La thèse a pour but de documenter les répercussions de l'utilisation du chien-guide pour les personnes fonctionnellement non-voyantes (PFNV) dans les 3 sphères du modèle conceptuel de processus de production du handicap (CQCIDIH, 1995), à savoir les facteurs personnels, facteurs environnementaux et habitudes de vie . Comparés aux utilisateurs de canne blanche, les utilisateurs de chiens-guides reçoivent significativement plus d'approches aimables de la part d'étrangers, ce qui suggère un apport positif sur les facteurs environnementaux. Au cours de l'année qui suit l'obtention d'un premier chien-guide, les PFNV voient leur participation sociale augmentée de façon significative et leur niveau de bien-être psychologique amélioré de façon non significative, suggérant ainsi une contribution positive du chien-guide au plan des habitudes de vie, mais pas au niveau des facteurs personnels. Ces résultats sont discutés en lien avec la documentation relative aux bénéfices pouvant être tirés des relations avec les animaux, ainsi qu'à la question du bien-être et de l'intégration sociale des PFNV.

This study examines how an ethnic minority group copes under conditions of adversity. It follows in the tradition of a wide body of qualitative work that has investigated racial minorities and their everyday experiences. Much of the existing work, however, focuses on merely describing thematically and/or conceptually what goes on. The current study aims to construct an integrated conceptual understanding of how a minority group engages in the coping process. More specifically, this study seeks to develop a substantive theory that can explain and predict human behaviour. Grounded theory methodology was used in aid of the theory development process (see Glaser and Strauss, 1967). Lorsqu’ils s’adressent à leur chien beaucoup de propriétaires ont une modalité vocale particulière : le discours adressé à l’animal de compagnie. Ce registre de communication ressemble beaucoup à celui utilisé par les parents lorsqu’ils s’adressent à leurs nourrissons. Ce qui suggère des soubassements communs. Ces deux registres partagent des caractéristiques qui les distinguent du discours adressé à l’adulte, comme une fréquence fondamentale plus élevée et une modulation plus importante. Une série d’expériences réalisées à l’Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire d’Alfort, nous a permis d’étudier comment le discours adressé à l’animal de compagnie intervient dans l’interaction homme-chien. Le premier chapitre montre que les caractéristiques acoustiques et verbales du discours adressé à l’animal de compagnie varient en fonction du contexte de l’interaction. Le deuxième chapitre s’intéresse à la manière dont le chien traite l’information vocale humaine, nos résultats suggèrent de manière générale un biais en faveur de l’hémisphère droit. Le troisième chapitre indique que le discours adressé à l’animal de compagnie augmente significativement l’attention du chien. Ce phénomène n’est pas perçu par les observateurs humains comme le montre le quatrième chapitre. A travers l’ensemble de ces études, essentiellement centrées sur le discours adressé à l’animal de compagnie, nous mettons en lumière la complexité de la communication homme-chien
When addressing their dogs, owners often use a special speech register called pet-directed-speech. This communication modality is very similar to infant-directed-speech used by parents when speaking to young children, which suggests common bases. These two types of speech share characteristics that differ from those of adult-directed-speech, such as a higher fundamental frequency and greater modulations. A series of experiments carried out at the National Veterinary School of Alfort allowed us to explore how pet-directed-speech occurs in the human-dog interaction. The first chapter shows that acoustic and verbal features of pet-directed-speech vary according to the interaction context. The second chapter aims to highlight how dogs process human vocal information; overall, our results reveal a right hemispheric advantage. The third chapter indicates that pet-directed-speech increases significantly dogs’ attentional state. This phenomenon is not perceived by human observers, as it is shown in chapter four. Together, these studies which mainly focused on pet-directed-speech bring to light the complexity of the human-dog communication

