Abstract (sommario):
This thesis focuses on modeling of business processes which are very sensitive on correct capturing of process details characterized as process events and states. At the beginning of the analysis are the process events and states classified into three types: activity related, object related and time related. Each type is analyzed in detail and there are formulated states and their transitions that form a lifecycle of each individual type of the process state. There are discussed contemporary process modeling languages starting from the very popular to relatively less known, all representing slightly different approach towards process modeling. The analysis of process events and states shows that the contemporary process modeling languages cover the defined lifecycles only partially. There are picked three popular process modeling languages and put through a test case, which is based on Czech regulation of a building process. This test case allows us to review their capabilities to capture the process events including the ways how they get along with their only partial support. Upon analysis of process events and states and the unsatisfying results of the con-temporary process modeling languages in the test case, there is introduced a new process modeling language which, as demonstrated, is capable of capturing many of the process events and states in the test case in much simpler and precise way that the three reviewed process modeling languages were able to.

Abstract (sommario):
This diploma thesis deals with the usage of agents in business process modelling. The aim is to identify possible uses in the problem area and to evaluate their potential. Intended usage is analysed on the basis of the objectives of process modelling. Described in detail, it focuses on potential application of agents in a process modelling itself, in deploying executable and flexible processes, process improvements and finally in dynamic planning. A further objective is to provide an overview of current research and literature in problem area. To fulfil the goal available literature is analysed and basis approaches are demonstrated in case study. Paper does not address the implementation of multi-agent systems (MAS). Following introduction reader is guided though basic elements of the processes and their modelling, concept of agents and modelling of MAS. As a process modelling notation BPMN in planned 2.0 release was selected. Next section is devoted to the usage of agents. The last part of the work is a case study discussing the possibilities of agents application in company operating public car auctions. In addition the process model (BPMN) transformation to agent model is presented and further developed as a interconnection between process modelling and agent-based systems. Combination of agent approach with business rules and hybrid simulation are proposed as the most promising usages.

Abstract (sommario):
This work deals with the possibilities of using agents and multiagent systems in the areas of business process management and business process modeling. The aim of the theoretical part is to describe the theory of artificial agents, to assess the benefits of this approach and to describe current applications of MAS in BPM. In the theoretical part I also describe the issue of management and business process modeling and methodology MMABP. The aim of the analytical part is to summarize the possibilities of using MAS in BPM in the situations where business processes are already described and modeled and in the situations where there are no such descripctions nor models yet . In this part I also want to introduce my theory of agent-process, which is the possibility of looking at processes as autonomous agents. This theory is presented in practical demonstrations and examples by using the TROPOS methodology, and this theory is supported by references from the areas of agent and business process modeling.

Abstract (sommario):
The constant changes in governmental and customer requirements are forcing organizations to adapt in today’s dynamic market. Challenges such as international competition, increased cost pressure and efficient resource allocation are just a few examples of what organizations currently are facing. The need of managing business processes has become evident, as processes describes how well the organization is operating. Processes are no longer seen as just a tool, but as a way to visualize and standardize the organization in order to decrease variation and waste. With limited resources, ABB HVC has been working with business processes for over 20 years without any major influence since the competition has not required it. During the last three years the focus has shifted and business processes are now a hot topic. A stance has been taken and ABB HVC is now aiming to become a process-oriented organization. To become a process-oriented organization, ABB HVC needs a solid foundation built around processes. This project aims to satisfy a part of that foundation by designing a process for the technology department. As the technology department currently lacks a defined process, they cannot in a clear and visual way describe how they operate. Most of the time spent during this project, was focused on designing a functional process and to identify options for development. The research type of this project is a change focused research with an action research strategy. The selected approach is a design research methodology with qualitative data collection. In order to gather all the required information to complete the task, a literature review and an empirical analysis of ABB HVC were conducted. The result of this project was a process map describing the workflow and interactions of the technology department. An implementation plan, tools and suggested improvements have also been included in the report to provide the technology department with a strategy in how to continue the process work.

Abstract (sommario):
Many relationship-based studies focus on how businesses are maintained and developed. However, little attention focused on individuals as business initiators and the consequent processes. This study will bridge this gap. A theoretical model with two cases will answer two questions    -How individuals initiate business through personal network? -What is the consequent process?   The studies demonstrate that individual do play a very important role when initiating a new business and they set in motion relationship-building processes that change the network structure.   The contribution for research and management is clear. The netentrepruer is a new ‘actor’ and can be useful in future studies of business networks. Management can usefully become conscious of the possibilities they have in studying their network contacts before initiating new businesses. Managers should utilize managing individual’s networks as new competition strategies. This will modify the view of management strategy and also contribute to theory building.

