Abstract (sommario):
In this research, a contrastive linguistic analysis of German and Brazilian package inserts was developed. The main aim of this analysis was to identify the degree of comprehensibility in each text, according to the Karlsruhe model dimensions: concision, correctness, motivation, structure, simplicity and perceptibility. To achieve this aim, it was necessary to review some concepts of the Textual Linguistics and procedures of the Contrastive Textology, such as the definitions of text and textual genre, the method of comparing parallel texts and the establishment of a point of comparison. In general, the results of the contrastive analysis have shown that technical terms (in the scope of simplicity) and small font (perceptibility) are not the main causes of misunderstanding of package inserts, as it was supposed initially. The study has highlighted that deviances in the structure and in the concision of package inserts may have an impact in the comprehension of these texts as negative as the aspects forementioned, if not more. Moreover, it was possible to notice that each dimension has a different weight in the comprehensibility of the analyzed package inserts because of the linguistic and cultural differences between German/Portuguese and Germany/Brazil.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examines Okudzhava’s depiction of the process of documentalization of the past as a defining feature of the novel Puteshestvie diletantov, giving reason to consider it a form of metahistory, or an artistic statement on the subject of historical knowledge. The image of the document plays a central role in the novel Puteshestvie diletantov. Through it, Okudzhava depicts the process of knowing and (re)creating the past, as well as the process of its deformation, supplementation and modification. In the form of a document, the past finds existence in time and space, finds its author and addressee, and becomes submerged in a constantly changing context. Okudzhava does not contest the truth of the past, but rather problematizes it, immersing the reader in its real element – the narrative one, permeated by the creative will of the individual. Within this element, two juxtaposed narrative streams stand out clearly: the fictional and the documentary, each shaping the picture of the past in different ways. By thematicizing the issue of documents as evidence, Okudzhava at the same time thematicizes the influence of narrativity on the process of our recreation of past events, as well as on the course of these same events. The act of compiling a document and the act of narration appear in the novel as the driving force of the action and are treated by the author of Puteshestvie diletantov as a fully fledged manifestation of human will in History. In this way, the metafictionality of the novel (its thematicization and problematization of various narrative forms) becomes the key to its metahistoricality (the thematicization and problematization of knowledge of the past, the composition of History), inasmuch as History itself is represented here in the form of a narrative stream.

Truant, Laurie Gail. "Recovery from bulimia nervosa". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31151.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Current research on formal treatment approaches to normal-weight bulimia presents inconclusive results on the efficacy of various treatments and limited empirical knowledge of the curative mechanisms involved. In the literature on therapeutic change agent studies which interviews individuals who have recovered from an eating disorder, only isolated aspects of the recovery experience are uncovered so that the meaning and process of recovery are limited. This case study applied Colaizzi's (1978) existential-phenomenological approach to elucidate thematic categories underlying the recovery experience as recounted by a former bulimic in order to provide a more complete and holistic understanding of the process and nature of recovery from bulimia. Initially, four individuals who self-reported feeling genuinely recovered from bulimia were prescreened by an independent rater in order to ensure that they had a previous diagnosis of bulimia nervosa as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition Revised (1987) and no previous history of anorexia nervosa, that they were free of bulimic symptoms, and that they exhibited no significant indicators of other active psychological problems since having recovered from bulimia. The four co-researchers described their recovery experience and each interview was transcribed. Categorical themes were formulated from the richest and most comprehensive transcript and information from another co-researcher's transcript served to cross-validate the categories. The remaining two transcripts were not included in the analysis process. The co-researcher validated the thematic categories and their descriptions and also verified that the clustered categories clearly outlined the pattern or meaning of her recovery experience. Results showed that recovery involves a synergetic interaction of curative factors both inside and outside of formal therapy. Once the individual acknowledges her eating problem, her bulimic behaviours begin to decrease as she experiences an increasing sense of efficacy and self-respect in areas of her life other than her body weight and shape. Her bingeing and purging gradually diminish to the point where she no longer engages in them. Aside from an occasional lapse, she now implements other activities to deal with uncomfortable emotional states. She feels stronger in knowing who she is, she cherishes herself as she is, and she is eager to affirm her personal growth by sharing her experience with recovering bulimics. In addition to a more comprehensive theoretical understanding of recovery, this study provided a deepened appreciation of the complexity of the recovery process. It also underscored the need for a multifaceted and individualized treatment approach which is adjusted throughout the recovery process as the adaptive functions or meanings of clients' eating behaviours change.

