Based on the body element and topological features, studied and built up the fundamental system of feature-description of digital design and manufacturing for the typical shaft-like components, systematically researched and set up content tree of the feature description, two core sub-systems of spatial relationships of geometric elements orientated to the digital design and presentation of processing operation features faced to the digital manufacturing, followed by comprehensive-parameter method for the description of surface characteristics of the component. An example, supporting axis, from Quanhai Machinery Development Co. Ltd., was given for considerations taken in utilization of the feature-description system for the digital design and manufacturing. It is hoped that the current study and the construction of the system may lay the foundation for the unification of CAD/CAPP/CAM.

A recently developed multi-ceramic additive manufacturing process (multi-CAMP) and an appropriate device offer a multi-material approach by vat photopolymerization (VPP) of multi-functionalized ceramic components. However, this process is limited to ceramic powders with a certain translucency for visible light. Electrically conductive ceramic powders are therefore ruled out because of their light-absorbing behavior and dark color. The goal of the collaborative work described in the article was to develop a material combination for this multi-material approach of the additive vat photopolymerization method which allows for combining electrical conductivity and electrical insulation plus high mechanical strength in co-sintered ceramic components. As conductive component titanium suboxides are chosen, whereas zirconia forms the mechanically stable and insulation part. Since titanium suboxides cannot be used for vat photopolymerization due to their light-absorbing behavior, titania is used instead. After additive manufacturing, the two-component parts are co-sintered in a reducing atmosphere to transform the titania into its suboxides and, thus, attaining the desired property combination. The article describes the challenges of the co-processing of both materials due to the complex optical properties of titania. Furthermore, the article shows successfully co-sintered testing parts of the material combination of zirconia/titanium suboxide which are made by assembling single-material VPP components in the green state and subsequent common thermal treatment. The results of microstructural and interface investigations such as electrical measurements are discussed.

This paper reflects upon two (un)related spectacular phenomena in South Africa: rape and black racism using Zukiswa Wanner’ London Cape Town Joburg (2014). It examines how the text uses irony to turn postapartheid optimism on its head, while refusing to uncritically borrow and use apartheid language of manufacturing difference. In addition, it makes connections between rape, intimacy and empathy in the contexts of sexual violence by examining the role of tactical empathy during the episodes of rape in the text. It concludes by suggesting that although empathy is an emotion for social good and transformation, it maybe co-opted and used to perpetuate uncanny/predatory masculinities and sexual violence on people perceived to be less privileged, weak and/or ‘deviant’. In addition, this work proffers that foregrounding vaginal discourses on discussions about rape in South Africa render other forms of sexual violence – male and anal rape – invisible/unthinkable.

Background: Sickness absenteeism is a potential epidemiological issue leading to loss of productivity in addition to increasing the cost of health care and provides a major tool in enhancing occupational health care preventive strategies. Aim and Objectives: To determine the prevalence of sickness absenteeism and their associated factors among Industrial Workers of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing industries in Hyderabad. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was taken up among 160 Workers at two Pharmaceutical Manufacturing companies in Hyderabad using simple random sampling technique. Data included Individual, Occupational and Organizational factors influencing their sickness absenteeism and general health conditions in the past six months through camp based approach. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression analysis to predict the variables associated with the outcome. Results: The prevalence of sickness absenteeism was found among 19% of the workers. Common causes were due to sickness among 25(84%) and social responsibilities among 5(16%). On multinomial logistic regression analysis- poor superior relationships, poor co-workers relationship and high mental stress were found to be significant. Conclusion: Sickness absenteeism was found to be high which can be reduced by improving relationships with superiors and co-workers and also by reducing mental stress among the workers.

