Abstract (sommario):
Abstract (sommario):
Francke lebte inzwischen in Hamburg. Spener has arrived in Dresden and after having worked there for one and a half years he has somewhat settled into live at court. A large number of the letters that have been preserved are addressed to various clergy in electoral Saxony. In those letters, Spener answers questions pertaining to both personal and official matters. Issues dealt with include the appropriate implementation of catechetical instruction after it was made mandatory in 1688. Spener moved his own catechetical exercises from his private home into the chapel of the electoral prince’s widow, Magdalena Sybille. These exercises are the subject of numerous letters. The students’ collegia philobiblica, which had experienced a boom in the previous year on Saxon universities, are scarcely mentioned in the correspondence. However, Spener was in correspondence with the initiators in Leipzig Paul Anton and August Hermann Francke. Anton was now the traveling preacher for electoral prince Johann Georg (IV.), and most of his reports to the senior court preacher in Dresden pertained to the Quietists in southern Europe. Francke was now living in Hamburg. Not a single letter has been preserved between Francke and Spener from this early period, but their correspondence and the issues it dealt with is testified to by Spener’s intensive correspondence with his former aide Hermann von der Hardt, who was now Francke’s traveling companion. For the Pietism to come two subjects are crucial: In the question of the appropriate pedagogical approach, Spener had a much more progressive view than Francke encountered at the same time in Hamburg. The second question is the issue of perfectionism, based upon the exegesis of Romans 7. Overall, the events in Hamburg can be understood as a prelude to the debates surrounding Pietism, which began shortly thereafter in Leipzig. The term “Pietism” appears first in the summer of 1689, but already in 1688 a group had formed, which was singled-out by its opponents and whose members were called “Spenerians”. This observation highlights the importance of the events of 1688 as a prequel to the Pietist movement starting in 1689. Spener discusses the political situation in Europe, which was overshadowed by the war between France and Germany and the beginning of the reign of William the Orange (III) in England. Spener was interested in to what extent the German Lutheran church was being influenced by these events. Spener himself exhibits a strong apocalyptic frame of mind, which due to his “hope for better times” did not result in a position of resignation. In addition to Spener’s scholarly correspondence with theological colleagues, there is also a very philosophical letter addressed to Ehrenfried Walter von Tschirnhaus.:Inhalt Vorwort Abkürzungen und Siglen Abgekürzt zitierte Literatur und Quellen Briefe des Jahres 1688 Nr. 1 an [Hektor Gottfried Masius in Kopenhagen] 2.1.1688 Nr. 2 an [Johann Heinrich Sprögel in Quedlinburg 10.1.1688 Nr. 3 an Johann Jacob Spener in Leipzig 10.1.1688 Nr. 4 an [einen Amtsbruder] 12.1.1688 Nr. 5 an [einen Amtsbruder] 24.1.1688 Nr. 6 an [Franz Wolff in Rostock] 27.1.1688 Nr. 7 an [Justus Christoph Schomerus in Rostock] 28.1.1688 Nr. 8 an Philipp Reinhard Spener in Leipzig [Januar] 1688 Nr. 9 an Pfalzgraf Christian II. von Pfalz-Birkenfeld in Bischweiler Januar 1688 Nr. 10 an [Johann Fischer in Riga] 4.2.1688 Nr. 11 an [Nathanael Ecclitius in Frankfurt a. Abstract (sommario):
Wideband and dual band stacked microstrip patch antennas are investigated for the new wideband and dual band applications in the area of telecommunications. In this thesis, aperture-coupled stacked patch antennas are used to increase the bandwidth of the microstrip patch antenna. By this technique, antennas with 51% bandwidth at 6.1 GHz and 43% bandwidth at 8 GHz satisfying S11<
-15 dB are designed, manufactured and measured. A dual-band aperture coupled stacked microstrip patch antenna operating at 1.8 GHz with 3.8% bandwidth and at 2.4 GHz with 1.6% bandwidth is designed, produced and measured for mobile phone and WLAN applications. In addition, an aperture coupled stacked microstrip patch antenna which operates at PCS frequencies in 1.7-1.95 GHz band is designed. Dual and circularly polarized stacked aperture coupled microstrip patch antennas are also investigated. A triple band dual polarized aperture coupled stacked microstrip patch antenna is designed to operate at 900 MHz, at 1.21 GHZ and at 2.15 GHz. Mutual coupling between aperture coupled stacked microstrip patch antennas are examined and compared with the coupling of aperture coupled microstrip patch antennas

