Rashid, Haroon. "Butt fusion welding of polyethylene pipes". Thesis, Brunel University, 1997. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/6623.

Abstract (sommario):
The butt fusion process is extensively used in the joining of polyethylene (PE) pipes by the water and gas industries. This welding process although deceptively simple, is rather poorly understood, with much of the initial developments being of a rather empirical nature. The Water Research centre (WRc) have funded the present research in an attempt to optimise the welding of high pressure pipeline (PE100) systems. The main aims of this research were to investigate the effect of different welding conditions on the physical and mechanical properties of the joints produced and to investigate these effects on the micro- and macro-structures of the joints produced. A series of welds were made using Eltex Tub 124 and Rigidex 002-50 pipes of 180mm diameter. The fusion pressure and heatsoak times were varied. A milling machine witha twin cutter arrangement was used to obtain the test specimens from around the circumference of the pipes. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the effect of sample preparation methodology on the thermo-oxidative stability. Polarised light microscopy and image analysis were used to study the macro- and micro-structural developments in the weld joint. Joint strength was evaluated via standard and non-standard tensile test methods. Milling the samples to produce the test specimens was found to decrease significantly the thermo-oxidative resistance of the polymer. Reasons for this behaviour have been proposed. In order to achieve high quality thin films from microtomy, custom-made blades were used. This programme also developed the optimum polishing method for the microtomed blades. The macro-structure of the bead: its shape and dimensions were found to be a function of temperature and pressure. Correlation was found between the bead geometry and the position around the circumference of the pipe. The macrostructures within the weld zone also showed this dependence on the position along the circumference of the pipe. An examination of the microstructures of each weld had shown the presence of five different zones. The feasibility of using microtomed thin sections in a tensile test was demonstrated. The test method provides a means to study failure initiation and propagation in the tensile test specimen. Initial deformation was found to occur in the centre of the melt-affected zone (MAZ) and the final failure occurs at the junction of the weld bead and the bulk polymer. Tests on films without the weld bead showed that maximum deformation occurred at the centre of the sample within the MAZ. The presence of the bead and the asymmetry in the test specimens caused by the welding process were found to have a significant influence on the failure mode and the failure strain. The strain rate was also found to play a significant role in both beaded and debeaded samples. The failure was initiated from the pseudo notches in the beaded samples. In the debeaded sample the failure was within the MAZ.

Abstract (sommario):
The work described in this thesis details the investigation into flash butt weld failure at Corus, Port Talbot, where the process is used to join coils of steel, permitting cold rolling without interruption. The aim of this work was to examine the factors which constitute weld failure and to determine whether failure could be eliminated. It was shown that weld failure cannot be predicted with appreciable levels of confidence with the use of neural networks based on inputs such as steel composition and the thickness and width of the coils to be joined. 817 weld breaks were recorded during 2006, of which all but two were observed during cold rolling. Analysis of the samples provided indicate that in some case the term weld break was incorrectly used to describe what was in fact failure in the base material, away from the joint. Prior to this work there were no reported data on the residual stress levels generated after flash butt welding of sheet steel with a thickness of 2.5 mm. It is now clear that in addition to the expected tensile stress in the weld, there is also a compressive stress of up to 200 MPa in the base material which extends far beyond the heat-affected zone. This result may go someway to explain why failure in the base material is observed outside the heat-affected zone during cold rolling. Finally, a post-weld heat treatment for a high hardening boron-steel was examined. The heat treatment was intended to supersede previous attempts to reduce the post-weld cooling rate by applying a voltage across the weld to locally heat the region to a desired temperature.

