Abstract (sommario):
The world Reader bookstore has a structured collection of books neatly arranged on shelves. The question is how the bookstore should keep the shelves full and make profit at the same time. Books are expensive due to the building tax that the business owner needs to pay, along with the tax imposed on each book. Hence, a bookstore owner will typically increase the prices of the books to make profit. Due to the high prices, people are keener to buy books through online store. Thus, this study is conducted to optimize books needed to be sold in a bookstore using the fuzzy linear programming approach. This study will focus more on fiction and non-fiction books that are available in the bookstore, which will help the bookstore to achieve its highest profit in the future. The result shows that the profit in a closed interval of [RM209016.00, RM348691.20] was obtained once the fiction and non-fiction books were [0 unit, 8000 units] and [4000 units, 4000 units]. Based on the findings of the study, other businesses can also use this method in to optimize their business in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
Why does W. G. Sebald’s Austerlitz escape from the laws of fictionality and factuality? How do so many of the people and place names inside of it start so improbably with the letter A? Why do so many iterations of A—as initials, as markings, or as individual letters—appear somewhat frequently and prominently? Why does the return of the repressed coincide with the completion of a crossword puzzle taking place in a used bookstore? Why is the puzzle located in the Telegraph? Why, of all people, is the owner of the bookstore named Penelope? What role do the bookstores, museums, and libraries play? Finally, what is the question that Sebald’s Austerlitz is supposed to answer? To answer these questions, a historically problematized rereading of the text is necessary. In terms of the History of Ideas, these questions recall Walter Benjamin’s interpretation of Proust and his Arcades Project; in terms of cultural history, the rise of the crossword puzzle; and in terms of the sources behind Austerlitz, a book and a radio program that have been either ignored or underappreciated in the criticism.

Abstract (sommario):
Kopi Toko Djawa is a coffee shop building that was originally a historic bookstore called Djawa Bookstore located in Bandung. Toko Buku Djawa itself was built in 1955 with an owner named Mrs. Tjoe who is from Central Java. Active as a bookstore for 60 years, Toko Buku Djawa finally officially closed and stopped operating in 2015. At the end of 2017, precisely in December, Toko Buku Djawa officially transformed into a coffee shop that is now known as Kopi Toko Djawa. This research will examine how the interior design journey applied to this coffee shop over time. Using qualitative methods and descriptive analysis in this study, data collection is carried out by jumping directly into the field and also equipped with secondary data in the form of scientific journals, photos, and websites. The step now taken by the owner of Kopi Toko Djawa is to use the existing building with new functions but still maintain the atmosphere of the 1950s and traditional interiors that already exist. For some elements of space fillers such as shelves and storefronts where books are displayed are still presented so that the impression that has been left by Toko Buku Djawa before is not lost. Kopi Toko Djawa located at Jalan Braga no. 81 Bandung can be one of the inspirations in building a coffee shop with a simple and traditional interior theme and concept.