Schachtel, Bernard 1943. "Bulimia: a Phenomenological Approach". Thesis, North Texas State University, 1988. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331020/.

Abstract (sommario):
This study used a qualitative/phenomenological research methodology to examine the perspective of five bulimic subjects about their lives in order to understand the bulimic individual's point of view and develop a clearer picture of the world of the bulimic. This approach involved three interviews for each of the five subjects totalling 22 1/2 hours. The three interviews dealt with the subjects' past and present experiences and their ideas about the future. The qualitative/phenomenological methodology created an in-depth view of each subject's relationship to the beginning of her bulimia and its subsequent development. During the period when the interviews were being transcribed, patterns and concepts emerged and were examined. Nine categories were developed from this data reflecting some of the characteristics of a bulimic's personality. Six research questions were formulated and then answered by evaluating them in the light of the nine categories as well as data and descriptions from the interviews. No one single category was found to be uniquely dominant, but rather the categories tended to appear in a cluster-like fashion depending on the individual personality of the bulimic. The data of this study revealed a distinction between the personality and the behavior of the bulimic. A form with a Likert-like response was developed by the researcher and given out to 11 raters in order to evaluate the presence or non-presence of the categories in selected passages. On the basis of the findings of this study, with its limited subject pool, certain recommendations are presented for the reader that might perhaps be of some use in understanding bulimia.

Abstract (sommario):
This study hypothesized body weight and eating patterns to be important discriminators of psychological characteristics among eating disordered groups. A total of 146 bulimic and non-bulimic women from underweight (anorexic), normal weight, and overweight (obese) categories were examined. Based upon the theoretical and research literature reviewed, this study hypothesized locus of control, personal potency, self-esteem, and psychopathology to be central psychological characteristics in anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and obesity. These variables were measured by Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, the Semantic Differential Potency Scale, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, respectively. The relative importance of these variables in the disorders was also addressed. Results showed women in the eating disordered groups examined to demonstrate the following psychological characteristics: (1) Non-bulimic anorexics--an external locus of control, low self-esteem, and hysteria; (2) Bulimic anorexics--the greatest external locus of control, the lowest self-esteem, psychopathic deviance, hysteria, thought disorder, depression, a preoccupation with somatic concerns, and hypofemininity; (3) Normal weight bulimics--an external locus of control, low self-esteem, psychopathic deviance, hysteria, thought disorder, and depression; (4) Non-bulimic obese--low self-esteem; and (5) Bulimic obese--low self-esteem, an external locus of control, thought disorder and depression. The primary conclusion drawn from this study is that bulimia is a better predictor of the psychological characteristics than body weight. Bulimia, across all weight categories, was associated with an external locus of control, low self-esteem, psychopathic deviance, hysteria, thought disorder, and depression. That there was little variability in personality characteristics associated with bulimia across weight categories emphasized the stability of the symptom constellation associated with this disorder. This study supported the view of the normal weight bulimic as psychologically similar to the bulimic anorexic. This study also supported the stance that simple obesity does not represent a unitary psychological disorder.

This is a cross-sectional study whose objectives are to investigate the occurrence of possible eating disorders, anorexia and/or bulimia in adolescents of both sexes, and to identify the epidemiologic profile of both. To identify eating disorders, 500 adolescents from a private school in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, completed self-report questionnaires, the BITE (Bulimic Investigatory Test Edinburgh) and the EAT-26 (Eating Attitudes Test summarized). The findings indicate that 70 (14%) adolescents possibly present with diagnoses of anorexia, 4 (0,8%) of bulimia, and 11(2,2%) with anorexia and bulimia combined. It was observed that 78 (15,6%) adolescents presented with non-usual eating habits, placing them at risk for the development of eating disorders. This investigation shows that there is a high occurrence of possible eating disorders in the sample studied and a heterogeneous epidemiologic profile, occurring in both sexes and within diverse ethnic groups and social-economic classes. The dissatisfaction with their own bodies and the wish to modify them are feelings present in adolescents who probably exhibit eating disorders (p<0.001).