Abstract (sommario):
This Master Thesis was performed in terms of robotic three dimensional friction stir welding with T-butt joint. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid state welding method that achieves the weld temperature by friction of a rotating non-consumable tool with the workpiece. Science and technology fast developing requires for higher seam quality and more complex welding joint geometry like 3D welds. In order to acquire high productivity, capacity and flexibility with acceptable cost, robotic FSW solution have been proposed. Instead of the standard FSW machine, using a robot to perform complicated welds such as, three-dimensional. In this report, a solution for weld a 3D T-butt joint, which located in an aluminium cylinder with 1.5 mm thickness using a robot, was developed. Moreover, two new paths were investigated in order to avoid the use of two welds to perform this type of joint. The paths were tested on 2D and on 3D (with a 5050 curvature radius) geometries. Both paths had good results. What is more, the parameter developing methods of FSW process, which is composed of necessary parameter setting, positional compensation was introduced. Specially, the study demonstrates how complicate geometry can be welded using a robot. Also,it shows that TWT temperature control is able to acquire high quality 3D welds. In addition, an analysis of the 2D welding and 3D welding was performed, which exposed that, keeping exactly the same welding conditions, higher lateral forces on the tool were found during 3D welding. Basis on the special case in this paper, when the tool goes like "climbing" the sample, the suffering force of tool decreasing with increasing the height(Z position); nevertheless, when the tool goes like "downhill", the suffering force of tool decreasing with decreasing the height (Z position). What is more, in 2D weld, increasing the downforce (Fz) results increasing the lateral forces which can be Fx and/or Fy. Finally, the future works suggestions were presented in terms of (1) performing the new paths into a real cylinder, (2) performing tensile test on the paths and comparing it with conventional path which weld twice, (3) researching how the downforce (Fz) influence the Fx and Fy during welding of different 3D geometries, (4) how the cooling rate of backing bar influence the seam quality when it is use the same welding parameters and (5) the effect of performing welds in the same welding temperature achieved with different combination of the tool rotational speed and downforce on the material properties

Lawson, Shaun W. "Automatic defect detection in industrial radioscopic and ultrasonic images". Thesis, University of Surrey, 1996. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843944/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes a number of approaches to the problems of automatic defect detection in ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) and X-ray radioscopic images of butt welds in steel plate. A number of novel image segmentation techniques are developed, two of which feature the use of backpropagation artificial neural networks. Two new methods for defect detection in ultrasonic TOFD images are described - the first uses thresholding of individual one-dimensional A-scans, and the second uses a neural network to classify pixels using two dimensional local area statistics. In addition, three new methods for defect detection in radioscopic images are described - the first is based on the use of two conventional spatial filters, the second uses grey level morphology to replace the 'blurring' stage of conventional "blur and subtract' procedures, and the third uses a neural network to classify pixels using raw grey level data at the input layer. It is considered that all five methods which have been developed show novelty in their methodology, design and implementation, most specifically in that (1) no previous methods for automatic defect detection in TOFD images, (2) very few successful implementations of grey level data processing by neural networks, and (3) few examples of local area segmentation of 'real' textured images for automatic inspection have been reported in the literature. The methods developed were tested against data interpreted by skilled NDT inspectors. In the case of the ultrasonic TOFD image processing, both automatic methods performed exceptionally well, producing results comparable to that of a human inspector. In the case of the radioscopic image processing, the ANN method also produced results comparable to that achieved by a human inspector and also gave comparable or consistently better results than those obtained using a number of existing techniques.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of the study was to examine factors that influence the strength of butt welds and gain an understanding of the process of failure. The study was divided into several sectors. The first and primary part of the programme was to determine the extent to which the pipe system's long-term strength under both internal fluctuating and constant pressure is reduced by the presence of axially misaligned butt welds. The second objective was to examine fracture initiation sites and crack propagation paths of the failed aligned and misaligned butt welded samples in relation to the melt flow zone and the weld bead in order to establish the cause of failure. Finally the project considered the influence of selected welding parameters on the fatigue performance of aligned butt fusion welds and an investigation into the influence of elevated temperature (79°C) testing technique on the basic material's properties. Fatigue and stress-rupture lifetimes were found to decrease significantly with increasing axial misalignment at the butt fusion weld in 63,90 and 125mm MDPE pipe systems at 79°C in a water environment. In the butt fusion weld having axial misalignment of 20 per cent of the wall thickness and above, the reduction in the fatigue and stress-rupture lifetime was greater than 50 per cent compared to the aligned weld. It was not clear whether there is a pipe size effect or not; there was no marked change in the fatigue performance of misaligned butt welds for the three pipe diameters examined. However, the fatigue performance of the aligned butt welds in 90 and 125mm was noticeably better compared to 63mm pipe systems. The stress rupture performance of misaligned butt welds in 90 and 125mm MDPE pipes was more than halved compared to those in 63mm pipe systems. Both the fatigue and stress rupture performance of misaligned butt welds could be explained in terms of amplified axial stress and in general, the Ory expression for evaluating the increase in axial stress due to misalignment appears to be valid. The temperature dependence of the fatigue performance of aligned and misaligned butt fusion welds in 63 and 90mm MDPE pipe systems suggests that if continuous internal fluctuating pressure under the conditions examined is maintained, then the butt fusion welds with axial misalignment of below 10 per cent of the wall thickness may well meet the design lifetime of 50 years at the service termperature. Under stress-rupture conditions, all the misaligned butt welds considered in the three pipe diameters surpassed the minimum specified requirement of 170 hours at 79°C. The fatigue was the most aggresive condition of the two for minor misalignment. Examination of the circumferential butt weld failures revealed that the crack invariably initiated from the notch located at the inner weld bead and no preferred crack propagation path was taken in relation to the melt flow zone. It was proved that the notch was responsible for the observed circumferential failure of aligned butt welds in 63mm MDPE pipes by testing these butt fusion welds where the internal weld bead was machined off. The failure site for the internal weld bead machined off sample was in the pipe remote from the weld inferring that the material in the melt flow zone does not constitute any weakness. The effect of elevated temperature (79°C) testing in 63mm HDPE pipe was found to increase the density (and crystallinity) signifying a slow annealing process in the material. However, the changes in these parameters were not of sufficient scale to strongly influence the performance. The main effect of elevated temperature testing in water environment appears to be the extraction of stabiliser from the base polymer as was indicated by the rapid decrease in oxidation induction time with the ageing times.

