Abstract (sommario):
A lot of research is done in requirements engineering and testing but often the extensive literature is missing on defining good methods for linking functional requirements with test cases. Most of the delays occurring in the software development projects are because of incomplete or inaccurate functional requirements. The two main goals of our project are to achieve a successful software project by First, to design a template, which will merge functional requirements with test cases and second is to find the benefits of the aligning requirements to test cases. Changing, updating and tracing the requirements during the development of the project is not an easy task. The main reason for project failure is due to possibility of not fulfilling specified project requirements, so one way to solve this problem is to merge functional requirements with test cases. Thus removes the need of creating a separate requirements document, which will improve the traceability process between requirements and testing, thus leads to high quality and efficient development. The template helps us to drive a successful project by identifying the issues at an earlier stage of the development cycle.

Abstract (sommario):
Over the years, two models of freedom have emerged as competitors: the alternative-possibilities model, which states that acting freely consists (at least partly) in being able to do otherwise, and, more recently, the actual-sequence model, which states that acting freely is exclusively a function of the actual sequence of events issuing in our behavior. In general, a natural strategy when trying to decide between two models of a certain concept is to look for examples that support one model and undermine the other. Frankfurt-style cases have been used for this kind of purpose, to challenge the alternative-possibilities view and support the actual-sequence view. In this paper I examine the prospects of the counterparts of Frankfurt-style cases: “PAP-style” cases, or cases that could be used to support the alternative-possibilities view and challenge the actual-sequence view. I argue that there are no successful PAP-style cases.

Abstract (sommario):
Many exceptional situations arise during the execution of an application. When developing dependable software, the first step is to foresee these exceptional situations and document how the system should deal with them. This thesis outlines an approach that extends use case based requirements elicitation with ideas from the exception handling world. After defining the actors and the goals they pursue when interacting with the system, our approach leads a developer to systematically investigate all exceptional situations arising in the environment or in the system that change or fail user goals. Means are defined for detecting the occurrence of all exceptional situations, and the exceptional interaction between the actors and the system necessary to recover from such situations is described in handler use cases. To conclude the requirements phase, an extended UML use case diagram summarizes the standard use cases, exceptions, handlers and their relationships.

Abstract (sommario):
Automated tests have become the most sought after method of testing in today’s market. Automating systems is generally found to be cheaper, faster and more reliable than manually operating them. For this reason many companies decide to make the switch over to this inexpensive yet efficient way of testing, only to realize that their costs have in fact gone up. The reasons for this could be poor planning, automating too much too soon or even automating unnecessary parts of the system. This study takes a closer look at the effects of automating tests used on interlocking systems. A tool has been developed as a part of the automated tests at Bombardier. The main function of the tool is to speed up the testing process by automatically generating test cases rather than having a worker write them down. The aim of this paper is to present this recently developed tool and show how its use significantly reduces testing time, costs and workload compared to the manual tests used today.

Shih, Jau-Yung. "Learning from cases : retrieving cases in CAD systems based on design criteria". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/70193.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1991.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 87-91).
Architects usually regard case studies as an important way to study architecture. Cases stand for existing answers to real problems and provide resources for free interpretation. This thesis investigates encoding design knowledge into architectural design projects through formal computation, and retrieval of cases through satisfying criteria provided by designers. Knowledge in architectural design has been distinguished into domain knowledge and design knowledge [Schmitt et al 90]. Domain knowledge investigates precise rules in design, and design knowledge deals with more flexible or personal rules in aesthetics or spatial arrangement. The Retrieving Cases Based on Design Criteria (RCBDC) program proposed in this thesis is a prototype for a CAD system with Case-Based Reasoning to deal with design knowledge. This thesis concentrates on the issues of retrieval within CAD systems using Case-Based Reasoning. Two kinds of retrieval have been developed: Critical Retrieval retrieves cases that meet the assigned single design criteria. Designers can filter among these retrieved cases by adding more and more design criteria. General Retrieval calculates all the possible permutations among repeated elements, and retrieves cases that have spatial relationships that are most similar to the current project.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Yukos case is known for its unprecedented character and complexity as a Russian corporate, tax and money laundering case. It continues to raise political and legal problems, both domestically and internationally, and has already become a symbol of the contemporary Russian political regime. This dissertation analyses in detail the criminal and corporate aspects of the case, and focuses mainly on the reasons for, and the development and implications of the embezzlement and money laundering case, which is known as the backbone of the Yukos Affair. The thesis is primarily based on a comparative analysis of the international academic findings, case law and the Russian data on the case. The dissertation also discusses in detail the political nature of the Yukos Affair, whilst attempting to show the substantive aspects of case. The findings of the dissertation highlight new types of risk that result from the politically motivated application of Russian anti money laundering legislation to the activities of the international corporate groups, which has been enacted on the basis of the internationally recognised principles. The paper also describes the nexus between the corporate tax evasion schemes, which have been widely used in Russia, and money laundering risks for corporations. Such a situation creates potentially unavoidable criminal risks for all corporate groups that have functioned in Russia over the recent decade. The thesis shows that the corporations, which invest directly and indirectly in the Russian economy, must be aware of the politically driven corporate criminal risks, which quite commonly are not reflected in the corporate disclosure data, and remain unnoticed by the investors. The paper is unique as reflects the personal experiences of the author as the longterm leading lawyer to the Yukos group and as the consultant on the Yukos-related cases.