Abstract (sommario):
The company of Johann Georg Gastl and his sons was one of major printing and bookselling houses operating in Brno in the middle of the 19th century. Johann Nepomuk Gastl and his younger brother Franz Gastl had trained as booksellers. Johann Nepomuk Gastl assumed the management of the company after the death of Johann Georg Gastl. The younger Franz joined the family business in 1821 and between 1821–1829 worked as a bookseller in Olomouc. He moved to Brno in 1829 and took over the management of the publishing house and bookstore. He founded the first public book-rental shop at the bookstore in 1831. His brother decided to sell him his printing business in 1836, which made Franz Gastl the sole owner of an ever-growing company (the company of Franz Gastl became a printing company, lithographic shop, type foundry, publishing house, bookstore and book-rental shop). Franz Gastl died in 1855, and his company was taken over by his son Georg Gastl, who continued his father’s activities.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite various global and local economic crises, the shift of some readers to screen reading, growing online shopping habits, and the shorter time spent on reading books, physical bookstores are able to change and retain their customers. This research is a continuation of a 2013 study in order to capture the current situation and identify the changes that have taken place in Lithuanian physical bookstores over the past five years. During the research, the list of bookstores operating in Lithuania compiled in 2013 was updated and clarified, and an analysis of the collected data and comparison with the data of 2013 were performed. The results showed that from 2013 to 2018 the number of bookstores in Lithuania decreased by 18.8%, to 168 units. On average, the number of inhabitants per Lithuanian bookstore increased by 16.2% and reached 16,720 inhabitants per bookstore; the number of municipalities with no bookstores at all increased to 15 (9 in 2013). The largest Lithuanian bookstore networks remained the same: Vaga and Pegasas, which maintained almost the same number of bookstores – 33 bookstores at the end of 2018. The number of medium-sized bookstore networks decreased, and only one of the nine small bookstore networks (2–3 bookstores), which owned two bookstores in 2013, remained. Such changes show that the two major bookstore networks Vaga and Pegasas are strengthening their market position. Calculated by the number of bookstores, in 2018 they already ran 39% of the market. The range of available books in physical Lithuanian bookstores has decreased – from an average 9 thousand titles in 2013 up to 6 thousand titles in 2018. It seems that the 2004–2008 race between physical bookstores for the largest range of book titles in the past is now witnessing an increase in the choice of additional goods in bookstores, sometimes even exceeding their book sales. The decrease and change in the number and range of physical bookstores in Lithuania since 2008 was due to several reasons – from the economic crisis at that time, the continuing decline of the population to the decline of book reading habits, and the transition of some readers to on-screen reading and online shopping.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract François Maspero is best known as the owner of the radical Latin Quarter bookstore La joie de lire and the founder and editor of Éditions Maspero, but he was also a writer, a translator, and a journalist. Maspero published several novels and wrote for media outlets like Le Monde and France Culture. He wrote about his travels throughout Eastern Europe, Israel-Palestine, Algeria, and the Caribbean, and published literature reviews, obituaries, and even his testimony of the events of 17 October 1961. This article is the first comprehensive analysis of his work as a print journalist for Le Monde, notably as a travel writer. While Maspero critiqued journalism in both of his novel-travelogues, Les passagers du Roissy-Express (1990) and Balkans-Transit (1997), this article argues that his journalism was a breeding ground for his novel-writing and vice versa. The intersection between journalism, novel writing, and militancy also allowed him to create a multidirectional activism, which reanimated past militancy to understand contemporary political crises.

Abstract (sommario):
Sylvia Beach (1887–1962) is remembered primarily for the two feats of which she was proudest, publishing Ulysses and “STEERing a little bookshop for about twenty-two years between the two wars,” as she puts it in the text reprinted here. Her “little bookshop,” Shakespeare and Company, was for Ernest Hemingway “a warm, cheerful place with a big stove in winter, tables and shelves of books, new books in the window, and photographs on the wall of famous writers both dead and living” (35). In 1919, with support from Adrienne Monnier, the owner of a neighboring bookstore, Beach launched the Left Bank shop that would serve as a hub for French and expatriate writers.1 In her 1959 memoir, Shakespeare and Company, Beach tells stories of her friends and patrons, who included F. Scott Fitzgerald, T. S. Eliot, Thornton Wilder, Gertrude Stein, Walter Benjamin, Paul Valéry, Simone de Beauvoir, HD (Hilda Doolittle), Samuel Beckett, and many others. Beach also describes there her other great feat, the publication of Ulysses. When British and American printers were prevented from publishing Joyce's Dublin epic because it was considered too obscene, Beach stepped in. Her fortuitous situation as a seller of English-language books in Paris inspired her to risk bringing out Ulysses herself. In February 1922, after a legendary struggle, the first edition of Ulysses appeared under the imprint “Shakespeare and Company.”

