Langford, H. "John Forster as biographer : a case study in nineteenth-century biography". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1206733/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
John Forster (1812-1876) has traditionally been glimpsed almost exclusively via his relationships with key nineteenth-century figures such as Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens. His biographical works can be seen as a nexus between the often conflicting positions which he occupied as a journalist, editor, literary agent and advisor, barrister, philanthropist, husband and government secretary. Forster’s biographical career is roughly divided into three periods; the early biographies (1830-1864) constituted several historiographies of key figures in the history of the long parliament, concluding in the two-volume Sir John Eliot (1864). The years 1848 to 1875 were occupied with biographies of eighteenth-century poets, novelists and dramatists, in particular Oliver Goldsmith (1848) and Jonathan Swift (1875). In the last decade of his life, Forster was diverted from these two passions by the memoirs of his friends, Walter Savage Landor (1869) and Charles Dickens (1872-4). Arising out of collaborative work with UCL and the Victoria and Albert Museum, this study centres on the National Art Library's Forster bequest. Examining and documenting in detail the materials which Forster collected and exploited to write his biographies, it explores the nature, both physical and intellectual, of Forster's library, and its importance in analysing his research and writing interests. The works are situated within the development of biography as a genre, and alongside the emerging ethos of unrestricted education and the new printing and binding technologies and techniques which were becoming available. The archive’s material elements - images, bindings, annotations, Grangerizations, the ways in which it has been curated and catalogued – form a unique documentation of standard Victorian biographical practices, and of Forster’s individualistic working habits.

Abstract (sommario):
Luiz Camillo de Oliveira Netto s intellectual biography is reconstructed on the basis of old jottings that point to the founding mark of his personality: the town of Itabira and the people of Girau. Since his first job, it is clear that the small, iron-paved town was the moral core of his personality - Itabira with its dead and living relatives, its reserved landscape, its traditions, its style. This was the origin of his love for the study of history and his destiny as an intellectual, researcher, and political activist. His archive includes primary and unpublished sources; it holds interest for researchers who would like to understand the limits and importance of his activities in the cultural and political world and to grasp, from his perspective, the spirit of the times he lived in. Most of the letters and documents upon which this work is based date from a precise cultural and historical moment: between 1904 and 1953. These materials are located at the intersection of different factors which make them the object of history, sociology, and literary genres; from these documents, to which were added interviews with people who lived around him, were drawn themes and concerns of the Brazilian intellectual world and the characterization of a historical period, with the mapping out of mentalities, the interlacing of relationships between friends, family members and fellow workers.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis analyses Anglo-American criticism of biography, during the late twentieth century from within and outside the academy. It moves on to discuss the work of three contemporary British biographers, Claire Tomalin, Richard Holmes and Hermione Lee, in the context of recent debate about the genre. Claire Tomalin, is an independent freelance biographer; Hermione Lee, is a lifelong academic who writes biography for the general and academic reader; and Richard Holmes has had a foot in both camps in his experience both as an independent biographer and an academic. The aim is to make the case that contemporary British biography since 1970, literary biography in particular, has not only responded to objections from some academics critics but, at least in the biographies by Tomalin, Holmes and Lee, embraces aspects of recent academic literary theory, New Historicism and Feminism in particular. It is not within the remit of my thesis to provide an overview of literary theory or weigh up its arguments. It is rather the intention to argue that objections to the genre have been influenced by aspects of recent theory, and that critics have not acknowledged the extent to which biographers have also been aware of, and have responded to comparable influences. I will also consider the extent to which objections to the genre are reflected in reviews of biographies by Tomalin, Holmes and Lee, as well as recent developments in the academic study of the genre. The first chapter will identify major objections to biography influenced by academic theory, drawing on both British and American sources. The next chapter will discuss how biographers, within and outside the academy, have responded to these objections. A study of Claire Tomalin’s biographies in Chapter Three will explore the extent to which she considers ‘truth’ as mediated and provisional; how she approaches autobiographical evidence; her use of anecdotes and chronology; and the use she makes of speculation. Richard Holmes, the subject of Chapter Four, is often associated with debates about identification in biography and the chapter devoted to him will explore the extent to which his approach can be seen as ‘Romantic’ in its treatment of the subject as an isolated individual, a great i man or autonomous genius; the extent to which he places his biographical subjects within their social, political and cultural contexts; and his approach to historiography, influenced by the ontological and fictional focus important to Ira Nadel. Hermione Lee, the subject of Chapter Five, is a distinguished academic whose biographical writing negotiates the balance between fact and fiction and ontological and historical knowledge differently from that of Holmes, in ways more congruent with academic practice. Chapter Six will consider the critical reception of biographies by Hermione Lee, Claire Tomalin, and Richard Holmes in academic journals and the reviews of academics in the quality press. Chapter Seven will discusses the extent to which biography as a written narrative has been subsumed within the academy into the wider field of life-writing, and how this subsuming has affected its status and character as a literary genre.

