Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation presents a study of Chinese diasporic narratives from Canada and Australia and examines the formation and negotiation of diasporic cultural identity and consciousness. Drawing upon theoretical discussions on diasporas in general, it investigates how the Chinese diaspora is imagined and represented, as a visible minority group, within the context of the multicultural nation state. This dissertation begins with a taxonomy of the modes of explaining diaspora and offers three ways of theorising diasporic consciousness. In analysing the filmic and fictional narrative forms of the Chinese in Canada and Australia, the practices of cultural self-representation and of minority group participation and enjoyment of the nation are foregrounded in order to advance critical analysis of the Chinese diaspora. While taking into account the heterogeneity of the imagined diasporic Chinese community, this study also contends that the formation and negotiation of diasporic consciousness and diasporic cultural identity politics is strongly and invariably affected by the multicultural conditions and policies of their host countries. The adaptation and manifestation of minority groups' cultural practices are thus a matter of social, cultural and political contingencies more often aligned with dominant cultural expectations and manipulations than with the assertiveness of more empowered minority group participation. This dissertation therefore argues for a broader and more complex understanding of diasporic cultural and identity politics in the widespread attempts to merge and incorporate minority group narratives into the key foundational ('grand') narratives of the white nation state. The importance of reinscribing Chinese diasporic histories into the cultural landscapes of their receiving countries is moreover increasingly propelled by the speed and momentum of globalisation that has resulted in the growing number of multicultural societies on the one hand but also led to the homogenisation of cultural differences and diversities. In focussing on the fictional and filmic narratives from Canada and Australia, the diversity of the Chinese diasporic community and their conditions are emphasised in order to reflect upon the differences in the administration and practice of multiculturalism in these two countries. The comparative reading of Chinese-Canadian and Chinese-Australian novels and films locates its analysis of notions of 'homeland' and belonging, community and national and cultural citizenship within the context of the development and negotiation of diasporic identity politics.

Tan, Carole A. "'Chinese Inscriptions': Australian-born Chinese Lives". Thesis, University of Queensland, 2004. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/1826/1/1826_abstract.pdf.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis represents a transdisciplinary study based on qualitative research and critical analysis of oral history interviews and the personal narratives of sixty-seven Australian-born Chinese. It uses cultural studies approaches to investigate the diverse ways Chineseness becomes inscribed into the lives of Australian-born Chinese. It investigates diverse ways Chineseness becomes inscribed into the lives of Australian-born Chinese within three social and cultural spaces Australian-born Chinese inhabit. These are the family, mainstream Australian society and Chinese diasporic spaces located in China and Australia. In examining these three social and cultural spaces, this study seeks to demonstrate that Chineseness represents an inescapable ‘reality’ Australian-born Chinese are compelled to confront in their everyday lives. This ‘reality’ exists despite rights of birth, generational longevity, and strong national and cultural identities and identifications grounded in Australia, and whether or not Australian-born Chinese willingly choose to identify as ‘Chinese’. Nevertheless, despite the limits of Chineseness Australian-born Chinese experience in their lives, this study demonstrates that Australian-born Chinese are individual agents who devise a range of strategies and tactics which empower them to negotiate Chineseness in relevant and meaningful ways of their own choosing.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation deals with the processes of identity formation as observed in the works of the Chinese-American writer Maxine Hong Kingston, especially in her book The woman warrior – memoirs of a girlhood among ghosts, first published in 1976. The different meanings of subjectivity that can take shape in an American of Chinese descent, encompassing an individual’s contradictions and fragmentation, are analyzed. The theoretical framework is based on critics of postmodernism and on cultural studies about diasporas. Since the middle of the eighteenth century a great number of Asian immigrants moved to the United States, taking along with them their different values and behavior patterns. A person growing up in the intersection of cultures has to deal with conflicts and paradoxes, resulting in identities that are contradictory and fragmentary. This dissertation seeks to unravel, on one hand, the processes of identity formation among the Chinese-Americans, faced as they are by two distinct value systems. On the other hand, find out how the different cultural elements are articulated both in the identity formation of the characters and in the construction of the novel. The narratives of Maxine Hong Kingston reveal processes of hybridization, which are characteristic of a diasporic author.

