Abstract (sommario):
Any inquiry into the condition of the churches to-day must consider the gulf existing between the church and the working class. We hardly realize, I think, that by a great section of the proletariat our religious organizations are regraded as the stronghold of hypocrisy and oppression. We hardly realize the bitterness that that these workers fell toward us as they repeat once again: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers. Therefore, shall ye receive the greater damnation.”

Abstract (sommario):
From professional pundits to casual observers, there are deep concerns about the state of American society and profound doubts about its future. Political cynicism is ascendant--and yet, the desire for politicians to “do something” remains. What role can public policy have in addressing the largest social problems and their causes? And beyond public policy, what are the potentially effective means in terms of social institutions, including the Church? Although public policy offers some promise, its usefulness is generally exaggerated. Its costs are typically subtle and often ignored. Knowledge of consequences and tradeoffs is insufficient, and the motives of political agents are less than pure. And many dilemmas, by their nature, cannot be ably addressed by politics and policy. In contrast, a resurgence in civil society--particularly the Church--holds more promise. Even in a time of potential “exile,” the Church is called to pursue the holistic welfare of society and enhance the common good.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to critique and evaluate the church's functionality, namely the church in its social function. The Toraja Church is still not here to carry out its real social function. As a result, various kinds of social injustice that are produced from culture settle right within the sphere of the church. The church exists only as a producer of the imagination: directing the imagination, without fixing problems on earth. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature observation approach. As a basis, the theory used in this research is Karl Marx's socio-religious criticism theory. The essence of this criticism is not rejection of religion, but rejection of religious practices which merely produce illusions, so as not to solve the problems experienced by society, especially Christians, as a result, society becomes alienated. The Toraja Church is required not to solve problems through imagined solutions, but instead to bring concrete liberating solutions in society. The church should be a real medicine where there is a sick soul due to the chaos of the world. With the revival of church functionality, the church has become a strong fortress for the community towards peace.

Abstract (sommario):
Catholic social action or State social intervention? The role of the State in the resolution of the Social Problem according to the Chilean Catholic Church at the beginning of the 20th CenturyAbstractThe objective of this article is to analyze the development of Chilean Catholic thinking about the role of the State in facing the Social Problem at the beginning of the 20th Century. It is argued that the Chilean Catholic Church gave the State a secondary role in the solution of the Social Problem. Despite recognizing the need of establishing legal regulations to solve problems between employers and workers, the performance of works in favor of workers corresponded to private initiatives that the State should promote, what the Church called “Catholic Social Action”. This preference for a State with limited social action showed a Church that continued to be considered as the governing institution of society, as its actions included both earthly life and life after death. The State, by focusing only on earthly problems, was an institution of lower rank, sheltered by the Church. The research studied some texts written by priests of the Chilean ecclesiastical hierarchy dealing with the role of the State in the resolution of social problems and the public discussion about two social laws: the 1906 Working Class Law and the 1907 Sunday Rest Law.Keywords: Church, State, Social Problem, Social Law.Ação social católica ou intervenção social do Estado?

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Older adults have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. This study examined health care utilization and social isolation during the pandemic among older adults using written surveys and zoom and phone interviews. We compared two subgroups, those reporting physical health problems (N=12) and those reporting no health problems (N=6). Half of those with physical health problems reported postponing routine or elected healthcare as compared to four (66%) in the subgroup without physical health problems. Seven of 12 (58%) older adults with physical health problems reported isolation specifically from decreased participation in church even though as many lived either in a retirement community or with family, suggesting greater environmental or social supports. This compares to two (33%) in the subgroup without physical health problems reporting isolation from decreased participation in church with only one older adult living in a retirement community. Interviews identified three themes that complement these data: avoiding danger, compound stress (reported only among those with health problems (N=4)), and church as the largest event. These findings suggest that those with physical health problems were less able to delay seeking healthcare, were more likely to feel isolated when unable to attend church services, and suffered from compound stress due to the combination of public health directives and social unrest, such as the George Floyd protests. Religious, faith, or spiritual supports may be important buffers against social isolation during public health emergency, especially for older adults with physical health conditions and when there is concurrent social unrest.

