Jamie Boyd walks into the kitchen. He has the same intensely blue eyes as his father. He has the same gentle expression. His hospitality is ingrained. He immediately offers: Coffee? Cake? Tea? Bread? He has the same stammering, hesitant sentence patterns as his father, all commas, dots and dashes, the odd full point offering a rare conclusion. But when I say, "I would have liked to have known your father", his reply is swift and succinct. "There are the paintings." Arthur wrote a clutch of personal letters in his lifetime. He kept no diary. Loathed speech making. Avoided interviews. Mistrusted words. He revealed so little of himself that his youngest daughter, Lucy, confessed, "I'm not sure how well I really knew him". Jamie believed his father was "... a bit of a mystery ... reclusive by nature ... partly hiding something in himself'. Polly, his first born, labelled him "an enigma, probably one of the most secret people on earth". And his wife, Yvonne, admitted her husband would never tell her "how, or what, he felt". In the most revealing letters Arthur Boyd ever wrote, love letters to Yvonne in his early twenties, he warned her (and no doubt any future biographers) that his letters were "only a shadow of me, I'd hate any person to judge me by them, they are a weak shadow".l Vincent van Gogh's letters to his brother, Theo, filled a book. But in Vincent's undelivered dispatch, found on his body after his suicide, he told Theo he had reached the conclusion, " ... the truth is, we can only make our pictures speak". Many would agree, believing that a painting tells us all we need to know about the artist. However, when we look at the wide-open, light-filled, last landscapes that Vincent painted from the window of his room in the sanatorium at Saint-Remy, it changes our perspective to discover that he deleted the bars. Biography, too, is based on distortion; the most brilliantly shining facts always clouded by perception, time and place. Peter Porter, in his 2004 National Biography Award lecture.' said he believed all appearance to be a mystery, all stories partial, and any biography, in the end, no more than a biopsy. A brush stroke transforms, a memory transforms, as a word transforms. Yet, despite the inadequacy of the words' jet down in the following pages, they are driven by a need to make connection. Just as we attempt to understand the land, sea and sky and make maps to find our way, we search for tracings in other lives to help us navigate our own.

Abstract (sommario):

Arthur Boyd (1920-1999) presents art historians with an exceptionally complex critical dimension in terms of his position in twentieth century painting. Although he is considered to be one of the most distinguished Australian painters of the century, in terms of the originality and accomplishment exhibited over five decades (the other being Sir Sidney Nolan O.M,.R.A.), Boyd has been, to date, ill-served by contemporary historians. The earlier definitive publication, by Franz Philipp was published in London as early as 1967. There was subsequently a relatively brief study by Dr Ursula Hoff (1986). In both cases the research was valuable, given the social and cultural climate of each respective period, but their conclusions demand revision in the present perspective. Boyd's completed oeuvre is now open to revisionary analysis in art historical terms, in the light of evolving and more demanding criteria with respect to a properly contemporary social and cultural perspective. My work was in large part complete by 1996, after which the artist suffered terminally from a physically and mentally debilitating condition ; he died three years later. In a radical reappraisal I have accordingly reviewed the chronological progression of his work in various media. This is charted and analysed in terms of its transition from the relatively benign landscape and figurative subject material in the prewar period , then following the trauma of world war a transformation into a more psychologically riven genre of allegorical departures from harmony and visual cohesion; to work driven by global knowledge of atrocity and deprivation. As the postwar work developed, the artist's imagery reflected a deliberate level of appropriation of subject and composition. An awareness of European narrative painting grew at first hand, deployed by him subsequently to develop content via specific collaborations in graphic work, with established scholars and poets. In the 1960s and 1970s Boyd successfully evolved, with his exceptional technical proficiency and draughtmanship, a model whereby religious or historical narrative text was combined with an expanding repertoire of Boyd imagery. I have explored this process and its results to find an original connectivity not previously evaluated. This examines the development of the oeuvre as between thematic content and its expression through Boyd's personal language in painting. Of particular significance I have reappraised Boyd's Bride paintings of the 1950s in the light of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's report, Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families, (1997). In doing so Boyd can be seen as both a courageous and a highly original artist who sought to expose the ills of society through painting. At the same time his work is the product of the ignorance of white Australians in their comprehension of the plight of Australia's dispossessed Indigenous race. These social aspects are here exposed for the first time in my conclusions as essential to the complete reappraisal of Arthur Boyd's ultimate standing in terms of present day critique.

