AbstractThis paper is a review of the scholarly conversation relating Buddhism to environmental issues, primarily in the United States. Topics of particular concern include important scholarly benchmarks in the field, and the nature of Buddhist ethics. Also considered are the relationships between Buddhism and other schools of thought that have been important in thinking about nature and the environment. In particular I focus on Deep Ecology and related philosophies, Buddhism and Christianity in Process thought, and the relationship between Buddhism and the natural sciences. I outline current practices performed worldwide by people who self-identify as Buddhists that clearly demonstrate environmental consciousness, sometimes actively participating in environmental movements in efforts to resist globalization and, often, Westernization. In the end, this survey perspective illustrates that there is no monolithic Buddhist tradition, but rather a substantial number of adapted (and adapting) Buddhisms.

The article reveals the concept of “two Buddhisms”, which distinguishes two key categories among Buddhist communities in the West: “ethnic”, represented by immigrants from Asian Buddhist countries and their descendants, and “converts”, or adherents of Western origin. This division into Asian and non-Asian Buddhists is often described as one of the main features of Buddhism in the West.The author concludes that the existing concept in its current form is outdated and requires revision and updating. However, the recognition of such approach as “outdated” in the research of modern Buddhism in Western countries is akin to the recognition of the “outdated” real picture of Buddhism in the West, which even in its modernity demonstrates two different approaches to the implementation of Buddhist teachings. This attitude also leads to the loss of high-quality scientific tools in theoretical and methodological aspects.

This study analyzes the records related to Buddhism in Ibn al-Nadīm's al-Fihrist and examines how Muslims in the 10th century perceived Buddhism. Al-Fihrist is a list of Arabic literature, consisting of a total of ten chapters(maqāla) and Ibn al-Nadīm recorded what he had seen and heard about Buddhism in Chapter nine. He described the character of Buddhists positively. However, he used the two terms for Buddha and Bodhisattva without distinction. He also introduced several claims about the Buddha's religious status, but did not clearly state his position on the Buddha from the Islamic perspective. Although his record mentions existence of many Buddhas, it lacks doctrinal explanation on the concept of multiple Buddhas. Also, Buddhists’ customs and statues of Buddha are described in relatively detail, but there are some parts that are confused with Hindu culture. Therefore, it seems that Muslims at that time showed some interest in external aspects of Buddhism such as Buddhist character, customs, and statues, but lacked a doctrinal understanding of Buddhism.

At the turn of the nineteenth century, Madras became home to a movement that anticipated Ambedkar’s turn to Buddhism by nearly half a century. Founded in 1898, the Sakya Buddhist Society was led by Iyothee Thass (1845–1914) and became the first Dalit Buddhist revival of its kind in late colonial India. In this article, I explore the global dimensions of Sakya Buddhism through an intertextual reading of its journal, Oru Paica Tamilan, and the work of Asian Buddhists like Henry Olcott and Anagarika Dharmapala who were associated with the movement. I argue that Sakya Buddhism’s historical imaginaire of Dalits as indigenous Buddhists intersected with the political concerns that drove Asian Buddhist revivalist movements in important ways. I also show that the movement created a distinctly Tamil tradition of Buddhism for Dalits and attempted to reorient them towards the broader Buddhist world even as they had a notionally marginal presence within this landscape. In doing so, I propose the category of ‘pararegional’ as a way of thinking about seemingly uneven or unidirectional interactions between different spatial scales such as ‘global’ and ‘regional'.

Whatever happened to “Engaged Buddhism”? Twenty years after a flurry of publication placing this global movement firmly on the map, enthusiasm for the term itself appears to have evaporated. I attempt to reconstruct what happened: scholars turned away from the concept for its reproducing colonialist understandings of traditional Buddhism as essentially world-rejecting, and they developed alternate discourses for describing Buddhist actors’ multifarious social and political engagements, especially in contemporary Asia. I describe the specific rise and fall of the term in Anglophone scholarship, in order for scholars to better grasp the evolution of contemporary Western, Anglophone Buddhisms, to better understand what Buddhists in Asia are in fact doing with the term, and to better think through what it might mean politically for us as scholars to deploy the term at all. In particular, I identify “Academic Engaged Buddhism” (1988–2009) as one hegemonic form of Engaged Buddhism, a Western Buddhist practitioner-facing anthological project of Euro-American scholars with potentially powerful but unevenly distributed effects on Buddhist thought and practice around the world.

