engineering skills and business acumen, however, have largely been overlooked. A coalition comprised of faculty and students from the University of Cincinnati, members of the John P. Parker Historical Society, and corporate donors formed in 2006 to preserve the industrial legacy of this African American entrepreneur. This project demonstrates some of the benefits and pitfalls of such complicated undertakings.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the article is to highlight the history of opening and ways of development of the Society’s scientific library according to the reporting documents. Research methods: system-structural, analytical-synthetic, comparative. The main results. The library of the Ekaterinoslav Scientific Society has come a long way from project preparation to actual opening and activity. According to the Charter, one of the tasks of the society was to create libraries of scientific and pedagogical publications and publishing activities. Organizational issues included consideration and supporting the project of opening a scientific library and a reading room. According to the reports, the library began its activity in 1907–1908 after moving to the Auditorium of Public Readings (Chechelivka settlement). The library’s funds were based on the remains of the people’s library, which was damaged during the fire of 1905, and the private library of the Sokolov family. The newly established library acted according to the Rules of using books, the content of which is interesting and useful today. A separate area of the scientific center’s activities was working with children’s audiences, namely conducting folk readings for children and and popularizing reading children’s literature. The history of the library is connected with the People’s University named after O. Karavaiev. The society existed until the early 20s of the 20th century. The library was partially transferred to the Palace of Culture of Metallurgists. Some of the books stored in the book collections of Dnipro National University scientific library have seals and are historical sources for the study of local lore and book heritage of Ukraine. Conclusions. The library of the Society played an important role in the processes of formation and development of scientific, educational and library space of the Yekaterinoslav province. The content and replenishment of funds, areas of activity were adjusted by members of the society and met the requirements of time and readers’ demand. Practical meaning. The materials of the article can be useful in the study of historical local lore, domestic library science and scientific and educational potential of the region. Abstract (sommario):
Throughout the historical ages, migration movements have occurred due to different reasons such as wars, internal disturbances, environmental disasters, economic depressions, technological developments, and education. Efficient integration of individuals into society as a result of migration depends on the development of a multicultural perspective. Libraries are among the leading institutions today in terms of recognizing different cultures. Libraries serve everyone in society without any discrimination. In multicultural societies, immigrants can quickly and easily access all kinds of information they need from cultural libraries and information centers so that they can adapt to their new places and get equal service in cultural and social fields. For instance Canada, which is an example of a multicultural society, people who have been in the country were interviewed in the study aiming to evaluate the communication skills of staff working in library services. The data obtained with the semi-structured interview technique were subjected to thematic analysis. As a result of the analysis, a total of seven sub-themes were determined with two themes, ‘Library Services' and ‘Communication Skills'.

Abstract (sommario):
Context.— In the early 20th century, the future of hospital-based clinical pathology practice was uncertain and this situation led to the formation of the American Society for Clinical Pathologists in 1922. Philip Hillkowitz, MD, and Ward Burdick, MD, were its cofounders. No biography of Hillkowitz exists. Objective.— To explore the life, beliefs, and accomplishments of Philip Hillkowitz. Design.— Available primary and secondary historical sources were reviewed. Results.— Hillkowitz, the son of a Russian rabbi, immigrated to America as an 11-year-old child in 1885. He later attended medical school in Cincinnati, Ohio, and then moved to Colorado, where he began his clinical practice, which transitioned into a clinical pathology practice. In Denver, he met Charles Spivak, MD, another Jewish immigrant and together they established the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society, an ethnically sensitive tuberculosis sanatorium that flourished in the first half of the 20th century because of its national fundraising network. In 1921, Hillkowitz and Burdick, also a Denver-based pathologist, successively organized the pathologists in Denver, followed by the state of Colorado. Early the next year, they formed the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Working with the American College of Surgeons, the ASCP put hospital-based practice of clinical pathology on solid footing in the 1920s. Hillkowitz then established and oversaw the ASCP Board of Registry of Medical Technologists. Conclusions.— Philip Hillkowitz changed the directions of clinical pathology and tuberculosis treatment in 20th century America, while simultaneously serving as a successful ethnic power broker within both the American Jewish and Eastern European immigrant communities.

