Gunes, Tulay. "Portable houses and context : the case of Israeli settlements in the West Bank". Virtual Press, 2006. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1348349.

Abstract (sommario):
Architectural discourses related to portable buildings are largely positivistic and focused on structure, materials, and modern technology. Scholars profile small, prefabricated constructions as relocatable, adaptable, and reusable according to the user's contradictions. While romanticizing a unique lifestyle, portable house prototypes open the way for industrial mass production and low-cost housing. Intentionally designed as place-independent units, they can, and often do, remain in one place for a long time. This scenario impacts significantly the social and spatial contexts of a particular locality, as it confronts the territorial claims of special interest groups. What is the role of portable buildings in such a setting? Who are the decision-makers and decision-making agencies'? This thesis focuses on the difference between the declared design intention described in current architectural literature regarding portable houses and the political and social practice of placing them in one of the world's most contested territories — the West Bank.Methodologically, a discourse survey, developed with experimental, self-made portable and temporary dwellings in 2002, gives an overview of relevant categories of portable houses: prototypes, parasites, and developers. A fourth category, transformers, interprets portable buildings within the context of the West Bank. This is followed by a material culture study conducted on site in December 2004/January 2005. Finally, several interviews provide subjective perspectives of portable houses in the West Bank. In addition, the works of the scholars Kronenberg, Kozlovsky, Weizman/Segal, Rotbart, and Foucault provide the basis for much of this analysis. In the extreme case of the West Bank, it was determined that designed as site-independent, portable houses in the West Bank carry significant local and regional meaning. As they are industrially fabricated and quickly deployed in large numbers at various, elevated locations, they become instruments of spatial control (observation, psychological demonstration of Israeli power and intimidation, territorial gain, and presence). Furthermore, portable houses here are appointed a political role by various agencies: defining and extending the national boundaries in a state of political indefiniteness and negotiations. The particular construction technology of `portable house' is used by a culture within a well-considered strategy of war.The reality of transportable buildings outside the architectural discourses is based on mass production, clustered distribution at difficult places with the intention for territorial claim, while maintaining strategic flexibility. Ultimately, portable houses need to be redefined as active instruments--rather than neutral products—that create subjective place attachment and identity, actively influence a territorial conflict, and impact spatial order and control. Thus, it can be argued that portable buildings make a territorial claim permanent.

Zhao, Lihua Built Environment Faculty of Built Environment UNSW. "The integration of geographical information systems and multicriteria decision making models for the analysis of branch bank closures". Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Built Environment, 2002. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/33239.

