Abstract (sommario):
Businesses make investments in e-business and the technology that supports it. Applications for e-business, like supply chain management and customer relationship management, boost innovative product and service offers, strong customer relationships, and transaction efficiency and scope economies. Companies find it challenging to turn these advantages into revenues or economic value, though. Many enterprises that have started online have failed to generate profits. According to a 2001 AMR Research Inc. survey, businesses would continue to spend more on e- business even in a recession. At best, though, these investments have yielded a mediocre return. Conventional Banking To conduct standard banking functions including cash withdrawals, fund transfers, and account inquiries, clients must physically visit the bank's branch. However, clients using e-banking can complete these transactions 24/7 from the comfort of their homes or workplaces using desktops or laptops and electronic media. We call this banking—anytime, anyplace. Consumers don't need to wait in line, deal with tellers, deal with constrained banking hours—all they need to do is visit the bank's website to examine their account details and do transactions as needed. The Banking System in India Scheduled and non-scheduled banks were distinguished under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The Second Schedule of the RBI Act, 1934 lists scheduled banks, which include state co-ops, regional rural banks, and commercial banks (both foreign and Indian). The banks not listed in this schedule are considered non-scheduled. Three types of banks comprise India's organized banking system: co-ops, regional rural banks, and commercial banks. The Reserve Bank of India, the nation's highest monetary and financial body, is in charge of managing the banking sector. Banks for commerce, which have been in place for many years encourage urban savings and make them available to trading and industrial organizations for working capital needs. Commercial banks were divided into public sector banks, sometimes known as nationalized banks, and private sector banks after 1969.

Abstract (sommario):
Banking is one of the essential elements of economic sustainability. Indonesia has two banking systems: banking with conventional principles and banking with sharia principles. Differences in the regulation of the system can affect the results of the bank's performance. So, it is necessary to analyze the comparison of bank performance to determine the significance of the differences. This research aims to present the findings of a financial performance analysis carried out on Islamic and conventional banks' financial statements in 2016-2020. This study analyzes by looking at financial performance ratios consisting of Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Operating Costs, and Operating Income (BOPO), and Financing Deposit Ratio (FDR). ) using SPSS. 36. The results obtained are significant differences between CAR, ROA, ROE, BOPO, and FDR of conventional and Islamic banks. Islamic banks' CAR, ROE, BOPO, and FDR values are better than conventional banks, while conventional banks' ROA is better than Islamic banks. Abstract (sommario):
Researching bank efficiency factors is very challenging. Bearing that in mind, this paper analyzes the financial performance and efficiency of banks in Serbia based on the fuzzy LMAWMARCOS method. The obtained empirical results show that the top five banks are, in order: Banca Intesa, OTP Banka Srbija, Komercijalna banka, Mobi Banka and NLB banka. Badly positioned banks include, in order: MIRABANK, API banka, Srpska banka, 3 BANKA and Addiko Bank. Among other things, the efficiency of banks in Serbia was significantly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to improve the financial performance and efficiency of banks in Serbia in the future, it is necessary to manage resources (human capital, assets and capital), sales of banking products and profits as efficiently as possible. The digitization of the entire banking business also plays a significant role in this.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper describes the current state of Internet banking in India and discusses its implications for the Indian banking industry. Particularly, it seeks to examine the impact of Internet banking on banks’ performance and risk. Using information drawn from the survey of 85 scheduled commercial bank’s websites, during the period of June 2007, the results show that nearly 57 percent of the Indian commercial banks are providing transactional Internet banking services. The univariate analysis indicates that Internet banks are larger banks and have better operating efficiency ratios and profitability as compared to non-Internet banks. Internet banks rely more heavily on core deposits for funding than non-Internet banks do. However, the multiple regression results reveal that the profitability and offering of Internet banking does not have any significant association, on the other hand, Internet banking has a significant and negative association with risk profile of the banks. This research work was undertaken to ascertain the impact of Internet banking in Indian banks and evaluation of its effectiveness in the banking system. To put this study on a unique out look I’ve designed together information while personal questionnaires interaction was paid purely to areas of customers and cashiers of Indian bank and review of related literatures to the main themes and sub themes. It was ascertained that Internet banking has helped the banks to attain goals and objectives. KEYWORDS:internet banking, information technology, electronic transfers

