Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In order to improve the working condition stability of rotating machinery bearings, an automatic fault detection method of rotating machinery bearings based on complexity analysis is proposed. The parameters of rotating machinery bearings are detected by using discrete sensor detection method, and the fault characteristics of rotating machinery bearings are extracted by fault type parameter extraction method. The complexity of rotating machinery bearings is detected by wavelet transform and fuzzy logic analysis. Considering the load mutation, noise disturbance, control strategy and other factors of rotating machinery bearings, the fault diagnosis and feature analysis model of rotating machinery bearings is established. The clustering and feature detection of rotating machinery bearings’ fault types are realized by the method of discrete complexity fusion clustering. Based on adaptive feedback compensation and parameter estimation, the output diagnostic error is taken as the fault detection index parameter, and the feature estimation in normal state and fault state is realized by harmonic level detection, so as to realize automatic fault detection of rotating machinery bearings. The simulation results show that this method has high accuracy and small deviation in fault detection of rotating machinery bearings, which improves the ability of automatic fault diagnosis.

Abstract (sommario):
This article considers problems arising from conventional techniques used to diagnose faults in the rolling-element bearings of rotor-bearing systems, with dampers used in centrifugal milk processing machinery. Such machines include milk separators and related processing machinery. The article asserts that where the rotor-bearing system is equipped with vibration dampers, conventional fault diagnostic measurements produce inadequate results. Hence, for rotor-bearing systems of this type, this article suggests a different way to diagnose faults in bearings and monitor conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
Gas foil bearing has been widely used in high-speed turbo machinery due to its oil-free, wide temperature range, low cost, high adaptability, high stability and environmental friendliness. In this paper, state-of-the-art investigations of gas foil bearings are reviewed, mainly on the development of the high-speed turbo machinery in China. After decades of development, progress has been achieved in the field of gas foil bearing in China. Small-scale applications of gas foil bearing have been realized in a variety of high-speed turbo machinery. The prospects and markets of high-speed turbo machinery are very broad. Various high-speed turbomachines with gas foil bearings have been developed. Due to the different application occasions, higher reliability requirements are imposed on the foil bearing technology. Therefore, its design principle, theory, and manufacturing technology should be adaptive to new application occasions before mass production. Thus, there are still a number of inherent challenges that must be addressed, for example, thermal management, rotor-dynamic stability and wear-resistant coatings.

Abstract (sommario):
Oil-film hydrodynamic bearings are one of the most common forms of bearing used in rotating machinery. Because of their effect on system unbalance response and stability, care has to be exercised in the design of machines running in hydrodynamic bearings—for example they cannot usually be used in machines operating at high rotational speeds when the steady load on the bearing is low. A novel form of hydrodynamic bearing which incorporates recesses in the bearing surface has been proposed by the authors which improves the dynamic characteristics; however, earlier work has not fully assessed the steady load characteristics of such bearings vis-à-vis conventional bearings for example. The aim of this paper is to present the results of experimental work on several designs of the proposed novel bearings, to assess the bearing's performance and to compare it with that of conventional bearings. The results of the work show that the steady load-carrying capacity is adversely affected by the inclusion of recesses in the bearing surface, but that this is only a marginal effect provided that the number of recesses and their geometry are selected with care.

Bearings are important components of most machinery and their working conditions influence the operation of the entire machinery. Even if bearings are being used under excellent conditions, sooner or later material fatigue will occur. Besides other things poor operating environment contaminated or peculiarly moist areas and improper handling practices cause premature failures. This article focuses on vibration analysis methods for detecting bearing failures and presents a special lifetime test procedure.

Abstract (sommario):
Industrial machinery often breakdowns due to faults in rolling bearing. Bearing diagnosis plays a vital role in condition monitoring of machinery. Operating conditions and working environment of bearings make them prone to single or multiple faults. In this research, signals from both healthy and faulty bearings are extracted and decomposed into empirical modes. By analyzing different empirical modes from 8 derived empirical modes for healthy and faulty bearings under different fault sizes, the first mode has the most information to classify bearing condition. From the first empirical mode eight features in time domain were calculated for various bearing conditions like healthy, rolling element fault, outer and inner race fault. The feature extraction of vibration signal based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is extensively explored and applied in diagnosis of fault in rolling bearings. This paper presents mathematical analysis for selection of valid Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) of EMD. These chosen features are trained and classified using different classifiers. Among them K-star classifier is most reliable to categorize the bearing defects.

