Abstract (sommario):
Through an analysis of the development of social organisations in Singapore since 1819, this thesis investigates the ebb and flow of associational activity through both the colonial and post-Independence periods in order to establish its nature and form and determinants thereof. This will be done using a four part structure that provides a framework for such analysis. The structure distinguishes between associational life, rudimentary civil society, conditional civil society and comprehensive civil society. Although considerable work has been done on the analysis of contemporary civil society in Singapore, the thesis is the first dedicated historical study of civil society in Singapore. It adopts an understanding of civil society that accords with post-Marxist definitions of civil society that argue that organisations need to play a political role in order to be considered as part of civil society. This contrasts with a more inclusive liberal notion of civil society emphasising the range and extent of social organisations constituting civil society, including those outside either the formal or informal political spheres. The post-Marxist definition of civil society chosen as a basis for the discussion contains many elements. Primarily, though, it requires the presence of a range of voluntary, autonomous organisations that have the capacity to promote their interests through political means within a competitive political sphere. The pivotal dimension for the emergence of civil society is the presence of a competitive political sphere. It is often the crucial missing element that prevents a comprehensive civil society from emerging. The study reveals that a rudimentary civil society had developed by the introduction of colonial rule in 1867. Between 1819 and 1867, the merchants used a selection of formal and informal methods to influence public policy. Although many of the key elements of a comprehensive civil society were missing, this rudimentary form of civil society was both vigorous and effective. This effective form of civil society continued to grow and develop into the colonial period because the associations continued to actively pursue their interests through whatever means were possible, and their participation in public policy debate was both tolerated and encouraged by the colonial regime. Although a range of well organised associations emerged, the absence of a competitive formal political sphere meant that associational activity was limited. In the absence of such a sphere, the colonial regime was able to disempower organisations that threatened British power in the region. Associational activity represented a conditional civil society throughout the remainder of the pre-war period, and it ebbed and flowed in response to British internal and external policies. Driven by the forces of nationalism, an active conditional civil society re-emerged at the end of the Japanese Occupation. In the immediate postwar period, the British made a serious commitment to self-government for Singapore. In line with that commitment, the first postwar constitution represented a significant step towards self government. The new constitution created a political environment that provided extensive opportunities for political competition, and the conditional form of civil society entered a transition period towards a comprehensive civil society. This transformation was halted by the introduction of the Emergency Regulations in 1948. However, by 1955, the rapid approach of self-government and the introduction of a new constitution created a political sphere that was competitive. This stimulated the formation of a range of political parties that pursued the interests of their constituents, and a comprehensive civil society emerged. By 1975, the ruling PAP party had emasculated the vigorous associations that it had inherited from the British and had created a dominant one party state. Associational activities were directed through government controlled grassroots organisations and the once powerful trade unions and student groups were co-opted by the state. Between 1960-1985, organised communal activity had no political role and represented associational life. In 1985, independent interest groups began to re-emerge as a result of massive social and economic change. Although the political sphere became slightly more competitive after 1981 due to the presence of opposition representatives in Parliament and some political accommodation of the growing middle class, it remains restricted. In the absence of this key dimension, contemporary civil society takes a conditional form, and the regime is free to disempower any organisations that it perceives as a threat. This thesis will argue that civil society can exist in many forms. These forms accommodate to varying degrees the ideal definition adopted here. The factors that help explain what forms predominate include the strength and determination of the associations' leaders to pursue their interests, external factors such as the growth of nationalism, and the level of social, political and economic needs to be addressed. Most importantly, the nature and role of the state has played an important part, and state power was used to both promote and obstruct civil society. In particular, the level of tolerance and accommodation towards organisational activity shown by the state has proved to be a major explanatory variable for the emergence of a comprehensive civil society.

Abstract (sommario):
The thesis aims to suggest directions towards a defensible conception of citizenship and approach to citizenship education in Singapore. In recent years, citizenship in Singapore has centred around the themes of identity and participation. Among educationists in general, there is a recognition that citizens need to be prepared for involvement in the political process. In plural societies, however, there is no one set of values which can guide deliberation and resolve differences. Consequently, there are questions as to the values which could be advocated in citizenship education. The approach in this thesis is to analyse the concept of citizenship, with due consideration given to the values and assumptions of Singapore society, and its social, political and economic circumstances. This analysis is carried out in the light of the research and theorising on citizenship and citizenship education in England and Wales. Controversial issues exist on which there is no agreement on which society is divided. The neutral approach, which is sometimes suggested as being appropriate for handling such issues, is examined. The larger question of state neutrality is also discussed, and a case is made for state perfectionism. In addition, it is argued that there are legitimate variations in moral judgement, and an account is presented of the nature of moral thinking that admits of such variations. It is suggested that a common culture is important in a plural society because this provides the grounds for policy decisions, particularly where state perfectionism is espoused; it also allows for the development of a national identity. Developing this common culture requires public deliberation in exploring the values and issues concerning a society. Finally, the arguments that have been presented are related to citizenship and citizenship education in Singapore, and recommendations made.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis discusses some aspects of the exhibition designer's role in state museums and galleries. It draws on the author's experiences in Singapore and his observations as a student living in Sydney. Museum exhibition designers are servants of the state. They help create public culture and promote a version of history. But if one is to understand the ways in which designers create meaning (and serve their employer's interests) we need to identify the 'vocabulary' and 'grammar' that they have at their disposal. To this end, the thesis outlines the variables that they work with and argues that they need to understand their employer's ideologies and history. The design vocabulary and grammar that the exhibition designer works with to create meaning in bridging understanding needs to be commensurate with the knowledge of history and the primary ideologies of the state which he/she serves. Singapore's recent interest in arts and heritage museums as part of a larger desire for regional economic and cultural survival and pre-eminence needs to be identified with the evolution, interconnectedness and ambitions of Singapore's arts and cultural organisations. In conjunction, some of the implications of Singapore's Arts and Heritage Policy need to be unpacked. A brief but concise comparative history of Sydney, Australia is made for the arts, cultural and museum comparison between Australia and Singapore. The exhibition designer's vocabulary and grammar can then be used to evaluate four exhibitions in Sydney and Singapore. This dissertation addresses the issues of 'Asian-ness' , modernisation without westernisation and the state's desire to meet the challenges which global communication systems place upon Singapore citizen's welfare. The dissertation is very art focused. It discusses all display objects as though they were paintings and works of fine art

