Testo completoIn physical Human-Robot Interaction, where robots and humans collaborate on shared tasks through physical contact, such as between the robot's end effector and the human's hand, human safety is a primary concern. This necessitates that the collaborative system inherently consider human characteristics to provide appropriate and safe robotic assistance. To achieve this, it is necessary to evaluate the capabilities of the human upper-limb. In biomechanics, these capabilities are defined through force feasible sets at the hand, which represent all the forces a human operator can exert in a given posture. These three-dimensional sets are influenced by individual factors such as anthropometry and muscle strength and the surface of these sets represents the maximum force capabilities of the human upper-limb in all directions. Therefore, force feasible sets are an invaluable tool for guiding robotic assistance, ensuring it respects biomechanical constraints by remaining within the human's exertable force limits.Force feasible sets are challenging to measure directly but can be partially represented in isometric conditions by measuring maximum exerted forces. Musculoskeletal models, which mathematically represent the human skeleton, joints, and muscles, allow for in silico representation of force feasible sets in various postures through geometric operations (Minkowski sum, projection, intersection) on convex sets. However, these operations are computationally expensive. This thesis first focuses on a novel approach to reduce the computational time of one of the most demanding tasks within this framework.Furthermore, existing in silico models often employ various geometric assumptions about how muscle tensions contribute to joint torques, leading to different characterizations of force feasible sets' shapes, including 3D polytopes and ellipsoids. This thesis proposes a unified framework to represent force feasible sets that explicitly incorporates these geometric assumptions. This framework addresses the limitations of current numerical simulations, which struggle to analyze complex scenarios involving more detailed representation of musculoskeletal models and inherently higher computational costs. In this regard, accurate representation of individual force capabilities requires precise parameterization of musculoskeletal model components. Given the set-theoretic nature of force feasible sets, this thesis introduces an adapted sensitivity analysis tailored to assess the influence of parameters on the geometric properties of force feasible sets. This analysis also highlights the challenges of personalizing musculoskeletal models due to biomechanical inter-variability.Finally, an experimental protocol was established to confront in silico personalization processes with experimentally measured maximal isometric force exertions collected across various postures. Through biomechanical assumptions leading to a computationally less expensive representation of force feasible sets as ellipsoids, muscle parameters personalization is achieved, validating in vivo the theoretically-driven results of this thesis

Testo completoThe aim of this work is the study of estimation capacities of muscular strength as well as the impact of disruptive factors. In order to answer this aim, 3 studies were realized without external feedback so as to carry out a diagnostic evaluation and analyse the reproducibility of estimation capacities as well as to quantify the effects of long and short-term disruptions. The recordings of mechanical parameters (isokinetic dynamometer), neurophysiologic (EMG) and different determined strength levels at the target-values of 25, 50 and 75% would allow studying the estimation capacities of muscular strength. First, different estimation capacities were underlined following the mode and velocity of tested muscular action. The reproductible characters of these estimations as well as the abilities of adaptation were established. A correction of the erroneous estimations in the dynamic mode is also observed. Second, following the submaximal isometric training protocol, a specificity of mode of muscular action and percentage of training was observed. Finally, in the shorter time, after a muscular fatigue exercise, the estimation capacities would adapt according to the contractile state of the muscle. On the other hand, they were strongly disrupted during the realization of the cognitive task implying so a cortical overload. The superior centers would seem to be the basis of estimation of muscular strength, with a contribution of peripheral mechanisms
Fortin, Anne-Marie.
Training of adults suffering from myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM 1) has specificities still unknown. The purpose of this research is therefore to verify the impact of a periodized training program targeted on muscle strength, cardiorespiratory endurance as well as improving functional capacities in adults with DM1. Nine participants (4 women and 5 men) aged 47.8 ± 4.6 years completed an 8-week training program combining strength training, cardiorespiratory endurance training and functional exercises. Comparing the results of the group before and after the 8 weeks of training, we noticed a significant improvement (p<0.05) for 4 of the 6 RM muscular strength tests and a tendency to improve the functional capacity. The duration of the project, the absence of a control group and the small number of participants mean that a careful interpretation of the results is required. Despite these constraints, it remains that the preliminary results obtained are very promising.

