Abstract (sommario):
Self-concept, discussed as a scholarly topic since the time of Socrates and Plato, is an important theoretical construct in education because self-concept is considered to be a desirable trait and a facilitator of positive future behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the characteristics of students enrolled in career and technical education (CTE) programs and students' self-concept scores as measured by specific subscales from the Self-Description Questionnaire (SDQ). A total of 196 male and 89 female secondary students (Grades 9-12) enrolled in arts, audio/video technology and communications cluster courses in North Central Texas school districts participated in the study. Student characteristic variables of interest were age, gender, CTE program enrollment, and participation in CTE. The self-concept subscales analyzed were General, Academic, Verbal, Math, and Problem Solving. A canonical correlation analysis was conducted using the four student characteristic variables as predictors of the five self-concept variables to evaluate the multivariate shared relationship between the two variable sets. The full model across all functions explained about 23% of the variance between the variable sets. Function 1 explained 15% of the shared variance and Function 2 explained 7% of the variance that remained. This study detected a relationship between specific student characteristics and self-concept as measured on certain domain-specific first-order factors. Gender and participation in CTE were found to be related to verbal self-concept and problem-solving self-concept. Results suggest that females in arts-based CTE programs have a higher verbal self-concept than their male counterparts; male students have a higher problem-solving self-concept. Results further suggest that students with a high level of participation in CTE also have high verbal and problem-solving self-concepts.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (D. Phil. Education) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2011
After the inception of the new government in 1994, a new curriculum was introduced, replacing the then existing curriculum. This new curriculum brought about challenges confronting the School Management Team (SMT) regarding its management and implementation. The changes required a paradigm shift and a proactive leadership approach by the SMT and particularly the principals of the Further Education and Training Schools (FET Schools). New policies were developed in respect of the management of this curriculum, which necessarily require the SMT to know and understand in order to be able to implement the curriculum. The aspect of training was also important in order for the SMT to be effective and efficient managers and implementers of the curriculum. The research study was therefore, about the investigation of the factors which influence the implementation of this curriculum known as the National Curriculum Statements (NCS) in the selected FET Schools in Motheo district. The literature in this study was informed and guided by both international and South African contexts and perspectives. The researcher in this study pursued a mixed mode approach. Quantitative investigation was conducted in selected FET schools within Motheo district specifically Bloemfontein, Thaba-Nchu and Botshabelo schools for deputy principals and Heads of the Departments (HOD) whilst qualitative, interviews were done with the principals. Data analysis was done through the development of categories and comparisons and contrasts were made. The data analysis also took into cognizance the visibility of contrary or alternative explanation for the findings. The investigation, therefore, discovered that most of the School Management Team particularly the principals were not trained on the National Curriculum Statement (NCS), and schools were also experiencing a shortage of resources. The recommendation was that the training for the SMT be an ongoing process as it will help with the successful and effective implementation of the NCS.

