Cornelio Musso (1511-1574), obispo de Bitonto, fue la persona elegida para abrir el Concilio de Trento (1545-1563). Sus sermones en toscano alcanzaron una notable difusión en la Edad Moderna. Sin embargo, solo conocemos dos traducciones al castellano durante la época: una de ellas inédita. En este trabajo indagaremos sobre los orígenes de este manuscrito y las razones por las que nunca fue publicado por su propietario, el I conde de Gondomar (1567-1626).

Abstract (sommario):

This article investigates how extremely adverse climatic and weather conditions in early modern southern Italy played a part in disrupting social coexistence among groups and individuals of different confessions and beliefs in what until then had been top-down sanctioned or tolerated multi-confessional communities. It focuses on the dramatic fate of the Waldensian colonies in Calabria and Apulia, and the little-studied case of witchcraft panic that broke out in the town of Bitonto in 1593. By examining different ways of dealing with environmental crises (rogatory processions, apocalyptic scapegoating, witchcraft panics), the article contributes to a history of intolerance from the 'inside out'.

The aim of the research was to verify the applicability of microsatellite (SSR) markers in High Resolution Melting (HRM) analysis for the identification of the olive cultivars used in the “Terra di Bari” PDO extra virgin olive oil. A panel of nine cultivars, widespread in Apulia region, was tested with seventeen SSR primer pairs and the PCR products were at first analysed with a Genetic Analyzer automatic sequencer. An identification key was obtained for the nine cultivars, which showed an unambiguous discrimination among the varieties constituting the “Terra di Bari” PDO extra virgin olive oil: Cima di Bitonto, Coratina, and Ogliarola. Subsequently, an SSR based method was set up with the DCA18 marker, coupled with HRM analysis for the distinction of the Terra di Bari olive oil from non-Terra di Bari olive oil using different mixtures. Thus, this analysis enabled the distinction and identification of the PDO mixtures. Hence, this assay provided a flexible, cost-effective, and closed-tube microsatellite genotyping method, well suited to varietal identification and authentication analysis in olive oil.

RiassuntoNel corso del Medioevo lo zafferano era una delle spezie più utilizzate in diversi campi e godeva di un notevole interesse nei commerci internazionali. L’Italia era uno dei principali produttori in Europa e la coltivazione era presente in diverse aree della Penisola: in Toscana e in Abruzzi si producevano le qualità più pregiate, ma la crococoltura era praticata anche in Lombardia, Umbria, Marche e Puglia. In quest’ultima regione, secondo centro nel Regno di Napoli, lo zafferano trovava spazio soprattutto nel Salento, ma era coltivato anche in Terra di Bari. Sebbene inferiore come qualità rispetto allo zima abruzzese, lo zima delle Puglie, tra XV e XVI secolo, aveva una sua collocazione sui mercati europei, essendo richiesto da mercanti tedeschi, veneziani e fiorentini. Nel presente contributo si vuole fornire una disanima della produzione e del commercio della spezia in Terra di Bari, argomento poco affrontato dalla ricerca storica, utilizzando fonti diverse, in particolare alcune pratiche della mercatura tedesche e veneziane del Cinquecento. Si presenteranno due casi di studio: Bitonto per la seconda metà del XV secolo e Bisceglie per il XVI, impiegando notizie tratte da fonti inedite. Da ultimo l’attenzione sarà posta sugli aspetti fiscali collegati allo zafferano e al suo commercio. AbstractProduction and Trade of Saffron in «Terra di Bari» between the 15th and 16th Century. During the Middle Ages, saffron was one of the most used spices in various fields and enjoyed considerable interest in international trade. Italy was one of the main producers in Europe and cultivation was present in several areas of the peninsula: the finest qualities were produced in Tuscany and Abruzzi, but crococulture was also practiced in Lombardy, Umbria, Marche and Apulia. In the latter region, the second center in the Kingdom of Naples, saffron found space above all in Salento, but it was also cultivated in Terra di Bari. Although inferior in quality to the Abruzzese zima, the Apulian zima, between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, had its place on European markets, being requested by German, Venetian and Florentine merchants. This paper aims to provide an overview about production and trade of the spice in Terra di Bari, a subject that has not been dealt with in historical research, using different sources, such us some German and Venetian trading practices (pratiche mercantili) of the sixteenth century. Two case studies will be presented with the towns of Bitonto, for the fifteenth century, and of Bisceglie, for the end of the sixteenth century, using information taken from unpublished notarial deeds. Finally, attention will be paid to the tax aspects related to saffron and its trade.