Abstract (sommario):
Early perceptual learning capacity has been shown to correspond with the relative status of emergent sensory systems throughout prenatal and postnatal development. It has also been shown that young infants can learn perceptual information during perinatal development. However, the exact nature of the relationship between prenatal and postnatal perceptual development and the role of early experience on learning ability have yet to be examined. The present study examined how auditory learning capacity in bobwhite quail chicks is affected by the interrelationship between the developing auditory and visual systems in late prenatal/early postnatal development. Chicks were provided with auditory information during the period immediately prior to or the period following hatching. In addition, visual experience was either provided or attenuated during both the prenatal and postnatal periods. Findings revealed that chicks postnatally exposed to 10 min/hr of maternal auditory stimulation in lighted conditions required 72 hr exposure to the call in order to learn that bobwhite maternal call (Experiments 1A and 1B). Control chicks who experienced the prenatal egg-opening procedure demonstrated no naive preference for two individual variants of the bobwhite maternal assembly call (Experiment 2). However, embryos who received 10 min/hr of prenatal visual stimulation, or who were reared in prenatal darkness successfully learned a maternal call with only 24 hr of postnatal exposure (Experiments 3A and 3C). Embryos who received prenatal visual and postnatal darkened rearing conditions (a mismatch between prenatal and postnatal experience) showed deficits in postnatal auditory learning (Experiment 3B). Embryos who were exposed to 10 min/hr of prenatal maternal auditory stimulation and 10 min/hr of nonconcurrent visual stimulation remembered the maternal call into later ages of postnatal development than in previous studies when reared in lighted or darkened postnatal conditions (Experiments 4A and 4B). However, when all prenatal and postnatal visual experience were both removed from embryos' and chicks' environments, deficits in prenatal auditory learning and postnatal memory were observed (Experiment 4C). These results indicate that prenatal and postnatal learning in bobwhite quail occur differently, that mismatches in prenatal and postnatal experience interfere with postnatal auditory learning, and that prenatal learning and postnatal memory are affected by the amount of visual stimulation present within chicks' environmental milieu. In the broader scheme, these results provide further evidence that the auditory and visual systems are linked during early development and support an ecological perspective of learning and memory.

Les personnes SDF et leurs chiens restent à la marge de la majorité des dispositifs sociaux et sont l’objet d’un contre-transfert social généralement négatif. L’objectif de ce travail est de comprendre pourquoi certaines personnes ont des chiens dans la rue. En s’appuyant sur un référentiel psychanalytique, cette recherche se fonde sur les discours d’acteurs rencontrés sur le terrain et sur des entretiens semi-directifs réalisés auprès de neuf SDF possédant au moins un chien, rencontrés au sein d’un CAARUD et d’un CHRS. Les entretiens ont été traités à l’aide de l’analyse de contenu (Bardin, 1977 ; Castarède, 1983) et d’une analyse clinique de cas (Castro, 2005 ; Pedinielli, 2005). Les résultats soulèvent un paradoxe. D’une part, le chien apparaît notamment comme un support d’étayage aux besoins du moi (Roussillon, 2008a); comme un objet de relation (Gimenez, 2002) et la relation à l’animal comme une voie d’accès à l’aire transitionnelle (Winnicott, 1971b) où œuvrent les processus d’identification projective normale et d’identification introjective (Bion, 1962, 1967). D’autre part, cette relation peut incarner une défense psychique contre une souffrance psychosociale et une stratégie de survie conduisant, paradoxalement, ces personnes à se suradapter à leurs conditions de vie délétères sans pouvoir le penser. Seules une véritable préoccupation sociétale et des prises en charges adaptées pourront soutenir le chien comme un moyen par lequel le sujet peut négocier sa souffrance psychique, son identité et développer sa subjectivité. Comprendre cette relation implique par ailleurs une approche en santé mentale, soucieuse des ressources du sujet et de son environnement
Homeless people and their dogs remain on the fringe of most social structures and are subject to a generally negative social counter-transference. This study aims at a better understanding of why some people living on the street have a dog. Within a psychoanalytical frame of reference, this research is based on speeches of actors encountered on the field and includes semi-directive interviews conducted on nine homeless people possessing at least one dog encountered in a CAARUD and a CHRS. A content analysis (Bardin, 1977; Castarède, 1983; Pedinielli, 2009) was conducted on all these interviews. The nine dog owners were each object of a clinical case study (Castro, 2005; Pedinielli, 2005; Schauder, 2012; Thurin, 2012). The results showed a paradox. On the one hand, the dog appeared as a way of supporting the needs of the ego (Roussillon, 2008a) and as an object of relation (Gimenez, 2002). Similarly the relationship with the animal appeared as a means of gaining access to the transitional area (Winnicott, 1971b) where processes of normal projective identification and introjective identification develop (Bion, 1962, 1967). On the other hand, this relationship may embody a psychic defense against psychosocial suffering and a survival strategy paradoxically leading these people to unconsciously over-adapt to their nefarious living conditions. Only real societal concern and appropriate care can support the dog as a way for the subject to become a real subject and for him a way to soothe the psychical pain and shore up his identity. Understanding this relationship also implies using a mental health approach, taking into account the resources of the subject and his environment