This study aims to understand the relationship between high school students' internet usage behaviors and cyberbullying. It explores how bullies and bystanders react to cyberbullying in the context of this growing generation of the Internet. This study was conducted using an online questionnaire survey given to students in a vocational high school in Central Taiwan. A total of 382 valid questionnaires were collected, and statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. The results of this study show that: (1) In the past three months, there is a significant difference in gender among high-school students using online platforms, with girls comprising the majority of social media platform usage. However, among bystanders, bullies, and victims, there are more boys than girls. (2) In the past three months, there is no statistically significant difference in the proportion of social media platforms most commonly used by high school students by grade year, but among bystanders, bullies, and victims, there is a statistically significant difference: the majority of bystanders are third year students, while first year students comprise the majority among bullies and victims compared to third year students. On the other hand, second year students comprise the majority of bullies and victims among online games. (3) In the past three months, no statistically significant difference was found between genders among bystanders, but a statistically significant difference was found between genders among bullies and victims - a majority of bullies and victims were male. (4) When a teenager sees someone being bullied on the Internet or is being bullied on the Internet, whether he or she will seek assistance is not correlated with their age.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of the vocational high school students’ English learning ability by applying K.K. phonetic symbols and Eclecticism combined with Peer Tutoring. Forty-four students in a private high school of central Taiwan was assigned as the experimental group. They had the English classes five times a week and Hospitality English & Conversation classes two times a week. The quantified and qualified analyses are used to examine on their English learning achievement and learning attitude. Following are the main findings of this study. First, after the experimental approach, the experimental group’s scores of the school academic competitions in English made a lot of progress in these 3 years. From ranked seventh in the school at the first semester’s test of 2006 upgraded to the fifth place at the second semester’s test, and maintained the second place from 2007 to 2008, their scores of the tests were not superior to the students in the Applied English Language Department only. Secondly, based on the English scores in the test of junior high school entrance test, the class is divided into four groups. They are high-level, middle-high-level, middle-low-level and low-level group. Both of their English learning achievement and learning attitude, the middle-high-level group shows the greatest progress among these four. Thirdly, as Peer Tutoring is one of the main subjects in the research, comparing the learning attitude with peer teachers and peer students, the result shows the scores in peer teachers are significantly higher than peer students’ , no matter in“liking”,“devoting”, “competency”and “total”. Furthermore, talk with students about K.K. phonetic symbols、Eclecticism and Peer Tutoring in the 「Focus Interview」, to know what are their opinions and how are these elements affect their English learning attitude? I think these suggestions and the results will help teachers to take as a reference when they teach.

This thesis explored the factors influencing the aspirations of graduates from construction departments at vocational high schools for further schooling and employment. Moreover, this study evaluated the feasibility of current curricula in construction departments at vocational high schools in Taiwan and the guidance provided to vocational high school graduates to successfully pursue further education or obtain employment, thereby achieving the goals of vocational education. Study subjects were vocational high school graduates from construction departments at vocational schools in central Taiwan. The research methods included a related literature review, a questionnaire survey, and data analysis. This study was conducted during the spring semester of 2006. Experimental results are as follows. 1.Most vocational high school graduates in central Taiwan were influenced by an overemphasis on obtaining a diploma. More than 80% of graduates pursue further education after graduation. The remaining students chose to obtain employment and were influenced by family circumstances and their economic situation. 2.This study determined that graduates who chose to pursue further education were affected by the following factors: “interest in construction field and related knowledge”; “parental expectations of advanced study and schooling”; “teacher encouragement for further education”; and, “a social tendency to overemphasize the value of a diploma.” The top five main principal factors listed by graduates “social tendency,” “economic condition,” “interest,” peer influence,” and “the rate of admission to schools”; among these factors, the percentages for “social tendency” and “interest” are the same. This finding indicated that vocational high school graduates who chose to pursue further education mostly care about the social tendency to overemphasize the value of a diploma and their personal interests. 3.This study found that vocational high school graduates who chose to get employment were influenced by the following factors: “gender”; “family economic situation”; “the arrangement of school curriculum and, “rate of employment.” The top five main factors listed by graduates were “social tendency,” “economic condition,” “interest,” “rate of employment,” and “influence of the same generation.” Among these factors, the percentages for “economic condition” and “rate of employment” were the same. This analytical result indicated that vocational high school graduates chose to get employment for two reasons: “economic conditions” and “rate of employment.” 4.Analytical results revealed vocational high school graduates in central Taiwan who chose to pursue further education showed great significances? in factors such as “parental occupations,” “academic performance,” and “number of certificates as qualified technicians.” Moreover, this study revealed that vocational high school graduates who chose to obtain employment showed great significances? in factors such as “parental occupations,” “academic performance,” and “number of certificates as qualified technicians.” 5.This study indicated that vocational high school graduates in central Taiwan who chose to pursue further education showed great significances? for the influential factors such as “family economic situation,” “social tendency to overemphasize the value of a diploma,” “weak job market for vocational high school graduates in the construction industry,” and “growing difficulty obtaining employment without at least a master’s degree.” However, this study also indicated that vocational high school graduates who chose obtain employment showed great significances? for the following influential factors: “parental employment in the construction field,” “good performance in construction-related courses,” and “social tendency to emphasize the value of work experience.” 6.This study indicated that most construction graduates from vocational high schools in central Taiwan choose their career paths based on numerous factors, of which “academic performance” and “paternal educational background” were most significant.

