Testo completoABASTRACT
There are many publications of various types, which mention Cadaqués architecture; those however are in most cases romantic and enthu¬siastic lectures of his architecture.
The matter, the author says, is more complicated, it is produced by a series of interactive relationships between the Cadaqués citizens, the economical and political power, the rules, laws and customs that this power produces, and his architecture is a result of this relationship.
In history, the economical development, his macro economy and his system, has periods with maximums and minimums, corresponding with the welfare and crisis moments, opposed them in the time also, in which ones, the architecture that has its own independence and autonomy, lost these qualities or there are not the determinants, the economical ones are the determinants in these moments.
These periods called "discontinuities" produce new architectonical types, the collective conscious and unconscious works in the direction of welfare and prosperity, the society in his totality works producing more and better, the economical resources contribute to produce bigger and better architectural objects, those ones, are the new types introduced in Cadaqués, like an example, and those built by sensitive artists could mean critical and avant-garde objects.
There are others which have not the same kind of work, their authors do not have the same sensibility, and those ones, inside a continued typological work are easily detectable, the do not understand all the architectonic tradition, and their work can not be considered as well integrated.
The architectural education should not forget this matter, the history must be present, and the types can be a way to introduce the students to the historical relationship without forgetting our modern culture, our XXth century belonging, and the future of our civilization, the science and technological progress, without loosing our collective memory, our legacy.
Testo completoThis doctoral thesis shows the evolution of Santander, Laredo, Castro Urdiales and San Vicente de la Barquera urban structure, bearing in mind the development in civil and religious architecture during Modern Age. The study, which includes XVI, XVII and first half of XVIII Century, completes a singled knowledge that until now existed about town planning and architecture of each of Cuatro Villas de la Costa, main urban centres in Cantabria during the Early Modern Age.It shows a global and comparative sight of Cuatro Villas, showing common and different elements which typified the evolution of their infrastructure and architecture, moving away from a stylistic and morphological analysis, and showing social-economical, political and cultural questions that could be found behind of each building or urban control.
Sequeira, Carneiro Marta.
The existing bibliography about the Marseilles Housing Unit by Le Corbusier - one of the most important housing projects of the 20th century -, explores primarily the study of the unit's apartments. However, Le Corbusier gives us some clues that make us believe that what exists on the top of the housing block has great relevance. In Les maternelles vous parlent, he focuses his observation on the roofs of the Marseilles and Rézé-les-Nantes' unités, and publishes, as in uvre complète, an unusual image, where the box-like volume that corresponds to the Marseilles Housing Unit appears only as a white stain, as a base whose only function and aim is to support the objects that are placed on its top. Like Le Corbusier when he drew this image, this dissertation presents the roof as the main object of the composition, a belvedere from which we gaze at the corbusian city, and the starting point from which we formulate the Question concerning the Gathering Place - the same interrogation that Le Corbusier formulated in the moment of the design of this exemplary roof terrace. This question is very relevant in our days, every time we try to define the idea of a gathering place that fits our time, and whenever we come across the difficulties that it implies.
It is commonly accepted that there is a "break with the past" in the genesis of the public places of Le Corbusier's cities, and that these meeting places imply a separation between past and present. This idea is based, on the one hand, by the misinformed interpretation of some of Le Corbusier's remarks - given that his statements, making use of expressions such as "machinist civilization", "the new spirit", "the architecture of tomorrow", cloud and obscure all of the links to the past -, and on the other hand, by the concealment of the paradigmatic references of his public places, caused by the blinding power of its innovative character.
However, we realize that, while sketching these places of communal representation, Le Corbusier recreates the magnificent and picturesque spatiality of the public places of Antiquity, places of representation and glorification of the community that were at the core of the foundation of our culture, and that constitute the essence of our tradition: the greek agora, and the roman forum. Through a refined historical sense but also through abstraction - which amounts to one of the most precious conquests of modern thought - and through the voluntary suspension of temporal compartmentalization, as well as the subsequent evolutionary explanations and cataloguing, Le Corbusier makes use of a synchronic vision of the public places of Antiquity, tying the past to the present, establishing intersections between them.
It were the drawings and models of the roof terrace of the Marseilles Housing Unit and other public places by Le Corbusier, that afforded me the clues, as well as his writings and the records of his travels and research, indication of the elements that he may have seen in the past and used while sketching. From then on, it was possible to follow a deductive path to reach the hypothesis and, simultaneously, its confirmation, to a conclusion that emerged from an uncompromised point of view over the object of study. After getting rid of a web of preconceived ideas, on which a biased idea of modernity was built, it is possible to demonstrate that the corbusian gathering place of the postwar period, does not establish a break with the historical past, but it is evidence of the unshakable continuity of human endeavour.

