Testo completoFrom 1961 to 1989, Berlin is a divided city, split by a concrete wall separating the eastern part, capital city of the German Democratic Republic, from the western one, isolated island of the German Federal Republic. Frontline of the Cold War, the cameras captured it.Filming Berlin was not only depicting a precise and bound urban territory, it was bringing to the screen a space ruled by a very significant historical, social and political context conveying strong specificities. Two systems of representation of the urban space coexisted as soon as 1945, fueled by each side of town’s own elements and specific aesthetic forms. From August 13th 1961, the day the Wall was built, the reality of the division of the city is made concrete-solid. Cinema was made the witness of this reality. These pictures, of the Self, of the Other, can be considered as products of both societies, with their own symbolisms, their sociocultural codes and parallel histories. As such, they are indicative of the way Berlin has been shown. Both imageries take part in the construction of a plural urban identity, that sometimes tends towards a shape-shifting hallmark, whose aspects it seems important to question. This PhD in cinematic studies endeavours to describe, analyse and interpret the filmed expressions of this alterity, this singular urban space. At the crossroad of several disciplinary fields and in a geo-centered approach, it offers an essay on cinematic topography

Testo completoThis thesis focuses on a handful of Hollywood films set in Berlin (Berlin-Films) in the early years of the Cold War, from the end of World War II (1945) to the construction of the Berlin Wall (1961). In this thesis, theoretical emphasis is placed on the perspective these films provide on the Cold War, a period marked by ideological and political tensions and conflicts between the United States and the USSR (and their respective allies). The Cold War will be examined here through the lens of gender studies, specifically analyzing the gender-based social relations within the city of Berlin, symbolizing the defeat of Nazi Germany and the vision of a future denazified, demilitarized, decentralized, deindustrialized, and democratized Germany (as advocated by the Potsdam Conference in 1945). Berlin is also portrayed as significantly feminized and under American influence. In other words, this thesis aims to analyze the sensitivity of Hollywood cinema (but also West and East German films) to the upheavals induced in the field of gender and family social relations by the Cold War and external factors such as production, distribution, reception, commercial, diplomatic, and historical considerations. Even though they provide undeniable documentary features for the American moviegoers of that time (to whom these films were primarily addressed) regarding Germany's defeat, the reception of these Berlin-Films, both by the press and the spectators, seems divided between a desire for realism and a wish to escape daily life. Many critics have often criticized these films for reducing U.S./Germany international relations to a set of invariants or a collection of stereotypes. Transforming a political conflict into a romantic one, the GI/Fräulein couple becomes an allegory of international relations. However, rethinking the victory of the United-States (or the defeat of Germany) through the lens of gender relations allows us to reconsider the traditional stereotyped victor/vanquished antagonism and its evolutions studied by historians such as Michaela Hoenicke Moore or Brian Etheridge. These runaway romances set abroad, in a perpetual quest for realism, thus help the Americans negotiate the reorientation of a story centered on World War II and Nazism to one focused on the Cold War and Communism. They exemplify the ideological transformation of the American relationship with their former adversaries (from enemies to allies), a transformation illustrated by characters with damaged, fluctuating and unstable identities, especially among female protagonists in the Berlin-Films

Testo completoThe Nabokov studies have tended to ignore the possible influence of the German culture on Nabokov’s works. This position springs from the writer’s often quoted words, which stress that, although he lived in Germany, he could not speak German and avoided any intercourse with the German world. Russian emigration certainly constituted a state within the state but the borders between the Russian and German worlds were not so impenetrable. Nabokov spent fifteen years in Berlin and his books were translated and published in German by a German publishing house. There were several projects for screen adaptations of his works, in particular for the novel King, Queen, Knave. While in Berlin, he wrote at least two novels, King, Queen, Knave and Kamera Obskura (Laughter in the Dark for the revisited version by Nabokov), and a series of short stories which describe the German world. All this undermines the principle established about the ignorance of German influence. Our thesis aims at reading Nabokov’s works in the context of the German contemporary art, in particular Expressionist aesthetics. We consider three major issues, namely the distortion of the psyche, which leads to an inner division of the self, the ambivalence of the female figure and the representation of the big city. Thus an extensive analysis allows us to reveal links with German silent cinema and with painting which had eluded researchers so far. The present work aims at introducing a new dimension in the reading of Nabokov’s works and at restoring them to the cultural context of Berlin in which they were created