Abstract (sommario):
Radial ball bearings made of metal, ceramics and plastics are commonly used as important components in industrial machinery. Usage of high performance engineering plastic polymers is increasing progressively as a replacement for metal components due to the latest markets demands. Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is a promising material for precision-machined custom bearings, products that are expected to suit special market needs. In the present study, PEEK radial ball bearings were manufactured by lathe machining under different parameters and their rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistance under water lubricated conditions was investigated. We observed the surface of the bearings prior and after testing by laser confocal microscope. The wear loss was measured by weighing the bearings before and after test. Cracks and/or flaking failures were identified on the bearing surface after testing. From the RCF tests results, we found that, at water lubricated conditions, crack initiation occurred later in the material that was machined at slower feed rate while at dry condition, the feed rate had little influence on the wear loss and cracking. Wear loss in the case of bearings tested under water was much less severe than that of bearings tested at dry conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Foil bearings are self-acting hydrodynamics bearings used to support lightly loaded high speed rotating machinery. The advantages that they offer to process fluid lubricated machines usingworking fluid as a lubricant (ambient air) physically non-contacting high speed operation. Foil bearings have been considered as an alternative to conventional bearings with the capacity to cater for high-speeds and hostile environment (high temperature). However, the lack of load carrying capacity at relatively lower speeds limits their applications in heavy turbo machinery and as such are highly suitable in lightly loaded, high speed turbo machinery like small gas turbines. This paper discusses the design and assessment of dynamic characteristics in terms of load carrying capabilities as a function of speed, gap between the bearing and the runner as well as shape of foils for an air foil thrust bearing. The effects of various bearing parameters like foil thickness, number of foils fixed circumferentially and along the axis of rotation and with foil geometry configuration. Characteristics of performance defined essentially in terms of load carrying capabilities and static stiffness have been used for evaluation. Experiments were conducted both for angular foils (with inner edge height less than outer edge height) and square foils by varying number of foils. The experimental results shows that the effect of foil configuration enhances the load carrying capabilities of air foil thrust bearing.

Abstract (sommario):
Machinery components undergo wear and tear over time due to regular usage, necessitating the establishment of a robust prognosis framework to enhance machinery health and avert catastrophic failures. This study focuses on the collection and analysis of vibration data obtained from roller bearings experiencing various fault conditions. By employing a combination of techniques sourced from existing literature, distinct configurations within vibration datasets were examined to pinpoint the primary defects in roller bearings. The significant features identified through this analysis were utilized to formulate optimized stochastic model equations. These models, developed separately for inner and outer race fault features in comparison to healthy bearing features under random conditions, offer valuable insights into machinery prognosis. The application of these models aids in effective maintenance management, optimization of machinery performance, and the minimization of catastrophic failures and downtime, thereby contributing to overall machinery reliability.

Abstract (sommario):
This PhD project is set out to develop a type of hybrid journal air bearings with reduced reliance on the supply of compressed air for mobile turbomachinery applications. The research work covers hydrostatic and hybrid journal air bearings with non-compliant clearance boundaries. The approach adopted combined numerical analysis based on CFD and experimental verification of the designs. The research can be divided into three sections. In the first section, numerical approaches to model hydrostatic and hybrid journal air bearings with a fixed clearance boundary were developed based on finite difference method (FDM) and finite volume method (FVM) respectively. In the second and third section, theoretical and experimental studies were performed on hydrostatic and hybrid journal air bearings. Performance of the bearings was investigated in non-rotational and rotational conditions. The analysis on stability and natural frequencies of rotor bearing system was performed using the linear bearing model. The unbalance responses of the rotor in the test rig were predicted using non-linear transient analysis and measured experimentally from 50k rpm to 120k rpm in rotor speed. Through the theoretical and experimental investigations of the hybrid journal air bearings, the objectives of the project have been implemented and the aims have been met.

