Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
At different times logical empiricists engaged one another in debates about the proper problems and methods for philosophy or its successor discipline. The most pressing problem focused on how to coordinate the abstract statements of the sciences with what can be experienced and tested. While the new logic was the main tool for coordination for Moritz Schlick, Hans Reichenbach, and Rudolf Carnap, there was no agreement on the nature of logic or its role in coordination. Otto Neurath and Philipp Frank countered with a sophisticated alternative that emphasized the social and political context within which science is done. All told, one finds in logical empiricism a high level of methodological awareness as well as a healthy skepticism about the appropriate aims and methods of philosophy.

Abstract (sommario):
Modernism and Time Machines places the fascination with time in canonical works of twentieth-century literature and art side-by-side with the rise of time-travel narratives and alternate histories in popular culture. Both modernism and this cardinal trope of science fiction produce a range of effects and insights that go beyond the exhilarations of simply sliding back and forth in history. Together the modernist time-obsession and the fantasy of moving in time help us to rethink the scales and shapes of time, the consistency of timespace, and the nature of history.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this Handbook is to provide the first one-volume survey of Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant philosophical and theological reception of Thomas Aquinas over the past 750 years. In addition to chapters surveying the key figures and time periods in the reception of Aquinas across confessional divides, the Handbook also includes chapters on central philosophical and theological themes that exhibit the main lines of what any adequate reception of Aquinas would need to communicate. Figures and major schools studied for their reception (whether critical or appreciative) of Aquinas’ theology include Scotus and Ockham, the Byzantine scholastics, Meister Eckhart, Durandus, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Cardinal Cajetan, the Council of Trent, the leading theologians of the Spanish ‘Golden Age’, the Reformed and Lutheran scholastics, the combatants in the de auxiliis controversy, the Catholic Thomistic commentatorial tradition, early modern and modern Orthodox readers of Aquinas, Joseph Kleutgen and the First Vatican Council, the Catholic neo-scholastics, Jacques Maritain, Étienne Gilson, Josef Pieper, the transcendental Thomists, the main figures of the nouvelle théologie, Karl Barth, Elizabeth Anscombe and Peter Geach, analytic Thomism, and postliberal Thomism. Specialized areas of reception treated by the Handbook include philosophy of nature, metaphysics, ethics, the human person, the natural knowledge of God, politics and law, the Trinity, creation and fall, providence, nature and grace, Jesus Christ, sacraments, and eschatology. The Handbook opens with an introductory study by the eminent Thomist Jean-Pierre Torrell, OP, which sets the stage for the remaining chapters.

Abstract (sommario):
How are the natural numbers individuated? That is, what is our most basic way of singling out a natural number for reference in language or in thought? According to Frege and many of his followers, the natural numbers are cardinal numbers, individuated by the cardinalities of the collections that they number. Another answer regards the natural numbers as ordinal numbers, individuated by their positions in the natural number sequence. Some reasons to favor the second answer are presented. This answer is therefore developed in more detail, involving a form of abstraction on numerals. Based on this answer, a justification for the axioms of Dedekind–Peano arithmetic is developed.

Abstract (sommario):
There are many kinds of number. This chapter concentrates on finite cardinal numbers, as they have a basic role in our thinking. Numbers cannot be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled; they do not emit or reflect signals; they leave no traces. So what kind of thing are they? How can we have knowledge of them? The aim of this chapter is to present and assess the main answers to these questions – classical and neo-classical, nominalism, mentalism, fictionalism, logicism, and the set-size view. All views are disputed, including the view I will argue for, the set-size view. The final section relates the finite cardinal numbers to the natural numbers.

Abstract (sommario):
Mikhail Bakhtin is a Russian philosopher who offered a different way of viewing sociality and its representation—a recurring theme in much of his writing. This chapter discusses four interrelated aspects of Bakhtin’s work that are of particular relevance to process thinking in organization studies and offer a distinct way to understand and represent sociality: the role of dialogue in the formation and understanding of social experience, the nature of language as lived conversation and responsive utterances, synthesizing the lived world and the world of reason, and carnival and culture. It also examines the implications of Bakhtin’s philosophy for organization studies.