During fieldwork in Ladakh in July–August 2018, three authors from Asian studies, anthropology, and religious studies backgrounds researched “multiple Buddhisms” in Ladakh, India. Two case studies are presented: a Buddhist monastery festival by the Drikung Kagyü Tibetan Buddhist sect, and a Theravada monastic complex, called Mahabodhi International Meditation Center (MIMC). Through the transnational contexts of both of these case studies, we argue that Buddhist leaders adapt their teachings to appeal to specific audiences with the underlying goal of preserving the tradition. The Buddhist monastery festival engages with both the scientific and the magical or mystical elements of Buddhism for two very different European audiences. At MIMC, a secular spirituality mixes with Buddhism for international tourists on a meditation retreat. Finally, at MIMC, Thai Buddhist monks learn how to fight the decline of Buddhism through missionizing Theravada Buddhism in this land dominated by Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Paying attention to this multiplicity—to “multiple Buddhisms”—we argue, makes space for the complicated, ambiguous, and at times contradictory manner in which Buddhism is positioned in regards to secularism and secularity.

AbstractThis paper handles the question concerning the factors that control the degree of adaptability of a transplanted religion spread in a culturally alien context. It will be argued that the assumed superiority of both one's religion and one's culture are decisive factors for the willingness to adapt or to refuse adaptation. The theoretical issues will be illustrated by the adoption of Buddhism by its early German followers. Thus, the paper gives a brief survey of the historical development of the adoption of Buddhism in Germany. Characteristics of the early phases will be outlined as well as the state of affairs of Buddhism in Germany in the 1990's. Most remarkable is Buddhism's rapid growth which increased the number of Buddhist centres and groups fivefold since the mid 1970's.On the basis of this historic description a particular line of interpreting Buddhist teachings, that of a rational understanding, is outlined. The analysis of this adoption of Buddhism seeks to show that early German Buddhists interpreted and moulded Buddhist teachings in such a way as to present it as being in high conformity with Western morals and culture. This high degree of adapting Buddhist teachings led to an interpretation which can be characterized as a ‘Buddhism in Protestant shape.’ Buddhism was used as a means of protest against the dominant religion, that of Christianity, but at the same time its proponents took over many forms and characteristics of the religion criticized most heavily.

It is generally agreed that Buddhism, which already came to be known in West Asia during the Sasanian period through commercial exchanges with India, revived in Iran under the Ilkhanids. A pioneering study of Buddhist-Islamic interactions by Elverskog (Buddhism and Islam on the Silk Road, 2010) amply demonstrates the importance of the Mongol period for the understanding of the religious contacts between Buddhists and Muslims, with particular reference to the role of Tibet in this unique socio-cultural as well as scientific encounter (the latter subject is explored by several studies, notably Islam and Tibet – Interactions along the Musk Routes, 2016). On the other hand, it remains a challenging task as to how the impact of Buddhism on the visual and material culture of Ilkhanid Iran should be reassessed, apart from attributions of unusual architectural remains to former Buddhist sites or interpretations of Buddhis iconographical elements found in manuscript paintings and decorative objects.

The word “Buddhism” conjures up a variety of images and connotations: monks meditating on hilltops, mindfulness, cheerful Buddha caricatures. It is unlikely that these depictions suggest engagement with societal issues. And yet, this is precisely what many Buddhist communities and traditions are involving themselves in around the world. Often referred to as “engaged Buddhism”, this development in the Buddhist tradition refers to the application of Buddhist principles and practices to situations of social and environmental suffering. Nevertheless, there are critics of this emerging trend who contend that Buddhists should refrain from engaging in societal issues, believing that such involvement contradicts the teachings of the Buddha and distracts from the ultimate goal of liberation. Built on two years of ethnographic research, this paper explores the ways in which a particular environmentally engaged Buddhist group known as “Extinction Rebellion Buddhists” adapt their religious beliefs and practices in response to the challenges posed by the Anthropocene, where concerns for our collective world have resulted in increasing interest in the ways in which humans actively care for the environment. In reformulating Buddhist principles and meditation as a “politics of care”, care becomes a tool for change, with the group not only confronting the pressing issues of the Anthropocene but also disrupting Buddhism’s traditionally inward-looking, other-worldly tendencies, carving out space for autonomy and transformation within the broader landscape of UK Buddhism.