Nie, Weiwei. "Plano de marketing – ISEG". Master's thesis, Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/16570.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
For chineses students, the general knowledge for ISEG's is relatively low, mainly due to the two aspects: communication in the Chinese market and cooperation programs with HEIs in China. In the initial phase of exploring Chinese market, it is crucial for ISEG to understand the Chinese market and the profile of Chinese students, even their parents. The main objetivo for the present project is to explore the profile of Chinese students and their perception in terms of Portugal, through secondary data and the questionnaire for chinese students who are already attending undergraduate, masters and doctorate courses in Portugal. In order to understand the main strengths and weaknesses of ISEG compared with its competitors external and internal, a competition analysis is carried out. Based on that, we find out the main parts to be improved, such as: increase the number of courses taught in English, the communication and cooperation with higher education institutions in China. As a result, the Marketing Plan developed presents several actions and strategies, aimed at improving the image of ISEG in the Chinese market, increase its notoriety, and the enrollment of Chinese students, etc.

Abstract (sommario):

The objective of this study is to investigate how Chinese companies collaborate with Chinese universities. These companies in academic often referred as technology-based firms and follow a trend of Industry-University collaboration. Prior research within this field has found that these technology-based firms generally apply a model when collaborate with universities to reach both exploration and exploitation. Literature has given much attention to firms originating from European countries, and for that matter, more research needs to focus on the collaboration between Chinese firms and Chinese Universities. This exploratory research has incorporated a holistic approach in order to obtain an overall picture of the underlying pattern behind the collaboration. In order to aid and facilitate this investigation, I have followed a conceptual research model that has functioned as a guiding tool for my exploration and analysis. This conceptual research model is comprised of four main Industry-University models: Spin-off Model, joint project development model, joint-lab model and PHD work station. In order to investigate the objectives of the study, four cases from companies and universities were selected representing highly innovative company and university: Westbaltic Components AB, HuaWei Technologies, FuDan University and ZheJiang University.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis studies the cost- and non-cost competitiveness of China and its impacts on the rest of the world between 1970 and 2012. At outset, Chinese commercial performance was gradually enhanced by its cost-competitiveness. Since 1990s, China has lost the cost advantage, especially compared with Thailand and India. Furthermore, Chinese non-cost advantage, based on structural change of export, has relied on the rise of imported inputs. It implies that firstly the dependence of Chinese exports on other countries has increased and, secondly, Chinese exports have progressively induced more exports of the rest of the world than before. Asian countries have been the largest beneficiaries of Chinese export expansion

Hsu, E. L. "Chinese medicine". Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1992. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604684.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores ways in which the style of transmission is related to the contents of knowledge and practice. Chinese medicine has been legitimised and promoted by the government since the 1950s. Its transmission in government units is modelled on that of Western biomedicine. By analysing textbooks, I show ways in which, over the past thirty years, an attempt has been made to standardise the different strands of Chinese medical knowledge, and I refer to it as 'standardised knowledge'. This textbook knowledge conforms to Western biomedical systematisation, a materialist and static view of processes, and the ideology of Marxist dialectics. In settings outside the government work units Chinese therapeutic knowledge and practice has also been modified by Western thought and medicine, but not as systematically. Here, one still finds ways of learning which depend on the personal quality in the relationship between master and disciple. And here, the transmission of Chinese therapeutic knowledge is often veiled in secrecy. The comparison of these different tastes of knowing and healing aims to put the present standardisation of Chinese medicine into context and by highlighting qualities of knowing and healing in other settings of Chinese therapeutics, it points to the limitations of standardising medical knowledge and practice. Chapter One contributes to topics such as Socialist work units (danwei), post-Mao higher education, and curricula in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Chapter Two discusses a 'senior doctor's (laozhongyi) understanding of notions such as Experience (jingyan) and 'science' (kexue). Chapter Three contains case histories of qigong healing, and deals with topics such as voluntary associations and secrecy. Chapter Four contains a translation of Suwen 43 'On Obstructions' and discusses concepts of illness in qigong healing and Chinese medicine, with particular emphasis on Breath (qi). Chapter Five contains a translation of parts of Suwen 66 'The Rules of the Origins of Heaven' and discusses interpretations of concepts such as Change (bain, hua) and the Spirits (shen). Chapter Six discusses the textbook TCM Fundamentals and its precursors, and highlights how the understanding of concepts discussed in previous chapters has recently been transformed.

