Abstract (sommario):
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), the prominent Irish poet and dramatist was one of the foremost figures of twentieth-century literature. He was a driving force behind the Irish Revival, and together with lady Gregory and Edward Martyn established the Abby Theatre, and served as its chief playwright during its early years. He was awarded the Noble Prize in literature for his always inspired poetry which in a highly artistic form gave expression to the spirit of a whole nation. The paper aims at analyzing the poet's quest for social freedom and poet's right in the state. The King's Threshold was first performed by the Irish National Theatre Society at the Molesworth Hall, in Dublin on 7 October, 1903. It is founded upon a Midieval-Irish story of the demands of the poets at the court of King Guaire at Gort, Co. Galway; it was also influenced by Edwin Ellis's play Sancan the bard (1905) which was published ten years earlier, by Edwin Ellis.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper is dedicated to the role of princess Marcelina Czartoryska, a friend and student of Chopin, as an initiator of the research into his life and work, and to Stanisław Tarnowski’s essay about the composer. On 19 March 1871, in the hall of the Saski Hotel, a public lecture on Chopin was presented by Tarnowski, accompanied by Czartoryska’s magnificent performance. The income from this event was donated to Towarzystwo Wzajemnej Pomocy (mutual help association) for the support of the poor students of the Jagiellonian University. Czartoryska accompanied Tarnowski, illustrating his speech by playing the piano. Tarnowski published his work twice: in 1871 and 1892. He set the life and work of Chopin in the context of the period. Based on the sources, he reconstructed the spiritual biography of the artist, his creative personality both in terms of the psychological and the social aspects. He saw in Chopin “the fourth greatest poet of the divided Poland,” the fourth Bard.

Abstract (sommario):
Stigmatized as kitsch, the music of Rachmaninov has largely been neglected by scholars. A reassessment has been made possible by recent historiography on late imperial Russia documenting the intelligentsia’s search for a messianic musician-bard, a role that several of Rachmaninov’s pre-revolutionary works take up, but not in the terms expected of them. Heard in relation to the Orpheus myth often invoked at the time, to the contemporaneous prevalence of psychoanalysis, and to the formal affinities between early modernist orchestral music and the unconscious, the music both assumes unforeseen significance and offers the possibility of a counterstatement to current musicological concerns with embodiment and presence. Amid these debates, Rachmaninov’s symphonic poem, Isle of the Dead (1909), emerges as an unexpectedly subversive work that sounds the futility of fin-de-siècle Russian utopianism while giving voice to an alternative, anti-metaphysical ethics. Meanwhile, the music points to a clandestine violence governing much of musicology’s ongoing fascination with the “drastic.” The resulting critique leads to the proposal of a reparative musicology capable of giving a sympathetic account of the cultural work of public mourning that Rachmaninov’s music performs in the concert hall today.

Shen, Shun-Qing. "Half quantized Hall effect". Coshare Science 2 (29 febbraio 2024): 1–42. http://dx.doi.org/10.61109/cs.202402.128.

Abstract (sommario):
Here we report a half-quantized Hall effect in a metal or semimetal. The Hall conductance is half quantized and the longitudinal conductance is nonzero. Consequently, the Hall resistivity is not quantized. The half quantization occurs when the parity symmetry or time reversal symmetry emerges near the Fermi surface or Fermi level while the symmetry is broken in the whole system. A recent experiment reports the observation of the half-quantized Hall conductance in a magnetically-doped topological insulator. We discover that a single gapless Dirac cone exists in the band structure and has half-quantized conductance when the Fermi level intercepts the gapless surface states in which the parity symmetry is invariant. As there are no localized chiral edge states in the gapless and metallic system, we find that the chiral edge current is carried by the gapless surface states. The current density peaks at the edge and decays in a power law rather than the exponential decay as in the conventional quantum anomalous Hall effect. The half quantized Hall conductance is a signature of parity anomaly in a single gapless Dirac cone on a lattice. We term the nontrivial quantum phase as “parity anomalous semimetal”. The work opens the door to exploring novel topological states of matter with fractional topological invariants.