Abstract (sommario):
Processes are omnipresent in humans’ everyday activities: withdrawals from an ATM, loan requests from a bank, renewals of driver’s licenses, purchases of goods from online retail systems. In particular, the business domain has strongly embraced processes as an instrument to help in the organization of business operations, leading to so-called business processes. A business process is a set of logically-related tasks performed to achieve a defined business outcome. Business processes have a big impact on the achievement of business goals and they are widely acknowledged as one of the more important assets of any organization next to the organization’s customer basis and, more recently, data. Thus, there is a high interest in keeping business processes performing at their best and improving those that do not perform well. Nowadays, business processes are supported by a wide range of enabling technologies, including Web services and business process engines, which enable the (partial)automation of processes. Information systems supporting the execution of processes typically store a wealth of process knowledge that includes process models, process progression information and business data. The availability of such process knowledge gives unprecedented opportunities to get insight into business processes, which leads to the question of how to exploit this knowledge for facilitating the improvement of processes. In order to answer this question, we propose to exploit process knowledge from two different but complementary perspectives. In the first one, we take the process execution perspective and leverage on process execution data generated by information systems to analyze and understand the actual behavior of executed processes. In the second one, we take the process design perspective and propose to extract process model patterns from existing models for reuse in the design of processes. The final goal of this thesis is to facilitate process improvement by exploiting existing process knowledge not only for gaining insight into and understanding of processes but also for reusing the resulting knowledge in the improvement thereof. We have successfully applied our approaches in the context of service-based business processes and assisted dataflow-based mashup development. In the former, we validated our approach through a end-user study of the usability and understandability of our approach and tools, while in the latter the evaluations were performed through experiments run on a dataset of models from the mashup tool Yahoo! Pipes.

Smirnov, Sergey. "Business process model abstraction". Phd thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2011. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2012/6025/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Business process models are used within a range of organizational initiatives, where every stakeholder has a unique perspective on a process and demands the respective model. As a consequence, multiple process models capturing the very same business process coexist. Keeping such models in sync is a challenge within an ever changing business environment: once a process is changed, all its models have to be updated. Due to a large number of models and their complex relations, model maintenance becomes error-prone and expensive. Against this background, business process model abstraction emerged as an operation reducing the number of stored process models and facilitating model management. Business process model abstraction is an operation preserving essential process properties and leaving out insignificant details in order to retain information relevant for a particular purpose. Process model abstraction has been addressed by several researchers. The focus of their studies has been on particular use cases and model transformations supporting these use cases. This thesis systematically approaches the problem of business process model abstraction shaping the outcome into a framework. We investigate the current industry demand in abstraction summarizing it in a catalog of business process model abstraction use cases. The thesis focuses on one prominent use case where the user demands a model with coarse-grained activities and overall process ordering constraints. We develop model transformations that support this use case starting with the transformations based on process model structure analysis. Further, abstraction methods considering the semantics of process model elements are investigated. First, we suggest how semantically related activities can be discovered in process models-a barely researched challenge. The thesis validates the designed abstraction methods against sets of industrial process models and discusses the method implementation aspects. Second, we develop a novel model transformation, which combined with the related activity discovery allows flexible non-hierarchical abstraction. In this way this thesis advocates novel model transformations that facilitate business process model management and provides the foundations for innovative tool support.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of my thesis is the optimization of selected business processes in the specific company. These are processes, which optimization will lead to save time, money and will generate additional income and increase the current level of profit significantly. In my thesis, I proposed several indicators of metrics and describe new information systems that will be part of optimized processes. In the first part I present the theoretical aspects and the transition from functional to process management, modeling based on different methodologies, standards and measuring the performance of individual processes. In the next chapter I am dealing with the practical application of theoretical knowledge on a specific company. First I briefly introduce this company, define its position in the market, and going through complex of strategic analysis. Next I give solution how to find out the problematic aspects of the most critical processes and then I suggest optimization. An important part of this thesis are suggested metrics and indicators for these metrics, which are monitored and evaluate targets of each individual process and thus his successful implementation. After incorporating the proposed optimization, the company has significantly shifted not only in monitored metrics, but will also increase its value. These ideas I will summarize in the end of the work.

