Abstract (sommario):
China has several press quality issues, including censorship, self-censorship, limited freedom of speech, and limited access to information. Such restrictions can lead to misrepresentation of facts, fake news, and lack of critical thinking. However, there is a quality press in China. Some examples of quality press in China include newspapers such as People's Daily, China Daily and Global Times, as well as online news portals such as Xinhua News Agency and CCTV News. These sources are known for providing in-depth coverage of political, economic and social events in China and around the world. In this regard, a study will be relevant, the purpose of which is to conduct a comparative analysis of the Chinese “quality press” with the Russian one from the point of view of international standards and practices using the example of the Xinhua News agency and the RIA Novosti agency.

Abstract (sommario):
China’s foreign aid implements the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind and promotes the common progress of China and developing countries. News about China’s foreign aid released by foreign media is quite significant for overseas audiences to perceive China’s image. This study adopts Ruth Wodak’s discourse-historical approach and corpus-based method to interpret foreign news reports on China’s foreign aid. The macro-level news themes, meso-level discourse strategies and national images, as well as micro-level discourse features are explained with examples. Research shows that news themes reveal the objects, fields and methods of China’s foreign aid. Foreign media widely adopt discourse strategies of nomination, predication, argumentation, perspectivation, intensification and mitigation to shape China as a friendly international donor. A few characteristics of news discourse indicate that several media misunderstand or smear China’s foreign aid, which has a negative impact on China’s international public opinion environment. Therefore, building an effective external voice platform to convey China’s international responsibilities and contributions is necessary, which helps establish a favorable international public opinion environment for China’s development and call on other countries to make efforts to reduce human poverty.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the major public health events of the 21st century and has attracted global attention from the press since its outbreak. This research focused on the analysis of news coverage on the China-related epidemic by American media, aiming at revealing the features of evidentiality in the discourse and elucidating the underlying ideologies. This study can help news readers develop an objective and comprehensive understanding of China. Methodology: This study selected 40 China-related epidemic news reports from The New York Times and The Washington Post during the pandemic. The quantitative and qualitative analyses of the selected news were conducted through AntConc4.2.2 in light of Fairclough's (1992) three-dimensional model. Results: The results of this study indicated the pervasive use of evidentiality in the coverage of the China-related epidemic by U.S. media, wherein distinct evidential markers demonstrated varying frequencies and served different functions. In terms of news sources, American media predominantly relied on hearsay evidentials to attribute information, thereby bolstering the credibility of the reports while subtly conveying a skeptical stance toward China. In terms of reporting modes, the reporting mostly used indirect discourse and employed deduction and induction evidentials to express negative attitudes toward China. All the results were highly related to the social context. Conclusion: Generally, the research underscores the widespread incorporation of evidentials in news discourse, employed to specify or obscure sources of information. Furthermore, evidentials embed certain ideologies and attitudes, which may mislead readers.

Abstract (sommario):
This research explores the variations between Chinese party and non-party newspapers in the framing of trans-edited international news. Existing studies on the framing of Chinese domestic news show that the variations depend on the sensitivity of news, which invokes government control. However, it is not clear how strictly the government would control international news and whether party and non-party news organizations would show similarities or variations in the framing of it. To address these issues, we conducted a comparative quantitative content analysis of 806 pieces of trans-edited international news from one party newspaper and one non-party newspaper. The findings show that the party and non-party newspapers show similarity on the use of three frames but small variations on the other four. This implies a strong control of the Chinese government on the reporting of international news. By comparison, the government control has stronger effects on the party newspaper than on its non-party counterpart.

Abstract (sommario):
This study makes a Critical Discourse Analysis of the ecological and non-ecological features of Chinese English news reports and holds that news reports ultimately serves the interest groups it represents and cannot get rid of its ideological influence. To achieve this, with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model as the theoretical framework and from the perspective of ecolinguistics, this study, based on 29 English news reports on the northward migration of Asian elephants from China Daily and by building up a small corpus, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, aims to analyze the selected corpus with the help of AntConc 3.5.9 (windows) 2020. Finally, through the analysis of text analysis, discourse interpretation, and social interpretation, it is found that Chinese and English news reports have ecological and non-ecological features. At the same time, English news reports in China also try to express and build a harmonious relationship between man and nature. It reflects that China follows the ecological order concept of “harmonious co-existence between man and nature” and the ecological basis of “man and nature are the community of life”.