Abstract (sommario):
The article has as its object the elucidation of the history of the Vyshnivetsky Castle Library, definition of the content of its fund, its historical and cultural significance, correlation of the founder of the Library Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky with the Book. The Vyshnivetsky Castle Library was formed in the Ukrainian historical region of Volyn’, in the Vyshnivets town – “family nest” of the old Ukrainian noble family of the Vyshnivetskies under the “Korybut” coat of arm. The founder of the Library was Prince Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky (1680–1744) – Grand Hetman and Grand Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilno Voievoda. He was a politician, an erudite and great bibliophile. In the 30th–40th of the 18th century the main Prince’s residence Vyshnivets became an important centre of magnate’s culture in Rich Pospolyta. M. S. Vyshnivetsky’s contemporaries from the noble class and clergy knew quite well about his library and really appreciated it. According to historical documents 5 periods are defined in the Library’s history. In the historical sources the first place is occupied by old-printed books of Library collection and 7 Library manuscript catalogues dating from 1745 up to the 1835 which give information about quantity and topical structures of Library collection. The Library is a historical and cultural symbol of the Enlightenment epoch. The Enlightenment and those particular concepts and cultural images pertaining to that epoch had their effect on the formation of Library’s fund. Its main features are as follow: comprehensive nature of the stock, predominance of French eighteenth century editions, presence of academic books and editions on orientalistics as well as works of the ideologues of the Enlightenment and new kinds of literature, which generated as a result of this movement – encyclopaedias, encyclopaedian dictionaries, almanacs, etc. Besides the universal nature of its stock books on history, social and political thought, fiction were dominating. The reconstruction of the history of Vyshnivetsky’s Library, the historical analysis of the provenances in its editions give us better understanding of the personality of its owners and in some cases their philanthropic activities, and a better ability to identify the role of this Library in the culture life of society in a certain epoch.

Buccal odors have always been a factor of concern for society. This study aims to investigate the historical and social base of halitosis, through systematized research in the database BVS (biblioteca virtual em saúde - virtual library in health) and also in books. Lack of knowledge on how to prevent halitosis allows for its occurrence, limiting quality of life. As social relationships are one of the pillars of the quality of life concept, halitosis needs to be considered a factor of negative interference. Education in health should be accomplished with a view to a dynamic balance, involving human beings' physical and psychological aspects, as well as their social interactions, so that individuals do not become jigsaw puzzles of sick parts.

Abstract (sommario):
The article explores the image of the Otrar library – one of the most famous places of historical memory of the Kazakh society. We traced the genealogy of this image and its reflection in 4 identified narratives of historical memory: academic (scientific), media (public history, fiction, media), folklore and official (state). The reasons for the popularity of this image, starting from the second half of the twentieth century, and the role of the scientific and creative intelligentsia in the reinvention of the historical subjectivity of the Kazakhs in the process of Soviet nation-building and the anti-religious campaign of 1958-1964, when in order to preserve the cultural heritage of medieval monuments of Central Asia within the framework of the concept autochthonism and “the struggle for progressive folk traditions”, local elites intensified archaeological research, reception and development of this heritage, derived from the classification of “religious” to the definition of “folk”. During this period, the image of medieval urban culture begins to form as a chronotope of the golden age in the historical memory of Kazakhstan society. It is there that the Great Silk Road is located, a developed urban culture, the great and tragic pages of Otrar, the Second Teacher of the world - Al-Farabi, the actualization of whose biography largely revived interest in Otrar and influenced the emergence of the image of the Otrar library in the historical memory. There, urbanization ceases to be a modern problem and becomes a cultural heritage. Within the framework of the article, the mechanisms of formation and overcoming of the cultural trauma of "non-historicity" of the sedentarized nomadic culture by the Kazakh national intelligentsia of the 1950s-1960s were studied. The Otrar library, as a place of historical memory, plays the role of the argument of the “lost enlightenment” in these narratives.

Abstract (sommario):
Although science has been a formidably successful force of social and technological development in the modern era, and a main reason for the wealth and well-being of current societies compared to previous times, a fundamental distrust characterizes its current status in society. According to prevalent discourse, science is insufficiently productive and in need of stricter governance and bureaucratic management, with performance evaluation by the means of quantitative metrics as a key tool to increase efficiency. The basis of this notion appears to be a belief that the key or only purpose of science is to drive economic growth, or sustainable development in combination with economic growth. In this article, these beliefs are analyzed and deconstructed with the help of a theoretical toolbox from the classic sociology of science and recent conceptualizations of economization, democratization, and commodification of scientific knowledge and the institution of science, connecting these beliefs to broader themes of market fundamentalism and to the metric fixation of current society. With the help of a historical-sociological analysis, this article shows that the current ubiquity of performance evaluation in science for the most part is pointless and counterproductive, and that this state of science policy is in dire need of reevaluation in order to secure science’s continued productivity and contribution to social and technological innovation.