Soule, Ralph Thomas. "The Learning Experience of Tough Cases| A Descriptive Case Study". Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3740977.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

This qualitative, descriptive case study addressed the research question: How is learning experienced in tough cases aimed at accelerating expertise in a cognitively complex work environment? The time it takes to develop expertise in many professional domains is problematic for industrialized societies. As the baby boom generation transitions from the workforce, they are leaving behind a smaller, less experienced pool of workers to replace them. Accelerated expertise theorists have proposed tough cases as a way of speeding the development of expertise. Tough cases are rare situations that convey novel learning challenges by requiring learners to make plans and decisions in the face of ambiguous and interacting data (Klein and Hoffman, 1992). Expertise can be particularly difficult to develop in cognitively complex work environments. Cognitively complex work environments are “systems composed of psychological (cognitive), social, and technological elements, all embedded in a broader team, organizational, and social context” (Hoffman & Militello, 2008, p. 216). The study explored the learning process from the perspectives of learners, tough case leaders, and organizational leaders supporting the use of tough cases at the research site. Data were collected through observations of five tough cases and interviews before and after cases with participants and organizational leaders. Themes were inductively developed. The study had eight findings: 1) Tough cases are dynamic learning experiences that are interactive and concrete, while simultaneously confusing and disorienting; 2) the use of real events and complex problems grabs learner attention and interest; 3) making and defending quick decisions draw out learner beliefs and theories, stimulating focus and a tremendous sense of enthusiasm; 4) the practice of eliciting decisions by cold-calling puts learners on the spot, mimicking the stress of high stakes situations common to cognitively complex work environments; 5) role-playing throughout the case forces participation with the learning environment while reducing stress by making the learning experience more enjoyable and entertaining; 6) individual reflection and observation provide continual opportunities for re-examining decisions; 7) interaction and dialogue during role-play expose learners to other ways of thinking and lead to refinement of their mental models; and 8) hearing "the rest of the story" at the end of the case provides an opportunity for learner self-assessment and can build their confidence. The study concluded: (1) the tough case learning process incorporates both experiential and social cognitive learning in a single process; (2) the tough case learning process is substantially different from learning processes proposed in the expertise development literature; (3) tough case learning is a departure from processes described in the adult learning literature; and (4) tough case learning leverages everything considered foundational about adult learning. The study offered recommendations related to theory, practice, and future research.

Abstract (sommario):
When the United States Supreme Court approved the reinstatement of the death penalty in the United States in 1976, it did so based on the promise of new safeguards against comparative excessiveness and relative disproportionality resulting from jury sentencing in capital cases. As Justice Stevens noted in 2008, one of these safeguards – meaningful appellate review of death sentences – is, in practice, non-existent. This thesis examines the use of this purported safeguard by the Ohio Supreme Court, in the form of comparative proportionality review, to determine the degree to which Ohio capital cases are ‘relatively proportionate’ in the time period after the state adopted life without parole as a sentencing option in 1996. Specifically, this thesis employs two approaches to identifying ‘similar’ cases – the overall aggravation approach (through logistic regression analysis) and the fact specific approach – and then compares each death sentence to its group of ‘similar’ cases to determine whether it is relatively proportionate, given the death sentencing ratio of its comparable group. After establishing that at least forty per cent of Ohio cases were relatively disproportionate, the thesis argues that Ohio’s current approach violates the requirements of the Eighth Amendment. In particular, the Court’s failure to examine cases sentenced to life as part of its proportionality review and its use of the precedent-seeking approach has the outcome of ignoring death sentences that are comparatively excessive. Finally, the thesis concludes by offering a normative model by which Ohio can improve its administration of comparative proportionality review. The thesis advocates the use of a ‘purposive’ approach, defining ‘similarity’ on the basis of the intended purpose of punishment, and suggesting that just deserts retribution provides the best approach for determining ‘similarity’.