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is aimed at explaining the relationship between Confucian values and democracy in Taiwan and Singapore. Some scholars generally assume that “Asian values” or Confucian ideology inhibit a country’s acceptance of liberal democratic values. There are some important findings in this study: Firstly, Confucian ideology still remain in Taiwanese and Singaporean minds today, especially both of them have high level of Confucian Social Values. And Singaporeans obtain higher Confucian Political Values, while Taiwanese have lower. Secondly, most of Confucian social ideology do not have negative impact to public attitudes toward civil society and democracy, even they enhances citizens’ participation a formal association and their social trust and tolerance. Lastly, Confucian political ideology may be not incompatible with public support for a democratic regime but it is not related to public attitudes toward to democracy. According to the findings of this study, Confucian ideology should not inhibit East Asian people acceptance of liberal democracy.

Abstract (sommario):
The institutions on which this project focuses are state institutions, namely, the organisation of power of the state and the governing regime and social institutions, namely the shared social meanings and perceptions. The main research question is how such state-society relations impact on the development trajectory of the IT industry of a place. It introduces a combined use of the historical and sociological institutional approaches to analyse the findings from two empirical case studies, namely, the development of the IT industry of Hong Kong and Singapore. These two city-states are chosen owing to their similarities in cultural and colonial backgrounds and their stark differences in political and social institutions.106 in-depth interviews with IT policy makers, firm owners, practitioners and other important IT players have been conducted in Hong Kong and Singapore in order to gauge the interaction between institutions and actors in the state and society. My case studies illustrate how social and state actors respond to the state and social institutions; and illuminates how such responses can affect their attitudes at work. The findings of these case studies suggest these actors’ attitudes can directly impact on the making of IT policy and influence the development path of the IT industry. This dissertation proposes the following argument. State institutions can directly determine the state autonomy and capacity to reallocate financial and human resources in industrial development and the effectiveness of the IT industrial policy. These state institutions also engender certain kinds of social institutional environments and shape the nature of the state-society relations. Such state-society relations influence actors’ innovative behaviour at work which ultimately conditions the development trajectory of the IT industry of a place.

Lombaard, Christo. "South African perspectives on the communication of the Bible in church and society / C.J.S. Lombaard". Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/209.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis reflects research undertaken over the past eight years about the way in which the Bible has been brought to bear on a number of frameworks within the South African socio-historical context. It is argued that it is not at all surprising that the Bible would become a part of the dialogues of the church; the Bible remains the source of the Christian identity of the churches in South Africa in a very particular way. Nor is it really unexpected that the Bible would be influential in discussions on broader societal issues in South Africa. With ± 80% of the South African populace subscribing to the Christian faith, and with the most prominent strands of Christianity found in South Africa making so much of the role of the Bible in their lives of faith, it would be perplexing if the Bible had indeed not been a major feature in these debates. The Bible spoke and speaks to church and country in South Africa. Put differently, as a phenomenological formulation: the Bible is brought to speech, that is, is brought to communication within the closer ecclesiological precincts as well as the broader socio-political environment of South Africa, precisely because of the particular religious configurations that characterise church and culture locally. The following is thus, albeit retroatively, posed as a general research question running centrally through all the research essays under review here: How was the Bible brought to communication within different spheres of the South African society? A total of nine scholarly publications are included, although in fact they represent seven research outputs. In two cases the research was first published as chapters in books, and was then re-published in article format. The most important conclusions reached, are: that the Old Testament is a vastly under-utilised source for communicating Christian spirituality, a state of affairs for which ten reasons can been indicated; that literal Bible translations are more effective in engaging Bible readers, because they invite active, interpretative participation by the intended receivers; that the use of the Bible for political purposes, even for opposing political causes, always reduces the Bible to a rhetorical tool, namely to substantiate views being propagated; that the present government's communication on religious matters has been rhetorically ambivalent: while continued funding for university programmes of - by name - Biblical Studies, has been questioned in Parliament and elsewhere, the churches (for whom the Bible is central to their identity and as a motivational force) are called upon to support government's social relief programmes; that the editorial and other comment columns of newspapers offer a substantial, yet vastly under-utilised resource for preachers in their attempts to deliver contextually relevant sermons; that deliberate consideration given to persuasive variables are of substantial importance to preachers; most important, though, for the long term effectiveness of the Gospel message, is the perceived integrity of the preacher; that both the Old and New Testaments offer substantial resources for the enhancement of communication and the building of relationships between different church denominations, with the caveat, though, that texts should not be misinterpreted, as has been the case, since this undermines the integrity of such processes. The ways in which the Bible has been used in these different societal spheres are, thus, varied, yet seldom satisfactory. By indicating the problems and perspectives that have come to light through these research projects, a contribution may be made towards a more mature society in which religion plays a constructive role, and is, as a corollary, respected for what it is in its own right.

