Emslie, Anne. "Art and book : a commentary on artists' books". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50684.
Testo completoThesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The thesis investigates the contemporary practice of book art, examining in particular the manner in which it fits both into the tradition of the book and the tradition of art making. The thesis spans two volumes. Volume One discusses the phenomenon of the artist's book from three vantage points: the attempts to define it, the attempts to catalogue it and the attempts to interpret it. Volume Two is an artist's book and although it is part of the project I have set myself, it is not being submitted with the theoretical component of the MA dissertation, but as part of the practical component. (Briefly, one of the tasks it embarks upon is an examination of the phenomenon of thesis writing, as understood and endeavoured by myself in the production of the first volume - in this sense it is self-reflective. Another is an examination of some aspects of my attempts to make examples of artist's books, which includes an investigation of some of the recurrent themes and preoccupations of my work) Volume One is set out in three chapters. The first chapter pursues a definition of book art and the artist's book in order to draw some perimeters around the subject, and to build a picture of its nature. In the course of doing this, the ideas of some book artists and book art commentators are considered in an attempt to create a richer tapestry of understanding. In the next chapter some of the ways in which book art has been categorised are discussed. This is in order to more finely delineate the nature and scope of book art. It is also to bring some clarity to bear upon the different components and manifestations of a vast and sometimes confusing oeuvre. I then suggest a system of classification of my own which offers an adjacent model for investigating artists' books and the endeavour of book art. With the above model in place, I undertake a foray into the arena of interpretation. Here I suggest the suitability of adopting certain methodologies of interpretation that come from the field of contemporary literary studies in general, and the interpretation of poetry in particular. I draw comparisons between the book artist and the poet, and suggest that they occupy a similar territory of meaning making. In the course of laying out my arguments in the three chapters, I refer extensively to examples of artists' books in order to make particular points. Where I consider it apt, I draw upon my book art as a source of example. In this way, I am able to weave into the text some information and reflection about my own practice and concerns as a book artist.
Waar ek dit as gepas beskou, verwys ek, by wyse van illustrasie, na my eie boekkuns. Op hierdie manier is dit vir my moontlik om inligting en besinning oor my eie praktyk en pre-okkupasies as boekkunstenaar met die teks te verweef.

Testo completoThis thesis is about the use of E-books in higher education, specifically at Malmö University. The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes students have towards the use of E-books for scholarly purposes in higher education versus their printed counterparts. This study looks at student preferences in the use of E-books compared to printed books, along with the effects these media have on students reading habits. By discovering in which situations E-books or printed books are most beneficial, students can make informed decisions about which medium will benefit them the most. An online survey and recorded interviews were used as methods for collecting data, whichwas then compared to previously published studies related to this subject. Students were found to prefer the printed book for studying purposes, and it still remains as the main source for reading and analyzing longer passages of text. E-books, on the other hand, were found to be most advantageous when preparing research reports. This means that both media still have their place inhigher education, which is likely to continue in the foreseeable future.

Testo completoIn 2008 LeYa had the desire to grow in two different ways: gaining market share to competitor firms in the book publishing market; and develop a strategy for market size growth, benefiting from first mover advantage. At that time we were already catalyzing and collecting the benefits of dimension, either by using our enhanced negotiation power or through the exploration of available synergies from the acquisition of several firms. The Snack Books project was developed with the intent of maximizing the potential market of the industry, translating into one single objective: explore the market potential of Light Readers engaging them to the pleasures of reading. This was the main insight used in the development of ideas that could lead to the introduction of a new product. The only restriction of the project was the obvious necessity of using the core competence of a publishing company, the development of written contents, facilitating the connection between creators and consumers of written contents. Using the insights collected from an initial and exploratory research several concepts were developed and discussed. From these initial ideas one was highlighted as having the higher potential, Snack Books. This stage was followed by a quantitative research study with the aim of confirming the insights gathered from the exploratory research and data collection under product specifications, price and distribution channels. With those results we developed the marketing plan of Snack Books. Generally speaking we can define Snack Books as being a collection of titles which offer two pieces, one fictional and one non-fictional, the articulation between them is given by a common and general theme. The main attributes of Snack Books are the size (no more than 30 pages and 10.000 words which is equivalent to an average of 40 minutes reading), easiness (simple words; easy to understand narrative construction; plot easy to follow) and portability (10 x 14cm). Another core attribute is the distribution close to consumption occasions, therefore outside bookshops. To achieve this we designed a distribution channel whose core resource is the implementation of vending machines, favouring impulse purchase. The price is 2€ for all items of the collection, thanks to expectable high unit sales and low industrial costs. An integrated promotion plan will be deployed to get the attention of target customers based mainly on the use mass media, point-of-purchase material, trade promotions and institutional communication to all stakeholders.