Testo completoKnees muscular groups (Quadriceps, Hamstring) are very widely studied and they present an important percentage of footballers injuries. The objective of this thesis is to study the effects of isokinetic fatigue exercises during concentric and eccentric contractions on hamstring function, as well as the identification of possible muscular imbalance and prediction of hamstring injury in dominant leg. A total of 39 senior male footballers (10 injured, 29 non injured) aged 22,5 ± 3 years were tested. In a first step, tests were applied on 5 Concentric and eccentric peak Torque, of quadriceps and hamstring muscles of dominant leg of both footballers groups using Biodex isokinetic dynamometer at angular velocities of 90°/sec. In a second step, we made the tests on 25 Concentric and eccentric peak Torque at angular velocities of 120°/sec for both muscular groups. A week interval between both tests. A flexibility test was assessed for 20 subjects, where 10 of them were injured. The force developed by the concentric peak torque in the case of injured soccer players was a significantly weaker than that of non injured ones (p < 0,05), as well as, an ipsilatéral conventional ratio on eccentric mode(p< 0,05). During fatigue exercises, we noticed for non injured subjects, that both tested muscular groups get tired significantly more in concentric than eccentric mode, while hamstring muscular was fatigued in eccentric contractions in injured soccer players (p < 0,05). We also observed a significant difference for a functional, and concentric conventional ratios comparing injured and non injured soccer players (p < 0,05). Eccentric ipsilatéral ratio presented a significant difference between the two groups of subjects. We have also found a muscular fatigue imbalance in subjects that were injured in the past, concerning conventional ratio in eccentric mode (p < 0,05). To conclude, fatigue and strength isokinetic muscle evaluation at (120°, 90° /sec) were complementary, and both of them represent the best predictor of hamstring muscle injury, by revealing muscle fatigue and torque asymmetry. Correction of muscular imbalance for both muscular groups in the two contraction modes, and increase of fatigue and strength functional and conventional ratio (hamstring -to- quadriceps), particularly those that presented previous hamstring muscle injury, improvement of hamstring flexibility, is essential to decrease injury risk factors and improve the performance

Testo completoThe ability to maintain balance has previously been associated with the structure and mechanical properties of the tendons of the lower limb. In order to evaluate the effects of training intensity (moderate vs. high intensity) and age on changes in tendon architecture (Achilles and patellar) and its mechanical properties, 10 young men and 27 sedentary seniors participated in a 12-week resistance training program (3 times/week) on the muscles of the triceps surae (TS) an quadriceps (QF). The young group and a senior group participated in a moderate training program corresponding to 55% of IRM (maximum repetition), while a second group of seniors received a training intensity of 80% of IRM. Each group received the same volume of training on the TS and QF muscles using guided weight machines. The use of ergometers, ultrasound and MRI images and a motion capture system were required. A decrease in strength, coupled or not depending on the tendon under consideration, and a decrease in the properties of the tendon material have been quantified with age. Evolution curves of each of the QF and TS muscles for both populations were constructed. The two training conditions showed an improvement in the mechanical properties of the Achilles and patellar tendons, and more significantly the Achilles, on both populations without any additional gain for a high intensity. Similar gains after training between the two intensities could be observed in seniors on muscle volumes. The improvement of postural stability and an evolution of the strategy during a chair lift were observed in seniors without any additional benefit between the two training intensities. This made it possible to quantify the effects of age on muscle, tendon and movement abilities by highlighting a threshold of training intensity (55% of IRM) from which seniors do not seem to show any additional gain. This work therefore makes it possible to propose an optimization of the physical activity prescribed to the elderly person

