Abstract (sommario):
The article describes some aspects of the service of the famous statesman Nikolai Bakhtin (1796–1869), when he was a special assignment official under Prince Alexander Menshikov. In 1827–1834 Bakhtin was in the service of the Naval ministry, the management system of which was undergoing changes during this period. The study based on new archival sources reconstructs the circumstances of Bakhtin to serve in the Naval directorate from the War ministry and his activities as an official on special assignments under Menshikov. In addition to the facts of Bakhtin's biography, these circumstances can be interpreted as a reflection of the process of the formation of the maritime administrative apparatus during this period. The events of Bakhtin’s life and service are considered in the context of the processes of bureaucratization of naval management and relations with the key figure of these processes –– Prince Menshikov.

Abstract (sommario):
Although Bakhtin did not use special narratological terms, he was interested in narratological issues. The significance of Bakhtin’s thought is especially felt in three fields of narratology: the correlation between the author and narrator figure (according to Bakhtin between the “primary” and “secondary” authors); the problem of eventfulness; and, finally, the metalinguistic view on the nature of narrative expression. This paper explores the correspondences between the three domains of narratology and Bakhtin’s phenomenology of speech genres and authorship.

Abstract (sommario):
The problem of the reception of M. Bakhtin’s personality and ideas seems to be one of the most important in today’s Bakhtin Studies. We focus on the writers’ reception among the various forms of Bakhtin reception. By Bakhtin literary reception they mean the presentation of Bakhtin’s image as a literary character, the participation of Bakhtin himself in the literary and cultural life of Nevel, Vitebsk, Leningrad, Saransk and Moscow, the facts of the thinker’s specific relations with representatives of the Russian literary community in different periods of his life. Special attention is paid to the presentation of M. Bakhtin’s image in the literary works of K. Vaginov (“Satyr Chorus”), A. Losev (“The Woman-Thinker”) and in the letters of B. Pasternak. The letters of K. Fedin (the 1960s and early 1970s), containing assessments of M. Bakhtin’s work and personality, have been introduced into the scientific literature for the first time. We also analyze A. Beck’s attitude to Bakhtin’s works. The article concludes that the study of the writers’ reception of M. Bakhtin’s personality allows us to abandon a number of biographical myths and determine the real place of Bakhtin in the literary and intellectual life of the country in the 1920s and 1970s.

Abstract (sommario):
The author aims to outline the conceptualization of Mikhail Bakhtin's late works. Their essential moment is Bakhtin's specific attitude to works by Fyodor Dostoevsky and to literature as a special part of culture. In this connection, the author understands Bakhtin's philosophy as a philosophy of literature bordering on philosophical anthropology. In the article, using Bakhtin's writings, as well as a number of studies on his works, as material, the author intends to reconstruct the ontological basis of fiction, in the center of which lies the concept of grotesque Bakhtin developed in his book dedicated to Francois Rabelais. Despite the huge amount of literature on Bakhtin's oeuvre, there are no studies on his later works as a separate research space. This applies both to the corpus of texts, since part of the Bakhtin archive has not yet been published and lies in the manuscripts department of the Russian State Library, and to attempts to show the philosophical significance of Bakhtin's late writings by conceptualizing them and bringing them together into a separate intellectual phenomenon. The article attempts to analyze Bakhtin's later works through the prism of his attitude to Dostoevsky's works. The name of Bakhtin is not just associated with the name of Dostoevsky. The Russian philosopher revealed the ontology of Dostoevsky's works, and, since for Bakhtin Dostoevsky's works are the pinnacle of the development of literature, through Dostoevsky's works Bakhtin unfolds literature in its highest manifestation for us. The author substantiates the thesis that the understanding of Bakhtin's late works is based on the ontologization of grotesque, which Bakhtin himself indicates indirectly, not explicitly. The author also shows that Bakhtin sees literature, the subject matter of his research, as a purpose, as a special part of culture that reflects the ultimate embodiment of the human principle, and not an example in his theoretical constructions. Bakhtin's attitude to Dostoevsky is primarily reflected in his book about Dostoevsky in two editions. However, it would be wrong to reduce this attitude only to this book. In a broad sense, all of Bakhtin's philosophical works can be reduced to a certain hermeneutics of Dostoevsky due to the presence of a close and organic connection between concepts and ideas in Bakhtin's works, as well as the fact that Dostoevsky for Bakhtin is a key figure in his philosophical legacy. However, in the present article, based on a late interview, the author of the article reconstructs Bakhtin's thoughts about Dostoevsky that outline, among other things, an important topic in the field of Bakhtin's hermeneutics - the role of Dostoevsky's reader.