Meyer, Nancy Jean. "Vance Hartke : a political biography". Virtual Press, 1987. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/530361.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The focus of this dissertation is the political career of R. Vance Hartke, Democratic Senator from Indiana 1958-1976. The areas of emphasis include Hartke's role in the creation of the Veterans' Affairs Committee of the Senate and his chairmanship of the Committee, several of the controversies of his career, and his political style and philosophy.Books and articles written by Hartke were used extensively as were various newspapers and the Conqressional Record. Information was also obtained from interviews with Hartke and Frank Brizzi, who was staff director of the Veterans' Affairs Committee during Hartke's term as chairman. That Hartke philosophically was a liberal and politically was a risk-taker are among the conclusions reached in this study. Hartke's strongest asset in winning election to the Senate three times in a relatively conservative state was an energetic and personalized political style. Despite the controversies which surrounded Hartke and some apparent conflicts of interest," there is no evidence he committed illegal or unethical acts. Hartke used his power as chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee of the Senate to infuse his liberal ideology into public policy for American veterans. Furthermore, he expanded veterans' benefits during his tenure.

MacLeod, S. "Museum architecture : a new biography". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1379543/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
What do we really understand about museum architecture? How are museums made through design, but also through use? What are the motivations of those involved in museum projects and how is the physical stuff of museums implicated in the creation of professional identities and social relationships? Recent decades have witnessed an international explosion of museum building, expansion and renovation and the development of a sub-discipline in museum studies as museum professionals and academics have sought to understand the myriad issues involved in capital development. Despite the number of texts and events dedicated to planning successful capital projects, there has been little detailed exploration of the nature of museum architecture. Dominant understandings of museum architecture as the aesthetic outcome and activity of the architect continue to inform much writing about museum buildings, and the histories these texts construct about museums and how they are made, continue to influence professional attitudes towards capital development projects. This thesis utilises an architectural history of one museum – the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool – in order to explore the nature of museum architecture and the multiple ways in which it is produced. Driven by critical thinking around the social production of architecture, the thesis develops a biographical approach to unearth detailed histories of architectural change and development and provide glimpses of tangled stories of occupation and use revealing of social and professional relationships and of the politics and tensions behind architectural development. Drawing on research in museum studies, architectural history and theory as well as biography, autobiography and life writing, the thesis explores aspects of the subjects, methods and outcomes of architectural history and argues for detailed and nuanced histories of museum architecture which expand our understanding of how museums are made. Biography emerges as a route towards meaningful histories of change with the potential to provide some sense of the ordinary lives, the human bodily experiences that have made and remade the architecture of the museum throughout its ‘life’ and tell new stories of museum architecture necessary for the ongoing development and, potentially, radical remaking, of the physical stuff of museums and galleries.