La definition du cahier des charges des protheses articulaires necessite une connaissance approfondie de la biomecanique de l'articulation consideree tant en ce qui concerne ses mouvements, leurs directions, leurs amplitudes, qu'en ce qui concerne les forces qui s'y exercent, leurs directions, leurs intensites. Les biomateriaux mis en uvre, choisis en fonction de leur biocompatibilite, devront permettre les deplacements articulaires et devront resister, avec le temps, aux forces auxquelles ils sont soumis ainsi qu'aux moments induits par les forces et les deplacements. Ce memoire traite ces deux aspects du cahier des charges des protheses articulaires. Celles-ci concernent aussi bien l'homme que l'animal. L'arthroplastie totale de hanche, en l'occurrence, est, depuis plusieurs decennies, pratiquee relativement frequemment chez le chien. La partie relative a la biomecanique articulaire presente une etude realisee sur le membre pelvien du chien de race berger allemand a l'aide de systemes d'analyse du mouvement et d'une plate-forme dynamometrique. Apres demonstration de la faisabilite, un protocole d'analyse a la fois cinematique et cinetique a ete mis au point et sa validation a ete amorcee a partir d'essais menes chez sept chiens sains et un chien dysplasique. Il s'agit la d'une etude preliminaire dont la poursuite permettra de connaitre les conditions de fonctionnement physiologique et dynamique des articulations du membre pelvien. L'amelioration des biomateriaux par implantation ionique en azote interesse la surface forttante des protheses. La seconde partie de ce memoire concerne l'alliage ti-6al-4v implante en ions azote et son frottement contre le polyethylene a haute densite. L'implantation ionique en azote de l'alliage ti-6al-4v ameliore sa resistance a l'usure et ses qualites tribologiques dans le couple de frottement considere. Cette implantation ionique doit etre parfaitement maitrisee. Si tel est le cas pour des surfaces planes, il n'en va pas de meme pour des geometries spheriques comme les tetes femorales de protheses de hanche. Aussi les conditions d'implantation de telles tetes en ti-6al-4v ont-elles ete etudiees afin d'obtenir une repartition des ions azote la plus homogene possible. Les surfaces et sous-surfaces implantees ont ete analysees, essentiellement par xps (xray photoelectron spectroscopy), de maniere a connaitre leur composition et a apprehender leurs qualites tribologiques. Dans ce memoire, l'aspect biomecanique relatif au fonctionnement de l'articulation et celui des biomateriaux focalise sur l'amelioration des surfaces frottantes ont ete analyses dans une meme etude pluridisciplinaire, mettant en evidence les specificites des problemes relatifs aux implants articulaires

This was an exploratory study which used Flanagan's Critical Incident Technique to find out the factors which hinder or facilitate the psycho-socio adjustment of students from The People's Republic of China to Canada. The 21 subjects for the sample were drawn at random from a name list provided by the Chinese Visiting Scholars and Students Association at University of British Columbia. All of the subjects were graduate students or visiting scholars and had been in Canada for 9-12 months at the time of the interviews. All subjects were able to identify incidents which hindered or facilitated their first year psycho-socio adjustment to Canada. The total of 385 incidents, 175 facilitating and 210 hindering incidents, were reported. The average number of incidents reported per student was 19.2. Ten major categories which facilitate or hinder PRC students' psycho-socio adjustment to Canada have been found through this research. Considering the number of incidents reported by the participants, Academic Study & Research was ranked the first place among 10 categories. According to the rate of participation, Language Barriers & Improvement was listed the highest among 10 categories. Considering the number of facilitating incidents reported by the participants, Initial Settlement was placed the highest. In the number of hindering incidents, category of Language Barriers & Improvement was listed the highest among the 10 categories. The explanation of the research findings and suggestions for how the findings might contribute to the understanding PRC or other Oriental international students are included in the discussion.