Abstract (sommario):

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study compared cognitive test performance between matched controls and participants with anorexia (N=30) and bulimia (N=30). The results revealed that both of the eating disorder groups demonstrated a considerable number of neuropsychological deficits. However, between-group significance was not established and the deficits were accounted for by a small subgroup of poorer test performers. On analysing group results on a wide range of cognitive tests, both clinical groups performed more poorly than controls on attentional, learning and visuo-spatial/constructional tasks. There was however, no evidence of executive difficulties in either group. On partialling-out the effects of anxiety and depression, between-group significance was removed on a considerable proportion of the test results. However, significance remained for the anorexia group on a digit coding task, two auditory-verbal learning tests, a measure of incidental visual learning and a measure of visuo-spatial/constructional functioning. These results suggested mild difficulties in cognitive functioning across neuropsychological domains which were not fully explained by the influence of emotional and other psychological factors. In the bulimia group, significance remained on a digit coding task and an omnibus attentional measure together with two dependent measures of auditory-verbal learning. There was also a trend for poorer performance on tests of visuo-spatial/constructional functioning. However, the results were largely accountable by the effects of emotional variables on attentional processes. The results of cognitive test performance in anorexia and bulimia were discussed with reference to previous studies and with reference to clinical practice.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Previous researchers have proposed that Multi-impulsive Bulimia (MIB), a constellation of self-destructive impulsive behaviours including theft, self-harm, suicide attempts, sexual disinhibition, and substance use, may be a distinct sub-type of Bulimia Nervosa (BN). Prior to this study, the validity of MIB as a subtype of BN had not been empirically examined. In the current study, taxometric procedures were used to address the question of whether MIB represents a distinct subtype or occurs on one or more continua. Participants were women (N = 419) diagnosed with BN seeking treatment at a residential eating disorders facility. Taxometric procedures used were mean above below minus a cut, maximum covariance, and latent mode analyses. Indicators were bulimic behaviours (bingeing and purging), theft, suicide attempts, self-harm and alcohol use. Analyses included comparisons with simulated taxonic and dimensional data. Results were inconsistent across analyses, perhaps due to problems with indicator validity. However there was some evidence of taxonicity.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis focuses on the question 'what is bulimia?' A purposive sample of thirteen mature bulimic women were accessed via local newspapers. Multiple, in depth, nondirective interviews were carried out following a narrative story-telling approach. The women all told stories of how their bulimia started with a set of behaviours that provided a logical solution to a problem; the need to maintain control over body weight and shape in keeping with perceived norms of society. Following this they soon came to experience a sense of shame generated by a social gaze that views over-eating as indicative of a lack of personal control, and purging as disgusting. Their response was to maintain secrecy and attempt to find out more about bulimia. A social constructionist approach gave insights into the complex meaning-making processes that the women engage with. Popular material found in the public domain, constructed by health 'experts', functions to make up the dominant discourses of bulimia. Poststructuralist analyses focused on the relations of power and knowledge which allow certain powerful groups access to promote versions of 'bulimia' as truths. Foucault's poststructural approach goes beyond social constructionism by suggesting that discourse constitutes the individual and actually produces the 'bulimic'. Poststructural feminist perspectives, along with Foucault's concept of disciplinary power, provides understandings into how the female body as 'slim and beautiful' is used as a means by which women are regulated within Western societies. The dominant conceptualisation of bulimia as a condition that adolescent women predominantly suffer functioned to increase the shame that mature women experienced. Consequently, the analysis located narratives of resistance which involved rejections of dominant discourses. These resistant narratives challenge the notion of irrationality and uncontrollability that constructs both 'bulimia' and 'woman/femininity'. This in tum functions to challenge the shame and secrecy that surrounds 'bulimia'. These unique insights suggest that any definition of 'bulimia' is dependent upon the angle at which the 'lens' is focused or upon which the 'gaze' is fixed. There is not one, but many definitions of 'bulimia' that contradict, compete with and constrain each other. 'Bulimia' has been shown to be a multiple, fluid, and ever-changing phenomenon.

