Total-reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, abbreviated as TXRF, is known for its high sensitivity down to the low pg-level or sub-ppb level, respectively, and its wide dynamic range of about three to four orders of magnitude (Yoneda and Horiuchi, 1971, Wobrauschek and Aiginger, 1980; Knoth and Schwenke, 1978 and 1980, Aiginger and Wobrausohek, 1985, Michaelis et al., 1985, Prange, 1987). Meanwhile several laboratories have purchased commercially available TXRF spectrometers and have started to report favourable about this technique. Applications have been reported from various disciplines: These are estuarine and marine water quality management and research, air pollution studies, mineralogical investigations, biology and medicine (Prange, 1987, Prange et al, 1985; Prange and Kremling, 1985, Prange et al., 1987, Stöβel and Prange, 1985, Michaelis, 1986, Ketelsen and Knöchel, 1985, Leland et al., 1987, von Bohlen et al., 1987, Junge et al., 1983, Hentschke et al., 1985, Hentschke et al., 1985, Gerwinski and Goetz, 1987, von Bohlen et al., 1987), In spite of its close kinship to conventional EDXRF , TXRF is quite different with respect to operation and performance and provides complementary capabilities.

Abstract (sommario):

Der Beitrag beschreibt die Restaurierung eines kleinen, typischen Oberpfälzer Bauernhauses, welches in seiner ersten Bauphase um 1730 zunächst als Fachwerkbau errichtet und 1834, im Zuge seiner Erweiterung durch nachträglichen Mauerwerksbau, "versteinert" wurde. Der Richtung Norden angebaute Stadel diente bis zur Sanierung traditionell als Lager- und Arbeitsraum. Er wurde im Zuge der Sanierung komplett zurückgebaut und wieder in seinem typischen schlichten Erscheinungsbild als Holzbau errichtet. Von großer Bedeutung für die einzigartige Optik der Innenräume sind die alten Putze, die historischen Innentüren, Fachwerke sowie die hausprägenden Fenster- und Türöffnungen und Verformungen der Wände. Die bauzeitlichen Putze konnten erhalten werden, neue wurden als Kalkputz - handwerklich dem Mauerwerk folgend - aufgebracht. Die historische Balken-Bohlen-Decke wurde freigelegt und restauriert, lediglich die maroden Köpfe der Balken-Bohlen durch neues Fichtenholz ersetzt. Mit Leinöl und Kalkfarben hat man die historischen Innentüren aufgearbeitet. Für die umfassende Sanierung wurden die Bauherren mit dem Bayerischen Staatspreis 2017 für die Erhaltung der Baukultur im ländlichen Raum ausgezeichnet. Das historische Rathaus in Goslar ist ein verwinkeltes bauliches Ensemble mit einer langen Baugeschichte, deren Anfänge bis ins Mittelalter zurückreichen, als Goslars Aufstieg zur Hansestadt und Freien Reichsstadt durch den Bergbau begründet wurde. Im Obergeschoss des mittleren Baus liegt das Sitzungszimmer. Als »Haus im Haus« bestehen hier die Längswände und die tonnenartige Überwölbung aus kräftigen Bohlen. Die Bohlentonne ist eine außergewöhnliche Konstruktion von hohem historischem Wert. Sie ist Baukonstruktion und Bildträger. Für die statische Sicherung wurde in enger Abstimmung mit den Fachbeteiligten ein detailliert angepasstes Konzept entwickelt, wobei die Sicherung die hybride Tragwirkung aus Bogen und Biegetragverhalten ausnutzte. Dieses kombinierte Tragverhalten wurde jeweils lokal unterstützt. Anschließend erfolgten noch restauratorische Arbeiten auf der Tonneninnenseite. In the article “Consonance preferences within an unconventional tuning system,” Friedman and colleagues (2021) examine consonance ratings of a large range of dyads and triads from the Bohlen-Pierce chromatic just (BPCJ) scale. The study is designed as a replication of a recent paper by Bowling, Purves, and Gill (2018), which proposes that perception of consonance in dyads, triads, and tetrads can be predicted by their harmonic similarity to human vocalisations.In this commentary, we would like to correct some interpretations regarding Friedman et al.’s (2021) discussion of our paper (Smit, Milne, Dean, & Weidemann, 2019), as well as express some concerns regarding the statistical methods used. We also propose a stronger emphasis on the use of, as named by Friedman et al., composite models as a range of recent evidence strongly suggests that no single acoustic measure can fully predict the complex experience of consonance.

