Abstract (sommario):
During the last decade, local celebrations of winter solstice on the 21st of December have increased all over Denmark. These events refer to the Old Norse ritual of celebrating the return of the light, and their appeal is very broad on a local community level. By presenting two cases of Danish winter solstice celebrations, I aim to unfold how we can understand these new ritualisations as non-religious rituals simultaneously contesting and supplementing the overarching seasonal celebration of Christmas. My material for this study is local newspaper sources that convey the public sphere on a municipality level. I analyse the development in solstice ritualisations over time from 1990 to 2020. Although different in location and content, similarities unite the new solstice celebrations: they emphasise the local community and the natural surroundings. My argument is that the winter solstice celebrations have grown out of a religiously diversified public sphere and should be understood as non-religious rituals in a secular context.

Abstract (sommario):
This attempt to inventory all 1,964 songs performed at the seventy Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian National Song Celebrations (1869 to 2014) identified twelve songs which are most representative of Song Celebrations tradition as a whole. These are songs which were remembered and repeated across diff erent epochs of Celebration history (Tsarist, Independence, Soviet, and Renewed Independence). Song Celebrations heritage is measurable, in retrospect. At any Song Celebration, the number of songs from previous Celebrations can be counted to assess if the concert is more or less heritage-oriented.

Abstract (sommario):
The childhood memories of most Turkish citizens are full of images of national holiday celebrations. Loudly recited heroic poems, enthusiastic folk dance performances, costume parades and school shows, anxious teachers, and involuntary laughter during the long, silent moments of commemoration-all are part of these images. A few years ago (in 1998), Turkey celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Republic, giving us an opportunity to rethink these remembrances as both collective and personal experiences, with all their political and social implications. As in any other country with a state-controlled educational system, the structure of these celebrations had been well established and consolidated over the years, having “an accumulative effect upon successive generations” (Ben-Amos 1994, p. 54). The formalism and the overemphasized nationalism of the celebrations, repeated over and over for years, eventually created a sense of alienation. Nevertheless, when the Islamist Welfare Party assumed power over the municipalities of Istanbul and Ankara in 1994, the revival of the national holiday celebrations was remarkable. Thus began a new approach to celebrating national holidays, with rock concerts, extensive TV coverage, and public interviews. The seventh-fifth anniversary celebrations further revived the national holidays, with contributions from state as well as nongovernmental organizations. After the Welfare Party's assumption of power, the celebration of national holidays symbolized support for the Republic's reforms and secularism, in opposition to rising Islamic fundamentalism.

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores the effects of Celebration activities, Celebration merchandises, surroundings, and history and culture on the experience attractiveness perceived by tourists, as well as tourists’ attitude and behavioral intention. Tourists who have taken part in any kind of Celebrations were treated as the sample population. The questionnaires were distributed in person upon convenience sampling, and 562 effective samples were retrieved. The results showed that Celebration activities, Celebration merchandises, surroundings, and history and culture have significant positive effects on the experience attractiveness perceived by tourists. Celebrations and culture also have a significant positive effect on tourists’ attitude. However, Celebration merchandises and surroundings have no significant effect on tourists’ attitude. Experience attractiveness has a significant positive effect on attitude and behavioral intention, suggesting that when Celebrations are more attractive to tourists, they feel more delighted, and have stronger behavioral intention.

Abstract (sommario):
The article discusses the question of celebrations of Poland’s Independence Day – November 11th. The tradition of celebrating state holidays in Polish schools dates back to the era of the National Education Commission, which in 1783 ordered official celebrations of the centenary of king John III’s victory over the Turks at Vienna. After 123 years of foreign subjugation, which broke the connection between the citizens and the state, Poland returned to the tradition of celebrating state holidays in schools. Several brochures with proposed event scripts, poems, and small plays were published in order to ensure the celebrations would be given an appropriate flair. “Płomyk”, a magazine for slightly older children, was also involved in the preparation for independence anniversary celebrations. The issue of celebrating state holidays in schools was also considered within teaching theory: on the one hand, they were considered very valuable educationally – particularly for instilling patriotic and civil virtues, on the other, it was remarked that the students were bored with the ceremonies.

