Stroud, Brenda. "Charlotte Smith : political novelist". Thesis, Open University, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.552783.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a comprehensive, chronological and synoptic study of political thought in the eleven novels of Charlotte Smith (1749-1806), published between 1788 and 1802. It traces the ways in which Smith incorporates topics which were the subject of political debate in the period immediately following the outbreak of the French Revolution into the framework of the courtship novel, and demonstrates her engagement with what was being said and written by polemicists in response to events in both France and England. By examining each of Smith's novels in relation to a wide range of contemporary political writing, I show that she participated more continuously and closely in the political discourse of the 1790s than has been realised or documented. I also argue that her involvement with political discourse was an important factor in her development as an innovative and experimental novelist. As she questioned and challenged accepted political certainties, and was influenced by politically radical ideas, so her novels became increasingly experimental in form. Even in her pre-Revolutionary novels, Smith expressed dissatisfaction with the socio-political values endorsed by the conventions of courtship novels which commonly resolved with the heroine placed within a patriarchal family, married to a man of rank and living in an inherited landed property. The political battles of the 1790s were fought using topoi of patriarchal authority and patrilineal inheritance, which were seen by conservatives as vital to the preservation of the security and prosperity of the country. At a symbolic level these topoi mirrored the relationship between monarch and subject and the longevity and stability of constitution and state. Smith's political alignment with radical reformers meant that the safe resolutions of her earlier novels were modified or jettisoned as her courtship narratives were inflected by this discourse and became the forums for political debate.

Joiner, Sandra Carol. "Charlotte Mew: An Introduction". TopSCHOLAR®, 1989. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1717.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Charlotte Mew (1869-1928) published short stories, essays, and poetry between 1894 and the time of her death. She published a slim volume of poems in 1916, a few of which place her as one of the great English poets. Indeed, both Thomas Hardy and Virginia Woolf thought her one of the greatest living female poets. Mew is particularly interesting as a poet who was born in the Victorian period, published during the “decadent decade” of the nineties, throughout Edward’s reign, and well into the reign of George V. Although few of Mew’s poems are dated, there is a gradual yet continual change from her early work to her latest. In her work, Mew questions her relationship with God, nature and humanity. She asked questions asked by Emily Bronte, George Meredith, and Thomas Hardy. Like them, she was knowledgeable in the new science and believed in its results. She was a seeker for a workable philosophy on which to base her life, which she never fully found. It is both painful and fruitful to join her in her search through her works as she tries to come to terms with these issues.

Roberts, Bethan. "Charlotte Smith and the sonnet". Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2014. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2003520/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis considers the place of Charlotte Smith’s Elegiac Sonnets in the eighteenth-century sonnet revival. Smith is often credited with reviving the sonnet form, and has attracted attention as a ‘Romantic’ poet. This thesis seeks to rebalance the existing critical focus by locating Smith’s sonnets in their eighteenth-century context and by considering her engagement with tradition alongside her innovation and influence. It offers a new history and evaluation of the eighteenth-century sonnet, and locates Smith’s sonnets within it. It traces the expansion of Elegiac Sonnets through its multiple editions from 1784 to 1800, charting Smith’s changing approach to – and the interactions between – form, literary tradition and place. Thus, the thesis clarifies Smith’s real significance as a writer and her place in literary history.

Tolle, Andrew. "Charlotte Perkins Gilman: Naturalist Playwright". Thesis, University of North Texas, 2012. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc115172/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study explores Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s use of the dramatic form to challenge Herbert Spencer’s social Darwinism by offering feminist adaptations of Darwin’s theories of natural and sexual selection. As she does in her career-defining manifesto, Women & Economics (1898), Gilman in her lesser-known plays deploys her own brand of reform Darwinism to serve the feminist cause. Despite her absence in histories of modern drama, Gilman actively participated in the establishment and development of this literary, historical, and cultural movement. After situating Gilman in the context of nineteenth-century naturalist theater, this thesis examines two short dramatic dialogues she published in 1890, “The Quarrel,” and “Dame Nature Interviewed,” as well as two full-length plays, Interrupted (1909) and the Balsam Fir (1910). These plays demonstrate Gilman’s efforts to use the dramatic form in her early plays to “rehearse” for Women & Economics, and in her later drama, to “stage” the theories she presents in that book.