Abstract (sommario):
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1987 / Town and Country Hotel, San Diego, California
The Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope, located in west-central New Mexico, obtains high-resolution radio images of astronomical objects by using Fourier aperture synthesis with 27 antennas. With the addition of X-band to its receiving capabilities by 1989, and when arrayed with the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex (GDSCC), the VLA will double the Deep Space Network (DSN) receiving aperture in the U. S. longitude for signals from Voyager 2 at Neptune. This paper describes the VLA and the installation of the X-band system, its operation and performance for Voyager data reception, and its capabilities for other science at X-band.

Spener, Philipp Jakob. "Briefe aus der Frankfurter Zeit / Band 2: 1675–1676". Mohr Siebeck, 1996. https://slub.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A16926.

Abstract (sommario):
This volume contains the surviving letters from the years 1675 and 1676. In addition to the letters written by Spener, there are letters from his correspondent partners in which they express their reactions to the publication of Spener’s 'Pia Desideria' (1675). The most frequent subjects are Pia Desideria and the themes discussed in that work. These include 1) the reform of the church, 2) Spener’s controversial notions on the hope of better times for the church, which he based on 3) the biblical promise of a large-scale conversion of the Jews, 4) the announcement of the fall of the Roman Catholic Church as the 'Babel' of the Apocalypse, 5) the introduction of collegia pietatis and similar gatherings for and with theology students. Other topics dealt with in the letters include decisions pertaining to personnel, the possibility of a union between Lutherans and the Reformed, the persecuted Lutherans in Hungary and regional disputes, such as in Danzig. Also discussed in the letters are various publishing projects, including the completion of a Bible commentary which was to include Luther’s comments. There are also pastoral letters to other pastors and members of the nobility. Subjects from earlier letters are also dealt with, such as keeping the Sabbath (Sunday), church discipline and the growing specter of atheism. For the first time, the name of Jakob Böhme is mentioned, who will become a regular topic for discussion in later letters. Technical note: The text of this volume is searchable by OCR-on-the-fly. Abstract (sommario):
At the moment Swedish Transport Administration uses a monitor system that candetect urgent errors as warm ball-bearings and flat wheels etc. with stationarydetectors. To avoid these errors Swedish Transport Administration, UPWIS AB andUppsala University work with a system that will continuously monitoring the train todetect the errors as fast as possible. This will save money in the future for SwedishTransport Administration and all other partners that use the rails.Swedish Transport Administration has already RFID readers beside the rail to detecttrains position. The new monitoring system will use these readers and send data fromthe monitoring system via these readers to a database. The aim of this thesis work is to design and build a RFID antenna to send data fromthe monitoring system to the RFID readers. The antenna should be a circularpolarized and it needs to manage the harsh environment on the train. This thesis work started with a theoretical study which investigated four commonantenna types (dipole, loop, PIFA and patch/microstrip) to evaluate which antennatype that is the best solution for this application. It was decided to design a patchantenna from the theoretical study since it fulfils all the requirements for the antenna.Simulations and tests shows that the antenna is circular polarized and have amaximum reading distance of 5 m for 868 MHz. For 2.45 GHz it is linear polarizedand has a reading distance of at least 10 m. With other hardware settings the antennawill have longer reading distance at 2.45 GHz.When all parts of the test bed was finished the test bed was mounted on themeasurement wagon. The final test shows that the antenna fulfils the task. Theantenna transmitted the data from the sensor boxes to the RFID readers. The report suggests future work to minimize the reading distance and size for theantenna. These are: transfer sensor data to RFID tag by “multi hop”, hardwareimprovement for instance antenna diversity and using another substrate (higherdielectric constant).