Abstract (sommario):
Porous air bearings enjoy some important advantages over conventional air bearing types such as increased load carrying capacity, higher stiffness and improved damping. However, these types of bearings have yet to find widespread acceptance due to problems with obtaining materials with consistent permeability, instability issues relating to the volume of gas trapped at the bearing surface in the pores, and manufacturing the bearing without altering the permeability. Using a series of fine grades of alumina powder to minimise surface pore volume it has been demonstrated that it is possible to consistently and reproducibly manufacture porous bearings by injection moulding and slip casting. The relationship between powder size, processing conditions, porosity, mechanical properties and fluid flow characteristics were experimentally determined. The temperature of processing and the green density were found to be the controlling parameters in the resulting fluid flow properties for a given powder size, Test bearings were produced from the range of processing conditions investigated. It was found that the fine powder size bearings were stable over the entire range of test conditions irrespective of their initial manufacturing route. The most important consideration for the bearing performance was the quality of manufacture. The bearings were found to be sensitive to the flatness of their working surface and quality of fit in their test holder. The bearings were compared with published theories for load capacity and stiffness. A reasonable agreement was found with load carrying capacity once a correction for surface roughness was incorporated. Stiffness predictions provided a useful tool for the analysis and prediction of properties such as optimum values of permeability for a given geometry, if certain allowances are made.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis work introduces a new sort of mechatronic hydrodynamic journal bearing for controlling vibrations in rotating machinery. This mechatronic design aims at improving an increasingly demanded bearing. The new mechatronic fluid pivot journal bearing is built upon a tilting pad journal bearing with a spherical pivot modified to inject pressurized oil into the pivot-pad gap. It is pursued that the bearing properties can be affected via controlling the pivot behaviour. The initial concept is presented followed by the design of each subsystem. An isothermal model is utilized. Results show a lab-size bearing ready for being experimentally validated. It is concluded that the proposed design poses a solution for common problems of hertzian contact based pivot hydrodynamic bearings.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a revolutionary approach of using a fluid-lubricated bearing for both traditional functions (load support, damping, and heat removal) and to actively control the rotor dynamics of rotating machinery. We will discuss how its use in the design of next generation turbomachinery can yield dramatic benefits. This includes an increase in efficiency, operational life, fault diagnostic, and reductions in machine size, weight, and cost. With the use of hydrostatic instead of hydrodynamic lubrication, traditional lubricants can be replaced by fluids more friendly to the process and environment. In this paper a comparison between the new hydrostatic bearing (Bently ServoFluid™ Control Bearing) and active magnetic bearings (AMB) will be presented. The Bently ServoFluid™ Control Bearing is an active controlled externally pressurized (a hybrid hydrostatic) bearing using fluid restoring force to compensate for rotor-related forces. It has the positive features of rolling element, fluid film and magnetic bearings with fewer negative attributes. The fluid restoring forces provide static and dynamic motion control similar to magnetic bearings, but with significantly larger compensation forces and with higher stiffness control. This revolutionary approach enables machinery owners to identify, understand and compensate for rotor system forces, an improvement over simply using vibration (motion) information for machinery diagnostics. This allows more complete diagnostics and prognostics of machine health. The bearing can be used to apply known perturbation forces to the rotor. Perturbation forces enable the determination of rotor system stiffness, and subsequent changes, thus improving machinery diagnostics. It can also provide information, such as the mechanical parameters governing the motion, system linearity, and stability margins for more accurate modeling of machines. Test results will be included to show experimentally determined transfer functions of each of the control loop elements, and predicted rotor forces. A typical root locus plot will be shown demonstrating how the characteristics change with bearing stiffness. Prototype machines, with both low viscosity fluid (water) and typical viscous fluid (T-10 turbine oil), have been built, tested, and successfully operated.