Taylor, Glen A. "Supernatural power ritual and divination in ancient Israelite society : a social-scientific, poetics, and comparative analysis of Deuteronomy 18". Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2005. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3144/.

Abstract (sommario):
The thesis argued for here is that a social-scientific, poetics, and comparative analysis reveals that all the religious phenomena listed in Deuteronomy 1 8.10-11 are bound together in a conceptual unity. The religious practitioners and practices enumerated properly portray various elements characteristic of ANE religious beliefs in conflict with an emerging, world-constructing, and ideologically explicit Yahwistic vision of reality. Furthermore, Deuteronomy presents the Yahwistic prophet, the nābi’ as the preeminent symbol of Yahwistic reality, which seeks to replace all other notions of reality in the Israelite community. This study makes contributions to an interdisciplinary approach to biblical interpretation by using a combination of social-scientific criticism, poetics literary analysis, and comparative analysis of ANE religions and ethnographic field studies. Special significance is given to Meir Sternberg's poetics analysis, Peter Berger's theory of world-construction, Michael Carrither's theory of intersubjectivity, and Douglas Davies' theory of clusters of belief This study also makes contributions to the understanding of the unique role of the Yahwistic prophet as preeminent cultural symbol in Israelite society.

Sadoway, David. "From associations to info-sociations : civic environmentalism and information communication technologies in three Asian tiger cities". Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/193516.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This multi-year, multi-city investigation seeks to examine how and why civic associations are employing information communication technologies (ICTs) in their work and the extent to which these uses are transforming urban ‘civic space.’ Rather than being passive non-state actors shaped by technologies in the ‘networked city,’ civic environmental associations are treated in this study as co-evolving ‘actor-networks’ that are both shaping and shaped by their ICT practices. This study systematically examines how ICT-linked tools or platforms are reconfiguring civic associations and civic space in the three ‘tiger city’ settings of Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei. This investigation employs grounded theory, case study methods, and actor-network theory to examine the co-evolution of ICTs and civic environmental associations. The concept of info-sociations (ICT-associations) is employed in constructing a socio-technical model for analysis of the fast-evolving ICT practices of civic associations. Such an approach suggests that diverse forms of ICT-linked praxis—where civic ideals and knowledge are being put into practice—involves multimodal digital practices; alongside blended or multiplexed physical and virtual practices; and multiscalar practices. The info-sociational model compares ICT-linked organizational, participatory and spatial practices at the associational level by examining digitally-linked: internal and external organizational change; reconfigurations in the public sphere and cyberactivism; scalar transformations and associational alliance formations. Analyses of city-specific ‘civic space’ storylines; alongside a discussion of the problems and potentialities of ICT-linked practices also contributes to an integrated info-sociational model. An info-sociational approach therefore serves to examine transformations in knowledge, power and space as civic environmentalists employ ICTs. The info-sociational model supports an analysis of three pairs of age-distinct civic environmental associations in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei. These six cases (as units of analysis) were selected for their diverse civic environmental activities; their differences in age; and their variety of ICT-linked practices, including uses for: public deliberations, and mobilizing activism; networked alliance formations; identifying environmental and spatial issues in city regions; and creating alternative green media. Employing the info-sociational model in analyses of the six civic environmental associations led to the observations that: ‘externally-oriented’ ICT-linked practices were of greater importance than ‘internal practices’ amongst civic associations; that groups prioritized ‘digital green public sphere’ practices compared to ‘cyberactivism’; and these associations employed ICTs more frequently for ‘alliance-building’ than for ‘spatial transformations.’ Several of the cases illustrated how ICTs can enhance or augment existing alliances and potentially support new types of civic-cyber formations. By touching on questions of knowledge, power and space an info-sociational approach therefore can contribute to integrated explanations of how and why civic associations are using and (re)shaping ICTs in pursuit of their diverse aims for more livable and just cities.

Canlas, Jerevie Malig. "The Influence of Family Relationship Satisfaction and Perceived Work-Family Harmony on Mental Health Among Asian Working Mothers in Singapore". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4412.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Women's participation in the labor force has increased in Singapore in the recent years. Research has suggested that women's attempt to relate their traditional roles as wife and mother with the expectations of their modern role as a paid employee may have an impact on their mental health. Data from a cross-sectional national probability sample of 284 employed mothers in Singapore were used to investigate the relationships between work hours, marital satisfaction, child relationship satisfaction, work-family harmony, and mental health. Based on the results of the Structural Equation Model, mothers who worked long hours experienced more positive mental health. This is perhaps attributable to paid work being considered as a means by which women can contribute to the family's welfare and well-being, instead of competing with one's finite resources. Results of the mediation analysis suggested that marital satisfaction had a positive, albeit small, effect on mental health through work-family harmony. This renders support to the family stress model theory, suggesting that for Asian women who actively participate in the work force, family relationships play an important role on their work-life experience, which ultimately has a significant impact on their mental health. Recognizing the unique cultural meanings Asian societies ascribe to work and family can facilitate a better understanding of Asian women's work-family experience.

