Testo completoInvestigations of the relationships between the gut microbiota and gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes are attracting growing interest by the scientific community. These studies have however been carried out mainly in humans and experimental animals, while knowledge of the make-up of the gut commensal microbiota in presence or absence of infection by parasitic nematodes in domestic animals is limited. In this study, we investigate the qualitative and quantitative impact that infections by a widespread parasite of cats (i.e. Toxocara cati) exert on the gut microbiota of feline hosts. The faecal microbiota of cats with patent infection by T. cati (= Tc+), as well as that of negative controls (= Tc-) was examined via high-throughput sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene, followed by bioinformatics and biostatistical analyses of sequence data. A total of 2,325,366 useable high-quality sequences were generated from the faecal samples analysed in this study and subjected to further bioinformatics analyses, which led to the identification of 128 OTUs and nine bacterial phyla, respectively. The phylum Firmicutes was predominant in all samples analysed (mean of 53.0%), followed by the phyla Proteobacteria (13.8%), Actinobacteria (13.7%) and Bacteroidetes (10.1%). Among others, bacteria of the order Lactobacillales, the family Enterococcaceae and genera Enterococcus and Dorea showed a trend towards increased abundance in Tc+ compared with Tc- samples, while no significant differences in OTU richness and diversity were recorded between Tc+ and Tcsamples (P = 0.485 and P = 0.581, respectively). However, Canonical Correlation and Redundancy Analyses were able to separate samples by infection status (P = 0.030 and P = 0.015, respectively), which suggests a correlation between the latter and the composition of the feline faecal microbiota.

This dissertation is the result of an ethnographic journey undertaken in three spiritual centers of Umbanda , located in different districts of Natal/RN. The aim of the study was to understand how the representations of exus (spirit category) are established in the studied religious environment. In order to study this, mythical narratives of songs and of people were analyzed. In addition, the incorporated spirit entities, loaded with codes and values, were possible to be read and understood. The present work was developed according to a theoretical and methodological approach that interprets culture as a constant construction process, with representations and significations. The empirical research focuses on the ethnographic observations and the narratives; providing the experimentation of the models of discursive dialogues and polyphony. It was observed that the studied empirical field is marked by the cult of the Jurema which influences the mythical construction of exus . Therefore, this study enabled a reflection on the meeting of notions of two distinct worlds ( Umbanda and Jurema ). This reflection is crucial to the understanding of the position that exus occupy in the local umbandista system

Testo completoToxocara canis and T. cati are parasitic nematodes of dogs and cats, transmitted by the ingestion of embryonated eggs, by the transmamary and transplacentary routes or by predation of paratenic hosts harboring third-stage larvae in their bodies. The transplacentary route occurs only in T. canis infection. Many parasites have mechanisms to change the host\'s behavior in order to ensure their transmission. Several researchers have demonstrated the occurrence of behavioral changes, using mice as a model of paratenic host for T. canis. However, there are no studies on the occurrence of changes in behavior of Rattus norvegicus experimentally infected with T. cati. The aims of this study were to investigate the distribution of T.cati larvae in R. norvegicus and determine the myotropic and neurotropic phases in the infection of this parasite, and to compare behavior of male and female rodents experimentally infected with either T. canis or T. cati, in the acute and chronic periods of infection. The variables measured were: anxiety, motor activity and muscle strength. Initially we used 21 rats aged eight weeks, infected with 300 eggs of T. cati. On days 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, 30 and 60 post-infection three animals were killed to count the larvae in the organs and muscle. In the second experiment 50 females and 50 males of R. norvegicus, with six to eight weeks of age were used. For each sex the animals were divided into three groups: T. canis - 20 rats infected with 300 eggs of T. canis, T.cati -20 rats infected with 300 eggs of T. cati and control - 10 rats infection free. On days 5, 15, 40 and 70 post-infection, the infected animals and control groups were submitted to evaluation of behavioral variables and determination of forepaws\' muscle strength. It was verified that the neurotropic phase of larvae occurred mainly in the 15th dpi and 30 dpi. Myotropic phase occurred during all experimental period, but especially 15th and 60th dpi. In regard to muscle strength in females, a significant difference in the three groups was observed only after 40th post-infection. In males there was significant difference among the three groups throughout the experiment. In the behavioral variables, only the female of the group infected with T. canis showed significant differences after 40th dpi when compared to control group. Males showed no significant differences in the performance evaluation. It can be concluded that T. cati migration behavior was different, R. norvegicus regardless of sex showed greater decrease in muscle strength when infected with T. cati and only infected females by T. canis showed behavioral changes remaining more time under conditions of exposure in the open field.

This study aims to show how craziness is represented in the Brazilian novels Quincas Borba (1891), by the Rio writer Machado de Assis, O louco do Cati (1942), by the writer Dyonélio Machado, from Rio Grande do Sul, and O Grande Mentecapto (1979), by Fernando Sabino. Considering these three narratives, located in a period that extends from the end of the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century, the objective is to investigate the strategies and narrative resources used by the narrators/authors to present the protagonists Rubião, Cati, and Geraldo Viramundo as crazy individuals, unsuited to the social reality that they encounter and, consequently, marginalized. Understanding the novel Quincas Borba, by Machado de Assis, as a formal and thematic matrix for the representation of craziness, this research also has the intention of highlighting the dialogue that this novel establishes with its successors O louco do Cati and O Grande Mentecapto, pointing out similarities and differences found among them. As a theoretical support, Michael Foucault’s studies on psychiatry and its relation to power and knowledge, as well as the critical fortune of each author and work discussed, contribute to this thesis. The results show that the three novels use elements typical of the Dionysian literary tradition, such as: the masquerading game of narrators, dialogism, polyphony, humor through the tragicomic narrative form, among other resources, especially in the case of Machado de Assis. Through the creation of a singular narrative form, each of the three works represents craziness so that it is capable of problematizing the lack of logic of discourses, institutions, politics, religiosity, psychiatric presuppositions and current social organization, at different times. In this trajectory of the Brazilian Literature, Machado de Assis was the one who gave the first and very significant steps, insofar as the protagonists’ craziness undresses the Brazilian social craziness and exposes the games of power concealed under human relations and under the sociabilities.

Testo completoThe pegmatite rocks in Rio Grande do Norte are responsible for much of the production of industrial minerals like quartz and feldspar. Quartz and feldspar are minerals from pegmatite which may occur in pockets with metric to centimetric dimensions or as millimetric to sub millimetric intergrowths. The correct physical liberation of the mineral of interest, in case of intergrowths, requires an appropriate particle size, acquired by size reduction operations. The method for treating mineral which has a high efficiency fines particles recovery is flotation. The main purpose of the present study is to evaluate the recovery of quartz and potassium feldspar using cationic diamine and quaternary ammonium salt as collectors by means of dissolved air flotation DAF. The tests were performed based on a central composite design 24, by which the influence of process variables was statistically verified: concentration of the quaternary ammonium salt and diamine collectors, pH and conditioning time. The efficiency of flotation was calculated from the removal of turbidity of the solution. Results of maximum flotation efficiency (60%) were found in the level curves, plotted in conditions of low concentrations of collectors (1,0 x 10-5 mol.L-1). These high flotation efficiencies were obtained when operating at pH 4 to 8 with conditioning time ranging from 3 to 5 minutes. Thus, the results showed that the process variables have played important roles in the dissolved air flotation process concerning the flotability of the minerals.