Korf, Lindie. "D.F. Malan : a political biography". Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/3991.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (DPhil (History))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLSIH ABSTRACT: This study is a political biography of D.F. Malan (1874–1959), the first of the apartheid-era Prime Ministers, and covers the years 1874 to 1954, when Malan retired from politics. It endeavours to provide a warts-and-all account of D.F. Malan which challenges prevalent myths and stereotypes surrounding his public persona and his political orientation. While the overwhelming focus is on Malan’s political career, special attention is paid to his personal life in order to paint a multi-faceted picture of his character. The biography is written in the form of a seamless narrative and employs a literary style of writing. It is based on archival research which utilised Malan’s private collection, as well as the private collections of his Nationalist contemporaries. Malan takes the centre stage at all times, as the biography focuses on his perceptions and experiences. Malan’s views regarding Afrikaner nationalism, which was his foremost political priority, are described, and are related to his views of British imperialism as well as other ideologies such as communism and totalitarianism. This study demonstrates that there is a notable link between Malan’s perceptions of race relations and his concerns about the poor white problem. It reveals that Malan’s racial policy was, to some extent, fluid, as were his views on South Africa’s constitutional position. Debates about South Africa’s links to Britain and the nature of the envisioned republic preoccupied Afrikaner nationalists throughout the first half of the twentieth century – and served as an outlet for regional and generational tensions within the movement. Malan’s clashes with nationalists such as Tielman Roos, J.B.M. Hertzog and J.G. Strijdom are highlighted as an indication of the internecine power struggles within the National Party (NP). By emphasising these complexities, this study seeks to contribute to a nuanced understanding of the South African past.

Tehan, William J. III. "Douglas MacArthur- An Administrative Biography". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29130.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
For more than a half century Douglas MacArthur was a servant of the United States. He is best remembered as a general and a soldier, especially for his leadership during World War II and the Korean War. MacArthur was also the Superintendent of West Point, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, Generalissimo ( Commander) of the Armed Forces and Military Advisor (Minister of Defense) to the President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, and the Supreme Commander Allied Powers and the Military Governor of occupied Japan. In these positions he functioned not as a soldier, but as a senior public administrator. The dissertation will begin by establishing the military as a valid and unique field of Public Administration. Contributions of military adminstration to the discipline of Public Administration will then be examined. The dissertation will examine MacArthur's professional and academic training for his previously listed administrative posts. A determination and analysis of MacArthur's theoretical and applied approaches to Public Administration and General Management Theories will be made. The analysis of MacArthur's performance in his administrative positions will be made against a backdrop of contemporary Public Administration Theory.

A few blinks of an eye. The time it takes a hummingbird to flap its wings 80 times. For a photon of light to travel from Los Angeles to New York and back almost 40-fold. The second has been there since the literal dawn of time, if one exists. But what defines the second? Like a pop star constantly reinventing themselves, the second has undertaken a myriad of identities, first defined as a brief moment in the daily rotation of the earth around its axis. Today, the second is officially defined by over 9 billion oscillations of a cesium atom. Although it has changed costumes, its astronomical roots still ground the second. These definitions, these identities are projected onto it by an ever-curious, ever-demanding fan base. These fans are, of course, us - humans living in a complex, evolving society. They have been priests, farmers, scientists. Now, whatever our relationship is to one tick of the second hand, today we are beholden to this new, atomic second far beyond matters of time. Our entire technological infrastructure, from airplanes to smartphones, televisions to stock markets, driving directions to space research, would crumble without the atomic second and the 21st century horologists that build the timekeepers of the modern second: the atomic clock.

Gometz, Abigail Kathleen. "Eugippius of Lucullanum : a biography". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/654/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The following thesis is concerned with reconstructing the life of Eugippius of Lucullanum, abbot of the monastery of St Severinus. We must rely upon written sources for the majority of our information about Eugippius' career as biographer and abbot, and we have three texts from which we must reconstruct the details of his vocation. The texts are useful for a multitude of reasons, and have already been utilized by scholars working on diverse topics. They also reflect three distinct phases and interests of Eugippius' career. First chronologically is his Excerpta ex operibus sancti Augustini, a florilegium dedicated to the virgin Proba; second we have the Vita sancti Severini, Eugippius' most personal work, chronicling the life and miracles of his mentor, St Severinus; finally, we have a monastic regula that has only recently been ascribed to Eugippius; this rule contains extracts from a range of earlier authorities, from Augustine to Cassian to the Regula Magistri. All three sources are problematic, as they are fundamentally lacking in personal details, which makes reconstructing Eugippius' activities a complex and challenging task. For additional information, we must look to both the environment in which he was working, which involves examining the political situation in Italy following Theoderic's rise to power, as well as the religious tensions precipitated by the Acacian and Laurentian Schisms. Finally, it is also necessary to consult the works of Eugippius' circle of contacts, as often their personal details, letters, and written documents provide details that are omitted from Eugippius' own work.

Biney, Ama Barbara. "Kwame Nkrumah : an intellectual biography". Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2007. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28819/.

