A study on the “Phenetic analysis of Capsicum annuum L. and Capsicum frutescens L. “ has been conducted from June to August 2012. The aim of the research is to know the relationship amoung big chillis and small chillis based on morphology. The samples were taken from 5 villages in Sukamantri Sub-district, Ciamis. The method used in this research was explorative survey with purposive random sampling. The character data of big chili and small chili morphologies were analyzed descriptively to determine the relationship using UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Mean Arithmetic) methods. The result of this study showed that there were seven cultivars of big chilli, namely C. annuum „Hot Chili‟, Gada, Fantastik, Keriting TM 888, Tanjung 2, Keriting TM 999, Hot Beauty, and four cultivars of small chilli namely C. frutescens „Cakra Ungu‟, Cakra Hijau, Bendot, and Cakra Putih. The fenogram showed that there were five groups, two groups of C. annuum and three groups of C. frutescens. The first group consisted of C. annuum „Hot Chili‟, Keriting TM 888, Fantastik, and Tanjung 2. The second group consisted of C. annuum „Gada‟, Hot Beauty, and Keriting TM 999. The third group was C. frutescens „Bendot‟. The fourth group consisted of C. frutescens „Cakra Putih‟, and C. frutescens „Cakra Hijau‟. The fifth group was C. frutescens „Ungu‟. The closest relationship was between C. annuum „Keriting TM 999‟ and C. annuum „Hot Beauty‟ and the farthest relationship was between C. frutescens „Bendot‟ and C. frutescens „Ungu‟.

The influence of four arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Glomus arenarium, G. caledonium, G. irregulare, and G. mosseae) and a root endophyte species (Piriformospora indica – Sebacinales) was investigated on four “day-neutral” strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) cultivars (Albion, Charlotte, Mara des Bois, and Seascape) for their tolerance to salt stress. Fungal symbiosis tended to benefit strawberry plants in their tolerance to salinity, confirming the potential use of mycorrhizal biotechnology in horticulture in arid areas.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh lama blansir dan suhu pengeringan terhadap kualitas bubuk cabai merah varietas TM-999. Cabai merah merupakan komoditas hortikulturabernilai ekonomi tinggi yang digunakan luas dalam industri makanan dan farmasi. Cabai ini kayaakan nutrisi penting seperti karbohidrat, lemak, protein, kalsium, vitamin A, B1, dan C, serta memiliki potensi sebagai agen anti kanker berkat kandungan lasparaginase. Penelitian dilakukandi Laboratorium Teknologi Benih Jurusan Agroteknologi Fakultas Pertanian Universitas SyiahKuala, Banda Aceh, selama Februari hingga Mei 2023. Penggunaan berbagai peralatan laboratorium seperti oven, kipas angin, ayakan 60 mesh, dan lainnya, mendukung penelitian ini. Sementara itu, bahan yang digunakan meliputi 9 kilogram cabai merah varietas TM-999 yang dipanen setelah mencapai usia 90 hari, serta bahan kimia tertentu. Penelitian mengikuti desain Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan variasi lama blansir (0, 2, dan 3 menit) dan suhu pengeringan (50°C, 55°C, dan 60°C). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lama blansir berpengaruh signifikan terhadap warna a dan aroma, dengan lama blansir 3 menit memberikan kualitas bubuk cabai merah optimal. Suhu pengeringan berpengaruh pada kadar vitamin C, dengan suhu 50°C menjadi yang terbaik. Selain itu, penelitian ini tidak menemukan interaksi yang signifikan antara lama blansir dan suhu pengeringan terhadap kualitas cabai merah. Hasil ini memberikan panduan berharga untuk meningkatkan proses pengeringan dan kualitas bubuk cabai merah dalam aplikasi industri pangan dan farmasi.

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, flash memory cells with high-k dielectric HfO2 as tunnel oxide and group IV (Si, Ge) nanocrystals were fabricated and tested. The device structure was grown by magnetron sputtering deposition method and analyzed by various diagnostic techniques such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The use of HfO2 tunnel oxide dielectric with high permittivity constant was one of the main purposes of this study. The ultimate aim was to investigate the use of Si and Ge nanocrystals together with HfO2 tunnel oxide in the memory elements. Interface structure of the fabricated devices was studied by XPS spectroscopy. A depth profile analysis was performed with XPS. Nanocrystal formations were verified using Raman spectroscopy technique. The final part of the study includes electrical characterization of memory devices fabricated using Si and Ge floating gate. C-V (Capacitance Voltage) and G-V (Conductance-Voltage) measurements and charge storage behaviour based on C-V measurements were performed. For comparison, structure of Si and Ge layers either in thin film or in the nanocrystal form were studied. A comparison of the C-V characteristics of these two structures revealed that the memory device with thin films do not confine charge carriers under the gate electrode as should be expected for a continuous film. On the other hand, the device with nanocrystals exhibited better memory behavior as a result of better confinement in the isolated nanocrystals. Trace amount of oxygen was found to be enough to oxidize Ge nanocrystals as confirmed by the Raman measurements. The charge storage capability is weakened in these samples as a result of Ge oxidation. In general, this work has demonstrated that high-k dielectric HfO2 and group IV nanocrystals can be used in the new generation MOS based memory elements. The operation of the memory elements are highly dependent on the material and device structures, which are determined by the process conditions.