Abstract (sommario):
The philosopher M. Bakhtin occupies a unique place in the process of shaping of a new humanistic paradigm. Amid the 1960s crisis in the West, Bakhtin’s key concepts, from ‘carnival’ and ‘polyphony’ to ‘dialogism’, provided a foundation for a common communication code for the humanities, which helped participants of the dialogue to find their mutual points of interest. The 16th International Bakhtin Conference ‘Bakhtin in the Post-Revolutionary Era’, which took place in Shanghai in September 2017, prompted the author to ponder the modern state of international Bakhtin studies and identify certain trends, especially noticeable in the Chinese context of the studies. The multistage reception of his ideas in Russia and abroad reveals a changing treatment of his legacy, much in demand these days, which are typified by a crisis of the humanities. Bakhtin’s stance during and after the revolution, as well as his internal approval of evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, changes in social and cultural history, which are particularly relevant today, suggest that his ideas can be used in the context of polyphonic thinking and new, e. g. digital, technologies.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the article is to think over the Bakhtin’s role and the place of his ideas in the modern world. The reason for the authors’ reflection was the publication of the essays collection “Inspired by Bakhtin: Dialogical Methods” (2018). Its participants tried to demonstrate how Bakhtin’s dialogism was implemented in various fields of humanities. The material of the history and theory of literature, Russian postmodern prose, Plato’s dialogues, sociology, psychoanalysis, European cinema and architectural design shows the effectiveness of dialogic methods. The article underlines the sufficient freedom of the researchers in their dealing with Bakhtin’s ideas. Sometimes it leads to the noticeable distance from his initial attitudes. This situation reflects one of the trends not only in Bakhtin studies, but in the humanities in the West. The dialogue with Bakhtin in the book is presented in the article in the context of the analysis of Bakhtin methodological discourse, given in his fragments, sketches and notes. The authors’ conclusion that the book complies with the general trend of contemporary Bakhtin studies is confirmed by recently published books devoted to the study of Bakhtin’s heritage in literature, arts, psychology, philosophy of education and dialogical pedagogy.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents the results of the XVII International Bakhtin Conference held in Saransk (Russia) on July 5-10, 2021. The forum brought together over 100 participants from 22 countries and was held online. The 18 plenary lectures and more than 100 panels and online-discussions focused on the most important questions of the reception of Bakhtin’s heritage, and the influence of the thinker’s ideas on contemporary humanities. Presentations included works in the following areas: biography of Bakhtin, determining the place of his ideas in modern philology, philosophy and other social sciences, the theory and practice of education, and interdisciplinary research. This article analyses and contextualises the work of the conference against the background of the Bakhtin Forums of the 1980s and 2010s, which became an important part of the global Bakhtin Studies, as well as of the recent development of Bakhtin’s heritage in Russia and worldwide. The authors highlight the most important results of the last conference as supplementing and reconstructing Bakhtin’s biography, clarifying the details of the process of dialogical interaction of Bakhtin’s work with his contemporary ideas and the preceding traditions, defining the boundaries of Bakhtin’s influence on the humanities and the natural science, as well as the possibilities of integration of these disciplines under the “sign of Bakhtin”.

Abstract (sommario):
The article summarizes the interim results of the problem “Bakhtin under a mask”, the main of which is the final solution of Bakhtin question in the sense that the presumption of authorship for disputed texts now unambiguously passes to M.M. Bakhtin. As arguments for proving Bakhtin's attribution of the books “Freudianism”, “The Formal Method in Literary Criticism” and “Marxism and the Philosophy of Language” both numerous testimonies of Bakhtin himself and his contemporaries, and the results of text analysis of controversial books are cited. The logically grouped evidence clarifies Bakhtin's ethical and scientific position on this issue. An immanent study of disputed texts from the point of view of their content and style, on the one hand, and comparing them with authentic Bakhtin works, on the other hand, leads to the recognition of their semantic and stylistic unity, which presupposes the unity of authorship.

Any boom calls forth a backlash and a trashing - and Bakhtin has been trashed often, for many reasons. In this article I consider the recent biography of Bakhtin written by Aleksei Korovashko in the history of anti-Bakhtinistics, and attempt to evaluate the “Korovashko tactic”: where, in my view, it goes wrong, and what lessons we might learn from it in light of Bakhtin’s teaching (especially his theory of love). I then discuss two more productive approaches to criticizing Bakhtin: one devoted to Bakhtin and the body (Dick McCaw), the other to Bakhtin and the spirit (Mikhail Epstein).

