Abstract (sommario):
The creative comparisons prospective chemistry teachers make about “chemistry” and the “chemist” may reflect how they perceive these concepts. In this sense, it seems important to determine which creative comparisons prospective teachers make with respect to these and how these can change after the history of chemistry is treated in the classroom. This study seeks to investigate the impact of the basic History and Philosophy of Chemistry course on prospective chemistry teachers’ perceptions towards chemistry and the chemist. The study was conducted during the 2012–2013 academic year at a state university in Turkey with 38 prospective chemistry teachers. A creative comparisons questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection instruments in the study. This questionnaire was administered to the prospective teachers in the form of a pre-test, post-test, and retention test. Results of the analysis showed that the prospective teachers produced creative comparisons related to chemistry in the pre-test that mostly relied on their own experiences and observations, but that in the post-test and retention test, their comparisons mostly contained references to the role of chemistry in daily life, its development, and its facilitating aspects. Similarly, it was observed that in the pre-test, the prospective teachers made creative comparisons regarding the chemist that related mostly to the laboratory, but that the post-test and retention test rather contained the aspects of chemists as researchers, meticulous persons, facilitators and managers. Also, 18 prospective teachers were engaged in interviews to understand their prior knowledge about chemistry and the chemist, as well as the reasons for the changes in their creative comparisons. The results of the interviews indicated that a large majority of the prospective teachers were able to fully reflect on their inadequacy about their previous knowledge about “chemistry” and “chemist,” and it was seen that they could explain the reason they changed their creative comparisons as an outcome of the History and Philosophy of Chemistry course. In the light of these results, it can be said that the History and Philosophy of Chemistry course may help prospective chemistry teachers in their perceptions about both chemistry and the chemist and may add depth to their knowledge.

Abstract (sommario):
The vital necessity of descriptive geometry and graphic study by students which are training in the specialties of chemist and chemistry technologist is shown. It is concluded that any engineering and scientific creativity in modern chemistry as the science of materials, structural chemistry and chemical dynamics of molecular systems’ interaction process is impossible without the foundations of descriptive geometry, which forms and develops the human spatial thinking. The discovery of conformational transitions in molecules and, in the future, conformational analysis, has predetermined the broad use of descriptive geometry methods in the chemical science. The modern chemistry’s state analysis is leading to conclusion that at present time the descriptive geometry is needed in the educational program of modern chemist and chemistry technologist.

Abstract (sommario):
For various reasons, some of them linked to the evolution of the historiography of Chemistry, many recognized and important chemists in their time – and in ours, because of the legacy they left – are relegated to some degree of oblivion. One of these chemists, dead just over 200 years ago, is Martin Heinrich Klaproth (1743-1817), a key figure in the transition from phlogiston theory to Lavoisier’s new chemistry and one of the creators of modern analytical chemistry, an empiricist who discovered many elements and polymorphism, author of remarkable chemical and mineralogical analyses and creator of archaeometry. This article presents the life, training and scientific production of a great, but less remembered, chemist, crossing the frontiers of Chemistry in many cases.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A comparison between the figures of Levi and Mendeleev is proposed, based on their peculiar ways of conceiving their professional role of chemist, their life experiences, their achievements and their thought. The Weltanschauung of these two figures, despite their having lived in distinct historical periods and their belonging to distinct cultures, was deeply influenced by the fact of being chemists: chemistry was – for both of them – a tool for interpreting the world around them and acting effectively in it. The chemistry Levi talks about in his writings is not just a narrative pretext: it is part of his vision of the world and a means of survival in the hellish context of the extermination camp. Similarly, Mendeleev’s idea of chemistry was always related to the life context and the human condition: this explains his pedagogical concerns and the attention payed to social, economic and cultural issues typical of his time. Both Levi and Mendeleev were chemists for whom chemistry was a means of civil engagement. Their writings show that chemistry was a source of inspiration for their ethics.

AbstractThis short review describes the assistance of click chemistry in the chemical modification of glycosaminoglycans. Through an alkyne-azide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, the chemically and physiologically stable triazole unit connects glycosaminoglycans with other labelled or attached functionalities. The synthesized glycosaminoglycan (GAG) conjugates act as drug carriers, forming hydrogels or nanohydrogels for localized drug delivery or injectable GAGs and so on. These are used in research on antithrombotic agents, protein binding, and hepatocyte growth factors, as well as in mechanistic studies of glycosaminoglycans biosynthesis and wound healing.1 Introduction2 Synthetic Modification of GAGS3 Click Chemistry4 Modification of GAGS Applying Click Chemistry5 Conclusions6 Abbreviations