Abstract (sommario):
The research presented in this Thesis is primarily concerned with the field of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) - specifically, the business applications of the technology. The empirical problem addressed is the selection of branch banks as candidates for closure using the network of branch banks of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in the Sydney metropolitan region as the case study. Decisions to close branches are made by the Bank on the basis of performance indicators that are essentially financial. In this research, however, an alternative approach is adopted: the problem is addressed using a set of spatial criteria. Following the deregulation of the finance industry in the 1980's and the rapid introduction of new electronic channels for delivering financial services, the major banking institutions have been engaged in a process of reorganising their networks of branch banks. The most visible manifestation of this has been the ongoing and widespread closure of branches. Selecting branch banks for closure is a typical example of a complex semi-structured multi-dimensional, multi-criteria, decision-making problem. It has been well documented in previous research that Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) models are the most appropriate ones for solving problems in this particular domain. The identification of branches for closure is also characterised by a significant spatial dimension. Decisions are based on a consideration of a number of geographical criteria and various forms of spatial analysis may be involved. An appropriate technology to assist with solving decision-making problems with a significant spatial dimension is a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS). Most SDSS have been based on the integration of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology with analytical models that are proven to be best suited to specific decision-making problems and this is the approach adopted in this research. The prototype MCBC-SDSS (Multi-Criteria Branch Closure SDSS) developed here is based on the integration through the loose coupling of the ArcView GIS software with the Criterium DecisionPlus (CDP) software, which contains the suite of non-spatial analytical models that provide the analytical capability for solving multi-criteria problems. ArcView GIS is used as the engine that drives the system and to provide the analytical and display facilities to support the spatial data involved. Two MCDM models from the CDP software are used to support the decision-making analysis - the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique (SMART). The integration of GIS with the MCDM models is based on a considerable amount of software enhancement, interface development, and computer programming. The development of the integrated system is designed to create an intelligent and user-friendly SDSS, the application of which, from the user's perspective, is a seamless operation. The success of the MCBC-SDSS is demonstrated by its application to identify candidates for closure among the 197 branches of the CBA in the Sydney metropolitan area in 2000 - the year when the building of the database for the research had been completed. The analysis is based purely on spatial considerations that have been gleaned from a major review of the literature that previous researchers have identified as affecting branch viability and performance. A set of 17 spatial variables was used as the criteria in the MCDM models. The criteria are organised in two blocks: the first includes 9 criteria relating to the characteristics of demand for branch service in the branch trade areas ('catchment area' specific criteria) while the second includes 8 criteria relating to aspects of supply provided by the existing branches in their location ('location specific' criteria). Using the developed approach, the MCBC-SDSS has been used directly to compare alternatives against criteria, not only spatial based but also financial ones, thus providing a basis for identifying the best choices regarding branch closure. The steps in the preparation of the data and the iterative procedure for implementing the MCDM models are explained and illustrated. This involves building the initial evaluation matrix, normalising the raw criteria scores, assigning weights to the criteria, and calculating priorities. Based on these, the AHP and SMART models then calculate a decision score for each branch that is used as the basis for creating the preference ranking of the branches. In this, branches with a high rank score based on the combined weighted contribution of the 17 criteria are considered to be operationally viable. On the other hand, branches with the lowest rank scores are considered as potential candidates for closure. The preference rankings generated by the models have been tested to examine their robustness in terms of the validity of criteria and their weights used in the decision analysis. Sensitivity analysis has been conducted, the results of which show that the preference rankings are stable. Different approaches have been used to validate the initial criteria, and analyse their contribution to the ranking of branch banks for closure. These help identify critical spatial variables among the 17 initial criteria selected, and suggest that some of the criteria initially selected could be deleted from the criteria list used to generate the preference rankings without substantially affecting the results. The reasonableness of the resulting preference ranking has been further demonstrated from analyses based on changing criteria weights and alternatives. The research successfully demonstrates one of the ways of enhancing the functionality of a GIS through its integration with non-spatial analytical models to develop a SDSS to aid solving decision-making problems in the selected domain. Given that to date there has been relatively few applications of SDSS similar to that developed in this research to real world decision-making problems, the procedure adopted makes it suitable for decision-making in a range of other service business applications characterised by a significant spatial dimension and multiple outlets including shopping centres, motor car dealerships, restaurant and supermarket chains. Instead of just providing solutions, however, the SDSS-based analysis in this research can better be thought of as adding value to spatial data that forms an important source of information required by decision-makers, providing insight about the situation, uncertainty, objectives, and trade-offs involved in reaching decisions, and being capable of generating alternative scenarios based on different inputs to the models that may be used to identify recommended courses of action. It can lead to better and more effective decision-making in institutions involving multi-outlet retail and service businesses and hence enables both integrated data analysis and modelling while taking multiple criteria and decision-makers' preferences into consideration.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the study was to conduct an evaluation on the effectiveness of the change communications distributed to the occupants of Barclays Towers West, Barclays Africa‟s first green building, in ensuring the sustainability of the change after the move into the building. In addition, recommendations are made to improve the change communications directed towards the building occupants to ensure the sustainability of the change and for future moves to green buildings. The research paper is made up of the following three distinct sections: Section One – Evaluation Research Report: this section outlines the organisational and research context for the study, the objectives of the research and rationale for conducting the research. A brief overview of the key theories and models on change communication that were utilised in the study are discussed, and definitions of important terms are presented. The research methodology is also described which includes an explanation on the evaluation research approach utilised as well as the use of both qualitative and quantitative data in the study. In addition, the results from the research conducted are presented, based on three data collection methods utilised: document analysis, semi-structured interviews and a survey. The results are then analysed and discussed in relation to the literature reviewed on change communication. Recommendations are made on improvements that can be made to the change communications to ensure the sustainability of the change. Section Two – Literature Review: the literature, theories and important concept definitions of organisational change management, change sustainability, change communication and green buildings which are relevant for the research topic and have been used as the theoretical base of the study are explored in this section. A key component of the literature review is the description of the change communication theories and models: communication theory, Armenakis, Harris and Field (2007) Model, and the Barrett (2002) Model. An understanding of the theories and models is imperative, as the effectiveness of the change communications after the move into Barclays Towers West is assessed based on the elements of the change communication theories and models. Section Three – Research Methodology: the research methodology for the study is described in this section. Specifically, the research aims and objectives, the research paradigm, the population and sampling, data collection, data analysis and ethical considerations are outlined. A key component of the section is the explanation on how the data was collected and analysed in the study and the sequence. The post move communications and artefacts and meeting presentations were collected first. The qualitative data was analysed and used to determine the questions for the semi structured interviews. Semi-structured one on one interviews were then conducted. The qualitative data and the change communication theories and models used in this study were used to determine the questions for the online survey. An online survey tool was used to administer a predominantly five point Likert scale questionnaire with an invitation to participate emailed to the building occupants. The quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistical analysis. Research Findings: The key research findings revealed that the messages communicated to the occupants after the move into the building have been mainly focused on operational matters and rarely on educating occupants on the green aspects of the building. A large majority of the survey respondents were aware of the building facilities, details and required behaviour. However it was found that the occupants, Line Managers and Senior Management are not displaying the required behaviour for a green building and do not know how to use some of the building facilities. A major gap was found in communicating with people moving into the building. In addition it was found that some of the information communicated to occupants is outdated. Written communications are used extensively and face to face communication is rarely used to communicate with the occupants. As a result, a number of changes are required to improve the effectiveness of the change communications to the occupants of Barclays Towers West. The improvements include communicating to new occupants; utilising additional communication channels; focusing communication messages on educating occupants on the strategic objectives for the building; rationale for building features and facilities; how to use the facilities and the impact of their behaviour on the building objectives being achieved.