Abstract (sommario):
Magister Theologiae - MTh
A number of biblical scholars have observed that the Bible has been used by dominant groups in certain societies to justify and condone discrimination and oppression. Slavery, colonialism and apartheid are often cited as examples of racial oppression based on particular understandings of the Bible. Some biblical scholars have pointed to the fact that theologians who work in contexts of racially liberated societies, such as South Africa, are slow in recognizing the injustices caused by gender discrimination. Instead, male privilege continues to be upheld particularly through the Biblical justification of male headship. The popularity of the 'Mighty Men' Conference is a case in point as it encourages men to take their supposedly rightful, "God-given" place as prophet, priest and king in marriage and family relationships. The emerging popularity of male-headship theology thwarts whatever gains have been made in the areas of gender justice and equality in various spheres of society, including the church. Headship theology often goes unquestioned because it is supported by particular interpretation/understanding of biblical texts which are quoted out of context to support and justify male dominance. For example, Luke 7: 36-50 is often interpreted in showing the "sinful" woman as one who needs forgiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
Applying utopian theory to the Bible reveals a number of issues surrounding the biblical text within academic disciplines such as biblical studies, which study the Bible as an ancient cultural artefact, and among religious readers of the Bible. The biblical passage Numbers 13 was chosen as a case study of a utopian reading of the image of the Promised Land to demonstrate the Bible’s multifaceted potential by externalising the presupposition brought to the text. The underlying method is derived from an ideal type procedure, appropriated from Weber. Instead of comparing phenomena to each other, one compares a phenomenon to a constructed ideal type. This method enables one to compare phenomena independently of exclusive definitions and direct linear influences. It has been suggested by biblical scholars that utopian readings of the Bible can yield insights into socio-political circumstances in the society which produced biblical texts. Using observations by Holquist about utopias’ relationships to reality it is asked if applying the concept of utopia to a biblical passage allows drawing conclusions about the originating society of the Hebrew Bible. The answer is negative. Theory about literary utopias is applied to the case study passage. Numbers 13 is similar to literary utopias in juxtaposing a significantly improved society with a home society, the motif of travellers in an unfamiliar environment, and the feature of a map which is graphically not representable. Noth’s reading of the biblical passage’s toponyms reveals that its map is a utopian map. Numbers 13 is best understood as a literary utopia describing an unrealistic environment and using common utopian techniques and motifs. Despite describing an unrealistic environment, the passage was understood as directly relevant to reality by readers throughout time, for example by Bradford. Following two Puritan readings, it is observed that biblical utopian texts have the potential of being applied in reality by those who see them as a call to action. If a literary utopia is attempted to be brought into reality, it becomes apparent that it marginalises those who are not utopian protagonists; in the case study passage, the non-Israelite tribes, in Bradford’s reading, the Native Nations in New England. The interplay of utopia and dystopia is explored and it is concluded that a definitive trait of literary utopias is their potential to turn into an experienced dystopia if enforced literally. This argument is supported by demonstrating that the utopian traits of the case study passage contain dystopian downsides if read from a different perspective. A contemporary utopian reading of the case study passage is proposed. Today utopian speculation most often appears in works of science fiction (SF). Motifs appearing in the case study passage are read as tropes familiar to a contemporary Bible reader from SF. Following D. Suvin’s SF theory, it is concluded that the Bible in the contemporary world can be understood as a piece of SF. It contains the juxtaposition of an estranged world with a reader’s experienced world as well as a potential utopian and dystopian message.

Since 2002, “degrowth” has made its way into the debate on ecology, economics, and our future. The present work questions Protestant theology through one of the main writers of this heterodox thinking: Serge Latouche. This French atheist economist makes a culturalist critique of the society of growth. He puts it on a threefold trial and calls for the creative decolonization of our shared imaginary, so as to move towards autonomous, convivial, and happy societies of frugal abundance. This position first of all leads theology to question growth. Based on biblical data, it is noticed that the Christian imaginary of growth enriches and contradicts the dominant growthist imaginary. Hence, two contributions to a theology of growth are provided: one about the command to get rich addressed to the disciple and to the church, where this kind of growth is subverted, another about plant growth and animal proliferation, where these kinds of growth are restored to favor

Abstract (sommario):
In May 1856 the EFS (the Swedish Evangelical Mission Society), influenced by the new evangelism-movement, was established as an “internal mission” within the Church of Sweden. During the same period the “new evangelism” revival movement established regional organizations in order to coordinate the movement in different parts of the country. These regional organizations consisted of the movement’s local mission societies in a province or part of a province of Sweden. This study will focus on democracy and theological identity in the EFS through an analysis of how the regional organizations acted, what role they played, how the EFS was influenced by them and how the EFS decided to establish its own regional organization. One result of the earlier tensions between the regional mission organizations and the EFS was the establishment of the independent organizations Mission Covenant Church of Sweden (Svenska Missionsförbundet) (1878-) and Mission Society of Bible faithful Friends (Missionssällskapet Bibeltrogna Vänner) (1911-). This investigation looks into 17 of 36 regional mission organizations that existed. The time frame of the investigation is from the establishment of the EFS in 1856 to the establishment of the regional structure of the EFS in 1922. The EFS changed over time. The change of society and wishes from the movement’s local mission societies and regional mission organizations were agents in this transformation. An important result of this research is that this transformation of the EFS proceeded at a slow pace and with the preservation of the EFS’s theological identity.