Abstract (sommario):

KNOWLEDGE OF MUSICAL RULES AND STRUCTURES HAS been reliably demonstrated in humans of different ages, cultures, and levels of music training, and has been linked to our musical preferences. However, how humans acquire knowledge of and develop preferences for music remains unknown. The present study shows that humans rapidly develop knowledge and preferences when given limited exposure to a new musical system. Using a nontraditional, unfamiliar musical scale (Bohlen-Pierce scale), we created finite-state musical grammars from which we composed sets of melodies.After 25-30 min of passive exposure to the melodies, participants showed extensive learning as characterized by recognition, generalization, and sensitivity to the event frequencies in their given grammar, as well as increased preference for repeated melodies in the new musical system. Results provide evidence that a domain-general statistical learning mechanism may account for much of the human appreciation for music.

Prior research has amply documented that happy music tends to be faster, louder, higher in average pitch, more variable in pitch, and more staccato in articulation, whereas sad music tends to be slower, lower, less variable, and more legato in articulation. However, the bulk of existing studies are either correlational or allow these expressive cues to covary freely, thereby making it difficult to confirm the causal influence of a given cue. To help address this gap, we experimentally assessed whether the average height (F0) of a pitch gamut independently impacts the perceived emotional expression of melodies derived from the gamut. Study participants rated the perceived happiness/sadness of a set of isochronous and semi-random tone sequences derived from the Bohlen-Pierce scale, an unconventional scale based on pitch intervals that do not appear in common practice music. Results were consistent with the notion that higher average pitch height communicates happiness and/or that lower pitch height communicates sadness. Moreover, they suggested that the effect is: (1) sufficiently robust to be detected using rudimentary melodies based on an unconventional musical scale; and, (2) independent of interval size.

Die Entwicklung der Forschungen über die Wikinger und frühmittelalterliche Periode auf dem Gebiet von Dänemark erlaubte die ausreichende Anzahl der Angaben zu sammeln, die ermöglichen, eine Rekonstruktionsprobe der Formen vom Holzbauwesen zu unternehmen. Die Forschungen der Dorfbesiedlung waren Grund zu Erwägungen über typische Bebauungsformen, die aus einem oder mehreren Höfen bestanden. Mehr-Höfe-Bebauung charakterisierte die Anwesenheit der kleinen und grossen Häuser, die vielleicht zu bedeutsamen Landsleuten und Vorsteher gehörten. Eine spezifische Form der dänischen Besiedlung waren sog. runde Burgen von auf anderen Gebieten nicht wiederholbaren Planung, aber mit den für nördlichwestliches Europa typischen bogenförmig gestalteten Häusern. Es gehören 3 Burgen dazu: Trelleborg, Aggersborg und Fyrkat. Vom Anfang des X. Jahrhunderts beginnen sich auf dem Gebiet von Dänemark frühstädtische Zentren wie z.В Haithabu, Ärhus, Ribe, Viborg zu entwickeln. In der Wikinger und frühmittelalterlichen Zeit herrschen in Dänemark grundsätzlich 2 Konstruktionstypen. Traditionell ist ein Typ des Hallenhauses von geraden oder bogenförmigen Wänden in der Flechtwerk, Bohlen- und Palisadekonstruktion. Kleine Objekte hatten eher wirtschaftlich-industrielle Funktionen. Es fällt auch ziemlich grosse Anzahl der Erdbauten auf, die auch in frühstädtischen Zentren auftreten. Zu unterstreichen ist die Tatsache, dass wie bisher, auf dem Gebiet von Dänemark keine Kommkonstruktionen festgelegt wurden.