Abstract (sommario):
Based on the problematization of the concept of eating disorders, this paper aims on the investigation of our relation with the body, discussing the normative practices that constitute our ways of life. From an esthetic standard that relates the body with the beauty and success, we intend to problematize the social context where the eating disorders have been produced. To achieve this objective, we base our study on the anorexia and bulimia analysis. The symptoms of this psychopathology of difficult treatment reflect an excessive worry about the weight, corporal image and of getting fatter. Our interest is to contribute to this discussion, leaving from an individual perspective focused on the anorectic and/or bulimic young and the dysfunctional interactions of his/her familiar system, shifting the focus to the eating disorders as a device that denunciates the extremism in the way of thinking, feeling and experiencing the body in our society. Therefore, our objective is to present some subsidies that allow us to dislocate this matter from the exclusive scope of individual experience to an analysis of the social practices of the relation with the body that resides the contemporary experience, considering the eating disorders in the present as the exacerbation of a social symptom.

Abstract (sommario):
A questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of 771 undergraduate women at Virginia Tech. The research instrument was designed to accurately estimate the frequency of bulimia among university women. Bulimia was operationalized in specific behavioral terms that extend the DSM-III definition. The response rate for the mail survey was 87%, with 669 surveys used in the descriptive data analysis. One hundred and twelve subjects, 17% of the total sample, were classified as bulimic. The bulimic subjects were matched on height, weight, and age with 112 women without an eating disorder. This subset of 224 subjects was analyzed in order to assess the degree to which the respondent's family system, use of coping strategies, and weight preoccupation are predictive of bulimia. Multiple regression analysis indicated that 28% of the variance in bulimia can be explained by these three variables. The survey findings and implications for future research are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Although several writers have emphasized the habit-like characteristics of bulimia nervosa, no study has investigated the extent to which bulimia responds to treatment specifically for habit disorders. Habit reversal is a general treatment plan which teaches individuals to regain lost awareness of all aspects of a habit. The habit is then interrupted at the earliest movement in the chain by a physically competing response. Habit reversal (Azrin & Nunn, 1973) has been effective in treating other habits (e.g., stuttering, tics, bruxism). In the present study, habit reversal was adapted for the treatment of bulimia. In response to newspaper advertisements, ten females (aged 21-26) with a minimum of two binges/week were included in the study. Bingeing and vomiting ranged from .5/day to 3.57/day during baseline; duration of the disorder ranged from one to eight years. In a multiple-baseline, across-subjects design, subjects were randomly assigned to begin treatment following 14 days of baseline data collection. Subjects self-monitored and reported daily binge eating, vomiting, fasting and laxative use. Daily social contacts and athletic activities were self-monitored and reported as secondary dependent measures. A blood chemistry analysis to assess metabolic functioning, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90R) were administered pre- and post-treatment. Two subjects reported cessation of bulimic episodes during baseline data collection apparently as a result of self-monitoring and frequent phone contacts. A rapid and substantial reduction in the target behaviors for the subjects who received treatment was reported following presentation of habit reversal (mean bingeing reduction=66.7%; mean vomiting reduction=52.0%). As reports of bingeing and vomiting decreased, concomitant increase in reported social contacts and athletic activities was observed in five of seven subjects without treatment for social behavior. Scores on the BDI and SCL-90 R did not change as a function of treatment. However, the self-reported frequency of binge eating during treatment correlated positively with psychopathology (r=.95, p

