Abstract (sommario):
Abstract If we are to position Poe’s concept of “graphicality” as hovering at the juncture between the verbal and the visual—a gesture toward painting at the same time that it indicates a literary art of description, or ekphrasis—criticism has tended to overlook the centrality of Emanuel Swedenborg’s so-called “doctrine of correspondences” within American art discourses of the 1830s and ’40s. This essay explores the corresponding Swedenborgian valences behind Poe’s own graphicality, putting his work in context of three critical figures in Poe’s orbit who respectively mediated, to one degree or another, Swedenborgian theories: George Bush, the mesmerist and New York University professor of Hebrew and Oriental languages; Thomas Holley Chivers, the southern poet, and close friend of Poe’s; and finally, Christopher Pearse Cranch, the landscape painter. The essay concludes with a brief close reading of Poe’s iconic tale “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the only published work in Poe which explicitly mentions a book by Swedenborg (his “spiritualist” classic from 1758, Heaven and Hell).

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: The purpose was to identify community characteristics that contribute to reductions in readmission rates and reimbursement penalties for hospital systems in upstate New York. Methods: Hospitals in upstate NY were selected (N = 94). Using an ex post facto design and the ecological model, community characteristics of hospital systems were analyzed and coded. Independent t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation tests were conducted. Results: Characteristicscorrelated with reduced hospital readmission rates and reimbursement penalties included hospitals (1) with critical access status; (2) located in counties with a better county health rank; and (3) located in a primary care shortage area that utilized house calls. Discussion: Implications include supporting policies that increase access to services, improve formulas for reimbursement, and encourage innovation in care delivery models. Future research efforts should focus on house calls in primary care shortage areas. Keywords: readmission rates, ecological model, house calls, community health DOI: https://doi.org/10.14574/ojrnhc.v21i1.638

Abstract (sommario):
Over the past decade, an increasing number of linguists have been turning their attention toward the plight of endangered languages. We are realizing that most of the small indigenous languages of the world are in great danger of disappearing over the coming century, if they have not already disappeared. Nor are linguists alone in their concern; the media have become interested in the issue, as have international organizations – like UNESCO, the European Union, and even national governments that have in the past been instruments of the demise of indigenous languages. Clearinghouses are being set up (e.g. the International Clearing House for Endangered Languages at Tokyo University), and funds such as the Endangered Languages Fund. Most active in fighting language extinction are members of the affected communities themselves, who are working on their own, or forging new kinds of partnerships with linguists, in an effort to reverse language shift. In the context of these movements, this excellent book is a welcome and crucial resource. The volume gathers together a set of valuable articles by a group including some of the best scholars in linguistics and some of the best native language teachers: Nancy Dorian, Nora and Richard Dauenhauer, Kaia'titahkhe Annette Jacobs, Colette Grinevald, Marianne Mithun, Ken Hale, Christopher Jocks, Anthony Woodbury, Carol Myers-Scotton, and Nikolai Vakhtin. It is a must-read for anyone – native, linguist, teacher, or policy maker – who is involved with issues of language loss, maintenance, or revitalization.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses Bruce White's twenty-year imprisonment. Bruce still managed to find ways to get high despite jumping in between prisons: the old jail in Hagerstown, Eastern Correctional Institution, Maryland House of Correction, and Western Correctional in Cumberland. At the House of Correction in Jessup, Bruce's identity only stalled at being a junkie and the inmates dubbed him as Frank White after Christopher Walken's drug lord character in the 1990 gangster film King of New York. As Bruce shifted through varying prisons, Fat Donald Echert and his father Charles Wood White Sr died. The chapter also mentions Bruce's disassociation from the world when the World Trade Center came down while he snorted heroin in prison.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Lennie Tristano was the only jazz teacher that I knew of in New York. As soon as I got my first paycheck from Bergen Press, I got Lennie’ s number from Betty Christopher and called him. “I’ d like to study with you.” “Why don’ t you come out and play for me? Then we’ ll see.” Lennie told me how to find his house in Flushing, and I took my valve trombone out there on the subway one evening after work. I sweated and suffered as I stood in the famous blind pianist’ s living room, playing a few choruses on “I Got Rhythm” changes while he accompanied me. I was very nervous, and found myself gasping for air. I hated the sound I was getting and despaired at the banalities I heard myself playing.