Abstract The study aims to explore the correlation among motivation, user behaviors and interpersonal relationship on using smart phones for students from the department of mechanical engineering at public technical senior high schools in central Taiwan. Data were collected from questionnaires. Tenth to twelfth graders from the department of mechanical engineering at 14 public technical senior high schools in central Taiwan were recruited to the study. Seven schools were randomly chosen from 14 public technical senior high schools. In each school, two intact classes consisting of 40 students were randomly chosen. Therefore, the estimated number of participants was 560. Questionnaires filled by 510 students were collected in the end. Data were then analyzed by descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, mean and standard deviation, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results showed that information collection and information sharing is positively correlated with on-line games for technical senior high school students from the department of mechanical engineering at public schools in central Taiwan. The interaction among the peer and coping with stress was not significantly correlated with video and pictures sharing. Furthermore, in terms of the effects of smart phones on interpersonal relationship, parent-child relationship is not significantly correlated with hours of using smart phones and years of using smart phones. Teacher-student relationship is negatively correlated with hours of using smart phones. Whereas, teacher-student relationship is not significantly correlated with years of using smart phones. In addition, relationship among the peer is positively correlated with hours of using smart phones and years of using smart phones. Interpersonal relationship on the Internet is also positively correlated with hours of using smart phones and years of using smart phones. Finally, the study has proposed several suggestions for students, parents, teachers and also for future study.

The study compared the English learning magazines in five aspects: word level, readability, speech rate, activity, and package. It was anticipated that the results of the study could serve as the reference for learners and teachers to select appropriate learning materials and for magazine editors to adjust the editing focuses. Widely adopted in the public vocational high schools in central Taiwan, four English learning magazines, including two elementary-level magazines—Let’s Talk in English and A+ English, and two intermediate-level ones—English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine, were selected for data analyses. The main findings are as follows: 1. Word level—Analyzed by Web VP, Let’s Talk in English and A+ English have similar word distributions, while English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine have similar word distributions in four word frequency categories. In each magazine, about 80% of the words are the 2000 high-frequency words. There are more word types and academic words in the intermediate-level magazines than those in the elementary-level ones. Let’s Talk in English has each word repeated most often. As to the vocabulary lists, the intermediate-level magazines contain more words above 2000 high-frequency words than the elementary-level ones do. Not only the target-level words but also the words of the other levels are listed in the vocabulary lists of the four magazines. 2. Readability—Measured by the readability formulas in AceReader, English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine are at similar levels, and they are more difficult than Let’s Talk in English and A+ English. Let’s Talk in English is the easiest one. The texts in Let’s Talk in English are at consistent difficulty levels, while those in the other three magazines are not. The texts with dialogues are the easiest texts, and the texts with practice of translating Chinese into English are the most difficult ones. Besides, the readability of the four magazines is influenced more by long words than by long sentences according to the position of the points plotted on Fry’s Readability Graph. 3. Speech rate—For the four magazines, the speech rates of text reading are slower than those of instructional programs. With respect to the text reading, English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine have similar speech rates, which are faster than that of A+ English and Let’s Talk in English. Let’s Talk in English is at the slowest rate. With respect to the instructional program, A+ English and English 4U have similar speech rates, which are faster than that of Let’s Talk in English, and slower than that of Live Interactive English Magazine. The text reading of the four magazines and the instructional programs of Let’s Talk in English have their speech rates closer to 120 w.p.m., which, according to the related studies, is the proper rate for nonnative learners. 4. Activity—In the everyday lessons, Let’s Talk in English are totally composed of conversations. A+ English includes conversations and reading, while English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine include conversation, reading, and writing. The different proportions of conversation, reading, and writing show the emphasis that each magazine lays on its main content. Vocabulary list, vocabulary card, grammar, note, and Chinese translation commonly exist in all of the four magazines, while song, warm-up activity, follow-up activity, weekly test, simulated GEPT, and answer key only exist in certain magazines. 5. Package—CD, MP3, CD-ROM, radio program, website, weekly test, and school test formulating are contained in the package of each magazine. VCD and TV program are included only in Let’s Talk in English and A+ English.