Abstract (sommario):
A major limitation of AMB supported machinery is their dependence on auxiliary or backup bearings in the event that the magnetic bearings lose power due to control system failure. These backup bearings should be designed to withstand the severe loads encountered after the AMB failure when the rotor drops onto them. This has prompted the development of general purpose finite element based, non-linear transient analysis programs capable of evaluating shock loading, blade loss and rotor drop phenomena experienced in rotors supported by AMBs. Previous testing and results have been made for a single AMB drop or both AMBs of a two bearing rotor. The current interest also includes the multiple AMB supported machinery systems, i.e., systems with more than two AMB or auxiliary bearings. This paper reviews the method of rotor drop analysis for AMB bearing systems. A commercially available program, DyRoBeS, is then applied to four different rotor designs to evaluate their rotor drop transient response. The total power loss rotor drop results of four different rotor systems will be discussed for assumed backup bearing conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
Rolling element bearings are essential machine elements in the rotating machinery. Extensive research has been conducted to study the dynamics of ball bearings, while studies related to spherical roller bearings are short-shrifted. On the other hand, the number of industrial applications that utilize spherical roller bearings has been increasing constantly. This is due to self-aligning nature and high-load capacity of spherical roller bearings. Typical applications are paper machines, steel rolling, marine equipment, geared transmissions and modern high power wind turbines. This study introduces a three-degree-of-freedom spherical roller bearing model that is computationally efficient, and it is designed to be used in the transient simulations of complete rotor-bearing systems. In the proposed model, the bearing forces are calculated as a function of contact deformation and bearing geometry parameters according to the non-linear Hertzian contact theory. In the numerical results, the important bearing design parameters such as diametral clearance, number of rollers and osculation are studied. Existence of varying compliance (VC) vibrations and the capability of the proposed model in the transient simulations of rotor-bearing systems are demonstrated. The bearing model is verified by using commercial bearing analysis software. Future improvements and model extension possibilities are also discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Journal bearings are widely used for supporting high speed rotating machinery such as turbine, compressor and HDD spindle etc, because of their high load carrying capacity, stability and durability. Recently, the engineering trend is oriented to higher speed and smaller sizes of rotating machinery, and then it is important to enhance stabilities for the journal bearings. Tilting pad journal bearing is generally used for high-speed rotating machineries because of their advantages of stabilization. However, there are some problems using for compact size rotating machineries for their high manufacturing cost and complicated structure. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the stability of more simple bearings compared with tilting pad bearing in order to use for small size rotating machinery. This paper describes the stabilization method of journal bearing based on the combination mechanism with starved lubrication and orientation angle change. From the results of stability experimental study of journal bearings, it is clarified that the stabilization of bearings is improved drastically by using above techniques.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a method for quickly evaluating the effect of changes in bearing location on bearing design for stability of rotating machinery. This method is intended for use by rotating machinery designers to select the “best” bearing locations prior to the bearing design process. The purpose of the method is to improve the design process by separating the problem of determining the “best” bearing locations from that of determining the actual bearing design. The method is independent of the type of bearing employed. For each candidate bearing configuration, the method provides a scalar measure of the relative ability of bearings to meet stability specifications. Within certain limits, the stability specifications are defined by the designer. The scalar measure is used to rank the candidate bearing locations and thereby select the best one. The scalar measure is compared to a practical measure of magnetic bearing design such as the infinity norm of the controller for an example design of a multi-stage centrifugal compressor.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Strategies to control rotor dynamic behavior are critical to achieve improved performance of rotating machinery. It is possible to control the dynamics of a rotating system through the bearing characteristics, i.e., changing their damping and stiffness coefficients. Bearings that can be commanded to change their characteristics over time are known as active bearings. Because active bearings have a complex design, their use in commercial machines is limited. In this scenario, journal bearings are still regularly used since they can provide damping and high load carrying capacity. Moreover, by modifying the fluid film thickness or clearance, one can control the dynamic behavior of the bearing, which is not a simple task when a traditional geometric format is used. However, since the fluid film thickness is proportional to the axial position of the shaft in conical bearings, their dynamic characteristics could be manipulated through compensation of the shaft’s axial position via a thrust magnetic bearing. Therefore, this paper proposes an alternative hybrid bearing design, which consists of a conical fluid-film bearing and a thrust magnetic bearing. The magnetic bearing is used to sustain the axial force created and actuate the system. For the system analyzed, the new concept was able to reduce the maximum lateral vibration of the rotor by 30%.