Abstract (sommario):
The South China Sea disputes involve both island and maritime claims among several sovereign states within the region, namely China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam and Taiwan. Framing an analysis of international news and diplomatic relations allows researchers to examine how news organisations provide their audiences with context regarding news stories through content promotion and exclusion. This study examined how the Malaysian and Chinese newspapers reported about the South China Sea disputes and Malaysia–China bilateral relations. The findings indicated that the newspapers reported the topics with different intensity and prominence, while different news sources were employed. It was also found that conflict was a salient frame used by the various newspapers. In addition, this study found that the Malaysian and Chinese newspapers exhibited different valence in reporting the South China Sea disputes. Among the Malaysian newspapers under examination in this study, Sin Chew Daily (a Chinese-language daily) employed the most similar frame to that of the Chinese newspapers, where the coverage was pervasive with supportive valence towards China.

Abstract (sommario):
Critical Discourse Analysis is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of discourse regarding language as a form of social practice. As a specific discourse, news discourse is a representation of the journalists’ expression and construction of events, as well as readers’ understanding and cognition of the events reported. It functions as a carrier that transmits ideologies and social values. Recently, news reports on the trade conflicts between China and the US has been the focus of world attention. A study of news reports on Sino-US trade conflicts with Critical Discourse Analysis approach helps interpret the relation between language use and social contexts and reveal ideological significance and power struggle in language. Twenty pieces of news reports on China’s tariff actions on the United States, collected from The New York Times from 2018 to 2019 are studied and the result shows that the use of language in the news texts is not arbitrary, but rather dominated by the medium. The options of lexical expressions in news, the selection of clause types and the position of participants enable the medium to construct a negative image of China and to define China as an unfavorable country. The reasons deciding the language use in this discourse are the tension and balance of the power relation between the U.S. and China in the trade war, and the institution’s favor of the American interest, the American political hegemony and the advocacy of force.

With the development of social media, the landscape of international news dissemination has changed significantly. This research is conducted to discover the discursive strategies of Chinese and Western news outlets in China-related news reports on Twitter, one of the most widely used social media platforms. The key objective is to examine China-related news reports on Twitter to explore the different discursive strategies employed by Chinese and Western news media in reporting China. To achieve these objectives, the research data were collected from the Twitter accounts of People’s Daily China, an official news outlet representing the Chinese media, and the New York Times, a leading American/Western news agency. Based on the data analysis, certain discursive strategies were identified in the practices of Chinese and Western media that are causing differences in constructing China’s international image. These results might assist the international audience in gaining a more objective understanding of China and help Chinese news media sources improve their reporting strategies and international communication capacity.

Abstract (sommario):
As one of Chinas most influential news media, China Daily is also an important window for people worldwide to know about the country. This research aims to select four news reports from China Daily and their corresponding English translations, all of which are economic topics, to compare the Chinese and English discourses. At the same time, the research analyzes the translation strategies used during the translation process based on Eugene Nidas functional equivalence translation theory, analyzes the logical differences between Chinese and English languages and corresponding solution strategies, and summarizes the strategies for external news translation. In so doing, the results can better guide the practice of external publicity translation. Research has found that in bilingual news translation, retranslation, including addition, subtraction, and part-of-speech conversion, are commonly used as translation strategies. These strategies ensure that the translator can give full play to his subjective initiative in the translation process and is not limited to the original text. Considering things from the perspective of the target language readers, the translator can also make the translation more in line with the expression habits of the target language. Meanwhile, the translator cannot blindly adapt to the readers and thus damage the information of the original text.

Abstract (sommario):
With the help of corpus statistics, this article compares the China-related covers and reports of TIME over its 100 years of existence and divides them into four periods. As a real-time political news publication, TIME has the characteristic of closely matching the development of the times. In different historical periods, China’s image, China-related cover characters and headlines, and the content of China-related reports vary greatly. The image and report on wartime China are more objective and positive, with a more positive tone. In the Redified China phase, the China-related reports were mainly negative, trying to create a chaotic and bloody image of Communist China for Western readers. In the reforming or Changing phase of China, the coverage shifted from the negative terms to a neutral and objective one, unfolding China’s change and development to the Western world. While in the diversified development phase of China, China-related cover stories and terms on TIME were more objective. The characters and images that TIME tries to highlight were also inconsistent in different historical periods, indicating that the shaping of TIME’s China cover image is deeply influenced by the ideology, news values, culture, and worldview differences of the reporters.