Over the course of the twentieth century, Buddhism came to be associated widely with peace, tolerance, and calm detachment in the Western popular imagination. This association was created in opposition to depictions of Christianity as violent, intolerant, and irrational. Buddhism, as the imagined perfect Other, held considerable appeal for counterculture seekers disenchanted with mainstream cultures. While many Buddhist groups played upon these stereotypes to enhance their image and support recruitment, one new Buddhist movement—the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order—went further, employing ritualized “therapeutic blasphemy” to eradicate Christian conditioning in their members and critique mainstream society. Such actions baffled many other Buddhists, but make sense when seen as efforts to heighten in-group solidarity, proclaim distinctive identity, and take the assumption of Buddhism’s superiority over Christianity to its ultimate conclusion. This article attempts to explain why Buddhists might develop intolerant practices, and to assess the costs and benefits of such practices.

This study critically analyzes Critical Buddhism (hihan bukkyo ; hereafter: CB) as a philosophical and a religious movement; it investigates the specific basis of CB, particularly the philosophical categories of critica and topica, vis-a-vis contemporary theories of knowledge and ethics, in order to re-situate CB within modern Japanese and Buddhist thought as well as in relation to current trends in contemporary Western thought.
This study is made up of seven chapters, including the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction provides the religious and philosophical context as well as the motivations and intentions of the study. Chapter 2 with the title "Eye of the Storm: Historical and Political Context" is largely explanatory. After a brief analysis of violence, warfare and social discrimination within Buddhism and specifically Japanese traditions, some important background to the context in which Critical Buddhism arose is recalled. In addition, the development of so-called Imperial Way Zen (kodozen )---which represents in many respects the culmination of the 'false' Buddhism the Critical Buddhists attack---is examined. The following chapter on the roots of topica analyses a number of the larger epistemological and ethical issues raised by CB, in an attempt to reinterpret both 'criticalism' and 'topicalism' with reference to four key motifs in Zen tradition: experience (jikishi-ninshin: "directly pointing to the human mind [in order to realize the Buddha-nature]" [B.]); tradition (kyoge-betsuden: "an independent transmission apart from written scriptures" [M. 6, 28]); language (furyu-moji or furyu-monji: "not relying on words and letters" [M. 6]); and enlightenment (kensho jobutsu: "awakening to one's original Nature [and thus becoming a Buddha]" [Dan. 29]). Here and in Chapter 4, on "New Buddhisms: Problems in Modern Zen Thought," the CB argument against the many sources of topical thinking is outlined, paying particular attention to question of 'pure experience' (junsui keiken) developed by Nishida Kitaro and the Kyoto School. Chapter 5 on "Criticism as Anamnesis: Dempo/Dampo" develops the positive side of the CB case, i.e., a truly 'critical' Buddhism, with respect to the place of historical consciousness and the weight of tradition. Chapter 6, "Radical Contingency and Compassion," develops the theme of radical contingency, based on the core Buddhist doctrine of pratitya-samutpada (Jp. engi) as the basis for an effective Critical Buddhist epistemological and ethical strategy. The conclusion elaborates a paradigm for comparative scholarship that integrates the insights of Western philosophical hermeneutics, pragmatism, CB, and so-called 'Buddhist theology'. The implications of the Critical Buddhist project on the traditional understanding of the relation between scholarship and religion are examined, and also the reconnection of religious consciousness to social conscience, which CB believes to be the genius of Buddhism and which makes of CB both an unfinished project and an ongoing challenge.