This thesis examines the role of the Antipodeans within the construction of Australian art history from 1956 to 1962. This thesis seeks to address some of the circumstances and myths that surround the Antipodeans and the infamous Antipodean Manifesto. The Antipodeans comprised the artists, Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, John Brack, Bob Dickerson, John Perceval and Clifton Pugh, along with the art historian Bernard Smith. This thesis re-examines the pivotal role the group played in the critical construct that located the Antipodeans’ defence of the figurative ‘image’ in Melbourne, in opposition to the apparent dominance of abstract painting in Sydney. Within this construct, the stand made by the Antipodeans presented a crucial reference point, which retrospectively validated specific events in the build-up to 1959, as well as provided the impetus for future incidents subsequently interwoven into the narrative. The inclusion of Sydney artist Robert Dickerson and potter-turned-painter David Boyd as Antipodeans is addressed in detail. The thesis argues that the critical reception of Robert Dickerson and David Boyd as individual artists, in contrast to their reception as members of the Antipodeans, highlights the exclusions, contradictions and anomalies within the narrative constructed around the Antipodeans, which undermines its authority as defining the history of Australia art at this time.

Documentaries have the power to rewrite history and perpetuate myths in our society. In the case of Easter Island, documentary filmmakers have sensationalized the history of the Rapa Nui people, dwelling on dramatic concepts such as eco-disaster, cannibalism and mysteriously vanishing cultures. As a result of poor filmmaking, we have a mythologized history of Easter Island. In my attempt to create a science-based documentary about an issue affecting contemporary Easter Island society, this mythologizing of history became a major obstacle. It became apparent that I had to first inform audiences to the fact that they had been misinformed by previous documentaries about Easter Island and I had to change their interpretation of the alleged facts. In my thesis paper I examine the documentaries that created sensational statements about the island and reveal why documentary filmmakers rely on dramatic elements. I also examine my approach to the process of making my graduate thesis film, Caballo Loco on Easter Island, and review the methods I used to ensure the people of Rapa Nui were accurately represented.

In Montana, angling closures are used to protect salmonids from the deleterious impacts of angling at elevated water temperatures (23Â°C). Catch-and-release angling (CR) studies have reported high levels (30-40%) of salmonid mortality at water temperatures >20Â°C, but few studies assess CR mortality of salmonids at water temperatures observed in Montana streams during mid-summer (23Â°C). The primary objective of this study was to measure CR mortality of rainbow trout, brown trout, and mountain whitefish in three water temperature treatments; when daily maximum water temperatures were cool (<20Â°C), warm (20 to 22.9Â°C), and hot (23Â°C). A secondary objective was to assess CR mortality of salmonids angled in morning and evening within water temperature treatments. Based on the literature, mortality of salmonids was predicted to be >30% within the hot treatment and higher in evening than morning. Angling (fly-fishing only) occurred in the Gallatin and Smith rivers. All angled fish were confined to in-stream holding cages and monitored for mortality for 72 h. Mortality of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss increased to 9% and 16% in warm and hot treatments, respectively. Mortality of brown trout Salmo trutta was (4%) in the hot treatment in the Smith River. Mountain whitefish Prosopium williamsoni had increased mortality in the warm (20%) and hot (28%) treatments in the Smith River. No mortality for any species occurred in either river when water temperatures were <20Â°C. Mortality of rainbow trout angled in evening was higher than morning in the warm (14%) and hot (16%) treatments in the Smith River. Laboratory results indicated rainbow trout stressed in evening had higher mortality (7%) than those stressed in morning (0%). Angler catch rates were lower for most species in evening than morning angling events; however, catch rates remained high (0.7 fish/h) in several evening angling events. Study results indicate that salmonid mortality rates associated with catch-and-release fly-fishing are higher at elevated (>or equal to 23Â°C) water temperatures. Although there was a relationship between elevated water temperature and salmonid mortality, most of the mortality estimates were well below the 30% mortality that was predicted.

This is a historical documentary research study across Neva Leona Boyd (1876-1963). The theoretical perspective is based on the historical perspective of knowledge from ancient Greece to the approach of modern symbolic interactionism. The study shows that Boyd, who was Viola Spolins teacher, was a proponent of the modern view of group play theory. 1909 she founded Chicago School for Playground Workers, later transformed to the Recreation Training School. Until 1927, the school entered in Hull-House initiated by Jane Addams. The school was incorporated with Northwestern University. Boyd also worked at other schools and the Illinois Department of Public Welfare, where she designed a recreational program for the mentally ill. Contemporary with Boyd was George H. Mead and John Dewey. Boyd's previous work turns out to have some connection to Sweden when Boyd collected and systematized games from different geographical regions of the world. Boyd’s group play theory are identified and described. Boyd’s group play theory highlights the importance of leadership and the intimacy leaders manage to create in group work.