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores the news framing of A.I., China, and the U.S.A. in two mainstream news outlets: The Washington Post and The South China Morning Post. The main objective is to analyse how both, as parts of different discourse cultures, portray the competition for leadership in A.I. innovation between China and the U.S.A. The study takes a critical look at the media discourse on the ‘new arms race’ and what role the news play in localising global technology trends. The empirical part makes use of a combination of manual and automated content analyses. To this end, a dictionary approach that utilises Names Entity Recognition was applied to a large volume of news texts ( N = 3.055) to identify recurring news frames. The findings show similarities in the perception of A.I.’s potentials and versatility but also clear cultural differences in how risks and conflicts are portrayed in both outlets. Although the Washington Post appears more critical about A.I., the South China Morning Post frames the technology as a driver of economic growth and global influence. The discussion offers a starting point for theorising the relationship between mediatisation, tech trends, cultural differences, and international politics.

This analysis contrasts on Chinese smog news (CSN) with American smog news (ASN), probing into the complicated discourse stances and their represented cognitive mechanism. Having been assisted by “glossary extraction”, the authors uncover the correlation between varied stance glossaries and the hidden cognitive mechanisms. The research provides hints on social cognition in news encryption and decryption, based on the database of thirty pieces of news reports from Chinese news agencies and thirty from American sources respectively. The analytical results reveal that Chinese news frequently quotes the comments of officials and is largely dominated by official and political stances of government, whilst American news frequently features occupational and public stances with pervasive individual and personal tones, attitudes, and dictations. This cognitive research on English weather news reports casts light on the discrepancies and commonalities in the adoption of stance glossaries in media discourse, drawing respective cognition construction of media writers from different cultures, which further illustrates how public cognition being framed on social issues in discourses.

Abstract (sommario):
The meaning construction and interpretation of metaphor exist in verbal and non-verbal forms (multimodal forms such as sound and color). As the carrier of verbal and non-verbal symbols, the function of news cartoons is far greater than that of words. Based on the conceptual integration theory, this paper analyzes the multimodal metaphor phenomenon and meaning construction process of news cartoons with the theme of “uniting as one to fight the epidemic” selected from China News Cartoons Network. The research finds that the multimodal metaphorical representation of “uniting as one to fight the epidemic” reflects people’s basic cognition, which is affected by one’s experience, history and culture; the meaning construction of the multimodal metaphorical scene of “uniting as one to fight the epidemic” has the characteristics of dynamic processing. This paper aims to enhance people’s awareness of novel coronavirus through the cognitive interpretation of multimodal metaphors in news cartoons.

The study on which this article was based was part of an international news study, conducted in 10 countries (Australia, China, Chile, Germany, India, Israel, Jordan, Russia,South Africa and the USA). In this article, the way in which crime as a topic is dealt within selected news media is explored. Focus group results were also analysed to establishhow people perceive crime reporting. Shoemaker’s theory on news values is applied toanalyse media content and results from focus groups. From the analysis, it emergedthat the media perform a surveillance function on behalf of their audiences and thatthe news media apply regular news values to decide on the reporting and presentationof news items dealing with crime events. Media audiences make practical use ofinformation provided by the media on crime events to take precautions or to becomeaware of dangerous situations and people. Shoemaker’s theory also provides a valuableframework according to which news content can be analysed and understood. The data used in this study was collected as part of the What’s News? Abstract (sommario):
As a language practice, news discourse is rhetorical that responds to a given circumstance and conveys values and ideas to the target audience with specific goals. This study examined how the English official website in China represented COVID-19 news to affect the public under the rhetorical framework. Using Sketch Engine as the tool for data analysis on a self-built corpus, this study carried out a quantitative analysis of the linguistic features of the COVID-19 news on In Zhejiang, the official English website of China’s Zhejiang Province. Then, based on the data obtained from corpus analysis, this study applied both modern and classical rhetorical theories to conduct a qualitative analysis of the rhetorical mechanism, including rhetorical invention, rhetorical strategies, and style, of the COVID news on the website of In Zhejiang. The results showed that the COVID-19 news was a positive response to the COVID situation in Zhejiang province and China with the purposes of mobilizing the citizens and establishing favorable images of the government and the Zhejiang people. Meanwhile, the news was constructed within its cultural context and Chinese journalism conventions, making it more adapted to the home audience and limiting its appeal to a global audience and effectiveness for worldwide communication. By demonstrating that news discourse is a rhetorical construction, this study provides valuable insights for the news media, particularly Chinese official media, on how to approach the audience rhetorically to improve the persuasiveness of their news reports, as well as a new theoretical framework for the research of public health crises.