Zhao, Rui. "Les renaissances et les innovations de la culture traditionnelle chinoise dans la musique contemporaine chinoise depuis les années 1980". Thesis, Paris 4, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA040168.

Abstract (sommario):
From 1980s, CHINA, where great changes have taken placed, has reopened its door to the outside. The Chinese contemporary music has also experienced a rapid development, which leads to the question that how the feature of its development presents.Looking back to the way of Chinese modern music from early 20th century, a common trait can be found in different stages, which can be named as ‘national character’. Meanwhile it extends to various features to reflect the periods. From 1980s, Chinese modern music not only inherits the common character of the previous generations, but also reveals its own distinction. In order to realize all these features, the Chinese musicians of the 5th generation, deriving inspirations and contents from traditional culture of CHINA accompanied by their unique techniques, have created a great amount of musical products. With the worldwide spread of these products, Chinese traditional culture has come to be known gradually. All these lead directly to the renaissance of Chinese traditional culture to a certain extent. In this dissertation, points will be stated from aspects of history, composition technique and aesthetics, etc

This dissertation proposes, as a general objective, to investigate the presence of Chinese groups in Foz do Iguaçu - PR and their relations with local society. The research was developed from an interdisciplinary perspective, based on field of Language Policy, which aims to understand the decisions and relations between languages and society. As for the methodology, the research approach is qualitative and uses several interpretative procedures to understand how the integration experiences lived by the research subjects are configured. Regarding the means of obtaining data, the research was preceded by bibliographic research, followed by field observation and structured interviews. The data reveal that the presence of Chinese writing in public spaces in the city of Foz do Iguaçu is mainly evidenced in commercial establishments aimed at the Chinese community and restaurants specializing in Chinese cuisine. It was verified that, except for the Buddhist temple, the places where the Chinese writing was observed were in the central region of Foz do Iguaçu. Concerning integration, data suggests that there were behaviours of social isolation and little integration with the local community of Foz do Iguaçu. Based on the results, suggestions are made to improve the integration of the Chinese community and to bridge the linguistic borders, such as the insertion of essential information in the Chinese language in the main public services, as well as the proposal of public educational policies for teaching-learning Portuguese language to immigrants. It is expected that this research will contribute to giving visibility to the Chinese languages, as well as indicating ways to decrease the linguistic and cultural border between the Chinese language speakers and local community in the Foz do Iguaçu border context.

Abstract (sommario):
This study's primary objective is to investigate and analyse the motivation and barriers of Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs in Portugal. The Chinese who create new ventures in Portugal with a particular business opportunity should be distinguished from those Chinese who are entrepreneurs for survival. The main demographic group in this study is Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs who arrived in Portugal after 2012. For after this date the demographic structure of Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs changed immensely in Portugal with the divulgation of Residential Authorisation for Investment Activity (ARI), which attracted not only Chinese investors, but also Chinese entrepreneurs who recognised potential business opportunities in Portugal. We advocate a framework of Chinese opportunity-driven immigrant entrepreneurs which demonstrates the motivation and barriers of their new venture in Portugal. As there is a lack of academic studies about Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs in Portugal, we decided to use a qualitative analysis which was divided into two dimensions, namely environmental factors and individual factors. We selected five representative cases of Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs to develop the analysis, through the use of in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs with a set of questions.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Feng shui brings together the knowledge of the Chinese on the notions of time, space, environment and all the building infrastructures. It is indeed Feng shui has guided, from its "coming" almost all the buildings constructed for the living and for the dead in China. Modern ecology and environmental protection are the top priorities to be considered in architectural design. Faced with the idea transmitted by the Feng shui, we can’t help thinking that such ancient discipline, very focused on the environment and housing, can serve as a reference and inspiration in the design of contemporary architecture and treatment of the environment. The basic question of this research is to know what was, or what were, the true (s) source (s) of the doctrine of Feng shui. Through our research, we want to take a step back to the multitude of methods of Feng Shui, and intended to fully concentrate on their cross philosophy, and try to synthesize the different approaches that can have globally of the Feng shui. We have found two major "red threads" of Feng shui .First thread: the "qi 气" is the basic material of the composition of the world. Second thread: Temporality and action of Heaven understood as an impersonal power and instructing exerted on the world through natural regularities. This research is in order to build a research facility on the topic of "the application of Feng Shui in contemporary architectural and environment design" and we hope that this first step will be considered important to the continued reflection