This is a study of how and why nationality, as a perception of time, space, and political authority, was diffused in the Ottoman Empire, leading to its fragmentation into two nation state polities - namely, Greece and Turkey. These questions are addressed through the study of banknotes. In studying the process whereby the banknote became a territorial currency, which allowed the impersonal and catholic mediation of transactions across, yet only within, national territories, the banknote is treated as a 'window' to the normative alignment of a national community. In studying the banknote as a cultural artifact that empowers and at the same time delineates a protocol of social interaction - ie. economic exchange - the banknote is treated as a window to a process of ‘sign-alignment', namely the homogenization of cultural expression.

Abstract (sommario):
Bank holding companies (BHC) that sustain significant losses without adequate capital can become insolvent and pose a systemic risk to the U.S. economy, yet 6 BHCs' had losses higher today than they were prior to 2008 recession. BHCs continue to experience significant losses as senior managers lack effective practice towards capital regulation. The research question for this study was, what is the level of consensus among banking finance experts across the U.S. on how to recognize a senior manager's effective practice towards capital regulation in BHCs. The purpose of this qualitative e-Delphi study was to build consensus among banking finance experts across the U.S. on how to recognize a senior manager's effective practice towards capital regulation in BHCs. The conceptual framework for this study was Compliance and Ethics Group's standard that improves quality and performance, principal-agent theory and goal theory. This e-Delphi study built consensus among 10 finance experts who are: employed a minimum of 10 years in banking; possessed an MBA in Finance; and, currently employed as a consultant to a large bank in the U.S. Data were collected from 3 electronic questionnaires submitted through Qualtrics. Data were analyzed using theoretical triangulation, coding, and thematic analysis. The data analysis revealed consensus on 33 activities constituting a senior manager's effective practice towards capital regulation in BHCs, with the highest agreement on internal control activities. The identification of these effective practices towards capital regulation in banks can effect social change by providing senior bank managers in BHCs with uniform principles that can reduce the level of risk behavior while meeting capital regulation requirement and shareholder objectives.

Abstract (sommario):
Border delineations and walls have been used to protect cities and towns throughout history. In the present age of modern surveillance and advanced military technology however, physical walls have much less significance for the protection of present-day states and nations and have become artifacts of mostly symbolic significance. In an increasingly connected world with the potential for becoming more compassionate, the symbolic significance of the border wall, barrier, and delineation demands to be reassessed and reapproached. This opens the possibility of designing a new binational border typology with functions of business, tourism, cultural education, hospitality, and public assembly that can mutually benefit bordering regions. The site of this thesis is the 1949 Armistice Agreement, or Green Line, on the perimeter of the West Bank of Palestine – a prolonged border conflict of our time and a powerful example of spatial injustice. Through a combination of ancient and modern materials, this thesis explores the potential of hospitality through the design of a roadside inn to recognize the history of its place and create a physical and symbolic bridge for future cooperation. In addition to lodging for travelers, the program incorporates a museum, artist workshops, dining areas, gift shops, and gathering spaces. Straddling the Green Line along the Dead Sea shoreline, it is designed to carry the memory of the land, but also to symbolize a future that joins divided communities.
Master of Architecture
This thesis looks at the problem of border delineations and walls within a modern context and proposes the use of borders for functions supplementary to border control and security – such as local commerce, cultural spaces, tourism, hospitality, and public gathering places. Spatial justice involves the fair and equitable distribution within a space of resources and opportunities. In addition to lodging for travelers, the project's program, or scope of work, includes a museum, artist workshops, dining areas, gift shops, and gathering spaces. Straddling the Green Line along the Dead Sea shoreline, it is designed to carry the memory of the land, but also to symbolize a future that joins divided communities.