Abstract (sommario):
The state-of-the-art standard for short range wireless data transmission is the Ultra Wide Band radio (UWB) standard. UWB provides the maximum data rate of 480 Mbit/s. However, for some data transmission applications this is far from sufficient. Since there already are a lot of research and development activities in wireless technology, the demands on even higher data rates is considered as necessary. The research group of Communication Electronics at ITN has a new concept to design a radio frequency front-end for wireless and high-speed data transmission using a multi-band technique. With help of this technique wideband signals can be transferred simultaneously and then be divided into multiple of sub-bands for down conversion. Compare to other technologies such as Bluetooth and WLAN, only a single narrow band is used, which gives much lower data rate. The assignment is to design one wide-band frequency demultiplexer with eleven sub-bands, 200 MHz each. The principle of the frequency demultiplexer is based on the properties of quarter-wavelength at a certain frequency. This was done with help of input matching networks using microstrip lines. The theoretical maximum data rate is calculated to 6.42 Gbit/s.

Davies, Nigel Clement. "Digital radio and its application in the HF (2-30 MHz) band". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2004. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/637/.

Abstract (sommario):
The propagation environment at high frequencies (HF, 2-30 MHz) has a significant impact on the performance of radio systems (especially data communications). However, the ability to communicate information over very long ranges using ionospheric propagation paths without any intermediate infrastructure makes the use of HF attractive for many applications. In order to increase the utility of HF communications there is a strong desire to increase HF data rates. Currently data rates of up to -2400 bps can be reliably achieved in standard 3 kHz HF channel allocations. Whilst further increases in data rate within the confines of these narrowband frequency allocations is likely, the use of larger bandwidths (contiguous or otherwise) appears to offer potential for much greater throughputs. This requires a greater understanding of the characteristics of wideband channels and also requires transmitting and receiving equipment capable of wideband/multi-channel operation. New waveforms have been proposed for the transmission of higher data rates in extended channel bandwidths (6 kHz). The results of laboratory measurements and analysis of data collected during on-air trials of a number of 16 kbps waveforms are presented. Analysis indicates that operation over surface wave and benign skywave channels is possible, demonstrating the benefit of exploiting greater channel bandwidths. Suitable architectures for the implementation of wideband and multi-channel digital HF radios (software radios) have been investigated. The work presented indicates that it is now possible, for the first time, to construct high performance, direct sampling wideband digital HF receivers. In such a receiver the entire HF band is digitised and then all subsequent processing is undertaken digitally. Conceptually this would allow an arbitrary number of channels to be simultaneously received using a single RF frontend and digitiser. With careful design performance comparable with that of the high performance conventional super-heterodyne single channel receivers can be obtained. A prototype wideband multi-channel digital HF transceiver with this architecture has been implemented and its performance shown to agree with that predicted. A particular challenge in complex systems such as software radios is the deployment of software across a number of heterogeneous processors. A new asynchronous, eventbased, processing architecture which employs messaging to allow processing tasks to be effectively distributed across a multiple processors and buses is proposed. It has been implemented on the digital transceiver platform and its effectiveness has been demonstrated. A new low-power pulse-compression oblique HF ionospheric sounder, known as WHISPER, has been developed. This sounder has been implemented as a software application on the wideband HF digital transceiver. Waveforms suitable for making wideband (-80 kHz) measurements of the channel time varying complex impulse response have been designed. These have been used to make measurements on a 170 km path in the UK during Spring 2001. The results of these measurements have been analysed and confirm the ability of the sounding instrument to measure the channel scattering function and the amplitude and phase within individual modes. A number of possible directions for further analysis, pertinent to the design of wideband HF modems, have been proposed.