Testo completoAbstract: Purpose: The purposes of this study were 1) to describe lower limbs muscle strength and mobility capacities, and 2) to explore the respective contribution of lower limb muscle weaknesses on mobility in the adult and late-onset phenotypes of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of part of the results of a larger study, whose purpose was to identify social participation and quality-of-life determinants in 200 DM1 patients (158 adult and 42 late-onset). The strength of four lower limb muscle groups was assessed using manual muscle testing (MMT) and handheld dynamometry quantitative muscle testing (QMT). Mobility capacities were assessed using standardized tests (Berg balance scale, 10 Meter Walk Test and Timed Up & Go). Results: Although the late-onset phenotype showed less weaknesses and mobility limitations than the adult phenotype (p <0.001-0.020), and although MMT showed no weakness in the late-onset phenotype, quantitative strength losses of 12-20% were measured in this phenotype, with the exception of the knee flexors. These weaknesses led to mobility limitations in 22-48% of participants with the late-onset phenotype. In the adult phenotype, muscle strength impairment was slightly more important distally than proximally (2-2.5/10 and 5.8-8.2% for MMT and QMT, respectively) (p <0.001-0.002). According to those results, the adult and late-onset phenotypes show different profiles of lower limb impairment, and should not be pooled for data analysis. A general progression of quantitative muscle weakness and of mobility scores was observed according to the Muscular Impairment Rating Scale (MIRS) classification. Quantitative weaknesses, with the exception of the knee flexors, and mobility limitations were observed from the first MIRS grades. QMT is therefore definitely a more effective tool for measuring weakness in DM1. Finally, ankle dorsiflexors and knee extensors seem to be good indicators of lower limb function in DM1. Conclusion: This study allowed a better characterization of lower limb weaknesses and mobility limitations in the adult and late-onset phenotypes of DM1, and explored the contribution of lower limb weaknesses on mobility capacities in this population. These results will be useful for developing more specific rehabilitation programs and for optimizing the evaluation of these impairments in the context of the upcoming therapeutic trials. Keywords: Myotonic dystrophy type 1, phenotypes, muscle strength, mobility capacities, lower limbs, explanatory variables, physiotherapy.

Testo completo“Water-in-salt” solvents are a new class of electrolytes with very promising electrochemical properties for energy storage applications. The purpose of this work is to understand the microscopic mechanisms of these superconcentrated electrolytes at play. We use atomistic molecular dynamics to simulate systems of water in LiTFSI at various salt concentrations. On the basis of comparisons of simulated and measured dynamic properties, i.e. the viscosity, diffusion coefficient and conductivity, we systematic test and develop the force fields used for the ions. As a consequence, an optimized force field is proposed, which enables the accurate modeling of such systems. The structural properties are systematically investigated on various aspects for the salt at a superconcentrated state, which shed new light on the connections between ions and water molecules. Apart from these simulations of the bulk electrolytes, we also study the water-in-salt electrolyte at interfaces, in which the capacitive performance of this electrolyte in supercapacitors are explored. The differential capacitance displays a number of nontrivial features accompanying a series of peaks in the potential region from 0 to 3 V. The study of structural evolutions of the interfacial electrolytes shows that many structural changes occur in the layer of adsorbed liquid when the potential of the electrode is changed, which are at the origin of those observed peaks in the differential capacitance

Testo completoThis thesis examines the role of building partner medical capacity to strengthen foreign security forces as part of Stability Operations. It employs quantitative analysis and Game Theory. With the direct benefits of a strong and effective security force medical system established, the indirect benefits of a strong security force medical system to a nation-state, to a region, and to the United States are discussed. Joint doctrine that supports efforts to build partner medical capacity is also reviewed. Finally, a framework is proposed for strengthening partner security force medical systems through the use of advisors, exercises and training, and a rotational presence. Medical development for foreign security forces should be a priority of any effort to strengthen a foreign state partner.

The notion of clustering, defined as the localized value-creating system that comprises complementary firms, universities, investors and other private or public institutions, has become of critical importance for regional innovation policies. This thesis explores regional innovative capacity in Italy, where industrial districts or clusters of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have represented a strong economic force responsible for the country's economic vitality and growth. In order to respond to the changing global economic environment, that is challenging Italian regional clusters to achieve sustainable growth, a new notion of meta-cluster has recently emerged. Metaclusters extend the traditional definition to encompass the entire value chain of an industrial cluster. The thesis argues that the notion of meta-clusters is key to the future innovative activities, given the nature of relations between government, university and industry in Italy, the underlying fabric of the country's economic system and a number of case studies of SMEs. Meta-clusters will not involve improbable developments in new technologies disconnected from the local resources, but rather will leverage and enhance existing value chains through new process, technologies and innovation strategies. Part of the argument assumes a prominent role of regional institutions, as the catalysts for innovation upgrades, and of financial intermediaries, as the glue in the development of stronger relationships between industry, government and universities.