Private senior high and vocational high schools have been under a lot of pressure for the last few years. Within Taiwan, declining birth rate, expansion of public high school education and economic depression cause problems for private schools. Taiwan’s accession to WTO leads to opening of new schools owned by foreigners, making it more difficult to recruit new students. Private schools need to be run like an enterprise to survive. In an enterprise, performance of organization will be affected when the organization behaves unethically towards stateholders. Therefore, I intend to work on the relationship between organization performance and ethical issues inside private high schools. This research is an exploratory study. According to related literature, I devised a framework to explore, first, the relationship between internal ethical issues and performance, and then, the relationship between external ethical issues and performance. I sent out questionnaires to 400 teachers in 20 private high schools, collecting 90.75% of those questionnaires. 87.75% of the 400 questionnaires are valid samples. I put the data from the survey through item analysis, validity analysis, and reliability analysis. Methods of analysis include factor analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis and One-Way ANOVA. Internal ethical issues include the following: relations between school administration and teacher, integrity of accounting and PTA relations, and teachers’ value and professionalism. I define public relations as external ethical issues. In conclusion, we find: 1. The more ethically private high schools behave, the better they perform. 2. The more ethically private high schools behave on internal ethical issues, the better they perform. 3. We cannot find a connection between external ethical issues and organization performance. 4. Among the issues of internal ethics, we find that teachers’ value and professionalism correspond most closely to organization performance.

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study is to inquire the influence of both learning motivation and behavior on the learning achievement of those students who are studying in Automobile Department of nine vocational senior high schools in central Taiwan. Totally, we surveyed 1,250 students, 1,143 of them returned the questionnaires. However, the valid returned questionnaires were 1,099; the valid return rate was 87.9%. Employed descriptive statistics and hierarchical multiple regression to analyze our data, we obtained the following five conclusions. Firstly, those students’ average extrinsic practicum learning motivation was higher than their intrinsic motivation. Their average learning motivation and behavior were above the medium level, besides, their mean learning achievement stayed around the medium level. Secondly, the factors that would significantly influence the students’ learning motivation were the relationship between parents and children, the interaction between instructors and students, students’ feeling towards their instructors in both teaching methods and attitude, the order of birth in the family, their career planning, father’s education attainment, father’s disciplinary methods at home, and the studying grade as well as studying in the public or private school. Thirdly, except the variable of father’s disciplinary methods at home, all variables significantly influenced on the students’ learning motivation also affected on the student’s learning behavior significantly. Additionally, we also found that variables, such as classmates’ interaction, parent’s expectation on student’s career, and learning motivation would influence the student’s learning behavior significantly. Fourthly, only the following variables had the significant impact on the student’s learning achievement: relationship between parents and children, the order of birth in the family, their career planning, studying in the public or private school, intensity of learning motivation, intrinsic learning motivation, and learning method. Finally, the total explaining amount of our learning achievement model was less than one fourth. According to the above conclusions, we made some concrete recommendations on vocational senior high schools, instructors, students’ parent, and further researchers.