Bouldin, Shannon. "Verification of Use Cases". Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2011. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/384.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
40% of all project failures are the result of inadequate requirement analysis; the end results do not fit the customer's desires. To combat this problem, the Department of Defense has instituted a new acquisition process necessitating that the requirements aspect of the program be examined earlier. It is more imperative than ever that programs deliver the right system. Verification of Use Cases (VUC) is a solid way to increase the odds that the customer wants are met. VUC has four main components: tracking system, requirements attached to respective use case, test cases built from use cases, and the subsystem requirement tested against the system requirement. The tracking system is a way to ensure the requirements, use cases and test cases are all linked. Regardless of the document, or phase of the program, an alphanumeric system is used, as the unique ID, linking the requirements, use cases, and test cases together. The use case does not usually include the requirement, however with VUC it will. This way, regardless of the phase of the project or the personnel on the project, the use case can never be lost as it in the same document as the requirements. It is this document that is flowed down to the test engineers to use to build the test cases. Using the scenarios of the use cases, the test cases are built and stored in a matrix. Each scenario will have at least one, if not more, test cases associated with it. This results in thorough test cases for each use case and linked requirement, increasing the likelihood that no part of the requirement is overlooked. The last phase of VUC takes the subsystems requirements and tests them back to their parent system test case, which was built from its respective use cases. This ensures that each subsystem meets the customer's expectations, getting the system closer to fulfilling its expected role and on budget and on schedule.

Daly, Helen. "Vagueness and Borderline Cases". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/145428.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Vagueness is ubiquitous in natural language. It seems incompatible with classical, bivalent logic, which tells us that every statement is either true or false, and none is vaguely true. Yet we do manage to reason using vague natural language. In fact, the majority of our day-to-day reasoning involves vague terms and concepts. There is a puzzle here: how do we perform this remarkable feat of reasoning? I argue that vagueness is a kind of semantic indecision. In short, that means we cannot say exactly who is bald and who is not because we have never decided the precise meaning of the word 'bald'--there are some borderline cases in the middle, which might be bald or might not. That is a popular general strategy for addressing vagueness. Those who use it, however, do not often say what they mean by 'borderline case'. It is most frequently used in a loose way to refer to in-between items: those people who are neither clearly bald nor clearly not bald. But under that loose description, the notion of borderline cases is ambiguous, and some of its possible meanings create serious problems for semantic theories of vagueness. Here, I clarify the notion of a borderline case, so that borderline cases can be used profitably as a key element in a successful theory of vagueness. After carefully developing my account of borderline cases, I demonstrate its usefulness by proposing a theory of vagueness based upon it. My theory, vagueness as permission, explains how classical logic can be used to model even vague natural language.

李昕 e Xin Li. "Partnership in the redevelopment of urban villages in China: the cases in Shenzhen". Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2010. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47278808.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
With rapid urbanization and population growth in urban areas, urban development is necessary and urgent. However, with tight land supply from expropriating new farmland, redeveloping urban villages at central urban area would be full of potential. Basically, an urban village is the byproduct of rapid urbanization, with collective-owned non-agricultural use land surrounded by a state-owned urban area. Because of the particular land ownership structure in urban villages, conventional urban redevelopment methods are not suitable for the redevelopment of urban villages, public-private partnerships had been introduced into urban redevelopment to integrate the power and resources of private sector into the process of urban redevelopment with a legal contract, to form a collaboration between public and private sections, and to share the profits and benefits. A study on such partnerships in the redevelopment of urban villages could be instructive and enlightening for the future redevelopment of rural non-agricultural land in China. The major aim of the research is to discover the conditions under which partnerships for the redevelopment of urban villages could be established in China. The redevelopment of three urban villages in Shenzhen, namely the villages of Yunong, Gangxia and Huanggang, were thoroughly studied. A research framework has been established by examining the power relations of such partnerships and has been tailored to the scenario of redevelopment of urban village in China. The partnership synergy between local government, urban village communities and private developers, and role conflicts of each participants have been analyzed by considering the impact factors inherent in the institutional context of municipal government and the cultural context of urban villages in Shenzhen. These factors affect the composition, the process and the outcome of partnership in redevelopment of urban villages. The study found that because institutional support and land resource are exclusively and irreplaceably provided by the local government and the urban village, local government with systematic power is the primary partner who influences the partnership in redevelopment of urban villages the most. The local government arranges and executes the redevelopment timetable, decides the objective of redevelopment and devises rules of redistributing redevelopment profits. Under some conditions like better location, larger size and well-organization and efficient leadership, the secondary dominator namely village community becomes more important on the power balance of partnership. Private developer has no unique advantage in the partnership and could only be the follower of other two partners. Case studies from different cities with diversified institutional and cultural context are expected to be included into the future research areas.