Barchiesi, Luigi. "X-ray analysis and broad-band properties of [NeV]-selected type 2 AGN". Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/18749/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The study of type 2 AGN is fundamental to the understanding of the evolution phases of AGN and of their influence on galaxy evolution and to shed light on the origin of the XRB emission at E>30 keV. The goal of my master thesis project is the study of 94 [NeV]-selected type 2 AGN at z = 1 in the COSMOS field, through the analysis of their X-ray spectra and optical-to-far-IR SED. The use of the new X-ray data from the Chandra COSMOS Legacy catalogue extends the X-ray coverage of the COSMOS field and provides a more uniform coverage. We also aim at studying the hosts of type 2 AGN to characterize their parameters, like stellar mass and SFR, and investigate whether these galaxies are different from ``normal'' galaxies due to the AGN influence. Our analysis showed that at least half of the sources are heavily obscured AGN and at least 4% can be classified as CT objects. These new data will be used to improve the estimate of the fraction of CT AGN at z=1 and their contribution to the XRB. The use of a SED fitting code allowed us to separate the AGN emission, in particular the mid-IR emission ascribed to the obscuring torus, that provided us with an estimate of the AGN bolometric power, from the galaxy emission. We used the latter to estimate the stellar mass of the galaxy and the SFR. We compared our results with those expected from the ``main sequence'' galaxies and found that our sources do not differ significantly from “normal” galaxies, hence the AGN has, so far, a limited impact on the host-galaxy SF. We found good correlations between the AGN 12um and 2 - 10 keV luminosities and between the AGN bolometric luminosities derived from the SED fitting and those from the rest-frame 2 - 10 keV intrinsic luminosities. These correlations can be used to estimate the AGN power of sources for which X-ray data are either not available or too shallow. The entire work underlines the importance of a multi-wavelength approach to properly constrain the properties of type 2 AGN.

Abstract (sommario):

Remote sensing of the bathymetry in shallow water of Tampa Bay is examined using the multi-spectral imagery from the Worldview-2 satellite. Utilizing the newly available yellow spectral band in a ratio algorithm, five ratio combinations are compared against a digital elevation model of Tampa Bay. Following the work of Stumpf et al. (2003) ratio algorithm and starting with the work of Loomis (2009) and Densham (2005), the yellow band was combined with the blue, green and red bands separately. These three ratio combination results were compared with the results of the more traditional blue/green combination and a green/red combination. Three transects lines were drawn in a shallow reef area in the north portion Tampa Bay, Florida on Mullet Key near Fort de Soto State Park. In water under 2 meters depth, the substrate contributions were significant in all ratio derived bathymetries. The addition of the yellow band provided more information about the bathymetry than the previous blue/green and green/red combinations by adding more combinations that utilized a reflectance level difference. The yellow band demonstrates less sensitivity to bottom type in two of the transect lines.

Abstract: In this thesis, we employed a software based on finite element method to design two-dimensional photonic crystals, as well as we developed a holographic lithography process to record these photonic structures in amorphous carbon films, coated on glass substrates. In order to present a photonic band gap in a desired region of the optical spectrum, the geometrical parameters of the structures were defined by analyzing the calculated band diagram of the structures. Such definition takes into account the dimensions and forms of the structures that can be fabricated using techniques of holographic lithography. To record the two-dimensional photonic crystals, with cubic and hexagonal symmetries, we used the technique of successive superimposition of fringe patterns. The patterns were generated by the interference of two plane waves (holographic exposures), associated to the lithography of the carbon film by reactive ion etching

Abstract (sommario):
In digital communication systems, satellites give us world wide services. These satellites should effectively use the available bounded frequency spectrum and, therefore, to carry out flexible frequency-band reallocation (FFBR), on-board signal processing implementation on FFBR network is needed. In the future, to design desired dynamic communication systems, very flexible digital signal processing structures will be needed. The hardware, in the system, shall not be changed as simple changes in the software will be made. The purpose of this thesis is to implement an N-channel FFBR network, where N=20. A 20-channel FFBR network consists of different blocks, e.g., DFT, IDFT, complex multipliers, input/output commutators and polyphase components. The whole 20-channel FFBR network will be implemented in VHDL. In a 20-channel FFBR network, it is a 20-point FFT/IFFT required. This 20-point FFT/IFFT is built by a combination of radix-4 and radix-5 butterflies. The Cooley-Tukey FFT algorithm is chosen to build the 20-point FFT/IFFT. The main aim is to build 20-point FFT/IFFT. There are 20 complex multipliers before the IFFT block and 20 complex multipliers after the IFFT block. In the same way, 20 complex multipliers are used before the FFT block and 20 complex multipliers are used after the FFT block. At the input/output to this FFBR network, 20 FIR filters (polyphase components) are used, respectively.