Abstract (sommario):
This study highlights one way by means of which South Africa can become more sustainable namely by applying "green building" and "green design" in the local context. The study asks the question: What is the role of building regulations in sustainable local governance as provided for in South African environmental and local government legislation? Schedule 4(B) in conjunction with section 156(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (hereafter the Constitution) states that local government has the power to execute law–making and executive powers in relation to building regulations. The Constitution further provides in section 24, the environmental right, read together with section 152(1) that municipalities are co–responsible with the other two spheres of government to protect the environment and to secure an environment that is not detrimental to the health or well–being of people. The Local Government: Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000 in section 4(2)(d), (i) and (j) further states that municipalities have the duty to provide services that is effective, fair and sustainable. Municipalities are bound by national legislation (including the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 and national legislation dealing with building regulations, specifically the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977) in how it deals with and within the environment. The South African National Standards (SANS) 10400–XA: 2011 finds its application specifically on environmental sustainability and energy usage in buildings. The link between these laws and instruments (such as SANS and other projects) and the notion of "green building" is explored in this dissertation. Municipalities in the Western Cape Province are making an effort to adhere to the above national laws. More specifically the City of Cape Town has a Problem Building By–law and the Drakenstein Municipality (Paarl) has a green building manual to regulate "green building" and "green design". With reference to these two municipalities, this study serves to show that some South African municipalities strive toward "green building" and "green design", but more have to be done nationally in order to be pro–active in this regard.

This thesis presents a seismic evaluation of the unreinforced masonry buildings in Boston Massachusetts's historical Back Bay neighborhood. This Boston district, famous for its rows of Victorian brownstone residences is considered to be one of the best preserved examples of 19 'h century urban design. There are a few specific reasons to speculate at the vulnerability of this neighborhood to seismic events. First, in 1755, one hundred years before the Back Bay started to be built, the most massive earthquake of New England's history occurred, damaging unreinforced masonry structures in Boston. Approximately eighty percent of the Back Bay neighborhood is now made up of unreinforced masonry structures. Second, seismic design was not required in Boston until 1975, which means a staggering majority of the buildings in the Back Bay were constructed without any kind of anti-seismic lateral system. The aim of this thesis is to assess the structural response of the unreinforced masonry homes of the Back Bay to seismic activity due to these issues. A case study of an unreinforced masonry building in the neighborhood is assessed through structural analysis of its facade and party walls. The performance of this building is extrapolated to represent the state of the unreinforced masonry buildings of the Back Bay.

The recent financial crisis has brought a huge loss of faith in economic rationality and the economic discipline. For the current financial industry, how to re-build "Trust" with customers is the one of biggest issues. Although we know that the strong relationship between the deep level of trust and the banking business has high potential, it has not yet been optimized, especially in online transaction banking. This is in part due to customers' perception of higher risk in the absence of traditional face to face interaction. Recent findings have shown that facial cues can have a powerful impact on trust building. However, there is also evidence that images of faces in some cases can decrease online interactions. Thus, the goal of this thesis is to investigate the impact of different types of facial attributes and which customer profiles will most benefit from such facial images in online banking. In an experimental setting, this research created a personalized web site which features the banker's representative, and conducted an investment game in order to correlate them with investment performance. This research also included rating trustworthiness on a banking advisor's photo and a demographic questionnaire for statistic trust profiling. Understanding a subject's decision making mechanism by giving them advisor's facial stimuli in a naturalistic online context, with integrating communication will provide an important potential for building and promoting trust, which further suggest Suruga Bank will be in an unique position by capitalizing on the new marketing methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
The study address minimizing energy consumption in buildings that operate on the demand side of electricity systems in Australia. This interest in demand-side measures extends to the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system in buildings as such system represent 50-60% total energy consumption in an average building in Australia. Currently, building thermal performance classified into three classes based on dead-band temperature range in European and ISO standards. As per literature review there is no significant difference in thermal comfort satisfaction percentages in actual buildings operating within these three temperature performance classes. The study quantified possible energy savings for extreme thermal comfort ranges in ISO & European standards for an HVAC system of a typical medium-sized office building in Australia. The energy savings quantified using a standard simulation software package. The simulation exercise used a prototype building which represents a medium-size office building in Australia. Three cities selected for the simulation Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane representing different climate zones in Australia. The studies revealed energy savings in all the three cities with higher percentage savings for heating than cooling. The study revealed peak demand energy savings when temperature dead band changed from 2k to 4k and from 4k to 6k in all the three cities under steady state conditions. Greenhouse gas emissions increase with energy demand creating climate change issues. Findings indicate C02 savings percentages for Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney when temperature dead band settings changed from 2k (Class A) to 4 k (Class B). The effectiveness of the above strategies needs to be tested in real commercial buildings in large scale to address the issue of minimizing energy consumption in commercial buildings in Australia.