Following on the proposition that the history of Western thought is importantly constituted by a discourse of male-male pedagogic or pederastic relations stretching in narrative form, according to Allan Bloom, from the Phaedrus to Death in Venice, the deconstructive project of reading 'against the visible grain' has been mobilised in the interests of interrogating and unsettling what can only be defined as homophobic misreadings of Martin Boyd. Critical discursive practice, by the near-uniform imposition of a tacit censorship, has refused by means of erasure, silence and repression to reflect on Boyd from the perspective of sexual definition or same-sex love and desire, presumably in the belief that there are no interpretive consequences. In the process, an hypothesis of Boyd as himself mounting an act of social criticism by surreptitiously contesting conventional and hierarchical typologies of masculinity in the margins of institutionalised and popular hegemonic culture, seems to have escaped inscription in the canonical records. Martin Boyd's 'dividedness', 'doubleness', ambivalences and dichotomies point to a complexity that is not ultimately or ontologically resolvable. The Derridean 'de-sedimentation' modus operandi used here makes no claim to a relevatory hermeneutics of Hegelian essence. It does, however, utilise the various tropes of ambivalence, uncertainty, anxiety and incoherence — aspects of Boyd which may be correlated, perhaps, with his sense of the unheimlich or not being at home with himself or his environment — to reposition him in terms of his psychosexual constitution. In the process, the advocacy of aestheticism and pleasure for which he is recognised is found to be tempered and/or subverted by an overt recourse to the transgressive and 'decadent', elements irretrievably linked to his fetishization of the beautiful male body and his obsessive redeployment of the Hellenic ideal of manly love. The interpretive frameworks applied in the reclamation of the 'different' sensibility Boyd articulates by means of an alternately subtilized and strenuous challenge to sex/gender identity and behavioural norms encompass a field ranging from late nineteenth century theoretical discourse on homosexuality through to the intertextual influences of cultural innovators like Pater and Wilde. It includes reference to the literary strategies devised by Sedgwick to uncover deviance and 'erotic pathways'; it surveys the psychoanalytic hypotheses of Freud and Adler as relevant; and it pays heed to an aesthetics of the religio-erotic.

− Mitt syfte med denna uppsats är att pröva förhärskande luftmaktsteori på ett verkligtskeende. I uppsatsen prövas därför giltigheten av John Boyds och John A. Warden III teorier påSlaget om Storbritannien. Min avsikt med detta är inte att ställa Warden mot Boyd för attdärigenom pröva vilken av teorierna som framstår som bättre än den andra, utan metoden attpröva dessa på ett verkligt skeende syftar endast till att pröva dem var för sig. Min frågeställningblir därför;Fråga: Håller dessa teorier för en prövning på en verklig händelse?− För att svara på min frågeställning har jag gått till väga på följande sätt. Uppsatsens förstadel handlar om vad luftmakt är, dess grundläggande egenskaper, fördelar samt begränsningar.Detta för att skapa förståelse för uttrycket som sådant. Därefter följer en genomgång och analysav vad förhärskande luftmakts teori är och tankarna bakom denna. De teorier som behandlasunder detta epitet är de av John Boyd och John A. Warden III. Därefter knyts denna och förstadelen ihop för att därigenom skapa förståelse och en helhetssyn av begreppet luftmakt ochförhärskande luftmaktsteori. Som tredje del i uppsatsen kommer själva prövningen av teoriernamot Slaget om Storbritannien. Denna del är uppdelad i fyra olika faser som avgränsas viadatum. Detta för att skapa en lättöverskådlig struktur. Faserna är i sig indelade i beskrivning avfasen, genomförande och slutresultat. My purpose with this Essay is to examine if the theories of John Boyd andJohn A. Warden III will stand a test of reality. I therefore look at theplanning, execution and result of The Battle of Britain in order to do this.The essay is divided into four different parts. The first part deals with theexpression Air Power, its basic characteristics, advantages and limitations.This part is meant to lead a non air force officer into the essay and make itunderstandable. The next part is an analysis of the theories and the thoughtsbehind them. After this the two parts is amalgamated in order to createknowledge and a comprehensive view of Air Power and its theories. Thethird part is the test of the theories. In this part The Battle of Britain isdivided into four different phases in order to create a good structure and apossibility for the reader to follow me in my discussions. The theories aretested by looking at preparation, carrying through and results in bothGerman and British behaviour. By saying this I want to stress that thepurpose with the essay is not to examine why the German campaign endedas it did or why RAF took the victory, nor is it a test of which one of thetheories is the better one. It is a test where I look at Boyd by examineRAF/FC planning, carrying through and results and Warden by doing thesame on Luftwaffe. The fourth part is a summing up, where the question ofthe essay is answered.In my answer I level criticism against the “five ring model” of JohnWarden. The remark I do concerns the idea of separating the political willfrom the people. I find this separation valid only when looking on adictatorship not a democracy. In this discussion I find that the targetingmodel affects the theory in the way that it only suits physical destructionbased on parallel attacks and not psychic breakdown.The theory of John Boyd passes without remarks.Having said this I discuss what these results tells us. I find that the essayproves the possibility to falsify a theory but that the result is valid in thiscase only. The main issue I want to point out with my result though is thatit can work as a springboard for further examinations of these theories. Ifother authors come to the same result as I, with their examinations made onother real events, the conclusion must be that the answers all togetherproofs that the theory limps. How many answers that must point in thesame direction I don’t know, the important thing is that the theories aretested, otherwise the risk is that they can be looked at as truths, which theyare not.