Abstract (sommario):
The isocyano group is the structurally most compact bioorthogonal group known. It reacts with tetrazines under physiological conditions and has great potential for widespread use in the biosciences. In this account, we highlight the unique properties of the isocyano group as a bioorthogonal functionality. Protecting group chemistry based on the reaction of isonitriles and tetrazines that allows releasing payloads is a particular focus of the article. We further discuss the atypical steric attractions that take place in the transition state of the reaction between isonitriles and tetrazines, which result in an increase in the rate of the reaction with steric bulk of the tetrazine substituents. These findings will open up new possibilities in bioorthogonal chemistry where reactivity and stability are simultaneously desired.1 Introduction2 The Isocyano Group: A Structurally Compact Group for Bioorthogonal Chemistry3 Bioorthogonal Protecting Group Chemistry4 Steric Attractions in the Transition State Accelerate the Cycloaddition of Isonitriles and Tetrazines5 Reactions of Tetrazines and Isonitriles are Compatible with Biomolecules and Living Organisms6 Conclusions

Abstract (sommario):
Physical Chemistry's birth was fraught with controversy, a controversy about electrolyte solution chemistry which has much to say about how scientific knowledge originates, matures, and responds to challenges. This has direct implications for the way our students are educated in physical chemistry in particular and science in general. The incursion of physical measurement and mathematics into a discipline which had been largely defined within a laboratory of smells, bangs, and colours was equivalent to the admission into chemistry of the worship of false gods according to one chemist. The controversy can be classified as a battle betweendissociationistson the one hand andassociationistson the other; between theEuropeanson the one hand and theBritishon the other; between theionistson the one hand and thehydrationistson the other. Such strong contrasts set the ideal atmosphere for the development of argumentation skills. The fact that a compromise position, first elaborated in the late 19th century, has recently enhanced the explanatory capacity for electrolyte solution chemistry is challenging but one in which students can participate to their benefit.

Jiang, Jian. "Studies of supramolecular chemistry through Schiff-base chemistry". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27809.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes the synthesis, characterization, and host-guest studies of a series of Schiff-base macrocycles. New [2+2] Schiff-base macrocycles were prepared by Schiff-base condensation. These macrocycles were shown to be wide-mouthed supramolecular hosts that can include organic cations such as pyridinium, paraquat and ammonium derivatives. A new kind of donor-acceptor-donor 3-in-1 complex was obtained in solution by combining macrocycle, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) and tetrathiafulvalene. Variations of these [2+2] Schiff-base macrocycles were prepared by modifying the substituents of the diformyl diol unit. In this way naphthalene-based macrocycles that undergo keto-enamine tautomerization were synthesized. These macrocycles can also combine with organic cations to form host-guest complex. The naphthalene-based [2+2] macrocycles can form lyotropic liquid crystals in chloroform and 1,2-dichloroethane. From the polarizing optical microscopy, it is proposed that the mesophases are lyotropic nematic liquid crystals based on a bilayer structure. A further study of these macrocycles shows that the host-guest complex can also form a lyotropic liquid crystalline phase. Covalently-linked macrocycles with isosceles triangle shapes were prepared by Schiff-base condensation. The molecular isosceles triangles proved to also be supramolecular hosts for pyridinium and ammonium cations, based on ¹H NMR, 2D-ROESY NMR, and mass spectrometry studies. In addition to the Schiff-base macrocycles, conjugated Schiff-base containing oligomers were synthesized via Gilch polymerization methods. The oligomers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. For further proof of the oligomeric structure, a model compound was prepared by the Wittig reaction.

Abstract (sommario):
Numerous enzymatic reactions are controlled by the chemistry of metallic ions. This dissertation investigates the electronic properties of three transition metal (copper, chromium, and nickel) complexes and describes modeling studies performed on glutathione synthetase. (1) Copper nitrene complexes were computationally characterized, as these complexes have yet to be experimentally isolated. (2) Multireference calculations were carried out on a symmetric C2v chromium dimer derived from the crystal structure of the [(tBu3SiO)Cr(µ-OSitBu3)]2 complex. (3) The T-shaped geometry of a three-coordinate β-diketiminate nickel(I) complex with a CO ligand was compared and contrasted with isoelectronic and isosteric copper(II) complexes. (4) Glutathione synthetase (GS), an enzyme that belongs to the ATP-grasp superfamily, catalyzes the (Mg, ATP)-dependent biosynthesis of glutathione (GSH) from γ-glutamylcysteine and glycine. The free and reactant forms of human GS (wild-type and glycine mutants) were modeled computationally by employing molecular dynamics simulations, as these currently have not been structurally characterized.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis concerns the theoretical study of the low-energy interaction of antihydrogen atoms (¯H) with hydrogen molecules and antiprotons (p¯) with hydrogen molecular ions. Both systems are of interest to experiments currently under way at CERN aiming to trap and study antihydrogen atoms. To date limited work has been carried out on these systems. Only four papers on the ¯H-H2 system have been published and so far only semi-classical results have been published for p¯-H+ 2 . For both systems potential energy surfaces are constructed by fitting analytical functions to ab initio calculated energies. A combination of a neural network and suitable long-range asymptotic functions are used to fit the surfaces of both systems. The resulting surfaces are more accurate than those of previous work and should be useful for further studies. Quantum mechanical scattering calculations are carried out using the S-matrix Kohn variational method. It is shown that basis sets which are effective for normal chemical systems are not suitable for mixed matter/antimatter interactions. Instead, a basis set of multidimensional Gaussian functions, tailored to the potential, is used to converge the scattering calculations. For ¯H-H2 scattering the diatomic is approximated as a rigid rotor. Elastic and rotationally inelastic scattering calculations are presented. Hadronic annihilation calculations are also presented along with the first calculation of leptonic annihilation cross sections for this system. Scattering calculations for the p¯-H+ 2 system are carried out with approximations made to the potential. The strength of the interaction between the antiproton and hydrogen molecular ion, which at long range becomes Coulombic, requires large basis sets. The necessary modifications required to use the Kohn method with a Coulomb potential are discussed. A preliminary calculation of Pn-H elastic scattering is also carried out.