Chemistry is a field of study that teaches students critical skills in producing day-to-day products ranging from detergents, cosmetics, energy components and supplies for treating water. The majority of chemistry students seek formal employment after completing their studies, which helps to explain the increased incidence of unemployed South African graduates. This occurrence is more apparent in the Eastern Cape where there are very few chemistry industries with such employment opportunities. However, having an entrepreneurial mindset can lead to students venturing into business during or after their studies. Student businesses not only benefit the student but the community with accessible personalized solutions to their problems, institutions with reputation, creating a circular economy and possibly employment of others. Hence, this study aims to evaluate whether the offered entrepreneurship education to chemistry students stimulates an entrepreneurial mindset. The paper employed the qualitative narrative literature review methodology and the connectivism learning theory to achieve the set aim. Explored themes in realizing the aim are graduate attributes, science-based entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial mindset. The key findings are that science-based entrepreneurship education lacks the embedment of fundamental chemistry that creates familiarity with the concept and subsequent relatability with the course content. The connectivism learning theory supports the link between familiarity and new learning opportunities whereby, in this case, an entrepreneurial mindset can be stimulated. The study proposes that entrepreneurship education for chemistry students must include chemistry-related case studies and a participatory practical approach as a co-curricula. The co-curricula aspect will involve opportunities to start a real business on campus during the semester in which the course is offered.

Abstract The presence of legacy pollutants, on-going chemical manufacturing activities, and population shifts have introduced complex, cumulative exposure risks to residents of many highly industrialized communities. These “industrial corridors” present unique challenges to environmental health science professionals, public and private sector decision makers, and residents seeking to make their communities safer and healthier. Social-ecological resilience theory offers a useful framework for the design and implementation of community engagement efforts to help stakeholders take action to reduce their exposure risks. A resilience framework views the human community as a coupled social-ecological system, wherein disturbances to the equilibrium of the system – acute and/or chronic – are common rather than rare events. It recognizes three key capacities of more resilient communities. These are the abilities of community members to self-organize to address changing threat levels, to hold scientifically sound understandings of the risks, and to learn from past experiences and take action – individually or collectively – to adapt to or mitigate the hazards in their local environment. We apply this resilience theory framework to a case study from Camp Minden, Louisiana, conducted through the Louisiana State University (LSU) Superfund Research Center’s Community Engagement program and supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The case illuminates a critical path by which resilience theory can be applied to guide bi-directional communication and information-gathering, and co-development of risk-reducing strategies at the community level. These are central elements of community engagement within a contentious, real-world setting. The three components of the resilience framework were supported by specific program mechanisms and activities. The capacity for self-organization among community stakeholders was furthered through the convening of a Dialogue Committee which brought together representatives of concerned residents, regulatory agencies, research scientists, and others. This collaborative problem-solving approach supported a more holistic and scientifically sound understanding of the problem through a series of interactive meetings in which members discussed site-remediation options with thermal-treatment experts and regulators, and shared how recent explosions and concerns about air quality affected them. The members co-developed selection criteria and reached consensus on two types of disposal methods that would best reduce the significant threats to public health and the local environment. We also include a brief summary of our recent randomized survey of over 550 residents of Louisiana’s industrialized communities to determine the influences on household-level adaptive behaviors to reduce acute and chronic environmental exposure risks. The results of the logistic regression analysis indicate that residents with more concern and knowledge about environmental hazards, along with confidence in their ability to implement risk-reduction measures – such as checking air-quality forecasts and then limiting outside activities – were much more likely to adopt the exposure-reducing behaviors, even when controlling for socioeconomic and demographic differences among respondents. These findings shed light on the conditions under which residents of these types of communities may be more likely to take action to reduce potential environmental exposure risks, and may help in the design of public education efforts. These “lessons learned” from Louisiana communities facing cumulative environmental exposure risks suggest that application of resilience theory to the design and implementation of community engagement programs may support the longer-term effectiveness of the efforts and enhance overall environmental health resilience. In addition, they provide practical insights about how to operationalize and apply these theoretical concepts to real-world environmental health challenges faced by residents of industrialized communities throughout the world.