This study surveyed the motivation and satisfaction of learning among students at Chemical Engineering department in Vocational High School. The relationship between school curricula, and training programs were discussed, and the results were also examined. The questionnaires went to the students from school southern to Taichung. The survey was done by China Petroleum Company. All the four hundred and twenty questionnaires were collected. Among them, three hundred and seventy-seven copies were valid. In this study, the SPSS package Chinese Version 12.0 was utilized for data processing. The result of each analysis reaching significance level of .05 with marked with an asterisk. The statistical methods used were: the number of distribution, mean, standard deviation, percentage, independent sample t test, one-way ANOVA analysis, Pearson correlation analysis. The conclusions are as follows: I、In all aspects of motivation, "the demand for future employment" has the most influence, while "individual interest" has the least influence. Concerning the demand for future employment, the leading facror goes to "participating in the training of technical subjects commissioned by the Skill Assess ment Project". II、"career planning" is on top of all the levels in learning satisfaction, and "curriculum design" is the lowest, followed by the lecturer teaching, learning attitude, learning outcomes, peer relationships, operating equipment, and learning environment. All various dimensions and overall learning satisfaction tends to be "satisfied". III、As for the first dimension of motivation in terms of “self-interest”, boys are higher than girls. Meanwhile, those who have received career counseling are more highly motivated than those who haven’t. Besides, those with strong willingness for qualification tests and excellent academic performances, especially those ranked among top 10 also show distinctly higher motivation.Second, in another dimension related to “self-growth,” we can also see that those with strong willingness for qualification tests and excellent academic performances, especially those ranked among top 10 tend to make more plans for the future. Third, in the “carreer choice and path” dimension, it is noteworthy that girls are higher than boys, along with those who have received career counseling, as well as those with strong willingness for qualification tests and excellent academic performances, especially those ranked among top 10. IV、In terms of peer relationship dimension, the students who received career counseling got higher learning satisfaction than those whose schools are located in Taichung. In view of operating the equipment dimension, the male students got higher satisfaction than the female students. In terms of curriculum design dimension, students whose schools are located in Taichung got the highest learning satisfaction. In view of learning efficiency dimension, the male students got higher learning satisfaction and students whose schools are situated in Changhua got the highest satisfaction. In view of learning attitude dimension, students whose grades are ranked among the top 30 percent of the class and those whose fathers are professional workers got the highest learning satisfaction. As for learning environment dimensions, the students whose fathers are not professional technicians got the highest learning satisfaction. V、There was a significant positive correlation between all the dimension of learning motivation and learning satisfaction. "Learners interest" is highly correlated with "learning effect" and "curriculum design". "Self-growth" is highly correlated with "learning attitude" and "leathers lecturing ". Learners Demand for jobs" is highly correlated with their "career planning" and "learning attitude" Based on the above conclusions, specific suggestions are made for the teachers learning, the school administration, and the training institutions.

The Transformation of Vocational High School to Comprehensive High School A Case Study Abstract In Taiwan, comprehensive high school system made its first debut in 1996 school year on the trial basis. Ten years later, for the first time in 2006 school year the number of schools which transformed to comprehensive high school was decreasing compared to previous school years. National Chia-Yi Senior Commercial Vocational School (CYVS), the case study school in this paper, was the only vocational school that was permitted to adopt comprehensive high school system in 2006 school year, which has its unique indicating meanings. This case study tries to analyze how a vocational high school made the necessary administrative adaptations, and responded to the consequent difficulties that they encountered in the process of transformation. By analyzing academic literature on comprehensive high school system and making a thorough analysis of relevant documents, records and questionnaire resulting from the transforming process, this study looks into the four aspects that CYVS faces in its transformation: 1. school structure responses to transformation and challenges; 2. multi-entering development designing and its challenges; 3. program exploration and practice and its challenges; 4. teaching staff adaptation and its challenges. The study comes up with the following findings based on the above four aspects: 1. school structure responses to transformation: a. designing a complete and well-thought-out strategy to build up consensus; b. transformation on a minimum basis and with caution; c. transforming