Testo completoThe decrease of transistor’s gate length was the key driver of the development of microelectronic integrated circuits in recent decades. However, this development of microelectronic circuits has led to a greater density of interconnection lines, generating high losses, slowdowns and crosstalk on the transmitted signals, and an increase of the parasitic impedance of interconnections lines. The latter is detrimental to the power integrity of the active components in the circuit. Its increase increases the risk of developing numerical errors leading to a system’s malfunction. It is therefore necessary to reduce the impedance of the power distribution network of integrated circuits. To do this, the decoupling capacitors are used and placed hierarchically on different floors of the circuits and in their entirety (PCB, package, interposer, chip). These doctoral works are in the context of recent developments in new 3D integration solutions in microelectronics and they carry on studying new 3D capacitors, highly integrated, presenting high capacitance values (> 1 nF), and developed by using the depth of silicon interposeur level. Inspired from the Through Silicon Vias (TSV), these newly developed 3D capacitors are named Through Silicon Capacitors (TSC). They are a key element for improving the performance of the power integrated circuits because they can efficiently reduce the consumption of circuits thanks to their direct integration in silicon interposer which is used to stack chips. These 3D components allow tor reach high capacitance density up to 35 nF/mm². The issues are strategic for high speed embedded applications and more generally in an economic and societal environment aware of our energy limits. Moreover these decoupling capacitors must operate at frequencies up to 2 GHz or 4 GHz, which tend to maximize the parasitic effects which affect the energy efficiency of power distribution networks. This is made possible by optimizing their integration and by the use of copper layers with a good conductivity higher than 45 MS / m conductivity as electrodes. The technologies used to fabricate the TSC are developed by CEA-LETI and STMicroelectronics. The electrical behavior of those TSC remained hitherto little known and their performances difficult to quantify. The studies conducted in this thesis were to model these new components by taking into account the material and geometrical parameters in order to know the parasitic effects. The established electrical models have faced electrical characterizations carried out over a wide frequency range (DC to 40 GHz). This work allow to optimize the TSC architecture and their integration in a power distribution network (Power Distribution Network - NDS) prove that they are good candidate for decoupling operations

This thesis, performed in the context of a European pro gram deals with the effect oftemperature on the forming capacities ofvarious magnesium alloys sheets. At room temperature, mechanical properties are strongly influenced by the crystallographic texture. Over a critical temperature which depends on the tested alloy, the forming capacity is enhanced and it has been attributed to the activation of new glide systems possibly associated with dynamic recrystallisation or to a significant contribution of grain boundary sliding. Strain localisation and damage have also been studied thanks to the use of digital images correlation and X-ray microtomogaphy. Finally, forming tests have been carried out thanks to the development of a mini deep-drawing device

Testo completoIn this study, we consider the problem of production planning in the semiconductor industry characterized by high mix low volume production, reentrant flows and complex manufacturing process. The aim of this work is to establish a feasible production schedule that takes into account the limited capacity of the manufacturing system, equipment qualifications constraints and delivery due dates. In this context, we have formulated the objective and constraints in a mixed linear program (MIP). The objective of the MIP is to minimize delivery delays to guarantee on-time delivery. While executing different tests of the MIP, we have reached a limit of resolution in a reasonable time. Thus, we use an approximate method to solve the problem. The results show the effectiveness of the heuristic established as solution quality and time resolution. The obtained results led to an industrial application and a software that provides feasible schedules in reduced execution time in a specific fab

Testo completoThe important growth of RFID goes along with the development of many technologies which complement the current offer by adding new possibilities. The chipless RFID is a perfect example of such technology. The purpose of the approach is to considerably reduce the price of the tag while increasing the data encoding capacity in order to compete with the barcode. The RF link between the tag and the reader also permit a flexible reading. In order to increase the coding capacity of a chipless tag, this PHD work proposes a new coding method based on the overall shape of the electromagnetic signature. To do this, we must be able design tags for which the RCS is given in advance, which amounts to the resolution of an inverse problem. A method based on the decomposition of the RCS on a base of resonators is proposed. The main characteristics of these base elements (amplitude, frequency, quality factor) are controlled by geometric parameters