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the insufficiently known aspect of Mykhailo М. Rudnytskyi's activity: his publishing projects. History of his becoming as a publisher is considered, especially his collaboration with the Polish bookstore of Bernard Polonetski and the Kyiv publishers. The study analyses М. Rudnytskyi's views on the interwar Ukrainian publishing process, its state, tasks, and prospects, in particular, the commercial orientation of publishing projects. М. Rudnytskyi was convinced that a commercial aspect is one of a key in the publishing business. However, this interpretation of publishing and book business has not always been understood by contemporaries, especially from the nationalist (Yuri Lypa) and сatholic (Mykola Hnatyshak, Alexander Mokh) ideological camps. Attention is concentrated on a collaboration with a publishing house «Izmarahd», in particular with its owner Mykhailo Matchak, and also on the realization scale publishing project «Biblioteka “Dila”». As publishing projects were focused on the translated fiction, Rudnitsky's approaches to translations were examined, for example, the questionable practice of shortening text. The opinion on publishing projects of М. Rudnytskyj in the printing of that period is also reflected. The author attracts correspondence of М. Rudnytskyj with contemporaries, such as M. Mochulskyj, M. Zerov, M. Yatskiv. Also the repertory of publishing projects of М. Rudnytskyj is analyzed. Keywords Mykhailo Rudnytskyi, publishing house, «Biblioteka “Dila”», publishing house «Izmarahd», Mykhailo Matchak.

Abstract (sommario):
The article described the publishing practices that were used by the publishers living in the 18th century. They were shown on the example of the activities of Georg Markus Knoch (1695-1759), one of the thriving acting Gdansk’s booksellers and publishers. Knoch was born in Wroclaw, made his first steps in the profession in Wittenberg. Then he arrived in Gdansk in 1728 where he opened the Bookstore on Piwna Street. He published approximately one hundred titles, several of which were title editions. Reissues of the title editions appeared in his publishing for a number of reasons. Most of the time, Gdansk‘s bookseller took over parts of the other publishers‘ titles; it happened due to their death, or due to the closure or change of the owner of the print shops. Wanting to get rid of some of the unsold copies of the books was the other reason of publishing some of his title editons. In this case he would have either lightly modified the editions, or he would have put the information on the title edition saying that it is an another issue, suggesting to potential customers that they are dealing with a completely new work, or that the first edition was a great success and it needed reissuing. Publishing practices used by Kanch show how often publishers in the 18th century were unable to sell many of the titles.

Abstract (sommario):
Darul Ulum Bookstore is engaged in distributing LKS books to be sent to schools. The need for worksheets that support learning is one of the most important aspects of availability in the store. so it takes sufficient stock in the order at the beginning of the semester. In this case, the shop owner has difficulty in estimating the number of books to be ordered, so a calculation model is needed to estimate how many books will be ordered at the beginning of the semester. The Multiple Linear Regression method is one of the methods used to predict how many books will be ordered. This method uses the dependent variable and the independent variable as the basis by taking into account the initial stock of books for 2018 and 2019 as the independent variable (x) and the initial stock of 2020 as the dependent variable (y). The results of this study obtained a predictive accuracy value from each printing, namely for CV. Hasan Pratama with MAPE testing of 6.42% with very good indicators. CV. Pratama Mitra Aksara with MAPE testing of 23.52% the results of the indicators are feasible, and CV. Pilar Pustaka with MAPE testing of 6.75% the indicator results are very good. Abstract (sommario):
From traditional physical bookstores to the digital realm of online bookshops, business owners continuously adapt to meet their customers' evolving demands. Technological progress, occurring at a relentless pace, has instigated a profound transformation in the landscape of e-commerce. Google's creation of Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) has triggered a revolution in mobile development. This research endeavor, employing online bookstores as a case study, presents an architectural framework for PWAs that holds relevance for a wide array of e-commerce applications. The framework emerged through a meticulous review of existing models in the online bookstore domain, pinpointing gaps that serve as strengths in the proposed model. Additionally, the study critically examines the emerging PWA technology to solidify the foundation of the proposed framework. The adoption of this model holds the promise of mitigating contemporary challenges in the mobile development sphere, particularly the issue of code fragmentation. Nevertheless, further exploration of payment gateways and modules is required to fortify the model's comprehensiveness and effectiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
In the Turkish cultural sphere there is very limited information available on the history of bookstores, although they are considered among the most important places of Istanbul’s cultural life. One can come across scraps of information either in recollections on Babıâli or in some memoirs devoted to the history of the rare books trade in Turkey. Traditionally the rare books trade and bookstores were mostly in the hands of Armenians, Greeks and Jews in the Ottoman Empire and early Republican years. However there is not much information available on these dealers and store owners. Not holding broader information about the three Jewish bookstores studied in this article stems from such lack of information and documentation.