Abstract (sommario):
Pope Francis’s two encyclicals—Laudato si’ and Fratelli tutti—belong to the tradition of Catholic social teaching that began in 1891 with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum novarum. There have been continuities and discontinuities within the tradition of Catholic social teaching, but there has been a tendency to downplay the discontinuities. Francis’s two encyclicals show both discontinuities and continuities with the earlier documents. The final section criticizes these two encyclicals as being too overly optimistic in their approach to solving the problems facing the environment and the social, political, and economic orders.

Abstract (sommario):
The social doctrine of the Church involves greater commitment and engagement of the Church in social problems as well as the promotion of relationships that serve justice and peace. The Catholic Church first began relating mass media to its social teaching in the 19th century. As the Church aimed at a broader scope of public, it dealt with means of social communication and examined it through numerous sources – papal encyclicals, conciliar and episcopal documents. The relationship between the Catholic Church and the media is not simple. Approaches to ethics, morality, responsibility and dignity of human beings are sometimes different in media reports and in the aims of the Church in its social doctrine which should provide all members of the society with a sense of direction and instruction for everyday actions. Through the documents presented here, the Church has shown a readiness to face the media as well as the possibility to use them for advancing justice, truth, peace and freedom.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: One of the main characteristics of the Ukrainian religious field is conflict between two large Orthodox Churches – Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). These Churches embrace most part of orthodox population and it makes their conflict potentially dangerous for society. The Russian invasion February 24, 2022 makes many problems for UOC because it is considered to be part of state-depending Russian Orthodox Church. As a result, many believers turned their backs on this church, and the state changed its politics toward it rather harshly. But the extent of the changes in belonging to this church remains uncertain and requires assessment. Purpose: To assess the changes in mass self-identification with Ukrainian Orthodox Church in condition of Russia-Ukraine war. Methods: The analysis of statistical data of the moving of religious community in Ukrainian religious field and analysis of data of confessional identification in national representative public opinion polls. Results: Data of public opinion polls show that on the level of identification with the UOC a significant impact was made by large-scale Russian invasion on February 24, 2022 only. Only in the polls in 2022 there was a significant decrease in the corresponding figure. However, the level of such identification has remained stable even in the situations of the Russian aggression of 2014-2021. Conclusion: Data of public opinion polls show that the large-scale Russian invasion of 2022 has significantly influenced the adherence to and the orientation of the UOC. But at the same time, assessments of such changes, which are making on the confessional identification in these surveys, may be somewhat overstated, and they should be treated with great caution, especially if you base on them a politics in such dangerous area as religion. The UOC has been facing powerful challenges for many years. These challenges have dramatically increased since February 24, 2022, but even now this Church has shown considerable sustainability and the issue of halting of its functioning remains quite conflict-prone, while the benefits from its closing seem rather doubtful. Keywords: confessional identification, confessionals changes, Russian aggression, Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Ukraine

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Ukraine is going through difficult times as a result of Russian aggression, which affects many aspects of society. One of these aspects is state-religious relations, which have undergone significant changes in the context of a full-scale war and the annexation of the territories of Ukraine. The problem is how Russian aggression affects the relationship between the state and religious organizations in Ukraine. This presents sociologists and specialists in social work and social welfare with important tasks, including studying the role of religion in the formation of citizens' identity and their perception of culture, as well as providing social support to people who have suffered from conflict and migration. Solving these tasks is important for ensuring social stability and strengthening national unity in the face of challenges facing society. Purpose: to study the impact of Russian aggression on state-religious relations in Ukraine and to analyze their consequences for socio-cultural and socio-structural changes in Ukrainian society. The work is aimed at identifying the main factors affecting state-religious relations in Ukraine in the context of Russian aggression, and at assessing their impact on society. Methods: Сollection and analysis of data from statistical sources, regulatory and legal documents, Internet resources and other sources, synthesis and systematization of the received data, logical analysis and interpretation of results.. Results: Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to significant social unrest. The war caused the intensification of religious movements within the country. Religion has a great influence on the formation of national identity and the perception of one's own culture. Religious communities become important subjects of formation of the national worldview and support of the authorities in state policy. The war caused religious problems, particularly in the Orthodox Church. The conflicts opened wide opportunities for religious social work. Conclusion: Russian aggression on the territory of Ukraine significantly affected state- religious ties. The war led to the intensification of religious movements and a split in the Orthodox Church. The conclusion of the study is useful for social work and social security, as it allows to understand the relationship between religion and social problems in Ukraine. The study may also have implications for the regulation of social issues and for further research in this field. In general, the results of the study confirm the importance of state-religious ties and their influence on the formation of national identity and culture in Ukraine. Keywords: socio-religious relations, religion, Russian-Ukrainian war.