The charge and spin density correlations in a one dimensional electron gas (1DEG) confined in a semiconductor quantum wire structure at zero temperature are studied. The dielectric formulation of the many--body problem is employed and the longitudinal dielectric function, local-field correction, static structure factor, pair correlation function, ground state energy, compressibility, spin-dependent effective interaction potentials, paramagnon dispersion and static spin response function of the 1DEG are computed within the self-consistent field approximations of Singwi et al., known as the STLS and SSTL. The results are compared with those of other groups, and those obtained for two-dimensional electron gas systems whenever it is possible. It is observed that the SSTL satisfies the compressibility sum rule better than the STLS. Calculating the ground state energy of the 1DEG in unpolarized and fully polarized states, it is shown that both STLS and SSTL predict a Bloch transition for 1DEG systems at low electron densities. Finally, the coupled plasmon-phonon modes in semiconductor quantum wires are calculated within the Fermi and Luttinger liquid theories. The coupling of electrons to bulk longitudinal optical phonons without dispersion and to acoustic phonons via deformation potential with a linear dispersion are considered. Using the dielectric formalism, a unified picture of the collective coupled plasmon-phonon modes is presented. Considerable differences between the predictions of the Fermi and Luttinger liquid approaches at large wave vector values, which may be observed experimentally, are found.

Passivation of the crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer surface and decreasing the number of interface defects are basic requirements for development of high efficiency a-Si:H/c-Si heterojunction solar cells. Surface passivation is generally achieved by development of detailed silicon wafer cleaning processes and the optimization of PECVD parameters for the deposition of intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer. a-Si:H layers are grown in UHV-PECVD system. Solar cells were deposited on the p type Cz-silicon substrates in the structure of Al front contact/a-Si:H(n)/a-Si:H(i)/c-Si(p)/Al back contact. Solar cell parameters were determined under standard test conditions namely, using 1000 W/m2, AM 1.5G illumination at 25 oC. Growth of (i) a-Si:H, films on the clean wafer surface was investigated as a function of substrate temperature, RF power density, gas flow rate, hydrogen dilution ratio and deposition time and was characterized using SEM, HRTEM, AFM, SE, ATR-FTIR and I/V measurements. Structural properties of the films deposited on silicon wafer surface are directly effective on the solar cell efficiency. Morphological characterization of the grown films on the crystalline surface was found to be very complex depending on the deposition parameters and may even change during the deposition time. At 225 oC substrate temperature, at the beginning of the deposition, (i) a-Si:H films was found grown in epitaxial structure, followed by a simultaneous growth of crystalline and amorphous structure, and finally transforming to complete amorphous structure. Despite this complex structure, an efficiency of 9.2% for solar cells with total area of 72 cm2 was achieved. In this cell structure, TCO and back surface passivation do not exist. In the

This thesis asks how cities changed the world, by conducting a close study of urban change in Milan during the long eleventh-century. The growth of the city both transformed and responded to religion and the rural landscape around it. The radicalism of social change in this period is above all reflected by the emergence of the popular movement for religious reform known as the Pataria. Between 1057 and 1075 this social campaign against simony and clerical marriage revolted against episcopal authority, and the kinship groups which stood behind it. In size and radicalism, the social movement had no parallel in contemporary Europe. In order to account for the extent of social and religious change in eleventh century Milan, this thesis engage with both the historiography of socio-economic change, and contemporary religious reform. Chapter 1 characterises the political and religious institutions which shaped Milan in this period. Chapter 2 studies how property relations and land management changed under the pressure of urban growth, underlining the precocious extension of city market relations from the 1050s in the north-east of the diocese. These rural changes enabled rapidly expanding growth and complexity in the city, mapped using a range of evidence in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 offers a new social account of the origins of the Pataria, which foregrounds the transformation of social relations in the north-east of the diocese especially. Chapters 5 and 6 explore how saints' cults and urban ritual and liturgy were crucial to the reproduction of authority in an evermore complex urban environment, and how for this reason these structures were contested by the Pataria.