Abstract (sommario):
In this contribution I attempt to understand the structure and aesthetic means of the national celebration, using a highly irresponsible method a mixture of prejudice, speculation and observation. From the general observations based on the archives of Television Slovenia and limited experience with state celebrations, I am discovering individual examples and elements of the expression of the state celebrations of the past year, when celebrations broke into the public domain exceptionally and in the form of a scandal. I am trying to answer the question of what makes a national celebration effective and what enabled the SDS party to effectively appropriate the form despite their low standard. Ultimately, I also speculate on the question of how this could be countered.

Abstract (sommario):
It is a special moment in the history of STS. With the young discipline transitioning into a not so-young-field-anymore, there is plenty of reason for celebrations: defining groups are celebrating remarkable anniversaries and individual careers are celebrated when founding figures retire. These celebrations are also excellent moments for reflections on pasts, presents and futures of STS and the place of STS in the wider world. In this conversation, Wiebe Bijker, recently subject of his own retirement celebration in Maastricht (Bijker 2017), shares his views on STS. We travel with him from the Netherlands to India, and briefly stop in Edinburgh at SSU where we find the origin of the SCOT abbreviation. On the way, we discuss Dutch activism, teaching, the institutionalization of STS, the emergence of international networks, and different roads STS can take. We end with an optimistic view towards a global future, while emphasizing the importance of the inclusion of history and the classics.

Abstract (sommario):
The triumph was the most prestigious accolade a politician and general could receive in republican Rome. After a brief review of the role played by the triumph in republican political culture, this article analyzes the severe limits Augustus placed on triumphal parades after 19 BC, which then became very rare celebrations. It is argued that Augustus aimed at and almost succeeded in eliminating traditional triumphal celebrations completely during his lifetime, by using a combination of refusing them for himself and his relatives and of rewarding his legates who fought under his auspices with ornamenta triumphalia and an honorific statue in the Forum of Augustus. Subsequently, the elimination of the triumph would have been one natural result of the limit placed on further imperial expansion recommended by Augustus in his will, a policy his successors chose not to follow. Tiberius, however, was unwilling to conform to this new order and retired from public life to Rhodes the year after celebrating a triumph in 7 BC, the first such celebration since 19 BC. Tiberius' two triumphs and the senate's repeated offers of further triumphs to Augustus himself represented a different vision of the role triumphal celebration should take in a restored res publica and an ongoing challenge to the princeps.

Abstract (sommario):
Holidays are special ceremonies that enable societies to come together around common values. The Republic was declared as the result of the meaningful struggle of the Turkish nation to establish a new and independent state. Two years after its establishment, it started to be celebrated as a national holiday on April 19, 1925. Republic Days, which were initially celebrated in certain centers, were celebrated in different cities over time. In the first years of the feast, the celebrations were held with intense participation in order to ensure the legitimacy of the new regime and to adopt it to the public. The tenth anniversary of the Republic was prepared by the commission within the framework of the law of celebration, and efforts were made to carry out the same plan by committees and delegations in all cities. In this research, the Republic Day celebrations in Sivas between the years 1934-1948 were tried to be examined in the light of archives and some local newspaper news. According to the information obtained, it was seen that the celebrations were planned and carried out according to the directives of the CHP General Secretariat, and after the celebration, it was reported from the provincial secretariat. Accordingly, it has been reported that the participation in the celebrations in Sivas is high. Celebration activities; city decorations, lighting of festive firecrackers, staging of theater works, realization of sports activities, organization of lantern processions, exhibitions of public houses, establishment of public rostrums and organization of Republic balls. It is noteworthy that in some years the celebrations are prepared and maintained for three days. Key words: national consciousness, national holiday, Sivas, Republic Day

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyses the royal proclamation of Ferdinand VI in Cusco (Peru) which took place on 23 September 1747, on the birthday of the king. A reconstruction of the celebration was possible thanks to two sources: the city chronicle written in the mid-eighteenth century by Diego de Esquivel y Navía and an occasional print containing a description of the ceremony by José Antonio Santander (1748). The article discusses three aspects of the presented celebrations. First of all, it presents the general context, i.e. the problem of festival celebrations related to the royal family as a part of the Spanish crown policy. Secondly, it details artistic issues related to the celebrations. It includes a description of the artistic setting with the features of occasional architecture and ephemeral painting. Finally, the article examines the local, social and political contexts of the celebrations, read as a manifestation of the city’s emancipation efforts based on the emphasis of Cusco’s antiquity and its rich imperial tradition in the Pre-Hispanic period.

