Testo completoTo provide a tool able to study hydrodynamics phenomena in the melt pool and the vapor capillary during laser welding of tailored blanks, a heat and fluid flow model taking into account the three phases present is proposed. The metal vapor, the liquid phase and the solid base are modeled using the code Comsol Multiphysics. In order to study the evolution of these three phases, coupled equations of heat transfer and Navier-Stokes equations are solved and the liquid-vapor interface is tracked using the level set method. Multiple reflections of the laser are calculated with a new method by describing the laser in its wave form by solving Maxwell's equations. This manuscript presents the results of the model, first, in a case of a static laser shot solved in axisymmetric 2D to achieve the development and initial validation. The influence of parameters such as laser power is studied and the mechanisms leading to the appearance of residual porosities is highlighted. Then, these equations are used in three dimensions to describe the most complete as possible, a fusion line with an opened vapor capillary. All the creation phase of the capillary is analyzed. Calculated temperatures and velocities are compared to experimental measurements. Temperatures in the solid phase are obtained with thermocouples of 25µm, the surface temperature of the melt pool are obtained by pyrometry and finally velocities at the surface of the melt pool are obtained with a high speed camera. These comparisons show the consistency of the model to describe the physical flows, the molten zones shapes and the complete behavior of the vapor capillary

Testo completoFemtosecond Yb–doped fiber lasers are commonly used in industry because of their high average power. This permits to increase the speed of fabrication processes. However, in scientific applications, the vast majority of high-intensity physics experiments are nowadays driven using Ti:Sapphire lasers. The key point in these applications is often the pulse duration and Ti:Sapphire lasers typically generate 30 fs pulses whereas Yb-doped fiber lasers generate only 300 fs pulses because of gain narrowing. In this thesis, we have sought to generate few-cycle pulses (< 10fs) from Yb-doped fiber lasers. First, we optimize the laser architecture by using spectral amplitude shaping in order to counterbalance gain narrowing. This allows to generate 130 fs pulse duration. To obtain even shorter pulses we added a nonlinear compression set-up after the laser, based on self-phase modulation. For high energy, the most commonly used nonlinear medium is gas-filled capillaries. This set-up allows us to generate 15 fs pulse duration. Nevertheless the transmission of the set-up is limited to 50 %.A second scheme is studied which overcomes this limitation: the gas-filled Multi-Pass Cell. We experimentally demonstrate for the first time nonlinear compression of a high-energy Yb-doped fiber source in this novel implementation. The use of this architecture permits to reach high transmission but the compression factor at the output of the set-up is limited by the mirror coatings. To produce few-cycles pulse duration, we combine the two aforementionned schemes, allowing the generation of two-cycle (6.8 fs) pulse duration with a high overall transmission. This global architecture will enable a new generation of high-energy compact few-cycle laser sources

Testo completoDevelopment of a CE-LIF system integrated and application to the analysis of biomolecules SUMMARY: Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) detection is the most sensitive and selective detection technique for Capillary Electrophoresis (CE). Thanks to a new optical arrangement, LIF detection was integrated into a commercial CE instrument : this system uses a ball lens to focus the laser beam on the capillary and a half ellipsoïd placed on the capillary window to collect the fluorescence. The performance of this new arrangement was compared to the existing colinear arrangement commercialized by Picometrics. An application on immunoglobulins analysis was optimized in CE-LIF in order to meet the expectations of the pharmaceuticals products quality control. Two techniques were focused with the new detector : the first one is the analysis of FITC labelled immuoglobulin (488 nm) or of TAMRA labelled immunoglobulin (532 nm), the second one is the analysis of immunoglobulin at 266 nm (native fluorescence)