A pesquisa de mestrado intitulada Rex perpetuus norvegiæ: a sacralidade dos reis noruegueses e a santificação de Óláfr Haraldsson (c. 995-1030) à luz da literatura nórdica latina e vernacular (sécs. XI-XII) é um inquérito sobre as diferentes tradições de sacralidade régia na Noruega durante a Era Viking e a Escandinávia Medieval, sobre a santificação do viking, rei, mártir e santo norueguês Óláfr Haraldsson, além da utilização de sua imagem como padroeiro do reino para consolidar a monarquia, a Igreja da Noruega e a recepção da biografia sagrada do santo norueguês por parte dos fieis. Óláfr Haraldsson (c.995-1030) viveu como viking durante alguns anos. Em 1015 ele retornou à Noruega para reclamar o trono após ser batizado em Rouen. A grande tarefa deste rei foi consolidar a conversão de seu povo ao cristianismo, tarefa que cumpriu à maneira de Carlos Magno: conversões forçadas e destruição de objetos e espaços de veneração pagãos. Ele foi banido do reino após a derrota na Batalha de Helgeå (1026). Após como proscrito, ele retornou em 1030, mas foi morto na Batalha de Stiklestaðir (1030). O rei morto transformou-se num objeto de veneração pouco após a sua morte, e um ano após a derradeira batalha, seu corpo foi transladado das cercanias de Nidaróss para o seio dessa cidade, que ficava na região onde este rei encontrava o maior número de seus detratores. Há indícios de peregrinações em massa para o seu santuário, e os inimigos do controle dinamarquês sobre a Noruega viram em Óláfr a possibilidade de se fortalecer, assim como a Igreja local, que tentava se unir a monarquia para ganhar forças e sobreviver num território recém-convertido à fé cristã. Seus sucessores empenharam- se em utilizar o rei-mártir para fortalecer seu poder político no reino. Entrementes, elementos da antiga sacralidade régia pagã foram reaproveitados, como o hamingja (“sorte”), além da incorporação da sacralidade régia cristã e do monarca defunto como padroeiro do reino e rei perpétuo da Noruega. O modelo inicial da biografia sagrada do santo seguia o padrão anglo-saxão de reis mártires, embora tenha sofrido influências da cultura local e respondido aos anseios da comunidade.
The master’s research entitled Rex perpetuus Norvegiae: the sacred kingship in the Norwegian monarchy and the sanctification of Óláfr Haraldsson (c. 995 – 1030) in the light of latin and vernacular literature (11th and 12th centuries) is an inquiry on the different traditions of sacred kingship in Norway during Viking Age and Medieval Scandinavia, on the sanctification of the Viking, king, martyr and Norwegian saint Óláfr Haraldsson, and the use of his image as patron saint of the kingdom to consolidate the monarchy, the Norwegian church and the reception of the sacred biography by the faithful. Óláfr Haraldsson (c. 995-1030) lived as a Viking during some years. At 1015 he come back to Norway to claim the throne after his baptism in Rouen. The main task of this king was the conversion of his people to the christianism. He did it with forced conversions and destruction of temples and sacred pagan objects. He was banned of the kingdom after his defeat at the Battle of Helgeã (1026). The dead king became quickly in an object of veneration after their death, and one year late, his body was translated from the vicinity of Nidaróss for this town, place where his main opponents lived. There are indications of massive pilgrimage to his shrine, and some powerful Norwegian nobles utilized Óláfr as a tool to improve the Norwegian opposition and the local church. The church, by turn, united with the monarchy, wanted to strengthen the Christianism at the kingdom. The rulers after Óláfr utilized him to improve their political power in the kingdom. The rulers after Óláfr utilized him to improve their political power in the kingdom. Meanwhile, elements of the pagan sacred kingship were reused, as the hamingja (“luck”). At the same time, the Christian sacred kingship and the dead king were utilized in the same purposes, and the last became the patron saint and the everlasting king of Norway. The initial model of sacred biography of Óláfr followed the anglo-saxon pattern of martyr kings, but he suffered influences from local culture and from the needs of faithful community.

Uppsatsen innehåller en studie av hur etiska regler, vilka framför allt återfinns inom advokatyrket, påverkar konkurrensen och de konflikter som uppstår mellan de svenska och europeiska konkurrensreglerna och dessa etiska regler. Mer specfikt identifieras vilka konkurrenshämmande effekter dessa regler medför, och vilka alternativ som finns för att kombinera etiska regler och konkurrensregler på ett sådant sätt att minsta möjliga skada uppstår för konsumenterna av advokattjänster. Resultatet av uppsatsen är att vissa etiska regler bör elimineras eller modifieras, eftersom de påverkar marknaden på ett negativt sätt utan att medföra motsvarande vinster annorstädes. The essay contains a studie on how ethical rules, here represented by the rules for the law profession, influence the competition. Furthermore are the conflicts that appear between the ethical rules and the Swedish and European competition rules identified and analysed. Different solutions are discussed with the purpose of reducing consumer damage on the law service market to a minimum. The conclusion of the essay is that some of the ethical rules that presently exist on the law service market are partly or fully useless, and/or bring about unnecessary restrictions without positive effects on other parts of the economy.

This thesis explains his policy for the first time for a history of the political ideas of colonization. Grey introduced the policy of racial amalgamation to settler colonies after the 1837 Report of the Select Committee into Aboriginal Affairs, that had advised the policy of segregation as had been North American policy under Sir William Johnson. This thesis demonstrates that Grey was a Liberal Anglican who had adopted neo-Harringtonian thought, and who introduced Jeffersonian native policy into British native policy. He practised the strategic theory of Antoine-Henri Jomini, applying it to native policy. Grey captured the monarchical constitution of the empire for what had been a settler policy of dissent to the segregation of indigenes that dated back to Tudor Ireland and early Viginia. Grey's distinctive intellectual practices were ethnograpical research and speculation, for which he enjoyed an international reputation, and the constitutional design of settler colonies, an activity he came to totally identify with. The thesis concentrates on his first New Zealand governorship (1845-53) and upon the resumption of his second New Zealand governorship (1861-68) because it was in that colony he first fully practised his native policy and participated in constitutional design, and into which he brought about a crisis of indigenous amalgamation on the eve of the Waikato War in 1863, having introduced full responsible government.