Abstract (sommario):
Current metaphysical debates (between, e.g., Hirsch, Sider, Hawthorne, and others) are historically centered in an earlier debate between Carnap and Quine. This was a debate over whether formal languages can function as replacements for natural language or whether instead they offer techniques that can be used to modify natural languages. This debate continues to be relevant to contemporary debates between Hirsch and his opponents. Hirsch presupposes the natural-language-centered Quinean position; many of his opponents take Ontologese to be a cogent alternative for metaphysical discourse. In addition, it’s shown that Hirsch’s attempts to demarcate substantial from purely verbal debates derail because of the technical failure to show that finitely specified sentence-to-sentence mappings between disputant claims are available. It’s shown further that quantifier-variant views make no sense of ontological debate. Participants in ontological debate need to share an existence concept if they are to argue successfully with one another.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 5 examines three community-based rituals. The discussion of a community music festival focuses on a choir called Comhcheol, the Irish-language word for “harmony.” Comhcheol was formed by a group of women from the asylum-seeking and traveller communities. World Carnival is an annual event based in the most multicultural primary school in Limerick city. Anáil Dé/The Breath of God is a festival of world sacred music. The essentially relational and communicative nature of singing in these events is highlighted through a discussion of tacitness. The kinesthetic and emotive properties of singing are shown to increase opportunities for self-definition, as well as social integration through tacit communication.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The Napoleonic regimes, the Consulate of 1799–1804, and then the First French Empire from 1804 to 1815, have always proved baffling. Napoleon was anything but a convenient stereotype, and it stands to reason that his political creation soon comes apart in the hands of those who think in neat categories. This is not to say that close scrutiny cannot shed light on them, or even produce a reasonable definition of “Napoleonism” It is to say, however, that the path is not straight. Nevertheless, the fundamental role played by the Consulate and Empire in shaping modern Europe makes it all the more desirable to attempt to define them, if possible. True to this convoluted spirit of enquiry, any examination of the nature of Napoleonic rule, whether in the context of defining the Ancien Régime or not, must be undertaken with a cardinal caveat always in mind: The choice of the plural—Napoleonic regimes—is not pedantic. Napoleonic rule was ever evolving during its short life—hence its slippery nature.

Abstract (sommario):
For many decades, critics and supporters of Freudian theory have debated the exact nature of Freud's relationship with his sister-in-law. This book examines the arguments pro and con in light of recently exposed evidence—the first study to do so in depth. For many decades, controversy has surrounded the exact nature of famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's relationship with Minna Bernays, his sister-in-law. Why did Freud and Bernays travel alone together on many occasions? Why did she seem to be so much closer to Freud than his own wife, Martha? The idea that Freud and Minna Bernays had a long-standing affair—an allegation that Freudians typically deny—was first mentioned by Carl Gustav Jung, an early supporter of Freud's and later a critic. Love in Vienna: The Sigmund Freud–Minna Bernays Affair provides the first comprehensive look at the relationship and offers conclusions as to its nature and the implications for Freud's life and work. Organized logically, the book provides background information regarding the two chief antagonists in the story, Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung. It then presents and critically analyzes arguments for and against there having been an affair. Finally, it looks closely at Freud's relationships with both Minna Bernays and his wife Martha, Minna's sister, and offers conclusions as to the exact nature of Freud's relationship with Bernays. Beyond fascinating those studying Freud or his theories, this work's subject matter and insights will appeal to readers interested in the history of psychology, psychoanalysis, and psychiatry; the intellectual history of Europe; the history of sex and manners; the history of ideas; the fin de siècle period in Vienna; and the history of medicine.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter reviews the book Judaism in Transition: How Economic Choices Shape Religious Tradition (2014), by Carmel U. Chiswick. In Judaism in Transition, Chiswick examines the evolving nature of Judaism, primarily in America but also in Israel. Using the principles of cost-benefit analysis, Chiswick argues that economic choices influence participation in all areas of Jewish life. Focusing on historical and current choices such as Jewish education and synagogue membership, she not only highlights the role of economics in the time-allocation decisions of Jews, but also stimulates thinking on these issues for other religious and cultural groups. Chiswick makes a distinction between the “Great Tradition” that defines Judaism and the “Small Traditions” of Jews living in particular cultural contexts.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This book explores the largely uncharted territory of seventeenth-century Christology, paying close attention to its metaphysical and semantic presuppositions and consequences. The book achieves this by a distinction between two fundamental approaches to Christology. One, associated with Aquinas, maintains that the union between the divine person and human nature is immediate. Once joined, the two items cling together simply in virtue of their intrinsic structures, so to speak. The other, associated with Duns Scotus, maintains that the union of these two items requires some additional relational tie, over and above the divine person and the human nature. The book shows that theologians of all stripes develop and expand these two theories during the seventeenth century. Italian and French Dominicans follow Aquinas closely, read through the lens of Cardinal Cajetan. But Iberian Dominicans incorporate Suárez’s theory of modes into their account, and Suárez, whose account is in other respects more or less Scotist, is in turn followed by his fellow Jesuits. Lutherans use a theory that ultimately derives from Cajetan’s to fill explanatory gaps in their own accounts; and Reformed theologians by and large adapt the position associated with Duns Scotus.

