John P. Parker played a prominent role in the Underground Railroad network that operated in southwest Ohio. Additionally, Parker held three known patents and displayed his products at regional/national industrial expositions. Parker’s engineering skills and business acumen, however, have largely been overlooked. A coalition comprised of faculty and students from the University of Cincinnati, members of the John P. Parker Historical Society, and corporate donors formed in 2006 to preserve the industrial legacy of this African American entrepreneur. This project demonstrates some of the benefits and pitfalls of such complicated undertakings.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the article is to highlight the history of opening and ways of development of the Society’s scientific library according to the reporting documents. Research methods: system-structural, analytical-synthetic, comparative. The main results. The library of the Ekaterinoslav Scientific Society has come a long way from project preparation to actual opening and activity. According to the Charter, one of the tasks of the society was to create libraries of scientific and pedagogical publications and publishing activities. Organizational issues included consideration and supporting the project of opening a scientific library and a reading room. According to the reports, the library began its activity in 1907–1908 after moving to the Auditorium of Public Readings (Chechelivka settlement). The library’s funds were based on the remains of the people’s library, which was damaged during the fire of 1905, and the private library of the Sokolov family. The newly established library acted according to the Rules of using books, the content of which is interesting and useful today. A separate area of the scientific center’s activities was working with children’s audiences, namely conducting folk readings for children and and popularizing reading children’s literature. The history of the library is connected with the People’s University named after O. Karavaiev. The society existed until the early 20s of the 20th century. The library was partially transferred to the Palace of Culture of Metallurgists. Some of the books stored in the book collections of Dnipro National University scientific library have seals and are historical sources for the study of local lore and book heritage of Ukraine. Conclusions. The library of the Society played an important role in the processes of formation and development of scientific, educational and library space of the Yekaterinoslav province. The content and replenishment of funds, areas of activity were adjusted by members of the society and met the requirements of time and readers’ demand. Practical meaning. The materials of the article can be useful in the study of historical local lore, domestic library science and scientific and educational potential of the region. The scientific novelty lies in the holistic study of library activity of the Scientific Society as an important center in the formation of science in the province. Type of article: analytical.

Abstract (sommario):
Throughout the historical ages, migration movements have occurred due to different reasons such as wars, internal disturbances, environmental disasters, economic depressions, technological developments, and education. Efficient integration of individuals into society as a result of migration depends on the development of a multicultural perspective. Libraries are among the leading institutions today in terms of recognizing different cultures. Libraries serve everyone in society without any discrimination. In multicultural societies, immigrants can quickly and easily access all kinds of information they need from cultural libraries and information centers so that they can adapt to their new places and get equal service in cultural and social fields. For instance Canada, which is an example of a multicultural society, people who have been in the country were interviewed in the study aiming to evaluate the communication skills of staff working in library services. The data obtained with the semi-structured interview technique were subjected to thematic analysis. As a result of the analysis, a total of seven sub-themes were determined with two themes, ‘Library Services' and ‘Communication Skills'.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractBetween 1933 and 1945, almost 300,000 people were murdered and 360,000 sterilized by the National Socialist (Nazi) regime under a group of crimes now collectively known as the Krankenmorde, the murder of the sick and disabled. Founded in narrow-minded and inconsistent accounts of a good and valuable life, the Nazi eugenic and “euthanasia” crimes were brutal and violent acts organized and executed by doctors, nurses and other professionals. Acknowledgement of this group of victims was delayed and obscured due to historical events as well as prevailing political and social attitudes toward mental illness and disability. As a result, the breadth of the Krankemorde crimes and its victims, its relationship to the Holocaust and its contemporary significance–to bioethics and society more broadly–is less recognized or understood than that of other Nazi medical crimes, such as the infamous experiments on prisoners. First presenting a history of the Krankenmorde and its aftermath in Germany and Nazi occupied territories, this chapter goes on to examine the value of bioethics having better knowledge of this part of its history and, in particular, engaging with its own epistemic constraints in relation to disability and ableism. These ideas are explored further in the context of contemporary bioethical issues related to the rights and treatment of people with disabilities, specifically the allocation of health resources. Throughout the chapter we seek to highlight the lives of Krankenmorde victims–those who survived and those who did not–all of whom have been historically overlooked and marginalized.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractMy chapter, based on archival materials consulted at the British Library, is a discussion of the historical evolution of migration in the UAE, and in particular in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. A social transformation perspective entails treating migration as embedded in the broad understanding of society and its changes. Migration is neither a cause nor a consequence of social transformation but is part of transformation processes. This paper demonstrates that the historical evolution of migration in the emirates can only be understood by linking local-level experience of migration with other socio-spatial levels thus contributing to a better understanding of contemporary dynamics where migration, globalisation, economic and political aspects are intertwined.

Abstract (sommario):
The article raises issues related to the creation of an innovative climate as an important prerequisite for managing innovations in the library. The processes taking place in modern society make librarians constantly search for new ideas, forms, tools and methods of work, management actions, and analysis of their activities. The specificity of innovations is that they always contain a new solution relevant to an urgent problem and allow getting results that have innovative content.Innovation in librarianship is the creation of fundamentally new patterns of activity that go beyond unregulated norms and bring professional activity to a fundamentally new qualitative level.

Abstract A study of the collection of manuscripts deposited in the National Library of Scotland by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1987, especially the undated ‘An Historical Essay on Chivalry and modern Honour’, the so-called ‘early memoranda’, and the Dialogues. Argues that the ‘Essay on Chivalry’ was probably written in 1731, and that the ‘memoranda’ are conterminous with the end of Hume’s work on the Treatise. Regarding the Dialogues, identifies the stages of the text’s composition, particularly Parts 3 and 12. Argues that the manuscript shows that Hume was at work on revisions in the late 1750s as well as in the 1760s, and that the amount of revision done in 1776 has been greatly exaggerated by other commentators.

Hebrew incunabula from the collection of the National Library of Israel contain a vast amount of manuscript annotations, many of them of historical, philological, linguistic, and palaeographical interest. The paper presents a few examples of owners’ notes that shed light on the history of books in early modern Jewish communities. From the book owned by the well-known rabbi Moses Alashkar, to a reference to the participation of rabbi Mordecai Dato in a family ceremony, and the extensive glosses of Samuel Lerma, to the joyful message of an unnamed Jew whose daughter had been released from captivity. Such material is a valuable resource for research on the distribution and use of early Hebrew printed books in Europe and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
The information, containing the entire world experience of mankind and serving as historical memory of the nation and the basis for further economic and spiritual progress of society, is stored in libraries. The preservation for future generations of this invaluable information and its carriers – the books that make up the library funds, has become a global task that all civilized countries of the world are solving. In order to preserve the Jewish cultural documentary heritage in the Library named after I. Manger, the department “Rare Book” has been functioning since 2000. Its fund has more than 1500 copies of documents. The collection in Hebrew includes mainly religious books published in the XIX and early XX centuries. The rarest of them are 2 Torah scrolls, volumes of the Babylonian Talmud, published in 1848–1880 in Lemberg, the edition of the Torah (Pentateuch of Moses), dated 1874; Books of the Prophets 1904 and 1914 editions, Zohar 1910, Haggadah. The collection of these rare and valuable books was formed partly through acquisitions in Bukinist bookshops, but the main part was received as a gift from residents of Chisinau and Moldova. Libraries are firstly designed to perform a dual function: to store documents published and written in the past and to provide access to them for present and future generations.