Metalorganic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) is a versatile technique for the deposition of thin films of oxide materials as it offers advantages, such as deposition over large surface area, conformal coverage, selective area deposition, and a high degree of compositional control. The MOCVD process uses metalorganic (MO) complexes, such as β-diketonate and alkoxide-based complexes, as precursors. These complexes are stable and moderately volatile. Because of the direct bond between metal and oxygen, MO complexes are natural precursors for oxide coatings. As the process involves chemical reactions taking place on the substrate surface, growth of thin films by MOCVD depends on various parameters such as the chemical nature and concentration of precursors, reaction pressure, reaction temperature, and the nature of the substrate. Such a large parameter space of the CVD process, when combined with the dynamics (thermodynamics and fluid dynamics) and kinetics, makes it rather complex. This complexity allows one to make thin films of metastable phases, including amorphous materials. One of the important findings of the work is that MOCVD process is capable of making composite coatings of carbonaceous metal oxide. Manganese is multivalent and forms various stable oxides, such as MnO, Mn2O3, Mn3O4 and MnO2. There are various potential applications of manganese oxides. MnO2 is a very well studied material for its electrochemical applications in dry cells, lithium-ion batteries, and in supercapacitors. Hence, it becomes pertinent to explore the properties of thin films of manganese oxides prepared by MOCVD for various electrochemical and other applications. The thesis work is divided into two parts. Part 1 describes the synthesis of manganese complexes, their characterization, and their application to the CVD of coatings, especially those of carbonaceous MnO. Part 2 is devoted to a detailed study of electrochemical aspects of the carbonaceous MnO coatings, followed by a report on their unusual transport properties. Chapter 1 begins with a brief introduction to thin film deposition processes. In particular, the CVD process is described with reference to various parameters such as carrier gas flow, pressure, temperature and most importantly, the CVD precursor. The chapter ends with a description of the scope of the work undertaken for the present thesis. Chapter 2 deals with “Synthesis and Characterization of MO complexes”. It begins with a description of the classification of CVD precursors with the description of MO complexes such as β-diketonates, which are generally subliming crystalline solids. Manganese β-diketonate complexes are discussed in detail. Due to the multivalent nature of Mn, there are two possible complexes namely Mn(acac)2(H2O)2 and Mn(acac)3. These complexes have been synthesised and characterized (confirmed) by various techniques, such as elemental analysis (CHN), X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy. Thermal analysis of the complexes shows that they are suitable as MOCVD precursors. We have used Mn(acac)2(H2O)2 as a precursor in the present work. Metalorganic complexes, where metal ion is directly bonded with both nitrogen and oxygen, can be potential candidates for the precursor for oxynitrides coatings. We have therefore studied solid crystalline anthranilate complexes of various metal ions, such as Mn2+, Co2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ and confirmed their formation. Thermal analysis shows that anthranilate complexes are fairly volatile below 250oC and decompose below 500oC. These complexes were pyrolysed in open air and in sealed tube at different temperatures, and the resulting powder product examined by XRD, SEM, EDAX and FTIR. This preliminary study shows that anthranilate complexes yield different oxides of Mn, Co and Cu under different pyrolysis conditions, with very interesting morphological features. Pyrolysis of Zn(aa)2 in a sealed tube leads to the formation of a nanocomposite of carbon and zinc oxide (wuerzite), rich in carbon, with potential for applications in catalysis. On the other hand, the pyrolysis of Zn(aa)2 in air at the same temperature leads to leads to crystalline, nanostructured zinc oxide (wuerzite). However, no attempt has been made to use these anthranilates as CVD precursors. Chapter 3 deals with “MOCVD of Manganese Oxides and their Characterization”. It begins with a brief review of various manganese oxides and their properties. This is followed by description of the CVD reactor used for the present work, together with the conditions employed for the deposition of MnOx films. Depositions have been carried out on different substrates such as SS-316, ceramic alumina and Si (111), while varying various deposition parameters, viz., substrate, reactor pressure, carrier gas (argon) flow rate, and the duration of deposition. Significantly, depositions are divided into two categories: one, carried out in argon ambient, in the absence of a supply of oxygen (or any other oxidant) and the second one, under oxygen flow, using argon as carrier gas. The films deposited in the absence of oxygen flow are thick, black in colour, and electrically conducting, indicating the presence of carbon. The growth rate follows a typical thermal pattern, with activation energy of ~ 1.7 eV. Detailed characterization by XRD, TEM/ED, Raman, FTIR and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) shows that these films are composed of MnO in a carbon-rich amorphous matrix. High-resolution SEM (fig. 1) reveals a fractal pattern of cauliflower morphology, comprising very fine particles (4 – 10 nm), characteristic of very large specific surface area of the film, which is confirmed by volumetric BET measurement (~2000 m2/g). We conclude that growth in argon ambient leads to a homogenous nanocomposite film of hydrated MnO in carbon-rich matrix. Thus, our study reveals that MOCVD is a novel one-step chemical method to produce homogenous composite thin films, wherein all components of the nanocomposite film emerge from the same chemical precursor. Carbon incorporation is generally avoided by empirical process design, as it is viewed as an impurity. The potential advantages of carbon incorporation are thus not examined and the composite nature of carbonaceous films not recognized in the literature. Carbonaceous nanocomposite film can be significant as an electrode in supercapacitors, as discussed in part 2 of the thesis. Chapter 3 describes films deposited under oxygen flow, which are no longer black and are highly resistive, indicating the absence of carbon in the film, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the films obtained under oxygen flow are more crystalline than the ones obtained in the absence of oxygen flow, and that the films are generally nanocrystalline composites of two manganese oxides, such as MnO and Mn3O4. Given the context of the carbonaceous MnO films described above, chapter 4 begins with a review of electrochemical capacitors (also called supercapacitors or ultracapacitors), which are emerging as important energy storage devices. Until now, in the Mn-O system, hydrated MnO2 has been well-studied as an electrode material due to its low cost and environmental compatibility, but the low electrical conductivity of MnO2, together with irreversible redox reactions, reduces its performance. In electrochemical capacitor applications, metal-oxide/carbon composites are finding importance. Chapter 4 deals with “MnO/C Nanocomposite Coatings as Electrodes for Electrochemical Capacitor”. In this chapter, we have examined the novel EM, i.e., the hydrated MnO/C nanocomposite coating prepared by the MOCVD process on a conducting substrate (current collector) such as SS-316 as an electrode. Electrochemical measurements have been carried out for both the 3-electrode assembly (for basic aqueous electrolyte) and 2-electrode assembly (for gel polymer electrolyte) using cyclic voltammetry (CV), AC impedance and charge-discharge techniques. The studies lead to a maximum specific capacitance of 230 – 270 F/g at 1 mA/cm2 discharge current density for the MnO/C nanocomposite coating grown at 680oC. The Bode plot shows a maximum phase angle of around 74 – 82o, indicating capacitive behaviour. The MnO/C nanocomposite film shows a very small time constant (0.5 – 3 msec), which is good for high frequency applications. The pulse power figure of merit is found to be 650 – 2000 W/g. Capacitance determined for a large number of charge-discharge cycles (~20000), and at large current densities (50 mA/cm2) show promising results. The energy density (5 - 32 Wh/kg) and power density (2 – 4 kW/kg) estimated from charge-discharge data at 1 mA/cm2 shows the potential of the nanocomposite MnO/C as electrode for superior capacitor devices. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) offer the advantage of large electrochemical potential window due to its structural and chemical stability. Studies have been carried out to show that the MnO/C nanocomposite film is compatible with gel polymer electrolytes based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) with salts of magnesium triflate and magnesium perchlorate, respectively) and plasticizers (ethylene carbonate (EC) + propylene carbonate (PC)), in a 2-electrode assembly. Chapter 5 deals with “Magnetoconductance in MnO/C Nanocomposite Coatings on Alumina”. Amorphous systems, such as MnO/C composites wherein carbon is amorphous and MnO is nearly so, are highly symmetric condensed phases, which do not possess long range translational or orientational order. Disorder in the system creates Anderson localized states just above the valence band, which lead to reduced electrical conductivity. Amorphous systems show either a small negative magnetoresistance (~ 5%) or a small positive magnetoconductance (~ 7%) at very low temperatures (~ 10 K). As such, the transport properties of the MnO/C nanocomposite film have been investigated, and are reported in chapter 5. Transport and magnetotransport measurements have been made on the MnO/C nanocomposite film grown on alumina. It is found that the MnO/C nanocomposite coating exhibits a giant negative MR (22.3%) at a temperature as high as 100 K, which is unusual because pure MnO is anti-ferromagnetic and does not ordinarily show any magnetoresistance (MR), while amorphous carbon is known to show a small MR at very low temperatures (~7 K), due to weak-localization. The present results mean that a mechanism other than weak-localization plays a role in this nanocomposite material. Further study of this material is called for, which can perhaps lead to giant magnetoresistance (GMR) at room temperature in a metal-oxide/carbon nanocomposite. A summary of the work and an outlook for further research are given in the concluding chapter 6.