Abstract (sommario):
Based on psychodynamic and object relations theories, 17 variables were proposed to be salient for those suffering from bulimia. In the present study four groups were compared: (a) bulimics with a prior history of anorectic-like behavior (FAB); (b) bulimics without a prior history of anorectic-like behavior (NAB); (c) a nonobese, nonbulimic group who evidenced excessive concerns about their weight (CAW); and (d) a normal control group (Control). Differences were predicted between both the bulimic and control groups as well as between both bulimic groups (FAB and NAB). Seventy-five women between the ages of 18 and 35 completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the Eating Disorders Inventory, and Levenson's Locus of Control Scale. Results of a multivariate analysis of covariance procedure revealed differences across the groups on 12 variables. Post hoc testing indicated that both bulimic groups differed from the control groups confirming the first hypothesis. Further, the bulimic groups were differentiated from each other in the predicted direction on 10 of the 12 variables, lending support for the second hypothesis. Overall, the results suggest a progression of psychopathology and clinical symptomatology. In order of decreasing psychopathology were the following groups: FAB, NAB, CAW, and Control groups. Also, a discriminant analysis procedure identified 11 variables which successfully differentiated among the FAB, NAB and nonbulimic groups. It was concluded that within the syndrome of bulimia a prior history of anorectic-like behavior was related to increased psychopathology and clinical symptomatology. A clear distinction between the syndrome of bulimia and occasional instances of bulimic behavior was also indicated. Lastly, results of this study seemed to rule out excessive concerns about weight as a factor related specifically to the bulimic syndrome. Limitations and alternative explanations for the results are discussed and suggestions for further research are put forth.

This is an ethnographic approach to the recent process by which musicians in Bogotá are appropriating bullerengue, a musical genre commonly referred to as "afro traditional music", an aspect that was reason enough for it to be rejected until recently. The present work, which is part of an Anthropology of music, based on the idea that musical processes offer information about other phenomena of society, exposes how such an appropriation process is mediated by what they refer to as a "search for roots", by male - female tensions and by the search of its therapeutic effects.

Abstract (sommario):
Research interest of the role that childhood anxiety plays in the predisposition of eating disorder pathology has facilitated investigation into the antecendents of this anxiety within the framework of Bowlby's (1969, 1973, 1980) attachment theory and its inherent concept of internal working models. Parallel findings within the literature on Bulimia Nervosa and insecure attachment, in terms of difficulties with affect regulation and autonomy focused behaviour, lead to the hypothesis that anxiety within close adult relationships will be positively related to bulimia. Research to date investigating attachment processes in eating disordered samples has typically focused on attachment in relation to parent-child relationships, overlooking the impact adult love relationships has on attachment. The present study investigates the links between adult attachment styles within close relationships, bulimia, dietary restraint, and relationship satisfaction. 120 female participants aged between 18 to 45 years were recruited from the University of Canterbury campus, and administered three to four brief questionnaires pertaining to the study. Results found that women with bulimia who were currently involved in romantic relationships were significantly more anxiously attached, more likely to engage in dieting behaviour and report low levels of satisfaction within their relationships. Multiple regression analyses further supported the significant independent contributions that attachment, dieting and relationship satisfaction constructs had on bulimia. Furthermore, a mediational model was supported, whereby securely attached women were more satisfied with their relationships, which in turn was related to lower levels of bulimia. The effect that secure attachment had on bulimia was not direct, but a function of relationship satisfaction within adult love relationships. The findings of this study extend results from previous research concerning anxious attachment and bulimia, into the realm of adult love relationships. Further research investigation of attachment styles within adult love relationships, in terms of specific cognitive processing and types of symptom expression within the eating disordered population, represents a productive avenue for future research.

Dobmeyer, Anne C. "Factor Structure of the Anorexia Bulimia Inventory". DigitalCommons@USU, 1997. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/6100.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Anorexia Bulimia Inventory, a recently developed self-report questionnaire for the assessment of eating disorders, addresses two major limitations found in existing self-report eating disorder inventories. First, it comprehensively assesses the diagnostic symptoms of both bulimia and anorexia nervosa; and second, it assesses the frequently cooccurring problem areas (e.g., depression, anergia) that may be targeted in treatment planning for eating disorders. Although initial research on the psychometrics of the instrument appears promising, no research has yet investigated its factor structure. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to investigate the factor structure of the Anorexia Bulimia Inventory. Principal axis factor analysis with a varimax rotation was used on a combined clinical and nonclinical sample. The overall sample (N = 1,675) was randomly divided to provide a replication of the factor analysis. Using the two separate samples and the combined, total sample, one seven-factor solution and two eight-factor solutions emerged. All factors met conventional standards for internal consistency, with the exception of one factor consisting of only three items. The results of this study suggest that the factor structure of the Anorexia Bulimia Inventory closely parallels the intuitively designed subscales. All nine subscales emerged as separate, interpretable factors in at least one sample. Four subscales were clearly corroborated by the factor analysis, suggesting that these factors represent stable constructs that are relevant to populations at-risk for the development of eating disorders. The factor analyses provided moderate corroboration of four other subscales. Although these four factors did show deviations across samples, they all emerged as interpretable factors, suggesting that the constructs likely reflect some of the prominent ideational and behavioral issues relevant to at-risk populations. Finally, one subscale emerged as an interpretable factor in only one sample. This failure to replicate across samples may reflect problems in the wording or choice of items included on the subscale, or it could indicate that these issues are less relevant for at-risk populations. The results of this study, together with the existing evidence of the measure's psychometric properties, support the use of the Anorexia Bulimia Inventory in the assessment of eating disorders.