The present study aimed to verify the Acupuncture effectiveness for stress symptoms treatment. The 20 participants, all volunteers from the Community, 15 female and 5 male, aged from 27 to 65 years old, answered the researcher s invitation announcement. The pre-treatment was composed by the participants acceptance though. The Free and Informed Consent signature, and then the application the Lipp s Stress Symptoms Inventory (ISSL), of an interview, the Analogue-Visual Scale (EAV), that accesses the participants demand. Participants who attended the inclusion criterion, that was the presence of stress symptoms, had received the 10-sessions Acupuncture Treatment at the Instituto de Psicologia e Acupuntura Espa?o Consci?ncia. These sessions, conducted by 5 acupuncturist psychologists oriented by Professor Delvo Ferraz da Silva, were individual, weekly, and endured 50 minutes each. All participants were submitted to the same instruments after the 10 sessions, and also registered their personal opinion about the treatment. The general results has indicated that before the Acupuncture Treatment, 60% of the volunteers were in the resistance phase of stress, and the demand intensity average was 8,1, considering a scale from 1 to 10. After the treatment, the stress presence was significantly reduced (p<0,001), as the stress level (p=0,006), the symptoms predominance (p=0,02), and the demand intensity (p<0,001). As the Acupuncture Treatment reduced significantly the stress symptoms presence, it s possible to conclude its effectiveness in this sample.
O presente estudo objetivou verificar o uso da Acupuntura na sintomatologia do stress. Os participantes foram 20 adultos, sendo 15 mulheres e 5 homens, na faixa et?ria de 27 a 65 anos, provenientes da Comunidade em geral que responderam ao an?ncio da pesquisadora para participa??o na pesquisa. Os volunt?rios que aceitaram participar, assinaram o Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido, e logo ap?s foram submetidos ? aplica??o do Invent?rio de Sintomas de Stress de Lipp (ISSL), para avaliar a presen?a de stress, a um question?rio e ? Escala Anal?gica Visual (EAV), para avaliar a intensidade da queixa (sintoma principal do ISSL) do participante. Essas avalia??es constitu?ram a fase pr?-tratamento. Assim, os participantes que atingiram os crit?rios de inclus?o do estudo, participaram do Tratamento de Acupuntura, que foi realizado em 10 sess?es individuais, com freq??ncia semanal e com dura??o de aproximadamente 50 minutos. O Tratamento de Acupuntura foi realizado nas salas do Instituto de Psicologia e Acupuntura Espa?o Consci?ncia por cinco Psic?logos Acupunturistas formados no Instituto, igualmente treinados, que seguiram orienta??es sistematizadas, com supervis?o do Professor Delvo Ferraz da Silva. Ap?s as 10 sess?es de acupuntura, os participantes foram reavaliados com os mesmos instrumentos de avalia??o psicol?gica (EAV e ISSL), utilizados na fase pr?-tratamento, e tamb?m foram solicitados que expressassem a sua opini?o sobre o Tratamento. Os resultados gerais mostraram que antes do Tratamento de Acupuntura, 100% dos participantes apresentavam stress, j? que este era um crit?rio de inclus?o da pesquisa, sendo que 60% se encontravam na fase de resist?ncia, e a m?dia da intensidade da queixa era 8,1, em uma escala que variava de 1 a 10. O tratamento foi capaz de reduzir significativamente a presen?a de stress (p<0,001), o n?vel de stress (p=0,006), a predomin?ncia de sintomas (p=0,02) e a intensidade da queixa (p<0,001). Conclui-se que o Tratamento de Acupuntura foi ?til na redu??o da sintomatologia do stress desta amostra, considerando-se seus efeitos imediatos.