Abstract (sommario):
The vibration of and wave propagation in periodic cellular structures are analyzed. Cellular structures exhibit a number of desirable multifunctional properties, which make them attractive in a variety of engineering applications. These include ultra-light structures, thermal and acoustic insulators, and impact amelioration systems, among others. Cellular structures with deterministic architecture can be considered as example of periodic structures. Periodic structures feature unique wave propagation characteristics, whereby elastic waves propagate only in specific frequency bands, known as "pass band", while they are attenuated in all other frequency bands, known as "stop bands". Such dynamic properties are here exploited to provide cellular structures with the capability of behaving as directional, pass-band mechanical filters, thus complementing their well documented multifunctional characteristics. This work presents a methodology for the analysis of the dynamic behavior of periodic cellular structures, which allows the evaluation of location and spectral width of propagation and attenuation regions. The filtering characteristics are tested and demonstrated for structures of various geometry and topology, including cylindrical grid-like structures, Kagom and eacute; and tetrhedral truss core lattices. Experimental investigations is done on a 2-D lattice manufactured out of aluminum. The complete wave field of the specimen at various frequencies is measured using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV). Experimental results show good agreement with the methodology and computational tools developed in this work. The results demonstrate how wave propagation characteristics are defined by cell geometry and configuration. Numerical and experimental results show the potential of periodic cellular structures as mechanical filters and/or isolators of vibrations.

Abstract (sommario):
Uncertainty is a quantitative attribute that represents the difference between reality and representation of reality. Uncertainty analysis and error propagation modeling reveals the propagation of input error through output. Main objective of this thesis is to model the uncertainty and its propagation for dependent line segments considering positional correlation. The model is implemented as a plug-in, called Propagated Band Model (PBM) Plug-in, to a commercial desktop application, GeoKIT Explorer. Implementation of the model is divided into two parts. In the first one, model is applied to each line segment of the selected network, separately. In the second one, error in each segment is transmitted through the line segments from the start node to the end node of the network. Outcomes are then compared with the results of the G-Band model which is the latest uncertainty model for vector features. To comment on similarities and differences of the outcomes, implementation is handled for two different cases. In the first case, users digitize the selected road network. In the second case recently developed software called Interactive Drawer (ID) is used to allow user to define a new network and simulate this network through Monte Carlo Simulation Method. PBM Plug-in is designed to accept the outputs of these implementation cases as an input, as well as generating and visualizing the uncertainty bands of the given line network. Developed implementations and functionality are basically for expressing the importance and effectiveness of uncertainty handling in vector based geometric features, especially for line segments which construct a network.

Abstract (sommario):
Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) is a known contributor to the green house gas effect. Emissions of CO 2 are rising as the global demand for inexpensive energy is placated through the consumption and combustion of fossil fuels. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) may provide a method to prevent CO 2 from being exhausted to the atmosphere. The carbon may be captured after fossil fuel combustion in a power plant and then stored in a long term facility such as a deep geologic feature. The ability to verify the integrity of carbon storage at a location is key to the success of all CCS projects. A laser-based instrument has been built and tested at Montana State University (MSU) to measure CO 2 concentrations above a carbon storage location. The CO 2 Detection by Differential Absorption (CODDA) Instrument uses a temperature-tunable distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode that is capable of accessing a spectral region, 2.0027 to 2.0042 microns, that contains three CO 2 absorption lines and a water vapor absorption line. This instrument laser is aimed over an open-air, two-way path of about 100 m, allowing measurements of CO 2 concentrations to be made directly above a carbon dioxide release test site. The performance of the instrument for carbon sequestration site monitoring is studied using a newly developed CO 2 controlled release facility. The field and CO 2 releases are managed by the Zero Emissions Research Technology (ZERT) group at MSU. Two test injections were carried out through vertical wells simulating seepage up well paths. Three test injections were done as CO 2 escaped up through a slotted horizontal pipe simulating seepage up through geologic fault zones. The results from these 5 separate controlled release experiments over the course of three summers show that the CODDA Instrument is clearly capable of verifying the integrity of full-scale CO 2 storage operations.