Abstract (sommario):
Print-on-demand technology allows printing single book up to 200 copies. Correct use of digital printing and binding equipment effectively addresses the economics of this process as well. A process of storing the books is ignored as the number of printed copies is directly related to the number of orders. Publishing house owning the printed version of PDF publication chooses the file from the database and sends it to the printing company with the on-demand printer. This process is highly efficient for printing companies and also for bookstores as well. Bookstores should be no exception in being Print-on-demand printer owners.

Kecil Bahagia Store is one of the bookstores that has difficulties when they want to do transaction processes, check the available book stock and make sales reports because of the frequent loss of transaction data, and available stock items this results in checking the stock of books and making reports requires sufficient time long. Another problem is that in the process of selling transactions, the manual process is used by recording each transaction in the book. This shop requires a software to improve the system. In the thesis designed a desktop application-based sales software facilitated information on available book stock, recording sales transactions with a computerized system, calculating total payments, and printing notes and reports needed. Based on the test results it can be concluded that the system can display the stock of goods, can optimize the sales transaction process, and can display and print sales reports and suppliers. The shop owner stated that the application can help in checking the stock of books that are still available and facilitates the sales transaction process. The shop owner also does not need to calculate the total payment manually because the application has calculated the total payment.

Abstract (sommario):
This article charts the role of underground women’s and queer comics in the formation of local communities and liberation movements. It moves beyond an analysis of the comics themselves, considering the role that correspondence—between fans and editors, between artists and editors, between editors and publishers, between fans and artists—plays in crafting community through critical discourse, practical discussion, and commerce. It explores the tension between radical, sometimes anticapitalist organizing and the need of artists, publishers, and bookstore owners to make a living while supporting and being supported by their communities. Finally, it locates a tradition in the comics community of mutual support and encouragement, an “ethics of care,” that not only provided space for different and marginalized voices but saw in the production of comics a means by which to link individual and local struggles to emergent national liberation movements.