Abstract (sommario):
The demand of stronger and lighter constructions are rapidly growing. Today's applications vary over a large range industries where the requirements are di_erent from product to product. Therefore, the focus of much research are the 3rd generation of so called Advance High-Strength Steels (AHSS). These are high-strength steels that are taylormade to get desired mechanical properties. One AHSS manufactured by SSAB is their Strenx 1100Plus steel that is specially design to get excellent welding properties. In this project it was investigated if the two post weld treatments TIG dressing and HFMI has a larger e_ect in the material then the recommendations for steel in general by the International institute of Welding (IIW). By comparing nominal fatigue stresses to standards it could be determined that the post treatment improves the fatigue life with 1 more fatigue class then the recommendations for each treatment. E_ective notch stress simulations was used to derive S-N curves for comparative reasons.

Abstract (sommario):
Deformation and stresses in butt-welding of plates were studied. The work includes numerical simulation and experimental verification. The simulations were performed by use of the finite element method. Temperature dependence of material properties and phase transformations were considered. A thermo-elastoplastic material model was used. Plane stress conditions were assumed. Automatic butt-welding of plates without backing needs close tolerances of joint geometry. The thermally induced deformations and stresses are of great importance for joint geometry during welding. Therefore the change of gap width in front of the moving arc has been of special interest in these studies. The residual stresses, which may affect inservice behaviour of welded plates, were also calculated and measured. The tack-welds were found to influence the change in gap width in front of the moving arc. A proper tack-welding procedure is important in order to avoid large changes in gap width during butt-welding. The tack-welds should be made as soon after each other as possible. The sequence in which the tack-welds are made also affect the change in gap width. The gap width increased during the last part of the butt-welding in the simulations performed in this work. This increase was larger for wide plates than for narrow plates. Residual stresses close to the weld were large. The effective stress reached the yield limit of the material in the weld line.