Abstract (sommario):
This work investigates the defect energies, band alignments, and charge carrier recombination in polycrystalline Cu(In1-xGax)(Se1-ySy)2 chalcopyrite thin films and the interrelationship with the alloy composition. Photoluminescence spectroscopy of investigated Cu-poor Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 layers generally shows broad emission lines with the corresponding maxima shifting towards higher energies under decreasing temperature or under increasing excitation power. Admittance spectroscopy of Cu-poor ZnO/CdS/Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 chalcopyrite devices shows that the activation energies of the dominant defect distributions involving donors at the CdS/absorber interface and deep acceptors in the chalcopyrite bulk, increase upon alloying CuInSe2 with S. The band alignments within the Cu(In1-xGax)(Se1-ySy)2 system are determined using the energy position of the bulk acceptor state as a reference. The band gap enlargement under Ga alloying is accommodated almost exclusively in the rise of the conduction band edge, whereas the increase of band gap upon alloying with S is shared between comparable valence and conduction band offsets. The extrapolated band discontinuities [delta]EV(CuInSe2/CuInS2) = -0.23 eV, [delta]EC(CuInSe2/CuInS2) = 0.21 eV, [delta]EV(CuInSe2/CuGaSe2) = 0.036 eV, and [delta]EC(CuInSe2/CuGaSe2) = 0.7 eV are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. Current-voltage analysis of Cu-poor ZnO/CdS/Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 devices reveals recombination barriers which follow the band gap energy of the absorber irrespective of alloy composition, as expected for dominant recombination in the chalcopyrite bulk. In turn, the recombination at the active junction interface prevails in Cu-rich devices which display substantially smaller barriers when compared to the band gap energy of the absorber. The result indicates that the Cu-stoichiometry is the driving compositional parameter for the charge carrier recombination in the chalcopyrite heterojunctions under investigations.

Mo, Yuqi. "Ultra narrow band based IoT networks". Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSEI069/document.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Sigfox rises as a promising candidate dedicated for long-distance and low-power transmissions in the IoT backgrounds. Ultra Narrow Band (UNB), being the communication technology chosen by Sigfox, allows to transmit information through signals whose bandwidth is very limited, typically 100 Hz. Due to the imprecision restraint on electronic devices, it is impossible to transmit UNB signals in orthogonal channels. The natural radio access for this kind of system is thus random ALOHA, in both time and frequency domain. This random access can induce collisions which degrades the networks performance. The aim of this thesis is to characterize the capacity of UNB based networks, as well as to enhance its performance, by considering the randomness in time and frequency. The first contribution of the thesis, is the theoretical and numerical capacity evaluation under idealized and realistic channel conditions, for mono base station (BS) case. Under idealized conditions, we have quantified this capacity for generalized ALOHA case and extended for replications. We highlight the time-frequency duality in UNB systems, and that there exists an optimum replication number for a given network parameter set. Under realistic conditions, we have taken into account the specific spectral interference of UNB systems and propagation path loss (without and with Rayleigh fading) to characterize the performance, with the aid of stochastic geometry. The second contribution is the enhancement of UNB network performance in single BS case. We propose to use successive interference cancellation (SIC) in UNB networks, which allows to mitigate the interference. We have provided a theoretical analysis by considering both SIC and the spectral interference, for mono-BS case. We bring to light the efficiency of SIC in enhancing UNB system performance. The third contribution is the improvement of UNB systems, by exploiting the multiple BS diversity. An analytical performance evaluation considering the simplest selection combining is conducted. In particular, we consider the interference viewed by all the BSs are correlated. Then we apply more complex signal combining technologies such as MRC (max ratio combining) and EGC (equal gain combining), and even interference cancellation across multi-BS in UNB networks. We evaluate the performance improvement that each technology can bring, and compare them with each other. We highlight the efficiency of these multi-BS technologies which allow us to achieve significant performance enhancement compared to mono-BS (e.x. 125 times better performance with global SIC). Last but not least, we experimentally verify the the spectral interference model and network capacity on a cognitive radio testbed