Abstract (sommario):
Zodiacus vitae, an influential philosophical poem by Marcello Palingenio Stellato, enjoyed popularity in Early Modern Europe, as evidenced by over sixty foreign editions, several translations and a 16th-century Polish-language paraphrase. Despite the latter being a testimony to Palingenius’work being read by the most prominent Renaissance humanists in Poland, the poem’s readership in Old Polish literature has remained largely unknown. The goal of this article is, therefore, to outline a new map of its readership in Early Modern Poland, Pomerania and Silesia, citing its presence in book inventories, public libraries, book collections and monastery libraries. Zodiacus circulated for instance in the 16th and 17th centuries among booksellers and bookstore owners in the most important printing centre in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth − Lviv (Piotr of Poznań, Baltazar Hybner) and Cracow (Helena Unglerowa, Franciszek Jakub Mercenich). It was no less popular in the private book collections of the townspeople, physicians, noblemen and aristocracy. Among the owners of the poem can be found for example: famous scholar and professor Jan Brożek, historian at the court of King Stephen Bathory –Giovanni Michele Bruto, poet Jan Gawiński, reformer of education and the mayor of Toruń−Henryk Stroband. Some light on the problem of the Zodiacus’popularity is also shed by an analysis of copious amounts of marginal notes in over seventy extant copies of Palingenius’work preserved in Polish libraries.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the work of bookstores and music stores in provincial cities. Their owners successfully adopted their manners of doing business of their colleagues from the two Russian capital cities and formed individual advertising mechanisms of their commercial operations that brought steady and stable incomes. At the present time, the characteristic features and structures of the small enterprises of that time period that were in serious competition with each other and worked to increase consumer demand and expand the market for their products, are of great interest to researchers. Among them is the Kashkin dynasty, which created a successful network of sales of books and music in Voronezh, Orel, Tver and other provincial cities. Its representatives, two brothers, Vladimir Dmitrievich and Lev Dmitrievich Kashkin, realized their potentials in detail in their commercial, creative, and social activities. The Kashkins’ bookstores and libraries epitomized their unique family experience, observed upon acquaintance with their special catalogues, which provided a distinct documentary testimony of the era. They contain valuable information about the structure and the content of the book and library funds, their quantitative and qualitative indicators, and their system of working with clients. The author of the article sees as being especially important the opening of new categories for sales of musical literature and musical instruments. In this context, this material has not yet appeared in the focus of scholarly research and appears for the first time from the position of comprehension the music publishing business in the Russian culture of the second half of the 19th and the early 20th centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
Tarnów’s land was inhabited by numerous landowners until 1945. Among them were representatives of the Cielecki family who came to Ryglice from Podole. The books of the Cielecki family were mainly collected in Porchowa and Hadyńkowce until the 1920s by Alfred Cielecki (1821-1892) – a wealthy landowner, a member of numerous Galician societies and a distinguished breeder and horse expert, and by his son Artur Karol Cielecki (1850-1930) Member of parliament, social activist, long-term president of the Association of Agricultural Castors. They created an interesting book collection. These books have been held in the Public Library in Tarnów since 1945 (and the time of the agricultural reform in Poland). This collection is dominated by historical and socio-political publications, in Polish language mostly, and with one type of provisional signs – the seals that the next bookstore owners preferred. There are also books published in series with interesting publishing luminaries. In the Ryglice collection, there are unique editions in both Polish and foreign languages available in a few centers in Poland only. For this reason, the collection is of significance not only for the history of the Tarnów region, but also as a valuable national heritage.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIt has become known that the Confucius Institute (CI) and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office (Qiaoban) are operated as tools of state-led mechanism, or Chinese statecraft with the ultimate goal of expanding China's cultural soft power. Following the direction, Xi Jinping has been pushing the notion of the “Chinese dream,” focusing on the realm of Chinese traditional culture and launching a new state-led mechanism. This article examines an emerging state-led mechanism known as “Chinese Homeland Bookstores” (CHBs), which was proposed by a provincial government-financed state-owned enterprise, and recently expanded to Thailand and various Mekong countries. I contend that the entities, such as CHBs and also CI and Qiaoban, are being extensively utilized as part of a larger state apparatus supporting the regime's Chinese traditional culture campaign. However, the CHB case and those of other government-led institutions illustrate how they combine nation-state work with market-oriented business strategies, to effectively promote Chinese culture “going out” with a focus on financial sustainability.

"In the present material, there was intended the presentation of some of the Romanian entrepreneurs who developed sole partnership businesses in Craiova, in the interwar period, as they were recorded in the archival and in different edited sources. These were owners of shops, department stores, bookstores, workshops, warehouses, factories, printing houses, restaurants, confectioneries, etc. It is well known that any city, in order to develop, needs commercial activity, all the more so since trade, or bartering activities are generating profit. It ought to be said that the mentioned period was not an easy one for the entrepreneurs from Craiova, being known that Romania's participation in the First World War led to the ruin or closure of some businesses, and the economic crisis affected to a large extent the majority of traders, entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the frequent changes of the political regimes, Romania's participation to the military actions of the World War II, had repercussions on the economic activity of Craiova. "