Zhao, Jing. "Phonological awareness in Chinese monolingual and Chinese-English bilingual children". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/32282.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis reports on two studies that examined the development of phonological awareness in Mandarin monolingual children and the bilingual advantages in phonological awareness in Mandarin-English bilingual children. The first study was conducted in Shanghai, China to examine the development of three levels of phonological awareness in Mandarin speaking children (i.e., syllable awareness, onset-rime awareness, and tone awareness) from the ages of 4 to 6. The results showed that like English-speaking children, the development of phonological awareness in Mandarin progressed from an awareness of relatively large segments (e.g. syllables) to smaller ones (e.g., onset-rime). Tone awareness, as a specific phonological awareness of Chinese, was developed earlier than other levels of phonological awareness in Mandarin-speaking children, whereas onset-rime awareness was last acquired. The second study compared Mandarin-English bilingual children's performance on phonological awareness with Mandarin monolingual children and English monolingual children. The results showed that Mandarin-English bilinguals performed better than English monolinguals on the Elision and Blending subtests of the CTOPP. Mandarin-English bilinguals also performed better than their Mandarin monolingual counterparts on all Mandarin phonological awareness tasks except for a syllable deletion task. The results from the two studies are discussed in terms of language-general vs. language-specific developmental profiles of phonological awareness as well as the effects of bilingualism on phonological awareness of both languages in bilingual children. Further clinical and educational implications of these results are also discussed.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Luxury consumption is more and more common in China with the rapid economic development today. Chinese consumers are becoming a main purchasing power of the fashion luxury brands.Chinese women accounted for 45 percent of Chinese luxury goods consumption at the end of 2012. There is no denying that the female Chinese consumers are playing an increasingly important role in the global luxury goods market. Chinese female luxury consumers between 30 and 50 are considered to be called Chinese Dama. The influences of this group of people on fashion luxuries market is becoming more significant. However, no research seems to have noticed the middle aged female luxury consumers group named Chinese Dama. The purpose of our research is to find out the reasons why this group of people, who are so called “Chinese Dama”, are consuming fashion luxuries. We want to define and identify this special fashion luxury consuming group. Hopefully, the findings in our thesis can inspire some fashion luxury companies to notice this new purchasing power and to come up with better sale and product strategies for Chinese Dama.A qualitative research method was developed to meet the purpose of collecting relevant data. Interviews were made with Chinese Dama we met in Gothenburg airport and a Munich fashion luxury shopping mall. We also made a content analysis on articles collected that explain the issue of who are Chinese Dama and the features and lifestyle of Chinese Dama for the empirical study. The findings of our research can provide information for marketers in the luxury market, which concludes that Chinese females have different type of attitudes and motivations including those found by other scholars and the new motivations and attitudes that were discovered in our investigation towards purchasing fashion luxuries, which are brand awareness, materialism, social comparison for attitudes and guanxi, saving face and reselling to make profit. We not only confirm common acknowledge about Chinese Dama, which is known by everyone in China, but also obtain a better understanding of Chinese Dama. We also concluded that the expression Chinese Dama is no longer appropriate.