The critical introduction to this collection of short fiction argues that writing is reading and that reading is writing. The argument draws descriptions of writing as reading from such diverse sources as Sherwood Anderson, Roland Barthes, Neil Simon, J. Hillis Miller and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, as well as from the author's own experience. Descriptions of reading from phenomenological and subjective criticism, including the theories of Georges Poulet, Wolfgang Iser, Stanley Fish and David Bleich, affirm the creative role of the reader, show that the reader, in fact, writes the text in the process of reading. The introduction concludes that reader, writer and text are all constructs of language, that both reading and writing are, ultimately and primarily, thought.

Abstract (sommario):

Karl Popper's philosophy of science includes both falsificationism and realism. I explore the relationship between these two positions in his philosophy and find a strong tension between them. Drawing upon this tension in Popper's philosophy, I explore the general relationship between falsificationism and realism in an effort to determine whether or not the two positions can be successfully combined. Rather than criticizing falsificationism, I focus instead on the realist side of the tension and seek to resolve the tension through the introduction of an alternative form of scientific realism. I examine three alternatives in detail: Hilary Putnam's internal realism, Richard Boyd's realism, and Ian Hacking's entity realism. Internal realism is shown to be an unsatisfactory solution because of its failure to incorporate a notion of approximate truth. Boyd's version of realism is also shown to be unsatisfactory due to its ascription of absolute approximate truth to scientific theories. Hacking's entity realism, while consistent with falsificationism in many respects, is also shown to be problematic due to its apparent reliance upon induction. Finally, I propose a solution to the problem, which consists in the elaboration of an alternative version of scientific realism based primarily on a reinterpretation of Hacking's entity realism that stresses non-inferential knowledge of causes. I also argue that the reinterpreted form of Hacking's realism can be used to support Boyd's notion of a theoretical tradition, although one of entities and their causal properties rather than one of approximately true theories.

Syftet med uppsatsen var att analysera Tysklands anfall mot Frankrike år 1940 och närmre bestämt vad som hände vid floden Meuse mellan den 12 – 14 maj utifrån ett beslutsfattande perspektiv. För att kunna uppnå syftet valdes först en beslutsfattningsteori, OODA – loopen, som låg till grunden för bildandet av ett analysverktyg. Därefter användes en fallstudie för att beskriva de olika händelserna mellan den 12 – 14 maj. I fallstudien tas först det doktrinära synsättet på krig upp, därefter planering, organisation och slutligen förbandens aktioner. Utifrån denna grund analyseras sedan de olika faktorerna med hjälp av OODA – loopen. Slutligen drar författaren slutsatser baserat på analysen och svara på frågeställningarna. Resultaten påvisar en stor skillnad i förmåga att genomgå beslutsprocessen på vardera sidan där fransmännen har ett lägre tempo kontra tyskarna. Orsakerna till denna differens beror tillstor del på de kulturella skillnader som finns. Dessa kulturella skillnader bottnar i olika syn på krigföring. En annan faktor som påverkar är att tyskarna lyckas på grund av sina aktioner försvåra för fransmännen genom att agera på ett oväntat sätt. Konsekvenserna av den asymmetri som uppstår blir att fransmännen misslyckas med att slå tillbaka den tyska attacken trots ett gyllene tillfälle.