Abstract (sommario):
On what is written of a psychoanalysis deals with, as the title itself hints, the (im)possibilities of transmitting what in a psychoanalytic experience, is in itself written. Is there a way of writing that allows to share the knowledge that is acquired during the process? To foreground and highlight the form, the mode of presenting that process was the starting point of this essay. After all, the means of transmission are included in what is being transmitted (up to a point where the form is the message). To write about writing, sometimes, is nothing but writing. Other than giving an account of the discontinuous experience of a psychoanalysis, this paper aims to demonstrate the written-effect (the written outcome) of my own analysis. A linear account of what happened there, illustrated by dialogs and anecdotes, would not sustain any real transmission of the effect a psychoanalysis has on anybody. Our goal is sharing with the reader the new knowledge that resulted from a singular working through, which due to its own peculiar construction demands, exacts from us many different formats. It is a work that results in a presentation that goes much further than a simple report. Work that invites the reader, through his own experience of reading, to the game of dealing with the labyrinths of language

Abstract (sommario):
The role of social networks in creating and sustaining migration flows, as well as in the adjustment and settlement of migrants, has long been recognized in migration studies. However, cross-fertilization between migration research and network approaches is still uncommon. Utilizing a mixed-method network approach, this study contributes in furthering the understanding of how migrant networks operate. Migrant networks are conceptualized as embedded in dynamic and changing systems, and shown as evolving depending on various contexts and situations. Examined are ego-centric networks of the 134 respondents (58 in London and 76 in New York) in three migration phases: before coming to London or New York; initial period of adjustment; and the current network as a result of the subsequent process of settlement in the place of destination (in total, 402 network maps). In particular, compared are three different occupational groups – nurses, domestics, and care workers. Conceptually dividing the migration process in three phases provided the opportunity to study network dynamics and networking practices, albeit retrospectively. Eliciting migrant networks was embedded within in-depth interviews using both electronic and paper-based network visualization. The findings suggest contrasting network composition in two global cities and across the three occupational groups. In New York, familial ties play an almost exclusive role in facilitating and supporting the movement of Filipino migrants. In London, most of the research participants relied on former employers (in the case of domestic workers) or recruitment agencies (in the case of nurses and care workers in institutional facilities) to facilitate their move. These differences in pre-migration networks then shaped subsequent network formations, adjustments, and settlement experiences. Findings also illustrate that although networks have supportive influence on facilitation of the move and post-migration settlement, familial and co-ethnic ties can also be exploitative to the newly-arrived and undocumented migrants. Situating the particular cases in macro-level context, the study explores how the narratives of attaining the good life through overseas work are interconnected to the need and demand for care labor in the US and the UK as well as the Philippine state-led marketization of high-quality workers as an export commodity.

Harrison, Antonia C. "Personality disorder : complex cases or difficult cases? : a question of placement in forensic services". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/29079/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explored whether patients in high security hospitals are more ‘Complex Cases’ or more ‘Difficult Cases’ than their counterparts in lower security settings. Herein, case complexity is associated with co-morbid diagnoses or clinical needs, whilst case difficulty refers to challenging, violent and aggressive behaviour. A systematic literature review examined institutional violence and aggression in different security settings within healthcare and prison environments. No clear differences were found in frequency of incidents between the security levels, and a suggestion that the severity of incidents were greatest in lower security had limited generalisability. The results were confounded by data incompatibility, meaning that it could not be concluded that higher security sites house the more ‘Difficult Cases’. An empirical research study examined differences in clinical complexity between personality disordered (PD) patients living in high and medium security units (MSUs). Statistical differences were found on several clinical and forensic variables between settings, including age at first conviction, and difficulties with affective instability, paranoia and depression (assessed with the Personality Assessment Inventory; PAI). This led to the development of a Model of a Complex Case of PD. The results suggested that higher security sites do treat a greater number of ‘Complex Cases’ of PD. Interestingly, they were also found to house a greater number of physically violent patients than the MSUs, ie. more ‘Difficult Cases’. A case study examined a high security PD patient, ‘Andrew’. His assessment, formulation and violence relapse prevention treatment were presented and discussed. It was identified that on admission Andrew was a match to the Model of a Complex Case of PD, and that a lowering of his PAI score profile over time reflected his treatment gains and lessening of his clinical difficulties. When preparing to transition to an MSU, Andrew could no longer be classified as complex, according to the Model. Finally a critique of the PAI psychometric was presented. The tool was assessed for reliability and validity as a measure of clinical psychopathologies, interaction styles and treatment needs, and was praised for its utility with PD patients. The findings from the thesis chapters were reviewed, and the application of the Model of a Complex Case of PD was also discussed. It was concluded that the high security hospital currently provides treatment services to more ‘Complex Cases’ of PD and more ‘Difficult Cases’ than the investigated medium security counterparts. Please note that Chapter 3, which details a confidential patient case study, has been redacted.