Testo completoBased on the analysis of a particular city (Berlin), this thesis tries to answer to the following question : historically and geographically speaking where and how do the places of artistic creation appear, how do they grow and renew themselves ? The work is divided into three parts. The first part consists in a theoretical approach which applies to analyse and to clarify the terms of the subject ("culture" and "metropolis") and to define, "in fine" the "cultural metropolis" from the angle of creativity. The second part, in a geohistorical viewpoint, tries to explain the movement of the cultural history of Berlin i, order to understand the dynamism of its cultural geography. The "roaring twenties", the golden age of Berlin's culture, are particularly analysed : because it is the moment when the "Grosstadt" becomes "Welstadt", a global city, the culture which influences all Europe. The third part concentrates on the contemporary period (1989-2000) and tries, 10 years after the fall of the wall, to take stock of the recomposition of Berlin's cultural landscape and of the new position of Berlin in Germany and Europe, as a cultural metropolis which has become capital again. The conclusion, tries to demonstrate that the cultural, "Sonderweg" a very rich notion which should be rediscovered by the geographers, after having allowed Berlin to express itself on an original way during the 1990's , is now letting up and making room to the "new Berlin" of the year 2000 : a capital city in search of normality

Testo completoThis thesis is an ethnographic analysis of a group of young Muslim females who are participating in a religious organisation in Berlin that is part of the contemporary Islamic resurgence. In this religious organisation, youth mostly with migration background are engaged in studying Islamic scriptures, learning social practices and body comportments that are considered as essential in crafting a religious self. The study is concerned with how young people learn to live out Islam in a religious 'faith community' and how religious identification is constructed, formed and negotiated at a group level. Through ethnographic description, the everyday life of young Muslims living in Berlin, their struggles, challenges, desires and motivations, are presented within a framework of understanding of the interrelationship between the youth's individual religiosity and that of a wider religious group, in addition to how a religious identification is a creative process, continuously being crafted within social spaces and structures. The process of developing a Muslim identity or the crafting of a religious self is examined by looking at the urban sphere in which the youth play out their religious identity; how the teaching of specific body comportments together with forming a religiously oriented ethos and frame of mind take place; the symbols of community where focus is drawn on the formation of a religious female youth culture and how the practice of veiling should be understood as not only an individual choice of action, but also a group oriented practice. The focus on being a 'correct' Muslim and the felt need to improve the stained image of Islam and Muslims in Europe and to represent Islam 'correctly' bring forth social pressure from themselves, from their peers and from the anonymous Muslim population on how the youth should behave in the public sphere

Testo completoSince the end of the Second World War, the German question conditions the relations between the four conquerors of the third Reich. These relations deteriorate above all in berlin where the four occupying powers are direct in contact. The apparition of the berlin problem reveals the impossible understanding between east and west about Germany. The berlin blockade begins the cold war and the militarization of the international relations. The airlift of the Anglo-Americans replies to the threat of the soviets. During the blockade, the United States and USSR learn to consider their mutual forces and to control a crisis. The era of deterrent begins with the berlin blockade. This event has also a moral and psychological importance: the blockade conceals the Nazi barbarity and reinstate the German people

Testo completoIn this doctoral dissertation devoted to “the natures of Berlin’s Tiergarten”, Jonathan Gaquère offers a reflection inspired by Bruno Latour’s research work about multinaturalism as well as Ingo Kowarik’s about Stadtnatur. By making a difference between baroque, landscape and environmental natures, he demonstrates how the Tiergarten park is made of inherited natures. These inherited natures are deeply impacted by the “metropolism” of events of the June 17th Street. This “metropolism” is conveyed within this park by the memorial nature of the places belonging to the German “negative memory” (Marcel Tambarin) and by the haven-nature of homeless people. This geographical reflection ends with an analysis of pick-up places which greatly qualifies the previous studies dealing with this topic and which considers a “right to nature.”