Abstract (sommario):
Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl.) has been identified as a species with considerable potential for plantation forestry in New Zealand. Investment decisions in high value alternate species must be based on accurate wood quality and value predictions. There is an opportunity to extend non-destructive evaluation tools available to redwood growers, and to present the outputs of the growth model by log products and sawn timber. A redwood pruned buttlog sawing simulator has been developed however the simulator had not been tested with real data. Twelve redwood trees from Mangatu estate were selected for a sawing study; these logs were reconstructed and run through the sawing simulator. Computerised log processing was used to produce simulated pruned log sawing outturn from the redwood Buttlog Sawing Simulator, and results were compared to real results from a sawing study. The objective of the study was therefore to determine how well the simulator matched volume and grade out-turn from twelve logs. This study found the many inconsistencies between simulated data and real data; particularly related to log size. While this study was unsuccessful in validation of the redwood sawing simulator, it provides initial insight into the simulators strengths and short comings.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent empirical evidence supports the theoretical stance that fiction provides vicarious experiences of imagined spaces and situations that can help shape our perceptions of the real world, our social others, and the self. The implications for this are especially interesting for adolescents, as their brains undergo a restructuring during puberty, making them more responsive to change in executive function and social cognition. Few scholars have yet addressed how texts instruct young readers in how to use their developing cognition to assess characters' emotions and behavior, and how fiction can potentially affect these readers' cognitive and emotional development. This thesis analyzes the concept that potential adolescent readers can engage with a novel's characters' thoughts and behaviors by using their improving cognitive abilities to transmute what is on the page into real-life coping strategies. This phenomenon is especially compelling when considering the potential impact empowered female characters could have on adolescent girl readers, since their malleable brain around puberty makes them more receptive to accepting ideas - such as a person's gender not being a limitation. I examine what the primary texts themselves offer to potential readers, and analyze certain aspects of the texts that could be linked to potential readers' cognitive and affective engagement. The primary texts I have chosen are Tamora Pierce's two narrative quartets (The Song of the Lioness and Protector of the Small) that deal with characters from the fictional land of Tortall, as they focus closely on female characters in fantasy realms who are breaking gendered stereotypes by training to become knights. Pierce's books are representative of this adolescent feminist fantasy. I extrapolate that findings from this thesis will be applicable to other kinds of adolescent feminist fantasy texts; namely, that adolescent feminist fantasy fiction can beneficially change potential readers behavior and cognition.

Abstract (sommario):
The welding process introduces residual stress originating from the heating, melting and cooling of the material. From the point of view of fatigue and stress corrosion cracking, the weld residual stress perpendicular to the weld axis is of particular interest. When qualifying weld parameters for welds in large cylinders having a ratio of radius to plate thickness larger than say approximately 100; reference to plane plates are often made for the sake of simplicity. However, the weld residual stress perpendicular to the weld axis is severely underestimated in the plane plate compared with the cylindrical structure. This observation is especially pronounced in connection with preheating. The source of the differences is probably due to the radial constraint of the cylinder, compared with that of a plane plate. A plane test specimen will underestimate the weld residual stress perpendicular to the weld axis in a cylinder, even if the radius of the cylinder is very large. However, a test specimen for an 8 m diameter cylinder with a plate thickness of 35 mm needs only to have a segment width of approximately 1.3 m to reflect the stress in the real structure. The weld residual stress perpendicular to the weld axis in the vicinity of the weld toe is governed by the depositing of the weld bead adjacent to the weld toe, neglecting the accumulated strain from the previous deposited weld beads in the multi-pass joint weld. Introducing tensile straining perpendicular to the weld axis during the entire welding procedure reduces the weld-induced residual stress after completed welding. The plastic zone of the weld area will be subjected to compressive strain after completed welding, which in turn will reduce the weld residual stress. This can be achieved by cooling the weld area, which in this case is not recommended since the material is sensitive to hydrogen cracking, or by pre-stretching or modifying the locations for preheating, all aimed to impose a tensile axial straining around the weld area during the entire welding process.

This project critiques the performance of class identity through the works of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century colonial and early national period authors using the lens of humor, primarily as posed by Elliot Oring and Henri Bergson's theories of laughter and the ridiculous. My argument is that under the guise of laughter these works conceal the underpinnings of an American class system which can be revealed through close reading and historical research. In my dissertation, I examine the performance of each author in his or her own autobiography and the reflection of that performance within the larger frame of the development of American status structures. The characters in the texts of the authors I work with in this project demonstrate the use of the comic persona to, as scholar Robert Micklus states, "locate the butt of ridicule anywhere but in their own mirrors"; however, in my project I examine this within the context of class. Chapter I examines the work of Madame Sarah Knight, The Journal of Madame Knight, and William Byrd II's The Secret History of the Line --both of whom use humor to disguise their class insecurities. In Chapter II, I examine the performance of class hierarchy, as seen through Franklin's Autobiography and John Robert Shaw's John Robert Shaw: An Autobiography of Thirty Years, 1777-1807. In Chapter III, I examine the complications of race involved in class relations, using John Marrant's autobiography, A Narrative of the Life of John Marrant, a Free Black. Chapter IV examines David Crockett's humorous performance of the middle landscape frontiersman as part of a valorized national identity in The Narrative of David Crockett. The ideology that prompts the so-called invisibility of class in United States society today requires us to examine it under a critical lens; this project uses humor as that lens. In questioning the laughter of early American texts, we can see the class divides of early American society being created--an important step to realizing how these divides are maintained in our world today.