Abstract (sommario):

Teodorico Borgognoni was born in Lucca in 1205 and was appointed bishop of Bitonto and Cervia in 1262 and 1270. Following his father, he learned the art of surgery and collected relevant recipes in his most important work, entitled Cyrurgia seu filia principis. Among the disciplines reported in this work, the most interesting and innovative is anesthesia. The recipes in this field contribute to Borbognoni’s consideration as the forerunner of modern anesthesia. Such recipes have been reported in other manuscripts from the Middle Ages, like Manuscript No. 1939. In the present work, we investigate the traditional preparations handed down in this manuscript, focusing on type of preparation and botanical ingredients. The results highlight that exploited ingredients can be divided into three groups: the first comprises plants already known for their narcotic effects, the second includes ingredients acting as an adjuvant for absorption or reducing the metabolism, and the last group includes ingredients not associated with biological activity to explain their presence in anesthetic recipes. This third group is of particular interest for future biological investigations. Our goal is to rekindle attention to the work of Teodorico Borgognoni on traditional preparation for anesthetic purposes: a topic often underestimated by ethnobotanical surveys.

Abstract (sommario):

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a multifactorial intestinal disorder characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation. The etiology of IBD is still unclear, although genetic, environmental and host factors have been associated to the disease. Extra-virgin olive oil (EVO) is a central component of the Mediterranean diet and it decreases chronic inflammation by interfering with arachidonic acid and NF-κB signaling pathways. Specifically, the different components of EVO are able to confer advantages in terms of health in their site of action. For instance, oleic acid displays a protective effect in liver dysfunction and gut inflammation, whereas phenolic compounds protect colon cells against oxidative damage and improve the symptoms of chronic inflammation in IBD. Given the biological properties of EVO, we investigated whether its administration is able to confer protection in a mouse model of dextrane sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. Four EVO cultivars from the Apulian Region of Italy, namely Ogliarola (Cima di Bitonto), Coratina, Peranzana and Cima di Mola, respectively, were used. Administration of EVO resulted in reduced body weight loss in our colitis model. Furthermore, mice treated with Ogliarola, Coratina and Cima di Mola EVO displayed a reduction of rectal bleeding and IL-1β, TGFβ, IL-6 gene expression levels. Furthermore, Ogliarola, Coratina and Peranzana EVO administration ameliorated intestinal permeability and histopathological features of inflammation. Our data further validate the well-known positive effects of EVO supplementation in promoting human health and suggest the bona fide contribution of EVO in preventing onset and reducing progression of intestinal inflammation.

We introduce the notion of bitonic algebras as a generalization of dual BCCalgebras, and define the notion of (r,l)-derivations, (l,r)-derivations and generalized (r,l) and (l,r)-derivations on the bitonic algebras. Then we study the properties of the derivations and the generalized derivations on the bitonic algebras and the commutative bitonic algebras. Finally, we show that every generalized derivation of commutative bitonic algebras is a derivation.

With the deep study in this work, we introduce the concept of filters of a bitonic algebra A. We study some fundamental structures of such determined filters. We also focus on features of filters with respect to homomorphisms. With the help of the idea of upper sets, we investigate basic ideas of filters in a bitonic algebra, and we also state some important theorems related to them. We obtain some relations between filters of bitonic algebras and upper sets. We obtain an equivalent condition of the filters with the help of the notion of upper sets.

O coletivo Bitonga Travel, criado em São Paulo no ano de 2018, busca fortalecer o protagonismo das mulheres negras no turismo, além de incentivá-las e auxiliá-las através de uma rede de apoio e troca de experiências. Esta iniciativa ocorre porque a figura da mulher turista tem sido representada como uma pessoa branca, enquanto a pessoa negra é vista como uma trabalhadora que atua nos bastidores ou em atividades subalternas. Este artigo pretende entender os desafios enfrentados pelas mulheres negras do coletivo Bitonga Travel enquanto turistas e as discussões sobre racismo e gênero se fazem importantes. Foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa com a aplicação de questionários com 35 mulheres e a realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas com 03 mulheres, das 116 mulheres negras participantes da Bitonga Travel. Foi possível traçar um perfil dessas mulheres e perceber que o racismo, o machismo e o sexismo são problemas presentes nos relatos dessas viajantes. Portanto, é de extrema importância pensar em uma atividade turística mais inclusiva e que promova estratégias para o combate ao racismo, ao machismo e ao sexismo.