AbstractCollecting metadata from Transport Layer Security (TLS) servers on a large scale allows to draw conclusions about their capabilities and configuration. This provides not only insights into the Internet but it enables use cases like detecting malicious Command and Control (C &C) servers. However, active scanners can only observe and interpret the behavior of TLS servers, the underlying configuration and implementation causing the behavior remains hidden. Existing approaches struggle between resource intensive scans that can reconstruct this data and light-weight fingerprinting approaches that aim to differentiate servers without making any assumptions about their inner working. With this work we propose DissecTLS, an active TLS scanner that is both light-weight enough to be used for Internet measurements and able to reconstruct the configuration and capabilities of the TLS stack. This was achieved by modeling the parameters of the TLS stack and derive an active scan that dynamically creates scanning probes based on the model and the previous responses from the server. We provide a comparison of five active TLS scanning and fingerprinting approaches in a local testbed and on toplist targets. We conducted a measurement study over nine weeks to fingerprint C &C servers and analyzed popular and deprecated TLS parameter usage. Similar to related work, the fingerprinting achieved a maximum precision of 99 % for a conservative detection threshold of 100 %; and at the same time, we improved the recall by a factor of 2.8.

AbstractFe is a detrimental impurity element in secondary, i. e. recycled, Al–Si cast alloys (Zhang et al. in Miner. Process. Extr. Metall. Rev. 33:99, 2012;Raabe et al. in Prog. Mater. Sci. 128, 2022;). It leads to decrease of castability and promotes crack formation due to formation of primary, Fe-containing intermetallic particles, e.g. plate-shaped β-Al–Fe–Si, coarse αh-Al–Fe–Si or αc-Al–(Fe,Mn,Cr)–Si in presence of further transition metal elements e.g. Mn and Cr. Successfully, dealing with such secondary Al–Si cast alloys contributes to sustainability, circular economy and reduction of energy consumption (Raabe et al. in Prog. Mater. Sci. 128, 2022;Taylor in Mater. Sci. Forum 689:429, 2011;). In the present chapter, a systematic understanding is provided for dealing with Fe impurities in secondary Al–Si alloys by. removal of Fe on the basis of melt conditioning and metal melt filtration and modification of Fe-containing phases into harmless microstructural components. In this context new insight is obtained into. the crystal structures of some relevant intermetallic phases occurring in secondary Al–Si alloys, thermodynamics and kinetics of phase formation during solidification and the interaction of different filter materials with the transition metal containing Al–Si alloys. The crystal structures of the β-Al–Fe–Si and δ-Al–Fe–Si phases and of their ordered variants were investigated. This allowed reliable distinction of occurring intermetallic phases, the αh-Al–Fe–Si, the αc-Al–(Fe,Mn,Cr)–Si, the β-Al–Fe–Si and the δ-Al–Fe–Si phase, especially by electron backscatter diffraction. While modification of the alloy composition by the Mn, Cr content and presence of other transition metal elements affect the thermodynamic properties of the phases, these elements also significantly affect the kinetics of phase formation during solidification at high cooling rates including the resulting phase morphology. The formation of primary, intermetallic phases during melt conditioning closely above the solidification temperature of the (Al)-solid solution can be utilized for the removal of Fe by separating the primary, Fe-containing, intermetallic particles from the Fe-depleted Al melt. Removal of such particles by application of filters to increase the Fe-removal efficiency extends the filters’ use beyond the removal of nonmetallic inclusions, contributing to production of high-quality, recycled Al–Si alloys. Evaluation of wettability, chemical reactions and microstructure in the interaction region between the filter material and Al–Si melts and the Fe-depleted melt reveals a beneficial effect of C-bonded Al2O3 filter material.