Testo completoSkin aging is one of the exterior/external signs of the passage of time. With age, the skin becomes drier and gets wrinkled due to the degradation of macromolecules of the extracellular matrix by skin enzymes such as elastase, hyaluronidase and collagenase. The aim of this thesis is to develop miniaturized enzymatic assays by capillary electrophoresis to screen plant extracts and identify new bioactives for cosmetics and skin wellbeing. These assays were developed either outside the capillary (which serves only as a separation tool) or in the capillary (which then serves as an enzymatic nanoreactor) then optimized to allow the determination of kinetic constants (Km, Vmax and IC₅₀). Tranvserse diffusion of laminar flow profiles (TDLFP) was applied to mix the reactants injected into the capillary. Detectors such as laser-induced fluorescence or high-resolution mass spectrometry have been coupled to capillary electrophoresis to achieve high sensitivities of detection and the possibility of identifying the products of the enzymatic reaction. These miniaturized assays were applied to algae extracted by electroporation or to regional plants extracted by green technologies in order to evaluate their biological activity towards skin enzymes. The assays developed are reliable, robust and economic in reactants consumption. Finally, the use of a new analytical technique, microscale thermophoresis, was shown to be very useful and hopeful for the study of enzyme-effector interactions

Testo completoThis work deals with a theoretical study of an optical-field-ionized soft-x-ray laser generated in gas targets (krypton at 32. 8 nm, xenon at 41. 8 nm). These sources are experimentally studied intensively at the LOA (ENSTA, Palaiseau). The amplifying medium is created in a highly nonequilibrium state due to the interaction with a short and intense infrared beam. The steps of creation of the plasma and evolution of the atomic kinetics in the medium were investigated in order to characterize the plasma and to study the amplification and transport of XUV radiation. This latter point was considered depending on different parameters (gas pressure, pump intensity,. . . ). Particular emphasis was placed on the influence of the ion dynamics on the emission line. The ionic component of the OFI plasma is initially strongly coupled. The OCP model applied to this case predicted ion temperatures of the order of a few e V. The properties of the output XUV laser showed that the ionic heating can increase the laser energy up to 20% in the range of pressures of practical interest. On the other hand, simulations based on Maxwell-Bloch equations allowed US to compare the case of very low spatial coherence (AS E) with that of high spatial coherence (injection of harmonics in an OFI amplifier). In this latter case, the semi-adiabatic approximation can describe the amplification over long distances of propagation. Also, the semi-adiabatic approach, allows, even in the case of injected regime, to describe the characteristics of the average values of the XUV signal, but not those of the temporal or spectral profile at saturation

Testo completoTwo stoichiometries have been proposed by different laboratories to interpret measurements on the limiting carbonate complexes of An³⁺ and Ln³⁺ cations. The study of the solubility double carbonates (AlkLn(CO₃)₂, xH₂O) in concentrated carbonate solutions at room temperature and high ionic strengths has shown that on the one hand the lightest lanthanides (La and Nd) form Ln(CO3))⁵⁻₄ whereas the heaviest (Eu and Dy) form Ln(CO3)³⁻₃ in the studied chemical conditions, and on the other hand, that the kinetics of precipitation of double carbonates depends on the alkali metal and the lanthanide ions. The existence of two stoichiometries for the limiting carbonate complexes was confirmed by capillary electrophoresis hyphenated to an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (CE-ICP-MS), used to extend the study to the whole series of lanthanides (except Ce, Pm and Yb). The most anionic species are slower than the least anionic ones while the opposite tendency is expected : this suggests that alkali metals form ion pairs with Ln(CO3)⁵⁻₄ and the ion association increases from Cs+ to Li+. Two behaviours have been put forward comparing the electrophoretic mobilities : La to Tb form Ln(CO3)⁵⁻₄ while Dy to Lu form Ln(CO3)³⁻₃. Measurements by time resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) on Eu(III) indicate small variations of the geometry of Eu(CO3)³⁻₃ complex, specially with Cs+. Although analogies are currently used among the 4f-block trivalent elements, different aqueous speciations are evidenced in concentrated carbonate solutions across the lanthanide series