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: the article concentrates on the understudied topic of M. Bakhtin’s role in the literary process of Mordovia, where the scholar spent almost 25 years (1936–1937, 1945–1969). By drawing on the published and archived materials, inscribed books from Bakhtin’s personal library and reports of the department that Bakhtin presided over, the author defines the scholar’s place in the literary life of Mordovia, analyses his pedagogical and scholarly activity as part of the literary process, demonstrates the role that Bakhtin played in the development of Mordovian literary studies. This approach allows the author to introduce a number of unknown or little-known archival documents, the fragments of memoirs of Bakhtin’s contemporaries and other materials which help to visualize the atmosphere of Bakhtin’s life and work in the latter 1940s–1960s. Objective: to characterize contexts of the long-standing dialogue between Bakhtin and the community of Mordovian writers, to demonstrate the scholar’s role in the literary life of Saransk and the republic. Research materials: documents from the Central State Archive of the Republic of Mordovia, inscribed books from the personal library of Bakhtin, reports of the department Bakhtin presided over, materials reflecting the cultural and literary life of Mordovia. Results and novelty of the research: the cultural and literary contexts of the Saransk period in Bakhtin’s life are reconstructed and problematized. Based on the analysis of the social and cultural-educational activities of the thinker, the character of the literary process in Mordovia, the intellectual culture itself and the role of Bakhtin in it are reinterpreted. Archival materials that have not previously been the subject of special research are introduced.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the methodological aspects of the use of M. M. Bakhtin’s terminological thesaurus in modern Dostoevsky studies. The principal focus is on the instrumental application of the typical “Bakhtin formulas”: polyphony, the concept of genres, the confessional character of Dostoevsky’s word, chronotope, context of understanding, menippea, etc. It is noted that some of them are used discretely, that is, outside of their systemic connections with Bakhtin’s heritage as a whole. To one degree or another, they are taken into account in line with Russian ethnopoetics, in which the Bakhtin problem is actualized in the Orthodox context of Russian culture; it is noted that “Bakhtin” serves as the connection between Dostoevsky and the religious and philosophical tradition. Despite the fact that the discourse of a number of works provokes a possible transition to Bakhtin’s context of understanding Dostoevsky, the “absence” of Bakhtin is also significant in them, along with his ritual quoting. Bakhtin’s legacy remains an important philosophical and cultural stage in the study of Dostoevsky in Russian literary studies.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractMikhail Bakhtin cannot be discussed without discussing his friends and collaborators forming the Bakhtin Circle. The name Bakhtin itself announces a polyphony of different voices and viewpoints, internally to Bakhtin’s own voice and externally, all evidencing the word’s capacity for dialogism and otherness, the possibility of cohabitation and interference among different voices in the same word, the propensity for participative listening, ultimately the inevitability of responsiveness/responsibility toward the other, that is, the other’s singularity. The name “Bakhtin” or, better, the expression “Bakhtin Circle,” offers a concrete perspective for a world constructed in terms of multiplicity, diversity, and hospitality toward the other. This essay presents some characteristic aspects of Bakhtinian philosophy, keeping account of the writings collected in the 2014 bilingual volume Opere 1919–1930, presented by the renowned Italian Bakhtin scholar Augusto Ponzio.

Abstract (sommario):
“The whole history of Russian thought during the Soviet period was a history with missing chapters”.1 One of such missing chapters is a history of the Soviet reception of the corpus of work created by Mikhail M. Bakhtin, Soviet thinker and literary critic (1895—1975). The history of the Soviet reception of Bakhtin’s ideas has not been written yet and there are no works on the subject. There is Zbinden’s book,2 which deals with research about some particular cases of Bakhtin studies in Canada and in French translations. Despite the fact that in the 1960–1980s the «theory of carnival» became, in the words of S.S. Averintsev, a «regular classic» and the subject of citation for any specialists in the humanities, the reception of Bakhtin’s ideas in the Soviet Union was not successful: all of his contemporaries and conversation partners could not come into proper contact with the Soviet thinker. The present working paper is an attempt to reconstruct one case from the history of the Soviet reception of Bakhtin’s heritage, using the works of Vladimir N. Turbin (1927—1993) as an example. The study examines Turbin’s books A Short While Before Aquarius: A Farewell to Epos and his articles from different years (including those published posthumously), relating to Bakhtin, his life, theories, ideas and books. All these works will answer the question why the Soviet reception of Bakhtinʼs heritage in the 1960–1970 did not take place, and why the book, which Turbin wanted to write about his teacher, has not been written.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes a lesser-known text of Mikhail Bakhtin’s “On Flaubert”. While this inquiry pays particular attention to the significance of Bakhtin’s carnivalesque reading of Rabelais for his reading of Flaubert, it also treats the fragment in the broader context of Bakhtin’s philosophy. The article argues that Bakhtin’s approach to Flaubert is apophatic in nature. For Bakhtin, The Temptation of Saint Anthony is the most important text of Flaubert, and through its ascetic aesthetic, he interprets all other novels of Flaubert. The significance of animals in Flaubert emerges as an important theme for Bakhtin, who believes the image of the beast constitutes the unconscious center of Flaubert’s thought. The topic of the beast leads Bakhtin to the theme of pity, which for him is fundamentally different from the sentimentalized and thus inevitably self-centered compassion.

