Exercise Is Medicine® On Campus (EIM-OC) is a worldwide initiative from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to promote physical activity (PA) at universities. California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) implemented this initiative in Fall 2019 with offerings to students and employees. For employees, an “Introduction to Resistance Training Class” was offered. Participants attended classes two times per week, with the sessions lasting approximately fifty minutes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the EIM-OC employee Introduction to Resistance Training class for its effectiveness on increasing PA, self-efficacy, and outcome expectancy. The research design was pre-post, with participants completing online questionnaires before and after the course. The Godin Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (LTPQ), Resistance Training Self-Efficacy and Outcome Expectancy Questionnaire, and Self-Efficacy and the Maintenance of Exercise Participation in Older Adults Questionnaire were included. The training class had a total of 14 female participants, 12 of which completed the pre- and post-questionnaires. There was a significant increase (t=-3.2, df=11, p=.004) in resistance training self-efficacy score following the course (M=3.52±1.03 versus M=4.31±.56). Resistance training outcome expectancy score was also statistically significant (t=-2.54, df=11, p=.01) following the course (M=4.48±.53 versus M=4.71±.37). There were increases in strenuous exercise days, physical activity scores, and future resistance training self-efficacy, although they were not statistically significant. The results of this study indicate that employee exercise classes, as part of the EIM-OC initiative, can be effective in increasing resistance training self-efficacy, and outcome expectancy. These indicators are important for individuals to maintain lifelong PA therefore future programming and research on EIM-OC should continue. Abstract Background: Each year ~12,000 female breast cancers are diagnosed in US women ages 18-45 with overrepresentation of aggressive cancers, advanced stage disease at diagnosis, and inferior outcomes. The American College of Radiology and American Society of Breast Surgeons recommend that breast cancer risk assessment (RA) start no later than age 30 to identify high-risk individuals in whom to initiate screening earlier. However, RA tools are currently utilized in as few as 3-26% of eligible women. Methods: Our study aims are to assess feasibility, reach, acceptability, and appropriateness of customized strategies to increase uptake of breast cancer RA. We identified barriers to increasing utilization of RA tools through discussions with long-term community partners in the Tennessee Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program (TBCSP), a three-phase adapted Feasibility of Intervention Measure (FIM) in five health clinics, and one-on-one interviews guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research with 24 providers in public health settings and 37 interviews guided by the Health Belief Model with Black women age 30-50 years with no personal history of breast cancer. Interview data contributed to the development of a conceptual framework to depict influences of provider behavior in the utilization of breast cancer risk assessment. Using the CFIR-ERIC Matching Tool and working with the study’s Community Advisory Board (CAB), the research team identified three potential strategies to increase the use of breast cancer RA in public health settings. Findings: Selected strategies included having a site champion for each clinic, offering a short series of education modules, and distributing print educational materials including a provider education sheet and patient-facing information cards. These strategies were further revised in collaboration with the CAB and patients and providers in Community Engagement Studios. Implications for D&I Research: This project demonstrates the contributions of a long-standing relationship with a state-wide public health agency, implementation science tools, and collaboration with community advisors for identifying and addressing barriers to breast cancer RA. The study has generated replicable scripts for educating providers and community-informed reproducible patient education materials to increase breast cancer RA. Evaluation of the impact of these strategies on provider behavior in six clinical settings is currently underway. Chrysanthemum white rust (CWR) is a quarantine-significant pest in the United States (Title 7, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 319.37-2). The causal agent of CWR, Puccinia horiana Henn., is an autoecious, microcyclic rust that is pathogenic on chrysanthemum species (Chrysanthemum spp.) and close relatives within the family Asteraceae. CWR is indigenous to Japan, where it was first reported in 1895 (4). By the 1960s, CWR was found throughout Europe and later spread to Africa, Oceana, South America, and other parts of Asia. In North America, CWR was reported in Mexico and in the United States (New Jersey and Pennsylvania [1977], Oregon and Washington [1990], and California [1991]). Additional detections of CWR were later reported in 22 Pennsylvania counties (2004, 2006 to 2010) (3). These later Pennsylvania reports stated that eradication was attempted at some sites, but unconfirmed observations suggested that the rust pathogen might overwinter in volunteer plants (3). Since “CWR is known to overwinter in Europe where chrysanthemums overwinter (average minimum temperatures ranging from –10°F to 10°F)” (2), the unconfirmed Pennsylvania observations prompted us to determine if P. horiana can overwinter in Pennsylvania. During October 2010, we identified CWR on perennial mums planted at six outdoor garden locations in University Park, PA. Symptomatic plants were quarantined and eradication attempted. Eradicated sites were routinely surveyed and CWR confirmed in July 2011 on volunteer plants at two of the originally infested sites. An additional outdoor garden site with CWR was observed in State College, PA, during October 2011 and eradication attempted. The three infested sites were surveyed throughout the fall and winter of 2011 to 2012. During February 2012, two asymptomatic volunteer plants arising from root pieces were collected from each of the three sites. Each sample was washed with tap water to remove excess soil, examined morphologically, surface sterilized with 10% bleach, and divided into two subsamples. One subsample from each site was divided into crown and root portions and DNA extracted using a Qiagen DNeasy Plant Mini Kit. Molecular analysis was performed using modifications of published primers ITS 5 and Rust1 (1,4). Puccinia horiana was detected in plant roots from one site and in plant crowns from two sites. The remaining two subsamples from each site were transplanted into sterilized potting soil and placed in a clean controlled environment chamber at 18°C and 85% relative humidity (RH). After 6 weeks, six actively growing plants were transferred to a second clean controlled environment chamber at 17°C and 90 to 100% RH. On 6 April 2012, CWR symptoms and signs were confirmed morphologically on two plants that had been removed from one site. On 19 April 2012, CWR signs and symptoms were confirmed morphologically and by molecular analysis on leaves of volunteer plants at one University Park site. DNA extractions were sequenced and shared a 100% maximum identity to a known P. horiana accession (EU816920.1) in GenBank. Objectives: Nearly all US schools have a website that enables them to inform about and promote physical activity (PA) and physical education (PE). We performed a cross-sectional content analysis of California (state with the most charters) elementary charter school websites' PA/PE content. Methods: We analyzed data (N = 520 schools) using descriptive statistics and cross tabulations to identify associations among school characteristics and the mentioning of PE, PE curriculum, PE teacher, recess, interscholastic sport, and other extracurricular PA. Results: Over a third (39%) of websites did not mention providing either PA or PE opportunities at all. Only 30.6% of websites mentioned PE (mandated by state education code to be delivered for 200 min/10 days to students in grades 1-6). Websites also infrequently mentioned Fitnessgram scores (36.5%), required by state education code to be reported for 5th graders, as well as recess (30.2%), other extracurricular PA (20.4%), and interscholastic sport (16.5%). Conclusions: Schools did not use the full potential of their websites to inform constituents about PA or to promote it on campus. Deficient schools should expand the PE/PA content information available on their websites and be held accountable for such by their parent school district..