Abstract (sommario):
A recent method in aero engine production is to fabricate components from smaller pieces, rather than machining them from large castings. This has made laser beam welding popular, offering high precision with low heat input and distortion, but also high productivity. At the same time, the demand for automation of production has increased, to ensure high quality and consistent results. In turn, the need for sensors to monitor and control the laser welding process is increasing. In laser beam welding without filler material, the gap between the parts to be joined must be narrow. Optical sensors are often used to measure the gap, but with precise machining, it may become so narrow that it is difficult to detect, with the risk of welding in the wrong position. This kind of problems can cause severe welding defects, where the parts are only partially joined without any visible indication. This thesis proposes the use of an inductive sensor with coils on either side of the gap. Inducing currents into the metal, such a sensor can detect even gaps that are not visible. The new feature of the proposal is based on using the complex response of each coil separately to measure the distance and height on both sides of the gap, rather than an imbalance from the absolute voltage of each coil related to gap position. This extra information allows measurement of gap width and misalignment as well as position, and decreases the influence from gap misalignment to the position measurement. The sensor needs to be calibrated with a certain gap width and height alignment. In real use, these will vary, causing the sensor to be less accurate. Using initial estimates ofthe gap parameters from the basic sensor, a model of the response can be used to estimate the measurement error of each coil, which in turn can be used for compensation to improve the measurement of the gap properties. The properties of the new method have been examined experimentally, using a precise traverse mechanism to record single coil responses in a working range around a variable dimension gap, and then using these responses to simulate a two coil probe. In most cases errors in the measurement of weld gap position and dimensions are within 0.1 mm.The probe is designed to be mounted close to the parts to be welded, and will work in a range of about 1 mm to each side and height above the plates. This is an improvement over previous inductive sensors, that needed to be guided to the mid of the gap by a servo mechanism.

Abstract (sommario):
Cigarette butts are rapidly accumulating on our planet; trillions of them are discarded every year. In this paper, I examine why cigarette litter is a problem. I first discuss the biodegradability of filters and its scientific basis, including ways to enhance degradation rates by chemically manipulating filters. I also talk about the persistence of cigarette chemicals and their potential toxic effects on children and animals. I consider other social, economic, and environmental consequences of cigarette filters and chemicals. Furthermore, I discuss various solutions smokers and non-smokers alike have created to address the problem of cigarette litter; these methods come from a wide range of artistic, science-based, and policy-based perspectives. Finally, my thesis examines this issue in the context of a college campus – Pomona College in Claremont, CA. I discuss a map showing the number of cigarette litter around buildings and sidewalks on campus and consider factors that influence the location and high counts of litter. Finally, I make recommendations for the college based on my findings.

Shaheer, Muhammad. "Effects of welding parameters on the integrity and structure of HDPE pipe butt fusion welds". Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/16919.