Masonite Beams is a company that produces I-beams. They are also working on developing a building system for industrial production of building components. A part of their building system is a composite floor, consisting of LVL and I-beams. At the moment they are working with a new type of joint between floor and wall, where the connection between floor and wall will be solved by a protrusion of the LVL being placed of a hanger mounted on the wall. The aim for this project was to find a screw pattern where the resistance of the protrusion is enough to handle the support reaction that can occure. A screw pattern that would be capable to manage the support reaction was derived by practical tests, done in Masonite Beams lab. When a screw pattern with a capacity high enough for the support reactions had been found, 5 samples of the same screw pattern were tested to be able to calculate a characteristic resistance. During the testing the performance of the included components were also evaluated. The support reaction that floor potentially could be exposed to was calculated to 6,25 kN, a value lower than the resistance, that was calculated to 7,27 kN.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1994, the Palestinian self-government was established on the Gaza Strip and West Bank (hereinafter WBGS) as result of Oslo process. One of its main challenges of that government was how to deal with this debilitating heritage whilst promoting institutions and institutional capacity building, both of which began gaining momentum from 1994 onwards. However, the reality of the Oslo process has meant that in fact what has occurred is a concentration of power into the hand of the ruling elite (Arafat and the small elite around him) at the expense of the majority of population who were denied access to national level institutions of state functions. This state of the political marginalization (or denationalization) of the majority of population hindered the emergence of a democratic political system based on the principles of the separation of powers, accountability, and transparency, and stifled the emergence of the rule of law. Arafat and the small elite around him had not only hindered the emergence of a democratic political system, and stifled the emergence of the rule of law, but also the emergence of a bureaucratic system with a recruitment system based on achievement rather than informal/irrational criteria (competence), highly specialized and differentiated administrative role of civil servants (differentiation), and well established and thoroughly understandable system of super-ordination and sub-ordination (hierarchy) as Max Weber suggests. In response, the opponents of Oslo process & Arafat- Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and PFLP-had strengthened their institutions, and started to practice Para-state functions parallel to PA institutions (as chapter V shows). These instituions are protected by the militia of the political party with which it is affiliated, like Izz El Din El Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, and others. Accordingly, State- in the term of central organization with the power of issuing authoritative binding legal rules and monopolizing coercion (as Joel Migdal suggests)- was absent from the Palestinian scene.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis draws upon contemporary research in economic geography and the social sciences to examine the reconfiguration of rural service space. In particular, the thesis explores the changing nature of mainstream retail financial service provision in rural England and the associated development, structure and use of alternative and diverse economic networks amongst rural communities and households. The thesis critically examines concepts of financial exclusion, and proposes the adoption ·of a more spatially sensitive approach to examine the variegated connectivity of finance to everyday places, through a financial ecologies approach. The thesis is based upon empirical research collected through statistical analysis and mapping of bank and building society branch closures between 1989-2009; ethnographic research with alternative and diverse economic institutions; semi-structured interviews with policy stakeholders, project coordinators and households; and secondary analysis of policy documents. I adopt a case study approach to examine the processes and impacts of service provision within three rural areas. In particular, the thesis explores three aspects of rural financial service change; in order to understand the spatial outcomes and impacts of processes of money and finance on the local financial landscape and everyday practices of financial engagement. First, the research explores the scale, geography and socio-economic variation of bank and building societies in England, and examines the specific local impacts of these broader institutional changes within three rural districts. Second, the thesis draws upon institutionalist perspectives to examine the development and use of alternative and diverse economic institutions in the context of broader social, political, and cultural factors. Third, the research considers the local impacts of financial service change, and examines the everyday engagement practices of rural households in relation to the financial subjectivities that are called forth and assembled in place. The thesis indicates the importance of space and place in determining and shaping the nature of rural service change, the impacts of which depend on the diverse institutional fabric of an area, and the local attitudes, social norms and economic practices of individuals, households and communities in rural England.