Amateur archaeologists in DenmarkThe article briefly sums up the history of amateur archaeology in Denmark and mentions the most renowned amateur archaeologists and collectors of artefacts, mainly from the island Fyn. Attention focuses on describing the close collaboration between amateur and profession al archaeologists, which has resulted in the institution of museums all over the country, often through donations of extensive artefact collections from skilful and wealthy amateur archaeologists.The first museum was established in Copenhagen by Ole Worm (1588-1654), who studied the Danish prehistory. The king, Frederik III (1609-1670), made the museum into a kunstkammer, which included not only archaeological artefacts but also curiosities. Later, the artefact collections were gathered in the Old Nordic Museum, which became the present National Museum in 1892.Ole Worm’s contemporary, the nobleman Jesper Friis (1593-1643) of Ørbæklunde on Fyn created an extensive and comprehensive kunstkammer including two Egyptian mummy coffins (fig. 1). Another native of Fyn, Professor Thomas Broder Bircherod (1661-1731) also had a collection of curios. In the 19th century, Lauritz Schebye Vedel Simonsen (1780-1858), the owner of the manor Elvedgård, and Niels Frederik Bernhard Sehested (1813-1882), owner of the manor Broholm, had large collections of artefacts. The latter was a talented amateur archaeologist, who undertook systematic excavations of almost 400 Iron Age graves on the Møllegårdsmarken site. The finds were published in well-illustrated books. Sehested had a small museum built in the manor garden, where he exhibited his finds. The museum still exists (fig. 2). He also experimented with the practical manufacturing and use of prehistoric tools – a novelty at the time (fig. 3). Even King Frederik VII (1808-1863), once the governor of Fyn, was a passionate collector, who undertook or initiated many excavations.The 20th century saw many wealthy amateur archaeologists, who built museums and issued archaeological publications, as for instance the prefect of the island Bornholm, Emil Vedel (1824-1909), who – assisted by the teacher, Johan Andreas Jørgensen (1840-1908) – made comprehensive investigations into several hundred graves at Lousgaard on Bornholm. Vedel initiated the horizontalstratigraphic excavation method, which resulted in the introduction of the Pre-Roman Iron Age in Danish archaeology. As an acknowledgement for this, Emil Vedel was appointed vice president of ”Det kongelige Nordiske Oldskriftselskab,” a credit to an amateur archaeologist!The chemists Christen Mikkelsen (1844-1924) and his son, Poul Helweg Mikkelsen (1876-1940) represented two generation s of very active amateur archaeologists on Fyn. Both left large private collections, which they willed to The National Museum and Fyns Stiftsmuseum (the museum of the diocese of Fyn) (fig. 4). Poul Helweg Mikkelsen is especially remembered for his excavation of the Ladby Viking ship. Out of his own pocket he paid for the building of a cupola covering the Viking ship, which was left in situ, thus making this Viking ship grave unique in Scandinavia.JensWinther (1863-1955), a grocer on the island of Langeland, paid a museum with his own money (fig. 5). He was a skilful amateur archaeologist, who carried out numerous excavations and introduced a new excavation technique, surface digging, involving the gradual exposure of the surface through the removal of thin successive earth layers – a technique that set a fashion. His excavations at the Troldebjerg site functioned as training excavations for future professional archaeologists. For instance, P.V. Glob, the later professor of archaeology and keeper of national antiquities, was one of Winther’s ”pupils”. Also Winther’s lifelong housekeeper, Miss Hornum, was a skilful amateur archaeologist – so skilful that she was invited to take part in the excavation of Inuit settlements in Greenland. Later she was admitted the second female member of ”Det kongelige Nordiske Oldskriftselskab,” following professor Brøndsted’s recommendation.Svend Dyhre Rasmussen (fig. 6), an amateur archaeologist from Sjælland, found the famous medieval high-backed fields and the adjoining village of Borup Ris. His fellow islander, Karl Kristian Nielsen (fig. 7) was a hardworking amateur archaeologist, who undertook both prehistoric and medieval excavations for forty years. He was a modest, self-taught man working as a charcoal burner and thus nicknamed ” the learned charcoal burner”. He was the first amateur archaeologist honoured with the membership of ”Det kongelige Nordiske Oldskriftselskab” (fig. 8).The article also mentions the wide section of the population – comprising all classes – that has contributed to collectin g and preserving our relics of the past in such a comprehensive manner. Another purpose of the article is to show the connection between important events in Danish history and the amateur archaeological initiatives that resulted from them. The article gives a survey of Danish amateur archaeology, which is organised in numerous associations that stimulate the public interest in this field.A new initiative was the founding of a countrywide organisation of amateur