Testo completoDynamis is a key word in the Greek thought, not only in philosophy, in which it has assumed a particular significance since Aristotle, but also in medicine, the natural sciences and mathematics. The present work aims to present the translation equivalents adopted by the Latin authors and translators in classical antiquity and in late or medieval Latin, according to a twofold approach. First, from an onomasiological perspective, we try to identify and analyse the different ways dynamis (as well as the words semantically connected to it) appears in a corpus of Latin texts, from Plautus’ comedies to Boethius’ translation of Aristotle’s Organon : as a loan word, a formal neologism, a transposition or, as in most cases, a translation. Second, from a semasiological perspective, we focus on the impact of the translation from Greek on a lexical group made of Latin words frequently used to translate dynamis, namely potestas (“possibility, power”), potentia (“potentiality, potency”), uis (“strength, violence”) and uirtus (“value, quality, virtue”). The uses of these words in a corpus of literary and scientific texts are examined, and the question is raised of how far they may be considered as semantic calques from the Greek term dynamis. The work thus aims to reconstruct a moment in the history of the Greek notion : that of its “conversion” into Latin, which was decisive for its expression in modern languages, in French as puissance, potentialité, vertu, virtualité, etc., in English as potency, potentiality, virtue, virtuality, etc

Testo completoIn fields like rehabilitation, sports sciences and ergonomics, the evaluation of the force feasible set (FFS) of the human limbs may help to better understand the human motor abilities. The aim of this thesis was to compare the upper-limb force capacity at the hand predicted by two different kinds of FFS formalism. The first one originating from the robotics field was used to compute the force ellipsoid (FE), scaled force ellipsoid (SFE), force polytope (FP) and scaled force polytope (SFP). For one posture, they are computed from the upper-limb model and hypotheses and data on maximum isometric joint torques. The second one permitted to compute the FFS modeled as a force polytope from a musculoskeletal model (MSFP). All the previously mentioned models were compared with a measured force polytope (MFP). To construct it, the maximum isometric forces exerted at the hand were assessed in twenty-six directions of the Cartesian space. Then, the MSFP was applied to the manual wheelchair propulsion in order to characterize the forces applied on the handrim during this task and a new evaluation index of postural performance (IPP) was also introduced

The materials studied are made of A1050-H14 and A6061-O aluminium alloys. Mechanical characterizations have been performed through uniaxial tensile and shear tests. An elasticplastic finite element models based on isotropic and anisotropic yield criteria were developed. These models were enhanced by the integration of the damage in simulation. Experiments were conducted to verify the reliability of the developed finite element models. First, the effect of the clearance thickness ratio on the hole-flanging process was studied. A methodology was made to distinguish two conditions of the process: hole-flanging with and without ironing. Then, the effect of material anisotropy assumptions on the predictive accuracy of finite element simulations of the hole-flanging process was quantified. The study was then focused on the determination of the limits of hole-flanging process arising from material failure. For that purpose, a fracture criterion was calibrated and used in simulations to predict the damage of the flange. Finally, the damage occurrence in flanged edge was characterized by using the coupled approach of Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman

Testo completoThe continuous decreasing size of integrated circuits in the field of microelectronics is now applied to passive components such as MIM (Metal/Insulator/Metal) capacitors. To increase the capacitance density of MIM capacitors, new materials with high permittivity are required to replace silica (Si02, E = 3. 9). Zr02 permittivity is around 47 for the tetragonal phase. Zr02 is deposited by PEALD. We studied the Zr02 deposition method with TEMAZ and ZyALD precursors. Thermodynamic properties of TEMAZ have been analyzed by Knudsen cell mass spectrometry. PEALD process parameters and post-treatments influence on the tetragonal zirconia synthesis have been investigated. Various characterisation methods (XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, SIMS, XPS, electrical characterisation) were employed to establish an optimum between Zr02 films properties and deposition process performance

Testo completoIn 2009, to attack the financial and political support structure of the growing insurgency in Afghanistan, the FBI created the Major Crimes Task Force-Afghanistan (MCTF-A). However, within approximately two years, the FBI had withdrawn its personnel from the task force, and the MCTF-A’s efforts to counter corruption within the highest levels of the Karzai government were at the center of a highly public diplomatic row that changed the strategic direction of U.S. national security objectives for Afghanistan and the region. Was the outcome predictable and can lessons be captured by examining the FBI’s experience with the MCTF-A, and should the FBI ever consider attempting to build capacity in post-conflict or developing nations? The FBI is now being asked by U.S. government partners to build similar rule of law (ROL) capacity-building programs around Africa and the Middle East. Through the MCTF-A case study, a set of cultural, legal and political criteria was developed for evaluating potential capacity-building partners and programs. This thesis proposes a repeatable and structured process to help the FBI evaluate potential capacity-building partners, and design an end-based, sustainable law enforcement capacity-building program and build capable counterterrorism partners while improving the nation’s entire ROL framework.