Abstract (sommario):
Digital banking could be a new era for banks in Palestine. Electronic banking services have become an essential part of the banking services in most of the banks in Palestine, along with the traditional banking represented by the physical branches. Recently, more banks in Palestine have shifted towards Electronic Banking services by utilizing the advancement in the Information and Telecommunication technology thereby enhancing the customer experience and satisfaction, and increasing the efficiency of the banking services, since electronic banking is available 24/7, with no restrictions on working hours. This study examines the correlation between electronic banking services in Palestine and customer satisfaction. The main question is: “What is the impact of the electronic banking strategies on customers’ satisfaction within the banking sector in Palestine?” The methodology used to tackle this question is based on two major components: a) survey design targeting 347 banks’ customers in 8 banks in Palestine, b) Direct interviews with the Top management of two major banks in Palestine (Arab Bank and Bank of Palestine) on the bank's future strategies towards Electronic banking. With the introduction of the Third generation of wireless internet (3G) service in Palestine, the internet has become readily available and accessible, at any time. Along with the availability of traditional wireless network in the bank itself, the banking systems in Palestine are moving quickly toward digitalization. This study finds several interesting findings, one of these findings is the significant positive correlation between electronic banking strategies and customer satisfaction using these services. Thus, the study null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. This finding will be guiding the banks in Palestine to build strategies focusing on electronic banking services to achieve one of their top objectives by attracting and retaining their customers for the long-term.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is composed of three empirical chapters each of which examines separate segments of Turkish banking system from different perspectives. First empirical chapter investigates regional loan distribution of development banks. The findings in this chapter suggest that political connection has played a significant role in development lending. There is also geographical bias which leads to higher volumes of loans in the regions close to the capital city. Second empirical chapter examines Islamic banks and compares them with conventional banks in terms of profitability and competition grounds. The results reveal that Islamic banks earn more returns with respect to conventional banks. The results also suggest that the regulatory changes of the last decade improve market power of these banks. The last empirical chapter investigates micro structure of Repo and Reverse Repo Market of Turkey in which only commercial banks can transact. This chapter initially presents the network topologies of this market that helps one to understand the characteristics of complex network in this market. This chapter then computes a connectivity measure and investigates the drivers of connectivity out of domestic and external factors. Although results provide very rich insights, external factors dominate the behaviour of network in this market.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the main determinants of Italian banks' cost efficiency over the period 1993-96, by employing a Fourier-flexible stochastic cost frontier in order to measure X-efficiencies and economies of scale. Quality and riskiness of bank outputs are explicitly accounted for in the cost function and their impact on cost efficiency levels are evaluated. The results show that mean X-inefficiencies range between 13 and 15 per cent of total costs and they tend to decrease over time for all bank sizes. Economies of scale appear present and significant, being especially high for popular and credit co-operative banks. Moreover, the inclusion of risk and output quality factors in the cost function seems to reduce the level and significance of the scale economy estimates. The sample is also subjected to a profitability test that allows for the identification of banks that are both cost and profit efficient. The results suggest that the most efficient and profitable institutions are more able to control all aspects of costs, especially labour costs. Finally, the data were pooled to carry out a logistic regression model in order to examine bank- and market-specific factors that influence Italian banks' inefficiency. According to these results, inefficiencies appear to be inversely correlated with capital strength and positively related to the level of non-performing loans in the balance sheet. The analysis also shows that there is no clear relationship between assets size and bank efficiency. Finally, from the results it is possible to infer that quoted banks seem to be on average more efficient than their non-quoted counterparts.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter develops further the role of a central bank and its interplay with commercial banks. Together, the two ensure the provision of liquidity to the economy, such that the real sectors are shielded from flows of funds originating from household and investors. We also disaggregate the banking system into two banks to represent deposit flows between banks and their impact on the central bank’s balance sheet, and to distinguish between what we call “relative” and “absolute” central bank intermediation. We then integrate deposit money creation by commercial banks into our system of financial accounts, and revisit some old debates, such as the limits of bank money creation and the role of related parameters that the central bank can set (not only the reserve requirement ratio, but also the collateral framework). Finally, we explain the concepts of “plain money” and “full reserve banking” within the financial accounts, and also discuss in this framework the recent proposals regarding central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter introduces the system of accounts of the main sectors of the economy (households; non-financial corporations, the government; banks, and the central bank), describing how these sectors are interrelated through financial claims and liabilities. A financial system, consisting of commercial banks and the central bank, manages flows of funds originating from households, without these flows causing a need for the real sectors to liquidate illiquid real assets. The basic types of assets and liabilities are: real goods, gold, banknotes, deposits, bonds, loans, and equity. We explain how the shortcomings of both IOU and commodity-money based financial systems can be solved via establishing a central bank. A central bank is defined here by its balance sheet and central bank money is the central bank’s basic liability. Both monetary policy implementation and lender of last resort issues relate to liquidity flows within balance sheets. Understanding the logic of basic financial flows is therefore the basis for understanding central banking.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper contributes to the existent literature and the current discussions on regulatory changes towards bank exposure to interest rate risk in the banking book (IRRBB) aiming to provide the model on the computation of earning based gap analysis under unconditional cash flow for the European Bank Authority’s (EBA’s) category 4 banks (i. e. small non-complex domestic financial institutions). The problem, discussed in this paper, arises because the Final Standards issued by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision do not determine the level of sophistication of the IRRBB measurement techniques. There are different explanations of consultants, some surveys, and recommendations, but no suggestions on the particular modeling towards regulation in IRRBB have been found. Another issue addressed here is the uneven capacity of creating risk assessment models of large international and small domestic financial insti-tutions due to the difference in human resources. We first discuss recent changes of regulation on interest rates in the banking book and the background of these changes. We then develop a methodology of the model for assessment of earning-based gap analysis under unconditional cash flows for the 4th category of banks (small, local banks). In addi-tion, the model with one of the Baltic domestic commercial bank’s simulated data is tested.