Recently, Bowling, Purves, and Gill (2018a), found that individuals perceive chords with spectra resembling a harmonic series as more consonant. This is consistent with their vocal similarity hypothesis (VSH), the notion that the experience of consonance is based on an evolved preference for sounds that resemble human vocalizations. To rule out confounding between harmonicity and familiarity, we extended Bowling et al.’s (2018a) procedure to chords from the unconventional Bohlen-Pierce chromatic just (BPCJ) scale. We also assessed whether the association between harmonicity and consonance was moderated by timbre by presenting chords generated from either piano or clarinet samples. Results failed to straightforwardly replicate this association; however, evidence of a positive correlation between harmonicity and consonance did emerge across timbres following post hoc exclusion of chords containing intervals that were particularly similar to conventional equal-tempered dyads. Supplementary regression analyses using a more comprehensive measure of harmonicity confirmed its positive association with consonance ratings of BPCJ chords, yet also showed that spectral interference independently contributed to these ratings. In sum, our results are consistent with the VSH; however, they also suggest that a composite model, incorporating both harmonicity as well as spectral interference as predictors, would best account for variance in consonance judgments.

Abstract (sommario):

Leptobotia citrauratea (Nichols, 1925), a loach species, originally described from Dongting Lake, was recently rehabilitated, based on the examination of the holotype and non-topotypical specimens. Several field surveys conducted from 2016 to 2019 in Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Hunan Provinces, P.R. China, yielded many specimens of Leptobotia which were initially identified as L. citrauratea. Molecular and morphological analyses of these specimens demonstrated that two distinct species are involved. One was identified as L. citrauratea, represented by specimens from both the Poyang and Dongting Lake (type locality) systems in Jiangxi and Hunan Provinces, and the other species is described as L. brachycephala, represented by specimens from the Ou-Jiang and Qu-Jiang, two coastal rivers of Zhejiang Province, China. Leptobotia brachycephala resembles L. citrauratea and L. micra in having a row of orange dots or an orange stripe along the dorsal mid-line of the body, extending from the nape to the caudal-fin base – a unique character in Leptobotia. Leptobotia brachycephala differs from L. citrauratea and L. micra Bohlen & Šlechtová, 2017, in caudal-fin shape and pelvic-fin insertion and proportional measurements including caudal-fin length, head length, predorsal length and anal-fin length. Its species status was further corroborated by position in a molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on the mitochondrial cyt b gene and its minimum uncorrected p-distance (2.9%) from congeneric species.

Physiol.82(2): 460–468, 1997.—Arterial vessel responses to sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and acetylcholine (ACh) were measured in the spinotrapezius muscle of sedentary (Sed) and treadmill-trained (Tr) rats to determine whether these endothelium-dependent (ACh) and -independent (SNP) mechanisms contribute to the training-induced increase in functional vasodilation previously observed. Control and maximal vessel diameters were similar between Sed and Tr. After 8 wk of training, functional dilation (2-, 4-, and 8-Hz contractions) was enhanced in all orders of vessels studied [terminal feed artery (FA), largest arterioles (1A), and intermediate-sized arterioles (2A)], but responses to SNP were increased only in FA. Responses to ACh were not significantly increased in any vessel order. After 16 wk of training, functional dilation had regressed in Tr such that only the FA response to 4 Hz was significantly elevated relative to Sed. However, the FA and 1A responses to SNP were significantly greater in Tr than in Sed, as were the 1A and 2A responses to ACh. These results show a dissociation of functional dilation and SNP- or ACh-mediated responses, as well as age-dependent interactions, a time-dependent progression, and vessel order specificity in the adaptations to training.