Graham, Lorie M., e Stephen M. McJohn. "Intellectual Property's First Sale Doctrine and the Policy Against Restraints on Alienation". Texas A&M Law Review 7, n. 3 (maggio 2020): 497–541. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/lr.v7.i3.1.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The first sale doctrine decouples intellectual property and physical property. Suppose, at an auction at Sotheby’s, someone bought a contemporary painting by Chuck Close. The buyer now owns the physical painting, but the copyright to the painting remains with the owner of the copyright—the painter Chuck Close or whomever Close may have transferred the copyright to. Absent the first sale doctrine, if the buyer either sold the painting or displayed it to the public, the buyer would potentially infringe the copyright in the painting. The copyright owner has the exclusive right to display copies (including the original, the first copy) of the painting to the public and to distribute copies to the public. However, the first sale doctrine provides that the owner of an authorized copy may display or distribute that particular copy without infringing. The distribution right and display right no longer apply; these rights are “exhausted.” Permission from the copyright owner is not required to resell copyrighted works or to display them. First sale permits a broad swath of activity. Used bookstores, libraries, swap fests, eBay, students reselling casebooks, and many more may rely on first sale to protect their distribution of copyrighted works. Museums, galleries, archives, bookstores, and more can likewise display their copies of copyrighted works without infringing under first sale. First sale (more commonly called “exhaustion” in patent law) also applies to patented products. Someone who buys a patented product (such as a pharmaceutical, computing device, or printer cartridge) can use or resell that product without infringing the patent, even though the patent owner has the rights to exclude others from using or selling the invention. First sale enables markets for resale or lease of patent products, from printer cartridges to airplanes. First sale has its limits. In copyright, it applies only to the rights to distribute and to display the work. The copyright owner also has the exclusive right to make copies, to adapt the work, and to perform the work publicly, which are not subject to first sale. The painting buyer would potentially infringe if the buyer made a copy of the painting or adapted it into another artwork, but the buyer could not infringe the performance right, because one cannot perform a painting. The owner of a copy of a musical work may infringe if she performs it in public, which is why bars need licenses to play copyrighted music, even using copies they have purchased. The owner of a copy of a movie may infringe if she adapted the movie, such as making a sequel—or even dubbing the movie in another language. In patent, first sale likewise would not authorize the purchaser of a product to make additional copies. Similarly, first sale in patent would authorize the buyer of a patented item to use it or resell it, but not to make another one. First sale is long-established, by statute in copyright and by judicial interpretation in patent. The underlying policy of first sale, however, has been unsettled. First sale can be seen to rest on either of two rationales. The first is a contract-based, gap-filler approach. If someone sells a painting, one would expect an implicit agreement that the buyer could display the painting or resell it, as both actions are customary with artworks. To simplify transactions, the rights to resell and display are automatically included in the transaction. The other justification is the policy against restraints on alienation, borrowed from the law of real property. Someone who sells property may not impose unreasonable restraints on the buyer’s ability to resell the property. As transplanted to intellectual property law, once a party voluntarily parts with a copy, she should no longer be able to control what the buyer does with it. Hence, her rights are “exhausted” in that particular copy. The underlying rationale is important for determining the extent of the first sale doctrine. If first sale is a gap-filler, then the parties could contract around it, agreeing that the property sold would not be subject to first-sale rights. If first sale is a policy-based bar against unreasonable restraints on alienation, then first sale is mandatory—it is not subject to the agreement of the parties but rather is the opposite: a limit on the enforceability of their agreement. Both strains can be seen in the case law. Two recent Supreme Court cases, however, decisively rested first sale on the restraints-against- alienation rationale, expressly rejecting the proposition that parties can contract around first sale. This Article explores the implications of those cases for the boundaries of first sale, focusing on two issues. First, California’s resale royalty law required that artists receive 5% of the proceeds on resale of their work. The Ninth Circuit held that the California statute was preempted by the first sale doctrine of federal copyright law. We conclude that, if first sale serves to prevent unreasonable restraints on alienation, such resale royalty statutes should be valid. Rather than an unreasonable restraint on alienation, they permit resale, imposing a modest burden for a purpose entirely consonant with copyright law: rewarding authors. Second, software sellers have long avoided first sale by characterizing software sales as mere licenses, while formally retaining ownership of the software after delivery to the buyer. Courts have enforced transactions according to the parties’ contract. We conclude, however, that such transactions, which are intended to prevent resale of software, should be characterized as sales in substance, triggering first-sale rights to resell the software, overriding the contractual restraint on alienation.

The conservative and church-going community rallied around members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) who objected to what they saw as an affront to the moral standards of the community and the dangers that pornography presented to children and families. The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce formed an organization with the acronym HOME, Help Our Moral Environment, to fight for the closure of the bookstore. HOME attracted support from the citizens of the valley and neighboring communities in Utah who volunteered to serve on picket lines near the store with signs denouncing pornography. Store owners asserted their right to free speech and kept the doors open while challenging a zoning ordinance in the courts that was passed by the City of Mesquite which prohibited such businesses. As the courts deliberated, picketing continued for twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for two and a half years. On March 27, 1996, in Las Vegas Federal District Court, Judge Phillip Pro ruled in favor of the City of Mesquite to close the offending business under the authority of its zoning ordinance.