Abstract (sommario):
Butt fusion welding process is an extensively used method of joining for high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. With the increasing number of HDPE resin and pipe manufacturers and the diversity of industries utilising HDPE pipes, a wide range of different standards have evolved to specify the butt fusion welding parameters with inspection and testing methods, to maintain quality and structural integrity of welds. There is a lack of understanding and cohesion in these standards for the selection of welding parameters; effectiveness, accuracy, and selection of the test methods and; correlation of the mechanical properties to the micro and macro joint structure. The common standards (WIS 4-32-08, DVS 2207-1, ASTM F2620, and ISO 21307) for butt fusion welding were used to derive the six welding procedures. A total of 48 welds were produced using 180 mm outer diameter SDR 11 HDPE pipe manufactured from BorSafe™ HE3490-LS black bimodal PE100 resin. Three short term coupon mechanical tests were conducted. The waisted tensile test was able to differentiate the quality of welds using the energy to break parameter. The tensile impact test due to specimen geometry caused the failure to occur in the parent material. The guided side bend specimen geometry proved to be too ductile to be able to cause failures. A statistical t-test was used to analyse the results of the short term mechanical tests. The circumferential positon of the test specimen had no impact on their performance. Finite element analysis (FEA) study was conducted for the long term whole pipe tensile creep rupture (WPTCR) test to find the minimum length of pipe required for testing based on pipe geometry parameters of outer diameter and SDR. Macrographs of the weld beads supplemented with heat treatment were used to derive several weld bead parameters. The FEA modelling of the weld bead parameters identified the length to be a key parameter and provided insight into the relationship between the geometry of the weld beads and the stresses in the weld region. The realistic bead geometry digitised using the macrographs contributed a 30% increase in pipe wall stress due to the stress concentration effect of the notches formed between the weld beads and the pipe wall. The circumferential position of the weld bead had no impact on the pipe wall stresses in a similar manner to the results of the different mechanical tests. IV Nanoindentation (NI) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques were used to study the weld microstructure and variation of mechanical properties across the weld at the resolutions of 100 and 50 microns, respectively. NI revealed signature 'twin-peaks and a valley' distribution of hardness and elastic modulus across the weld. The degrees of crystallinity obtained from DSC followed the NI pattern as crystallinity positively correlates with the material properties. Both techniques confirm annealing of the heat affected zone (HAZ) material towards the MZ from the parent material. The transmission light microscopy (TLM) was used to provide dimensions of the melt zone (MZ) which displays an hour glass figure widening to the size of the weld bead root length towards the pipe surfaces. Thermal FEA modelling was validated using both NI and TLM data to predict the HAZ size. The HAZ-parent boundary temperature was calculated to be 105 ⁰C. The 1st contribution of the study is to prove the existence of a positive correlation between the heat input calculated from FEA and the energy to break values obtained from the waisted tensile test. The 2nd contribution providing the minimum length of pipe for WPTCR based on the pipe dimensions. The 3rd contribution is the recommendation for the waisted tensile test with the test using the geometry designed to minimise deformation of the loading pin holes. The 4th contribution related the weld bead parameters to pipe wall stresses and the effect of notches as stress concentrators. The 5th contribution is a new method of visualising a welding procedure that can be used to not only compare the welding procedures but also predict the size of the MZ and the HAZ. The 6th contribution of the study is the proposal of new weld bead geometry that consist of the MZ bounded by the HAZ, for butt fusion welded joints of HDPE pipes.

Abstract (sommario):
Although high strength steels represent yield strength up to 1300 MPa, welded structures reveal lowerstrength values. The strongest commercially available electrode provides the yield strength of about900 MPa. Therefore, in welded steels with strength above this type of filler metal, achieving anacceptable global strength is a crucial issue. In this master thesis, affects of different welding procedures on static strength of welded jointsof Weldox 960 and Weldox 1100 steels, were studied. These steels are produced by SSAB inOxelösund. Meanwhile, finite element method analyses were applied in order to investigatethe static strength behavior of such weldments under uniaxial tension. The welding parameters which were selected as variables are:  Heat input Weld joint geometry Filler metal When weld metal is undermatching in strength levels than the base material, by applyingtension the soft weld metal begins to deform before parent metal. At that point thedeformation of resulted soft zone, including the weld metal and the heat affected zone, ishindered by high strength parent metal. Thus, uniaxial stress caused by uniaxial load isconverted to multiaxial stress. This conversion in tension results in increase in the staticstrength of weldment. The increase in strength is emphasized by increase in the width of thewelded joint while the thickness of the plate is kept as constant. After experiments and performing FEM studies, it was revealed that the static strength ofWeldox 960 welded joints approaches towards the tensile strength of parent metal by increasein the width of the weldment. In Weldox 1100 joints; a slight increase in tensile properties ofthe weldments, when the width of the sample increases, was observed.