Abstract (sommario):
Gas turbine engines and other high speed rotating machinery supported by magnetic bearings require some form of backup bearing to ensure reliable and safe operation. To date, this backup capability has been provided by either rolling element bearings or solid lubricated bushings. Both of these solutions have drawbacks — must notably limited life and uncertain dynamic performance. In many cases, the backup bearing system requires substantial maintenance following an activation event. An alternative approach investigated in this work is the use of a compliant foil bearing as a backup bearing. This work discusses tests of this concept on a test rig with a 63 kg rotor. In this application, the foil bearing demonstrated smooth, stable operation during a variety of simulated magnetic bearing failure events, and allowed for continued operation of the rotor following the simulated failures.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Although they are crucial parts of heavy machinery, bearings are also prone to failure; between 50 and 60 percent of rotating machinery failures are caused by bearings. Data is gathered for the diagnosis and prognosis of bearing faults to help remedy this. Diagnosis relates to identifying a fault situation using recognized symptoms, whereas prognosis focuses on forecasting how the fault will turn out. To determine the states of machines, machine learning techniques are utilized. Deep learning is a branch of machine learning that focuses on training neural networks with several layers. Traditional (shallow) learning, which uses pre-defined features in data to identify machine conditions, and deep learning, which employs complex data types, are two methods of machine learning. In recent years, data fusion and transfer learning have become interesting and important subfields of deep learning. Transfer learning uses previously trained models as a starting point for new tasks by applying learned knowledge from the previous task on the related new task, whereas data fusion mixes many data types to improve comprehension. In this study, the need for large quantities of data fusion and transfer learning data is used to design a test rig for roller bearing fault identification and prognosis. Historically, academic researchers have concentrated on using the data they have gathered with their test rigs to undertake data analysis, rather than concentrating on the design of the test rig itself. Yet, there is a need for a test rig design that appropriately gathers clean multi-sensor data from a variety of bearing sizes to enhance deep machine learning algorithm research for bearing health diagnosis and prognosis via transfer learning. By offering useful methods that can be utilized to perform machine health diagnosis and prognosis on bearings, this work aims to close the gap between the needs of industry and the research community. This can aid in the early detection of faults, offer time frames for repair or replacement, and prevent catastrophic failures.

Abstract (sommario):
More often then not, the rolling element bearings of rotating machinery are the mechanical components that are first prone to premature failure. Early warning of an impending bearing failure is vital to the safety and reliability of high-speed turbo-machinery. Presently, vibration monitoring is one of the most applied procedures in on-line damage and failure monitoring of rolling element bearings. This paper presents results from an experimental rotor-bearing test rig where quantified damage was induced in the supporting tapered ball bearings. Subsequently the vibration signature due to damage at the inner race of the bearing is examined. Four on-line vibration signature analyzing schemes are used concomitantly: (i) time averaging, (ii) frequency domain analysis, (iii) joint time-frequency analysis (Wigner-Ville and wavelet transforms) and (iv) chaotic vibration analysis (modified Poincare diagrams). The size/level of the damage is corroborated with the vibration amplitude and the resulting relationships are linearized to provide quantification criteria for bearing progressive failure prediction. The results from the above mentioned methodologies are compared for accuracy and redundancy, thus increasing the reliability for early detection of bearing damage and failure. It is shown that the use of the modified Poincare map can provide an effective way for identification and quantification of bearing damage in rolling element bearings.

Abstract (sommario):
The value added tax (VAT) is supposed to be a tax on consumption that achieves greater economic efficiency than alternative indirect taxes. It is also meant to facilitate enforcement through the ‘self-enforcing mechanism’ – based on opposed incentives for buyers and sellers, and because of the paper trail it creates. Being a rather sophisticated tax, however, the VAT is complex to administer and costly to comply with, especially in lower-income countries. This paper takes a closer look at how the VAT system functions in practice in Rwanda. Using a mixed-methods approach, which combines qualitative information from focus group discussions with the analysis of administrative and survey data, we document and explain a number of surprising inconsistencies in the filing behaviour of VAT-remitting firms, which lead to suboptimal usage of electronic billing machines, as well as failure to claim legitimate VAT credits. The consequence of these inconsistencies is twofold. It makes it difficult for the Rwanda Revenue Authority to exploit its VAT data to the fullest, and leads to firms, particularly smaller ones, bearing a higher VAT burden than larger ones. There are several explanations for these inconsistencies. They appear to lie in a combination of taxpayer confusion, fear of audit, and constraints in administrative capacity.