Abstract (sommario):
Kwame Nkrumah remains a towering figure in African history. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent campaign of civil disobedience to achieve political ends, he led present-day Ghana to independence in 1957. Nkrumah made Ghana a beacon of hope for not only Ghanaians but also people of African descent throughout the world. Perhaps no other African leader of the 1950s and 1960s personified the dreams, principles and aspirations of this era. At the centre of my analysis of Nkrumah's political, social and economic thought will be his own writings. I begin my re-examination of Nkrumah's life and thought by focusing on the political discourse and controversies surrounding him. The focus of Chapter 1 is his sojourn in America, where he pursued his academic studies. Chapter 2 examines his period of political activism in London between 1945 to 1947 under the ideological guidance of George Padmore. This prepared him for the leadership of the new political party he founded, the Convention People's Party, following his return to the Gold Coast in 1947. In Chapter 3,1 focus on Nkrumah's political performance, his relationship with the British colonial authorities in the period 1951 to 1957. Chapter 4 scrutinises his position on the federalist argument presented by his political enemy, the National Liberation Movement. Chapter 5 looks at politics in the post-independence period whilst Nkrumah's economic and cultural policies are the focus of Chapter 6. While in office, Nkrumah documented his thought in several publications, which will be examined in Chapter 7. His foreign policy aimed at furthering African unity will be critically assessed via the various institutional mechanisms he set up to achieve this objective in Chapter 8. After the coup, which deposed him in February 1966, Nkrumah continued to develop his political and economic convictions and this is the focus of Chapter 9. The final chapter considers Nkrumah's legacy in Ghana and on the wider Pan-African stage in contemporary Africa.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of this thesis is Leonora written by Elena Poniatowska. The aim of the study is to analyze the literary technique and strategy used in constructing this book which depicts the life of a famous painter, Leonora Carrington. The analysis concentrates on two aspects: the extent of its feminist character and whether it can be classified as a fictional biography or a biographic fiction. In order to arrive at a conclusion on these issues a brief summary of literary and feminist theory is presented as well as a short description of relevant aspects of the surrealist movement. According to the author Leonora does not pretend to be a biography but rather a tribute to a great woman and artist. This esay however sustains that the book is a feminist fictional biography. In fact it builds upon books written by Carrington herself with a highly autobiographical content as well as on biographical texts. Both the author and her protoganist are well-known for their feminist stand and the analysis shows how feminist theory or thinking is reflected both on behalf on the writer as well as in the construction of the hero and certain aspects of her life that build up this biographical fiction.