The purpose of this paper was to analyze the German attack on France in 1940 at the river Meuse from a decision making perspective. In order to achieve this aim a decision-making theory was chosen, OODA - loop, this theory formed the basis of witch an analytical tool was formed. After the formation of an analytical tool a case study were used to describe the different events that took place May 12 to 14 in1940. In the case study the doctrinal approach to war is first described, then the planning, organization, and finally the operations. On this basis an analysis of the various factors is preformed using the OODA - loop. Finally, the author draws conclusions based on the analysis and answer questions. The results show a significant difference in the ability to go through the decision-making process. The French have a slower pace versus the Germans. The reasons for this difference are due largely to the cultural differences. These cultural differences are rooted in different views of warfare. Another factor that has an effect is the way the Germans fight. Due to the unorthodox manner in the way that the Germans go about the French can´t rely on previous experience in the orientation phase. The consequence of the anomaly which arises is that the French fail to repel the German attack despite a golden opportunity.

In this paper I undertake an investigation of the meaning of sexual difference for Tiqqun’s theory of the Young Girl, which describes a commodified subjectivity in the neoliberal age. Tiqqun’s claim, that Young Girl is not to be understood as a gendered concept but rather as a détournement of the capitalist girl archetype, is put in relation to Jennifer Boyds development of their theory. According to Boyd’s interpretation of Young Girl as an embodied, gendered subjectivity, she can resist the control of the Empire by transforming from non-agency to pure agency, the latter being the state Boyd coins Strange Girl. In order to understand the radical notions that seem to follow from interpreting Young Girl in terms of gendered subjectivity, I apply Paul B. Preciado’s theory of techno-gender in the pharmacopornographic era to Tiqqun and Boyd respectively. Preciado’s theory offers a way of addressing Young Girl as a specific embodied subject and holder of a potentia gaudendi, an orgasmic potential that is either exploiting or being exploited depending on the bearers techno-gender. To conclude, this essay offers up a re-reading of Young Girl as being the exploited techno femininity that transform, via molecular gender and sex-hacking, into Strange Girl and orgasmic agency. Thereby she performs an actual, and not symbolical, resistance against the biopower performed by the Empire.

This study examines the activity of the Nellie Boyd Dramatic Company between 1879 and 1888. Actress-manager Nellie Boyd formed the company around 1876 and from 1879 onward she decided to perform exclusively in the western U.S., pioneering several southwestern territories. This thesis discusses the Boyd company's impact on the life of particular western towns; the organization of the company, its repertoire and the possible significance of Boyd's choice of roles; and the critical reception accorded to Boyd and her company. The study of Boyd's career in the West offers insights into the significance of traveling companies on the cultural and social development of growing communities. It illustrates the activity of independent traveling companies parallel to the rise of the combination managerial system. It also reveals the story of a woman leading a successful show-business enterprise and enhancing her personal and professional reputation in the nineteenth-century western scene.

According to architect Robin Boyd (1952 rev. ed. 1968), ʹthe Australian country house took its pattern, not directly from the English countryside, but second‐hand from the Australian cityʹ in the nineteenth century. This thesis explores the introduction of domestic architectural ideas in the Shoalhaven Local Government Area (LGA) from the 1840s to the 1890s, and concludes that Boydʹs premise, including his five principal plan types, applied in general, subject to regional geographical parameters. The Illawarra and South Coast districts dominated New South Wales dairy farming by the 1860s. The transfer of architectural ideas to the Shoalhaven LGA was facilitated by steam shipping lines from 1855, as the dominant vector, which provided access to the Sydney markets. Architectural development began with a masonry construction boom during the 1860s and 1870s, followed by a timber construction boom in the 1880s and 1890s. In the Ulladulla District development was influenced by local stonemasons and Sydney architects from the 1860s‐1870s, as well as regional developments in the Illawarra, which also influenced Kangaroo Valley in the 1870s. The Nowra Area, the administrative and commercial focus of the Shoalhaven District from 1870, was where architectural developments in timber and masonry were greatest, influenced by regional developments, Sydney architects and carpenters and builders of German origin and training. A local architectural grammar and style began to develop in the 1880s and 1890s, assisted by the railway, which arrived at Bomaderry near Nowra in 1893. However, the depression and drought of the 1890s resulted in a hiatus in construction, exacerbated by the First World War 1914‐1918, in common with the rest of New South Wales.

This thesis will explain in detail two closely related but jointly defensible moral realist positions. I show how each position responds to the initial dilemma of whether moral judgments are propositions. Following this discussion, I defend this combined position against an objection that the position is inherently contradictory. I conclude that one can coherently maintain both positions without a contradiction.