Testo completoDifferents strenght trainning (ST) are associated with distincts muscles tissues responses that comprised maximum strenght, power and/or reactive force. Among these different ST programmes there are traditional strenght training (GT), power (GP) and reactive force (GR) which is present in stretch-shortening cycle (SSC). In this context, for fast force production is necessary that IIX type fibers being recruited, condiction that to be seem decreasing among elderly women population. Furthermore, fast production of force has significant importance for all ages, however this condition could be considerate more significant for elderly women population. Consequently, prescrition of ST associated with improving activities of daily living (ADL) have been evidenciated as a important pathway for physical independence, as well as, for elderly quality of life. Thus, the mayor aim of this study was to verifiy and compare neuromuscular, morphological and functional adaptations in a sample of elderly women which were submitted in three different ST programmes. The methodology used in the first study was a sistematic literature review included classics studies about ST in this population. These studies were selected by two international scientic database (Pubmed and Sportdiscus); were published since 2000 until now and to show a comparation between at least two different kinds of ST. For the second study, 58 inactivity elderly women was randomized between control (GC=17) and experimental group (GE=41) and after submitted over a six weeks of ST. The relationship between muscle quality assesment with up foot and go and 30- second chair stand functional test was realized. Subjects included in GE showed significant improvement of quadricips muscle quality (14.8%), as well as, muscle quality showed significant strong association with 30-second chair stand (r=0.62, p< 0.001) and up foot and go (r= -0.72, p< 0.001) functional tests. For the third study, the GC was maintenced while GE was again randomized between GT (14), GP (13) and GR (14). 1 RM of knee extention, muscles thickness, activation, onset, reaction time, rate development force tests and working out as the sit and stand and countermovement jumps were measured. Results of this study showed that GR was more effective than GT and GP when comprised rectus thigh muscle onset, initial periods of production of strenght rate, reaction time and muscles function tests (p <0.05). Finnaly, considerating results of these studies we concluded that GR training was more effective when considerated fast force production of muscle if compared with other specifics ST programmes. Consequently this study suggest GR as a better ST programm for improving functional capapcities in a sample of elderaly women.

Testo completoWith the intensive use of modern microelectronic devices in numerous areas, there is an increasing demand for non-volatile memories. FeRAM (ferroelectric random access memory) is one of the most potential next-generation memories for its ultra-low power consumption and high read/write rate. Among various ferroelectrics, PZT (Pb(Zr1-x,Tix)O3) exhibits high remnant polarization and low coercive field, which make it a promising candidate for FeRAM.In this dissertation, PZT(52/48) layers of various thicknesses (from 33 nm to 200 nm) have been epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 substrate, with a SrRuO3 interlayer as bottom electrode, using two deposition methods for comparison: sol-gel and sputtering. Three different conductive materials (SrRuO3, Pt and ITO) have been deposited as top electrode. The objective was a detailed study of the electrical and ferroelectric properties of these MFM (metal-ferroelectric-metal) capacitors, with a particular investigation of the influence of elaboration conditions and electrode material on leakage currents and domain switching dynamics.Sputtered and sol-gel-derived PZT capacitors showed similar properties: Above a minimum workable thickness of about 100 nm for a 100 × 100 μm2 PZT capacitor, they showed low leakage current, high maximum relative permittivity (600 - 1300) and high remnant polarization (30 - 40 μC/cm2). The dominant leakage current mechanisms were identified by fitting the results, showing different contributions as a function of electric field. PFM (piezoresponse force microscopy) characterizations confirmed the existence of ferroelectric domains of opposite directions. Coercive field was found to be highly dependent on work frequency. Besides, imprint properties were found to be dependent on top electrode, annealing procedure and bottom electrode thickness