Abstract (sommario):
The Lehesaju Muusika International Music and Poetry Festival in Tartu as a Specific Form of Cultural Mediation and Object of Analysis for Research on Multilingualism. The paper focuses on the multilingual discourse of the Lehesaju Muusika international music and poetry festival, which takes place annually in Tartu, Estonia. Being an international cultural event organised by ethnic minorities, Lehesaju Muusika represents a unique source of empirical data for research on multilingualism. The festival attracts songwriters and performers of the so-called ‘author song’ or ‘bard song’ not only from Estonia, but also from all over the world. The key feature of this genre is the dominance of the text over the music. The spatial organisation of a concert hall represents a specific power constellation within a microsocial structure. Performing artists have the power to decide in which language they perform and address the multilingual audience, while the audience itself has an indirect effect on this decision. The artist’s dialogue with the audience represents a peculiar discursive entity within the discourse of the festival. Code-switching appears to be one of the inherent characteristics of this discursive entity. The present paper summarises some key features of international music and poetry festivals as multilingual cultural events, focusing on the discourse of the Lehesaju Muusika festival. It offers a brief analysis of the audience’s language profile based on the results of a microsociological case study carried out during the latest festival, in 2019. To illustrate the complexity of the multilingual communication during the festival, three situations of code-switching during the performance of an Estonian native speaker in front of the multilingual audience are described and analysed.

Abstract (sommario):
The Hall effect of (100)- and (110)-oriented films of the half-metallic ferromagnetic oxide CrO2, fabricated by both chemical vapor deposition and high pressure, thermal decomposition methods, has been examined in large magnetic fields up to 60 T. In all cases the Hall effect exhibits a sign reversal from positive to negative with increasing field, which we take as evidence for multi-band behavior. (110) films fabricated by both methods exhibit this sign reversal at relatively low fields. The data may be fit with a simple two-band model, which indicates the existence of highly mobile holes of p-like parentage, along with a much larger number of heavy, d-like electrons. In the (100) film the sign reversal is at much higher field. The parameters obtained from the fits allow us (with help from band structure calculations) to infer the band structure near the Fermi level and how it depends on sample strain and other structural characteristics. These details will be important for understanding carrier transport through interfaces such as for spin injection or other "spintronics" applications.

Abstract (sommario):
We investigate the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). We derive the quantized Hall resistance of IQHE in the presence of the high magnetic field using the scheme of standing waves by de Broglie matter wave of electron gas confined within a two-dimensional square-type quantum well. Without any modification of electrons and holes, it is shown that FQHE is only a decoupling mode of the Hall resistance by two-band-type of electrons and holes, which are governed by IQHE respectively.

Abstract (sommario):
In contrast to earlier years, the Town Hall currently serves as a multifunctional space encompassing a park, a recreational facility, and a venue for fulfilling one’s daily physical training requirements. Batu Bara Berjaya (BBB) and its staff, including contractors and subcontractors, are currently seeking an increase in visitor numbers. This thesis aimed to identify authentic challenges, ascertain the optimal business line for Town Hall, and explore strategies for Town Hall to effectively compete with other prominent attractions in East Kutai, thereby reclaiming its position as the preferred destination. The research methodology integrates both qualitative and quantitative descriptive approaches. The data collection process involved the administration of questionnaires, conducting interviews, making field observations, and reviewing relevant literature. In qualitative analysis, data is subjected to various analytical techniques such as Stakeholder Analysis, Kepner-Tregoe Analysis (K-T Analysis), 5 Whys Analysis, Porter’s Five Forces Analysis, and Value Co-Creation Analysis. On the other hand, quantitative analysis involves using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) Analysis to process data. The study’s findings demonstrated that applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) suggests that the Town Hall ought to prioritise developing the Sports Centre. Subsequently, the Culinary Area and Hangout Places should be considered as secondary options. According to Porter’s Five Forces framework, the Town Hall can be classified as operating moderately. Alternatively, it could be subject to competition in its role as a tourist destination, notwithstanding the challenges associated with accessing it. Furthermore, the researchers propose utilising the Value Co-Creation Analysis framework to convert town halls into viable and enduring tourist destinations. The results of the study indicate that based on AHP calculations, the Town Hall should prioritize the Sports Center as the primary development option, followed by the Culinary Area and Hangout Places. Then, based on Porter's Five Forces, the Town Hall is at the Moderate level, or it can be contested again to compete as a place to visit, despite the difficulty of the path. And ultimately, the authors of this study suggest employing the Value Co-Creation Analysis framing to transform town halls into sustainable visitor destinations.