The aims of this study was to examine the perceived transition demands, resources, barriers, coping strategies, and consequences for two cases of transition, one successful and one unsuccessful transition – from junior to senior level in swimming. A qualitative study was executed on two swimmers from southern of Sweden. The instrument was a semi structured interview guide with the Sport Transition Career model as framework. The results showed that the athlete copes better with a balance between resources and demands exist and has a successful transition from junior to senior level. An unsuccessful transition were more likely to occur when the athlete had poor resources (internal and external), and the intervention with a therapist became ineffective. A further study is needed to find out if there are differences between the resources and the demands and the coping skills between female and male athletes.

Abstract (sommario):

The misuse case methodology is an approach for eliciting security requirements in software development projects. Misuse cases are an extension of the well-known use case methodology, and use the same basic types of diagrams and documentation forms. This thesis presents a study of the introduction and application of the misuse case methodology in a development team in the computer software industry. A qualitative research approach, with workshops and interviews has been applied to determine the usability and effectiveness of misuse cases. In addition, the practioners' perception of the method has been investigated, as this is believed to be an important factor for the adoption of the method in the team's engineering process. The results show that the method was easy to learn, easy to use and gave a good result compared to the time and resources used.

Abstract (sommario):
Requirements Engineering includes elicitation and analysis of system requirements. There are many techniques used for requirement elicitation. The use case approach is one such technique. This technique uses textual use cases written in a natural language for gathering requirements. Textual use cases are simple and easy to understand because they are written using free form text. But in order to automate requirements analysis, use cases need to be expressed using a restricted form of language according to a set of guidelines. An advantage of a restricted form of natural language is that it can be used to mechanically process use cases while still being understandable to end users. A use case specifies interactions between a system and its environment. Sometimes interactions need to be expressed between instances. In the existing restricted natural language syntaxes there is usually no distinction between entities and instances of entities. Another issue is that use cases are expressed in term of domain elements. In most of the cases, a domain model is created and updated manually in an ad hoc manner. One of the contributions of this thesis is a restricted natural language syntax for use cases, where instances are explicitly expressed. Another contribution is an approach to automate domain element extraction from use cases. Finally, we implemented our results as part of UCEd (Use Case Editor): a tool that supports use cases based requirements engineering.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines military performance in both urban and traditional non-urban environments. Cases used in this study are German operations on the Russian front, Israeli operations during the Yom Kippur War, and U.S. Marine operations in South Vietnam. This thesis establishes a framework for analysis consisting of six factors. These include environment, time, informational aspects of military operations, application of existing technology, intangible human factors, and the decisionmaking of both political and military leaders. Analysis of the three cases points to a number of common trends including, shortcomings when units enter in the urban environment. We note a lack of urban operations training, an increase in time to accomplish tasks, a resistance to operate at night, difficulty processing and communicating information, and micromanagement of city fighting by political and military leaders who typically refrain from such management during non-urban combat. Results of this study suggest a need to incorporate consideration of our six factors into current doctrine.

Abstract (sommario):
The average time necessary to add numbers by local parallel computation is directly related to the length of the longest carry propagation chain in the sum. The mean length of longest carry propagation chain when adding two independent uniform random n bit numbers is a well studied topic, and useful approximations as well as an exact expression for this value have been found. My thesis searches for similar formulas for mean length of the longest carry propagation chain in sums that arise when a random n-digit number is multiplied by a number of the form 1 + 2d. Letting Cn, d represent the desired mean, my thesis details how to find formulas for Cn,d using probability, generating functions and linear algebra arguments. I also find bounds on Cn,d to prove that Cn,d = log2 n + O(1), and show work towards finding an even more exact approximation for Cn,d.

Abstract (sommario):

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Violence against women is a serious offence. Emotional and physical abuse can happen to our daughters, sisters and wives. Rape is a form of violence against women. It violates a woman's privacy, dignity and it makes her feel as if she has lost control. The criminal justice system is there to protect the citizens of a country and this protection should extend to women when they have been violated. The criminal justice system has different structures, for example the courts, medical services and police services. The staff of the criminal justice process do not have an inherent duty to care about rape survivors but they can be trained to treat survivors with consideration and sympathy to counteract the effects of the rape and secondary victimization experienced by rape survivors. It is important that there are guidelines for the staff of the criminal justice system to assist them in rape cases. This thesis explores whether women experience secondary victimisation during court proceedings. To assess whether it occurs, court transcripts were analysed with a focus placed on the background of the court case and the verdicts of the judges. Findings indicate that secondary victimisation do occur during court cases. Rape survivors feel as if they are on trial and not the rapist. Survivors furthermore believe that they will have to live with the label that they had been raped and humiliated. The thesis recommends that officials of the criminal justice process should receive extensive training, and looks at the Sexual Offences Court in Wynberg as an example of an improved system for rape survivors. It is recommended that the procedures of the Sexual Offences Court should be evaluated on a regular basis to address secondary victimisation problems that may persist. Communication is very important during the rape trial. The rape survivor has to be informed about her case and about the location of the rapist at all times.