Abstract (sommario):
The series of studies reported in this thesis aimed to improve our knowledge of the cognitive disturbance in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Techniques from experimental cognitive psychology were used to test predictions made by cognitive theories of eating disorders. In the first study, subjects performed three tasks related to eating, weight and shape and self-statements were measured using concurrent verbalisation and a selfreport questionnaire. Compared to dieters and non-dieting controls, patients with bulimia nervosa showed greater concern with weight and appearance while patients with anorexia nervosa showed greater concern with eating. In the second study, using an adaptation of the Stroop colour-naming task, patients with eating disorders showed greater selective processing of information related to eating, weight and shape than normal, non-dieting controls and normal dieters. In the third study it was found that this disturbance was more closely related to measures of the specific psychopathology of eating disorders rather than to measures of general psychopathology. In the fourth study information processing before and after treatment was compared. As predicted by cognitive theories, selective processing appeared to be related to the emotional salience of the clour-named words rather than to patients' familiarity with the issues represented by these words. In the fifth study information processing before and after three different psychological treatments for bulimia nervosa was measured. No support was found for the hypothesis that cognitive behaviour therapy operates through mechanisms specific to this treatment. Contrary to predictions, in the sixth study, when colour-naming was measured at the end of treatment and at 12 month follow-up, selective information processing did not predict relapse in symptoms of bulimia nervosa. Finally, a seventh study, which manipulated attitudes to eating, weight and shape experimentally, found evidence for a causal relationship between these attitudes and disturbed eating behaviour. Methodological issues, and the clinical and theoretical relevance of the research findings, are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis advisor: Barbara E. Wolfe
The core defining features of bulimia nervosa (BN) are repeated binge eating episodes and compensatory purging behavior. The biobehavioral aspects of binge eating are complex and not fully understood. One area of recent interest is the role of the satiety-signaling peptide cholecystokinin (CCK). Previous research observed a blunted postprandial plasma CCK response in those with BN, therefore suggesting this may be a cause, consequence, or maintenance factor in binge eating. It is unknown whether this altered response is due to a state versus trait phenomenon, thus having implications in the development of clinical treatment strategies. To examine the nature of this altered response, this study assessed whether CCK normalizes following remission from BN (RBN). This biobehavioral study utilized a comparative design to prospectively evaluate the biological CCK response and the corresponding behavioral ratings of satiety and other eating-related sensations in individuals with BN (n=10), RBN (n =14), and healthy controls (CON, n=13). CCK and behavioral ratings were assessed at baseline, +15, +30, and +60 minutes following the ingestion of a standardized liquid test meal. The BN group's CCK response was blunted and approached significance (p =.052) when compared to the RBN and CON groups. As predicted the RBN and CON groups' CCK response did not significantly differ. This finding supports the premise that CCK may normalize following abstinence from binge and purge (vomit) episodes and that this is a state versus trait related phenomenon. A significant positive relationship between CCK response and ratings of satiety occurred in the RBN group only (r=.59, p<.05). A new and unanticipated finding in the BN group was a significant relationship (r=.86, p < .01, two-tailed) between their CCK response and urge to vomit. A greater urge to vomit was reported by those individuals who had increased CCK response. Therefore, it is unknown whether the normalization of CCK functioning is a protective or liability factor in the stabilization and recovery process. Replication studies utilizing a larger sample size are needed to understand the role of CCK in recovery and the subsequent development of novel treatment strategies for those suffering with BN