The objective of this thesis is to explore the transformation of an existing building type and the application of the support/infill concept in a new context. For this purpose, a traditional Back Bay residential form in Boston has been selected. The study has been carried out in two parts: (I) Part One consists of an observational study of the existing context. This involved an analysis on the levels of urban structure, urban tissue and lot unit. The rules of the original Back Bay house type are identified in the last section. (II) The second part comprises a design study based on the observed context by inserting new constraints. To discover possible floor-plan variations within the type, the support/ infill distinction has been applied. Furthermore, the application of the modified type to irregular lot forms is studied. At the end of the thesis unresolved issues are discussed..

Abstract (sommario):
This study examines how a music band can manage to build an image and story using social media platforms after the infamous break of the golden era. To put it further into perspective, the second part of the study focuses on the fans’ connection to the band and how they use social media themselves. The purpose of this study is, through interviews, qualitative content analysis and rhetorical analysis, to explore how a band successfully use social media to keep their fans’ anticipation alive. To explore my purpose, I have conducted and analysed qualitative interviews. In the analysis section, the data has been interpreted in relation to theories of star image, participatory fandom and the live experience as well as compared to previous research while connecting my own analysis to it. The study discusses tendencies shown in the results when analysing posts from Ghost’s official Facebook page, as well as how participatory fandom as we know it may be at risk, as social media giants keep growing and eliminating other forums that have been vital to fans.

Abstract (sommario):
Interest in buildings with wood as a load-bearing frame has increased. Everything is built from tall residential buildings to sports arenas where wood is the dominant material. The development has been rapid in wood construction, this has led to the fact that today it is possible to use wooden frame and board material to meet the corresponding safety and fire requirements that were previously only possible for construction with concrete and steel. Higher and larger buildings also carry higher loads where pressure perpendicular to the fibers is something that needs to be considered. This entails certain challenges when designing clean wooden structures where the effective areas will be very large in order to meet the dimensioning requirements that are currently set according to Swedish building regulations. This problem is based on the fact that wood as a material has different properties in different directions and that the material is relatively weak when loaded perpendicular to the fiber direction. The problem is often concentrated in zones where pillars meet beams where the beam is easily deformed.  The purpose of this study is to investigate whether cross-laminated timber can function as a reinforcement measure between pillars and beams. To investigate this, 25 glulam timber beams with various modifications were pressure tested and reinforced with one, two or three slats of cross-laminated timber. The result is then compared with the compressive force capacity of an unreinforced beam. The dimensions of the specimens are 86x315 mm where the glulam is of the GL30C type and where the strength class of the cross-glued slats is C24. The idea is to achieve a globally stronger unit. The experimental experiments use a hydraulic press that measures force and displacement and a non-contact measuring system that measures strains. The results show that the compressive force capacity increases with an increased number of cross-laminated timber slats. Comparison between an unreinforced joint and a joint reinforced with 3 KL slats shows an increase in compressive force capacity of 130% at a displacement of 10 mm. The load spreading in the material is difficult to define exactly, but it indicates that some form of load spreading takes place. The effective area at the glulam increases as strains occur during the entire length of the KL slat. The conclusion of the study is that cross-laminated timber as a reinforcing measure can increase the compressive capacity of a joint.