La rencontre interartistique entre littérature et photographie, manifestant l'hétérogénéité d'un medium traditionnel et d'un medium technologique, pose à la fin du XXe siècle des questions spécifiques. Cette période qualifiée de postmoderne, vit sur le mode de la multiplicité, mais aussi de la perte, la relation au réel. C'est ce qu'expriment plusieurs artistes (plasticiens et écrivains) à travers des oeuvres hybrides que l'on peut qualifier d'expérimentales au sens propre du terme : elles permettent aux créateurs et aux lecteurs/spectateurs d'appréhender le monde de façon ludique et interconnectée. Le premier temps de l'étude, qui concerne l'hétérogénéité interne de l'oeuvre, rend compte de la relation antagonique qu'ont longtemps entretenu l'écriture et la photographie, cette dernière n'ayant accédé que difficilement à la dignité de medium artistique à cause de son lien très fort avec le réel. Les oeuvres jouent sur cet écart, tout en parvenant à mettre en place une dynamique d'échange et d'interactions entre les composantes. Mais l'hétérogénéité des mediums crée des liens, des traversées de frontières qui ouvrent l'oeuvre sur l'extérieur. La deuxième étape de l'analyse s'attache donc à définir ces oeuvres comme poreuses vis-à-vis du réel. Celui-ci s'y inscrit de façon massive, ce qui entraîne leur décanonisation en termes de statut artistique. Pourtant, on observe finalement que l'oeuvre d'art hétérogène met en place toutes sortes de stratégies d'appropriation de ce réel, qui se retrouve alors contaminé, malmené par la fiction. Le monde de référence est tout d'abord mis en doute dans l'oeuvre, qui parvient à dépasser les répartitions traditionnelles de la littérature et de la photographie en ce qui concerne leur fidélité au réel. Les sociétés africaines, caribéennes, et anglaises présentent, quoique partageant, d’une manière formelle, des caractéristiques, des profils divers en raisons des spécificités des milieux physiques dans lesquels elles se déploient. Ainsi, il a été important, dans ce travail, d’établir un lien nombrileux entre l’espace et le discours. En effet, l’analyse sémiotique de l’espace littéraire dans les oeuvres de Ngugi wa Thiong’o, George Lamming et William Boyd a conduit à une conclusion qui prend valeur d’importance dans des événements et des réalités politico-sociales. Etudiée sous un angle sémiotique, la nomenclature de ces réalités fait sens dans des contextes et cotextes communicationnels à travers lesquels se lisent des aspects pragmatiques. Les toits langagiers et les contenus énonciatifs laissent observer des logiques positionnelles et transformationnelles, lesquelles épousent fondamentalement des aspects de la continuité et de la discontinuité. Et cela fait du message textuel un récit anthropologique relaté dans un univers interactionnel qui forme un tout de signification
African, Caribbean, and English societies, in spite of the fact that they share common features, remain different in their profile on the grounds of the particularities of the physical spaces that witness their expressions and the specific goals they target within historical, cultural, political and economic data that form out their social stratification. In this way, it becomes important, as a main idea of this work, to put on surface the intrinsic link between space and discourse. A semiotic analysis of literary space in Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s, George Lamming’s and William Boyd’s works has led to a concluding argument which highlights social and political realities. Read through a semiotic stand, the nomenclature of these events and realities root their meaning in communicating scenarios which portray pragmatic aspects. Levels of language and nature of messages help to observe some logic of positions and transformations that imply continuity and discontinuity dimensions. What affects to the literary message an anthropological account narrated into a framework of interactions that articulate a totalizing significance

Denna uppsats analyserar och prövar den ledningsteori som är framlagd av Martin vanCreveld i boken ”Ledning i krig”. Prövningen tar sin utgångspunkt i Poppers metod omteoriprövning. Van Crevelds slutsatser testas först internt och sen överses teoribilningenslogiska form. Slutligen jämförs slutsatserna med andra teorier om ledning ochorganisation. Resultatet visar att Crevelds teorier har sämre intern korrelation än extern.Orsaken bedöms främst vara hans fria hållning och låg precision i egen metod.