administrative function with a view of promoting executive efficiency; d. promoting counselors’ function to make the best use of counseling resources; e. planning campus space by sharing resources and considering different offices’ needs; f. careful budget distribution and management to provide needed equipment and facilities; 2. multi-entering development designing and its challenges: a. realistic analysis of what cutting edges students have when deciding their future; b. maintaining the current excellent vocational program; c. advising the authorities concerned to make changes to increase comprehensive students’ access to universities; 3. program exploration and practice and its challenges: a. encouraging faculty to better themselves by putting students first; b. promoting program awareness to help students explore and choose their favorite program; c. changing recruiting strategies with an emphasis on self-promotion and marketing; d. making the choosing process of different programs as flexible as possible; e. inviting parents to get involved in promotion campaign; 4. teaching staff adaptation and its challenges: a. gradual adjustment of faculty and administrative personnel; b. encouraging faculty to have on the job training; c. listing needs for on the job training and providing necessary expense assistance; d. protecting teachers’ rights during transformation; e. using multi-evaluation method to guarantee excellent teaching quality; f. encouraging faculty to make up their own teaching materials; g. taking technical difficulties into consideration when making transformation; h. carrying out pre-program-selection process. In conclusion, this study offers some suggestion for the case study school, vocational schools applying for transformation, educational authorities and future studies. By using an administered questionnaire, the study comprised a purposive sample of 552 senior high school and vocational high school students from grades 2 and 3 in Hsin-Chu County. The study had two aims:(1)to understand campus violence victimization of senior high school and vocational high school students; and (2)to analyze important factors to predict campus victimization. The study found that (1) being physically pushed around and making indecent gestures are the most popular forms of campus violence among students; (2) campus violence is most likely to happen in classrooms when schoolmates are present at the scene; (3) most campus violence victims don’t seek help. Victims would tell friends if help is needed; (4) male, tall and strong, vocational school students, mothers working in professional jobs, poor teacher-student students relationships, poor academic achievement and wearing designer’ products to school are the most significant predictors of victimization on campus. Three suggestions are made to prevent the victimization of high school students. First, schools might consider ruling out the family-related factors since they are least important to victimization on campus violence. Second, teachers should provide more assistance to potential victims via encouraging better interpersonal relationships, especially with teachers and classmates. Finally, vocational high schools need to make more efforts to construct a safer learning environment for their students.

The comprehensive high school is one of the tremendous reforms in the post-secondary education of our country to withstand the shift of times. The Ministry of Education adopted the suggestions from the seventh meeting of National Education and started to work intensively on the experimental curriculum of the comprehensive high school in 1996. Therefore, take National Lungtan vocational senior high school as an example to explore this kind of transformation of the formal education system. The aim of this study was to take Lungtan vocational senior high school as an example, and used action research to investigate the process of performing the transform of the comprehensive high school, to find out the difficulties and problems, and to solve its related problems. The findings are as follows: After the comprehensive high school has become one of the formal education systems, for the case of National Lungtan Vocational Senior High School of transforming to the comprehensive high school, this really corresponds with the mainstreams of education. The suitable and best transforming model is for the case of National Lungtan Vocational Senior High School: Under negotiating in advance and getting the common consensus with the faculty in a formal meeting, there are some valuable experiences we got, as follows: (1)The difficulties and policies of curriculum design: (a) The change of teaching hours and the problems of arranging the curricula—to make the teachers who teach the vocational programs instruct the related subjects in order to meet the basic requirements. (b) According to the arrangement of the programs, it is necessary to divide the students into some groups so that it will meet the needs of students, parents, and the school. (2)The problems and solutions for the faculty: (a)Performing the plan of retirement will solve some problems of the faculty. (b)No sufficient teachers are in the academic subjects. To solve this problem, it is efficient to make use of resources around the school-community or hire more teachers from other schools. (c) It is important to solve the surplus for the teachers of professional and vocational subjects. For example, it will work out to make the teachers have advanced studies. (3)The