Abstract (sommario):
The main goal of this work is to create some kind of simple methodology that can help to improve effectiveness of public organizations. There're a lot of theories and methodologies focused on this topic and there is a good chance many new ones will be presented in the future. These came mainly from management field and sometimes from other fields as well. This work focuses mainly on Business Process Reengineering and combines it with other methodologies hoping, it will help in a process improvements in the public sector. Focus is on Czech Republic but this work should be useful to other countries as well, if necessary changes are made in order to shape things that are different between the countries. In this work, a whole project cycle of the public organization processes improvement project can be found, but some project phases will be explained in more detail then the other. Focus is on the analytic parts of the project (strategy creation, use of UML, BSC and other models and methodologies like that) rather than the project management parts of the project. All the practical examples are from public sector organization -- namely the administrative office of one of the city districts of Prague. After reading this work, reader should have moderate understanding of the application of a BPR methodology in the public sector and how it can be supported by other methodologies. There is also big portion of models and diagrams in this work showing pieces of reality from chosen public organization. Their meaning is to show what is usually done in this kind of project and how to understand the models. This works goal isn't creation of a guideline to UML or any other modeling principles.

Abstract (sommario):
Separation of concerns has long been considered an effective and efficient strategy to deal with complexity in information systems. One sort of concern, like security and privacy, crosses over other concerns in a system. Such concerns are called cross-cutting concerns. As a result, the realization of these concerns is scattered through the whole system, which makes their management difficult. Aspect Orientation is a paradigm in information systems which aims to modularize cross-cutting concerns. This paradigm is well researched in the programming area, where many aspect-oriented programming languages have been developed, e.g., AspectJ.It has also been investigated in other areas, such as requirement engineering and service composition. In the Business Process Management (BPM) area, Aspect Oriented Business Process Modeling aims to specify how this modularization technique can support encapsulating cross-cutting concerns in process models. However, it is not clear how these models should be supported in the whole BPM lifecycle. In addition, the support for designing these models has only been limited to imperative process models that support rigid business processes.Neither has it been investigated how this modularization technique can be supported through declarative or hybrid models to support the separation of cross-cutting concerns for flexible business processes. Therefore, this thesis investigates how aspect orientation can be supported over the whole BPM lifecycle using imperative aspect-oriented business process models. It also investigates how declarative and hybrid aspect-oriented business process models can support the separation of cross-cutting concerns in the BPM area. This thesis has been carried out following the design science framework, and the result is presented as a set of artifacts (in the form of constructs, models, methods, and instantiations) and empirical findings. The artifacts support modeling, analysis, implementation/configuration, enactment, monitoring, adjustment, and mining cross-cutting concerns while supporting business processes using Business Process Management Systems. Thus, it covers the support for the management of these concerns over the whole BPM lifecycle. The use of these artifacts and their application shows that they can reduce the complexity of process models by separating different concerns.

Abstract (sommario):
This research was undertaken to explore the potential application of Human Resource (HR) Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) as an appropriate service delivery mechanism. The investigation included the identification of the primary internal drivers and external factors affecting HR departments, to craft the framework within which to consider HR BPO. Then the processes that could be delivered by HR BPO were identified. The study concluded with the identification of the critical success factors for implementing HR BPO and the expected benefits. The research was conducted by means of 26 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with senior HR managers and HR professionals. The respondents represented various industries and sectors and included leading South African organisations and a range of global organisations. The resulting findings first introduce the bridge principle, to ensure that HR transformation is not at the expense of line management. Secondly a decision model, which incorporates benefit realisation principles, was developed to assess the applicability of HR BPO for processes. The findings conclude with a success factor condition table that highlights the critical success factors and their dependencies.

Abstract (sommario):
Business Process Management (BPM) has emerged as a popular management approach in both Information Technology (IT) and management practice. While there has been much research on business process modelling and the BPM life cycle, there has been little attention given to managing the quality of a business process during its life cycle. This study addresses this gap by providing a framework for organisations to manage the quality of business processes during different phases of the BPM life cycle. This study employs a multi-method research design which is based on the design science approach and the action research methodology. During the design science phase, the artifacts to model a quality-aware business process were developed. These artifacts were then evaluated through three cycles of action research which were conducted within three large Australian-based organisations. This study contributes to the body of BPM knowledge in a number of ways. Firstly, it presents a quality-aware BPM life cycle that provides a framework on how quality can be incorporated into a business process and subsequently managed during the BPM life cycle. Secondly, it provides a framework to capture and model quality requirements of a business process as a set of measurable elements that can be incorporated into the business process model. Finally, it proposes a novel root cause analysis technique for determining the causes of quality issues within business processes.