This research uses qualitative methods with techniques such as observation and interviews. Unstructured interviews are independent interviews where the researcher does not use interview guidelines that have been arranged systematically and completely for data collection Sugiyono (2011: 233). The results of research in the field show that behind the traditions of Chinese New Year celebrations carried out by the Chinese ethnic community there are meanings contained in these traditions both from a cultural and religious perspective.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractOn the night of July 15, 2016, the Republic of Turkey experienced yet another military coup attempt. However, this attempt failed, mainly due to civilian protest and casualties. Their sacrifice, according to the Turkish state, led to the creation of a new national celebration in Turkey, the “Democracy and National Unity Day.” Following the growing interest of historians in the field of national celebrations, this paper examines the creation of this holiday. It argues that the AKP government used this new holiday to shape the Turkish collective national memory and to introduce a national celebration that does not revolve around the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who symbolizes the secular camp in Turkey, but rather around the Justice and Development Party government and its more traditional and religious ideology, in the guise of celebrating Turkish democracy.

Abstract (sommario):
The celebration of the day of patron saint of the local church is a custom that is widespread among Christians in various parts of the world. In the plain and mountain areas of the Romanian Banat region, this day is referred to as ruga (pl. ruge), which literally means “pray.” These customary events are local community participatory festivals in the sense that they include both active and passive participants, the former joining in the dancing, the latter sitting and watching whilst socialising with relatives and friends. Although these events are primarily held on fixed calendrical days according to the patron saint of a specific church, they are in most cases attended by representatives of the many ethnicities and religious confessions that live together in the Banat region. This paper examines saint’s day celebrations in Banat as one of the prime community events where music and dancing take place. It draws on the authors’ fieldwork undertaken at saint’s day celebrations in the Romanian Banat where they observed the similarities and differences in these events. Their research is supplemented by drawing on reports from local media on ruge, historical accounts, and conversations with locals. Their conclusion is that over time the concept of the celebration of ruge has been maintained though the precise details of the events have changed over time as these celebrations have been adapted to meet the needs of present- day communities while retaining their function as participatory community celebrations.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: One important form of sustainability is the continuation of culture and cultural practices. This study examined the case of Japanese Ohanami or cherry blossom festivals. Historically, Ohanami focused on the cherry blossom as a symbol of spring’s arrival, where communal aspects, consumption of sake and seasonal foods, painting or photography, and pilgrimages to sacred sites were used to celebrate the ephemeral aspects of blossoms, spring, and life. Methods: This study examines how cherry blossom festivals are celebrated and understood and how these celebrations are changing. Results: Current celebrations demonstrate several forces are changing this celebration. The changes in cherry blossom festivals are seen in four areas (bonding, cultural continuity, marketing exploitation, and cultural symbolism). Cherry blossom festivals are also observed overseas—at first glance this suggests its continuity, however, the ways in which Ohanami is observed raise concerns about the accuracy of this cultural practice. Conclusion: Ohanami celebrations are celebrated both in Japan and overseas, and although their practice continues, the nature of the cultural celebrations are changing.

Abstract (sommario):
In times of the Covid-19 pandemic, many congregations had to stop celebrating the Eucharist or find new ways to do so – one of these being online Eucharist services in synchronous and diachronous settings. The article describes developments in the Protestant Churches of Germany and shows that the interplay of theology and church practices is essential. On the background of the fundamental dialectics of absence and presence in (Christian) liturgy and Luther’s writings on the Lord’s Supper, the article proposes two axes that open up a ‘field’ of diverse ritual practices: community and gift. Many different ways of celebrating the Lord’s Supper seem to be possible in this field – also celebrations in synchronous digital settings (video conferences). The Covid-19 crisis is seen as a chance to rethink sacramental theology and ways of celebration – in the context of a permanent change of liturgical practices.