plan and the way to handle the equipment: (a) Because there are no enough facilities to offer the current needs, increasing some professional classrooms reduces the deficiency. (b) The limitations of funds for operation. Thus, presenting a series of improving plans solves the insufficient problems. (c) Actively engaging in the related affairs or plans to get the funds and then to improve the equipment. According to the conclusions, there are some suggestions as follows: A. The strategies of transforming model for the case of National Lungtan Vocational Senior High School can provide some references for both the public and private high schools implementing the comprehensive high school. (1) The conductor’s leading style (especially the principal) will be the key to success in implementing the transforming model. (2) How to transform is a crucial question so it is necessary to have a complete discussions and arrangement before making decisions. (3) With the suitable transforming model, it will reduce the number of the opposite teachers. (4) The suitable and best transforming model for the case of National Lungtan Vocational Senior High School will be more competitive among schools. (5) It is better to tend to the direction of community-united comprehensive high school. B. How to continue to impel the project of comprehensive high school for the case of National Lungtan Vocational Senior High School in the future. (1) For those performing the comprehensive schools, it is essential to get funds for operation in order to enlarge staff’s allocation. (2) Schools should offer many opportunities of selecting classes and then students will have more room for developing their potential ability. Above all, it is better to adopt the middle curriculum. (3) Continue to advocate the ideas to parents and junior high school students. Meanwhile, pay attention to the evaluation for the performing process, and chase the common prospect. (4) Remain to explore the adjusting situation after graduating from the comprehensive high schools entering University.

Abstract (sommario):
This investigation attempts to create an environment that will foster the notion that the creation of an object is not merely a physical act but a mental journey. As architects, we are aware of the lack of separation between learning and making. Yet mainstream American education has long adhered to a practice of division of study and separation of disciplines. The result has been less than satisfactory. The building strives to mimic the journey from the unknown to the known and thus parallel the educational process. The method of exploration has been the construction of large scale models of technology. The design process has not taken the traditional form of architectural exploration of plan, elevation and section. Rather, the construction process has served as design process, and by questioning and examining the way objects are made and joined the building as a whole has been generated.

This study explored English learning motivation among Taiwanese vocational high school EFL students. One attempt of the study was to identify the motivational orientations. Another attempt was to investigate the relevance and characteristics of the integrative orientation and the instrumental orientation. The relationships among students’ motivational orientations, motivational intensity, and English academic achievement were also explored. A total of 328 commercial vocational high school students participated in the study. A Motivational Questionnaire was first developed and then administered to the participants. The questionnaire items were drawn from three sources: open-response questions, interviews with students, and a number of published questionnaires. The questionnaire contained three sections: Students’ Background Information, Motivational Orientations, and Motivational Intensity. The collected data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regressions by SPSS for Widows Version 13.0. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was further performed by using LISREL 8.5 to confirm the causal relationships between the Motivational Orientations and English Academic Achievement. Five factors were extracted from Motivational Orientations: Intrinsic Motivation, Sociocultural Orientation, Entertainment, Pragmatic Uses, and Good Academic Performance. Significant correlations were found between each extracted factor among Motivational Intensity and English Academic Achievement. Furthermore, results of the SEM provided strong support for the proposed model, suggesting a causal relationship between motivational orientations and achievement. Four other major findings are as follows. First, Pragmatic Uses and Good Academic Performance could be categorized into the subsystem of the instrumental orientation. The vocational high school students tended to learn English mainly for practical reasons. Second, Sociocultural Orientation was closely associated with integrative orientation. The integrative orientation in this context could be identified by two distinct dimensions: a general interest in the foreign people and cultures and a desire to be integrated into the target community. Third, Intrinsic Motivation was potentially a main motivator of the language learning. Fourth, the female students consistently demonstrated significantly stronger motivation than their male counterparts in Motivational Intensity, Intrinsic Motivation, Sociocultural Orientation, Pragmatic Uses, and Good Academic Performance.