Under efterkrigstiden har ett antal operationer med luftmakt genomförts. Dessa krig har haft olika förlopp där vissa operationer har nått relativt enkla framgångar medan andra haft större svårigheter att effektivt uppnå framgång, trots överlägsna resurser. Genom en fallstudie av två moderna luftoperationer, operation Desert Storm i Irak år 1991 och operation Allied Force i Kosovo år 1999, undersöks tre luftmaktsteoretiska variablers betydelse för dessa operationers väg till framgång. Variablerna som undersöks är hämtade ur den moderna luftmaktsteori som John Warden har bidragit till att bilda och vars syfte är att bidra till att förklara hur strategisk förlamning av motståndaren uppkommer. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att systemperspektiv sannolikt bidrar till luftoperativ framgång, däremot kan inte parallell attack visas ha betydelse för att uppnå framgång. Den tredje undersökta variabeln, luftoperativ kontroll, befinns vara betydelsefull som en förutsättning för de övriga två variablernas funktion.

This study examines how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems can change the conditions for a decision-making process using John Boyd's OODA loop. The study is conducted through a qualitative text research method. The purpose is to analyze the systems based on a Swedish context by using empirical material from Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) and ”Perspektivstudien 2016-2018”. John Boyd's OODA loop is used as a theoretical framework for the analysis where AI and autonomous systems will be studied based on each phase. The results indicate that AI and autonomous systems can provide opportunities to improve intelligence report capabilities by gathering larger amounts of information from the battlefield. The military effect will be increased through a better situation awareness, processing larger amounts of information that will improve the management for decision making, analyzing and offering more course of action at a faster pace. Although it indicates that these systems will not be used as a decisive decision-maker, they will however create good conditions for those who make the decisions and provide a central system support.

Slaget om Malta, under andra världskriget, hade en avgörande roll vad gäller kriget i Medelhavet. Maltas strategiska läge gjorde att det var en åtråvärd ö för axelmakterna och britterna kämpade för att försvara sin position. I kampen om sjöherraväldet hade luftrummet stor betydelse och hur flygstridskrafterna användes var direkt avgörande. John A. Warden III och John Boyd är båda framstående luftmaktsteoretiker och deras teorier har fått stort genomslag, framförallt i västvärlden. Syftet med denna uppsats är att tillämpa dessa teorier på ett empiriskt exempel, slaget om Malta, beträffande luftstridskrafternas användande. Undersökningen bär mot att utröna hur långt teorierna är användbara för analysen av slaget om Malta. Uppsatsen genomförs med en kvalitativ innehållsanalys och komparativ analys för att jämföra teorierna med händelseförloppet. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att teorierna är tillämpningsbara för händelseförloppet under slaget. Hela Boyds teori samt delar ur Wardens teori är långt användbara för analysen.

Overall, this thesis was designed to explore the nature of adolescent boys' body image, the effects of body image on body change strategies and psychological adjustment, and the factors that influence body image. The first study examined body image in 362 adolescent boys. Body image was considered in terms of attitudes to different body parts and attributes, including, lower, middle and upper body, as well as weight, shape and muscles. The relationships between Body Mass Index (BMI), body image, sociocultural messages, psychological adjustment and body change strategies, including strategies to decrease weight and increase muscles using food and exercise, drive for thinness, bulimic attitudes and behaviour, excessive exercise, food supplements to lose weight, increase muscles and steroids, were also investigated. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the role of body image, sociocultural messages and psychological adjustment to predict satisfaction with different body attributes and body change strategies. The findings from study one led to the development of a program aimed at preventing the development of unhealthy attitudes and behaviours among adolescent boys. Study two involved the implementation and evaluation of this prevention program. One hundred and twenty one boys participated in the program. The program was based on social-cognitive theory, and included a focus on accepting differences and the development of self-esteem. The boys who participated in the program indicated some change in existing attitudes and showed less development of risk behaviours relative to the control group. The implications of the findings from this thesis in relation to future research, as well as the prevention of adolescent boys' body image problems are discussed.

The typical form for a molecular mechanics force field consists of a foundation of pair-wise terms to describe bonded and non-bonded atomic interactions, with multi-body correction terms to deal with the limitations of pair-wise terms. I present here the first attempts of a molecular mechanics model that is founded on multi-body terms, which are based on the Bond Valence Model (Brown, 2002) and recent developments in the Vectorial Bond Valence Model (Bickmore et al., 2013a; Harvey et al., 2006). I calibrated these models on pressure vs. energy curves for a set of SiO2 polymorphs. The average deviation for the best-fit iteration, with only six adjustable parameters was ±1.98 kcal/mol.