He, Zijia. "Disparities between American and Chinese Perceptions on Chinese Foreign Policy". Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1926.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There has been a dangerous gap between American and Chinese perceptions of Chinese foreign policy, a gap contributing to acceptance of the Thucydides Trap. With the help of a theoretical framework and empirical evidence, this paper aims to summarize and understand the differences, in an effort to help overcome them and prevent a self-fulfilling prophecy. The author identifies five variables that shape perceptions and then categorizes Chinese foreign policy along several dimensions. Using the South China Sea and the Belt and Road Initiative as case studies, the author finds that US and Chinese interpretations of Chinese behavior along these dimensions are influenced by different variables. While the Chinese views are more affected by history, American perceptions are driven by considerations of power. The two countries understand both identity and norms differently, as well. By showing where the two countries' perceptions diverge, the author hopes to help reduce misunderstandings. The paper concludes with some practical recommendations along these lines.

Tse, Daniel Gar-shon. "Chinese CCGbank: Deep derivations and dependencies for Chinese CCG parsing". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/9439.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The fundamental goal of this dissertation is to establish that deep, efficient, accurate parsing models can be acquired for Chinese, through parsers founded on Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG), a grammar formalism which has already enabled the creation of rich parsing models for English. We harness these CCG analyses of cross-linguistic syntax, harmonising them with modern accounts from Chinese generative syntax, contributing the first analysis of Chinese syntax through CCG in the literature. Supervised statistical parsing approaches rely on the availability of large annotated corpora. To avoid the cost of manual annotation, we adopt the corpus conversion methodology, in which an automatic corpus conversion algorithm projects annotations from a source corpus into the target formalism. The central contribution of this thesis is Chinese CCGbank, a corpus of 750,000 words automatically extracted from the Penn Chinese Treebank, reifying the abstract analysis through corpus conversion. We then take three state-of-the-art CCG parsers from the literature — the split-merge PCFG parser of Petrov and Klein, the transition-based CCG parser of Zhang et al., and the maximum entropy parser of Clark and Curran — and train and evaluate all three on Chinese CCGbank, achieving the first Chinese CCG parsing models in the literature. We demonstrate that while the three parsers are only separated by a small margin trained on English CCGbank, a substantial gulf of 4.8% separates the same parsers trained on Chinese CCGbank. We also confirm that the gap between the states-of-the-art in English and Chinese PSG parsing can be observed in CCG parsing. Our parsing experiments establish Chinese CCG parsing as a new and substantial challenge, a line of empirical investigation directly enabled by Chinese CCGbank.

Giblin, Susan Mary. "Being Chinese and Indonesian : Chinese organisations in post-Suharto Indonesia". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2003. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/653/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In 1998 Indonesia was on the verge of huge political changes. The economy was in crisis and President Suharto's thirty-two year New Order government was coming to an end. Violence, largely directed against the ethnic Chinese in a number of cities on the archipelago, accompanied the political and economic crises. The changes which unfolded led to peaceful elections in 1999, which were judged by international observers to be fair and democratic. These elections placed a new administration in power and with it the hopes of the people that reformasi (reform) would ensue. Immediately after Suharto stepped down things began to change for the ethnic Chinese who had never been fully accepted as Indonesian within Indonesian national discourses. Indeed the presence of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia was constructed as a problem; the "Chinese problem" (inasalah Cina). During the New Order, policy towards Chinese Indonesians was particularly harsh. They were not permitted to celebrate any aspect of their Chinese heritage and official policy dictated that they should assimilate into Indonesian society. This changed after 1998 and the debate about how Chinese Indonesians should behave, and how they should be treated, emerged once again. This thesis investigates a number of Chinese Indonesian organisations which were established or re-established after May 1998. I am particularly interested in how they are articulating both their Chinese and their Indonesian identities in this new climate. I argue that as a result of Indonesian national discourses which construct Chinese Indonesians as "outsiders", it may not be possible for the groups to achieve their joint aims of overcoming anti-Chinese stereotypes and having their Chinese heritage accepted within Indonesia. During the New Order years many ethnic Chinese were reluctant to declare themselves Chinese publicly, or speak about their experiences, which has led to a dearth of empirical material relating to how Chinese Indonesians themselves understand their identities. Therefore, this research is a particularly useful addition to the study of the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia.