Guaranteed admission programs are a type of college access program that provide students who meet certain criteria (e.g., a minimum GPA) with guaranteed admission to one or more colleges. This paper studies guaranteed admission agreements between California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) and its local school district to evaluate if smaller scale, local guaranteed admission programs have comparable impacts on college enrollment rates to previously studied state-wide programs. Employing a regression discontinuity (RD) design around the program’s GPA cutoff conditional on students satisfying other program requirements, this paper finds that the program significantly increased enrollment at CSUSM and at any California State University (CSU) and increased (not significantly) the likelihood of students enrolling at four-year institutions compared to two-year alternatives. In addition, the program disproportionally affected students from underrepresented backgrounds (e.g., first-generation, nonwhite, and low-income backgrounds), suggesting that local guaranteed admission programs also have the potential to increase representation at four-year public institutions and encourage underrepresented students to enroll at higher-quality postsecondary institutions. This essay discusses the major financial and organizational challenges facing California’s higher education system, and offers a possible pathway to reforms. Most critics and observers of California’s system remain focused on incremental and largely marginal improvements, transfixed by the state’s persistent financial problems and inability to engage in long-range planning for a population that is projected to grow from approximately 37 million to some 60 million by 2050. A number of studies indicate that California’s higher education system will not keep pace with labor needs in the state, let alone affording opportunities for socioeconomic mobility that once characterized California. California needs a “re-imagined” network of colleges and universities and a plan for “Smart Growth.”