The integer quantum Hall effect is studied for a non-interacting electron in a monolayer graphene. We numerically calculate the Hall conductivity in a single Landau level with disorder, and estimate the critical energies for the extended states in thermodynamic limit. We show that a valley-degenerated (K and K′) Landau band has extended levels at two different energies, indicating that an extra Hall plateau appears inside.

Abstract (sommario):
We present comparative theoretical investigation of thermoelectric power and Hall effect in the Hubbard model for correlated metal and Mott insulator (considered as prototype cuprate superconductor) for different concentrations of current carriers. Analysis is performed within standard DMFT approximation. For Mott insulator we consider the typical case of partial filling of the lower Hubbard band (hole doping). We calculate the dependence of thermopower on doping level and determine the critical concentration of carriers corresponding to sign change of thermopower. An anomalous dependence of thermopower on temperature is obtained significantly different from linear temperature dependence typical for the usual metals. The role of disorder scattering is analyzed on qualitative level. The comparison with similar studies of the Hall effect shows, that breaking of electron-hole symmetry leads to the appearance of the relatively large interval of band-fillings (close to the half-filling) where thermopower and Hall effects have different signs. We propose a certain scheme allowing to determine the number of carriers from ARPES data and perform semi-quantitative estimate of both thermopower and Hall coefficient using the usual DFT calculations of electronic spectrum.

Abstract (sommario):
Aluminum implanted 4H-SiC often shows an unexpected increase of the free hole density at elevated temperatures in Hall Effect measurements. Here we show that this phenomenon cannot solely be traced down to the Hall scattering factor and the presence of excited acceptor states. It is necessary to assume an additional defect center in the lower half of the band gap with ionization energies higher than that of aluminum to explain this behavior. Therefore, we investigated ion-implanted square van-der-Pauw samples with Hall Effect and complementary SIMS measurements. An analysis of the data using the neutrality equation reveals compensation ratios of 20 % to 90 %, depending on the aluminum concentration and the concentration of the deep defect center of up to 50 % of the doping.