This study is a discourse analysis of leadership among Thai staffworking in non-profit cross-cultural organizations in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The purpose is to study the pervading leadership discourses, how these are affected by the fact that they are working in non-profit cross-cultural organizations, and how the staffexperiencesconflicting discourses in the organization. The material consists of six interviews with Thai staff. The result includeseight leadership discourses, where the two greatest are relational leadership and national culture. Relational leadership includes the importance of relationship between leaders and followers, something that also characterizes the Thai culture. The national culture discourse consists of descriptions of leadership stylesthatdepend onnational culture. Several of the other leadership discourses presented also include similarities with the Thai culture as explained by for example Hofstede (1980) and Ukosakul (2005), while others are descriptions of transformationalleadership, a leadership style said by some to be universal(Den Hartog, House,Hanges, & Ruiz-Quintanilla, 1999). The leadership discourses are affected by the fact that the informants are working in non-profit cross-cultural organizations, causing for example challenges in communication. The informants also describe that they adapt to theculturesof the people they are working with, but also expect leaders to adapt to the local culture and context. Despite differences in national culture, the organizational goals create a common base. The conflicting discourses that are describedhave to do with national cultures, both between different national cultures, but also between culture and personality or religious discourses.

This study focused on Viktor E. Frankl's major concepts and the therapeutic techniques which emerge from his theory of logotherapy. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to examine the philosophy and human nature as set forth by logotherapy, (b) to explore the relevance of logotherapy to Taiwanese culture and (c) to inquire what contributions logotherapy could make to the mental health of the Taiwanese community abroad and in the United States. In order to achieve these purposes, a survey was conducted to investigate the compatibility between logotherapy and traditional Chinese philosophies, Confucianism and Taoism. The survey suggested that logotherapeutic orientation was helpful and relevant to cross-cultural counseling. Its holistic worldview made it easier for cultural integration. The survey also supported that there were closed relationship and compatibility between logotherapy and traditional Chinese philosophies. The will to meaning, the basic tenet of logotherapy, has also been a central motivation in the Taoist and Confucian way of life. All three philosophies have shared understanding of human freedom and responsibility. They have also shared the techniques which were employed in the case studies to effect the cure. Guidelines for counselors involved in cross-cultural counseling and psychotherapy were developed from the survey and presented in a practitioner's guide to logotherapy. The procedures and techniques were applied with great caution for they could have been counter-productive if not applied appropriately. A further research and validation of the techniques are needed.

Notre travail de recherche traite de la problématique d’expression de la signification et de la philosophie d’une œuvre artistique, dans une compréhension individuelle, par l’interactivité numérique de façon inconsciente. Ainsi, nous mettons en place des expérimentations d’installation artistique interactive fondées sur des analyses approfondies de l’art traditionnel, de la technologie innovante, de la philosophie, de l’esthétique et de la psychologie (notamment sur la cognition et l’inconscient). A cet effet, nous posons deux questions centrales : quelle est la relation entre philosophie et psychologie ? Comment utiliser les interactions numériques pour influencer la compréhension du participant de façon inconsciente ? D’abord, nous nous focalisons sur des recherches de l’esthétique artistique, de l’art traditionnel chinois, de sa philosophie et de la technologie numérique. Nous proposons de créer un « scénario d’interaction » pendant la conception et réalisons une installation artistique interactive concernant l’hybridation entre la philosophie « Qi » et les ondes cérébrales. L’objectif n’est pas tant d’effectuer une démonstration numérique, mais plutôt de mieux mettre en évidence les relations entre la technologie innovante, la philosophie de l’œuvre et la compréhension individuelle. Our research deals with the problem of expression of meaning and artistic philosophy toward individual understanding by using, in an unconscious way, digital interactivity. Thus, we will realize some interactive art installation experiments that are based on a profound analysis of traditional art and innovative technology, as well as philosophy, aesthetics and psychology (especially on cognition and unconscious), also an analysis of unconscious and psychotherapy. We asked two central questions: what is the relationship between philosophy and psychology? How to use digital interactions to influence understanding unconsciously? For answering these questions, we focus on the expression of the artistic philosophy and individual understanding related to digital art visualization and innovative interactive technologies.First, we focus on research of the aesthetic of traditional Chinese art, traditional Chinese philosophy and digital technology. We propose to create an “interaction scenario” during conception. Otherwise, we created an interactive art installation based on the hybridization between the Qi philosophy and brain waves. The objective is not to make a digital artistic demonstration, but to better introduce the relationship between innovative technologies and philosophical understanding. Next, the research focuses on psychology (cognition and unconscious) to achieve a new interactive method named “unconscious interactivity”. This method is implemented by another interactive art installation including brain control, olfactory suggestion and body perception