Abstract (sommario):
Process mining enables the analysis of event logs to gain actionable insights into an organisation’s operations. However, state-of-the-art process mining techniques do not exploit the natural decomposition characteristics of business processes. “Process stages” are a generic type of business process decomposition prevalent in multiple domains, e.g. the stages of loan processing, the support levels in IT helpdesk, or the clinical stages in patient treatment. This study contributes a novel approach to process mining based on process stages. The approach is grounded on four techniques that allow the mining of process stages, the automated discovery of process models, the mining of process performance and the multi-perspective comparison of process variants. The approach has been implemented in an open-source toolset and evaluated with real-life datasets from different domains.

Abstract (sommario):
Reporting patient states is considered an important part of care process monitoring in the hospital to efficiently monitor how well the health care system is performing. Monitoring care processes with enough fine-grained detail to precisely track wait states and service states in order to reduce wait times and improve their quality of care are challenging. Business Process Management (BPM) technology is used to bring care processes online, but there is no clear methodology on how to integrate performance management into BPM tools in a systematic matter that is effective, and minimizes complications and development costs. This thesis proposes a BPM methodology for care process monitoring that structures how to integrate performance monitoring into BPM. The major contribution of this thesis includes a generic methodology for care processes monitoring that describes how to structure and instrument a business process model for systematic care process monitoring which includes support for handoff points between organizations where many wait-time bottlenecks occur. It also includes a prototype implementation based on an existing case study based on a real cardiology care process from an Ontario hospital. Our results are evaluated using three different prototypes based on this same care process. The research methodology for the thesis is based on Design-Science research.

Abstract (sommario):
Business process models are an important source of information for the development of information systems. However, changes in the environment can a ect the way business processes are performed. In order to obtain models that re ect the changes it is necessary to continuously check between model and reality. Good business processes need to be up-to-date and automated to represent the organizational environment. Thus, it is of paramount importance to represent adequately variability in Business Process Models. Representing and con guring business processes variability for a speci c organization allows the proper execution of processes. In addition, dynamic environment calls for exible con guration processes that can meet stakeholders' goals. However, selecting a con guration for business process is a challenging activity. Even though current approaches allow the representation of variability of business process models, the selection of business variants in a given context remains a challenging issue. In this proposal, we advocate the use of Non-Functional Requirements (NFR) and context-awareness information to drive the con guration of process models at run-time. We propose a model-driven business process con- guration approach called Business process Variability Con guration with Contexts and NFRs (BVCCoN), approach that keeps the variability representation, con guration knowledge and contextual information separated from the business process models. We illustrate the BVCCoN model and process through examples. The evaluation of our proposal is based on a simulation assessment.

This thesis introduces AD-OPM BPI, which is a new method of conducting business process improvement using both Axiomatic Design and Object-Process Methodology. The premise underlying the method is that modern process improvement techniques boast large efficiency gains, but fail to address the broader process system. Through first using Axiomatic Design to map and optimize the process system, broader-inefficiencies will be addressed before they constrain individual processes. Then Object-Process Methodology is conducted for process-specific optimization by utilizing modern system architecture layering principles to identify nonvalue-adding entities and improve them through deletion or simplification. A case study at a large aerospace manufacturing company demonstrates the method in practical application. Results suggest that application is better suited to new or small-scale systems due to the challenge of applying Axiomatic Design to pre-existing large scale systems. Despite this limitation, Object-Process Methodology remains a viable option for business process improvement, whether or not it is coupled with Axiomatic Design in AD-OPM BPI.

Abstract (sommario):
Business process management experiences a large uptake by the industry, and process models play an important role in the analysis and improvement of processes. While an increasing number of staff becomes involved in actual modeling practice, it is crucial to assure model quality and homogeneity along with providing suitable aids for creating models. In this paper we consider the problem of offering recommendations to the user during the act of modeling. Our key contribution is a concept for defining and identifying so-called action patterns - chunks of actions often appearing together in business processes. In particular, we specify action patterns and demonstrate how they can be identified from existing process model repositories using association rule mining techniques. Action patterns can then be used to suggest additional actions for a process model. Our approach is challenged by applying it to the collection of process models from the SAP Reference Model.