Abstract (sommario):
Halo nevi (leukoderma acquisitum centrifugum, Sutton's nevus, leukopigmentary nevus, perinevoid vitiligo or perinevoid leukoderma) are melanocytic nevi surrounded by a halo of hypopigmentation or depigmentation. They are significantly more common in children and young people, with a peak incidence at the age of 15, without gender or racial predilection. The usual clinical course of a halo nevus involves gradual involution and subsequent complete regression of a centrally placed nevus that leaves behind an area of depigmentation. Typical halo nevi do not require treatment. Exceptionally, halo nevi develop from dysplastic nevi and malignant neoplasms of the skin (halo phenomenon). The paper presents a 12-year-old boy with changes in nevi on his back. During the last summer, a pale band developed around two nevi. The nevi became lighter and shrank. One of them has completely disappeared. Apart from basal cell carcinoma in the father, the presence of other atypical nevi, melanoma, vitiligo and autoimmune diseases in the personal and family anamnesis was not established. A typical halo nevus is diagnosed by clinical and dermatological examination and regular dermatological monitoring is advised. Halo nevi mostly develop from an acquired melanocytic nevus, but can be seen in dysplastic nevi, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. A thorough medical history, careful clinical and dermatological examination make it possible to identify atypical halo nevi that require a biopsy.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, starting from a lattice model of topological insulators, we study the quantum phase transitions among different quantum states, including quantum spin Hall state, quantum anomalous Hall state and normal band insulator state by calculating their topological properties (edge states, quantized spin Hall conductivities, and the number of zero mode on a π-flux). We find that at the topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs), the topological "order parameter" — spin Chern number will jump. And since the masses of the nodal fermions will change sign, the third derivative of ground-state energy is nonanalytic. In addition, we discuss the finite temperature properties and the stability of the TQPTs.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of mobile phone as a cheating tool in the examination hall among students have considerably increased a burden to invigilators to ensure integrity in examination hall. Many active mobile phone detection schemes had been proposed as the solution to this problem. However, the detection system function in a small detection range of 1.5 to 2 meters from the detection circuit and does not distinguish various frequency bands of radio frequency signals. In order to have diverse range of RF mobile phone signals detection for alerting the invigilators of their specified monitoring region, antenna is proposed to be used. This is done by antenna design simulation using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software. Two types of antenna; single-dipole antenna and multi-band dipole antenna are simulated to know the characteristics of VSWR, gain and total efficiency. From the simulation results, multi-band dipole antenna shows acceptable VSWR value which are approximate to 2 V, gain is equal to 2.85 dB and total efficiency is equal to 2.484 dB for 2.4 GHz signal. The results imply positive event that multi-band antenna can be a preferable tool in elaborating accurate RF signal detection of active mobile phone in examination hall.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE), a new member of the family of Hall effects, in monolayer phosphorene is investigated. We find that phosphorene exhibits pronounced NLHE, arising from the dipole moment of the Berry curvature induced by the proximity effect that breaks the inversion symmetry of the system. Remarkably, the nonlinear Hall response exhibits central minimum with a width on the order of the band gap, followed by two resonance-like peaks. Interestingly, each resonance peak of the Hall response shifts in the negative region of the chemical potential which is consistent with the shift of valence and conduction bands in the energy spectrum of monolayer phosphorene. It is observed that the two peaks are asymmetric, originated from anisotropy in the band structure of phosphorene. It is shown that the NLHE is very sensitive to the band gap and temperature of the system. Moreover, we find that a phase transition occurs in the nonlinear Hall response and nonlinear spin Hall conductivity of the system under the influence of spin–orbit interaction, tuned by the strength of interaction and band gap induced in the energy spectrum of monolayer phosphorene with broken inversion symmetry.

Abstract (sommario):
The recent quantum Hall experiments in graphene have confirmed the theoretically well-understood picture of the quantum Hall (QH) conductance in fermion systems with continuum Dirac spectrum. In this paper we take into account the lattice and perform an exact diagonalization of the Landau problem on the hexagonal lattice. At very large magnetic fields the Dirac argument fails completely and the Hall conductance, given by the number of edge states present in the gaps of the spectrum, is dominated by lattice effects. As the field is lowered, the experimentally observed situation is recovered through a phenomenon which we call band collapse. As a corollary, for low magnetic fields, graphene will exhibit two qualitatively different QHE's: at low filling, the QHE will be dominated by the "relativistic" Dirac spectrum and the Hall conductance will be odd-integer; above a certain filling, the QHE will be dominated by a non-relativistic spectrum, and the Hall conductance will span all integers, even and odd.

Abstract (sommario):
Using model analysis and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that intrinsic ferromagnetic field of materials can effectively modulate the non-Dirac band dispersions. The four-bands k· p model illustrates that rotating magnetization from in-plane to out-of-plane lifts the degeneracy of band dispersions at Γ point, and spin components of lower or upper two bands tend to become identical as the enhancement of exchange field, which results in non-trivial topology. Moreover, we exemplify these phenomena in stanene-based systems, namely stanene/hematene heterostructure and half-hydrogen-passivated stanene, respectively. Some interesting spin-dependent transport behavior, such as large magnetoresistance and quantum anomalous hall effect, are achieved. These findings enrich the physics of non-Dirac electrons and provide promising routes for realizing effective manipulation of band dispersions via spin freedom.

Abstract (sommario):
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with nontrivial topological states have recently drawn considerable attention. Among them, 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are standing out due to their advantages such as the easy synthesis in practice and less sensitivity to oxidation that are distinctly different from inorganic materials. By means of density-functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the electronic and topological properties of a class of 2D MOFs X(C21H15N3) (X = transition metal element from 3 d to 5 d). Excitingly, we find that X(C21H15N3) (X = Ti, Zr, Ag, Au) are Chern insulators with sizable band gaps (∼7.1 meV). By studying a four-band effective model, it is revealed that the Chern insulator phase in X(C21H15N3) (X = Ti, Zr, Ag, Au) is caused cooperatively by the band inversion of the p orbitals of the C21H15N3 molecule and the intrinsic ferromagnetism of X(C21H15N3). Additionally, Mn(C21H15N3) is a Dirac half-metal ferromagnet with a high Curie temperature up to 156 K. Our work demonstrates that 2D MOFs X(C21H15N3) are good platforms for realizing the quantum anomalous Hall effect and designing spintronic devices based on half-metals with high-speed and long-distance spin transport.

