Abstract (sommario):
Recent literature documents the demise of traditional linear careers and the rise of protean, boundaryless, or portfolio careers, typified by do-it-yourself career management and finding security in ongoing employability rather than ongoing employment. This article identifies key attributes of the ‘new career’, arguing that individuals with careers in the well-established fields of fine and performing arts often fit into the ‘new careerist’ model. Employment/career data for professional fine artists, performing artists and musicians in Australia is presented to support this claim. A discussion of the meta-competencies and career-life management skills essential to navigate the boundaryless work world is presented, with specific reference to Australian artists, and recommendations for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the global performing arts, particularly for live performance, such as theatre. Graduating actors and musical theatre graduates have faced a scarcity of opportunities to launch their careers, and this is having a negative impact on their motivation and mental health. This article draws upon qualitative research gathered in 2015 with mid-career UK actors to codify the reasons or motivations for pursuing acting as expressed by the research participants. Ten different motivations to act were identified. Using theories of flow and self-actualization, this research evaluates the stated motivations to assess which might be sustainable in light of COVID-19 constraints on acting production and which motivations might contribute towards negative mental health. This is positioned for the arts entrepreneurship educator as a classroom exercise to help students articulate their motivations and as a way to open dialogue about personal resilience, mental health and structural inequality within the performing arts. The aim is to help position graduates more strongly towards sustainable career paths.

Abstract (sommario):
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a major health problem that affects an estimated 16.1% of American adults, but for musicians, the onset of noise-induced, or any type of hearing loss, can be a career-changing event. The potential for dangerous sound pressure levels in musical environments has been documented in numerous studies, with exposures in both short and long durations shown to be harmful. Yet, in theory, NIHL is completely preventable. This review discusses basic information concerning the hearing mechanism and NIHL, audiometry, standards, protective strategies, and terminology. It aims to provide a general understanding of these processes as they relate to musicians and other performing artists.

Abstract (sommario):
A decision to pursue a career in the performing arts is a lifelong and complex undertaking. Musicians begin instrument lessons in early childhood, when the ego and talent are developing simultaneously. In these vulnerable years and at any age, music teachers and schools can inhibit the creativity, musical and personal growth, and careers of their students by various common attitudes: e.g., overemphasis on improving technique and winning competitions; stress on prestigious performance careers; denial of the psychological implications of playing-related injury; or failure to promote other professional outlets in music as well as other professions. Sometimes, a musician's career plans are altered or aborted altogether. The author advocates the establishment of psychological and physical interdisciplinary programs and courses in the curriculum as important aspects of healthy music programs as well as career services programs to assist students with both performance and non-performance careers.

Abstract (sommario):
Rising worldwide scrutiny of the PhD has focused on issues such as return on investment and career outcomes. This article investigates PhD graduate careers and knowledge transfer looking at the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS). Firstly, our extensive literature review of PhD graduate outcomes reveals limited knowledge of HASS careers and a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) bias. Secondly, our case study of graduates suggests HASS PhDs provide a vital conduit for end-user engagement and knowledge transfer. Our findings deepen knowledge about the careers of HASS PhDs by revealing pre-existing professional networks may be harnessed to inform end-user relationships throughout candidature and post-graduation. Contrary to dominant assumptions, these networks may endure even for graduates in the academy. This under-recognized phenomenon demonstrates the multi-sector knowledge transfer capacity of HASS researchers with implications for their research capability and career development needs and perceptions of the value of their research.