The research was conducted from September 2018 to February 2019, starting from preparation to preparing the report. The sampling method in this study was to use the Total Sampling method with a number of samples taken as many as 100% of the members of two farmer groups namely Suka Maju farmer groups as many as 17 respondents and Tumou Tou farmer groups as many as 17 respondents. The total number of respondents was 34 farmers. The data used are primary data and secondary data. Primary data was collected by interviewing all respondents with the help of a list of questions prepared before. Secondary data was collected from documents owned by both farmer groups, local bookstores, the internet through google search engines in the form of books and “skripsi” related to the topic of this research, namely farmers' social capital. Data analysis was carried out descriptively which was presented in table form and then interpreted. The results showed that the elements of social capital namely norms, networks, beliefs, reciprocal relationships, and values have been able to improve the existence and cohesiveness of Suka Maju farmer groups because the social capital of Suka Maju farmer groups is very good compared to Tumou Tou farmer groups. Viewed from all sides, the Tani Suka Maju group has better social capital than the Tumou Tou farmer group. Thus to improve the existence and cohesiveness of Tumou Tou farmer group like Suka Maju farmer group, it is necessary to improve thequality of social capital as owned by farmer groups Suka Maju.*eprm*

The authors attempt the comprehensive study of developing publishing industry in the Turkestan region after accession to the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19-th century. The study is based on the periodicals, research papers, archival materials related to the period under study. The authors summarize information on the first printing houses, bookstores and their owners in the materials available from the rare book and manuscript collections of the National Library of Uzbekistan, the Fundamental Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Central State Archive of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The authors emphasize that despite private publishing houses and printing houses were then established in Turkestan, the book publications by government institutions, departments, scientific and cultural societies prevailed. The authors conclude that the enhancement of the publishing industry in the end of the 19-th century was stipulated by the increasing population demand for printed products, as well as by the increasing demand for printed advertising products owing to the growth of industry and trade. The authors describe the evolution of the book distribution system within the socio-economic and cultural processes in the regional in society. The authors argue that the book distribution in the region combined with the principles of entrepreneurship and enlightenment, while the involvement of the regional administration in the management of this industry was insignificant.