Testo completoThe purpose of this thesis is to research pre-Columbian architecture and the character it acquires in contemporary times. To achieve this, the Tambo Colorado archeological complex is used as a case study in order to test and investigate different forms of reading the architecture that emphasize experience and sense of place between architecture and its territory. Archeology and architecture are the two disciplines that provide valuable tools for the study of archeological sites. They both use analytical variables and study documentation to reach a formal and/or historical compression. However, to what extent can you generate a personal reading of these pre-existing spaces? Is it possible to use or inhabit them? In an attempt to answer these questions, the thesis proposes to complementary forms of approximation and appropriation of these preexisting spaces that may exist outside the realm of traditional architectural and archeological research. These complementary forms come from two artistic practices of the twentieth century, the first, the application of the concept of entropy proposed by Robert Smithson, the second the Situationist Derivation method. Entropy allows for the reading of the architectural object in another dimension of temporal assessment while the Derivation generates new discoveries on existing things from guidelines and instructions that look for a path directed by the senses. To apply these two practices or methods in the architectural field, they are directly transferred from the artistic field. This results in another way of reading the site. These methods aim to create mediation between the architecture, the place and the visitor that is replicated in a case-by-case basis, even beyond Tambo Colorado

Jovanovich, Lopes Caryl Eduardo.
Testo completoThis work is historical and deals with the relationship between Conpagnie Auxiliaire de Chemins de Fer au Brésil and the city of Santa Maria, in the urban and architectural aspects of the period of 1885, the year of the arrival of the railroad in the city, until 1920, the year of the take-over of the gaúcho railroad by the government of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The method used is based in the historical study of the processes of the territorial take-over of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and of the city of Santa Maria, of the chains of immigration, and their participation in the architecture and of the introduction of the railroad. The following researches the urban and architectural evolution of Santa Maria through evolving maps and photographs of the time, to establish through analysis and correlations what the influences of the railroad were on the urban expansion of the city and the architecture of Santa Maria.
Alexandrino, Pereira Morgado Carla Sofia.
1. 1860 | el fundamento de la metrópoli: las formas del agua y de la tierra eran en este período las más determinantes de la formación urbanística, resultando directamente de ellas la creación artificial que definitivamente marcó las evoluciones subsecuentes;
2. 1940 | la base infraestructural de la metrópoli: el territorio donde se estaban empezando a formar las pautas de la futura metrópoli de Lisboa se transforma a partir de las grandes líneas infraestructuradas, con particular incidencia para el ferrocarril y el puerto de Lisboa;
3. 1965 | el espacio máquina: empezó a formarse una conurbación pre-metropolitana así como la explotación intensiva del territorio, implicando una funcionalización del espacio expresada en las formas de máxima producción;
4. 1992 | una metrópoli de oportunidades: se estaba ante el primer estado realmente metropolitano cuando se asistió a una renovación de las oportunidades del suelo comparativamente al período anterior;
Absence is the contemporary protagonist in the metropolis. Nevertheless, no author has attempted to interpret a concrete metropolis from this point of view, examining the circumstances in which unoccupied spaces occur. It would be necessary to show that unoccupied spaces really determine the various stages of urban development that lead to an effectively metropolitan status and also to choose a metropolis where this premise is unquestionable. Such a premise is true of Lisbon, which is formed around a large unoccupied central space: the Tagus Estuary. The progress of the research determined a simply and extraordinarily flexibly structured approach.
Analysis of the metropolitan formation of Lisbon around the unoccupied is based on five significant moments in which three principles - water, land, and artificial creation - are used to identify morphologies of unoccupied spaces, using the same conceptual criteria, expressed according to identical cartographic criteria. Considering the motives and forms of occupation, as well as how they inter-relate with each other, the metropolis of Lisbon is not only described, but trends for future development are also outlined.
This reading matrix made it possible to establish an analytic criterion which was coherent at all stages of metropolitan development discussed here. In addition, it was possible to see how the three elements related to each other, characterising the territory as a whole, as well as how each element over time has adapted to the circumstances of the metropolitan formation itself:
6. 1860 | the founding of the metropolis: the shapes of water and land were the main factors determining formation, resulting directly in the artificial creation which definitively marked later development of the ways of occupying territory;
7. 1940 | the infrastructural base of the territory: the territory where the lines of development of the future metropolis of Lisbon were taking shape was transformed by large-scale infrastructures, particularly the railways and the port of Lisbon;
8. 1965 | the machine-space: a pre-metropolitan conurbation began to be formed, and territory began to be more intensively exploited, involving functionalisation of space expressed in maximum-productivity forms;
9. 1992 | a metropolis of opportunities: this was when Lisbon first achieved real metropolitan status, with renewal of land-use opportunities in comparison with the foregoing period;
10. 2001 | a supra-metropolitan transformation: insertion into larger networks has led to an apparently homogeneous reduction of unoccupied space, which contributes to an undifferentiated landscape and few urban reference-points.
Analysis of each period showed a territorial structure under construction, from its foundation to its current status as part of a supra-metropolitan formation. Each stage has been dealt with in a completely autonomous reading but the time-sequence explains the present configuration of the Lisbon metropolis around unoccupied spaces, and allows us to draw some conclusions concerning the trend of future development. Progressive knowledge of the formation of the metropolis has made it possible to describe and classify it at every stage, showing that unoccupied space is the essential determining factor in the territory of Lisbon.
This study is particularly interesting because it proposes an innovative interpretation of a concrete territory starting from a discussion of a space which remains unoccupied, based on a specific methodology.
The use of some GIS techniques applied to a specific territory also led to the production of new cartography on this theme, with potential future use, together with a new detailed cartographic archive on the territory under analysis. The methodology and conclusions may be used to interpret other metropolitan realities