This study employs descriptive qualitative analysis to explore the experiences of eight Mexican American veterans utilizing Veterans Affairs education benefits to pursue baccalaureate degrees. Participants were recruited in Southern California at two California Community Colleges and three California State Universities. The findings suggest that Mexican American student veterans navigate college and their education benefits based on their experiences in the military. The study identifies five factors Mexican American student veterans negotiate when transitioning to college: (a) minimization of racism; (b) lack of support; (c) being experiential learners; (d) substitute leadership; and (e) being financially motivated.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the state of police education in California. There is limited national data on the topic and this study aims to improve our knowledge by studying the state with the highest number of law enforcement officers in the USA. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 162 local law enforcement agencies (police and sheriffs’ departments) in California completed a 32-question electronic survey about police education and training. Findings – Findings reveal that California agencies are more likely than agencies nationwide to offer incentives to encourage officers to pursue higher education. Although most departments require only a high school diploma, 35 percent of sworn officers are college graduates. Most college-educated officers are employed by medium and large sized agencies in urban counties which pay above-average salaries. Research limitations/implications – This paper demonstrates how the prevalence of educated police officers varies and that higher education requirements do not adversely affect the hiring of female officers. It also provides insight from police managers regarding their concerns about requiring a four-year degree and perceptions of whether college-educated officers are actually better officers than non-college-educated officers. Practical implications – Research findings may be instructive to police managers wanting to increase the number of sworn officers in their agency who hold a college degree. Originality/value – It adds to the literature by describing the education level of police officers in California and providing information about the educational requirements and incentives offered to officers by law enforcement agencies. No previous study has addressed this topic, even though California employs 12 percent of all sworn peace officers in the USA.

In this paper we focus on California high school students’ transition to community colleges. Our unique dataset tracks five cohorts of California high school juniors into their freshmen year at in-state community colleges. We evaluate the extent to which high school achievement tests (currently not utilized by community colleges in course placement decisions) are useful for predicting academic success at community college. In addition, given persistent disparities in college attainment by race, we explore whether this fundamental relationship between high school achievement, college course-taking, and performance differs for students from different racial/ethnic backgrounds.

The authors examine the successful efforts to set up the first department of Mexican American Studies, possibly the first Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) in the California State University system, the establishment of a community center, and a Black and Brown House on the campus. The article details the negotiations among administrators, students, faculty, staff, and community. The goal is to highlight how the background of the East Los Angeles Blowouts, the response to the Vietnam War, the reaction to police violence, and the rise of La Raza Unida Party were central to the success of establishing these academic and university programs. At the same time, the essay underscores how these constituencies, given their divergent interests, were able to shift the institution. The authors use archival documentation and oral histories to demonstrate their points.

Social isolation and widespread confinement in many countries has caused a decrease in physical activity (PA) and an increase in levels of stress, anxiety and depression. The purpose in life is part of the psychological well-being of people, and having a clear purpose allows them to face adversity. In this sense, the influence of PA on psychological well-being in confinement situations makes it necessary to study and promote it by educational and government entities. The objective of this work was to evaluate the incidence of an intervention program with PA (Move at home) on the purpose in life during a period of mandatory confinement due to COVID-19. 360 university students divided into three groups participated: control (Sedentary, Thirst), and experimental (group with low physical activity, BAct, and physically active, Act). The experimental groups underwent a PA intervention program for 11 weeks, from the beginning to the end of the mandatory confinement. A weekly online questionnaire was collected, recording the PA level (min/week) and the results of the PIL test (purpose in life). The PA level decreased significantly at the beginning of the confinement and increased significantly in the easing phases. The intervention program was able to contribute to maintaining the PA level in the participants. The California State University launched its Graduation Initiative 2025 in January 2015 with a clear goal to increase graduation rates for our 475,000 students across all 23 campuses. The Graduation Initiative 2025 will add 100,000 more baccalaureate degree-educated citizens to California over the next ten years and begin to meet workforce demands. Increasing graduation rates, particularly for first-generation students, requires a strategic, data-driven approach. California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) faces particular challenges as 81% of our undergraduate population are first-generation college students, 63% receive Pell Grant, and 56% of incoming first-year students require some form of developmental coursework in English, math, or both. Data-driven decision-making must be used to focus graduation efforts. CSUSB organizes data regarding college readiness, and enrollment characteristics as preparedness have a direct influence on time to degree. Data on persistence and progress towards the degree are also important to track when examining graduation rates as it helps identify areas to improve. Finally, data on completion and post-graduation are indicators to track the progress of the initiative and meeting workforce demands.

Although many high school students appear to possess basic abilities in retrieving information, particularly when searching the Internet, they often lack the critical evaluation skills needed to succeed at the college level (Jackson & Hansen, 2006). Developing the necessary information literacy skills among high school students to support a successful transition to college is a unique undertaking for any institution. The authors provide a case study of an outreach effort between an academic library and an urban high school during challenging budgetary times. Lessons learned from the development of their information literacy instructional program and the instructional tools created will be discussed. Student outcomes within the collaboration which include the development of research and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed after high school will be addressed as well. This collaboration may serve as a model for other institutions developing similar programming.