Abstract (sommario):
Ni Ketut Arini, who is popularly called Mrs. Arini, is a maestro of Balinese performing arts. This article will discuss the maestro's progress, who is known as a multi-talented artist with a long history of preserving this regional performing arts. In Bali, there are many performing arts artists. However, of the many artists referred to, it seems that not many have track records throughout Mrs. Arini's career. The questions: how is Mrs. Arini's progress in preserving traditional Balinese performing arts?. This research was conducted using the life history method. The data sources for this research were Mrs. Ni Ketut Arini herself, her colleagues, her students at Sanggar Warini and related communities who were selected based on purposive sampling and snowball. All data collected through observation, interviews, and literature studies were analyzed using Bourdieu's theory of aesthetics and social action theory. The results of the study show that Ni Ketut Arini is an artist who graduated from the Indonesian Art College (STSI) in Denpasar, and most of her life has been dedicated to the preservation of Balinese performing arts. Since the age of 14, Ni Ketut Arini has mastered Balinese traditional dance. Her skill in dancing traditional Balinese dance has made Ibu Arini have many students and become a role model for artists in Bali. Mrs. Arini is known for consistently preserving traditional Balinese dance. Through the Warini Studio that she cares for, Mrs. Arini continues to strive to care for, maintain, and develop this Balinese performing art to attract Balinese cultural tourism.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This study aims to examine how the organizational structure of arts groups and their administrative personnel’s socio-demographic attributes affect the working conditions of and create tensions for their staff. Recent discussion about the cultural industries and labor has pursued two strands – macro-level research expounds on the organization of cultural industries and labor market; and micro-level studies focus on the work and employment of cultural practitioners. Very few of them, however, articulate the relationships between the two levels. This study contributes to the literature with a multilevel framework that examines the interplay between the structural conditions and personal factors in which labor–capital relationships evolve. Design/methodology/approach This study applies a qualitative approach to collect and analyze data. It conducted 39 in-depth interviews with arts managers and administrators from a sample of 18 performing arts organizations across four performing arts sectors in Hong Kong, namely, drama, music, dance and opera. The stratified sample covers arts organizations of different funding models – the public “nationalized” form, the mixed-economy form, and the privatized form. Findings This study shows that the funding and organization model of arts organizations resulted in various forms of job structure, and that the practitioners’ socio-demographic background shapes their career expectations. The job structure and career expectations together affect the labor turnover and influence organization strategies. Originality/value This study’s methodological contribution lies on its application of a multilevel framework to analyze the relationships between the macro- and the micro-level factors underpinning the working conditions of labor in the cultural industries. Besides, it contributes to the discussion about “labor precariousness” with empirical evidence from a comparative study of arts managers and administrators from organizations across four performing arts sectors.

Abstract (sommario):

As the political and economic landscape of the United States shifts in coming years, American society’s perception of the arts will likely change as well. Arts advocates must be ready to adapt their arguments for arts’ value to changing societal priorities. This paper summarizes the two leading frameworks for current arts advocacy arguments: extrinsic benefits and intrinsic benefits. The paper then introduces practical benefits, a pragmatic third framework for arts advocacy that focuses on skills gained through the creation of collaborative art that prepare participants for careers in the creative class, as defined by Richard Florida. The paper uses student-run theatre organizations on college campuses as incubators and case studies for these benefits, using original ethnographic research and surveys to develop assessment protocols for these benefits, with the intention of growing their applicability to larger and more varied arts organizations.

Connell, Kathleen R. "Investigating Performance Career Making and Career Transition through the Lens of Australia's Elite Classical Singers". Thesis, Griffith University, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/398418.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Creative careers in the performing arts follow a somewhat unique trajectory that is driven by specific skill demands and market conditions. This thesis investigates the careers of Australian classical singers through a qualitative interview-based study and analysis. The thesis outlines a trajectory of singers’ careers as they have become evident in the experiences of professional singers. Interviews with 13 retired professional classical singers were undertaken. Career theories and empirical studies from elite dance and sportsperson were interrogated to provide a basis for a qualitative examination of performance careers. Building on this, an analysis of the singers’ experiences of their professional life was undertaken. Implications arising were related to career models from the film industry, to discourses from cultural economics and sociology, to music training concepts and to the latest research on entrepreneurial approaches to working in the creative arts. The result was the identification of a distinct career trajectory for professional classical singers comprising several stages. The career stages proposed are: (1) pre-career; (2) breaking in; (3) the peak career; (4) denouement; (5) moving on. Other findings include that creativity and identity are tightly intertwined for the professional singers in the study, and when seeking new directions following the denouement stage, the majority of the singers attempted to remain attached to an artistic field even when they accepted that their time as a professional singer had passed. The thesis highlights that creative careers are difficult to sustain and that the fragility of the creative career, once realised, can have very real implications for the well-being of the creative professional. The research also revealed that career trajectories in professional singing follow a distinctive arc because of the way the work is creatively embodied. The findings suggest that career planning has often been inadequate in this industry and it is only in the consideration of the lifecycle of a creative performance career that the critical link between pre- and post-career stages can be made.