Nellist, Christine. "Towards an animal theology in Eastern Orthodox Christianity". Thesis, University of Winchester, 2017. http://repository.winchester.ac.uk/682/.

Abstract (sommario):
My thesis advances the overarching hypothesis that the Eastern Orthodox Church has sufficient teachings to develop a theology which tackles the difficult subject of animal suffering. However, during the review of theological academic literature I identified a gap between what might be termed Orthodox theory and its practice. In essence the overarching hypothesis is broken down into three component parts: i) That Eastern Orthodox teachings allow for the formulation of an ‘Animal Theology’ of the Eastern Orthodox Church; ii) That there is a gap between Orthodox theory and practice on this theme both at academic and pastoral level; iii) That the abuse and exploitation of animals has negative soteriological consequences for those who indulge in such practices; those who know but are indifferent to animal suffering and those who know and are concerned but fail to act in order to reduce or prevent that suffering. Different methodologies were used for the different areas of research which range from biblical exegesis and neo-patristic synthesis, to the formulation of new empirical research collected via questionnaires to animal protectionists in Cyprus and interviews with Orthodox theologians in Cyprus and the UK. In the final two chapters contemporary Eastern Orthodox voices are brought into play in order to advance theological reflection on the sin and evil inherent in animal suffering and the soteriological implications for those who abuse and exploit the non-human creation. Academic theology can often be abstract in nature and viewed by many as irrelevant to contemporary life. I do not believe this is the case and throughout this thesis I have provided examples of how Orthodox teachings can be applied to contemporary animal suffering issues. In addition I have provided an outline for a seminary project which focuses on a) the spiritual and ontological interconnectedness of God’s Creation; b) the seminarian’s role as Icon of Christ and c) how these two elements should dictate the priest’s treatment and relationship with animals and the environment. I have also provided frameworks for a Master’s Dissertation on the theme and an Eastern Orthodox Animal Protection group. Finally, it is worth noting the impact of this research thus far, which has resulted in the first Master’s Dissertation on the theme by an Eastern Orthodox priest; a public statement by the Holy Synod of Cyprus; the establishment of an Eastern Orthodox Animal Protection group in Cyprus and an academic paper presented at an international conference on Religion and Animal Protection by one of Orthodoxy’s leading theologians, Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. Leading Orthodox theologians are aware of this thesis and are supportive of its vision; as a result I believe the previously identified gap between the theory and the practice will reduce in the foreseeable future.

Decout, Maxime. "Albert Cohen : la « Geste des Juifs », des origines trouées aux déchirements messianiques". Thesis, Lyon 2, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009LYO20086.

Abstract (sommario):
Albert Cohen’s oeuvre revolves around the staging of Jewish identity. Though the novels only were meant as illustrations of Cohen’s desire to write a vast “epic of the Jews” through Solal’s adventures, it would seem that all his works, be they autobiographical, poetic or dramatic, are in actual fact informed by this desire. So central is Jewish identity, experienced both individually and collectively, to Cohen’s thought and creative process that it appears to be the core of his idiosyncratic aesthetics, and that his writing is based on the myths it creates. However indebted they might be to Homer’s works, the novels are nevertheless less a proper epic than the story of Jewish life in the Western world and offer a complex image of Jewish identity. The latter is constantly both denied and reaffirmed and its origins are forever presented as uncertain. This complexity and uncertainty permeates not only Cohen’s writing, but his ethical and existential thought. What is expressed is the desire for the advent of humanity through the Jewish Law, which will change the world. The fascinating, all pervasive figure of the Messiah is thus obsessively present in Cohen’s creative imagination and defines Solal as well as all the Jewish characters in the novels. Cohen’s complex and protean Messianism informs the staging of Jewish identity that will then take various literary forms

Abstract (sommario):

Daly, Marwa El. "Challenges and potentials of channeling local philanthropy towards development and aocial justice and the role of waqf (Islamic and Arab-civic endowments) in building community foundations". Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/16511.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

Lombaard, Christoffel Johannes Stephanus. "South African perspectives on the communication of the Bible in Church and society". Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25728.

Abstract (sommario):
Please note: This degree was awarded by the North-West University. Permission was granted to archive it in this database for teaching purposes Over the past eight years I have been engaged in researching the way in which the Bible has been brought to bear on a number of frameworks within the South African socio-historical context. It is of course not at all surprising that the Bible would become a part of the dialogues of the church; the Bible remains the source of the Christian identity of the churches in South Africa in a very particular way. The following could be posed as a general research question, albeit retroactively, as running centrally through all the research essays under review here: How was the Bible brought to communication within different spheres of the South African society? A total of nine publications are listed below, although in fact they represent seven research outputs. Note, thus, that number 5 below is a re-publication in somewhat altered form of number 9, and number 6 is, similarly, a re-publication of number 8. In both these cases the research was first published as chapters in books, and was then re-published in article format. The publications are listed in reverse chronological order, that is, starting with the most recent publication:

    Abstract (sommario):
English: The Naval Commissioner, Jaheel Brenton's passion and diligence regarding Bible distribution leads to the founding of the second Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Africa. This founding meeting takes place on 23 August 1820 under the chairmanship of the lieutenant-governor at the Cape, Sir Rufane Donkin. Only in 1965 does the Bible Society of South Africa become an independent Bible Society and became immediately a contributing Society towards the World Service Programme of the United Bible Societies. In 1970 the publication, God made it grow, appears, describing the history of the Bible Society of South Africa from 1820 to 1970. A comprehensive study of this has not hitherto been executed. Reports are published annually but are directed at the contributing donors of the Bible Society of South Africa with relevant information conveyed in the form of summaries. It is, however, remarkable that a missiological study has never been done on the activities of the Bible Society of South Africa. Considering the fact that the Bibles Society is the only organization in South Africa which officially translates, produces and distributes the Bible in all our indigenous languages, one must question the relevance of this organization's activities towards the development of missionary actions in South Africa and Southern Africa. Over the years the Bible Society's involvement regarding translation projects into the indigenous languages of our country has changed considerably. Nowadays, teams of translators are appointed in the service of the Bible Society. They do the translation on behalf of the Church, missionary organizations and the broader Christian community. The Bible Society of South Africa maintains a unique relationship with the Church, missionary organizations and with the broader Christian community and a wide spectrum of co-operation exists. The Bible Society is dependant on the churches, missionary organizations and the broader Christian community for human resources and financial support. Accordingly, churches, missionary organizations and the broader Christian community are dependant on the Bible Society for Bibles and other related material in the indigenous languages of our country. This study has indicated the presence of a missionary vision in the activities of the Bible Society of South Africa as well as their donors. Indeed this missionary vision has resulted in the establishment of Christianity in South Africa. This study clearly indicates that the Bible Society of South Africa is an integral part of the missionary playing-field in South Africa, also with regard to the future.

This thesis deals with the issue of globalization in Singapore with the historical-structural approach. Globalization is treated on the independent variable, which is used to examine the dependent at the triangular relationship among state、market and civil society in Singapore. Meanwhile, it is necessary to study and compare how globalization affects triangular relationship of three actors before and after Asian Financial Crisis. In the interaction view of State and market, it is suitable to the transformationalist thesis of globalization in Singapore, rather than to use the hyperglobalist thesis. Up to now, its situation is more likely what the transformationalist thesis predicts, namely globalization is producing a transformation strength in Singapore, and state instructs the path of economic development continually, further it also consolidates the legitimacy of Singaporean state by increasing economic stability. In the interaction view of market and civil society, the market plays the part of information supply role for civil society, at the same time, civil society had encountered the so-called "Asian Value" effect to prosper economy, People''s Action Party has conducted rebellious force from economics to politics, and it also let Singapore become the lightest Financial-Crisis country. But it is not a widespread acceptance value, it is only a special example. In the interaction view of state and civil society, state plays a role of surveillant toward civil society. In addition, civil society become more powerful against the state action by the diversification of social structure; simultaneously, it also consolidates the autonomy and capacity of Singaporean state.

ABSTRACT This study examines the adjustment of Chinese students in their assimilation into the Singapore society. It attempts to understand their state of societal assimilation, the challenges faced, and ways of coping and adjustment. This study adopts a qualitative analysis as its method. Five overseas students who had been in Singapore six months to four years were interviewed. The main findings are as follows. Firstly, the assimilation of overseas students into Singapore society varies from person to person, and also depends on personal choices and behavior. Four dimensions are involved: economic integration, behavioral adaptation, cultural acceptance and identity assimilation. The four dimensions can be summed up in the following factors: (1) economic integration in terms of moonlighting and starting business with friends; (2) behavioral adaptation in terms of forming deep relationships with locals, and selectively pursuing activities of interest despite the stress of studies and daily living; (3) cultural acceptance in terms of language, diet and environment; (4) identity assimilation in the sense of diminishing psychological distance over time –the majority of the overseas students intend to become Singapore permanent residents, but hesitate about citizenship. Secondly, in the process of assimilation, overseas Chinese students face five areas of challenges: cultural challenge, changes in the external environment, interpersonal conflict, psychological impact and economic pressure. Thirdly, Chinese students basically adopt either one of the two responses in face of challenges: active adaptation or passive coping. Active adaptation mainly involves personal factors, such as psychological adjustment, active exploration of the environment, braving and accepting reality, empowerment through religious beliefs and self-development, as well as seeking help from external resources (such as from friends, classmates, lecturers, church, pastors and family members). The passive coping response mainly involves a relatively pessimistic attitude in face of challenges. One is ‘forced’ by the greater environment to learn to get along, to make decisions independently, and to change one’s way of doing things and interacting with people. The researcher elaborates on the above research findings, and renders suggestions for overseas Chinese students in Singapore, related organizations, such as the government, religious groups and assistance bodies, and future research. Keywords: overseas Chinese student, societal assimilation, adjustment

Niven, Adam D'Arcy. "Bible study materials and the video medium - a practical theological analysis of video as a Bible study communicative medium". Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29875.