movements, the SDA, in 1990 (fig. 9).The SDA has initiated courses, publication of an amateur archaeological periodical and the ambitious project, ”Operation Golden Horn” aiming at a countrywide registration and mapping of finds and relics. The history of the amateur archaeologist associations on Fyn is described, including examples of the work of smaller groups (fig. 11). The cooperation between amateur archaeologists and museum employees on Fyn culminated in 1984 with the exhibition” Past time and spare time”.An important part of amateur archaeologists’ work is the participation in the annual excavation camps, where the amateurs enjoy the pleasure of finding artefacts and learn how to register them scholarly correctly. Cooperation on a Scandinavian level resulted in a Nordic Amateur Archaeologists’ Excavation Camp (the NAU) in connection with Odense’s 1000th anniversary in 1988 (fig. 12). Since then, similar excavation camps have been held in other Nordic countries, and in Estonia. The cooperation with Estonia has given a wider perspective, which includes international cooperation at different levels.The amateur archaeologists’ knowledge of their own neighbourhood has proved important, as they co nt act the profession al archaeologists when farming methods or public construction work is unexpectedly revealing archaeological finds. In such cases, retired and unemployed amateur archaeologists have made an ”ambulance service”, which offers assistance to museums at short notice. Another special initiative was taken by the amateur ar chaeologists on Bornholm, who created a special branch for detector amateurs. This has helped both Norwegian and Swedish museums investigating known sites and thus gain a more differentiated picture of Iron Age settlements. A third special branch of amateur work is the investigation of the submarine settlement of Tybrind Vig, which is an example of a well functioning coopertion with the marine-archaeological group in Fredericia.When in the 1991, Professor Henrik Thrane, Doctor of Philosophy, made the Hollufgård Museum on Fyn and its collection s more user-friendly and accessible to the public by creating ”open stores”, he also gave the amateur archaeologists the possibility of self-tuition. The publication of the archaeological journal ”Archaeology and the natives of Fyn” in 1979 was a result of cooperation between the museum and amateurs (fig. 13). Finally, in 1993, the SDA journal now carrying the name of” Archaeology for everyone” was published. To stimulate the interest in archaeology among the youth, so-called Hugin and Munin clubs have been started, with branches in Copenhagen, on Fyn and in Jutland.The Erik Westerby foundation (initiated by this famous amateur archaeologist) was created to support Danish archaeologists. In 1994, Axel Degn Johansson was the first amateur archaeologist to receive the price, along with 100.000 Dkr, and later another twelve amateur archaeologists have enjoyed grants and presents of money from the foundation.Finally, the importance of the amateur movement for the present and the future is mentioned, and it is stressed that good cooperation between amateurs and museum professionals is very important. Amateur archaeologists will also benefit from the new and refined methods of dating and analysing archaeological finds and – when detecting new finds in the field – of the exact position determination offered by the GPS system. Today, companies often have operations distributed around the world, and production facilities and designers are often in different locations. Increased use of outsourcing and geographically dispersed supply chains further complicates the manufacturing world. The globalization of manufacturing business means that companies should be able to design, build, and maintain, anywhere at any time. Manufacturing engineers are seeking effective tools during planning to help improve production processes, plant designs, and tooling, and to allow earlier impact on product designs. Collaboration may exist in a number of activities such as (a) reviewing designs with the design team; (b) interfacing with tooling designers; (c) verifying tooling assembly and operation; (d) reviewing manufacturing process plans and factory layouts; and (e) discussing manufacturing problems with suppliers. In larger companies, collaboration is becoming increasingly important in design and manufacturing. Everyone knows something, but no one knows everything. There is an evolution from individuals working independently to functioning in workgroups, as well as enterprise collaboration and collaboration throughout a supply chain. Within a supply chain, sharing knowledge has become paramount. This chapter describes the methods of developing an Internet-enabled, integrated CAD, CAPP, CAM, and CNC system to support collaborative product development. The main goal is to provide a team environment enabling a group of designers and engineers to collaboratively develop a product in real time. STEP can be used to represent product data for heterogeneous application systems and data formats, and the Web-based Product Structure Manager developed can be an effective function module to co-ordinate collaborative activities.