Abstract (sommario):
Essential premises and problems of the Library and Information Science (LIS) paradigms’ shift (uncertainty of scientific boundaries and fragmentation; various historical, sociological and organizational conditions) are analyzed on the case of Vilnius University. Since 1949 Lithuanian university studies and research in the field of LIS had experienced few changes (periods of paradigm shift), that essentially had been preconditioned by general LIS and society’s development tendencies. The case of Vilnius University allows us detect humanitarian, sociological, informational and communicational paradigms. Their formation takes the background in the epistemological relations of LIS to the other sciences and in the necessity to solve practical problems of libraries as well as other information institutions. One of the major challenges that LIS has to face is the requirement to research complicated questions: information services to the society in general as well as individuals; information needs; work of information institutions. Multidimensional problems of LIS field require interdisciplinary view as well as methodological and theoretical transformations. Constant interaction of LIS with other science fosters interdisciplinary research fields and threatens the integrity of LIS on theoretical and methodological levels. Instability of LIS status displays itself not only in theoretical, but also in organizational aspects. Uncertain limits of LIS and tight relations with other sciences enforce dissociation or integration of academic units, while extensive amount of research tasks in LIS field is hardly being performed due to the lack of personnel.

Abstract (sommario):
Study of the history of particular libraries is the important trend of modern domestic and foreign research works, since it contributes to the solution of not only scientific, but also local history and education tasks. Due to the lack of complex research studies on the history of library of the “Society for Mutual Assistance of Salesmen in Tomsk”, this article for the first time considers in detail the activities of library for all twenty years — from its establishment to closure. The purpose of the article is to reconstruct the history of the Society’s library, including its structure, collections, functioning and future destiny. The author collected the data from a wide range of historical sources: the Charter and reports of the Society for the entire period of its existence, anniversary historical essays summarizing the results of 10—20 years of its activity, the printed catalogue of the library, the pre-revolutionary magazine “Bibliotekar” [Librarian]. Information contained in one of them is confirmed directly or indirectly in the other. All this makes it possible to characterize the source base as sufficiently complete and representative. The principles of historicism, objectivity and consistency formed the methodological basis of the research. The article uses the methods of comparative analysis, statistical, chronological and source studies. The article reveals the dependence of the amount of allocations for the library on the financing of other activities of the Society. For the first time, the author compiled the rating of writers among the library’s users, which was headed by both classic writers and authors who are almost forgotten today. The article reconstructs the repertoire of periodicals that were available in the collections. The obtained results reveal the close interrelation and interdependence of all indicators of the library’s activity, including the time of its operation, the amount of financing, the number of users, visits, titles of books and periodicals. This study expands the idea of public initiative in the arrangement of libraries in pre-revolutionary Siberia, the demand for these cultural institutions among the lower strata of Siberian society and their reader’s preferences.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to one of the most debatable topics of library science — the problem of social functions of library. Domestic researchers in the area of library science repeatedly addressed the question on the mission of library and considered its role in the society. The author notes that the term “social function” occupies an important place in the conceptual apparatus of library science; however, the generally accepted classification of social functions has not been developed to date. The author traces the history of formation of the ideas about the social functions of library. The article examines the main theoretical approaches and directions of research of social functions related to their classification, definition of functions of different types of libraries, search for the essential (generic) function, etc. The author emphasizes that, in the course of evolution of library science, the ideas of library scientists on the composition and content of social functions of library had been changing, and the choice of particular function as the dominant one depended on the specific historical conditions. The article notes that in the modern library science there is a tendency to expand the vision of social functions of library. The author believes that this trend will continue in the future, and this is a naturally determined process. To the traditional functions of library — information, cultural, educational — added the function of social protection. The most striking model of the modern public library, implementing this function, embodied in the concept of “third place”, according to which the library positions itself as part of the urban space, a comfortable area for self-development, informal communication and social adaptation. For people with special needs (disabled, unemployed, homeless) library often becomes a “lifeline”, giving the opportunity to find their place in society. The expansion of the range of activities of libraries through the development of additional social functions does not detract from the importance of library-information services as a leading area of work. How justified are the attempts of libraries to “fit” into the life of modern society, to attract attention, to become necessary, can be judged only in the course of time.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this research is to find out the historical approach in Islamic studies. The research method used is a qualitative method with the type of library research or library research, namely sourced from the works of the library, whether in the form of scientific articles, books, and so on. Of course, this research is expected as education and literacy for readers. Remembering this historical approach is very important in understanding religion, because religion itself descends from concrete situations and is related to social conditions. With this approach we will be shown the actual state of an event. Someone who wants to study a deeper understanding of the Qur'an or the events that accompanied the revelation of the Qur'an needs to be equipped with a historical approach to Islamic studies. The purpose of using the historical approach is to reconstruct past events objectively and systematically, by collecting, verifying, evaluating, and synthesizing evidence to explain the facts so that strong conclusions can be obtained. The results of this literature review show that, the large number of Muslims who only know Islamic texts but do not know how it relates to history and life in society indicates the need for an approach and methodology that explores the relationship between texts and human experience and culture through a historical approach. By taking a historical approach, a reviewer will be shown the actual situation regarding an event related to Islamic studies.