    Testo completo
    Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation presents a practical theological evaluation of Bible study materials which incorporate the video medium as part of their package. I begin by establishing a focus of practical theology which emphasises the importance of the development of an active reflective sojourning of the practical theologian. I conclude that:
Practical theology is concerned with establishing and cultivating the rhythm of action and reflection within the experience of the Christian community of faith. This is a process of listening to the Word of God and discerning to address the community of faith through proposing change, with all these tasks operating within a current context of the Christian faith and for the purpose of maintaining and perfecting the Christian community.
Following this, I present the established rhythm of action and reflection by drawing on a narrative of my experience and arrive at a perceived problem with the current development of Bible study materials that incorporate the video medium. The following thesis is proposed:
The Church has a responsibility to train and equip believers within the context of the relational community interacting with the Word of God so the community may grow in discernment and maturity. The Church has, and continues, to utilise different media to provide teaching and training on a mass scale. The current products being developed as Bible study materials (especially those incorporating the video medium) are failing to meet this responsibility.
From this position the study then presents a continuing sojourning through a theoretical and empirical investigation to explore the validity of the thesis and cultivate further my active reflection. The theoretical investigation provides three complimentary perspectives for evaluation: Cultural Value Systems; Communication Theories; and Pedagogical Approaches. The empirical exploration includes a Qualitative Document Analysis of the Bible Study Products which is supplemented by Qualitative Interviews of small group leaders from a local church setting. In conclusion, the thesis is re-evaluated against the outcomes of the study and a proposed change is presented for the purpose of maintaining and perfecting the Christian community. This draws attention to the tension between established cultures and the introduction of new technologies; the importance of a production focussed informed by a theology of small groups; the need for new media to be continually evaluated in their utilisation; and the need to recognise the dominant ‘message’ communicated by the combination of content and the medium. A closing narrative reflection of my experience is also included to illustrate the ongoing cultivation of the rhythm of action and reflection which this study has encouraged. Copyright

Butler, Lucas. ""Trusting the Faithful and Discreet Slave: A Critique of the Authority of the Jehovah's Witnesses"". Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/4865.

    Testo completo
    Abstract (sommario):
Jehovah's Witnesses claim to be the sole advocates for God's truth at this point in redemptive history. Basing this belief on their interpretation of Matthew 24:45-47 and Luke 12:42-45, the Watchtower Society proclaims that their organization is led by "the faithful and discreet slave" (FDS) of the end times. This FDS is the Governing Body of the Society, which has been charged with the responsibility of providing spiritual food for Jehovah's people. According to the Witnesses, to discount the message of the FDS is to ignore the voice of God. History reveals that the identity and the message of the FDS have changed since the conception of the Watchtower organization. The movement's founder, Charles Taze Russell, was first known as the FDS of Matthew 24 but lost the title after his death when the new leader of the group shifted the identity away from an individualistic understanding to a corporate one. After proclaiming for the bulk of the organization's history that the 144,000 anointed Witnesses were the FDS, the Society recently changed their understanding of this end times' servant in 2012. Currently, the FDS is only the anointed Witness men that are serving on the Governing Body of the Society. This progressive shift in the organization's understanding of the FDS and the eventual disappearance of these anointed Witnesses continues to necessitate theological realignments, which in turn lays the apologetic groundwork for evangelism to the Jehovah's Witnesses. As redemptive history continues to unfold, the Watchtower Society will be forced to clarify or reinterpret many of their foundational teachings. Such reinvention further opens the apologetic door for evangelism among disillusioned Witnesses. When the Watchtower organization again searches to recast their leadership along with their message, authentic Christians must be ready and seeking to direct Witnesses to the unchanging message of the gospel.

    Abstract (sommario):
This study falls within the area of the Bible in African Christianity, particularly ordinary readers' appropriation of and interpretation of the Bible. It seeks to explore, firstly, the processes of the encounter between the Bible and the indigenous people of Tanzania, specifically the Gogo in central region. Secondly, this thesis seeks to identify some interpretative resources and emerging interpretative practices that have continued into the present of ordinary readers of the Bible. This exploration is done by tracing the mission activities of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in Tanzania, which began in 1844. The work of the Universities Mission to Central Africa (UMCA) is also examined, particularly the role it has played in making the Book "open" to the indigenous, through translation. Although there is continuity between past and present readings, this thesis demonstrates that ordinary readings are not static, they are dynamic; and over the years neo-indigenous interpretative moves have emerged which are a combination of both missionary and indigenous interpretative resources and methods. This reality is evident in the contemporary phenomenon of women and youths' songs in central Tanzania. These songs are creative interpretations of the Bible from an ordinary readers' perspective. There is a challenge to trained readers of the Bible to realise that biblical interpretation is not the preserve of the "professionals"; ordinary readers in the parishes, in cities, towns and villages, do interpret the Bible as well. To be relevant to the Tanzanian context, academic interpreters have to consciously take into account the resources and strategies of ordinary readers, which are demonstrated in their vernacular languages, oral narratives, religious experience, songs, proverbs and wise sayings. This will mean deeply understanding the local languages, Cigogo and others, listening to ordinary interpretations of the Bible, listening to the music and tunes of ordinary readers, as well as reading the vernacular Bible. Lastly, this study offers some suggestions for further research which, I hope, will bring refr study falls within the area of the Bible in African Christianity, particularly ordinary readers' appropriation of and interpretation of the Bible. Serfontein, Johan. "An Old Testament perspective on imagining in a changing society : Ezekiel as case study". Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/6540.