Abstract (sommario):
Two approaches to the provision of pan-European paging services are now becoming established. One of these relies on satellite-based services to be provided by INMARSAT, BT and others at L-Band. The second, the European Radio Messaging Service (ERMES), is a terrestrial system currently under development and scheduled to operate at 169 MHz. Both of these systems may however encounter a problem in delivering adequate signal strength within multi-storey buildings. In the case of the satellite systems due to the necessarily limited transmitter power, and in the terrestrial case due to increasing use of RF opaque glass in new building construction. One solution could be to transpond paging signals down through the building from the roof. Since ERMES is a multichannel service, it is technically feasible to transpond both satellite and ERMES originated paging signals on whatever ERMES channel can be identified as free of other users. The work described here is the result of an extensive radio wave propagation measurement campaign carried out for both approaches. Propagation effects on satellite-mobile systems in the lower microwave part of the spectrum have been the subject of considerable study in the last few years. Most of the interest has been centered at frequencies near 900 MHz and 1.5 GHz, where tree attenuation is considered one of the dominant effects for rural and suburban areas. Since several frequency bands have been considered for future mobile satellite systems, it was thought appropriate to perform measurements of the attenuation induced by trees on satellite-like paths over a wide range of frequencies (1-4 GHz). These measurements could then be used to evaluate the comparable performance of mobile satellite systems at different elevation angles and over a wide frequency range. They could also provide a further insight into the applicability of the empirical formula on vegetation effects quoted in the CCIR report AB/5.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: The way dementia is understood shapes public attitudes towards those living with the condition and professional approaches to treatment. This has implications for the experiences of those living with dementia. Theoretical models currently guiding care and informing public perceptions are limited and incomplete, reflecting professional rather than personal experience. They fail to capture the complexity of this experience, potential for adaptation and role of participation relative to health and wellbeing. Research presented in this thesis contributes towards bridging this gap through developing a conceptualisation grounded in the first-hand accounts, reflecting the complexity of living with dementia and exploring factors and processes impacting upon adaptation and participation. Methods: A modified realist explanatory theory building method was used. This included triangulation of subjective perspectives of people living with dementia with complexity- consistent theories, identification of factors contributing to the overall experience, as well as causal mechanisms and processes involved. The first phase used qualitative meta- synthesis of 34 studies on first-hand experience and informed the development of a tentative model of dementia experience. During the next phase, this initial model was examined against concepts and ideas from 11 complexity-consistent theoretical frameworks. In the final phase, a model was scrutinised against narrative data of 12 people living with dementia and 19 family members. Results: The experience of living with dementia is conceptualised as “adaptation through participation”, emerging from ongoing, dynamic and non-linear interactions between multiple contributory factors and causal mechanisms, both personal and environmental. The model identifies and explains causal dynamics and adaptive processes shaping outcomes in dementia. Possible trajectories of these outcomes are explored, with the model indicating that these should be considered in terms of a spectrum rather than distinct stages of dementia progression. “A tree and a forest” metaphor is used to depict the proposed model and further explain findings. Diverse understandings of the model’s key conceptual domains are captured and explored relative to implications for the “adaptation through participation” process in dementia. Finally, findings are discussed in the context of the relevant theory and research evidence. Conclusions: By emphasising and explaining the potential for adaptation and enduring participation in dementia, the conceptualisation proposed in this thesis can contribute towards a shift in current policy and practice from the management of deficits to proactive support for continuity of participation throughout the dementia spectrum. However, before this is realised, additional work aiming at validation of the proposed model, further clarification of conceptual domains and causal relationships between them, and exploration of the role of multiple accounts of dementia experience, representing perspectives of people living with dementia and the important others; is required to establish the practical utility of the proposed model.

Abstract (sommario):
Industrial buildings are a part of the growing consumption of energy, according to the Swedish Energy Agency, which imposes demands on energy use. Therefore, there is a demand to reduce energy requirements and build with a focus on sustainability. The purpose of this study was to investigate energy adaptations that promote economic sustainability. The study was conducted as a case study of an existing truck building, where possible energy adjustments were investigated to improve the sustainability of the building's energy demands. The methods used were several energy and environmental-focused multicriteria analyzes and energy calculations. Multicriteria analyzes gave both an improved building envelope and heat source, which contributed to a lower energy requirement for the building. In addition to energy-based solutions, further changes were made to extend the sustainability of the building's future in the environmental issue, such as the establishment of a greenfactor. The conclusion of the study was that it is possible to build an energy-efficient truck building in a economically sustainable way. By establishing a geothermal heating system and switching to environmentally sustainable materials in the building envelope, there is a pay-back time for the truck building which shows an economic sustainability after about 18 years.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the possibilities of financing housing, in particular savings instrument. The main goal is to determine, what are the differences between building savings banks, especially in the product. Another goal is to monitor and evaluate the options selected housing financing in the Czech Republic. The work focuses on market analysis, building societies and comparison of their products. The first part deals with the explanation of the concepts of housing and savings, including the establishment process of building savings and loan drawdown of savings. Attention is also paid to support housing programs from various government entities. Another part describes building savings banks operating on the Czech market. The last part describes and compares the conditions of products, what conclusions arise that are described in the summary at the end of work. Finally, the work summarizes the most important facts from all the chapters.