Testo completoLaser welding of dissimilar metals responds to many actual challenges faced by the manufacturing technology: weight and cost reduction, efficient combination of target materials properties, lifetime extension of the products etc. While numerous experimental and numerical studies were focused on the optimization of weld microstructure to have better mechanical properties, the phenomenology of laser/matter interaction in dissimilar welding has not yet been studied thoroughly. The present work aims to contribute to the comprehension of vapor plume behavior during laser welding of aluminum/titanium couple. For this purpose, high-speed imaging of the plume and the keyhole was combined with emission spectroscopy and commonly used post-mortem mapping of the elemental composition of the melted zone. The originality of this work lies in the exploration of existing image treatment approaches for the quantification of the vapor plume characteristics such as geometrical dimensions, inclination from the vertical, expansion rate, brightness etc. The use of different band-pass filters offered a different perspective on the vapor plume: a thermal plume and an atomically excited plume. The dynamics of the keyhole formation was observed through the fused quartz window, and plume condensates formed on this quartz were analyzed. From spectroscopy of the plume, the nature of evaporating species was studied within a set of spectral regions, some of which allow simultaneous observation of the involvement of both materials into the vaporization process. Moreover, temperature evaluation of the plume was performed for standalone materials and for their combination. The simultaneous use of the mentioned in-situ and post-mortem characterization methods allowed the comprehension of a strong synergetic effect in a butt-welded aluminum/titanium combination. Titanium, being a main vector of heat accumulation due to its high absorption coefficient, induces a strong vapor jet having a particularly high temperature, which promoted an intense involvement of the opposite aluminum side into the keyhole expansion. On another hand, the reflective and conductive aluminum cooled down the interaction zone and accentuated the keyhole instability associated with asymmetric melt ejection and strong spattering. The observed evolving inclination of the vapor jet towards aluminum side was attributed to the progressive change in keyhole curvature on titanium side. In both pulsed and continuous welding, the stability of the keyhole and the vapor plume was enhanced by the laser spot offset on titanium side. On another hand, the beam displacement on aluminum side promoted stronger plume inclination and a significant drop in the vapor temperature. The plume dynamics were very different in overlap configuration, caused by the periodic fluctuations of keyhole occurring at high pulse times. When titanium was placed on aluminum, the vaporization and the keyhole digging suddenly slowed down as the keyhole tip entered the bottom aluminum plate. When aluminum plate was placed on the top, higher laser powers were needed for the keyhole initiation, which also promoted rapid keyhole digging in the bottom titanium plate. The first configuration slowed down the mixing of the elements, and vice versa in the second case. The initiated works on numerical modeling showed that in several mm deep keyholes the beam absorption by metallic vapor slows down the keyhole drilling process and thus should be investigated in more detail. The characterization of the vapor plume by high-speed imaging and emission spectroscopy prepares a field for in-situ control methodologies and accumulates the data necessary for further development of numerical modeling of vapor plume behavior

Testo completoThe acceleration of an externally injected 10MeV electron bunch coming from a RF photoinjector in a high gradient electric field excited in a plasma by a high power laser is studied. In this thesis, the configuration of such an experiment is studied and start to end simulations are presented. As an ultrashort electron bunch (several femtoseconds) is required to maintain a low energy spread beam in the plasma, the 10MeV electron bunch coming from the photoinjector is compressed in two stages. The first stage is realized using a dogleg chicane which compresses the electron bunch to 69fs, the second stage is realized with velocity bunching in the plasma that further compresses the electron bunch to 3fs before efficient acceleration. The electron bunch is transversely focused with a solenoid before being injected into the plasma. A long cell is used to create a plasma starting several Rayleigh lengths before the laser focal plane, allowing the velocity bunching in the first part of the plasma and relaxing constraints on the transverse bunch size. The cell extends several Rayleigh lengths after the laser focal plane to suppress the angular divergence of the electron bunch. We demonstrate that the electron bunch at the exit of the plasma has an energy of more than one hundred MeV, with an emittance smaller than 1 µm, a charge greater than 7pC and a FWHM energy spread smaller than 1.5%. To extend the acceleration section, the guiding of the laser beam with a hollow dielectric capillary is studied, the results show that even in the best matching conditions, the usual laser Gaussian transverse profile is not optimum, mainly because of the diffraction of the laser on the edges at the entrance of the capillary, a flattened Gaussian laser profile is then suggested to suppress this diffraction and the electrons can be accelerated over more than ten Rayleigh lengths