Abstract (sommario):
From 1817 to 1820, on behalf of the Austrian Emperor Franz I, the Bavarian botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius traveled in Brazil, then the largest European colony, in order to bring a large collection of ethnologically important objects to Munich. In 1832, back in Europe, he wrote „Von dem Rechtszustande unter den Ureinwohner Brasiliens“ („On the state of law among the native peoples of Brazil“). The slender volume affords today's readers with a look through the very eyes of the explorers at the world they were entering, but also at the world they were bringing with them: the early 19th centuries’s conception of science before Darwin, shaped by Humboldt's scientific findings and the innovative systematics of Linné, who saw man as being a part of the system of nature and no longer as a creature of God. This new view is tantamount to a quantum leap in the science of man, and thus the travelogue of Schelling's student Martius can be read as an anthropology avant la lettre, precedings Claude Lévi-Strauss's famous book „Sad Tropics“ by a good hundred years.

Abstract (sommario):
Jochen von Bernstorff identifies the several roles and functions of international courts and tribunals (ICs) from the perspective of Hans Kelsen’s and Carl Schmitt’s accounts of international law. Kelsen saw the international judiciary with compulsory adjudication and de facto law-making authority as the key to a future peaceful world order. This would not require a world legislator. He also held that judges had considerable freedom in their interpretation and application of international law. Schmitt agreed that courts have a central law-making function, and also that judges are subject to few interpretative constraints. But Kelsen and Schmitt were not writing with today’s sector-specific international courts in mind. Much current concerns about the legitimacy of ICs can be traced back to tensions with what could be claimed to represent a global judicial imperialism. Von Bernstorff warns against sectorial colonization in the sense that the specialized ICs take control over non-judicialized sectors.

Abstract (sommario):
Exploring one of the most controversial topics in contemporary theology, this scholarly volume reveals what the world's great faiths—East and West—preach about sexuality, with a special emphasis on American religion. What do the world's most important religious texts have to say about one of humanity's favorite activities? Editors David W. Machacek and Melissa M. Wilcox have brought together top scholars in the field of religious studies to ask and answer these critical questions. Carefully researched, elegantly written, and respectfully presented,Sexuality and the World's Religionsexplores the intersection of the spiritual and the carnal in Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Daoism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and African and Native American spiritual traditions. A separate section explores critical religious and sexual topics in American society, including the role of spirituality in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities; the role of sex in the modern witchcraft community; and the ever thorny problem of religion and sexual liberty. Reconciling sexuality and spirituality in every human soul is one of religion's most important tasks. Students and other readers will find this timely and comprehensive volume of interest in exploring these issues.