Ineligibility for state financial aid has traditionally limited undocumented students’ access to higher education. Since 2013, the California Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (CA-DREAM) has made state-supported aid available to undocumented college students with demonstrated financial need. We use a difference-in-difference strategy and administrative data to examine the impact of the policy on undocumented community college students’ enrollment behaviors and postsecondary outcomes. The availability of CA-DREAM aid for these students, in the form of enrollment fee waivers, drew in undocumented Hispanic male students, students with lower average incoming high school GPAs, and those who increased their 11th to 12th grade achievement. Receiving DREAM aid significantly increased the average number of units attempted and completed and, in some cases, improved persistence and attainment outcomes. Undocumented students receiving aid achieved at similar levels as U.S. citizen peers receiving aid and better than their undocumented peers not receiving aid.

In this article, we report on an 11-year study that explores approaches to improve student success in college by a five-week summer program in Mathematics and Language Arts for entering freshmen. To recruit students into the program, we invited students accepted at the university and listed as underrepresented and economically disadvantaged (Pell-eligible) by the Office of Institutional Research at California State University, Northridge. The program consisted of all-day Math and English enhancement in mixed ability groups. Results of this program examining Math and English performance at California State University, Northridge showed that students completing the summer programs during the 11-year study period had improved pass rates in Math and English at California State University, Northridge compared with students in a control group who did not participate in the summer program. The results show that intensive pre-college enhancement for entering freshmen can improve student success in college. Student graduation data from the early cohorts (2010, 2011, 2012) were obtained from Institutional Research. The summary results showed that students from the accepted/ attending group had substantially increased GPAs and graduation rates, essentially closing the achievement gap. Increased interest in biomedical research careers was also developed by the program, as demonstrated by a five-fold number of summer enrichment participants entering the PhD, MARC (Minority Access to Research Careers) and RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) programs than students who did not attend summer enrichment. He started slowly and told the students that their college was only six years old, much had been accomplished in that time, and many were tired and now hoping to “lie down on the new lawn under one of those new trees out there and bask in the glory that is Sacramento State College.” The president, however, was more amused than tired, as he continued. “But no! The dust blew and the rains came and then the fog! And out of the quietness and the thickness of the fog—a shout—a clamor: We want football!” The college already had an athletic program, and he tried to understand why the students would clamor for more. But, the fact remained that they had asked for football, and he now had to tell them what would become of their petition.

This study investigated the effect of alkaline activation on the properties of Phosphoric Acid (PA) stabilized laterite. Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of the laterite were determined to ascertain its suitability as a construction material. Laterite samples were stabilized with 1M and 2M PA at 5, 10 and 15%, respectively, by weight of dry soil. Some PA stabilized laterite were further mixed with an alkaline activator. All the stabilized laterites were moist cured for up to 14 days. The results show that the laterite was unsuitable as a road construction material in its natural state. The CBR of PA stabilized laterite improved with about 25%, while that with alkaline activation showed more improvement of up to 145%. The UCS of PA stabilized soil and that with alkaline activation increased with about 250% improvement. In conclusion, alkaline activation of phosphoric acid stabilized laterite soil for road construction has a great promise.

Diversity in higher education with respect to faculty composition and executive leadership remains an elusive goal for many institutions of higher education. Over thirty years of research on faculty of color in academe has found that the pipeline for faculty of color still remains a significant challenge across higher education institutions and sectors (Turner, Gonzalez, & Wood, & 2008). For Hispanic-Serving Institutions, that possess a diverse base of students, faculty diversity, and the presence of Latino faculty, plays a critical role in academic excellence, mentorship and overall climate (Milem, 2003; Santos & Acevedo-Gil, 2013). This study examined two systems of higher education in California to explore the trends in Latino faculty diversity, given the critical mass of Latino undergraduates at both the community college and California State University systems of higher education. Findings suggest a disconnect between student diversity and tenure line faculty diversity exists. For HSI systems, like those present in California, faculty diversity may play an even greater role in raising Latino college completion, ultimately transforming the next generation of Latinos in California.

This article focuses on Latinx transfer inequity and the role of state policy in addressing barriers faced trying to move from community college to four-year institutions. A recently passed initiative in California, known as the Student Equity Policy, offers community colleges the opportunity to address transfer barriers for racial/ethnic students through institutional planning. One of the largest challenges facing California Community Colleges are the persistent inequitable rates of transfer for Latinx students, the largest ethnic group in the system. Using critical policy analysis, I examined a subset of 33 Hispanic-serving community colleges to understand how they leveraged the policy to address the transfer barriers facing Latinx students. By examining equity plans, this study finds that although Latinx students are identified as facing disproportionate levels of inequity; the policy, planning process, and funding resources were left as unexploited opportunities to address Latinx students’ specific equity gaps.