Day, Lara Elisabeth. "Paul Schultze-Naumburg : an intellectual biography". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17964.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The subject of this dissertation is the work of the German writer, architect and Volkspädagoge Paul Schultze-Naumburg (1869-1949). His published work - 37 books, over 230 articles and countless lectures – ranging from art and architectural pedagogy, practice and criticism to cultural and racial theory, made him one of the most widely read German authors of the first half of the 20th century. Renowned during his lifetime, his racial and eugenic writing prompted his relegation in post-war German historiography, which ignored his impact and central position in the cultural and architectural landscape of German modernism. This dissertation examines Schultze-Naumburg as a specific cultural catalyst of radical nationalist and racist art and architectural history and theory, and traces his trajectory through Wilhelmine, Weimar and National Socialist Germany. Beyond the fine arts, Schultze-Naumburg helped formulate the conceptions of the anti-Semitic, pro Heimat and anti-urban, völkisch mind frame that would be transformed into the blood and soil rhetoric of the emerging National Socialist ideology. Schultze-Naumburg’s historical stature and socio-cultural prominence was recognized throughout his life, and history’s subsequent repression of his figure is based entirely on his ideas nefarious and fanatical potency and not on his erstwhile importance. Moving broadly chronologically, the first four chapters of the dissertation examine Schultze- Naumburg’s Wilhelmine work. After the introduction and literature review, Chapter II begins with an overview of his education and examines his landscape painting. Chapter III examines a sample of his prescriptive preservation writing composed for the Deutsche Bund Heimatschutz. The fourth examines his involvement in the Lebensreform movement and the Deutsche Werkbund, establishing his role in the Kunstgewerbe movement. Chapter V concentrates on the application of the Lebensreform ideal and Hermann Muthesius’ writing on Schultze-Naumburg’s design of the Cecilienhof (1913-1917) for the imperial Crown Prince. The sixth chapter traces the development of Schultze-Naumburg’s corporeal racial rhetoric from his Wilhelmine writing on women’s clothing reform to such radical polemics as Kunst und Rasse (1928), and its cumulation in National Socialist legislative policy, the Gesetz zur Verhütung des Erbkranken Nachwuchses (1933). Chapter VII considers the city of Weimar as the site of Schultze-Naumburg’s Volkspädagogik positing 1930 as turning point for both his career and the city itself.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Art historian Joan Kerr (1938-2004) championed many little-known artists in her democratic approach to Australian art history. As an architectural historian she held strong views on how ??heritage?? restoration should be conducted. She was always entertaining, at times controversial. Virginia Spate described her as fulfilling Baudelaire??s definition of a critic as ??partial, passionate and political??.1 Using material from Kerr??s personal papers, interviews with Kerr herself and with family members, friends and colleagues, as well as selections from her impressive body of published work, I have aimed to write a sympathetic yet clearsighted biography of a woman who was, to quote her husband Jim Kerr, ??a teacher, writer, wife, mother and possum stirrer??.2 Biography has not always enjoyed academic attention and until late in the 20th century it was traditionally consigned to history.3 Yet this has been an uneasy liaison and biography is now considered a hybrid form, between history and literature, with links to autobiography, psychology, sociology and anthropology. In the introductory chapter I explore the potential of these disciplines for interpreting the facts of a life. I also include a survey of literary biographical writing (including useful models), a discussion of the concept of ??public intellectual?? in relation to Joan Kerr??s reputation in Australian art history and technical issues such as structure, voice and ??speaking for??. Subsequent chapters trace Joan Kerr??s private life ?? childhood, health, education, marriage and motherhood ?? as well as her academic achievements, her work in 19th- and 20th-century Australian art and architectural history, her curatorial practice and major publications, her use of humour and satire and confrontations with art critics, academics and administrators. The final chapter encompasses Kerr??s tribute dinner at Government House in June 2003, her death on 22 February 2004 and funeral on 1 March 2004. In writing this biography I have aimed to do justice to Joan Kerr??s life and work as well as to produce an informed piece of scholarship that could be enjoyed by everyone interested in Australia??s cultural heritage.

Abstract (sommario):
Most bibiographes list the external facts and yet quite miss the mystery and uniqueness of the person under investigation. Why? The aim of this thesis is, first, to evaluate the principal contemporary methodologies for constructing 'literary biographies' (i.e. life histories of writers, actors, musicians, and so forth, based on empirical study of factual data, and offering interpretations of the life and of its cultural reputation) and. secondly, to propose a specific approach to the genre that can produce more instructive and informative literary lives. The thesis is a practice-based study, consisting of a written submission which reflects on, and is supported by, examples of the biographical craft being considered - specifically, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (1994 ), The Real Life of Laurence Olivier (1996), The Man Who Was Private Widdle: Charles Hawtrey ( 2001) and Anthony Burgess ( 2002). These experimental works were written partly to explore the problems and procedures of biographical methodologies, and to extend the field of knowledge within which literary biographies operate.

Adams, Sean A. "Genre of Acts and collected biography". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8759.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis argues that the best genre parallel for the Acts of the Apostles is collected biography. This conclusion is reached through an application of ancient and modern genre theory and a detailed comparison of Acts and collected biographies. Chapter 1 offers prolegomena to this study and further delineates the contours of the thesis. Chapter 2 provides an extensive history of research, not only to provide the context and rationale for the present work, but also to indicate some of the shortcomings of previous investigations and the need for this present study. Chapter 3 presents the methodological perspective for this exploration. Making use of ancient and modern genre theory, I propose that scholars need to understand genre as a dynamic and flexible system that is culturally influenced and highly adaptable. In Chapter 4 I trace the diachronic development of ancient biographies, describe different sub-divisions, and note the strong, enduring relationship between biography and history. In evaluating the development of biography as a whole, there appears to be a distinct preference by ancient biographers for collected biographies. Chapters 5 to 7 interpret Acts in light of its possible relationship with collected biographies. Chapter 5 provides a detailed comparison of the structural and content features of history, novels, collected biographies, and Acts. Overall, this chapter argues that the structural and content features of Acts are most strongly related to the genre of biography and, secondarily, to history. Chapters six and seven evaluate Acts as a modified collected biography, identifying notable similarities in content features, structure, and endings. Chapter 8 summarizes and concludes the thesis, along with a brief mention of avenues for future research. Related literary investigations, such as a list of literary topoi references in biographies, biographies referenced by Diogenes Laertius, and a full discussion of biography’s adaptability in the first century (modelled by Plutarch and Philo), are treated in appendices.