Abstract (sommario):
Today, digitalisation is widely discussed in the context of various institutions whoseoperational guidelines have made it a daily routine and a necessity for making informationaccessible to the public. The digitisation of museum collections is of particularimportance, both in terms of making them accessible to the public and for art historyresearch. However, many art objects are not only in museums, but also in churches, where, unlike the above-mentioned institutions, digitisation is not a priority and anecessity for them to continue to fulfil their tasks for the public. Considering that most ofthe sculptures created in Latvia before the middle of the 19th century are located inchurches, the paper focuses on the issues related to sacred interiors, digitisationpossibilities and their necessity. The paper analyses a number of problems and proposessolutions to the questions of what digitisation should be in order to give the maximumvalue, rather than digitisation for digitisation's. What are the benefits of a high quality,research-based digitisation of sacred interiors in the Latvian and European context. Theauthor highlights the necessity and importance of creating a digital database of sacredinteriors and masters, ensuring the circulation and accessibility of information not onlyfor art history research, but for society as a whole. The availability of information willcreate the possibility not only to see but to understand what you see and to appreciateuniqueness.

Abstract (sommario):
The progressive secularization of Europe has become an undeniable social fact in recent decades. The separation of state and church, religion and politics, is now widely regarded as the fundamental achievement of modern times. At the same time, however, Europe follows a tradition of Christianity that is over 1,500 years old. At the meeting of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (February 9-15, 2022), it was emphasized, among other things: "European churches are struggling with the influence of a secularized society on their lives and witness." Individual churches cannot solve complex problems, but together there would be more opportunities than challenges. In Montenegro, about half of the population (with higher education) sees a promising future for their country in ecumenical and cosmopolitan thinking and action. Another part of the population of Montenegro still sees nationalist structures and their political representatives as salvation and maximum independence for their country. However, in a populist way, the fact that, especially small countries, need external partnerships is ignored. It seems that the politicians in question are more concerned about their position, about which Caesar said in ancient times: "It is better to be first in a Gallic village than second in Rome". To explain ecumenism in more detail, let's use an analogy - imagine that all Christian churches are housed in one multi-story building. Each church occupies one floor. What good is it for a church on the 20th floor, for example, to only reinforce the walls and floors in its premises for stabilization, if the foundation of the entire house, including the supporting pillars (which connect several floors in the lower and upper parts) would be unstable. Many church decision-makers today see ecumenism as an opportunity for preservation, salvation and future-oriented influence on the "house" of Christian cultural heritage. It should be noted that, although an increasing part of the European population stopped participating in traditional religious practice (at least, regularly), the level of private religious beliefs remained relatively high.

Abstract (sommario):
The fact that progressive theologians and Marxist-humanist sociologists of religion had publicly displayed a significant level of mutual understanding and reached notably similar conclusions regarding Church-state relations by the early 1990s cannot obfuscate the controversies within the sphere of societal life in Yugoslavia that remained least affected by the principles of socialist self-management democracy. On the surface, the relationship between the Catholic Church and the state authorities in Slovenia, the northernmost and predominantly Catholic republic of Yugoslavia, appeared fairly peaceful and cooperative throughout the late socialist period. Furthermore, as this paper illustrates, Slovenian religious policy was proposed as a sophisticated model for the inclusive life of believers in a modern socialist society and presented to Vatican diplomats, international experts, and foreign journalists. Nonetheless, during that period, the more independent intellectuals, Catholic and Marxist alike, who warned that the Slovenian Catholic Church was departing from the course of the Second Vatican Council and that the Communist Party should abandon its orthodox Marxist-Leninist understanding of religion to foster genuine dialogue, were marginalised. Instead, there were lengthy debates focusing on whether certain social activities of the Catholic Church encroached on the domain designated for initiatives of the League of Communists and the Socialist Alliance of Working People. With a mounting crisis and increasing public pressure, some public religious manifestations were allowed in the second half of the 1980s, but the fundamental problems remained unaddressed. Although the liberalization of public discourse in Yugoslavia’s final years brought to the fore issues such as freedom of religion and freedom from religion ‒ both of which were integral to the contested programme of the ruling Communist Party and the type of socialist secular society the Slovenian reformed Communists sought to establish ‒, there was not enough time to rework the entrenched religious policy that had alienated many religious citizens.