Abstract (sommario):
The black band disease (BBD) microbial consortium often causes mortality of reef-building corals. Microbial chemical interactions (i.e., quorum sensing (QS) and antimicrobial production) may be involved in the BBD disease process. Culture filtrates (CFs) from over 150 bacterial isolates from BBD and the surface mucopolysaccharide layer (SML) of healthy and diseased corals were screened for acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) and Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) QS signals using bacterial reporter strains. AHLs were detected in all BBD mat samples and nine CFs. More than half of the CFs (~55%) tested positive for AI-2. Approximately 27% of growth challenges conducted among 19 isolates showed significant growth inhibition. These findings demonstrate that QS is actively occurring within the BBD microbial mat and that culturable bacteria from BBD and the coral SML are able to produce QS signals and antimicrobial compounds. This is the first study to identify AHL production in association with active coral disease.

Abstract (sommario):
An all-digital phase locked loop for WiGig systems was implemented. The developedall-digital phase locked loop has a targeted frequency range of 2.1-GHz to2.5-GHz. The all-digital phase locked loop replaces the traditional charge pumpbased analog phase locked loop. The digital nature of the all-digital phase lockedloop system makes it superior to the analog counterpart. There are four main partswhich constitutes the all-digital phase locked loop. The time-to-digital converteris one of the important block in all-digital phase locked loop. Several time-to-digital converter architectures were studied and simulated. TheVernier delay based architecture and inverter delay based architecture was designedand evaluated. There architectures provided certain short comings whilethe pseudo-differential time-to-digital converter architecture was chosen, becauseof it’s less occupation of area. Since there exists a relationship between the sizeof the delay cells and it’s time resolution, the pseudo-differential time-to-digitalconverter severed it’s purpose. The whole time-to-digital converter system was tested on a 1 V power supply, reference frequency 54-MHz which is also the reference clock Fref , and a feedbackfrequency Fckv 2.1-GHz. The power consumption was found to be around 2.78mW without dynamic clock gating. When the clock gating or bypassing is done, the power consumption is expected to be reduced considerably. The measuredtime-to-digital converter resolution is around 7 ps to 9 ps with a load variation of15 fF. The inherent delay was also found to be 5 ps. The total output noise powerwas found to be -128 dBm.