Invasive plants have had significant impacts on vegetation communities of Zimbabwe. A study was undertaken to determine current and potential distribution of C. edulis in Zimbabwe using DIVA GIS and MAXENT, and to determine climatic conditions under which the species thrives, together with. The species population structure and its impact on native species. Results indicate that the species has its highest occurrence frequency in Manicaland Province, followed by Matebeleland South Province. Some 13% occurrence points were recorded at an altitude less than 600 m, 21% at an altitude ranging from 600–999 m, 43% at an altitude between 1000 and 1399 m and 23% at an altitude above 1400 m. C. edulis was recorded in areas of maximum temperature range of 34°C and a minimum of 20°C. The species also occurred in regions with a mean precipitation range as low as 60–300 mm and as high as 1000–1261 mm. Further, C. edulis distribution is predicted to expand in the Eastern Highlands (Manicaland), parts of Mazowe and Bindura (Mashonaland Central Province) and parts of Matobo (Matebelaland South Province). Diameter class distributions showed an inverse J-distribution in control sites and in all three sampled sections. An irregular bell-shaped distribution was recorded for co-occurring species on C. edulis occupied sites. It was concluded that C. edulis’ regeneration potential is high and that of competing native species is unstable and has the potential to expand beyond the currently occupied sites.

The goal of this work was to measure the temporally varying heat flux and surface temperature of a pipe calorimeter in a pool fire, and assess its uncertainty. Three large-scale fire tests were conducted at the Sandia National Laboratories outdoor fire test facility. In each test a cylindrical calorimeter was suspended above a water pool with JP8 fuel floating on top. The calorimeter was a 2.4 m diameter, 4.6 m long, and 2.5 cm wall thickness pipe with end-caps suspended 1 m above the 7.2 m diameter pool. 58 thermocouples were attached to the calorimeter interior surface and backed with 8 cm of insulation. The Sandia One-Dimensional Direct and Inverse Thermal (SODDIT) code was used to determine the calorimeter external surface heat flux and temperature from the measured interior surface temperature versus time. To determine the uncertainty of the SODDIT results, a simulation of the calorimeter in a fire similar to the experiments was performed using the Container Analysis Fire Environment (CAFE) computer code. In this code, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) fire model applies a temporally and spatially varying heat flux to the exterior surface of a Finite Element (FE) calorimeter model. Flux is similar but not identical to the flux in the experiment. The FE model calculates the internal calorimeter surface temperature, which is used by SODDIT to calculate heat flux which was compared to the applied values. The absorbed heat flux and surface temperature at one calorimeter location was calculated by SODDIT and then compared to the CAFE applied heat flux and surface temperature. From this comparison a base case uncertainty due to inherent inverse calculation errors and frequency smoothing methods is presented. Uncertainties in temperature measurements, calorimeter material properties and wall thickness were applied to the SODDIT calculation and iterated using the Monte Carlo method to determine the overall heat flux and surface temperature uncertainty. The total absorbed heat flux uncertainty at the one studied location is ±4.8 kW/m2 at 95% confidence. The outer surface temperature uncertainty for all data at the one studied location is ±6.6°C at 95% confidence. For all 58 measurement locations, the overall combined total absorbed heat flux uncertainty is ±13.8 kW/m2 at 95% confidence, surface temperature uncertainty is ±7.6°C. These uncertainties are valid only when the calorimeter temperature is not within the Curie temperature range of 999 to 1037K.

A high throughput microfluidic system including a 96 continuous flow (CF) thermal reactors and a multi-zone thermal control system was designed and fabricated. An infrared camera (IR) was used to analyze and verify the uniformity of the temperature distribution. Temperature variations from the nominal values were ±2°C in the denaturation zone and ±1°C in the renaturation and extension zones. Six different DNA fragments, with lengths ranging from 99 bp to 997 bp, were obtained from a λ-DNA template, each with a distinct renaturation temperature. As an initial demonstration of the biochemical performance of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reactor arrays, a column device comprised of eight 25-cycle CFPCRs was used to amplify identical PCR cocktails for each DNA fragment simultaneously at a flow velocity of 2 mm/s. All but the 997 bp were successfully amplified. Yields for the 99 bp fragment varied from 15%–36% of the amplicon on block thermal cycler. In a second experiment, a row device composed of six 25-cycle CFPCRs was used to successfully, simultaneously amplify cocktails for all six DNA fragment lengths at a flow velocity of 1 mm/s in parallel. Each device in the row had a distinct renaturation temperature to match the DNA fragment length. The parallel thermal arrays can be used in modular systems including both PCR for amplification and, for example, ligase detection reaction (LDR) for mutation detection.