Testo completoThe nature of optical whispering-gallery-mode resonances in a layered microcylinder is investigated numerically by studying the scattering characteristics and the internal electromagnetic fields of a normally-illuminated cladded dielectric fiber calculated using the boundary-value method. Computed resonant mode configurations are compared to the better-known results for homogeneous spheres and cylinders and coated spheres. It is shown that high-Q whispering-gallery-mode resonances can be supported by the curved interface between the core and cladding regions of a layered fiber if the core refractive index is sufficiently greater than that of the outer layer, and that these modes can be directly related to the so-called morphology-dependent resonances of a homogeneous cylinder of the same size and relative refractive index as the fiber core. The implications of these resonant modes for inelastic optical processes are made clear by developing a model for optical emissions from a molecule in the core of a capillary fiber. The results of the model show that the transition rates of molecules in the fiber core and near to the core/cladding interface are enhanced at frequencies corresponding to cavity resonances. It is shown experimentally that these high-Q cavity modes can be excited to above the threshold for laser emission by providing gain in the fiber core material. We have used a refractive dye-doped solvent as a gain medium and a fused-silica capillary to form the resonant cavity. Upon optical excitation of the dye by illuminating the fiber normally with the green beam from a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser, laser emission is emitted from the fiber core in the plane perpendicular to the fiber axis. We explain the novel spatial and spectral dependences of the laser emission in terms of the calculated frequencies and Q-values of the resonant cavity modes and the bulk properties of the cavity medium. We show that the thresholds observed in the laser system can be explained using a simplified rate-equation approach, and that this also explains some of the other observed features of the emissions. The heating of the dye solvent during a laser pulse has an observable effect on the resonance mode locations due to the temperature dependence of the refractive index. We demonstrate the use of observed laser spectra to determine the size and taper of the capillary fiber core.

Testo completoThe interaction of a short (~ 10 - 100 fs) and ultra-intense (> 10^18 W/cm²) laser pulse with an underdense (< 10^19 cm^-3) plasma can accelerate, in a compact way, a fraction of the electrons of the plasma toward relativistic energies (~ 100 - 300MeV). This mechanism, called laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), might have various applications such as the future ultra-high energy electron collider. Prior to this, additional investigations are needed to ensure, through LWFA, a stable and reproducible generation of electron bunches of high quality, i.e. low transverse and longitudinal emittances. In this thesis, the stability and the reproducibility of the electron self-injection were experimentally investigated in 8-20mm long, dielectric capillary tubes, with an internal radius of 76-89 µm, and filled with pure H2 at an electronic density of de (10 +/- 1.5)x10^18 cm^-3. Electron bunches were produced, at a rate of two shots per minute, with an accelerated charge above 40 MeV of (66+/-7) pC, a mean energy of (65+/-6) MeV, a divergence of (9+/-1) mrad, and a pointing fluctuation of 2.3 mrad. Three sources were identified for the fluctuations and drifts of the electron bunch properties: laser energy drift, change of the electron number density upramp, and laser pointing fluctuations. Restrictions on the operating regime were proposed in order to improve the stability and the reproducibility of the laser-plasma electron source. An alternative mechanism of electron injection into the plasma wave was also investigated: the ionization-induced injection. An experimental study demonstrated that electron bunches generated in a mixture of 99%H2 + 1%N2 have twice more accelerated charge than in the case of pure H2. Moreover, the earlier onset of electron injection was observed for the mixture 99%H2 + 1%N2, indicating that the first electrons were trapped under the mechanism of ionization-induced injection. Particle-In-Cell simulations performed with the code WARP confirm the experimental results and suggest that the self-injection was inhibited by the ionization-induced injection