Abstract (sommario):
Finnish library services for children and young adults are an integral part of Finnish society, education and societal life. The article highlights the historical development and present day of Finnish library system as well as describes the best practices on the activities libraries provide for young clientele and their caretakers. After World War II, Finland started a rapid rise towards being a modern nation. Reading as a pastime hobby gained popularity, there were more education possibilities, the level of education was on the rise and young people spent more years in school instead of starting to work early. All this had a positive effect on library services. The changes in education and society had their effect on children’s library services as well, and today children’s and youth libraries are an essential part of Finnish society.Unlike in many other countries, Finland does not have school libraries in every school. At the moment, there are some excellent school libraries and dedicated school librarians but majority of schools are served with public libraries. The line between school library and public library is blurred, as majority of visits may be of pupils but the connection between high quality education and well-functioning library service has enabled libraries and schools to develop common goals, objectives and strategies.

Research into education for librarianship has failed to explore the historical development of the subject or to establish the social and cultural contexts within which it developed. Such historical background and context are essential for exploring and understanding issues of race and of systemic and institutionalized racism. Historical methodology, coupled with the revisionist history of Critical Race Theory, asks how the social/institutional structures of white society determined the construction of librarianship and education for librarianship in the African-American community, explores issues of whiteness and white privilege, and investigates how this influenced African Americans’ perception of the profession and their place and role in it. It addresses intersectionality and essentialism and seeks to understand the thoughts and feelings of the African Americans involved in the process who were disregarded and ignored.

This paper is an attempt to discuss Islamization of economics in historical perspective. Focus of the discussion is not only the Islamization of economics but also realization of an Islamic economic system. This research is based on library research methods and supported by historical analysis. Conclusive information was collected from various studies and analysed for the conception of implementing methodological steps to realize the Islamization of the economic system. Studies were reviewed and investigated in three stages: general, exploratory, and focused learning. The findings of this study reveal that Islamization of economics cannot stand alone without the Islamization of every Muslim and the Islamization of society. Like Islamization of a society is realized with organization of Muslim families, Islamization of economics can be realized by increasing the number of economists who have knowledge of sharia.

Abstract (sommario):
Indonesian reenactors imitate the characteristics of the troops during the independence war. It becomes a euphoric event in commemorating the battles and history learning activity. The activity itself is perceived as the source of history learning when it is creatively crafted to be a media content and uploaded in social media. It is a kind of excavation towards the history of independence war from the alternative perspective, which has never been disclosed before. The reenactors narrate the perspective of the history of Indonesia independence war as, what is interpreted in this writing, the articulation of hegemony counter. It becomes an example of the operationalization theory of Cox and Schilthuis inspired by Antonio Gramsci. It is a kind of expression of resistance towards the State system and politics from the intellectual concept. Resistance using the history education as the subject becomes a kind of hegemony counter done by society groups which are not included in marginalized society. This paper uses the method of library research, observation and visual analysis interview using the Barthesian semiology perspective.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper locates the discussion around the finalization thesis in a broader science policy context, linking it to the recent discourse on a changing science-society contract. It is argued that the broadening of the Kuhnian concept of the paradigm, making it amenable to science policy studies, was an important move. Further development of this notion, however, standed on the prongs of critique coming from both the worlds of politics and science. At the same time, advances in the cognitive sociology of science undermined the internalist/externalist distinction. Today, with certain changes in the conditions of research due to the introduction of the concept of “strategic research”, politicians are more apt to accept certain points of the thesis; scientific communities, on the other hand, perceive new threats to their autonomy. This paper tries to make sense of this new situation by translating the question of interplay between internal and external dynamics of research into one involving boundary management and epistemic criteria. The notion of “epistemic drift” is introduced and the internalist/externalist distinction refurbished in neo-institutionalist terms, making use of the concept of interfoliating credibility cycles.