Pattison, David. "From Rhodesia to Zimbabwe via Oxford and London : a study of the career of Dambudzo Marechera". Thesis, University of Hull, 1998. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:3859.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
[From the introduction] : In my first chapter I will offer a review of Marechera's reputation and the critical reception given to his work, both during his life and since his death. In Chapter Two I Will outline the major theoretical issues raised by Marechera's work: Art versus psychological catharsis; the artist-as-communal-spokesman versus the artist-as-Romantic-individualist; nationalism versus literary universalism. Chapters Three, Four, Five and Six will then consider in sequence, the work produced in Oxford, in London and in Harare, tracing the writer's physical and psychological deterioration through his evolving prose style. Each of these chapters will also focus on a major relevant critical issue. Thus Chapter Three will examine The House of Hunger, written following Marechera's arrival in Oxford, in the context of 'culture clash', 'the African heritage' and Postcolonialism which so preoccupied its original reviewers. Chapter Four will examine Black Sunlight and The Black Insider, written while the author was destitute in London, in terms of Jung's 'neurosis or art' debate. Chapter Five will examine Mindblast and Chapter Six will examine Scrapiron Blues, both containing material written after Marecheras' return to Harare, making reference to the historical and socio-political context of post-colonial Zimbabwe and to the writer's unsuccessful attempts to establish a role with the nation builders. I will conclude in Chapter Seven by discussing Marechera's place within the Zimbabwean literary canon, the current relevance and influence of his work and the implications this holds for the future of Zimbabwean writing.

Abstract (sommario):
The research examined the links between intuition, interest in creative thought and the artistic interests of students. Most literature in the past linked intuition with creativity and artistic aptitude, but the question about the specific influence thereof on choosing an artistic career led to many different perspectives. The influence of thoughts and feelings on intuition was examined, as well as their connection to artistic inspiration. The researcher proposed that these factors provide a basis for an artistic career. Research was done on the links between interest in creative thought, artistic interest and intuition. The difference in correlation between intuition and Fine Arts and Performing Arts was also examined. The literature study focused on Jung's typology of personality, and his descriptions of intuition, feelings, thoughts, creative thoughts, art, artistic interest and inspiration, fine arts and performing arts, and their links with intuition. Quantitative research was done as a once-off cross-sectional design. Eight hundred and sixteen students of the University of Pretoria were included in the quantitative research. Intern Psychologists of Student Support Services evaluated these participants with the Jung Personality Questionnaire (JPQ), the South African Vocational Interest Inventory (SAVII) and the 19-Field Interest lnventory (19-FII). Two-directional frequency analyses were used to determine the links between the results of the intuition factor and the feeling and thought factors of the JPQ. The Spearman correlation coefficients were used as measures of the strength of general relation between the results of the intuition factor of the JPQ and the results of Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Creative Thought of the 19-FII and the A 2 (Creative design) and A 3 (Entertainment) of the SAVII. Variance analyses were used to determine the influence of intuition on interest in Fine Arts and Performing Arts. The responses to interview schedules by participants from two focus groups, namely 5 second year Drama students and 5 Fine Arts students, were analysed in the qualitative research. Most participants from the quantitative study fell within the intuition-feeling category and the percentage of participants in the intuition-feeling category was greater than those in the intuition-thought category. Results were supported by the qualitative study. The conclusion was drawn that intuition is more linked to feeling than is thought. Inspiration for art does develop from feeling, but it will be communicated by thoughts, after interplay between intuition and feeling. The quantitative study confirmed that intuition plays a bigger role than sensation when there is interest in careers requiring creative thought. Interest in creative thought also showed a positive link with interests in fine arts and performing arts. The conclusion was drawn that intuition plays an important role in occupations involving interest in creative thought. However, interest in creative thought is still dependent on feeling for verification in the creative process. The research showed that intuition, a personal life-long passion, or love of art were determining factors when an artistic career choice was made. It was therefore concluded that intuition has a strong relation to artistic interest. It was determined that intuition, as well as factors such as a person's strengths and weaknesses, and knowledge of the requirements and demands of success, work together in shaping an artistic career choice. Intuition showed a tendency for a greater correlation with Fine Arts than with Performing Arts. The research had certain deficiencies, as it was only conducted on university students and it did not make provision for environmental influences. The qualitative research was too structured and the JPQ was not developed initially for quantitative analyses. The examination of interest in creative thought could not provide an explanation of the complete creative process. However, the research was of value to counselling psychologists for making career recommendations, as it provided valuable information in artistic careers. It also created a possible framework for future research on the assessment of artists to assist them in developing and reaching their full potential.