Abstract (sommario):
Case studies undeniably have great educational merits and provide real-world insight in a way that many textbooks do not, but can cases replace textbooks in the context of education? This literature review set out to answer this question and to determine in what ways case studies would have to change in order to be able to replace textbooks. Multiple sources, primarily existing case studies, were studied in order to determine what qualities of textbooks make them suitable for education and how these are reflected by case studies, and how well some case studies hold up to the standards of textbooks established. Several case studies were briefly reviewed with these criteria in mind, and the conclusion was drawn that while case studies certainly do have great educational significance and they do have their place in the classroom or lecture hall, as they are now they should not replace textbooks. It was concluded that despite their many strengths case studies need to put greater focus on teaching empirical theory as well as its practical applications in order to replace textbooks, but they should certainly continue to be used as literature in higher education.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Recently, Clostridium difficile has garnered both national and international attention, occurring with greater frequency, severity and resistance to standard treatments. In 2001, Clostridium difficile-associated disease, CDAD, became epidemic and its rate doubled from 2000 to 2003. As a substantial cause of healthcare-associated morbidity, CDAD is no longer just a pharmacotherapy nuisance. Specifically, the objectives of this research are to determine the incidence of both primary and secondary cases of CDAD among patients in the UHC database, determine how many primary cases had previous admissions with secondary cases of CDAD, and determine how many primary cases go on to be readmitted as primary or secondary cases. Methods: This cross-sectional study used the dataset from the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) covering the first quarter of 2002 through the second quarter of 2006, to identify the incidence of primary and secondary CDAD within hospitals participating in the UHC's Clinical Resource Manager (CRM) program. The UHC-CRM database was used to provide epidemiologic data in regards to CDAD cases, hospital-wide variables and patient characteristics. The data was analyzed using SAS statistical software. Results: During the time period studied, a total of 17,636 CDAD cases were identified out of 2,805,901 total hospital discharges. Of those, 80.4% or 14,178 fit the definition of primary with 3,454 cases labeled as secondary. The mean discharge rate of primary CDAD cases, per 1,000 adult discharges among CRM-participating hospitals per quarter, ranged from 3.14 (SD 2.33) to 6.72 (SD 4.0). The mean incidence of secondary CDAD per 1,000 adult discharges among CRM-participating hospitals per quarter, ranged from 0.79 (SD 0.74) to 1.59 (SD 0.86). The mean discharge rate of all CDAD cases, per 1,000 (adult discharges) among CRM-participating hospitals per quarter, ranged from 3.93 (SD 3.04) to 8.11 (SD 4.52). The rate of CDAD case discharges shows an increasing trend, more than doubling from 2002 to 2006. Among previous primary CDAD admissions, 7.75% were readmitted as a primary CDAD cases (p-value Conclusions: CDAD cases are on the rise, with all CDAD cases diagnosed on discharge from doubling from 2002 to 2006. There is no current national surveillance system for tracking CDAD cases. This study begins to shed light on the increasing incidence of CDAD cases within the hospital setting. By providing a baseline, future research can use this information to make more extensive tracking and surveillance systems for CDAD cases.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Positive images have helped cities and nations attract investments, visitors, residents and talent. In contrast, a number of places are struggling with unfamiliarity and image problems based on inaccurate information or stereotypes. In other cases, a turbulent past, political instability, natural disasters, violence and economic downturns are to blame. Brand management is here particularly challenging but needed for many emerging, newly industrialised and transitional nations. A strong sense of national identity has the power to be a productive and enabling force in a society, providing positive social capital – improved cooperation within society, information flows, resilience and better functioning institutions. This thesis develops an understanding of how the process of branding may be used to help recreate an image of a post-conflict city or nation. It evaluates the potential, context and rationale of models designed to aid the branding process in environments defined by war residue. To do so, an interdisciplinary approach has been developed to identify the relations between the effect of national image and nationalism on brands, the built environment, and the image as a destination. The thesis draws on topics, experiences and questions from four different themes: conflict, tourism, marketing and architecture. Overall, it contributes to ongoing debates about branding and expands on them by exploring the unique post-conflict setting of Serbia, where discourses around urbanism, cosmopolitanism, the rural and local, as well as tensions between neighbouring countries are played out. The thesis examines the data relating to the case study of Serbia through a critical discourse analysis of printed media and interviews with key experts from the region. The research acknowledges literature on political or destination branding of other post-conflict countries, however, these are usually considered from a singular aspect – political science, implementation of a social programme or destination marketing. The thesis’ contributions are exploring the role of residents in a post-conflict environment and identifying it as a most important factor to consider when creating a branding strategy. It argues cities cannot carry the weight of a country’s brand, even though this is often an “ad hoc” solution, nor can national identity be interchangeable with the brand. The thesis argues First World branding models largely overlook the question of whether a place is post-conflict at all, and what form the conflict has taken. It provides a theoretical framework to analyse the construction of post-conflict national identities by drawing upon tourism, architecture, theories of national identity, and brand management.