Abstract (sommario):
Bank soundness is crucially important for the stability of the whole financial system. The goal of the paper is to reveal the contributing factors to bank soundness in the Latvian banking market. Multifactor regression analysis was applied as a core research method. Bank soundness was proxied by Risk index calculated for Latvian banks. Profitability, liquidity and asset quality ratios of individual banks extracted from BankScope data warehouse were used as explanatory variables. Research period covers 2007–2014. The regression model was created, based on financials of Latvian banks as for 2013. The reliability of the model was tested, using the financials from 2014 reports.

Abstract (sommario):
Credit risk as a risk in basic, traditional, and most important banking business – the bank loan, is one of the biggest financial risks, considering that borrowers (debtors) defaults, directly affect the bank’s financial result and capital, and thus its competitiveness in the market. The impact of problematic loans on banking operations will be discussed for 2019-2021 on the example of OTP banking Group operating in 11 countries, to find out if there is a relation between NPL volume and the banking competitiveness. A comparative analysis method has been applied, comparing the profit, the NPL rate and the market position within the banking sector of the country to which each Group member belongs. Results has shown that the reduction in the volume of non-performing loans affected the increase in the competitiveness of banks, as well as that member banks located in European Union countries have a lower percentage of non-performing loans in relation to the member banks of the group operating in countries outside the European Union. The reduction of the percentage of bad loans is certainly in harmonization with the regulations of the European Union, but also in their better implementation.

Abstract (sommario):
Banking activities exhibit highly dynamic and evolving feature in recent years. Healthy financial position of the banks therefore gains importance in assuring well-being of all economic agents in a country. Because of banks’ key role in financial markets and real economy, banking failures or inefficient performances may have profound effects on the whole economy. For this reason, it is important to monitor the bank ratios as a strength indicator. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate financial position of the banks in Turkey. To this end, we select particular 29 ratios of the present day banks which are matching the ratios of previously failed banks between the period 1997-2003. Therefore, we construct a data set by which the banks can be categorized into two groups, namely failed and non-failed banks. Data covering the period 1996-2014 extracted from Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency. In the first place, we perform ANOVA test to evaluate the most relevant ratios for bank failure. The ANOVA test results reveal that 13 of 29 ratios are not significant. The remaining ratios are used to implement factor analysis in order to categorize ratios and calculate factor scores. Lastly, we estimate a Probit regression model to determine conditional probability of failure for a given bank. Our results show that financial position of the banks exhibits substantial variations in Turkey. Furthermore, given the data set and methods employed, most of the banks have a robust financial position and are unlikely to fail.

Abstract (sommario):
Ethics or rather its lack in finances it is a very popular topic nowadays. Banks have an important role in the economy and must have a certain behaviour towards the society, therefore must follow the moral norms. Each banker has his set of values, which form the basis for judging what is "right". All the commercial banks have their own set of rules inspired by organizational culture and management, rules that follow the Banking Code of Ethics. During their activity, banks will seek to ensure a balance between the interests of customers, shareholders, investors and stakeholders. The paper discloses the main trends and issues of banking ethics and the customers` experiences with the Romanian banks. Financial inclusion and ethical sustainability regarding the banking system is an important subject for researchers and bankers. Moreover, the lack of clear ethical norms regarding the manner of communicating the interests and commissions from the contract are affecting the customer relationship with the bank. The study aims to increase the attention paid to customer interests in relation with the banks and also the public confidence in the financial banking field, by standardizing the norms of integration and applied ethics of the country. An immoral behaviour destroys the trust, and without trust, businesses cannot grow. The purpose of the paper is to illustrate and correct the main dysfunctions in the banking sector regarding the ethical behaviour, how banks can adapt to the requirements of the society, how the Banking Code of Ethics can be improved. Confidence in the banking environment expresses the presumption of continued economic activity.