Hogan, Daniel Lewis. "Stream channel morphology : comparison of logged and unlogged watersheds in the Queen Charlotte Islands". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24685.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study compares the morphology of coastal, gravel-bed streams in two unlogged and two logged Queen Charlotte Islands watersheds. This comparison quantifies the influence of logging and related activities on channel morphology and, consequently, the fresh water physical habitat of salmonids. Further, it provides a basis upon which to determine habitat rehabilitation criteria for disturbed channels. Pools and riffles are detailed because: a) they reflect changes in sediment supply; b) they are important fish habitats, and; c) their general character has been documented in previously published literature allowing application of geomorphological results to habitat evaluation. Longitudinal profiles conducted over relatively long channel segments located within each watershed indicate that channels in watersheds logged to the channel banks by old techniques have reduced pool-to-pool spacings and increased riffle amplitudes and magnitudes. There is an increase in channel stored sediment resulting in proportionally larger riffles and smaller pools. This represents a reduction in available rearing habitat. No significant differences exist in pool and riffle characteristics between unlogged watersheds and those logged by contemporary techniques. In all cases the pool and riffle character differed from most previously published results. Results obtained from detailed study reaches located within each channel segment show that large organic debris is a controlling factor influencing the morphology of these streams. Based upon a comparison of reaches, it is concluded that LOD characteristics are altered in the older logged channels. This includes a shift in the size distribution, with smaller material being more prevalent. Orientation of this material is also altered; more LOD is lying parallel to the flow direction, as opposed to the more common diagonal orientation found in unlogged channels. This shift in orientation is responsible for a reduction in channel width and depth variability, reduced sediment texture, fewer cut banks, smaller pool areas and decreased channel stability. This results in reduced habitat diversity and quality. No morphological differences were detected between unlogged and recently logged reaches. The architecture of unlogged channels can be duplicated to rehabilitate disturbed streams. Pool and riffle sequences should be spaced approximately 2½ channel widths apart and riffle magnitudes should average 0.013 m/m. LOD should play a major role in rehabilitation. Long pieces of debris should be placed either diagonally across the channel to increase depth and width variability and to store sediment or parallel to the flow if width is to be reduced. Diversity can be increased by placing large root wads to produce small scour holes. Only small debris steps, accounting for approximately 10% of the overall change in elevation should be used. This comparative study of channel morphology emphasizes the importance of critically evaluating basin morphometric properties and the role of LOD orientation. Further, it indicates that previous studies reporting average values and neglecting LOD provide insufficient detail to quantify fish habitat.

Abstract (sommario):

Paris 10, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987PA100116.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Charlotte Brontë, withdrawn in the dreary "moors" of Yorkshire, tries to harmonize her characters and their background so as to give a keener perception of their isolation. The heroines especially, seek a form of integration by their fusion with the cosmos; this very personal approach brings out all the aspects of consciousness: emotions, passions and sufferings thus gain a greater suggestive force through the transforming power of imagination. There are, in charlotte Brontë's literary expression, two contradictory aspirations: at the same time a strong desire and a fear of solitude; the guest for a balance between these antinomic tendencies creates a neurosis that can only be cured by love and friendship. The androgynous aspect of the brontean characters reveals women writers' malaise and solitude in the literary world of the time. What Charlotte Brontë shows (and sometimes exposes) is single women's predicament and unbearable isolation in the victorian era: the heroines must struggle against prejudice and their fight increases their solitude; these women stifle their desires and weaknesses so as to overcome the obstacles of existence. The brontean characters perform a pilgrimage which brings them to a better knowledge of their inner self; they achieve a form of wisdom and fulfilment after they have met their "alter ego" who can understand them and communicate with them

Cassell, Cara MaryJo. "The "Infernal World": Imagination in Charlotte Brontë's Four Novels". Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/14.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
If you knew my thoughts; the dreams that absorb me; and the fiery imagination that at times eats me up and makes me feel Society as it is, wretchedly insipid you would pity and I dare say despise me. (C. Brontë, 10 May 1836) Before Charlotte Brontë wrote her first novel for publication, she admitted her mixed feelings about imagination. Brontë’s letter shows that she feared both pity and condemnation. She struggled to attend to the imaginative world that brought her pleasure and to fulfill her duties in the real world so as to avoid its contempt. Brontë’s early correspondence attests to her engrossment with the Angrian world she created in childhood. She referred to this world as the “infernal world” and to imagination as “fiery,” showing the intensity and potential destructiveness of creativity. Society did not draw Brontë the way that the imagined world did, and in each of Brontë’s four mature novels, she recreated the tricky navigation between the desirable imagined world and the necessary real world. Each protagonist resolves the struggle differently, with some protagonists achieving more success in society than others. The introduction of this dissertation provides critical and biographical background on Brontë’s juxtaposition of imagination/desire and reason/duty. Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar’s The Madwoman in the Attic supplies the basis for understanding the ways that the protagonists express imagination, and John Kucich’s Repression in Victorian Fiction defines the purposefulness of repression. The four middle chapters examine imagination’s manifestations and purposes for the protagonists. The final chapter discusses how the tension caused by the competing desires to express and repress imagination distinguishes Brontë’s style.