Although it has been available for a number of years, Tc-99m RBC venography has never been evaluated in an epidemiological study. We have compared Tc-99m RBC venography to impedance plethysmography (IPG) in 113 consecutive eligible patients with clinically suspected first episode of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). IPG was performed at initial presentation (day 0) and RBC venography within the next 72 hours.RBC venography was performed by labelling in vitro 5ml of patients' red blood cell with 20 millicuries of Tc-99m. Patients with an initially abnormal IPG underwent contrast venography to rule out a falsely positive test result. Patients with an initially normal IPG had the test repeated at day 1, 3, 5 to 7 and 10 to 14. Anticoagulant treatment was witheld in all patients who remained normal by serial IPG testing. All patients underwent a 3 month follow-up period. RBC venography was considered abnormal if there was a 50% or greater decrease in isotope concentration in a deep vein compared to the same vein in the other leg. The sensitivity of RBC venography was 79% with 95% confidence limits (C. L.) from 59% to 92%. Specificity was 61% (95% C. L. from 51% to 71%). Positive and negative predictive values were 37% (95% C. L. from 25% to 51%) and 91% (95% C. L. from 81% to 96%) respectively. None of the patients who remained normal by serial IPG testing died from or had objectively documented venous thromboembolism during the follow-up period. We conclude that : 1)RBC venography is non-specific and, 2) a decision to treat should not be made on the basis of the results of this test alone in view of its low positive predictive value.

Copper dissolution and intermetallic compound (IMC) formation during reflow of soldered joints are critical issues for joint reliability. Most of studies in the literature aimed at the coarsening and growth of the IMC layer of the soldered joints during service and only limited data is available during soldering process. This is particularly true for lead-free solders, which have attracted the attention of researchers just recently. This paper presents an experimental study of copper dissolution and IMC growth of lead-free solders during the reflow process. Solder buttons of either Sn or Sn-3.5wt%Ag were reflowed over a copper (99.9% pure) substrate for various reflow time periods ranging from 10 seconds to 10 minutes. Four reflow temperatures were selected, 232°C, 250°C, 275°C and 300°C for pure tin and 221°C, 250°C, 275°C and 300°C for Sn-3.5%Ag respectively. The average thickness of the grown IMC layer and the amount of copper dissolved during reflow were determined using the images obtained from the metallurgical microscope. The kinetics of IMC growth and Cu dissolution were then quantified and the estimated kinetics parameters can be used to determine the copper dissolution and IMC layer thickness during reflow soldering.

In this study, tests of ductility and ductile to brittle transition temperature DBTT of both PtAl RT22 and MCrAlY Amdry 997 coatings on both single crystal and polycrystalline substrates (CMSX-4, SCB, and In792) have been carried out. An acoustic emission detection technique that makes the detection of coating failures (micro cracking and delamination) possible has been employed during the tensile tests. The acoustic emission AE detection has been calibrated on the uncoated substrates and on some coated specimens at various testing temperatures and at different strain rate, together with metallurgical examination. A correlation between AE signals and failure types is established. It has been found that the substrate materials generate also some AE signals during plastic deformation. The amplitude of the AE signals depends strongly on the type of substrate material and the testing temperature but slightly on the strain rate. The substrate emissions may disturb the detection of coating failure. However, except for the disturbance from the substrate materials, the AE is still a sensitive, reliable, and useful technique to detect coating failures at various temperatures. The ductility results determined in this study have shown that the overlay coating Amdry 997 has a lower DBTT ∼550°C and higher ductilities than the diffusion coating RT22. Both of these differences indicate that Amdry 997 is much more ductile than RT22.

Subcritical (hot/liquid) water was used in a simple static (non-flowing) vessel to treat three soils from former defense sites which were contaminated with the explosives TNT (12 wt.%), or RDX (0.62 wt.%) and HMX (0.16 wt. %). Significant degradation of RDX began at 100 C, and at 125 C for TNT and HMX, with the bulk of the undergraded explosives remaining in the soil rather than in the water phase. Based on HPLC/UV analysis, intermediate degradation products formed, but quickly degraded at < 250 C. Remediations performed using a generator-powered mobile pilot-scale unit (4 to 6 kg soil) with 4-L of water at 275 C for 1 h of real soils resulted in > 99.9% destrcution of TNT and HMX, and > 99.5% desstruction of RDX. None of the mutagenic nitroso derivatives of RDX and HMX were formed. “Microtox” acute toxicity tests with Vibrio fischeri showed no significant (compared to background) residual toxicity in either the process wastewaters or leachates from the treated soils. The operation is closed-loop (no air or water emissions), and process water can be recycled without treatment. Initial cost analysis indicates that the process should be competitive with other approaches such as bioremediation.