Abstract (sommario):
Small and medium firms are highly dependent on banks to finance their business activities. Thus, banking relationship may be crucial to overcome financial difficulties and to ensure their continuity. Accordingly, this paper investigates the influence of banking relationship on SMEs failure. In particular, four measures that firms can control to build their banking relationships and, that resemble standard variables from the literature on bank/firms relationships are evaluated: the breadth of relationships (number of banks), the relationship length(relationship duration), the relationship proximity (bank-firm distance) and, the relationship form (type of bank). Applying a logistic regression to a unique sample of 4960 French SME firms over the period 2013-2016, we evidence that banking relationships have a significant role on the SMEs likelihood of failure. More precisely, we find that multibank relationships, working with a small bank and relationship length are significantly negative correlated with SMEs failure. The opposite effect appears in bank-firm distance, which increases the SMEs probability of failure. Additionally, a corporate failure prediction model was built based on both financial ratios and banking relationship variables. The performance of this model was compared to a model based solely on financial ratios as predictive indicators. The results indicate that banking relationship variables possess prediction power to failure and enhance the performance of corporate failure models. Consequently, our findings are important from a policy perspective to further comprehend the role that banks play on SMEs failure.

Abstract (sommario):
The banking system is a coherent set of banking institutions, operating in a country, responding to the needs of a stage of socio-economic development. It is a booming field and involves in its development the entire economy. In this paper, I analyzed the performance and competitiveness of the banking system in the Republic of Moldova through the analysis of the number and volume of loans granted and deposits attracted. I also studied the profit and loss situation of the banks during the two years of the pandemic. Moreover, I evaluated the satisfaction of consumers of banking services, and I established the top 4 banks based on their performance. Consequently, due to the fact that banks compete with one another, they have to offer great services for their clients - otherwise individuals will change to another, better, bank. This makes banks more effective and productive, which is good for the economy.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the banking infrastructure that served agricultural exports in the second half of the 19th century on the example of the Oryol Commercial Bank and the Oryol province. The author briefly presents the results of a completed scientific project, during the implementation of which it was proved that the Orel Commercial Bank, based on one of the largest export roads, back in the 1870s (20 years earlier than the State Bank’s branches) made a bet on all types of banking services for agriculture. The servicing of commodity-money flows in the western direction absolutely dominated the region, with the harvest of last year being exported, and rail transportation was closely correlated with banking operations. Thus, a crop storage system has developed in the region, supplemented by a complex of banking operations. This fact must be taken into account when assessing the role of banks in regional development.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the paper is to estimate the cost efficiency of the Czech and Slovak commercial banks within the period 2010-2014. For empirical analysis the Data Envelopment Analysis input-oriented model with variable returns to scale is applied on the data of the commercial banks. The intermediation approach is adopted to define the inputs and outputs. The Czech commercial banks are more cost efficient than Slovak commercial banks. The development of average cost efficiency is similar in the Czech and Slovak banking industry. The most efficient Czech banks are Ceská sporitelna and Sberbank in the Czech banking sector, the most efficient Slovak bank is Privatbanka with 100% efficiency.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper explores whether the level of financial integration of banks in a country increases the incidence of systemic banking crises. The paper uses a de facto proxy for financial integration based on network statistics of banks participating in the global market of interbank syndicated loans. Specifically, the network statistics degree and betweenness are used to proxy for the de facto integration of the average bank in a country. The paper fits a count data model in the cross-section for the period 1980- 2007 and finds that the level of integration of the average bank is a robust determinant of the incidence of banking crises. An increased level of de facto integration as mea- sured by borrowing by banks is positively associated with the incidence of crises. A higher level of de jure integration (capital account openness) is also associated with a higher incidence of crises. However, the results also indicate that prudential banking regulation (supervision) plays a crucial and much larger role in reducing the incidence of crises. Interestingly, the results also show that the level of integration as measured by betweenness of the average bank has a negative effect on the incidence of crises. That is, the more important the average bank of a country is to the global bank network, the fewer the number of crises the country endures.