Bergamin, Peter. "An intellectual biography of Abba Ahimeir". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:a49fe9c4-5ba4-427c-ae03-c0a8b79cbc83.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
My thesis focuses on the ideological development of the Maximalist Revisionist Zionist leader Abba Ahimeir, and positions him more accurately within the contexts of the Zionist Right, the period of his political activity, and the Zionist movement in general. Through an examination of his doctoral thesis on Oswald Spengler and first publications, I conclude that Spenglerian theory exerted a fundamental influence upon Ahimeir throughout his entire life, and that his embrace of Fascist ideology began six years earlier than is generally accepted. I thus contend that Ahimeir's ideological path was already set in 1924, far earlier than is generally believed. A survey of his journalistic output, while a member of the moderately socialist party HaPoel HaTzair, shows that Ahimeir's apparent shift from Left to Right was not the radical defection that it is currently considered to be. A study of primary source archival material allows me to demonstrate that as a leader of the Revisionist Youth Group Betar and instructor in its Leadership Training School, Ahimeir's ideological influence upon Revisionist youth was far greater than is commonly accepted. A discussion of more general intellectual-historical concepts - Spenglerian-, Fascist-, and Revolutionary- theory, Jewish Völkisch-nationalism, secular Messianism - allows me to re-weight certain ideological outlooks in the current body of research regarding Ahimeir, the Revisionist Party, and the Zionist Left. Notably, I suggest we view Ahimeir as a 'Revolutionary' who used Fascism merely as a modus operandi in the service of his revolution. This particularistic ideological outlook was exemplified in his semi-clandestine, anti-British resistance group Brit HaBiryonim, as a thorough examination of court documents from the group's trial demonstrates. The study provides the first intellectual biography of one of the most influential figures on the Zionist Right, and rights some historical wrongs that exist within Revisionist- and Labour-Zionist myths, and indeed, Israeli collective memory.

Turley, Stich Erin. "An Historical Biography of Virginia Axline". Thesis, University of North Texas, 2020. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1703343/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Virginia Axline developed a new field of child psychotherapy by applying a nondirective approach to the burgeoning experimentation of utilizing play in therapeutic work with children. While much biographical information is available regarding other leaders in the fields of counseling and psychology, historical research into Axline and her development of child-centered play therapy represent a gap in the literature. The purpose of the current study was to: 1) examine the professional contributions of Virginia Axline; 2) gather personal information regarding Axline that contributes to deeper understanding of her theory; and 3) identify life circumstances or events that influenced Axline's professional contributions. Historical methodology was utilized to locate and examine artifacts and materials necessary to create an interpretive biography of Axline's life and work, with a focus on her professional influences, experiences, and contributions. Historical methods utilized include historiography, oral history, and interpretive biography, with an emphasis on established and accepted source criticism and data synthesis processes. The research yielded a number of historically significant and previously unknown documents valuable to the field of CCPT including personal correspondence, academic writings, and interviews, as well as academic and government records. The research also established new information about and understandings of several of Axline's professional relationships. The research also calls into question the original authorship of scholarly contributions in the field of counseling for which Axline may have deserved, but not received credit. Included in the biography is information related to Axline's early life, higher education, career timeline, professional development, mentoring relationships, research interests, student perceptions, collegial relationships, personal hardships, professional interests and advocacy, teaching and learning methods, and her decline in later life.