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">In comparison to aluminum, Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) iron has superior mechanical properties, enables the use of parent bore running surfaces and fracture split main bearings, and provides advantageous NVH, package size, cost, and manufacturing CO<sub>2</sub> profiles. Despite these advantages, aluminum blocks have leveraged density, and therefore weight, differentials to make considerable gains in the small, in-line passenger vehicle sector over the last 30 years.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In order to demonstrate the potential benefits of CGI for small, in-line spark-ignition engines, the present study converted the cylinder block of a series production 1.2 litre three-cylinder engine from aluminum to CGI. Leveraging a novel design concept, with the running surface and load path constructed from high-strength CGI and the outer crankcase housing fabricated from durable, lightweight plastic, the assembled cylinder block achieved the same weight as the original aluminum block.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">NVH analyses showed that the global flexural modes of the CGI cylinder block were 5% higher than aluminum block while the four main bearing cap modes were 18~40% higher, indicating potential NVH advantages for the CGI engine. It is further noted that the design of the CGI cylinder block was constrained by the need to maintain outer dimensions and bore-centers to facilitate engine assembly for durability testing. It is estimated that a clean-sheet design could have enabled a further 5% reduction in the weight of the CGI block.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">With weight parity, and the successful completion of a 100-hour durability test, CGI has established a new benchmark for small, in-line passenger vehicle engines.</div></div>

This paper describes the research carried out in the European Commission co-funded project LEMCOTEC (Low Emission Core Engine Technology), which is aiming at a significant increase of the engine overall pressure ratio. The technical work is split in four technical sub-projects on ultra-high pressure ratio compressors, lean combustion and fuel injection, structures and thermal management and engine performance assessment. The technology will be developed at subsystem and component level and validated in test rigs up to TRL5. The developed technologies will be assessed using three generic study engines (i.e. regional turbofan, mid-size open rotor, and large turbofan) representing about 90% of the expected future commercial aero-engine market. Two additional study engines from the previous NEWAC project will be used for comparison. These are based on intercooled and intercooled-recuperated future engine concepts. The compressor work is targeting efficiency, stability margin and flow capacity by improved aerodynamic design. High-pressure and intermediate-pressure compressors are addressed. The mechanical and thermo-mechanical functions, including the variable-stator-systems, will be improved. Axial-centrifugal compressors with impeller and centrifugal diffuser are under investigation too. Three lean burn fuel injection systems are developed to match the technology to the corresponding engine pressure levels. These are the PERM (Partially Evaporating Rapid Mixing), the MSFI (Multiple Staged Fuel Injection) and the advanced LDI (Lean Direct Injection) combustion systems. The air flow and combustion systems are investigated. The fuel control systems are adapted to the requirements of the ultra-high pressure engines with lean fuel injection. Combustor-turbine interaction will be investigated. A fuel system analysis will be performed using CFD methods. Improved structural design and thermal management is required to reduce the losses and to reduce component weight. The application of new materials and manufacturing processes, including welding and casting aspects, will be investigated. The aim is to reduce the cooling air requirements and improve turbine aerodynamics to support the high-pressure engine cycles. The final objective is to have innovative ultra-high pressure-ratio core-engine technologies successfully validated at subsystem and component level. Increasing the thermal efficiency of the engine cycles relative to year 2000 in-service engines with OPR of up to 70 (at max. condition) is an enabler and key lever of the core-engine technologies to achieve and even exceed the ACARE 2020 targets on CO2, NOx and other pollutant emissions: • 20 to 30 % CO2 reduction at the engine level, exceeding both, the ACARE 15 to 20% CO2 reduction target for the engine and subsequently the overall 50% committed CO2 and the fuel burn reduction target on system level (including the contributions from operations and airframe improvements), • 65 to 70 % NOx reduction at the engine level (CAEP/2) to attain and exceed the ACARE objective of 80% overall NOx reduction (including the contributions from both, operational efficiency and airframe improvement), reduction of other emissions (CO, UHC and smoke/particulates) and • Reduction of the propulsion system weight (engine including nacelle without pylon).