Abstract (sommario):
We examine the effects of all three major European Central Bank (ECB) unconventional monetary policies since 2011 for euro area banks’ holdings of loans, government securities and cash deposited in central banks. The three ECB policies are longer-term refinancing operations (LTROs), the asset purchase programmes and the ECB’s interest rate on its deposit facility. We also compare the responses of non-crisis and crisis countries to these policies. Our evidence indicates that the ECB’s unconventional monetary policy measures increased bank lending across the euro area countries. The second round of LTROs, also known as targeted LTROs (TLTROs), were conditional on banks increasing their lending. This change had a substantially larger effect on total lending by banks. The computed effects of the LTROs and TLTROs, based on average size, indicate that in non-crisis countries LTROs increased bank loans by 7.6% of assets and TLTROs increased bank loans by 16.4% of assets, whereas in crisis countries the increases were 8.4% and 14.6% for LTROs and TLTROs, respectively. We find that both LTROs and TLTROs were associated with decreases in government securities held by banks in non-crisis countries, while the LTROs were associated with increases in government securities held by banks in crisis countries.

Abstract (sommario):
It is almost 10 years since one of Portugal’s five largest banks, BES, was subject to a bank resolution measure. In 2015, another large bank, BANIF, followed the same path. Now that some time has passed and the full consequences of the resolutions materialised, it is time to reflect on the causes of the crises at these two banks and to draw lessons for the future. In addition to looking into the relevant literature, official company reports, parliamentary inquiries, newspapers and other public information, we examine whether key financial ratios could have raised a red flag. We conclude that the collapses were explained by a mixture of macrostructural causes and above all bank-specific factors. The two cases are good illustrations of the negative effects of financialisation in the Portuguese economy. The key profitability and risk indicators provided some timely indications of the problems facing the two banks.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses the ways in which macroeconomic developments can put stress on banks, and in extreme cases lead to banking crises. These macroeconomic causes of bank vulnerability and crisis have important implications for regulatory regimes, and for macroeconomic policy itself. Much of the discussion emphasizes the need for monetary policy to be set with an eye on the state of the domestic banking system as an occasionally important consideration. One purpose of this paper is to promote a discussion of how to do a better job of incorporating weak banking systems into macroeconomic policy management.

Abstract (sommario):
We document the existence of a quantitative relevant banks' balance-sheet transmission channel of oil price shocks by estimating a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model with banking and oil sectors. The associated amplification mechanism implies that those shocks explain a non-negligible share of US GDP growth fluctuations, up to 17 percent, instead of 6 percent absent the banking sector. Also, they mitigated the severity of the Great Recession’s trough. GDP growth would have been 2.48 percentage points more negative in 2008Q4 without the beneficial effect of low oil prices. The estimate without the banking sector is only 1.30 percentage points.

Abstract (sommario):
Private firms establish relationships with banks in local markets to obtain adequate financing for their operations through credit and loans. As major banks reduced their branch networks in recent years, many firms have lost access to their local bank. We evaluate the impact of a large number of branch closures on firm operations, wages and employment, and economic output in Brazil from 2011 to 2021. We adopt a difference-in-differences strategy with staggered treatment timing, employing both two-way fixed effects and Callaway-Sant'Anna estimators. Our study finds that bank branch closures result in a reduction in establishments with active operations from 1.2% initially to 8.1% within 4-7 years, a 0.5 decline in weekly hours of formal employment, and a compression in the real wage distribution. Micro firms, trade and service firms, and agricultural firms are found to be the most vulnerable. Our study highlights the importance of physical bank branches that provide financial access and meet the localized financial demand of several types of firms.

Abstract (sommario):
Institutional and legal differences between countries increase entry costs and reduce the ability of banks to expand abroad. We use bilateral foreign banking data for 176 countries to estimate a gravity model in which bilateral cross-border banking activity is explained, in addition to standard variables, by legal and institutional differences. We find that foreign banking is negatively affected by absolute differences in the legal setup and in basic institutions between source and host countries. Differences in the legal origin, for example, reduce bilateral participation in the banking system by nearly 11 percent. Additionally we do not find strong evidence suggesting asymmetries in adapting to better or worse institutional/legal environments.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, Latin American banking sectors have experienced an accelerated process of concentration and foreign penetration that has prompted diverse views regarding its implications for the competitive behavior of banks and for the financial stability of the system as a whole. Exploiting a rich bank-level balance sheet database for eight Latin American countries, we examine the evolution of concentration and foreign penetration indicators and their impact on competition and risk. We find that, while concentration did not reduce competition in the industry, foreign penetration appears to have led to less competitive banking sectors. Moreover, we find banking sector fragility to be positively related to competition and, through this channel, negatively related to foreign participation, despite the fact that foreign banks in the region are associated with higher insolvency risk due to higher leverage ratios and more volatile returns.