Gibson, A. G. G. "Claudius at the river : aspects of biography". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29116.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Tiberius Claudius Germanicus was acclaimed emperor in AD41 after the murder of Gaius by members of the Praetorian Guard. Despite manifest handicaps that worried the imperial family enough to result in a career of education, scholarship and minor offices, Ti. Claudius Caesar emerged as princeps, a position which he held until his untimely death in AD54. Scholars have assessed the impact of Claudius’ disabilities in a negative light, or, in a spirit of revisionism without producing evidence that would authentically refute the original allegations. This is a contradictory result; one is asked to accept as fact the severity of a negative and satirical portrait of Claudius, but then be coerced to assume that he was in fact still capable - this is not a tenable position. Past scholarship has given a cursory assessment of Claudius’ illness, and promoted infantile paralysis (polio) or cerebral palsy as being consistent with his apparent eccentricities in the sources. This study carries out a risk assessment of Claudius’ birth and early childhood, a pathological examination based on the evidence; the result of the study shows that any long-term illness is stable and then progresses to a degenerative state. After a survey of neurological diseases, the conclusion drawn is that Claudius’ ill health was Post Polio Syndrome (PPS). An important conclusion is that PPS is not connected to the reported stutter, although the voice quality may have been affected by progressive muscle wasting. A detailed and critical examination of the source’s descriptions of the events of AD41 demonstrates that selecting Claudius was a realistic choice, one borne out by the medical pathology of PPS.

Annis, J. Lee. "Howard H. Baker, Jr., a public biography". Virtual Press, 1985. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/441105.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation provides a narrative analysis of the political career of former Senate Majority Leader Howard H. Baker, Jr. Based principally upon findings from interviews, public papers, newspapers, and other primary sources, the study includes accounts of Mr. Baker's bids for Senate Republican Leader in 1969, 1971, and 1977, his campaign for the Presidency in 1980, and his failure to secure the nods for the position of Vice President in 1968, 1973, 1974, and 1976. Its focus, however, lies upon his legislative work and his role in the development of a statewide two-party system in his native Tennessee. It can be said without question that Baker defined the overriding issue of all Watergate investigations with his query, "What did the President know and when did he know it?" Equally evident from this treatise is Baker's role as the de facto architect of the coalition which emerged in the mid 1960s to challenge Democratic hegemony at the state level in Tennessee. With well-reasoned appeals to those groups disenchanted with those inBaker won a landslide victory in 1966 and even larger margins in 1972 and 1978. In the meantime, several younger Tennessee Republicans captured other onetime Democratic seats using much the same strategy.Much of Baker's success at the polls sprang from the perception that his outlook coincided sharply with the moderately conservative weltanschuung predominant within his constituency. Unlike many to his right, however, Baker believed his party could not be merely naysayers, but had a duty to offer alternatives to Democratic proposals for the alleviation of societal problems. Upon becoming Leader, he, following the pattern of Robert Taft, rallied his caucuses behind solutions utilizing the free-market approach. Well established by this time was his reputation as a problem-solver and a conciliator. Prior to 1977, he had played integral roles in the development of the Fair Housing Act, revenue sharing, the monumental antipollution bills of the early 1970s, the opening of the highway trust fund to mass transit programs, and legislation accelerating the reapportionment of state legislatures. Thereafter, he played equally significant, and sometimes determinative parts in the approval of the Panama Canal Treaties, the sale of jets to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the creation of the Department of Education, the Reagan economic program, the lifting of the arms embargo on Turkey, and the designation of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday. Only Hubert Humphrey, Henry Jackson, and Russell Long among the Democrats with whom he served has as broad a scope of accomplishment. Within his own caucus, his only equal was Everett Dirksen, his father-in-law.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Among the Indian novelists writing in English, Mulk Raj Anand is pre-eminent for the seriousness and fullness of his commitment to bring about a new Indian society. He is a novelist with an idea of himself and a conception of life which have been evolved from many influences, mainly western European, but with Indian sanctions and traditions. His humanism, new termed Karuna Rasa or compassion, is the natural outcome of his searching and sufferings arising from the crises in his life. According to Anand, he writes because there is this compulsion to express his feelings, his inner convictions and beliefs that have made him accept life. His autobiographical novels, Seven Summers, Morning Face and Confession of a Lover, and the novels that developed from his 'Confessional' of two thousand pages, are distinguished by this Indian personality, the people that touched his life, and the events that constitute the rich history of India in pre-Independence days.