This was an exploratory qualitative study utilizing tenets of phenomenology to examine the lived experiences of front-line student services professionals in Admissions and Financial Aid and their dilemmas in interpreting and implementing California Assembly Bill 540 (2001) in their interactions with undocumented students. Front-line student services professionals are often the make-it or break-it persons for undocumented students to realize their dreams of attaining a postsecondary education because they determine whether students can pay in-state tuition and receive financial aid. California law AB 540 (2001) was created with the intention of providing a fair tuition policy for all California high school graduates entering college in California. AB 540’s (2001) purpose is to allow all California high school graduates, including undocumented immigrant students who meet the requirements, to be exempt from paying nonresident tuition at California public postsecondary institutions. An undocumented student is classified as someone who entered the U.S. without proper immigration documents or someone who entered the country legally as a nonimmigrant but later never exited the country (Internal Revenue Service, 2014). Twelve student service professionals, both part-time and full-time, at public two-year and four-year higher education institutions shared their experiences regarding management of difficult and sensitive conversations with undocumented students, as they attempted to translate state legislation through institutional polices. Many times, these front-line professionals in Admissions and Financial Aid were the first and only people to interact with incoming undocumented students before they set foot in the classroom. These professionals utilized their knowledge, resources, and networks to help students navigate the college-going process. However, unclear and/or non-existent campus policies, departmental silos, along with a lack of professional development, adequate resources, and appropriate guidance, often limited their capacity to help.

Some states have enacted inclusive policies that reduce constraints and uncertainty for undocumented students, potentially changing their academic decisions and postsecondary goals. We explore shifts in continuing undocumented community college students’ course-taking before and after the California DREAM Act, which provided access to state financial aid. We use difference-in-differences comparisons with permanent residents, refugees, and U.S. citizens who were unaffected by these policies to examine policy impacts. After its implementation, continuing students increased their enrollment intensity, primarily in degree-applicable and transferable courses, and decreased coursework in career/technical education. This suggests state financial aid may have broadened postsecondary possibilities and made transfer to a 4-year institution a more viable option for undocumented students. At the same time, access to aid did not increase undocumented students’ credit loads to the level of their peers, underscoring the reality that other constraints continue to shape undocumented students’ participation in higher education.

A partnership between California State University, Hayward and Ohlone College, Fremont, California resulted in a program to introduce undergraduate students to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) sample preparation procedures. Ten students enrolled in a biology major's course at the Ohlone Community College are selected each semester to participate in the program. In addition to these students, ten others from a Basic Skills Enhancement program for underrepresented students participate through a short course offered during the summer. The program, in effect for two years, resulted in the compilation of a laboratory manual describing basic sample preparation techniques that are appropriate for an outreach program. We select samples that are simple to prepare yet yield results that are germane to a biology student's curriculum. A selection of plants, pollen grains, bacteria, fungi, yeast, Drosophilia melanogaster, and various other invertebrates are typical samples that lend themselves to an outreach program that emphasizes biological concepts. Initially our program required the Ohlone College students to come to the Hayward campus to prepare their samples. External funding has allowed us to purchase sample preparation equipment for the community college.

Treatments were assigned to heavily infested trees at random and consisted of 4 single-tree replicates. Pretreatment counts indicated 182 mites/single-tree sample. Treatments were applied with a KWH backpack mistblower operating at half throttle on setting 3 for 40 s, delivering 910 ml of finished spray/tree. The first application was made to all trees 21 May under cloudy skies, 18°C, and 8-16 km/h breeze. A second spray was applied to some of the trees 2 Jun under partly sunny skies, 27°C, and 0-16 km/h breeze. Treatments were evaluated 1, 2, 4, and 8 wk after the second application by removing four 10-15-cm-long lateral branch tips from each of the 4 replicates/treatment. Samples were transported in coolers or insulated boxes and shipped by overnite carrier. All samples were immediately processed by passing them through a mite brush 6 times to dislodge mites to a rotating glass plate coated with Tween 20. The number of live mites was counted with the aid of a dissecting microscope.