Abstract (sommario):
What if you could spend an idea to earn money? Detected through an anthropological lens, rather than a strictly economical one; the context of this thesis inherits a feverishly fluctuating South African economy. It is pitted against often contradictory and interchanging consciousness of opportunity in the so-called formalised and informalised markets; and within the flaring gap that exists between the two. This gap finds spatiality in South African post-Apartheid cities, in which physical buffers to dense marginalised communities remain visible; as in the particular case of Johannesburg. Investigations into the spatial orders of postmodern ‘money institutions’ (including the bank, shopping mall and casino) show that the urban phenomena of emergent ‘money borders’ also echoes itself in its architecture. Through historical analysis, the capitalist construct displays itself increasingly as a closed protected entity. Underneath the exquisitely woven Persian rug of privatised space, trapdoors to dubious and illicit spots often exist, In this space, it is all smoke and mirrors. The rules can be broken for the desires of those inside, and keep out the supposed risks of those who are not. Its detachedness is reconstructed through the theoretical perspectives of Michel Foucault and Georg Simmel; this examination providing grasp for spatial tools which, if altered, could recalibrate the way in which privatised spaces open and close themselves to the public. How can a reassembly of spatial and psychological thresholds in financial institutions assist in making capital more accessible to the idea-bearer? The results of this research propose reworked syntax of physical legibilities which make entry, participation and exit in financial systems understandable and therefore more possible. An idea trading floor (idea bank) is designated as the principal programme; where the possibility of intersection of capital, presented by an investor meeting an innovator with an idea is available, in a stripped down form. Beginning with the shell of the capitalist epitome ‘free market’ stock trading floor, a new re-mastered hybrid is born. Usually fascinatingly chaotic, these spaces are viscerally experiential but also remain inaccessible to many parts of society. What if we could sell stocks for entrepreneurial ideas, in a physical, space-folded, compact trading floor, partly quotidian like that of a supermarket, and partly fantastical and alluring? Fertile ground for such a transaction point is identified at an intersection in Wynberg, Johannesburg; which currently lies suspended along a highly-trafficked pedestrian movement route between Alexandra and Sandton, and is earmarked for a future transport interchange. Space-folding techniques underline the conceptual arrangement of the architecture; with the superimposition of idea bank with micro-factories and gathering spaces. These programmes are vertically punctured by a circulation vein to the proposed bus terminal below the site, revealing the processes of seed capital generation for a passing commuter or visitor: In addition, through spatially centralising the idea; creativity and the possibility for change; rather than money as an end in itself; this thesis speculates cause-led spatial practice rather than a profit-led one. Ultimately, if capital has a wall around it (literally and fi guratively), perhaps architecture could put a door in it; in doing so making cognizant the presence of the wall; and therefore the possibly to transverse through it.

Sferi, Rahma. "The effect of the color scheme of a bank interior on subjects' evaluations of the bank and its employees". Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/33205.

Abstract (sommario):
Previous research suggested that unlike marketing goods, marketing services required manipulating the physical environment as well as price, promotion, production, and place. This indicates a role for interior design in the marketing strategy of a service business. Research also indicated that little was known about the effect of the different environmental components, especially the color component on consumers' responses. Most color research in marketing is in advertising and packaging but most of it is proprietary and thus unpublished. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of color on subjects' evaluations of a bank and its employees. The choice of banks was motivated by the fact that banks have a high degree of familiarity among potential subjects. An experiment was designed in which subjects were provided with an illustration of a bank's interior and asked to evaluate the service quality at that bank. The illustrations were computer generated and were identical except for the color scheme. The study used monochromatic color schemes, manipulating the hue (warm and cool) at two value levels (dark and light), generating four treatments (light-warm, dark-warm, light-cool, and dark-cool). A convenience sample of 486 college students, in two lower division classes, was used. Subjects were each assigned a treatment at random, and asked to rate the banks and their employees on eight criteria: reliability, responsiveness, competence, courtesy, access, communication, security, and understanding. The treatments were in the form of 5 1/2 X 4 inch computer printouts attached to the last page of a questionnaire package. The experiment was conducted at the beginning of class time and subjects were given directions by the class instructors. The experiment took subjects an average time of five minutes to complete. The study investigated the effect of color on subjects' evaluations of the eight dependent measures in terms of three independent variables: value, hue, and subjects' gender. The data collected indicated that value had more effect on the dependent variables than did hue or subjects' gender. Banks with dark color schemes were thought to be more reliable, more competent, and safer. Banks with a light color scheme scored significantly better in terms of courtesy and communication, and scales relating to access. In terms of hue, warm color schemes had a higher mean score on courtesy, while the cool color schemes scored higher on competence. Warm hues were found to be more aesthetically pleasing and more familiar than the cool ones. Gender yielded an effect only on the responsiveness variable where mean scores of female subjects were higher than males' scores. Although the study had some limitations the results indicated that there is potential for using specific color choices in bank interiors to foster a desired image. Specifically value can be varied throughout a bank interior to communicate different messages to customers. Dark values could be applied in the teller area to project the impression of safety and privacy that customers need. In the loan department light values can be used to communicate consideration and accessibility. Findings from this study can be of use in other service oriented businesses with role demands similar to banks.