Abstract (sommario):
We study Hall and Nernst transports in monolayer MoS2based on Green’s function formalism. We have derived analytical results for spin and valley Hall conductivities in the zero temperature and spin and valley Nernst conductivities in the low temperature. We found that tuning of the band gap and spin-orbit splitting can drive system transition from spin Hall insulator (SHI) to valley Hall insulator (VHI). When the system is subjected to a temperature gradient, the spin and valley Nernst conductivities are dependent on Berry curvature.

Abstract (sommario):
Based on first-principles calculations, we predict that the monolayer AuTe2Cl is a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator with a topological band gap about 10 meV. The three-dimensional (3D) AuTe2Cl is a topological semimetal that can be viewed as the monolayer stacking along [Formula: see text] axis. By studying the energy-level distribution of [Formula: see text] orbitals of Te atoms for the bulk and the monolayer, we find that the confinement effect driven [Formula: see text] band inversion is responsible for the topological nontrivial nature of monolayer. Since 3D bulk AuTe2Cl has already been experimentally synthesized, we expect that monolayer AuTe2Cl can be exfoliated from a bulk sample and the predicted QSH effect can be observed.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent experiments on the tunneling conductance between parallel 2D electron gases at total Landau level filing ν tot = 1 are described. When the two layers are close enough together the ground state of the system may be viewed as a Bose condensate of excitons consisting of electrons in one layer paired with (conduction band) holes in the other. The measured tunneling conductance exhibits a spectacular resonance around zero bias which resembles the dc Josephson effect. This resonance is a signature of long wavelength Goldstone collective modes in the phase coherent ground state. Experiments performed with an added in-plane magnetic field have demonstrated the expected linear dispersion of this mode.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractDesigning photonic topological insulators (PTIs) is highly non-trivial because it requires inversion of band symmetries around the band gap, which was so far done using intuition combined with meticulous trial and error. Here we take a completely different approach: we consider the design of PTIs as an inverse design problem and use topology optimization to maximize the transmission through an edge mode past a sharp bend. Two design domains composed of two different but initially identical C6ν-symmetric unit cells define the geometrical design problem. Remarkably, the optimization results in a PTI reminiscent of the shrink-and-grow approach to quantum-spin-Hall PTIs but with notable differences in the crystal structure as well as qualitatively different band structures and with significantly improved performance as gauged by the band-gap sizes, which are at least 50% larger than in previous designs. Furthermore, we find a directional β-factor exceeding 99% and very low losses for sharp bends. Our approach allows the introduction of fabrication limitations by design and opens an avenue towards designing PTIs with hitherto-unexplored symmetry constraints.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a locally resonant metamaterial periodically rearranged as a local resonator, that is hexagonal holes arranged in a thin plate replace the elastic local resonator to achieve the quantum valley Hall effect. Due to the C3v symmetry in the primitive hexagonal lattice, one Dirac point emerges at high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone in the sub-wavelength area. Rotating the beam element of the resonator can break the spatial inversion symmetry to lift the Dirac degeneracy and form a new bandgap. Thus, the band inversion is discovered by computing the relationship between the associated bandgap and the rotational parameter. We also confirmed this result by analyzing the vortex chirality and calculating the Chern number. We can discover two kinds of edge states in the projected band obtained by computing the supercell composed of different topological microstructures. Finally, the propagation behavior in various heterostructures at low frequencies was analyzed. It is shown that these valley Hall elastic insulators can guide elastic waves along sharp interfaces and are immune to backscattering from defects or disorder. By utilizing elastic resonators, a simple reconfigurable topological elastic metamaterial is realized in the sub-wavelength area.