Gunn, Annmarie Alberton. "Developing a Culturally Responsive Literacy Pedagogy: Preservice Teachers, Teaching Cases, and Postcard Narratives". Scholar Commons, 2010. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3669.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The results of the U. S Census provide evidence that our population is becoming more varied and that diversity is most salient in our schools. This demographic shift will continue to have a significant impact on the curriculum, students, teachers, and other aspects of education as we have historically known it. One of the most challenging aspect is that while our students are becoming more diverse, our teacher population is not. Eighty to ninety percent of the teaching population is White, heterosexual, middle class females, with little experiences with people from diverse backgrounds. (Lowenstein, 2009; Sleeter, 2001). The academic achievement gap continues to widen between culturally diverse students and their White peers. This disparity in achievement along demographic lines indicates a clear and present need to more fully prepare teachers on how to educate children of diverse backgrounds--a crucial component of developing a culturally responsive pedagogy. "As our society changes, so must our teacher education practices" (Lee, Summers, & Garza, 2009, p.1). This mixed method study was developed around the hypothesis that teaching cases and student-written postcard narratives using an empathetic identity (Wiseman, 1978) should be used in a literacy course to foster a culturally responsive literacy pedagogy. This study took place over one semester at a four year college, in a preservice education literacy course. Five teaching cases were written or modified to be aligned with this particular course’s content. I examined 20 preservice teachers (n=20) and a professor as they engaged in case-based instruction. Immediately following the teaching case discussion, the preservice teachers engaged in a writing exercise where they used an empathetic identity to imagine having the person in the teaching case’s experience (Wiseman, 1978). This study employed a mixed method design. Interviews with the professor, a professor’s journal, a researcher reflective journal, a pre and post teaching case, nonparticipant observation notes, preservice teacher written narratives, and the statistically significant results from the CDAI (Henry, 1991) at the alpha .05 level demonstrated that teaching cases effectively influenced preservice teacher’s perceptions and insights leading to a culturally responsive literacy pedagogy. Three major conclusions were drawn from this study. First, the implementation of teaching cases that feature diversity and literacy issues made an impact on the professor of this literacy course. The professor found that using teaching cases motivated her students, fostered a deeper discussion of the weekly topics, and created more transfer power of important topics to the classroom discussion than reading scholarly articles. Secondly, teaching cases that feature diversity and literacy issues influenced many of the preservice teachers’ insights and perceptions related to a culturally responsive pedagogy. The contextualization and alignment with the course content made them powerful tools to motivate and foster an entrance for preservice teachers to engage into a critical inquiry about culturally responsive teaching practices. Finally, the third conclusion drawn from this study is that utilizing activities which allow preservice teachers to use an empathetic lens can be a very powerful experience that may lead to developing a culturally responsive literacy pedagogy. Three recommendations to teacher education are suggested based on the conclusions drawn from the data. First, teacher education curriculum should include experiences that can foster a culturally responsive pedagogy. The use of teaching cases featuring diversity and literacy issues is strongly suggested, as well as cultivating experiences that allow the preservice teachers to use an empathetic identity. Secondly, these experiences should be viewed as valuable tools for professors in higher education, as the teaching population of higher education mirrors that of our teaching population (Lowenstien, 2009; Sleeter, 2001). During the case-based discussion the professor and preservice teachers can draw upon their shared knowledge of theoretical, cultural, cognitive, and experiential knowledge of teaching children from diverse backgrounds (Nordoff & Kleinfeld, 1992) as a conduit for a culturally responsive literacy pedagogy. Finally, teacher education has a responsibility to the well-being of their preservice teachers when purposely creating cathartic experiences. Culminating discussions should be designed to balance these emotional experiences (Ellis, 1995; Shulman, 1992). Several areas were identified for future research, encompassing the implementation of teaching cases and preservice teacher curriculum.

Abstract (sommario):
Frankfurt-style cases are purported counterexamples to the principle of alternate possibilities, since they arecases in which agents appear to be morally responsible for their actions, even though they lack the ability todo otherwise. Philip Swenson has recently challenged these Frankfurt-style cases as effective counterexamplesto PAP by presenting a scenario in which an agent seems to lack morally responsibility for failing to save achild, since he couldn’t do otherwise. And since there’s no morally relevant difference between this case ofomission, and the traditional Frankfurt-style cases, we should therefore conclude that the agents in theFrankfurt-style cases lack morally responsibility for their actions as well. In the following paper I argue thatone could simply run Swenson’s argument in reverse, thereby showing that it is the agent in his case that ismorally responsible for his omission, rather than the other way around, and that Swenson therefore has failedto demonstrate that Frankfurt-style cases should be rejected as effective counterexamples to PAP.