Introduction: Intraarticular fractures of the tibial plateau and periarticular fractures of the proximal tibia, caused by high energy trauma pose a therapeutic dilemma. Such fractures are associated with extensive soft tissue damage with or without compound injury. The management of such high velocity injuries become a challenge to the trauma surgeons. The goals of these periarticular fractures management are 1. Restoration of joint congruity by anatomic reduction 2. Stable xation of fractures thus allowing early movements 3. Proper care of injured soft tissues. In earlier days uniplanar external xation were used with various complications like pin track infections and decreased stability. In this study we present the use of hybrid external xation system which includes Ilizarov ring xator and AO rod external xator connected with indigenously manufactured connecting clamps and short shafts augmented with or without minimal internal xation. The purpose of this study is to assess the utility of this hybrid external xation system and to analyse the functional outcome, soft tissue healing and fracture union. To assess the performance of the Hybrid External Fixator Aim and Objective: in the treatment of different types of proximal tibial fractures, to evaluate the functional outcome, soft tissue healing and fracture union and radiological outcome, to evaluate the biomechanical and biological advantage of hybrid external xator, to assess the utility of the indigenously made connecting clamps. Material and Method: The study included 21 cases of periarticular fractures of the proximal tibia which were treated by use of 5/8th Ilizarov ring, AO tubular external xator and with indigenously manufactured connecting clamps & short shaft in a hybrid mode. All cases were prospectively followed up and studied. Almost all the cases (99%) had sustained Road trafc Accidents (high velocity injuries) except one case which had sustained injury by fall of cement wall over her leg. Minimum follow up – 1.5 months, maximum follow up – 12 months, mean follow up – 6.42 months. All fractures were followed according to a protocol. All fractures were treated with either CLOSED REDUCTION AND HYBRID EXTERNAL FIXATION OR WITH MINIMAL OPEN REDUCTION AND A HYBRID SYSTEM. The study group was consisted of 16 males (76%) and 5 females (24%) with an average age for males of 43.06 years (range 25 to 65) and for females of 53.4 years (range 41 to 59). All the patients were in the age group of 26 to 65 years, mean age is 43.09. In the present s Result: tudy of 21 cases, the use of Hybrid external xation, as a denite treatment, for high – energy proximal tibia bicondylar fractures proved to be benecial.

Objectives: 1) develop a thorough understanding of the sorption mechanisms of Pi and Po onto the Al/O- WTR; 2) determine the breakthrough range of the composite Al/O-WTR during P capturing from agro- wastewaters; and 3) critically evaluate the performance of the composite Al/O-WTR as a fertilizer using selected plants grown in lysimeters and test-field studies. Instead of lysimeters we used pots (Israel) and one- liter cone-tainers (USA). We conducted one field study but in spite of major pretreatments the soils still exhibited high enough P from previous experiments so no differences between control and P additions were noticeable. Due to time constrains the field study was discontinued. Background: Phosphorous, a non-renewable resource, has been applied extensively in fields to increase crop yield, yet consequently has increased the potential of waterway eutrophication. Our proposal impetus is the need to develop an innovative method of P capturing, recycling and reuse that will sustain agricultural productivity while concurrently reducing the level of P discharge from and to agricultural settings. Major Conclusions & Achievements: An innovative approach was developed for P removal from soil leachate, dairy wastewater (Israel), and swine effluents (USA) using Al-based water treatment residuals (Al- WTR) to create an organic-Al-WTR composite (Al/O-WTR), potentially capable of serving as a P fertilizer source. The Al-WTR removed 95% inorganic-P, 80% to 99.9% organic P, and over 60% dissolved organic carbon from the agro-industrial waste streams. Organic C accumulation on particles surfaces possibly enhanced weak P bonding and facilitated P desorption. Analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM- EDS), indicated that P was sparsely sorbed on both calcic and Al (hydr)oxide surfaces. Sorption of P onto WW-Al/O-WTR was reversible due to weak Ca-P and Al-P bonds induced by the slight alkaline nature and in the presence of organic moieties. Synchrotron-based microfocused X-ray fluorescence (micro-XRF) spectrometry, bulk P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), and P K-edge micro-XANES spectroscopy indicated that adsorption was the primary P retention mechanism in the Al- WTR materials. However, distinct apatite- or octocalciumphosphatelike P grains were also observed. Synchrotron micro-XRF mapping further suggested that exposure of the aggregate exteriors to wastewater caused P to diffuse into the porous Al-WTR aggregates. Organic P species were not explicitly identified via P K-edge XANES despite high organic matter content, suggesting that organic P may have been predominantly associated with mineral surfaces. In screen houses experiments (Israel) we showed that the highest additions of Al/O-WTR (5 and 7 g kg⁻¹) produced the highest lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolial) yield. Lettuce yield and P concentration were similar across treatments, indicating that Al/O- WTR can provide sufficient P to perform similarly to common fertilizers. A greenhouse study (USA) was utilized to compare increasing rates of swine wastewater derived Al/O-WTR and inorganic P fertilizer (both applied at 33.6, 67.3, and 134.5 kg P₂O₅ ha⁻¹) to supply plant-available P to spring wheat (TriticumaestivumL.) in either sandy loam or sandy clay loam soil. Spring wheat straw and grain P uptake were comparable across all treatments in the sandy loam, while Al/O-WTR application to the sandy clay loam reduced straw and grain P uptake. The Al/O-WTR did not affect soil organic P concentrations, but did increase phosphatase activity in both soils; this suggests that Al/O-WTR application stimulated microorganisms and enhance the extent to which microbial communities can mineralize Al/O-WTR-bound organic P. Implications: Overall, results suggest that creating a new P fertilizer from Al-WTR and agro-industrial waste sources may be a feasible alternative to mining inorganic P fertilizer sources, while protecting the environment from unnecessary waste disposal.