Die Studie untersucht die Rezeption des Thukydides und deren geschichtspolitische Funktion in Dror Zahavis Biopic Das Geheimnis der Freiheit (2020), das vom Scheitern der 1974 von Berthold Beitz bei Golo Mann in Auftrag gegebenen Biographie über Alfried Krupp v. Bohlen und Halbach erzählt. In dem Film werden – so die These – bundesrepublikanische Kontroversen über Modi des Umgangs mit dem Nationalsozialismus (re-)inszeniert. Dieses Thema besitzt wegen gesellschaftlicher Wandlungsprozesse auch in der Gegenwart, in der sich die Frage nach der Stellung des Nationalsozialismus im Geschichtsbewusstsein neu stellt, eine hohe gesellschaftsdidaktische Relevanz. Als zentrale Argumentationsfigur der Protagonisten im Film dient ein zum Sprichwort mutierter Satz aus dem Epitaphios des Perikles (Thuk. 2,43,4). Die Untersuchung weist nach, wie der Film bei der Nutzung des Zitats in Bezug auf Beitz’ Biographie eine Deutungstradition fortschreibt, die Berthold Beitz selbst begründet hat und die von seinem Biographen Joachim Käppner und Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck in das kulturelle Gedächtnis der Bundesrepublik eingeführt worden ist. Es zeigt sich, dass Das Geheimnis der Freiheit seine geschichtspolitischen Ziele nur durch eine fundamentale Manipulation am Wortlaut des Thukydides erreicht, damit jedoch seine erkenntnistheoretischen Prämissen und sein Plädoyer für Professionalität im Umgang mit der Geschichte konterkariert. Der Name des Thukydides, dessen Autorität der Film als historiographische Instanz in Anspruch nimmt, wird so zu einem Etikett ohne Substanz. Durch die unsachgemäße Berufung auf sein Werk werden überdies effektivere, in der deutschen Geschichtskultur angelegte Zugänge zur Debatte über die künftige Bedeutung der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit blockiert. Perspektiven für eine konstruktive Rezeption des Thukydides im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs über die Geschichte sieht der Aufsatz im Verzicht auf das Konzept einer historia magistra vitae, das auf der Einebnung von Alteritäten zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart fußt, sowie in der Nutzung des Reflexionspotentials, das Thukydides’ Darstellung bietet und das auch in seinem „Methodenkapitel“ (1,20-3) eingefordert wird. Zumindest auf diese Weise besitzt Thukydides eine orientierungsstiftende Aktualität für die Bundesrepublik.

Abstract (sommario):

Substituting fossil-based production methods with methods utilizing renewable resources is experiencing growing interest. Incorporating intermittent renewable electricity into such processes is highly desirable, especially for energy storage purposes. In this context, electrocatalytic conversion of renewable raw materials into platform chemicals is an important approach. Biogenic raw materials can be converted into platform chemicals through electrocatalysis, which can then be used in power-to-X-to-Y processes to generate a range of products. One notable example of this approach is the electrochemical conversion of CO2 into formic acid, which has numerous applications in the chemical, textile, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries [1, 2]. Utilization of CO2-based formate as a microbial substrate is a fascinating research topic that expands the range of possible products. The work presented here focuses on optimizing a compatible interface between efficient electrochemical processs and biotechnology, by identifying key factors, including the choice of catalyst, electrolyte, electrochemical setup, and formate production rate. This study also involves testing of an electrochemical microreactor for the scalable production of formate from CO2. Our results show that formate concentrations of up to 3 mol L-1 can be achieved in a bio-compatible buffer electrolyte using an optimized electrochemical process at high current densities. Additionally, this research successfully demonstrates the biochemical utilization of electrochemically produced CO2-based formate in coupled electro-biochemical processes. The developed process is a sustainable and efficient method for producing value-added products from CO2 and renewable electric energy, contributing to bridging the gap between electrochemical and biological processes. Dieser Beitrag stellt die Ergebnisse zur Untersuchung der Reproduzierbarkeit des Optimierungsverfahrens Evolutionsstrategie (ES) am Beispiel des funkenerosiven Bohrens vor. Dazu wurden zwei ES-Typen untersucht. Als Elektrodenwerkstoffe kamen Messing für das Werkzeug und für das Werkstück gehärteter Stahl zum Einsatz. Im Ergebnis konnte die Erosionsdauer reproduzierbar um 37 % verringert werden. Dieser Nachweis bildet die Grundlage für den industriellen Einsatz der Evolutionsstrategie beim funkenerosiven Bohren.   This article describes the results of the investigation on the reproducibility of the optimization method of evolution strategy (ES), exemplified by electrical-discharge drilling. Two types of ES were examined. The electrode materials used were brass for the tool and hardened steel for the workpiece. The erosion duration could be reduced by 37 % in a reproduceable manner. This verification is the basis for the industrial application of the ES for the optimization of electrical discharge machining.