Abstract (sommario):
This research develops, tests and refines an implementation model with the supporting toolkit to implement business process and IT systems within an existing manufacturing environment. The implementation model is based on the vehicle development process and the IT systems development process. A supporting toolkit has been developed by reviewing multiple areas of research and practice such as project management, quality management, systems engineering, behavioural studies, business process reengineering, people and cultural studies, as well as best practices within industry. This model and its corresponding toolkit has then been thoroughly tested and refined based on empirical research and experiences gained within 3 business cases, which took place within the BMW Group between 1996 and 2001. Due to the growth of joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions within the automotive sector the introduction on new business processes and IT systems represents a common problem within the automotive and other industries. Common business processes and IT systems within one automotive group enable the flexible use of manufacturing capacity and skilled workforce. Thus they represent the way to realise the synergy potential that often drives mergers and acquisitions. Within the business cases which are focused in this research, the introduction of new business processes and IT systems in the areas of engineering, sales and marketing, production, finance and process planning was carried out in parallel with the introduction of a new product. The challenges of such programmes are multiplied and the price of failure is tremendous. At the BMW Group the knowledge or model and toolkit of how to manage such a wide-ranging business change was not available when the first business case was initiated. Thus it had to be developed and documented on the run based on the lessons learnt. This research helped to enable and structure this process. Key recommendations for successful implementation are proposed. Critical people and cultural issues when implementing new business processes and IT systems are analysed and strategies for their resolution are proposed. With this research an overarching, holistic model on business process and IT systems implementation and the required toolkit is provided. Both theoretical research and practical experiences within an industrial context are linked due to the unique set-up of this research. This research set-up and the fact that the results were generated within the BMW Group facilitated the acceptance and the diffusion of the recommendations within the BMW Group. Principal parts of this model and its toolkit are now being used at the BMW Group on current business cases. The pre-study duration (Time-to-decision) and the duration of the implementation were halved. Future programmes will benefit from the results of this research.

Abstract (sommario):
Knowledge is an important resource, whose transfer is still not completely understood. The underlying belief of this thesis is that knowledge cannot be transferred directly from one person to another but must be converted for the transfer and therefore is subject to loss of knowledge and misunderstanding. This thesis proposes a new model for knowledge transfer and empirically evaluates this model. The model is based on the belief that knowledge must be encoded by the sender to transfer it to the receiver, who has to decode the message to obtain knowledge. To prepare for the model this thesis provides an overview about models for knowledge transfer and factors that influence knowledge transfer. The proposed theoretical model for knowledge transfer is implemented in a prototype to demonstrate its applicability. The model describes the influence of the four layers, namely code, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic layers, on the encoding and decoding of the message. The precise description of the influencing factors and the overlapping knowledge from sender and receiver facilitate its implementation. The application area of the layered model for knowledge transfer was chosen to be business process modelling. Business processes incorporate an important knowledge resource of an organisation as they describe the procedures for the production of products and services. The implementation in a software prototype allows a precise description of the process by adding semantic to the simple business process modelling language used. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge by providing a new model for knowledge transfer, which shows the process of knowledge transfer in greater detail and highlights influencing factors. The implementation in the area of business process modelling reveals the support provided by the model. An expert evaluation indicates that the implementation of the proposed model supports knowledge transfer in business process modelling. The results of the qualitative evaluation are supported by the findings of a qualitative evaluation, performed as a quasi-experiment with a pre-test/post-test design and two experimental groups and one control group. Mann-Whitney U tests indicated that the group that used the tool that implemented the layered model performed significantly better in terms of completeness (the degree of completeness achieved in the transfer) in comparison with the group that used a standard BPM tool (Z = 3.057, p = 0.002, r = 0.59) and the control group that used pen and paper (Z = 3.859, p < 0.001, r = 0.72). The experiment indicates that the implementation of the layered model supports the creation of a business process and facilitates a more precise representation.

Abstract (sommario):

by examining the level of the relationship between supplier selection and bpi practices, the present study contributes to the body of knowledge in both fields through identifying and examining the linkages between two topics based on a developed conceptual model, which explicates the interrelationships between supplier selection and bpi constructs, and providing the results of an empirical test of the model at different divisional levels of large firms operating in different industries in the london (united kingdom).
in general, the data support the proposed research model. the results of the study show that higher levels of quality, service, organization and relationship as well as lower levels of cycle time pertinent to the suppliers significantly contribute to the buyers' process improvement initiative and customer focus. additionally, relationship and cycle time have more relations to improvement initiative and organization and cycle time have more impacts on customer focus than other supplier selection constructs.
we begin by reviewing the relevant literature and developing the conceptual research model. we describe key supplier selection and bpi constructs, elaborate on the interrelationships among these variables and pose a series of testable hypotheses regarding the linkages between supplier selection and bpi constructs. next, we discuss methodological issues related to developing and validating the measures of constructs as well as data collection and analysis procedures. thereafter, we present and discuss the results of our substantive tests that involve linear regression models. we conclude by considering the implications for both research and practice and provide recommendations for broadening the scope of future research of supplier selection and bpi.