Abstract (sommario):
This study analyzes the news coverage of Covid-19 between 23rd Jan. to 29th Feb. in 2020 on The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Based on theories of news framing theory, this study employs the method of news discourse analysis to examine the virus news. The results of discourse analysis show that these two newspapers emphasize the criticism on China's political system and related policy through a western perspective of liberalism and democracy, rather than the epidemic itself. The major themes include the criticism on China's medical system, the Chinese government's media censorship, and the description of China as a threat to the world which could be seen as the macro-proposition behind all the other themes.During the one-month research period, there are very few coverage on the Chinese government's policy against the epidemic such as the official subsidy on virus test and treatment, nation-wide medical support to Wuhan, community isolation policy, or the mobile cabin hospitals. Furthermore, we seldom see the reporting of the cooperation between China and the World Health Organization. The exclusion of these themes in the reporting narrowly and negatively presents the country of China and further strengthens the negative image of the Chinese government as a dictator and global threat.

Abstract (sommario):
National image is an important part of Chinas soft power. The Economist uses a large number of metaphorical frames that relate to all aspects of Chinas development. Through these metaphorical frames, The Economist endows reports with its concepts and attitudes towards China, and these metaphorical frames also influence readers in an invisible way. This thesis uses the theory of framing and conceptual metaphor to analyze about 110 economic reports on China in The Economist in 2021. Specifically, three kinds of framing metaphors are discussed. They are war metaphors, sport metaphors, and journey metaphors. By analyzing the national images constructed by metaphors in each frame, the thesis finds that the journal sees China as a rising power, with its rising international status, rapid economic growth, world-leading technology and active participation in global governance, which constructs a positive image of China as a developing and progressive country. However, due to the inherent ideological bias of the West, the report maliciously smears Chinas national image, especially in terms of regime and human power. In addition, it also believes that China restricts freedom of speech and its environmental pollution is serious. In conclusion, The Economist has constructed an overall negative national image of China, which has exerted profound international influence. In the context of profound changes in the international communication environment, the author hopes that this thesis can provide some enlightenment for improving Chinas international discourse power.

Abstract (sommario):
In an era where social media's impact on public discourse is increasingly pronounced, this study probes into the spread of fake news among Weibo users in China, a significant issue given the platform's massive user base and China's unique media environment. Adopting a quantitative research approach, the study primarily investigates how situational motivation and information-seeking behaviours influence the sharing of fake news. Utilising regression analysis, a method pivotal for understanding the relationship between various independent variables and the sharing of misinformation, the research sheds light on the nuanced interplay of factors that drive users to disseminate false information. Key findings reveal that situational factors, such as the need for social recognition or the urge to disseminate urgent news, considerably elevate the likelihood of sharing fake news. Additionally, the study uncovers the complex nature of information-seeking behaviour: while it generally leads to better-informed decisions, it can sometimes result in the sharing of unverified news under certain circumstances. These outcomes are crucial for understanding the behavioural patterns behind fake news sharing on social media. They offer valuable insights for policymakers, social media platforms, and educators in formulating effective countermeasures against misinformation, aiming to foster a more discerning and informed online community. This study, therefore, contributes significantly to the existing body of knowledge on digital media, misinformation, and public opinion, highlighting the critical need for strategies to combat the spread of fake news in the digital age. Keywords: Fake news sharing, information seeking, situational motivation, agenda-setting theory, China.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1973, "Roe v. Wade" (hereinafter referred to as Roe) became one of the important judgements in modern American society because of its establishment of women's reproductive choice. In 2022, the US Supreme Court officially overturned the Roe case, which also caused an uproar at home and abroad. News media, as an important information dissemination medium, widely influences readers' attitudes and opinions. This paper mainly conducted by the application of the Appraisal Theory, which has developed by the linguist J. R. Martin covering three subsystems: attitude, engagement and graduation, to the study of news reports concerning the Roe. The study is focus on the perspective of the attitude system, and the research corpus consists of a total of 10 news articles selected from two mainstream media both in China and the U.S., China Daily and New York Times. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, this study has discussed in detail the attitude resources in the overturning of Roe in Chinese and American news discourse. Through analysis and comparison, the author finds that there are similarities and differences in the overall distribution of attitude resources between the two media. First of all, the distribution of attitude resources between the two sides is roughly in the same trend. Secondly, New York Times employs more attitude resources than that of China Daily, with a dominant air of negative attitude resources.