Abstract COVID-19 restrictions may prevent adults from achieving sufficient physical activity (PA) and may affect PA context. This study examined the early effects of COVID-19 on daily PA bouts and contexts during April–June 2020 using a daily diary approach. Adults (N = 390) completed daily diary surveys for 28 days assessing number of PA bouts and social (e.g., alone), locational (i.e., home, neighborhood, recreational space), and technology (e.g., using streaming videos) contexts of PA. Mixed-effects models examined the effects of days since the pandemic started (on 3/13/2020), state residence, and demographics on number of daily PA bouts. Models examined demographic and temporal effects on PA context. Participants were 18–77 years, 15% Hispanic/Latino, and 80% female. PA bouts per day decreased significantly over time among Californians versus Coloradans (bsimple = −0.01, p < .001) and Hispanics/Latinos (vs. non-Hispanic Latinos) did fewer PA bouts per day (b = −0.17, p = .04). Most PA bouts occurred while alone (56.7%), at home (43.4%), or in any neighborhood (40.5%). Older (60+ years) versus younger (<40 years) adults were less likely to do PA with others (odds ratio [OR] = 0.40, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.18–0.90). PA bouts in recreational spaces were more common on weekends versus weekdays (OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.32–1.92) and were less common among California versus Colorado residents (OR = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.12–0.42). PA bouts decreased from April to June 2020, and these changes disparately affected subgroups. Resources are needed to counteract the negative effects of COVID-19 restrictions intended to slow disease spread on PA.

Food and housing security among college students is emerging as a state and national issue. In 2016, 656 students at a California community college completed an online survey. While 42% were food secure, 26% ranked low, and 32% as very low. A regression analysis was performed to assess formal and informal social supports associated with food security. The struggle for nutrition before college was the strongest predictor (B=1.816***), of food insecurity. Mental health problems (B=.978***) also contribute while sharing meals (B=-1.122**), was a protective factor. Results illustrates the need for a greater understanding of the challenges students face. College students are an overlooked population in need of intervention by social workers. Suggestions for intervention are discussed.

Abstract Epidemiological data links higher parity and lack of breastfeeding with increased risk of breast cancer, specifically aggressive triple negative breast cancer, and associated higher mortality rate. Long-term breastfeeding and gradual weaning of an infant leads to gradual involution (GI) of the breast, while lack of or abrupt discontinuation of breastfeeding after birth leads to abrupt involution (AI), when rapid and massive cell death takes place. Our studies show several precancerous changes, such as increased collagen deposition, inflammation, and hyperplasia in the mammary gland (MG) of mice after AI1. Recent studies indicate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-apha (PGC1α) as a regulator of involution and energy metabolism. As metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of cancer, metabolic changes in the MG related to involution warrant investigation. Objective: Our objective was to evaluate the metabolic effects of AI in MG. We hypothesized that AI leads to marked alteration in mammary lipid metabolism, mitochondrial biogenesis, and oxidative stress through elevations of PGC1α, which cause long-term metabolic reprogramming and genomic instability. Methods: FVB/n mice were paired for breeding. At partum, dams were randomized to AI or GI cohort and standardized to 6 pups per dam. AI mice had pups removed on day 7 postpartum (PPM). For GI mice 3 pups each were removed on day 28 and 31ppm. Tissues were harvested on day 28, 56, and 120 PPM. MG were subjected to Affymetrix, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), Seahorse Analysis, and lipidomics. Results were validated by qPCR and Western Blot. Superoxide species were detected by flow cytometry. DNA damage was analyzed via 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxygnuanosine (8-OHdG) ELISA. Results: Day 28 AI glands had significantly higher PGC1α expression than GI glands (p=0.006). Affymetrix and GSEA data showed day 28 AI glands to have enriched pathways related to fatty acid metabolism (p=0.004) and oxidative phosphorylation (p<0.001). Lipidomics showed elevated levels of oxidized sphingolipids and production of prostaglandin J2 (PGJ2) in day 28 AI glands (all p<0.02). Day 56 AI glands had higher levels of mitochondria superoxide species (p<0.0001) and higher PGJ2 synthesis (p=0.01). Day 120 AI MG had upregulation of an oxidized lipid (p=0.0476). Day 120 AI glands had significantly higher 8-OHdG levels (p=0.02), higher reliance of fatty acid substrates for energy (p=0.0185), and elevated extracellular acidification rates (p=0.0194). Conclusion: Although histologically both GI and AI MG return to near pre-pregnancy state within a month, our data shows long-term metabolic reprogramming in the AI MG similar to what is shown in breast cancer cells. These metabolic changes link to early elevations in PGC1α. Addressing the metabolic changes by targeting PGC1α provide a potential option to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer if a woman is unable to breastfeed. Abstract Introduction Sleep disturbance is a transdiagnostic risk factor that is so prevalent among emerging adults it is considered to be a public health epidemic. For emerging adults, who are already at greater risk for psychopathology, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted daily routines, potentially changing sleep patterns and heightening risk factors for the emergence of affective dysregulation, and consequently mood-related disturbances. This study aimed to determine whether variability in sleep patterns across a 3-month period was associated with next-day positive and negative affect, and affective dynamics, proximal affective predictors of depressive symptoms among young adults during the pandemic. Methods College student participants (N=20, 65% female, Mage=19.80, SDage=1.0) wore non-invasive wearable devices (the Oura ring https://ouraring.com/) continuously for a period of 3-months, measuring sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency, total sleep, and time spent in different stages of sleep (light, deep and rapid eye movement). Participants reported daily PA and NA using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule on a 0-100 scale to report on their affective state. Results Multilevel models specifying a within-subject process of the relation between sleep and affect revealed that participants with higher sleep onset latency (b= -2.98, p<.01) and sleep duration on the prior day (b= -.35, p=.01) had lower PA the next day. Participants with longer light sleep duration had lower PA (b= -.28, p=.02), whereas participants with longer deep sleep duration had higher PA (b= .36, p=.02) the next day. On days with higher total sleep, participants experienced lower NA compared to their own average (b= -.01, p=.04). Follow-up exploratory bivariate correlations revealed significant associations between light sleep duration instability and higher instability in both PA and NA, whereas higher deep sleep duration was linked with lower instability in both PA and NA (all ps< .05). In the full-length paper these analyses will be probed using linear regressions controlling for relevant covariates (main effects of sleep, sex/age/ethnicity). Conclusion Sleep, an important transdiagnostic health outcome, may contribute to next-day PA and NA. Sleep patterns predict affect dynamics, which may be proximal predictors of mood disturbances. 24% of 917 students at California State University Long Beach who completed an alcohol use survey in 2002 (73% response) identified themselves as Latino. Because measures of acculturation reported in most adult studies positively correlated with alcohol use and sex, it was hypothesized that these associations might also apply to Latino college students. With increasing levels of acculturation, women but not men in this Latino college sample reported significantly greater occurrence of heavy drinking, positive attitudes about drinking, and perception that most of their friends use alcoholic beverages.