An irreversible inhibitor of S-adenosyl-L-methionine decarboxylase (AdoMetDC), 5′-([(Z)-4-amino-2-butenyl]methylamino)-5′-deoxyadenosine (MDL 73811), was found to cure Trypanosoma brucei brucei and multidrug-resistant T. b. rhodesiense infections in mice [Bitonti, Byers, Bush, Casara, Bacchi, Clarkson, McCann & Sjoerdsma (1990) Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 34, 1485-1490]. Doses of this drug which resulted in a rapid clearance of parasites from T. b. brucei-infected rats resulted in plasma levels of 50-60 microM-MDL 73811 and an intratrypanosomal MDL 73811 concentration of 1.9 mM within 10 min of administration [Byers, Bush, McCann & Bitonti (1991) Biochem. J. 274, 527-533[. Based on this finding we speculated that MDL 73811, which is an adenosine analogue, is a substrate for the trypanosome active purine transport system. We now report evidence that supports this hypothesis. MDL 73811 uptake by T. b. brucei in vitro was time- and temperature-dependent and was saturable over a time course in which MDL 73811 metabolism was undetectable, suggesting that MDL 73811 uptake is a transport-mediated phenomenon. Inhibition of MDL 73811 uptake by purine nucleosides is consistent with the drug being a substrate for the trypanosome purine transport system. The accumulation of MDL 73811 by cultured L1210 mouse leukaemia cells was significantly less than by trypanosomes exposed to the same pharmacologically relevant concentrations of MDL 73811. Given that the half-life of MDL 73811 in the plasma of rats and mice is approx. 10 min, it seems likely that the existence of a highly active parasite transport system for MDL 73811 is crucial for the sensitivity of trypanosomes towards MDL 73811 in vivo, and that the absence of active transport of MDL 73811 by the host's cells may play a role in the selectivity of this drug.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper puts forward an improved dynamic programming algorithm for bitonic TSP and it proves to be correct. Divide the whole loop into right-and-left parts through analyzing the key point connecting to the last one directly; then construct a new optimal sub-structure and recursion. The time complexity of the new algorithm is O(n2) and the space complexity is O(n); while both the time and space complexities of the classical algorithm are O(n2). Experiment results showed that the new algorithm not only reduces the space requirement greatly but also increases the computing speed by 2-3 times compared with the classical algorithm.

Abstract This study presents new data on pitch accent alignment in Sardinian, a Romance language spoken in Italy. We propose that what has been described as “stress shift” in encliticization processes is not a change in the word level stress, but variation in the association of the pitch accent. Our claim is that word level stress remains in situ, and the falling tune which our data exhibit can be interpreted as a bitonal pitch accent (HL*) associated with the entire verb + enclitic unit: the starred tone is associated with the rightmost metrically prominent syllable, and the leading tone is associated with the word-level stressed syllable. The research questions we address are twofold: (i) how are the landing sites of the two tonal targets phonetically identified; (ii) how are the phonetic facts reconciled with prosodic structure.

Abstract (sommario):

In order to deepen our contemporary knowledge about the Romanesque cathedral of Dubrovnik, it is of utmost importance to turn to the archaeological remains and the documented material evidence in order to establish its ground plan. On the basis of the ground plan and in combination with the way the Cathedral was depicted in the art works produced during the period from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, while also taking into account the contemporary written sources, we can propose a reconstruction of the Romanesque Cathedral together with a number of architectural features which have not been preserved. The Cathedral was an aisled basilica with a semi-circular apse which protruded at its east end. The nave was separated from the two aisles by means of arcades consisting of six piers resting on rectangular bases. The piers carried the vaults and these, in turn, supported the galleries above the aisles and the roof of the basilica. Such an arrangement was recorded by Diversis and Casola in the fifteenth century. In all likelihood, the two buttresses on the façade and eight more on each lateral wall were added later. At the top, the buttresses were connected by semi-circular arches and an exterior gallery existed above them. This gallery was connected to the one at the back of the church, creating thus an ambulatory which enabled the circumambulation of the basilica. This feature was mentioned by Casola and can be seen, to a certain degree, on the triptych painted by Nikola Božidarević. Most depictions show the Cathedral as having a dome on a round drum. However, the dome on the triptych painted by Pietro di Giovanni features a polygonal drum. The fact that the bases of the two piers situated under the dome are narrower compared to others, as can be seen on the ground plan recorded by Stošić, may have had something to do with that. The depictions of the dome regularly show exterior ribs which is a feature that requires further critical deliberation. At the same time, the dome does appear frequently in the architecture of Italian Romanesque churches. This can be seen in the architectural heritage of Apulia, Tuscany and Lombardy alike. When it comes to Dalmatia, however, only the cathedrals in its southern part, that is, at Dubrovnik and Kotor, were provided with a dome which is a phenomenon that points to the longevity of Byzantine tradition in these towns. The proposal put forward by Stošić, that the building of the Romanesque cathedral started during the last three decades of the twelfth century, when the Archbishop of Dubrovnik was Andrew of Lucca in Tuscany, seems convincing. Stošić also drew attention to the fact that the buttresses were added onto the exterior face of each lateral wall in order to carry the weight of the gallery in the upper part of the basilica. This may indicate that the initial concept was altered and it could be linked to an archival record of 1199 which mentions that a certain Eustace was required to carry out building works on the Cathedral. This Eustace was the son of Bernardo, a foreman (protomagister) in Trani in Apulia. This means that the twelfth century was not the time when the building works began, as Peković suggested, but the time when the building continued after the introduction of a new design with exterior galleries. Such galleries are found in Italian churches (in Apulia, Tuscany and Lombardy alike) as well as in some Dalmatian ones, for example on the lateral wall of Zadar Cathedral and on the wall of the semi-circular apse of the basilica of St Chrysogonus in the same town. On the other hand, fact remains that the exterior galleries in Apulian churches were supported by a series of robust buttresses which carried high vaults (Bari, Bitonto, Trani). These buttresses are much more solid in comparison to the narrow ones which were added onto the walls of Dubrovnik Cathedral. Perhaps this can be understood as a consequence of the change of design for the new cathedral which saw the replacing of what one might call a Tuscan project of the second half of the twelfth century with the Apulian one from the turn of the thirteenth. The building works continued long after this, well into the mid-fourteenth century, and in the process the cathedral acquired a number of Gothic elements. Its overall architectural composition was also imbued with the Gothic spatial articulation such as the testudines opere gothico. This makes it clear that during the thirteenth and fourteenth century, Dubrovnik experienced intense connections with Apulia.