Abstract (sommario):
Focuses on the annual celebration at the 1st of July of the abolition of slavery in Suriname (1863). Author describes how Emancipation Day celebrations in Suriname have developed over time. He relates how in the earliest celebrations after 1863 Emancipation Day was used by the authorities, in collaboration with the Moravian Church, to discipline and control the formerly enslaved, and thus strengthen the colonial status quo. This was done by emphasizing the necessity of white guidance for the blacks' development, and by creating a "cult of gratitude" to God and the Dutch king. Around 1900 a developing consciousness among Afro-Surinamese, due to migrations to the US, began contesting the way of commemorating slavery and the abolition, including a wider sense of belonging to an African diaspora in the Americas. Since then a gradual process of partly secularization of the celebrations began. Further, the author outlines how the African diaspora- and black consciousness influences, often from the US, continued to transform the content and style of the celebrations, but also had a wider influence among Afro-Surinamers regarding their sense of pride and cultural identity, reflecting in the changed names for Afro-Surinamers. The July 1 celebrations increasingly became linked to African-Surinamese ethnicity, while it also became a folkloric, festive, and wider national event, until it became again more politically charged since the 1980s.

Abstract (sommario):
The celebrations related to the 70th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Stalin began well before their culmination, which was to take place on December 21, 1949. The communist authorities issued a special instruction which strictly regulated the course of these celebrations. Special party meetings were organized to celebrate the dictator. Young people gathered in workplaces, schools and youth organizations were also expected to participate in the celebrations. Furthermore, it was recommended to study the biography of Stalin and decorate public buildings with Polish and Soviet colours, as well as portraits of Stalin and related slogans. In Olsztyn, as in other Polish cities, the Provincial Committee for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Stalin was established, which included members of the political and administrative authorities, as well as representatives of the army, trade unions, social, scientific, creative and artistic organisations, and industry leaders. However, compared to other regions in the Olsztyn Voivodeship, the celebrations of the jubilee of the birth of Joseph Stalin had a much more modest dimension, mainly due to the typically agricultural character of the region, as well as the relatively small population of Warmia and Masuria at that time

As the celebrations were nationwide, the local administration prepared for it with special care, not ignoring the distinctive character of the population in the area. According to the governors, county chiefs and town mayors, the residents participated in the celebrations with sincere interest. They believed that the said participation signified their gratitude to the Romanovs for their work in the Caucasia. The celebrations were held without problems, despite the concern of the provincial police and international and interdenominational strife of various layers and groups of the population. At the same time, the celebrative traditions established in the imperial center were partially adjusted in accordance with local cultural specifics.

Abstract (sommario):
Cerimonial. Confrarias bracarenses. AbstractIn this article is our purpose to present and analyse one of the more important celebrative moment soft he confraternities of Braga in the XVIII century: their anniversaries. Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the process of managing and holding celebrations in 1913 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Romanov House on the example of the provincial cities of Barnaul and Biysk. The celebration was one of the key events in the prewar life of the Russian Empire. The anniversary date was positioned as an important state-patriotic event. The preparatory work for the upcoming event took several years. Special commissions, which included representatives of local authorities and the public, were established in provincial towns. The author notes that these commissions were engaged not only in drawing up a plan for holding festive celebrations on February 21, 1913, but also in perpetuating the memory of the anniversary date on the scale of their locality. For example, in Barnaul, the building of the city school was given the name "In memory of the 300th anniversary of Romanov House". The assignment of special scholarships in honor of anniversary events to students of local educational institutions was widely practiced. The success of the celebrations was based on the experience of the centenary of the Patriotic War (1912) and the joint efforts of the clergy, various departments and ministries. The celebration of the 300th anniversary of Romanov House was the last major solemn event of the Russian Empire.

Abstract (sommario):
In 2021, June 19 (Juneteenth) became a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people of African descent in the United States. Prior to Juneteenth gaining official status, January 1 (Emancipation Day) was the de facto national holiday on which African Americans celebrated the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of slavery. From 1863 until the late twentieth century, African Americans throughout the nation celebrated what the black-owned journal The Elevator called “the greatest event in the history of the Colored people of America.” While several scholarly works focus on Emancipation Day celebrations throughout the United States, these studies have largely ignored how black westerners celebrated what was essentially “independence day” for African Americans. This essay examines Emancipation Day celebrations in the African American communities of San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. Emancipation Day celebrations illustrate how black Californians in the state’s largest African American communities used ritualized celebration and public dialogue to construct their new civic identities as free black men and women. Emancipation Day celebrations provided black Californians opportunities to testify to their aspirations as members of the American polity, and to their vision of themselves as upholders of liberty and beacons of freedom in post–Civil War America. Black Californians forthrightly used public commemorations of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation to illustrate black community consciousness through the spirit of public festivals and civic celebrations, otherwise known as “public festive culture.” These public rituals did more than celebrate liberty: they legitimated black freedom and citizenship, honored the memory of Abraham Lincoln as God’s servant, and elaborated a political ethos powerful enough to unify African Americans as members of the American polity.