Using a large dataset from a state education system, this study examined the experience of international college students in the United States as well as the connection to their cognitive, affective, and civic outcomes. The study utilized data from the 2010 University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES) and a sample of 35,146 junior and senior undergraduate students across 10 campuses. The results of this study showed that international students may uniquely experience college and may not benefit from those experiences as much as their domestic peers. Furthermore, this study identified a broad range of college experiences that contribute to the key outcomes for international students. Abstract Age-Friendly Care, PA is co-led by Primary Health Network, the largest Federally Qualified Health Center in Pennsylvania, and Penn State College of Nursing that aims to bring reliable, high-quality, age-friendly care to all older adults living in rural PA. Sponsored by HRSA through its Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program, Age-Friendly Care, PA utilizes the ECHO, all-teach-all-learn, platform to engage isolated rural providers in incorporating the 4Ms (IHI) into their practice. Age-Friendly Care, PA reaches out directly to rural older adults and their care partners to co-design education and support. We have hosted 28+ events and reached 450+ individuals. Results include tracking and improvement in quality indicators assessed including support for individuals living with dementia and their care partners (NA-66.7%), risk for opioid misuse (NA-78%), high-risk medication management (NA-47.8%), fall-risk management (NA-9.4%), and advanced care planning (NA-8.9%). We will discuss the creation, co-development, implementation, lessons learned, and future of Age-Friendly Care, PA.

Abstract The Penn State College of Nursing (including the Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence [CGNE] and Center for Nursing Research [CNR]) has partnered with the Primary Health Network (PHN) to work collaboratively toward implementing the 4Ms framework of an Age-Friendly Health System at PHN’s primary care sites in Pennsylvania. PHN is the largest FQHC in the state and spans 16 counties in PA and 2 in Ohio. Twenty of PHN’s PA primary care sites are in rural counties, and both rural and urban sites serve older adult populations with major health disparities. Connecting primary care practices with local community resources and programs is an important step in serving rural populations, and we have used the ECHO model to help facilitate connections. This session will focus on how we are using the ECHO model to engage our partners in a collaborative learning environment.

In this commentary, we engage and summarize existing practices for recruiting and retaining American Indian and Alaska Native students in postsecondary institutions in California. This commentary is the output of a two-day symposium, “Lighting a Path Forward: UC Land Grants, Public Memory, and Tovaangar,” held at the University of California, Los Angeles in October of 2019. The symposium brought together campus and community leaders from across California to discuss the past, present and future of American Indian and Alaska Native student and community concerns, and provide intervening policy and practice recommendations. Participants included both American Indian and Alaska Native and non-Native individuals with a wealth of professional experience and employment in American Indian and Alaska Native education, from the California Community College, California State University and University of California systems. We jointly created a table of critical interventions in education, the justification for this, and potential strategies for implementation. Here, we summarize the discussion of participants from the American Indian and Alaska Native student retention and recruitment workshop to document recommends interventions for campus practitioners and leaders to serve as a guiding document for system and campus advocacy.