This paper examines how precision resources, such as Precision Guided Munitions (PGM) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), can affect the OODA loop decision making cycle. PGMs add precision and force to kinetic strikes, whilst UASs bring precision and endurance to the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) field. The research is conducted as a qualitative case study with two cases - the first one being Operation Desert Storm (1991) where precision weapons were first introduced in a large scale operation, and the second one being Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003) which was conducted in a similar environment and organization, but with a huge technological advancement when it came to PGMs and UASs. The four phases of the OODA loop are examined separately, and the two cases are compared to reveal any similarities or differences. The results indicate that precision resources have a beneficial impact on the speed and accuracy of all four phases, as well as the overall efficiency of the OODA loop. The aim of this study has been to highlight the website and forum Boys With ED (Eating Disorders), to give us a deeper understanding of the structure, content and member activity as it is seen at the forum, and to show how these aspects interplay with each other. The report is divided into two parts. Part one is about Internet theory and practice. By having had a closer look at how the forum is structurally built up, with regard to the services, guidelines and functions, information is given regarding how the platform itself might affect the member activity held there. The question whether participation at the forum might enhance extreme views among its members has been answered, as well as how the members choose to integrate media material from other resources. Different general traits of Internet use has been related to the forum Boys With ED, as well as theory regarding focus on information or focus on virtual togetherness within a virtual sphere. Part two is about body image theory, masculinity theory and identity theory, since the members of Boys With ED post content related to these issues at the forum. The study of Boys With ED has been conducted by using a combination of virtual ethnography and thematic analysis. The platform's functions and the content of it have been studied. Through the reading of the discussion threads during one month's time, themes have been extracted. The findings show that Boys With ED has many of the possible functions and services an Internet community can have, but it is clear that the participating members' activity is more about discussions with likeminded than using the platform's different functions or integrating media material. The forum can in many ways be considered as a Pro-Ana forum, and members are at risk of getting more extreme views while participating at the forum. At the same time, the members display concerns regarding other members' health, and some of them write they wish other members to recover from their eating disorder. The members display different traits of Internet use, and post plenty of information regarding eating disorder related issues, as well as comments probably posted in order to support and/or motivate each other. They also display occupation with body image issues, and seem to connect their identities tightly to their bodies. In addition, their wish for a thin body can be said to go against the concept of hegemonic masculinity.

The body composition of female collegiate athletes was measured using the Bod Pod® device. The sample consisted of 75 student athletes, aged 18 to 22 years old. Five sports at the university level were represented, including basketball, gymnastics, soccer, swimming & diving, and soccer. Participants were measured at the preseason and postseason periods. Overall, participants in all five sports were not found to change significantly in total body mass, fat mass, fat free mass, percent body fat, or body mass index from the preseason period to the postseason period at the alpha = 0.05 level. On average, the members from each of the different teams were found to be significantly different from each other for one or more variables. In general, basketball and volleyball players were found to be similar in body composition. The average member on the swimming & diving, soccer, and gymnastics teams was found to vary from the average team member on each of the other teams.

Childhood is an important period for determining long-term health in life. One of the biggest threats facing children is obesity. Globally, childhood obesity is reaching the level of a serious public health concern. In some countries, rates of obesity have more than doubled in the last two decades. For example, in Saudi Arabia a recent national study of 11,112 children aged from 2-7 years found the prevalence of obesity among Saudi children has almost doubled since 2002. Global literature shows that obesity is a complex issue and that many factors contribute to children becoming overweight. From a review of the Saudi literature, it is clear that no previous study has used observation as a research methodology to explore the factors affecting body weight in Saudi schools and this is the first study completed within the Islamic school context. The aim of this study was to explore factors that affect body weight among boys in three types of school in Saudi Arabia (public, Islamic and private). A case study design and qualitative methods were adopted. Data were generated through observations, interviews with teachers and students, and by analysing documents. Three research committees from Cardiff University and the Saudi Ministry of Education approved the study. The total interviewees numbered 33 students and 18 teachers. The data analysis process was thematic and used inductive techniques, findings across all cases are presented under four major themes. The school’s system and philosophy play a significant role in affecting body weight among Saudi boys in primary schools. This theme includes the teacher’s role, school canteen system, school programmes and the role of the Ministry of Education. For example, in the public and Islamic schools, canteens are important source of income and this directs each school to sell to students what they want regardless of its nutritional value. The school environment, its infrastructure and facilities was the second theme. Unlike the private school, the public and Islamic schools benefited from new, appropriate, designs. Both these two schools have outdoor sports facilities but they are not prepared to maintain and continue physical education lessons in extreme weather conditions. The students’ health behaviours are a further factor affecting body weight among Saudi boys at all types of primary school. This theme includes students’ preferences, society and community. Three factors that exist outside schools can also affect students’ body weight at all types of primary school. These are media, family, and languages. Drawing on these themes, recommendations are made for policy, practice and research.