Abstract (sommario):
On a crisp fall day in April 1936, Delia Larrive Escudero was picking grapes for the family's table at the small vineyard her father kept at the back of their house when she received a visit from her brother, who bore good news. Her father had given his consent—she was only sixteen-years-old—for Delia to enter the first official Queen of the Grape Harvest (reina de la vendimia) competition, in the province of Mendoza, in western Argentina. She would represent Godoy Cruz, one of Mendoza's seventeen departments, each with its own particular terrain, from the lush creeks shaded by pine forests of Tunuyan to the vast barren valleys of clay soil of Tupungato. Like many others in the province, Delia was from an immigrant family. Over hundreds of years, immigrants—principally from Italy and Spain—had transformed the desert at the feet of the Andes into vineyards that bear a bounty of fruit to this day. Mendoza has been celebrating the harvest in one way or another since Spanish colonists, and Jesuits introduced grapes to Argentina (via Chile) in the late 1500s as a source for sweet Mass wine.

Abstract (sommario):
In the year of the Oberammergau Passion Play, with its reminder both of the long tradition of such celebrations and their danger of being subsumed into the ‘heritage industry’, it is instructive to be reminded that the best traditions can also be the most recent, because the freshest and most relevant to the needs to which they respond. Also in Bavaria, and virtually unnoticed by the tourist industry, a nativity celebration is held each Christmas, in a hillside stable to which the participating donkey knows its own way – a ‘living picture’, which began alongside a charitable market and an exhibition of cribs as part of one small community's seasonal celebrations. Its creator, Brother Stephan, talks here about the event to Walter Siegfried.

The association which proceeded its preparations rapidly in the Democratic Party era, organised several activities inspite of financial impossibilities. The celebration activities in which Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and President Celal Bayar didn’t attend were criticised rigorously by press because of the deficiencies of organizations and absence of high officials. On the other hand the absence of the president and the prime minister in the celebrations, was qualified as an example of common sense by the other part of the case, Greece. Abstract (sommario):
Position of the Polish Workersʼ Party on the celebration of Independence Day The history of the anniversary celebrations on 11 November reflects the complicated traditions of the nation and the Polish state. For years the celebrations were accompanied by numerous changes in the ideological, legal, political and ritual layer. Individual political and social formations as well as subsequent generations of Polish citizens celebrated the anniversary of regaining independence by assigning to it different ideological, political and axiological values. Ove the course of a hundred years, it has gained a different legal and political status. From the celebration of local military circles, then political, through national anniversaries, school ceremonies to the establishment of a public holiday. In the 21st century, the holiday is additionally used by various political forces. The main form of the celebration is the Independence March. During the march Polish patriotic and human values are presented. But it also becomes the grounds for publicizing various values and anti-values. International interest in the march is dictated by the propagation of sometimes anti-democratic slogans and the political situation in Poland and the EU. Various political forces sometimes try to use the Independence Day in a spectacular way for political purposes, for media coverage, for election fights with political opponents.

Abstract (sommario):
The article discusses the question of how Independence Day is celebrated in the new Balkan states, what semantic content these countries invest in it and how events of the past are reflected in the process of creating modern state and national traditions. The new states in the Balkans are rebuilding both internal relations within the country and the system of external relations. The celebration of Independence Day becomes a link between the promises of political leaders and the expectations and reactions of the citizens of a particular state to the annual evaluation of their independent existence. At the regional and international level, this celebration is a kind of demonstration of the validity of the chosen path of development. However, there are regions in the Balkans whose independence is controversial from the viewpoint of international law. Nevertheless, this does not prevent them from staging magnificent celebrations and receiving salutations from all over the world. This holiday, which should seemingly play a consolidating role, can in fact cause serious disagreements that call into question the country’s independence. Thus, even through legal proceedings, it is not possible to work out a clear criterion for celebrating this day.