Integer sorting on multicores and GPUs can be realized by a variety of approaches that include variants of distribution-based methods such as radix-sort, comparison-oriented algorithms such as deterministic regular sampling and random sampling parallel sorting, and network-based algorithms such as Batcher’s bitonic sorting algorithm. In this work we present an experimental study of integer sorting on multicore processors. We have implemented serial and parallel radix-sort for various radixes, deterministic regular oversampling, and random oversampling parallel sorting, including new variants of ours, and also some previously little explored or unexplored variants of bitonic-sort and odd-even transposition sort. The study uses multithreading and multiprocessing parallel programming libraries with the same C language code working under Open MPI, MulticoreBSP, and BSPlib. We first provide some general high-level observations on the performance of these implementations. If we can conclude anything is that accurate prediction of performance by taking into consideration architecture dependent features such as the structure and characteristics of multiple memory hierarchies is difficult and more often than not untenable. To some degree this is affected by the overhead imposed by the high-level library used in the programming effort. Another objective is to model the performance of these algorithms and their implementations under the MBSP (Multi-memory BSP) model. Despite the limitations mentioned above, we can still draw some reliable conclusions and reason about the performance of these implementations using the MBSP model, thus making MBSP useful and usable.

En este artículo se describen los acentos nucleares de los enunciados aseverativos en Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, desde la perspectiva de tiempo real, a partir de datos de los períodos 1970 y 2010. La descripción prosódica se basa en el modelo métrico-autosegmental, con apoyo de variables sociolingüísticas. Los resultados muestran que el acento nuclear L+¡H* es el más documentado en ambos períodos. En los datos actuales ocurre una disminución de L+¡H* y un moderado aumento en el uso de L+H*, con ascenso menor a 3 semitonos. Así, se observan indicios de retracción del acento bitonal en enunciados aseverativos de foco amplio.

In an upward-planar L-drawing of a directed acyclic graph (DAG) each edge $e=(v,w)$ is represented as a polyline composed of a vertical segment with its lowest endpoint at the tail $v$ of $e$ and of a horizontal segment ending at the head $w$ of $e$. Distinct edges may overlap, but must not cross. Recently, upward-planar L-drawings have been studied for $st$-graphs, i.e., planar DAGs with a single source $s$ and a single sink $t$ containing an edge directed from $s$ to $t$. It is known that a plane $st$-graph, i.e., an embedded $st$-graph in which the edge $(s,t)$ is incident to the outer face, admits an upward-planar L-drawing if and only if it admits a bitonic $st$-ordering, which can be tested in linear time. % We study upward-planar L-drawings of DAGs that are not necessarily $st$-graphs. As a combinatorial result, we show that a plane DAG admits an upward-planar L-drawing if and only if it is a subgraph of a plane $st$-graph admitting a bitonic $st$-ordering. This allows us to show that not every tree with a fixed bimodal embedding admits an upward-planar L-drawing. Moreover, we prove that any directed acyclic cactus with a single source (or a single sink) admits an upward-planar L-drawing, which respects a given outerplanar~embedding if there are no transitive edges. On the algorithmic side, we consider DAGs with a single source (or a single sink). We give linear-time testing algorithms for these DAGs in two cases: (a) when the drawing must respect a prescribed embedding and (b) when no restriction is given on the embedding, but the underlying undirected graph is series-parallel. For the single-sink case of (b) it even suffices that each biconnected component is series-parallel.