Abstract (sommario):
Pipe and ring blanks can be produced in several different ways. Today's focus on environmental effects motivates companies to develop processes that are as efficient as possible in their production. Ringsvets AB is a company that produces pipe and ring blanks from a flat stock by rolling and welding the piece to make it stay in its desired form. The direct benefit of the method is the minimizing of material loss, and it has thereby both environmental and economical advantages. The downside of the method is that the processes involved changes the mechanical behavior of the ring, locally around the weld zone. The focus of this master thesis is the processes and how they affect the material, both microstructure and behavior. The processes involved are; rolling, welding, shaping, brushing, forging, heat treatment, and calibration. The purpose of this work was to elevate the knowledge and understanding of the processes at Ringsvets. The goals were to give a theoretical description of them along with practical test results and explanations of how and why they function in reality. A literature study has been conducted which provided a theoretical basis on how the material reacts on certain processes. Practical examination of samples from current production has been done to get evidence of how well the processes are used, and how well they function, in today's production. Lastly, the main focus of the thesis, an evaluation has been made; do theory and practice correlate, and should anything be changed to correlate better? The results showed that the first operations do not alter the material behavior to an unacceptable extent. Forging, on the other hand, gives the material a very high hardness in the weld zone, and that needs to be corrected. The following heat treatment should compensate for that in a perfect world, but does not in reality. The finished ring shows good properties in general but with places where the heat treatment has failed to correct the uneven behavior induced by earlier operations. The heat treatment requires some adjustments before it functions as intended. Some grainshas not been recrystallized which makes them very hard and non-ductile. Future tests using a higher temperature or a longer heat treatment time would reveal the best way to adjust the heat treatment to obtain the desired properties. Other changes in the processes could also be benecial. Interesting things to try and change would, for example, be the degree of deformation in the forging, which affects the recrystallization temperature. Notes should be taken that this examination is done on just one sample of just one size. Analyses of different samples of different sizes should be done to ensure of the accuracy of the examination.

Abstract (sommario):
Joints in structures always cause strength reduction. The percentage of strength reduction depends upon the selection of several factors such as: type of joint (i.e. adhesive or mechanical), technique of joint (i.e. lap joint, butt joint etc.), geometry of joint, mode of load application etc. Here in this research, the strength of adhesively bonded butt joints with several geometries, later referred as joint angles, is investigated under uniaxial tension loading. Adhesively bonded simple butt joints, where joints are placed perpendicular to the loading direction are in common practice mainly because of ease in manufacturing process. But when the joint is fabricated with an angle respective to the loading direction, the geometry of the joint itself affects the strength of the joint significantly. Without going too deep into other factors that affects the joint strength such as manufacturing techniques, manufacturing defects, material behavior etc. only the geometry of the joint is considered and it is evaluated whether it is worth to change the joint geometry or not. The significant issue in adhesive joint technology is the prediction of joint strength. However, an approach similar to plastic yield criterion later referred as elastic limit offset method (attempted for 0.025% offset) is considered to estimate the linear elastic limit. Since RUAG Space AB (the industry for which this project is performed) is only interested in the linear elastic regime of the stress-strain curve, therefore the elastic limit offset method is considered to be the suitable one. The present work is concerned with the study of adhesively bonded angled butt joint vs. strength behavior. The strength of adhesively bonded butt joints is examined for several butt joint angles under uniaxial tensile loading. The employed butt joint angles are: 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 75°. The main objective of the current investigation is to find the joint angle that has the highest strength or the highest capability of load transfer. In addition to the above, the influence of the joint on the stress field, joint strength and type of failure is also evaluated using DSP (Digital Speckle Photography) technique and simulated using well known finite element tool, ABAQUS. It is observed that specific strength of the joint is greatly influenced with joint angle. The 45° joint showed the highest elasticity and failed like ductile behavior whereas 75° joint showed the lowest elasticity and failure was purely brittle. Moreover, post-failure inspection of fractured surfaces showed cohesive failure (failure within adhesive layers) for 0°, 30°, 45° and 60°whereas 75° showed composite or adherend failure. The simulation is performed for each joint angle. However to validate the model only 45° and 75° joints results are compared with experimental results and plotted in the report. The simulation results of these angles showed good agreement with the experimental ones. Moreover, the stress fields for each joint angle are captured (from ABAQUS), showing that all joints are susceptible to inter-laminar shear. Besides, the relative slip between the top and middle adherends is also calculated, the results show that, the 45° joint has higher tendency of relative slip than others.