Shave, Anne Elise. "Education in the novels of Anne and Charlotte Brontë". Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/7116.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Charlotte and Anne Bronte were both educators and it is not surprising that education plays a prominent part in their fiction. It is more surprising that students and educators, who presumably share an interest in the processes and purposes of education, have not attempted, in previous studies, to provide a comprehensive coverage of the Brontes' approach to educational issues or to examine the function of teaching and learning interactions within their novels. My thesis traverses this relatively unexplored territory. My argument is divided into six parts. First, I outline some of the educational issues of particular significance at the time the Bronte sisters were writing, including school conditions, content of curricula for girls and boys, and "the governess problem". In chapter two I consider the authors' responses to these contemporary issues and raise points of contrast between Anne and Charlotte's approaches to similar subjects. Anne's moral emphasis and desire to affect change is compared with her sister's ambiguous and often contradictory attitudes towards social issues. Next, the close connection between education and power (and characters' exploitation of this feature of education) is explored from several perspectives. I comment on the imbalance of power between the sexes that educational differences contributed to in early-Victorian society and demonstrate that those most desirous of educational power in the Brontes' work are often the most oppressed. Chapters four and five examine the ways in which education contributes to the central heterosexual relationships in the novels, and focus most closely on Charlotte's preoccupation with relationships between masters and pupils. Finally I compare Anne and Charlotte's treatment of education in order to make some observations about their attitudes towards writing itself. I argue that the sisters' understandings of "truth" in fiction, the recurring conflict between reason and emotion in Charlotte's novels, and Anne's Christian world-view, contribute to the differing approaches to education - and, indeed, a vast number of other issues - within their fiction.

Sidhu, Amrita Kaur. "Subjectivity and haunting in the fiction of Charlotte Bronte". Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.271019.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis offers an exploration of subjectivity in the work of Charlotte Bronte, and conceives of her unique subjective voice in terms of the ghostly. This particular vision of subjectivity is characterized by certain moments of intensity in the fiction, in which very powerful emotions such as grief and loss are figured as a type of psychical haunting. It therefore seeks a new understanding of self-representation in Bronte's first-person novels, through a poetics of haunting and spectrality. These moments of psychic intensity will be analysed partly through the use of certain key psychoanalytic models, such as Freud's 'The Uncanny' and Abraham and Torok's theories of secrecy and 'hiding' in texts, and through the 'spectral' as it is explained by Terry Castle in The Female Thermometer. Beginning with a discussion of 'Charlotte Bronte's Gothic,' it demonstrates that psychical haunting creates a kind of gothic mode in Villette, one that underlies the ideas in the proceeding chapters. The spectral is then examined in Bronte's novels as a function of pseudoscientific readings that often involve looking or 'seeing'. The subject in this case is positioned as an observer, and demonstrates how seeing can often be a kind of hallucination or even a form of ghost-seeing. Additionally, subjectivity will be analysed in relation to letters in the novels-texts that have a highly personal yet ambiguous role. They often become symbols of the intense emotion that are integral to Bronte's subjective voice. This intensity will be mapped out in the final chapter through its recurrence in the work of various poets from the nineteenth century to the nineteen-seventies. In these works Bronte is a troublesome ghost or presence that, despite their efforts to contain, is haunting in its evocation of the difficulties of responding to, or of representing, subjectivity in literature.

Walton, Susan K. "Imagining men : Charlotte M. Yonge and mid-Victorian masculinities". Thesis, University of Hull, 2005. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8629.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis studies some of the writings of Charlotte Yonge as a route into the cultural concepts of masculinity in the mid-nineteenth century. In her many best-selling publications, both fiction and non-fiction, together with her editorial control of The Monthly Packet, Yonge provided imaginary constructions of manliness for numerous mid- Victorians. Her complex domestic stories demonstrated versions of appropriate behaviour by men and considered how such constructions of manliness might be engendered within families and communities. An examination of her work in an exact historical context sheds light on the standpoints, anxieties and beliefs of significant sections of Victorian society. Yonge had many connections with the armed services. The first chapter examines both the transformation within those parts of the army with which Yonge's family was associated and the gradual shift in attitudes to the military in wider society during the 1850s. A consideration of how brothers and sons might be fashioned into soldiers provides the theme of the second chapter. Yonge's early enthusiasm as reflected in Kenneth; or the Rearguard of the Grand Army (1850) is contrasted with the doubts apparent in The Young Stepmother (1861) set at the time of the Crimean War. The unhappy military experiences ofYonge's brother Julian are used to counterpoint her fictional representations. Chapter Three explores notions of fatherhood both within the family and the community, with patriarchy viewed in a more inclusive and positive role than its usual twenty-first century interpretation. Henrietta's Wish (1850) and Hopes and fears (1860) are examined in this light. The following chapter is devoted to Yonges role in the promotion of mission work as a virile, attractive occupation for educated men, a perfect combination of valour without violence, where men must be prepared to sacrifice their lives. Finally, an account of the difficulties of Yonge' s relationships with the historian E. A. Freeman is given to illuminate the gendered assumptions interwoven into different categories of history-writing from mid-century. This chapter concludes with a brief assessment of The Little Duke (1854).