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of filial therapy in: (a) increasing Chinese parents' empathic behavior with their children; (b) increasing Chinese parents' attitude of acceptance toward their children; and (c) reducing Chinese parents' stress related to parenting. The experimental group, consisting of 18 Chinese parents, received 10 weekly 2-hour filial therapy training sessions and conducted a weekly 3 0-minute play session with one of their children. The control group, consisting of 16 Chinese parents, received no treatment during the ten weeks. All the parents were videotaped playing with their child before and after the training as a means of measuring change in empathic behavior. The two written self-report instruments completed for pretesting and posttesting purposes were the Porter Parental Acceptance Scale and the Parenting Stress Index. Analyses of Covariance revealed that the Chinese parents in the experimental group had significant changes in all 12 hypotheses, including (a) a significant increase in their level of empathic interactions with their children; (b) a significant increase in their attitude of acceptance toward their children; and (c) a significant reduction in their level of stress related to parenting. This study supports filial therapy as an effective intervention for Chinese parents and their children. Filial therapy equips Chinese parents with healthy parenting skills and knowledge and indirectly empowers Chinese children who experience an increase in parental empathy and acceptance. Thus, filial therapy offers significant possibilities for promoting the parent-child relationship and well-being of Chinese families.

This thesis investigated reading and related skills in Chinese children learning English as a second language (ESL) in 279 Chinese twin pairs aged from 3 to 11 years. Children were tested twice, a year apart, with measures of visual word recognition, receptive vocabulary, phonological awareness, phonological memory and speech perception in both Chinese and English and Chinese tone awareness. The thesis was divided into two sections with the first section exploring the phenotypic relationships and the second section estimating the genetic and environmental influences. In the first section, the causal relationships among the five ESL skills were modelled (chapter 4) and the relationships between Chinese and ESL skills were sought (chapter 4). In section two, the univariate heritability (chapter 6), the cross-linguistic genetic overlap (chapter 7) and the stability and instability of heritability estimates (chapter 8) for all skills were examined. Findings have shown that ESL speech perception is important to the development of ESL phonological awareness, phonological memory and receptive vocabulary, in turn, has an impact on ESL reading development. Genes play an important role in ESL and Chinese reading development. The differential environmental effects may be due to the differences in the ESL and Chinese acquisition ecologies.

在香港國際學校,相較于本地學校,更加激烈的崗位競爭、英語為工作語言的整體環境以及背景多樣化的學生等因素是否會導致教師們對職業的認同感和成就感有所不同呢?瞭解國際學校中文教師職業倦怠的情況對教師的個人職業發展、教學工作的有效開展和學校的教師管理都具有重要意義。 本研究旨在對香港國際學校中文教師職業倦怠的情況進行調查,通過Maslash(MBI-ES)問卷,分三個維度(情緒衰竭、非個性化、低成就感)對中文教師職業倦怠的程度進行描述;其次,利用訪談對倦怠的原因和影響因素進行探討和分析。 本次調查採取方便取樣的原則,隨機抽取國際學校中文教師30 人進行調查,利用SPSS17.0 對數據進行整理和分析,組間的差異性采用方差分析(單因素ANOVA)和t 檢驗,人口學特征和職業倦怠各維度的關系采用線性回歸進行分析。 研究發現,香港國際學校的中文教師在情緒衰竭和去個性化兩個維度上表現出中度倦怠,而在低成就感上得分較高,即有較高的成就感體驗。不同性別的教師在倦怠程度上無差異; 不同年齡的教師在低成就感維度上差異顯著( P=0.000),本次調查中,20-30 歲的教師成就感最低,50 歲或以上的教師最有成就感;從入職時間上看,有1-2 年工作經驗的教師有相對高的情感衰竭情況(22.00±6.06);不同入職時間的教師在成就感上差異顯著(P= 0.018),從事對外漢語教學工作3 年或以下的教師成就感低於有3 年以上工作經驗的教師。此外,學歷與成就感表現出顯著相關(B=3.195,P=0.034),學歷越高在教學上的成就感體驗也就越高;同時,香港以外的教學經驗與成就感呈現顯著相關( B=2.253,P=0.05),即教學經驗豐富的教師擁有相對高的成就感。 This study assessed teachers' burnout from different genders, ages, working years, educational levels, working hours and working experience in a sample of 30 Chinese in-service teachers in Hong Kong International Schools by MBI-ES questionnaire and interviews and draw conclusions as follows: The general findings suggested that on the burnout components, indicating moderate levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, but high or nearly high levels of reduced personal accomplishment. Teachers' reduced personal accomplishment is significant in age( P= 0.000 ) and working years( P= 0.018): teachers of 20-30 years old have the highest scores in reduced personal accomplishment and teachers of 50 years old or above have the lowest scores; teachers with less 3 years working experience have the highest scores in reduced personal accomplishment. What's more, overseas teaching experience and educational levels are highly relevant with reduced personal accomplishment.