Testo completoWith German unification in full swing, berlin is going through another unwonted upheaval of its territorial integration, on both the micro and macro levels the objective of the present thesis is to explain the background and postulates behind a new project in regional planning geared not only to transcend the various consequences of the former division, but also to make best use of the amenities left behind and try to protect this unusual city and its environs from the unfortunate mutations that have affected other western metropolitan regions. This virtual construction of a new "Berlin region" is being jointly worked upon by the Berlin and Brandenburg federal lander, and between the latter and the federation itself. Two areas of public action are involved, each obeying different logics, at times convergent, at others divergent: on the one hand, a regional planning and development policy, based on the progressive definition of reference documents, and on the other a transport infrastructure development policy

Testo completoJaquand, Corinne. "Le grand Berlin et l'anticipation américaine : infrastructures, paysage et forme urbaine du IIe au IIIe Reich". Paris, EHESS, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003EHES0034.
Testo completoThis doctorale deals with the reception of Americanism in the field of German architecture and city- planning. The analysis focuses on the metropolis of Berlin from the Wilhems' Empire to the III Reich. The problematic is articulated to the topos of modernity, understood as a process of modernization - socially, technically and aesthetically. We have examined how the different trends of German modernity - from the radical to the conservative, have referred to American modernity. The corpus concerns the edition of architecture and urban ingineery (reviews, books, essays, exhibitions catalogues and conferences proceedings). The subject is developed with four topics : metropolitan architecture and debates on skyscrapers : urban transformations through transport infrastructures, railroad and then automobile ; development of urban and regional park systems : patterns of urban extensions relates to Fordist city. The first chapter described diachronically the German protagonists of the A mericanism in regards to three epochs : the first, the urban reform supported by experts ; the second, the years of avant-gardism which opposed radical Moderns against conservative Moderns ; the third, from the Great Depression to the end of nazism, saw the American model rejected even if the modernization of the country went forward. Methodologically, this doctorate refers to the theories of Jauss and Sulzer on reception in literature. In questions the national identity of urban design and architecture as a culture and practices. It proceeds from the hypothesis that the American model was used to formulate a cultural project on modernity, specifically German. It comes out to the notion of "geo-cultural eras" which are characterized by slow evolutions of the conceptual, legal and institutional patterns of concepts and which could be submitted, but punctually, to changing paradigms of professional contexts

Testo completoAfter the reunification of its territory, the Federal Republic of Germany decided to transfer its Parliament and its government from Bonn to Berlin, where they had been located since 1949. This relocation of power gives the opportunity to question territory and urban dynamics in relation to the capital city function. This function has evolved specifically in the urban networks, with logics of memory, symbols and representation of power. To be a capital means at the same time to get an urban function with particular employment possibilities, social networks, and significant influence within the state as well as beyond national boundaries. This research emphasizes the case of power districts, because they carry their own structures in relation with the daily practice of politics, administration and of other related sectors like diplomacy, media and lobbying. Internal structures of these power centres do not only show urban planning choices but a whole conception of the role of a state and reveals the national history. The transfer of the German parliament and government from Bonn to Berlin allows to investigate these themes with different space and time scales. Berlin inherits a spatial structure that was developed in the contexts of Bonn's democratic culture. At the same time, however, Berlin's urban fabric shows traces of its history as a centre of power under the Empire, the Nazi Regime or during the GDR period. Spaces of politics in the German capital become a testing laboratory which reveals the behaviour of the political function from the street to the global level