Jiang, Yu. "Developing Chinese Students' Metacultural Competence: A Chinese Discourse Analysis Perspective". Thesis, Griffith University, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/416295.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Research by Chinese scholars around cultural distributions and representations in English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks for university and college education in China in the past decade has argued that these textbooks have been designed to extensively develop Chinese students’ cross-cultural communicative competence. However, it is noteworthy that previous studies have identified that the cultural content of these textbooks has little effect on developing such competence of Chinese students. By analysing the 3rd Edition of the New Horizon College English (NHCE) textbook series (Zheng et al., 2017) used by students whose major is not English, this research contributes towards contemporary explorations in understanding Chinese nativisation and conceptualisation of the English language. This research adopts the iterative rigor of document analysis as proposed by Bowen (2009) which combines aspects of content and thematic analysis. Additionally, for the data from the texts that have associated images, Weinger and Kiss’ (2013) semiotic framework is employed to support discussions around the interrelationship between texts, data, and images. This research focuses on the nativised features of Chinese English (CE) i.e., linguistic features (lexis and coherence) and cultural conceptual features (cultural event schema), and investigates the extent to which these features are presented in the NHCE textbook series (Research Question 1). The research further explores how these features may affect the development of Chinese students’ metacultural competence (Research Question 2). The findings of this study highlight an unequal distribution of linguistic and cultural conceptual features in the texts and translation exercises in each of the four books in the NHCE textbook series. Some units contain only data on linguistic or cultural conceptual ii features. Evidence of CE lexis is categorised, presented, and discussed in three parts: transliterations, loan translations, and nativised Chinese English words. The total numbers of evidence of these three parts are 11, 23, and 7 respectively. Two examples each for transliterations, loan translations, and nativised Chinese English words have been selected for discussion. In addition, evidence of CE coherence which is relevant to aspects of Chinese cultural experiences is presented in two examples (i) living in a university dormitory might cause students a giant headache (complemented by the schema: dormitory) and dedication to society (complemented by the schema: social responsibilities), and (ii) showing kèqi (courtesy/politeness) communicative behaviours when offering food to a guest /refusing food from a host at a Chinese family dinner (complemented by the schema: dining etiquette). Furthermore, the study has found fewer data regarding cultural event schemas compared to that of CE linguistic features. There are two examples delineated in this section (i) tea drinking event schema and (ii) world exploration event schema. All of the identified data are closely associated with various Chinese cultural themes and values such as economy and education. It is also argued that the nativisation of the English language is demonstrated through encoded texts and associated images in NHCE which convincingly identified and described Chinese culture and other relevant cultural concepts in a positive manner (Research Question 1). In addition, as the embedded Chinese cultural conceptualisations could be used to provide students with Chinese characteristics-centred definitions of widely understood concepts, it could be assumed that students would be able to integrate these cultural conceptualisations in future intercultural interactions, and the development of their metacultural competence could thereby be facilitated (Research Question 2). This research has implications not only for ELT textbook writers but for writers of iii Second Language Teaching (SLT) textbooks as well. One implication is that it would be necessary to provide students with cultural content containing lexis based on local cultures in SLT textbooks. Additionally, it is beneficial for SLT writers to provide students with cultural content that is written in a way that reflects the discourse features of their mother tongue. Moreover, values and themes of the source culture may need to be culturally conceptualised in textbooks to help students raise the awareness of internalising widely understood concepts into their own culture and then creating their own interpretations of the concepts. Furthermore, incorporating conceptual variations in cultural content could be considered for inclusion in ELT and SLT textbooks.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper studies Chinese-Portuguese code-switching by Chinese immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Twenty-two discourse excerpts, collected during three months, were analyzed in the interactional sociolinguistics approach (GOFFMAN, 2002; BLOM; GUMPERZ, 2002; TANNEN; WALLAT, 2002; AUER, 1955, 1999). The excerpts were grouped in four categories: information technology, culture, emotional role and functional role. A fifth set of excerpts was analyzed in what refers to the interference of Chinese on Portuguese in code-switching. The analysis showed that code-switching, circumscribed to topics and expressive needs related to technology, cultural differences, expression of emotions, functional uses, is a cue to the framing of interactional events in the Brazilian scene, but still in an eastern perspective. This state of affairs is reflected in the structure of alternated sequences in Portuguese, in which Chinese structural features are strong.