Harris, Eleanor M. "The Episcopal congregation of Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh, 1794-1818". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/19991.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis reassesses the nature and importance of the Scottish Episcopal Church in Edinburgh and more widely. Based on a microstudy of one chapel community over a twenty-four year period, it addresses a series of questions of religion, identity, gender, culture and civic society in late Enlightenment Edinburgh, Scotland, and Britain, combining ecclesiastical, social and economic history. The study examines the congregation of Charlotte Episcopal Chapel, Rose Street, Edinburgh, from its foundation by English clergyman Daniel Sandford in 1794 to its move to the new Gothic chapel of St John's in 1818. Initially an independent chapel, Daniel Sandford's congregation joined the Scottish Episcopal Church in 1805 and the following year he was made Bishop of Edinburgh, although he contined to combine this role with that of rector to the chapel until his death in 1830. Methodologically, the thesis combines a detailed reassessment of Daniel Sandford's thought and ministry (Chapter Two) with a prosopographical study of 431 individuals connected with the congregation as officials or in the in the chapel registers (Chapter Three). Biography of the leader and prosopography of the community are brought to illuminate and enrich one another to understand the wealth and business networks of the congregation (Chapter Four) and their attitudes to politics, piety and gender (Chapter Five). The thesis argues that Daniel Sandford's Evangelical Episcopalianism was both original in Scotland, and one of the most successful in appealing to educated and influential members of Edinburgh society. The congregation, drawn largely from the newly-built West End of Edinburgh, were bourgeois and British in their composition. The core membership of privileged Scots, rooted in land and law, led, but were also challenged by and forced to adapt to a broad social spread who brought new wealth and influence into the West End through India and the consumer boom. The discussion opens up many avenues for further research including the connections between Scottish Episcopalianism and romanticism, the importance of India and social mobility within the consumer economy in the development of Edinburgh, and Scottish female intellectual culture and its engagement with religion and enlightenment. Understanding the role of enlightened, evangelical Episcopalianism, which is the contribution of this study, will form an important context for these enquiries.

Sauter, Martin. "Liesl Frank, Charlotte Dieterle and the European Film Fund". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3786/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Setting out to provide a definitive history of the European Film Fund (EFF), the purpose of this thesis is as follows: first, to draw attention to the many exile and refugee organisations by examining one of them, the EFF. As a study of a refugee organisation founded as a result of Nazism, my examination of the EFF not only fills an existing gap in film history as far as the EFF itself is concerned. Refugee organisations in general have received scant attention by exile scholars. By making one refugee organisation the focus of my inquiry, I am also highlighting the presence of women in the topic of exile as two women, Liesl Frank, wife of the writer Bruno Frank, and Charlotte Dieterle, wife of the director William Dieterle, were at the centre of the EFF. My investigation of this organisation demonstrates that women played a much larger role in exile and exile communities than history and literature have thus far accorded them. Additionally, I show how the political situation after 1933, including apathy by the international community, led to the founding of the EFF. Lastly, by shifting the focus away from figureheads of the émigré community to below-the-line film artists, technicians, theatre artists and so on, I foreground those refugees whose lives have hitherto been obscured by their more famous fellow émigrés.

Borie, Charlotte. "La poétique de l'intériorité chez Charlotte et Emily Brontë". Toulouse 2, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009TOU20041.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The development of identity and the process of self-possession is at the heart of Charlotte and Emily Brontë's writing. In Jane Eyre, Villette, Wuthering Heights and Emily Brontë's poetry, the reader follows the characters and personae (who are essentially female) through the life-voyage which brings them to get to know themselves, find their place in the world, inscribe themselves in it and transmit a vision of their interiority. The process of interiorisation consists in four phases. The first phase is about perception. The subjects discover the world and learn from this contact the necessity of searching for, and even recreating, the sense of belonging in order to gain happiness. Disappointed in the world, they withdraw into themselves, and the phase of feeling starts. The subjects shift from perception to intellection, shape their mental patterns, and try to recreate within themselves, virtually, the conditions of happiness. Imagination plays a major part in this process, but eventually, the inner shelter becomes a prison through the pathological expansion of interiority and the lack of reality. The third phase then begins, revolving around the idea of expression. The subjects, through speech, writing or painting, find ways to let out as much as frame their interiority. The result of their exteriorisation brings about the fourth phase, that of reception, during which intimate and competent readers carry on the process of the construction of identity