Abstract (sommario):
In the case of LaGrand (Germany v United States), the International Court of Justice held that the United States (US) had violated its international obligation to Germany under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations when it executed two German nationals without first informing them of their consular rights. The case came before the court after the United States had disregarded a preliminary ruling passed by the IC], which directed the US not to execute the German nationals pending the outcome of the ICJ case. The decision raised the issue of the effect of ICJ decisions in domestic proceedings and the effectiveness of ICJ enforcement mechanisms. This thesis considers the possibility of a role for national courts as active enforcers of ICJ decisions. It is argued that whilst evidence shows that there is no legal obligation on courts to enforce ICJ decisions, there is certainly room in international law to facilitate this development. In support of this argument, the thesis demonstrates how basic presuppositions about international law have shifted over the last few decades. This shift has been both the impetus and the result of globalisation. The case of LaGrand alongside similar cases is used to show how national courts may play an increased role in the enforcement of ICJ decisions.

Abstract (sommario):
A central debate in jurisprudence concerns the nature of the judicial obligation in 'hard' cases ones that turn on con- tested points of law. The legal positivists hold that judges have to exercise a discretionary power, not ultimately constrained by law, to decide such cases. Ronald Dworkin has argued that the decision of such cases is determined by law: judges must apply a 'soundest theory' which explains and morally justifies the existing law. Positivists respond that 'wicked' legal systems ones which are the instrument of a repugnant moral ideology are a counterexample to Dworkin. I set out this debate and then evaluate these rival positions in a case study of judicial interpretation in the South African legal system, which is the standard example of a wicked one. I argue that, in the historical and political context of a the South African legal system (Ch.2), the first part of the study (Chs.3,4,5) shows that positivist ideas not only fail to assist judges in a wicked legal system, but make things worse. I argue that the rest of the study (Chs.6,7,) shows how judges do better who adopt the advice that Dworkin gives. I also suggest that their approach can only be stop- ped at the cost of great damage to a legal system and that this should lead us to take seriously ideas put forward by Lon Fuller.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim for my thesis has been to investigate how literature, or fiction, is used in management education. What books are used – is there a literary leadership canon? What do the educators and the writers on this subject suggest that these books can teach the leaders? What are the philosophical foundations of this education? And – last but not least – does what the educators and writers offer respond to the needs of the businesses? My investigation shows that there is a canon in the area of management and fiction, where realistic 19th century novels, alongside with Shakespeare’s plays are dominant. Female writers and non-western writers are very underrepresented. The positive outcomes of reading and discussing these literary works that the educators and writers suggest do substantially correspond with the needs of the businesses, as presented by my sources. I have identified the field of using fiction in management education as divided in two parts, where one focuses on the reader’s development of character and the other one suggests that fiction could be used as business cases. The professor of philosophy, Martha C. Nussbaum is influential, and represents a view that almost all of my sources agree on: fiction can help people develop skills that are useful to themselves as individuals, and as members of (a democratic) society. So, do leaders need to read? My conclusion is that it certainly helps, if they want to improve the ability to understand and connect with others. I sum up this investigation with a humble suggestion for a model for using fiction in management education.

Abstract (sommario):
Swerea KIMAB has invested in a new and improved thermal spray technique, High Velocity Air-Fuel (HVAF). This has recently been introduced to the market given that the technical properties, costs and performance of the technique is still not thoroughly investigated and covered. An examination of these areas was therefore necessary to examine appropriate uses for the new technology. The investigation aimed to indicate how the new technology compares with established technologies in some areas in terms of performance and cost but also if there are any entirely new applications that the technology enables. In addition, there is also considerable uncertainty what the market for the new technology looks like today, and what it can be developed into. The market of thermal spraying is limited today. This entails that there is a great interest to investigate the preferences and equirements companies have to consider when choosing this new technology in favour of an ld one. It is also of great interest to investigate what skills and support companies’ requests in order to venture into this new technology. The aim with the work was to answer two research questions What are possible business cases for the HVAF technology from a technical as well as an economical point of view? What initiatives are necessary to get more companies and applications into the thermal spray business? The methods used for the master thesis were empirical studies, benchmarking, interviews, a survey and logical discussions. The report presents an overall knowledge bank for the most commonly used thermal spray technologies, compared with regards to characteristics and cost. As a result of the new features that the HVAF technology offers suitable application areas for the technology were identified through the work, such as high temperature corrosion protection. As a result of the survey the work also identified the general lack of knowledge about thermal spraying as the main obstacle to get more companies into using the technology.