Abstract (sommario):
Researchers repeatedly noted that M.M. Bakhtin’s works are characterized by integration of musical culture into theoretical discourse, which is expressed in his appeal to the conceptual sphere of musical art and use of musical terminology as an instrument of literary, aesthetic, and cultural analysis. However, when examining Bakhtin’s connection with music, researchers, as a rule, discuss “music in general”, without specifying which music Bakhtin used to listen. The paper discusses the phenomenon of “the musical world of Bakhtin”, including his music experience, personal and creative contacts with musicians. The authors find out musical sources of Bakhtin’s creative intuitions. Based on the study of Bakhtin’s collection of gramophone records (now located in the M. M. Bakhtin Center of the Mordovia State University), published and oral memories of people personally communicating with Bakhtin, and other sources, his individual musical preferences are identified, and the circle of his favorite composers and performers is determined. It is emphasized that the phenomenon of the “Bakhtin’s musical world” is a “marker” of his commitment to the tendency of interaction and synthesis of arts, intermediality, and the objectification of the idea of cultural synthesis, which was one of the prevailing philosophical and cultural intuitions of Russian symbolism.

Abstract (sommario):
Mikhail Bakhtin described a novelistic world bound to the reader's point of view and perception of reality. Albert Einstein's theory of relativity justified Bakhtin's elevation of the reader to a central position in his theory of the novel. This essay examines Bakhtin's engagement with Einsteinian relativity in the context of two of his most influential contributions to critical discourse—polyphony and the chronotope. Originating in the 1920s, Bakhtin's notion of polyphony was initially an expression of his Kantian mind-set. When Bakhtin reworked his formulation of polyphony in 1963 (having already broached the topic of literary spaciotemporality with the chronotope), Einstein had replaced Kant as Bakhtin's guiding intellectual paradigm. In advocating a relativistic model to explicate the literary world, Bakhtin aligned centuries of novelistic tradition with a distinctly modern worldview. His use of the epistemological possibilities inaugurated by twentieth-century physics allowed him to interpret centuries-old texts with an insightfulness available only to a post-Einsteinian reader.

Abstract (sommario):
The article reconstructs one of the episodes of M.M. Bakhtin’s scientific biography, connected with the reception of the thinker’s personality and ideas by domestic and Western structuralism. As the authors point out, traditionally Bakhtin’s position on structuralism in the 1960s and early 1970s is interpreted as a continuation of his anti-formalist attitudes of the second half of the 1920s and early 1930s. The result was the image of Bakhtin as a staunch opponent and critic of structuralism, seeing the latter as a continuation of “material aesthetics”. The archival documents presented in the article, especially fragments of Bakhtin’s correspondence with R. Barthes, L. Goldman, V.V. Ivanov, Yu. Lotman, and V. Kozhinov, the Bakhtin marginalia on the pages of his personal library journals, and books presented to Bakhtin by structuralist authors, provide grounds for a new perspective on this episode in Russian and European intellectual history. Despite the ambiguity of his attitude toward structuralism, Bakhtin perceived it with a sufficient degree of objectivity, which was expressed in his “Reply to the Question of the Editors of Novyi Mir” and in his working notes of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Bakhtin’s agreement to translate his article “Word in a Novel” in the French journal Langages in response to R. Barth’s proposal, his personal communication with Ivanov, Lotman, and others give the authors grounds to make a number of clarifications in Bakhtin’s scientific biography.

Abstract (sommario):
The article summarizes the first results of the work within the research project The Bakhtin Encyclopedia and presents the experience of understanding and interpreting the heritage of M.M. Bakhtin in an encyclopedic format. In the process of work, the research team outlined the approaches to the study of the thinker’s heritage as a multi-level system, a comprehensive description of the most important components of which should provide an in-depth perception and further interpretation of Bakhtin’s biography and his scholarly heritage as a whole. Describing what has been done, reflecting on the obtained results and determining the nearest goals and objectives, the author shows the perspective and heuristic value of the encyclopedic format for describing the biography and scholarly heritage of M.M. Bakhtin. The Bakhtin Encyclopedia is considered to be the first step towards the creation of the Bakhtin reference and information resource.