Abstract (sommario):
The contemporary theatre landscape seems to have strayed away from the feelings specific to poetry and to reciting it in front of an audience. The topics preferred by theatrical productions now, at the beginning of the XXIst Century, are strongly connected to the social realities one encounters on a daily basis. Certainly, it is reasonable for things to be this way, as theatre depends on firmly anchoring itself in reality, and the means of expression and of conveying emotion have, now, particularities that no one would have thought of fifty years ago. The present study intends to bring performance poetry back into discussion, as a type of artistic expression that has very well contoured specific elements, but that does not benefit from addressing broad audiences anymore, unfortunately

Abstract (sommario):
Qualified teachers are a fundamental input for any education system. Yet, many countries struggle to attract highly skilled applicants to the teaching profession. This paper presents the results of a large-scale intervention to attract high performing high-school students into the teaching profession in Chile. The intervention was a three-arm email campaign which made salient three types of motivations typically associated with the teaching profession: intrinsic/altruistic, extrinsic, and prestige-related. The objective was to identify which type of message better appealed to high performing students to nudge them to choose a teaching major. The “intrinsic” and “prestige” arms reduced applications to teaching majors among high performers, while the “extrinsic” arm increased applications among low performers. A plausible interpretation could be that the “intrinsic” and “prestige” messages made more salient an issue that could otherwise be overlooked by high performing students (typically from more advantaged households), negatively impacting their program choice: that while the social value of the teaching profession has improved, it still lags behind other professions that are valued more by their families and social circles. In turn, the “extrinsic” arm made salient the recent improvements in the economic conditions of the teaching profession in Chile, thus appealing to low performing students who in general come from disadvantaged families and for whom monetary incentives are potentially more relevant. These results emphasize the importance of having a clear picture of the inherent motivations that could influence individuals career choice. Making salient certain types of motivations to the wrong target group could lead to undesired results.

Abstract (sommario):
Project Report There is growing research on arts audiences - particularly regarding theatre and dance (Sedgman 2019; Walmsley 2019; Reason et al 2022). However, much of this work remains centred on the ‘Global North’ and there is little published research on arts audiences in South East Asia in general, and Cambodia in particular. The exception to this is our previous report (Rogers et al 2021) which was the first time that research has examined audience composition, understanding and preferences for the performing arts in Phnom Penh. This research raised a bigger question around who the arts are for and highlighted that young people did not always understand what they were watching. The project discussed here builds on this previous work, as it sought to further understand the composition of audiences attending Cambodian performance events, examine their reactions, and consider how using simple forms of technology may promote audience engagement and understanding. The research used Cambodian Living Arts’ (CLA) 2022 Cultural Season of performances, workshops, and talks as a case study through which to experiment with this and other methodologies. The Cultural Season (titled Action Today: Consequences Tomorrow) was held in Phnom Penh and then toured across Cambodia, also giving the research the unique opportunity to find out more about arts audiences in the provinces. The findings provide insights into the level of knowledge and understanding of the arts among different audiences across Cambodia, their preferences in terms of types of arts consumed, and the choices surrounding their participation and involvement in the arts.