Abstract (sommario):

Three major acidic proteins of bovine seminal plasma, BSP-A1, BSP-A2 and BSP-A3, were purified to homogeneity, by employing fast protein liquid chromatography, gel filtration and h.p.l.c. The proteins were purified on the basis of their stimulatory effect on the basal release of gonadotropins by rat anterior-pituitary cells in culture. All three proteins migrated as distinct single bands in the presence or absence of 2-mercaptoethanol in SDS/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. Their Mr values were estimated to be between 15,000 and 16,500 by SDS/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. Similar Mr estimates were obtained when they were subjected to gel filtration on a calibrated column of Sephadex G-75 equilibrated in 0.05 M-acetic acid, pH 3.0. However, BSP-A1 and BSP-A2 were eluted as aggregated molecules (Mr 60,000-120,000) during gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 equilibrated in 0.05 M-NH4HCO3, pH 8.5, or phosphate buffer, pH 7.0, containing 0.15 M-NaCl. In the presence of 8 M-urea both BSP-A1 and BSP-A2 were eluted at positions corresponding to Mr values of 17,000-20,000. BSP-A1 and BSP-A2 had an identical amino acid composition, which differed largely from that of BSP-A3. All three proteins contained aspartic acid as the N-terminal residue, and cysteine was identified as the C-terminal residue. BSP-A1 and BSP-A2 are glycoproteins containing galactosamine, sialic acid and neutral sugars, but BSP-A3 did not contain any covalently attached sugars. Whereas BSP-A2 and BSP-A3 were eluted unadsorbed, BSP-A1 bound to wheat-germ lectin-Sepharose 6MB and could be eluted by the competing sugar N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Treatment of BSP-A1 and BSP-A2 with trypsin resulted in complete loss of gonadotropin-release activity, but BSP-A3 retained full activity. Antibody raised against BSP-A1 did not cross-react with BSP-A3, or vice versa. All these properties indicated marked structural differences between BSP-A3 and BSP-A1 (or BSP-A2). On the basis of amino acid composition it was concluded that BSP-A1, BSP-A2 and BSP-A3 are the same as the gonadostatins [Esch, Ling, Bohlen, Ying & Guillemin (1983) Biochem. Biophys. Res. In diesem Beitrag werden die Bohrprobleme sowie ausgewählte Ergebnisse von Bohrversuchen bezüglich auftretender Zerspankräfte, erzeugter Bohrungsdurchmesser und des Werkzeugverschleißes aufgezeigt.

Bohler angle and the crucial angle of Gissane are used on the evaluation of calcaneus fractures. However, few authors have described the variation of the angles when the calcaneus is growing. In this study, Bohler angle and the crucial angle of Gissane in paediatric population were measured using lateral foot radiographs of 429 patients, from 0 to 16 years of age. The control group was composed of 70 adult patients. The sample had a mean Bohler angle of 35.4° ± 5.9° and a mean crucial angle of Gissane of 110.5° ± 7.4°. The greater mean difference was identified for Bohler angle (8°) in the age group of 5 to 8 years (39.6° ± 5.7°) and for the crucial angle of Gissane (5°-6°) in the age group of 0 to 4 years (115.8° ± 7.3) ( P < .05). The influence of the ossification centres on the geometry of the calcaneus across age groups makes Bohler angle and the crucial angle of Gissane higher in young children. The increase in Bohler angle points out the relative development of the posterior facet in young children and the importance of the reconstruction of the posterior facet height in the intra-articular calcaneus fractures. The name Cypselea meziana was originally published by Müller (1908: 72) and recently transferred to the genus Sesuvium Linnaeus (1759: 1058) as S. mezianum (Müller 1908: 72) Bohley & G. Kadereit in Bohley et al. (2017: 138). This is an endemic Paraguayan species, represented by creeping perennial herbs, rooted at the nodes, that grows in salty soils (Bohley et al. 2017). Morphologically, S. mezianum displays a unique feature in comparison with the other perennial Sesuvium species, i.e. 3 stamens (vs. 5 or more).