Abstract (sommario):
In this work, we used the recent development of DFT/LDA-1/2 method for calculations of excited states in materials. We begin with a summary of the density functional theory (DFT) and included an introduction to the method LDA-1/2 for calculations of excitations in solids. In compiling the results we hope to have demonstrated the usefulness of the LDA-1/2 for calculating alignments of bands at junctions semiconductor / semiconductor and semiconductor / insulator. The method involves the knowledge of basic chemical systems. To do this we chose systems important for several applications, and simulation models which are the limit or beyond the reach of methodologies involving high computational cost, but have been well characterized experimentally. We focus our actions in the study of the predictive capability of the LDA-1/2 for alignments of bands, the band called offsets, particularly important for micro and optoelectronics. When it was not possible to compare our results with experiment, we compared the methods with state of the art as GW. Good results were obtained for band gaps and band offsets of interfaces A1As/GaAs, Si/SiO2, A1N/GaN and CdSe / CdTe, which represent the different types of jun_c poss__veis-tions, with (eg A1As/GaAs, A1N/GaN) and without (eg Si/SiO2, CdSe / CdTe) ^ omuns anions with (eg A1As/GaAs) and without (eg CdSe / CdTe, Si/SiO2) matching network parameters and different types of alignments (\"straddling\" eg A1As/GaAs or \"staggered\" eg CdSe / CdTe). Systematically analyze the behavior of the environment along the interface bandgap, plane by plane scanning behavior of the edges atomic valence and conduction with LDA-half in comparison with LDA, or comparing templates within the LDA-1 / 2, as the case of CdSe / CdTe and Si/SiO2. For the case A1As/GaAs, we take the marriage of network parameters of semiconductor components and try an interface model alloys A1xGa1-x As / GaAs to study the variation of valence, conduction and bandgap as a function of composition x. In the AlN / GaN, we also studied the offsets with the contributions of the orbitals separately. In all cases the LDA-half led us to interesting results from simple models. The exploration of new frontiers of the method was necessary to decrease the dimensionality of the systems, the 3D (bulk) for 2D (interfaces) and then to 1D, ie, quantum _os (\"nanowires\"). Our study material for the ZnO was that, apart from the motivation coming from known applications in optoelectronics, presents challenges for bulk simulations with any method, and that was addressed with some success using the LDA-half earlier, and for wireless find interesting results in quantum triangular geometries that facilitated models. We calculate the bandgap and bulk ZnO nanowires passivated and not passivated with hydrogen using LDA and LDA-1/2 without spin polarization. The bandgap structures and strips as a function of the diameter of ano_o adjustments are calculated and decay functions for comparison were made by extrapolation of the bandgaps with experimental values. It was possible to compare our results with the bulk of wires, and predict a range of bandgaps that variaação can find experimental triangular ZnO nanowires. It was also made analysis of energy confinement in ZnO quantum wires, comparing LDA with LDA-1/2. Finally, we show the results of an opportunity to apply the method to a material with defects, newly discovered and promising, and with huge market potential in photocatalysis, the Ti1-O4N. Our work involved the application of LDA-1/2 to a very challenging problem, eg the generation of clean energy, specifically the separation of the water molecule for hydrogen production. The main challenge has been the difficulty of predicting bandgaps theoretically, in particular for large systems such as the model atomistic defects because of the high computational costs involved. These difficulties force the researchers to use adjustable parameters or semi-empirical methods, or other simplified models to accurately describe experimental results. This complicates the study of potentially efficient photocatalytic systems which have not yet been characterized or optimized. The LDA-1/2 is here validated for this class of materials, thus opening the opportunity to study more realistic and complex systems for more accurate calculations, particularly for clean energy generation. In particular, we modeled the structure of TiO2 in the rutile with substitutional nitrogen, whose electronic structure is still debated. It was the first application of the LDA-1/2 systems with some kind of defect, with excellent results for the new system Ti1-_O4N with Ti vacancies.

Abstract (sommario):
The wireless medium is a shared and limited resource. Current wireless standards always share the medium with Half-Duplex principle: the transmission and reception of signals are done in two separate time slots or two different frequency bands. Besides, the transceiver can only transmit and receive one signal at a time. This dissertation takes an alternate approach: Instead of sharing the medium with Half-Duplex principle, the entire licensed frequency band is shared for simultaneous transmission and reception, which we call Full-Duplex. Besides, the design concept for a wideband flexible radio transceiver can process two different types of signals at a time. To approach this goal, we use an active analog radio frequency self-interference cancellation (AARFSIC) method or a combination scheme of the AARFSIC and active digital self interference cancellation in time domain (ADSICT) to cancel the strong self-interference (SI) induced by the Full-Duplex principle. Based on the Full-Duplex radio, we propose a flexible Full-Duplex Dual-Band (FDDB) OFDM radio transceiver by combining it with a Dual-Band RF front-end. Building on these, we make three main contributions: We present an active self-interference cancellation (ASIC) scheme, which can cancel both the strong one-path and multi-path SI completely, based on the combination of the AARFSIC and DSICT. Next, we introduce the design and evaluation of a Full-Duplex OFDM radio, including the analysis and qualification of the impact of the thermal noise and phase noise on the system performance. Finally, we develop a FDDB OFDM radio that can work on two separate spectrum fragments. In order to eliminate the impact of the I/Q imbalance on the FDDB radio, a simple but practical digital I/Q imbalance estimation and compensation method is presented. The system level simulation conducted with ADS and Matlab software shows that this method can effectively compensate both high and low I/Q imbalance