This work provides an analysis of the two inter-related processes of Buddhist meditation, samatha and vipassanā. Despite their frequent appearance in the Buddhist canonical and commentarial texts, most scholars have not settled the exact role of samatha and vipassanā in the path of enlightenment. They continue to remain divided over the question as to how samatha and vipassanā are related. This research contributes to the eventual resolution of this question for the Buddhist presentation of the way to liberation. The determination will focus on the clarification of samatha, vipassanā, and their collaboration. The clarification of samatha begins with its etymological study as well as the detailed examination of the principle equivalent term, ‘samādhi.’ Its perspective of important set of concentrative attainments, namely, the jhānas will be investigated covering three major areas: the general characteristics of the term ‘jhāna,’ the specific characteristics of each jhāna state and the potentiality of subject of concentration for the jhāna attainments. This investigation of jhānas focuses on their relationship with vipassanā contemplation and Buddhist ultimate goal in reference to the mental quality rather than meditative exercise. The critical analysis of vipassanā is based on two inquiries: the development of vipassanā, and its advantage. The first inquiry is to explore the etymological characteristic of the term ‘vipassanā.’ And then the commencement of vipassanā will be discussed in relation to the complementary process which is samatha. The second inquiry is to examine how the process of vipassanā operates in order to overcome the mental defilements. The evaluation of the relation between samatha and vipassanā will be performed to understand the path of enlightenment. This section aims to clarify the issue of whether or not samatha needs to be strengthened during the process of vipassanā and how they work together in order to nullify all cankers.

Buddhism is a great religion and throughout its history of formation and development has increasingly affirmed its important role in building human personality. With its noble and close humanistic philosophies, Buddhism has penetrated the hearts of the Vietnamese people over the past 2,000 years and become a major religion of the nation. Buddhist teachings have the effect of regulating the consciousness and moral behavior of Vietnamese people. It supports and arouses love, altruism, doing good, avoiding evil... contributing to enhancing the responsibility of each existing in society. Not only applicable among Buddhists, but the ethical content of Buddhism also has a strong influence on society. This contributes to improving the morality of each individual as well as being beneficial to building good morality in Vietnamese society. Living according to Buddhist teachings helps improve individual morality, while also building a good lifestyle for the entire society. Therefore, applying the humanistic values ​​of Buddhist ethics to build Vietnamese human personality is extremely practical and meets the urgent needs of social history.

The Medieval China is a “Manuscript era”. The four divisions of Jing, Shi, Zi, Ji, and the documents of Buddhism and Taoism, all have to be considered based on this general background. For the first part of this paper, the keyword used in the comparison with “Buddhism” in the Medieval China is “Confucianism” rather than “Confucian classics”. Then, the concept and classification of Jiyi (collection of the lost parts of classics) are explained. The second part, starting from the newly published Lunyu Yi shu in Japan in 2020 and integrating with Jiang Zhou yi shulunjia yi ji and other manuscripts, is to analyze some Buddhist factors in the study of Confucianism Yi shu. The third part, from the East Asian Civilization sphere, explores the academic significance of Chinese Buddhism under the perspective of the integration of the Three teachings in the Middle Ages. Special attention will be paid to the Japanese written Guketsu getensho, and how the text form absorbed the Confucian thought will be analyzed. Through these cases, a preliminary conclusion about the relationship between the manuscript culture of Confucianism and Buddhism in the medieval China will be made.