Abstract (sommario):
Business processes are fundamental to the operations of a company. Each product manufactured and every service provided is the result of a series of actions that constitute a business process. Business process management is an organizational principle that makes the processes of a company explicit and offers capabilities to implement procedures, control their execution, analyze their performance, and improve them. Therefore, business processes are documented as process models that capture these actions and their execution ordering, and make them accessible to stakeholders. As these models are an essential knowledge asset, they need to be managed effectively. In particular, the discovery and reuse of existing knowledge becomes challenging in the light of companies maintaining hundreds and thousands of process models. In practice, searching process models has been solved only superficially by means of free-text search of process names and their descriptions. Scientific contributions are limited in their scope, as they either present measures for process similarity or elaborate on query languages to search for particular aspects. However, they fall short in addressing efficient search, the presentation of search results, and the support to reuse discovered models. This thesis presents a novel search method, where a query is expressed by an exemplary business process model that describes the behavior of a possible answer. This method builds upon a formal framework that captures and compares the behavior of process models by the execution ordering of actions. The framework contributes a conceptual notion of behavioral distance that quantifies commonalities and differences of a pair of process models, and enables process model search. Based on behavioral distances, a set of measures is proposed that evaluate the quality of a particular search result to guide the user in assessing the returned matches. A projection of behavioral aspects to a process model enables highlighting relevant fragments that led to a match and facilitates its reuse. The thesis further elaborates on two search techniques that provide concrete behavioral distance functions as an instantiation of the formal framework. Querying enables search with a notion of behavioral inclusion with regard to the query. In contrast, similarity search obtains process models that are similar to a query, even if the query is not precisely matched. For both techniques, indexes are presented that enable efficient search. Methods to evaluate the quality and performance of process model search are introduced and applied to the techniques of this thesis. They show good results with regard to human assessment and scalability in a practical setting.

Abstract (sommario):
Whatever uncertainties and complexities the future might hold, companies will be faced with a dynamic environment and will have to cope with the resulting challenges through strategy management. The objective of work presented in this thesis is to develop a better understanding of the effect of a business process based approach to strategy management. This understanding adopts a business process perspective and extends the design view to integrate financial and operational performance measures by embracing the organisation as the unit of analysis. The work presented in this research, following an in-depth review of literature, developed a set of requirements for a Dynamic Strategy Management Process. These requirements suggest that strategy management is viewed as a business process. The research continued by critically evaluating the existing strategy management frameworks, models, methodologies, tools and techniques, which have been classified according to their scope. This rev iew concluded that although approaches reviewed collectively met all the requirements, individually none of the approaches fulfilled all of these requirements. Hence, to fulfil these requirements, PROPHESY (Process Oriented Performance Headed Strategy) was developed which is documented in detail in a workbook format. PROPHESY process was tested using two alternative approaches: The broad approach was conducted using a structured and close-ended questionnaire as well as holding workshops with a total of forty managers. Narrow approach was conducted through implementation of the PROPHESY in case studies with four manufacturing companies. All feedback from these participants was used as a basis for improving the process. The research concludes with interesting observations on the positive impact of business process based strategy management approach. It also concludes that operations strategy should focus on creating value that is independent for each business unit. This means developing horizontal strategies that have objectives of coordinating business processes and developing objectives that encourage the sharing of resources and skills.

The improvement of business processes is considered important to support companies competitiveness and sustainability, therefore, being highlighted in the academic community. In this way, the improvement of the organizational processes can be achieved through the business processes redesign, which is considered the most value-added phase in a business process management (BPM) project. However, despite the existence of an extensive literature on the subject of business processes redesign, methodologies or structured procedures that aim to understand the transformation from the as-is to the desired to-be processes are still scarce. Within this context, in order to fill this gap in the literature, this study presents the empirical findings and the lessons learnt from an action research with the objective of redesigning the logistic processes of a cultural production enterprise. The empirical study lasted nine months. A synthesis conceptual model for redesigning organizational business processes was proposed based on the literature. This model incorporated three tiers (i.e., organization, business processes and implementation) and provided guidance for conducting the empirical study. Different critical success factors and barriers have been identified and analyzed with a focus on organizational, social, and technical dimensions, resulting in contributions to scholars and to practitioners in redesigning business process approaches.