According to the 2020 Hope Survey, 38% of two-year college students and 29% of four-year college students experienced food insecurity. The distinct lifestyle of student-athletes may place them at an even greater risk for experiencing food insecurity and its consequences as compared to non-student-athletes. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence of food insecurity among 98 student-athletes at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and explored its impact on their athletic and academic performance, and emotional well-being. The current study utilized a mixed-methods, cross sectional design. An online survey was used to assess food security status, fruit and vegetable intake, reliance on athletic department fueling stations, and other sociodemographic variables. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the impact of food insecurity on athletic performance, academic performance, and emotional well-being. Of the 98 student-athletes, 34.7% were food insecure. Reliance on the fueling station as a primary source of food for the day and reduced fruit and vegetable intake were identified as significant predictors of food insecurity. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted and revealed that food intake impacts energy levels during athletic events and overall quality of athletic performance, as well as energy levels in class and ability to focus during class. Additionally, unequal access to resources within the fueling station were seen as a barrier to their success. Future research should investigate the prevalence of food insecurity among student-athletes and assess the use of the athletic department fueling station as an intervention to mitigate food insecurity among this population.

Immigration federalism scholarship has established that state and local government policies can make federally defined immigration status more or less consequential. Drawing primarily on focus groups and interviews with 184 undocumented students attending the University of California, we suggest that institutional policies work alongside state and local efforts to mediate the consequences of illegality for undocumented students. We find that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, state-funded financial aid policies, and university support programs all facilitate the integration of undocumented students by increasing access to higher education and enabling fuller participation. Although federal policies contribute to persistent barriers to academic engagement and professional development, we show that universities can intervene to improve educational experiences and opportunities. Ultimately, we argue that university policies are a key site for intervening in immigration policy and constructing immigrant illegality.

This research explores the history and evolution of the Establishment Clause from the Everson v. Board of Education (1947) separation of church and state framework, to the newly anointed accommodationist approach preferred in the Kennedy v. Bremerton School District (2022), within the context of college football at public universities. Player-led prayers, coach-led prayers, PA system-led prayer, the use of team chaplains, and other acts of religious expression are thoroughly discussed. College football coaches have a unique relationship with the student-athletes on their team, which includes examination of the Establishment Clause and the role of coercion (Chaudhuri v. Tennessee (1997); Lee v. Weisman, (1992); Mellen v. Bunting (2003). Similarly, the Supreme Court’s decision in Kennedy v. Bremerton (2022) to cast aside the Lemon Test analysis in favor of an approach that accommodates the traditional aspects of prayer applies the precedent from Marsh v. Chambers (1983) and Town of Greece v. Galloway (2014). While it is clear the use of team chaplains, coaches who actively proselytize at public institutions, and the use of the PA system for prayer at public institutions violates the Establishment Clause, coaches who engage in quiet, private prayer do not under the precedent established in Kennedy v. Bremerton (2022). However, this recent Supreme Court ruling leaves a large gray area of unanswered application relative to player-led team prayers, having a team prayer, coach-led prayer that is not quiet and private, and the role of coercion in the legal analysis.

We demonstrate that improving graduation rates does not cause more students to graduate or increase student success. The underlying presumptions are spurious and misleading, as no causal connection exists between graduation rates and the ultimate number of students who graduate from college. Indeed, increasing graduation rates generate unintended consequences that may increase the equity gap. We use California State University’s (CSU) practices as a case study of the national obsession with graduation rates and include a crucial focus on the differential and adverse impact of those practices. We recommend other goals as better measures of student success, such as increased completion rates and lower attrition rates during the first year of college, especially for first-generation and underrepresented students. Our aim is to encourage those in higher education to refocus their attention on the true aims of a college degree.

Between 1996 and 1998 California and Texas eliminated the use of affirmative action in college and university admissions. At the states' elite public universities admission rates of black and Hispanic students subsequently fell by 30–50% and minority representation in the entering freshman classes declined. This study investigates whether the elimination of affirmative action changed minority students' college application behavior. A particular concern is that highly qualified minorities—who were not directly affected by the policy change—would be dissuaded from applying to elite public schools, either because of reduced campus diversity or because of uncertainty about their admission prospects. The authors use information from SAT takers in the two states to compare the fractions of minority students who sent their test scores to selective state institutions before and after the elimination of affirmative action. They find no change in the SAT-sending behavior of highly qualified black or Hispanic students.