Read a book, for the author, in the hope that readers can follow their own choreographed way, step by step guide the reader to understand the content they want to convey knowledge; But for readers to write the authors, for example, may need to browse quite a lot books, find the desired reference content, to complete the writing goals in the data exploration process is bound to spend a lot of time, and may not be able to find the right information. Therefore, we hope to find a solution to create a new kind of e-book mode, allowing users to create scenarios based on their experience with the experience of these cases it becomes a collection of knowledge manual that provides a solution to other users direction of the problem, and is determined by the user "how to use" knowledge, to the community to share knowledge, establish common goals book. This study proposes a society to establish e-book mode, allowing users to digitize paper several books, and in the form of a dictionary exists, as Reference Book; another user's experience to build a variety of use cases, it is a collection of these cases the knowledge manual, as User Book, Reference Book assist other users from being to find answers to your questions, and then record them on a user browsing behavior on the system, so can provide a more convenient, faster query. Experimental results show that the use of knowledge for the e-book designed to help users know the current reading position, avoiding lost reading direction, the use of User Book can help users solve problems and quickly find the right content, to improve data search efficiency and the joy of reading, thus enhancing the user's willingness to use.

Because of the increasing popularity of mobile devices, paper-based books and magazines have been gradually replaced by electronic books and magazines. The advancement of the Internet technology enables readers to have access to almost unlimited knowledge sources. Digital reading is considered an inevitable trend in the future. As paper-based books are replaced by e-books, the different carriers of books enable readers to acquire a reading experience distinct from previous experiences and also considerably influence the original design of books. The most direct influence is on the binding and cover design of books; this is because the design and concepts for binding paper-based books is no longer applicable to e-books. Therefore, this study determined whether the considerations and design ideas involved in the binding design for paper-based books should still be emphasized in this era of digitalization; this study also explored how the binding and cover design for paper-based books can be converted or adjusted to maintain the meaning and spirit produced by the original design. E-book and digital publication is a technique that has not been universally learned because of its short development history. In this study, a review of literature on e-reading and e-books as well as book design was conducted and experts from relevant fields were interviewed to obtain related operational data and trends observed in practice. Subsequently, the results derived from the interview data were analyzed and summarized. Using the results, we combined the application of multimedia technology with appropriate design performance and incorporated a book design, which itself invited “exploration, interaction, consideration, and touch.” The objective was to propose the concept of digital binding for e-books to serve as a reference for planning, designing, and publishing e-books in the future.

The main concept of the artistic creation theory “Travel Books” is to explore ways of expressing dynamic time and space through static media “Artists’ Books”, and to develop the special creative thinking and the presentation of works in consequence through the introspection of the duration and the move. Moreover, I proceed to sum up and put things in order by writing this thesis. This article is presented with the following chapters: The first chapter, “Introduction”, is “creative motive” and “background exploring”. Chapter two, the main concept of the thesis based on “Travel Books”, analyzes the meanings of the title, and is compared to the origin and the foundation of the personal creation. Chapter three, “Artists’ Books”, is the exploration of painting and drawing, printmaking and monoprints, collage, bookbinding, sequential art, and artists’ books. Furthermore, it particularizes several artists creation achievement to be the reference object of the bibliographies. The fourth chapter, features the compositions, the colors, the bindings of blank sketchbooks, the space, the concept of the display in my solo exhibition, and the topic of each artwork. “Conclusion” reorganizes for the research attainment of this creation elaboration and relates the development and expectation in the future.