Testo completoBetween 1860 and 1930, Berlin underwent an unprecedented growth cycle: while its population increased eightfold, its area increased fiftyfold. In the space of one generation, it became a very large city. This gigantic leap in scale, unparalleled in Europe, not only raised doubts about the viability of this new urban form, but also changed the kind of everyday experiences one had in the city. For millions of city dwellers, it was a matter of coping with new phenomena such as residential overcrowding, crowded transport, longer journey times between home and work, the risk of street accidents, the acceleration of rhythms and the artificialisation of urban environments. Destabilized by this spatial and social mutation, German society embarked on a twofold adaptation process: an adaptation of the very large city to the city dwellers, and an adaptation of the city dwellers to the very large city. While the former was promoted by policies to improve housing, reintroduce nature into the city, and prevent street accidents, the latter was made possible by the spontaneous acquisition of new routine skills by city dwellers to cope with congestion, to evolve in a mechanized environment, and to deal with an overload of sensory stimuli. Even if the serious crises that affected Germany from 1914 onwards disrupted the course of the city, a process of normalization of metropolitan life can thus be observed, which partly invalidates the doubts that had arisen with the explosive urbanization

Testo completoThis work deals with national identity problems regarding the social transformation that German people have been faced with through the radical political changes before and after the German Reunification. The author analyses on one hand conflicts of national identity for East and West German people within the process of the reunification and their consequences till today, on the other hand she gives a perspective of resolution to these conflicts and in the frame of the construction of a common national identity. The author relies on a on a self-carried out qualitative research with young Berliner students who embody the generation after the "Berliner Wall", and considers the theory of socialization as an essential indicator who lends two regimes with opposite ideological organizations to shape very dissimilar identifications. A perspective to the Korean re-unification in the light of the German reunification is proposed at the end of this work

Testo completoThis thesis analyses the reaction to and perception of Leni Riefenstahl and her two major Nazi propaganda films "Triumph of Will" ("Triump des Willens") and "Olympia" ("Fest der Volker", "Fest der Schonheit")" in France, between 1926 (year of her first role as an actress) and 2002 (her 100th birthday). It attempts to understand the development of relations between France and Germany through the prism of Leni Riefenstahl and her films, which were vehicles of an image of Germany that inspired France in the 30's, but that became unacceptable for post-war France. Through the perception of Leni Riefenstahl and her films, it is France's point of view that is put across, its view of Germany and, through a mirror effect, its own view of itself

Testo completoThis research includes Wim Wenders' films produced until 1989 and centers around the interviews, essays and articles of the German producer. The method chosen, founded on Freud’s or Klein’s psychanalysis and C. G. Jung's or Mircea Eliade's hermeneutics, underlines the relation between history and the different cinema productions, in view of a more universal perspective due to the archetypal dimension of images. According to the directing typology of Gilbert Durand, the analysis pivots successively around the symbols of opposition, fusion and conjunction, seen in relation of the individual and the family, then of time and space and finally in film creation itself. The limits of antagonism, then of fusion lead progressively to a conciliation between masculine and feminine, history and eternity, death and rebirth. If this seems to have been achieved in recent films, however the synthesis remains largely in the field of art

Testo completoThe reunification of Germany and its reinvention as a new nation-state temporally coincided with the acceleration of globalisation and the enlargement of the European Union, reactivating the problems of identity and of German memory. How does German cinema reflect this double process? How does it contribute to reunited Germany’s construction of identity? The notion of place, fundamentally linked to that of identity, is also reactivated by these events; surprisingly, cinema studies seem to have overlooked it. What does a close analysis of German cinema places tell us about Germany’s identity and the identity of its cinema? Instead of putting forward definitive answers, we propose a thorough theoretical reflection on the notions of identity and place(s), as well as on related notions, such as national identity, identity of a national cinema, nation, Heimat and memory. Moreover, we will analyse the cultural loam on which reunited Germany’s cinema developed, retracing some of the cultural discourses put into place, in order to better understand the issues they address. Germany’s sites of memory (“lieux de mémoire”) in particular seem to be a place for dialogue and confrontation with other disciplines, French or German, concerned with the coupled notions of identity and place(s) and identity and memory. We pursue this discussion throughout the analysis of our corpus, consisting for the most part on filmmakers grouped under the designation of “Berlin school” and interviewed within the context of an enquiry focused on the notion of place(s)