Health is one of the most significant incomes of happiness and well-being. Since ancient times, Buddhism has been intimately intertwined with the avoidance of human suffering. Two thousand five hundred years ago, the supreme Buddha preached about the importance of keeping the mind happy and health care. The Buddha, preached as a doctor, talked about how stress affects our mental health and wellbeing, and that the cure for ailments related to mental health is to understand the Dhamma, and that valuable Dhamma is illustrated in the Suttas. The main objective of this research is to study about the content of Buddhism and its importance on how to get health care through happiness. The secondary objective is to study whether it is possible to achieve a healthy life through happiness with the help and the incorporation of Buddhist sermons. The research uses primary and secondary data. Primary data are collected through participant observation and interviews. Secondary data are obtained from both published and unpublished sources. As further data gathered, embracing the teachings of the Buddha into our lives brings peace of mind and it will lead us to the progressive path of being healthy. The best example of this is the supreme Buddha. Since, he has been the first to heal all the sufferings and to demonstrate to the world the worth and importance of it and how to achieve a healthy and balanced life through it. The philosophy of Zen Buddhism occupies a very important place in V. Pelevin’s prose. The novel «Chapaev and Void» is a Zen novel that tells the story of the enlightenment process of Peter the Void. Chapaev plays the role of a Zen master, imitating or creating koans to inspire Peter the Void. The original meaning of the word “koan” is a judicial document of the ancient Chinese government. Later, the term “koan” was borrowed from Zen Buddhism, and its content is usually a story about a Zen master, a dialogue between the master and his students, questions and hints from the master. The story of “Anagama Buddha” and the “clay machine gun” is the last koan of the novel. At the same time, Chapaev is the reincarnation of Anagama Buddha, whose pinky is a clay machine gun with the power to turn everything into nothingness. The article discusses the sources of the concepts of “Buddha Anagama” and “clay machine gun” and the role of the koan, composed of these concepts, in the implementation of the ideas of Zen Buddhism in the novel. There is no ideal prototype of Anagama; the clay machine gun is the sarira of Buddha Anagama, which is the result of Buddhist practice. The koan «Buddha Anagama and the Clay Machine Gun» was not only narrated, but also realized by Chapaev, which confirms Pelevin’s appeal to Zen Buddhism at different levels of the novel’s structure organization.

Being influenced by the inner-Asian culture, the Khitan people maintained the traditional succession system. However, it caused political chaos after the establishment of the Liao Dynasty. By encouraging the development of Buddhism, the Khitan emperors enhanced the degree of feudalism.

Burning incense occupies an important place in Buddhist rituals, alongside well-known practices such as meditation and reciting sutras. This 38 article explores a number of Buddhist practices that use the healing properties of sandalwood and aquilaria, both of which have an exceptional reputation in both religion and medicine of the East. The burning of fragrant sandalwood and aquilaria wood during meditation and religious ceremonies, the offering of incense to deities, the use of ointments, pills, decoctions in medical practices of Buddhist monasteries is aimed at strengthening physical and mental health on the path to spiritual perfection. Of no small importance is also the study of the canonical writings of Buddhism, which set out not only the religious and philosophical postulates of its teachings, but also contain recipes and methods for compiling incense and recommendations for their use in medicine.

The topic of this research report is an important one in the context of Asia’s rapid economic development in recent years, and the need to rethink development policy and especially methodologies of development communications, so the mistakes of the past will not be replicated. Thus, the study is an important initiative at this period of time. The research takes as a case study the Buddhism for Development Project (BDP) implemented at Ban Bungsanthueng village in the Khammouane Province by its Buddhist Volunteer Spirit for Community network (BVSC network). The fieldwork took place at the BDP’s training centre in Vientiane and the Buddhist initiatives at Ban Bungsanthueng. The research demonstrates how the BDP and its network apply participatory approaches through interpersonal communication, such as sermon delivery, Dhamma (Buddhist teachings) talk, and daily interaction with villagers and project members.

Review question / Objective: Can mindfulness-based intervention recover mental fatigue? Condition being studied: Mental fatigue: mental fatigue is a psychobiological state caused by a prolonged period of demanding cognitive activity, and it has implicated many aspects of daily life. It results in an acute feeling of tiredness and a decreased cognitive ability. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is rooted in Buddhism, and it is defined as the awareness that emerges from paying attention to objects on purpose and without judging the unfolding of experience. In a successful mindfulness mediation, meditators experience current feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations clearly and plainly without judging or evaluating them and acting on the sensation.

As part of this process, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity have all been commandeered by populist parties and movements, each adept at using the power of religion—in different ways and drawing on different aspects of religion—to define the boundary of concepts such as people, nation, and civilization.