Fitchett, Christopher Mark. "Metallosupramolecular chemistry". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Chemistry, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/5964.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes the preparation and characterisation of a number of metallosupramolecular assemblies. Such species were constructed by the reaction of ligands based on nitrogen containing heterocycles with metal atoms. The coordinate bonds used to hold these species together provide a mixture of strength and lability that aids the formation of interesting structures. The twenty six ligands utilised for the formation of metallosupramolecular species can be divided into three types; rigid sym-biheterocycles, ligands with added flexibility, and chiral ligands for the formation of polymers. These investigations used a range of metal atoms to allow the examination of the metallosupramolecular chemistry of these ligands. The structure of forty three complexes was determined using single crystal X-ray crystallography. The complexes isolated and characterised had a diverse range of structures, with discrete and polymeric species formed. The rigid sym-biheterocycles gave mostly monomeric and oligomeric complexes, with two polymeric complexes also formed; all ligands failed to coordinate through all donor atoms. Ligands with added flexibility gave mostly one- and two- dimensional polymers, with discrete complexes such as M2L2 macrocycles and mononuclear structures also formed. The chiral ligands prepared using camphor gave a range of clural polymers, and in two cases these possessed directionality. The variety of metallosupramolecular assemblies synthesised exemplifies the structural complexity that may be formed using metal atoms and N-heterocyclic ligands as structural components for molecular construction.

Abstract (sommario):
The experience of the authors on the use of computers on teaching at the various levels of the graduation, in Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry, ranging from General Chemistry to Drug Design, passing through Computational Chemistry and other courses is presented. The capabilities of computers for revealing the microscopic, unseen, and hidden patterns at all levels of the graduation, and to show how computers are used in research on molecules, materials, and drugs, at higher levels of the graduation, are emphasized. The approach is based on simple ideas and concepts, practical laboratory work, motivational narratives, and clear feedback. New forms of clarifying complex ideas, sometimes presented in a “muddy” way, in particular for Computational Chemistry and Drug Design, are procured.

Abstract (sommario):
The long-term impacts of global upheaval unleashed by Covid-19 on economic, political, social configurations, trade, everyday life in general, and broader planetary sustainability issues are still unfolding and a full assessment will take some time. However, in the short term, the disruptive effects of the pandemic on health, education, and behaviors and on science and education have already manifested themselves profoundly – and the chemistry arena is also deeply affected. There will be ramifications for many facets of chemistry’s ambit, including how it repositions itself and how it is taught, researched, practiced, and resourced within the rapidly shifting post-Covid-19 contexts. The implications for chemistry are discussed hereunder three broad headings, relating to trends (a) within the field of knowledge transfer; (b) in knowledge application and translational research; and (c) affecting academic/professional life.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this article is to analyze the current trends in the use of the augmented reality in the chemistry education and to identify the promising areas for the introduction of AR-technologies to support the chemistry education in Ukrainian educational institutions. The article is aimed at solving such problems as: the generalization and analysis of the scientific researches results on the use of the augmented reality in the chemistry education, the characteristics of the modern AR-tools in the chemistry education and the forecasting of some possible areas of the development and improvement of the Ukrainian tools of the augmented reality in the chemistry education. The object of research is the augmented reality, and the subject is the use of the augmented reality in the chemistry learning. As a result of the study, it has been found that AR-technologies are actively used in the chemistry education and their effectiveness has been proven, but there are still no Ukrainian software products in this field. Frequently AR-technologies of the chemistry education are used for 3D visualization of the structure of atoms, molecules, crystalline lattices. The study has made it possible to conclude that there is a significant demand for the chemistry education with the augmented reality that is available via the mobile devices, and accordingly the need to develop the appropriate tools to support the chemistry education at schools and universities. The most promising thing is the development of methodological recommendations for the implementation of laboratory works, textbooks, popular scientific literature on chemistry with the use of the augmented reality technologies and the creation of the simulators for working with the chemical equipment and utensils using the augmented reality.