At 640 Madison, blackout paper is removed after V-J day; George experiments with natural light. He consults a psychiatrist, an attempt at self-reflection. Vacationing in California, he visits Katherine Anne Porter, who writes for movies. Bernardine Szold Fritz, now a Hollywood hostess, fêtes Lynes alongside local celebrities. Silent-screen star Janet Gaynor and her husband, costume designer “Adrian,” delight him. A sitting with novelist Christopher Isherwood produces a Lynes portrait with mysterious modulations of light and shadow. Enchanted by California sunshine, George considers moving. He accepts heading up Vogue Studios in Hollywood. George packs up and hastily leaves New York, destroying fifty thousand negatives.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter describes how before they left the White House, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter planned to create a peacekeeping institution for the next stage of their careers. Warren Christopher and Charles Kirbo had studied similar places and gave them good advice. Hamilton Jordan wrote a blueprint for it, and on October 2, 1984, they broke the ground for the Carter Center, a private organization that would mediate disputes, work to improve world health, and promote democracy. They made plans for the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum that, when built adjacent to the center, would be gifted to the National Archives. While that major project developed, they embarked upon their first building project with Habitat for Humanity in New York City, Carter wrote The Blood of Abraham; Insights into the Middle East, and they traveled widely in Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America as ambassadors for justice and peace. On October 1, 1986, President Reagan arrived in Atlanta to make the official dedication that marked the opening of both the library and the center.

Abstract (sommario):
A house is a place where we all aspire to cherish quality time with our family. It is believed that a house functions as a home, where one spends most of the life-creating memorable moments with friends and family. With the rapid increase in world population, there has been a surge in the demand for housing space. As more and more individuals are in search of affordable and multipurpose space, it becomes even more important to design a house with a relaxing, pleasant, and aesthetically appealing interior (Husein, 2021). Today’s society is affected by urbanization, which is resulting in an increased demand for housing in the cities, lending to higher marketing prices and smaller apartments. There is a rise in the number of people struggling in present societies due to the increased population and urbanization. More people are drawn towards living in cities, which causes a rise in the number of small spaces (Urist, 2013). According to Doshi, (2019), people living in small houses face various difficulties such as the lack of clearance space, unorganized furniture arrangements, lack of storage space, improper selection of size-wise furniture which could make the room look smaller, the colour of the walls can also make the house look unpleasant, and low ceiling gives an illusion of shorter and bulkier room. Thus, to utilize the space available in the most beautiful way and with the least possible error, proper guidance is of utmost importance. Keywords : Cite : References : Desai, N. (2023). "Born in Iran and currently residing in London, Hossein Amini initially thought that he wanted to be a writer-director after helming a few shorts while at Oxford. But once he started making a living as a writer on other people’s projects, he discovered that he enjoyed focusing on screenwriting. His career began with television movies, The Dying of the Light (1992) and Deep Secrets (1996), but even then Amini knew that his interest was in features. A chance encounter with director Michael Winterbottom at the BAFTA awards in the mid-1990s led to their collaboration on the feature Jude (1996), an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel Jude the Obscure that starred Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet. Amini’s next adaptation was The Wings of the Dove (1997), based on Henry James’ novel—the film went on to receive four Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay. Soon after, Amini signed an exclusive overall deal with Miramax Films, working on the independent company’s diverse projects like Gangs of New York (2002) (for which he didn’t receive a credit) and The Four Feathers (2002). After his Miramax deal ended, he was approached by Universal Pictures to work on an adaptation of a book by crime author James Sallis about an enigmatic getaway driver. The project, Drive (2011), was eventually independently financed and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, receiving rave reviews in competition at Cannes. Though Amini has primarily written for indie and art-house films, he has recently been involved with some major studio projects, including Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and 47 Ronin (2013). Currently, he’s directing The Two Faces of January, his adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel, which stars Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst." In FilmCraft: Screenwriting, 13–14. Abstract (sommario):
Roberta Gironi Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos, UPV. Camino de Vera, s/n. 46022 Valencia Joint Doctorate Dipartimento di Architettura – Teorie e Progetto. “Sapienza” Università degli Studi di Roma. Via Gramsci, 53. 00100 Roma E-mail: roberta.gironi@gmail.com Keywords (3-5): Informal processes, dynamic transformation, new planning approach, flexible space, self-organization Conference topics and scale: Reading and regenerating the informal city Contemporary cities are affected by transformations that put in discussion the claim of control and stability to which the urban project aspires. All those gradual adjustments are manifested according to the demand, bring toward a less formal and more flexible spatial order, for which the traditional forms of the "static" city become the background of the "kinetic" landscape of informal cities. On the contrary of the formal processes of urban planning, informality process is configured as an organic development model and a flexible dynamic system opened to changes. The informal space is produced according to principles of spontaneity and self-organization. A consideration on the possibility to assume different approaches can be proposed. Those approaches should integrate in the design reasoning all the dynamics usually excluded by the discourse on the urban project, which processes can become catalysts to enrich the methods of planning and design of the urban space. Through the analysis of the case-study Previ Lima and the Living Room at the Border of St. Ysidro, the aim is to delineate in which way the contemporary architecture can absorb and metabolize these processes, triggering a different approach to a different method to intervene in the spaces of relationship among formal and informal. It is believed that the informal urban qualities cannot be eliminated and is impossible to ignore the inhabitants' practices, but rather to work on the intersection between collective and individual actions.