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Bulimia nervosa is characterized by periods of binge eating combined with vomiting, using of laxatives or obsessive exercise. Patients choose not to get help because of shame and guilt and also a fear of change. Psychological treatments used for bulimia nervosa is primarily cognitive behavior therapy in different ways. As a nurse it is important to meet patients with sensitivity and empathy. Objective: The purpose was to illustrate patients with bulimia nervosas experiences of psychological treatments. Method: This study is an general literature study where ten scientific articles was collected and processed. Results: The collected articles resulted in three categories; trust, motivation and learning. Trust to those who held in those psychological treatments was important in order to open up about their illness. Patients experienced both improved motivation to make a change and some patients experienced worsen motivation to make a change. The psychological treatments gave patients the tools they needed to handle their illness. Conclusion: For the patients with bulimia nervosa it was important to feel trust to get motivated to the treatment and to be able to handle their illness and to move on with the recovery. It´s important for the nurse to be there for the patient.

Abstract (sommario):
Eating-disorder clients show low motivation, poor follow-through, and inordinate premature dropout rates in treatment. To date, little research has been conducted that might provide clinicians with an understanding of the critical factors that may aid clients' recovery. Such factors may be used by clinicians to better motivate clients to collaborate in treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify some of the critical factors that women with eating disorders believed were crucial in prompting or facilitating their recovery. Identification of these factors was accomplished through a systematic content analysis of semistructured interviews with recovered or recovering bulimics and anorexics. This study may contribute significantly to future research into the development of motivational supplements to eating disorder therapy ( e.g., psychoeducational materials or therapy orientation programs). Of interest were what personal, interpersonal, or environmental factors anorexic and bulimic clients reported increased their motivation to recover, and prompted them to begin the recovery process, maintain recovery, and cope with the threat of relapse. Also, factors that subjects reported hindered their progress in recovery were examined. The anorexic and bulimic subjects reported social support as a critical factor across three stages of recovery, including beginning recovery, maintaining recovery, and coping with relapse. Being "tired" of the disorder and therapy were indicated to be relevant to beginning recovery. Improved self-esteem was deemed significant in helping subjects both maintain recovery and cope with the threat of relapse. Establishing healthy eating habits and attitudes was a necessary factor required to maintain recovery. Subjects shared that developing healthy ways to deal with emotions enabled them to deal successfully with the threat of relapse. Anorexic subjects reported that people and societal expectations, fear of becoming fat, incentive to numb emotions, and poor eating habits and attitudes impeded their recovery. Bulimic subjects indicated that people and societal expectations, incentive to numb emotions, lack of understanding, and poor eating habits and attitudes hindered their recovery.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the following study was to examine why some individuals who have been affected by eating disorders choose to write blogs and how they feel about this experience. The group of respondents consisted of five women aged 23-35, who currently write blogs about their eating disorders. A qualitative method was utilized by means of semi-structured interviews conducted over the telephone and then analyzed using sense of coherence and coping theory. The results showed that the main reasons to start a blog were seeing it as an outlet to vent emotions, a way to help others suffering from eating disorders and a means to communicate about problems without having to do so face to face. Furthermore the blog was viewed as a positive resource to deal with eating disorders and as a way of gaining social support. Blogging can thus be viewed as a coping tool and as a way to increase comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness according to the sense of coherence.

Abstract (sommario):
Eating disorders are a disease group that is becoming more common in society. One of the reasons that the disease is increasing is the unrealistic ideal that is presented in media. The media-pressure is substantial and accessible. The beauty ideal involve a dissatisfaction of a persons own body and his or hers appearance that will contribute to the drive of change. The purpose of this study is to investigate if men, as well as women, are influenced by the media-factor in the sicken of an eating disorder. Also if the sex matters and plays a certain role for those who suffer. Only 10 percent of those who are suffering from an eating disorder and that seeks help are men. Can the ideal have an direct affect that less men suffer from this disease? Or can the different expectations of the sexes and of the disease implicate that men don´t realize that they are sick, or that they feel shameful to seek help because eating disorders are known to be a women’s disease? The results implicate that eating disorders is a complex disease and that the media-factor alone does not contribute to sicken or the cause of sickness.