People of Chinese heritage often face complex challenges because of the conflicting values from China and America, especially on sexuality. Through two thousand years of socialization, Chinese culture grew to endorse conservative sexual values and gender roles. In traditional Chinese culture, women are expected to remain chaste and play submissive roles in marriage. Sexuality is treated as a taboo topic that should not be discussed directly. Asian American youth who endorse less traditional Chinese values experience lower sexual satisfaction, lower confidence in their own abilities, and higher adherence to traditional gender roles. Language has also been found to potentially influence how people engage in sexuality by triggering a mindset of Chinese or English culture background. The current study assessed ethnic identity and acculturation experiences as correlates of sexual and intimate interactions with partners among people with Chinese heritage, and how English and Chinese language are used in relationships. For men, more endorsement of traditional Chinese and mainstream American culture was associated with greater feelings of conflict in their cultural identity. Greater feelings of identity conflict linked to lower ability to effectively and assertively communicate with a partner on sexual topics. Men with higher feelings of identity conflict also reported higher double sexual standard. Women, on the other hand, did not report increased feelings of conflict as they endorsed Chinese and American cultures more strongly. Women's preference for English language was related to their ability to effectively and assertively communicate with partner on sexual topics, whereas men's preference for English language was related to greater communication with partner and lower double sexual standard. Moreover, language fluency was the strongest indicator of language preferences regardless of the contexts or the topics. When making decisions or expressing positive feelings to partner, participants considered a language more effective when they are more fluent in it. However, when expressing negative emotion or discussing sexual topic with partner, people tended to prefer English because English has clearer labels for emotions and sexual terms. In sum, cultural identity, acculturation experiences, and language proficiency all related to Chinese bilinguals' sexual and romantic attitudes and behaviors, although unique patterns emerged for men and women.

International students often desire to study overseas and many countries, including New Zealand, welcome them into their schools and universities. Students from Mainland China, one of the most populous countries in the world and, until quite recently closed to the rest of the world, have, in the past few years, made up the large majority of those who come to New Zealand to study. Those wishing to enter university after completing high school in China must acquire a specified level of English and successfully complete a two semester long Foundation Studies course, before being eligible for undergraduate study. Research into independent or self-regulated learning has shown that Western (mainly American) students are much more successful academically and enjoy their studies more if they are willing and able to self-regulate their learning. This research has occurred mostly in Western settings with Western participants. The present research using a mixed methods approach aimed to examine the self-regulated learning, epistemological beliefs, demographic factors and personality traits of Mainland Chinese students studying in the Foundation Studies course and to determine whether any of these factors appeared to have any appreciable effect on their experiences in the course and on their final outcomes. The research found that while no one specific factor seemed to determine experiences and outcomes, it would appear that personality characteristics of face, optimism and other Dependability scores may mediate factors such as ability (measured by grades), length of time in the country, self-regulated learning and motivational strategies (such as organisation, time management, effort regulation and self-efficacy), and previous independent learning to influence these experiences and outcomes. While it appears that the North American theory of self-regulated learning is applicable to these students, it seems that cultural beliefs may affect which self-regulatory factor is most salient in their academic outcomes. Further research would be valuable to clarify these differences.