Abstract (sommario):
The author examines the demonstrations carried out by university students in Istanbul on December 4, 1945 and the raid on the printing operations of the pro-Soviet Tan newspaper, known as the Tan Raid, in light of U.S. State Department documents, namely the related fi les in National Archives Records Administration. The infl uence of the Tan Raid on Turkey’s international relations is discussed in the context of Turkish-American and Turkish-Soviet relations. The Raid is regarded as a signifi cant incident since it coincides with the post WW2 period when Turkey’s relations with the Soviet Union had already deteriorated due to Moscow’s demands to revise the Montreux Convention by 19th of March 1945. Furthermore, Turkish-American diplomatic contacts in the aftermath of the Raid show Washington’s perspective on policy towards Soviet Union, as U.S. offi cials advised a moderate line to their Turkish counterparts. On the other hand, preparations for the Raid seem highly controversial since Turkish government offi cials did not strongly condemn the event and the police did not intervene against the protestors despite of their violent actions towards Tan and some left leaning bookstores. The slogans during the demonstration show its anti-Soviet character, which Ankara denied in order to decrease tensions with the Soviets by arguing that it was Tan ’s owner, the Sertel couple to whom the anger was directed, not the Soviet Union. The intelligence obtained by diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, the meetings they conducted with Turkish politicians, their conclusions regarding the process leading up to the raid, and their opinions on Turkish-Soviet relations provide the background for the analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
In the territory of the Russian Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries, printing in Oriental languages became widespread. Several printing houses financed by influential Muslim merchants opened in Troitsk, Orenburg, Ufa, Kazan, St. Petersburg, and Tashkent. The printed books using Arabic script reached the Qazaq Steppe. This was due not only to the efforts of the Qazaqs, who published their works in various printing houses, but also to the activities of the Tatars. The article deals with the activities of Niyaz-Muhammad Suleymanov, a Siberian Tatar who distributed Islamic books printed in Arabic script in the Qazaq Steppe. Suleymanov wrote many works on the reforming of Islamic education, the need to learn Russian, and reading khutbah in Tatar. Besides, he was the publisher of many books in Tatar, Qazaq and Arabic. Suleymanov owned several bookstores in Petropavlovsk and Omsk. The book trade allowed Suleymanov to find means for a variety of activities. He was a participant of All-Russian Muslim congresses, and an imam of the Second Cathedral Mosque of Omsk from 1907 to 1916. Suleymanov closely contacted with Tatar and Qazaq intellectuals of the period, e.g., with a Qazaq writer and public figure Zhanuzak Zhanybekov and a Tatar scholar and the editor of the “Shura” magazine, Rizaetdin Fakhreddinov. Niyaz-Muhammad Suleymanov’s biography and the context of his activity allow us to study the specifics of the formation of the Islamic book culture in the Qazaq Steppe: the types of books that were favored, the areas of their distribution, how the content of these books influenced the social and political movement among Muslims, as well as the development of spiritual culture at large.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper focuses on the episode of the formation of Ivan Franko’s library. Franko was actively interested in books all his life, and his collection was a mobile organism: he followed the new editions, ordered catalogs from everywhere, and generously shared his books. The unique library has survived to this day as part of the writer’s archival collection. Both modern editions and old prints (which are rather numerous) retain evidence of their movements. Gift inscriptions, bookplates, stamps of institutions and organizations, notes and marks on the margins — all these pieces of evidence complement the information about Franko’s circle of communication and creative interests, being an important source for studying his biography. It is impossible to completely reconstruct the history of acquiring the books that form this memorial collection, but a number of facts give grounds for some conclusions on this issue. Franko’s unexpected visit to Kyiv in 1909 is described in many memoirs, but only D. Doroshenko, who accompanied the writer to the bookstores, briefly told what publications his companion was interested in, and which booksellers he met, naming several particular places they visited. The traces of these locations in the books from the collection may serve as proof that the writer brought them from his trip. Now working with Franko’s personal library, the author of the paper is trying to find out which books from Kyiv enriched Franko’s collection. The testimonies by D. Doroshenko, bookplates, ownership inscriptions and stamps, numbers of books assigned by the owner of the library, and other data were taken into account. Many editions of this collection have stamps or stickers of booksellers from different cities and countries, including those that Franko never visited. The writer’s archive also contains book advertisements and catalogs, as well as his correspondence with publishers and second-hand booksellers. Thus, generally linking the collection of Ivan Franko’s library to his travels proves to be not a very productive task.

Abstract (sommario):
Subject area: The sub field of academia that the case is designed to teach is small business development, entrepreneurship or women in business. Study level/applicability: This case is appropriate for graduate and post-graduate, MBA and executive education students focusing on entrepreneurship, small business development or women in business. Case overview This real-life case is based on interviews that took place with Kate Rogan, the co-founder of Love Books, and other stakeholders associated with the small bookselling business that is based in the suburb of Melville in Johannesburg. It describes how Rogan’s past influenced how she saw and was open to the opportunity; and how, through passion, commitment, dedication and stakeholder management, she created a business that brought meaning to her and others’ lives. Rogan’s vast experience in editing, publishing and radio influenced how she evaluated the bookstore opportunity. For the past 11 years, she focused on building a loyal customer base through knowing her customers, staying on top of current industry and market trends and constantly thinking about how she could add value through minimal financial outlay. COVID-19 further complicated her thinking about how to traditionally market and sell books to her client base. As the case concludes, Rogan wonders how to build upon the foundations of her successful bookshop and grow profitability while remaining true to her and the business’s values. Expected learning outcomes The case allows students to consider the key enablers for assessing entrepreneurial opportunities and drivers of small business growth. Following discussion and analysis of the case, students should be able to: explore how cognitive dynamics affect an entrepreneur’s evaluation of opportunities; analyze the case against the 4Cs (continuity, community, connection and command) of competitive business advantage; evaluate building blocks for sustainable business profitability; and assess and recommend different learnings for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. Subject code CSS 7: Management Science.