    Testo completo
    Abstract (sommario):
The rapid changes in society today have caused many a leader in different environments to admit that they feel overwhelmed by, and inadequate to face the reality that this brings along. Our society is, according to many, in a transition, or as Roxburgh (2010) calls it, in an “in-between time”. This “in-between time” can be labelled as post-modern, post-colonial, post-democratic, or whatever language seems fitting; the fact of the matter is that studies are starting to show that leaders are struggling to lead in this changing landscape. This has also become particularly true in church leadership. This issue has been visited by many practical theologians of late. What has not been done yet was to visit this problem from an Old Testament perspective and to see if the Old Testament can contribute to this issue. In this study the Old Testament prophetic book of Ezekiel is taken as case study to see if it can shed any light on the matter. Ezekiel as prophet needs to speak to an audience that is also in rapidly changing circumstances. The lives of most Judeans changed with the first Babylonian exile of 597 BCE and got worse with the final exile in 586 BCE that also included the fall of Jerusalem. Suddenly the “known” became “unknown” and the familiar surroundings and lifestyle of Judea were substituted by the unfamiliar surroundings of Babylon and life as exiles. In these times people look to their prophets and their leaders to make sense of the reality and to offer some hope for the future. Ezekiel responds to this with communication. His communication criticises and energises. His communication seems vivid and metaphorically loaded and in the end stirs up imagination. This imagination gives clarity and hope for the future. What this study therefore attempts to do is to look for the process of this communication. It tries to find the different stages that Ezekiel goes through in his communication process. Out of these stages or steps it then builds a process of communication that is suggested as a possible Old Testament perspective on a modern-day problem. In this endeavour it proposes to build a bridge between practical issues of church life, leadership in the church and Biblical Studies.

Mollett, Margaret. "Creeping crusade : interpretation, discourse and ideology in the left behind corpus, rhetoric and society in the light of revelation 7". Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/4044.

    Abstract (sommario):
While the Left Behind Corpus may be commended for being an effective tool for evangelism, the question arises of whether or not its themes engender a theology of extermination, indeed a creeping crusade; “creeping” in the sense of it being a movement of stealth and not one of high visibility – “crusade” in the sense of a militaristic movement, similar to that of the medieval crusades. I span my research across three artefacts in the LB Corpus in terms of its embedded interpretation, discourse and ideology; in fact three separate entities for explanatory purposes, but in effect they form a single entity of interaction and cross-production. I am therefore extending many niches of research and critical discourse to what I envisage as the wider context of the LB Corpus: its potential for social construction, and its enigmatic connections with other apocalyptic-driven and crusade-like movements. Based as it is on “consistent literalism,” the LB Corpus can only be countered by an exegetical approach that situates the foundational text for the Left Behind phenomenon, Revelation 7, in its historical setting, while taking cognisance of the particularities of early Christianity, with its Jewish heritage lived out in a Graeco-Roman environment. In offering an alternative reading, I take some cues from Vernon Robbins‟ socio-rhetorical approach and draw from perspectives of theorists across several disciplinary fields in pointing out anomalies in a consistent literalism driven interpretation of Revelation 7.

    Abstract (sommario):
This study deals with Francisco G. Penzotti, a Bible colporteur and church planter, opening in 1888 in Peru a branch of the American Bible Society. But the Peruvian con-stitution prohibited any public, non-Catholic religious activities. The country's situation for decades had been confrontation between clerical conserva-tism and progressive liberal forces, thus dividing Peruvian society. Penzotti became a catalyst in this confrontation at a time of critical importance, thus revealing the frailty of the Roman Catholicism as an integrating force in this society. He becomes a "human interface" in the struggle for tolerance and freedom of worship, involving the participa-tion of important sectors of Peruvian society. This paper describes the historical background and Protestant activities prior to Pen-zotti, then his work and person. A missiological summary interprets Penzottis success, acting as a human link between two distinct eras and clearing the way for a future of tolerance and religious freedom in Peru.

Mann, Randolph Terrance. "Redaction criticism of the Synoptic Gospels: its role in the inerrancy debate within North American evangelicalism". Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2206.

    Testo completo
    Abstract (sommario):
Evangelicals have been characterized as a people committed to the Bible with historical roots to the fundamentalists who were engaged in controversy with liberals in North America at the beginning of the twentieth century. Harold Lindsell's book, The Battle For The Bible (1976), led to a great deal of discussion about inerrancy among evangelicals which resulted in major conferences and the publication of a number of books and articles discussing inerrancy in the subsequent decade. The principal doctrinal statement of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) has been from its inception a statement on inerrancy. The inerrancy debate among evangelicals took a new direction with the publication of R H Gundry's commentary on Matthew (1982). This sparked a debate concerning redaction criticism and the compatibility of using the historical-critical methodology while maintaining a commitment to the doctrine of inerrancy. Just when the debate appeared to be dying down the publication of the results of the Jesus Seminar (1993) led to several responses from evangelicals. The most controversial publication was The Jesus Crisis (1998) which accused evangelicals and some within the ETS of embracing the same methodology as those of the Jesus Seminar, refueling the debate again. Consequently this debate amongst evangelicals, particularly those associated with the ETS has continued for almost two decades. The debate has ranged over a variety of issues related to historical criticism and the study of the Gospels, including presuppositions, the Synoptic Problem, the role of harmonization, and whether the Gospels provide a strict chronology of the life of Jesus. The role of form and tradition criticism and the criteria of authenticity and whether the Gospel writers were faithful historians or creative theologians have also been points of contention in the debate. The languages that Jesus spoke and whether the Gospels preserve the ipsissima verba or vox have highlighted the differing views about the requirements of inerrancy. The redaction criticism debate has proven to have a significant role in exposing differences in methodology, definitions, presuppositions, and boundaries among evangelicals and members of the ETS.
