In this PH D. thesis, we consider video games as a technical transformation of play. How is thistransformation characterised, what kind of rupture or continuity with previous forms of play doesit provoke, ; those are our only concern. It is not very hard to see, without going into a detailedanalysis, that video games are a transformation of play based on the possibilities of computerscience. Computers have put themselves between the player and the game, with consequencesone should measure. The term « reification », rather dated and deeply rooted in critical theory, allows to embracein a manner both historical and precise the consequences of such a technical change, affectingthe activity itself and the subject engaged in such an activity. It has been employed by GeorgLukàcs in 1923, in an essay describing the consequences of industrialised capitalism. Weconsider computer science to be the vector of a change as important as the one brought byindustry in its time. As the rationalisation of human activity is growing, there is no reason thatreification, which is one of its direct consequence, should not grow likewise. The question wetackle is the following : How are video games a reification of play ?We have noted the changes operated between games and video games, and through thedetailed analysis of the experience of video games, applied to a larger social scale, we have triedto understand how the reification of play is a symptom of a more general movement, whichresults in the rationalisation of all human activities

This study seeks to revisit the notion of "state capitalism", at once theoretically and empirically, comparatively and monographically, in view of renewing the critical understanding of the state's involvement in capitalist markets in the current period. This endeavour is premised on a critical examination of the extant theoretical literature on state-market relations, including past writings that have grappled explicitly with "state capitalism", both in the previous century and in recent years. It entails, further, the design and implementation of a novel conceptual-methodological framework for the comparative assessment of degrees, modalities, and institutional sites of state control and influence over the economic process. Finally, it features an in-depth investigation of the institutional instantiations and societal ramifications of the party-state's economic attributions in the People's Republic of China, the national formation most frequently identified with state capitalism today. Overall, this study embodies an attempt to vindicate the relevance of a reconstructed concept of state capitalism for critical political economy, and specifically for the research agenda on comparative capitalism. Additionally, it purports to reclaim the problematics of social agency and elite formation in relation to the elucidation of the capitalist state. In so far as it sheds light on China's development trajectory in the reform era and on its present-day political-economic configuration, this study also represents an effort to further the integration of China within comparative research in political economy

The last two decades have brought Carl Schmitt's work back in the spotlight as fas as political theory is concerned, not without controversy. Events of the last twenty years, like the fall of Berlin wall or the 9/11 attacks, have led to new debates regarding his theories. Indeed, the end of the USSR and the triumph of liberal democracy, but also the return of the so-called "religious phenomena", give a birth to a new vision of modern conflicts recalling Carl Schmitt's main ideas: political theology, opposition between democracy and liberalism, the theory of fair wars, as well as terrorism via his partisan theory. Those subjects that have been dealt with contemporary philosophers, like Giorgio Agamben, Antonio Negri, Jacques Derrida, Etienne Balibar, Slavoj Zizek or Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau to rethink politics. What is examined here are the terms in which these autors use Carl Schmitt's theories to revise Marxism, regardless Proudhon 's theories, event thought they revolved around these rediscovered problematics
Guillibert, Paul. "Terre et capital : penser la destruction de la nature à l'âge de catastrophes globales". Thesis, Paris 10, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA100069.
What does “Gaia’s intrusion’’ change to socialist thought and in particular to Marxism? Can we maintain the critique of capitalism and the revolutionary project “in times of disasters’’? This work defends that the contemporary destruction of nature imposes a triple task on the philosophy inherited from Marxism. First, capitalism must be rethought on the basis of its long-term environmental history. It will then appear as a system that evolves and transforms itself according to the natures it appropriates. Secondly, thinking about the destruction of nature implies a naturalistic ontology on which one can base a critique of destructive social practices and from which it is possible to imagine new natural relationships. Third, we are witnessing the spontaneous intervention of a multiplicity of non-human beings in our social histories. This agency of “historical natures’’ changes the soil of our political experiences and recomposes our revolutionary cosmopolitics. Provided that it is rethought on the basis of the experience of the destruction of nature, historical materialism can provide the necessary impetus for the formulation of a social emancipation programme adapted to the age of global disasters

How to grasp, at the turn of the 1970s and in films made by filmmakers who made no secret of their Marxist, Communist or revolutionary commitment (Pasolini, Arrabal, Fassbinder, Jancsó, Garrel, etc.), the recurrence of patterns and schemes borrowed from Christian iconography and liturgy? The article about « the disappearance of the fireflies », published by Pasolini in 1975, offers the allegorical and theoretical matrix permitting to apprehend the singular historical and political sequence which goes from the end of the 50s to the middle of the 70s. First, it designates the advent of a dangerous neo-capitalist power, destructive and totalizing, in the face of which Marxism and Christianity will be led to modify their tools of struggle and vision. The article, then, describes a real anthropological crisis which attains the destruction of entire cultural worlds, in the face of which it will be a question of giving back to rites and traditions their potential for revolt, which allows them to play as operators capable of mobilizing the energies lacking in the political struggles, such as memory or communion. As an elegy mourning the disappearance of beloved cultures, the article finally presents a real eschatological report on the end of the world, a theological problematic re-exposed, at the same time, by the nuclear threat, the industrial paroxysm of the domination of the technical reign. Thus, the Pasolinian fireflies draw the singular iconological regime from which these resistant films proceed, opposing the faint gleam of an archaic gesture, albeit religious, to the powerful rationalist spotlights of capitalist civilization. The patterns identified in these films therefore proceed from a historical-aesthetic paradigm which makes the surviving past the privileged tool of a political struggle, of which it is possible to trace the archeology, from the notions of Nachleben, Pathosformel and Inversion forged by the german art historian Aby Warburg to the “dialectical image” in Walter Benjamin; and of which it is possible to find traces at the time, in a wide variety of disciplines (the political theology of Johann Baptist Metz, who made Christian memoria passionis an anti-bourgeois category; or the ethnology of gesture elaborated by the anthropologist Ernesto De Martino, who was to open Marxism to its unthought: the essential restorative and socio-cultural dimension of rites and images of religious origin). At the confluence of these two great traditions of hope that are Christianity and Communism, the films analyzed in this study challenge the contemporary paradigm of secularization and inform us about the revival, in modern times, of the great anthropological problems which have never ceased to occupy human thought: the contestation of an established order, the end of a world or a civilization, but also the moral energies which allows them to survive