Abstract (sommario):
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. Film in the digital era is increasingly developing as a sensory experience. Sounds and images together yield sensations that can approximate senses other than sight and hearing. Cinema can thusrender(as distinct fromreproduce) the coolness of the wet spray experienced by a fountain, for example, or speed, force, materiality, hollowness, heaviness, and so forth. At the same time, the nature of recording and filming takes sounds and images out of their real multisensory context and creates sensory isolates. Those who study film, games, and other audiovisual media should not to ignore their trans-sensory aspects.

Abstract (sommario):
In many of his political writings, Carl Schmitt seeks to render conflict and struggle visible and recognizable. He wages a metapolitical struggle against depoliticizing types of spirit and for the political. The meaning of history, as this chapter shows, is a crucial terrain for this metapolitical struggle: friends and enemies are symbolized and rendered (in)visible through historical discourses. The analysis demonstrates that Schmitt strongly rejects representations of history that tend to obfuscate its political nature, such as ideologies of progress or the idea of repetition in history. Instead, he advocates a sober and profane image of history, acknowledging its plural and contingent nature. Paradoxically, a figure of theological provenance, the katechon, is the minimal rest of an eschatological vision that Schmitt considers necessary to keep history and theology apart and to maintain an open and profane understanding of history.

This chapter explores the nature of the filial and sibling relationships that prevailed between and among J. S. Bach and his five musical sons: Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Gottfried Bernhard, Johann Christoph Friedrich, and Johann Christian. By examining the often unflattering explicit (and implicit) testimony contained in the surviving epistolary and musical sources, the author seeks to understand how these uniquely privileged, and uniquely challenged, musicians came to terms with their paternal legacy and to determine how, and with what degree of success, they sought to emerge from their father’s artistic shadow.

It begins by discussing how the natural abstraction principle for ordinals yields a contradiction (the Burali-Forti Paradox) when combined with impredicative second-order logic. It continues by arguing that the fault lies in the use of impredicative logic rather than in the abstraction principle per se. As the focus is on a form of predicative logic which reflects a philosophical diagnosis of the source of the paradox, the chapter considers how far Hale and Wright’s neo-logicist programme in cardinal arithmetic can be carried out in that logic.

Abstract (sommario):
Evolving BRICS cooperation in Competition Law and policy provides new hope. It aims to embrace the peculiarities of globalization in its current phase. All BRICS jurisdictions are desperately searching for a solution that shortcuts the developmental track. The group’s experimentalist energy and creativity are extremely important for the current phase of global economic development. Not only is an institutional structure of the global order in transition, but also the very nature of the global marketplace. The new global competition policy should focus on facilitation of openness among global networks and value chains through the reduction of the manipulative and exclusionary potential of networks. BRICS cooperation can help make the global marketplace fairer and more equal, and can promote competition encouraging a broader dissemination of knowledge and advanced technologies, while eliminating barriers imposed on the global flows of innovation by the global technological monopolies and cartel-like technological joint ventures.

Abstract (sommario):
Eric Salem’s “Object and Οὐσία‎: Harman and Aristotle on the Being of Things” is the last encounter with Aristotelian philosophy. Salem shows that Graham Harman aims to revive realism by putting objects back at the center of metaphysical inquiry. Harman traces his own thinking back to Aristotle, whom he considers to be the first object-oriented philosopher. Yet Harman, by rejecting the ontological importance of nature, universalizing intentionality to all kinds of object-object relations, and defending the reality of objects that Aristotle would not consider to be genuine οὐσίαι‎, claims to provide a weirder version of Aristotle’s theory of substance. Salem finds that the ideas of each can temper the excesses of the other: the cosmos of Aristotle corrects Harman’s overly expansive ontology, while the carnival of Harman supplements Aristotle’s insufficient account of autonomy and unity. Further, both provoke us to again ask – what is a thing?