Abstract (sommario):
Xinhuanet is a portal of Xinhua News Agency, which is also the most globally influential Chinese website in China. Its Russian version publishes information about China, especially today's China to Russian speakers around the world, provides a window and bridge function in transmitting China's voice, promoting mutual understanding and people-to-people ties. Investigation and analysis of ИА Синьхуа in the Russian-speaking world propagation status, can understand its capabilities and validity of international communication, and also provide reference and experience for relevant media. The key to realizing the capability of news communication is to integrate propagation breadth and validity properly. This survey, is divided into two levels of propagation quantity surveys and propagation values, with data information based on Factiva-Global News Monitoring & Search Engine | DOW Jones, the world's largest digital news database. Starting with six representative keywords about China, this survey investigated the release of relevant content on ИА Синьхуа in the last ten years. The results of the survey showed that, the average display rate in the ИА Синьхуа headlines is 20% of the whole network, which has enhanced the display degree of China on the Internet and achieved the effective coverage of information in a certain extent. Through the comparison and linear regression analysis of the word cloud of high-frequency words with relevant thematic texts in foreign media, it is proved that the frequency of high frequency words in ИА Синьхуа has a significant positive impact on the related values of foreign websites, and the dissemination of which is actively effective. The survey also reflects that there is a problem and deficiency in ИА Синьхуа in terms of international communication, which are mainly reflected in the lack of total volume and continuity of headline dissemination and the difference in focus with foreign media. As an important window for the CIS countries to understand China, ИА Синьхуа needs to further improve the total text volume, especially pay attention to the head- lines design of the text, to make it more in line with the online audience's reading habits. At the same time, in order to continuously improve the external communication power and influence from many aspects such as scale and effect, and continue to provide high-quality information about China for the Russian-speaking world, it is necessary to take into account the information needs and receptive psychology of the audience.

Afghanistan and China have a long credible history and reliable relationship. Afghanistan-China’s friendship has been verified to be the model of cooperation between two neighboring countries. Both states have strong historical, cultural, social, economic, and political relations together. The relationship emerged in front of the world in 1955, when both the countries signed an economic treaty, known as the “Treaty of Economic and Technical Cooperation.” The study aims to investigate the image of China in the Outlook English newspaper of Afghanistan, whereas China’s recent development in trade and the economic rise around the globe has given new birth to the cooperativeness between both the countries. The current trade has reached up to $700 million between both the countries. Thus the study identifies the facts from the corpus-based analysis that the frequency of economic relations between Afghanistan and China has risen due to a significant trust and friendly relation with each other. Moreover, the success in economic trade depends on the positive perspective of an excellent historical background and political relationship in the history of one’s country in another. Both countries’ good historical friendships reveal a significant positive image of China in Afghanistan’s Outlook English newspaper. The occurrences of development, China, cooperation, economic and industrial cooperation reveal China’s interest and friendly relations moving towards Afghanistan in particular. Therefore, such engagements of China with Afghanistan will bring economic development and make a better security situation in Afghanistan.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A multimodal critical discourse analysis of The New York Times and China Daily’s news reports of Covid-19 was conducted to identify the ideologies in Covid-19 news reports. The Covid-19 pandemic was divided into three phases: China’s anti-pandemic phase, first global outbreak, and second global outbreak. The nyt and cd’s Covid-19 news reports not only conveyed facts but also served different ideologies which shifted over each phase. Both the nyt and cd news media employed lexical devices, images, and metaphors to convey different ideologies, shaping people’s perceptions of the pandemic and government measures to control it. The nyt’s Covid-19 reporting implied that China’s pandemic measures were irrational and extreme, and that the Trump administration’s policies during the outbreak were ineffective, while feminism and racism also appeared. cd’s news reports of the pandemic portrayed efficiency by the Chinese government’s in controlling Covid-19 and a positive attitude toward government officials.