Abstract (sommario):
The article offers a detailed examination of Mikhail Bakhtin’s biography by A. Korovashko, which came out in The Lives of Remarkable People series [Zhizn’ zamechatelnykh lyudey, ZhZL] in 2017.M. Bakhtin’s life and legacy have always sparked keen interest among Russian and foreign scholars alike, but his biography still holds its secrets and, despite the efforts of M. Holquist and K. Clark, of S. and L. Konkin, N. Nikolaev, N. Pankov, I. Popova, and others, a comprehensive scholarly version is missing to this day. With his ideas permeating the global intellectual environment and his theories influencing the modern studies of human sciences, Bakhtin is a preeminent contemporary thinker. It is only natural, therefore, that his biography by A. Korovashko, entitled Mikhail Bakhtin, was published in the ZhZL series. In his attempt to offer his own view and interpretation of the scholar’s lifetime and the historical and cultural context of his research, Korovashko decided to debunk what he calls ‘the Bakhtin myth’ and undermine the so-called ‘Bakhtin industry’. However, his unusual manner of ironic narration and a penchant for literary reimagining of the subjects lead to the emergence of factual errors and inaccuracies, while the author’s rhetoric of demystification frustrates any professional and competent analysis of Bakhtin’s theories.

Abstract (sommario):
A review of Bakhtin in the Fullness of Time: Bakhtinian Theory and the Process of Social Education, Edited by Craig Brandist, Michael E. Gardiner, E. Jayne White and Carl Mika. L.: Routledge. 2020. 160 p. The review of the collection of articles Bakhtin in the Fullness of Time: Bakhtinian Theory and the Process of Social Education represents an analysis of the perspectives, main trends, and interpretations of key points, ideas, and concepts of M. M. Bakhtin in the contemporary theory and practice of Social Education. The book’s nine chapters are grouped within three problem areas, researched by the book’s contributors. This is, in the first place, a re-establishment of those philosophical and sociological sources that trace back to the roots of Bakhtin’s early views that had defined the nature of his responses to the challenges of his time in his early philosophical texts, books about Dostoevsky and books about bildungsroman. Another field of examination is Bakhtin's late dialogue with his contemporaries. Sometimes this dialogue is active and obvious, as it happens in the situation with the latest aesthetic and literary trends in Russia at the beginning of the 1920s. Sometimes this dialogue turns out to be ambiguous, therefore researchers can only guess how to reconstruct it, basing their views on the complementarity of Bakhtin’s ideas and Lev Vygotsky or Paulo Freire’s ones. An equally important aspect of this collection is a number of articles devoted to how Bakhtin's theory is transformed into "classroom practice", whether it concerns the use of dialogue and its capabilities in interaction with foreigners, providing educational opportunities to the most economically vulnerable segments of South African society, or communication with preschoolers in kindergarten. The authors of the book managed to create a convincing picture of how Bakhtinian theory is becoming one of the most important elements of contemporary theory and practice of education. At the same time, not only Bakhtinian ideas, primarily the concepts of dialogue, polyphony, carnival, and chronotope, are important, but also that free polyphony, which puts into effect any creative practice.

Abstract (sommario):
The process of reception of M. M. Bakhtin’s scientific heritage over the past 25 years is analyzed in the review article. The focus of the authors is on identifying the stages and main directions, trends and achievements of modern Russian Bakhtin studies, determining the prospects for further research. The relevance of the review lies in the need for an objective reconstruction of the process of studying the ideas and heritage of M. M. Bakhtin in Russia and abroad, primarily over the past 25 years. It is noted that the works of M. M. Bakhtin are the most cited in scientific literary criticism and Bakhtin studies have become an independent branch of interdisciplinary research. The analysis revealed the role in the development of Russian Bakhtin studies of such a phenomenon as a collection of works by a scientist, Bakhtin studies journals and publications, publications of leading researchers. Conclusions are made that in 1996—2020 Russian Bakhtin studies have reached a fundamentally new level in the development of the scientist’s heritage, made a significant contribution to the study of his key ideas and concepts, completed a preliminary reconstruction of his scientific biography, carried out a systematic description of his terminological language and scientific theory as a whole, indicated the points of the necessary dialogue between Russian scientists and foreign colleagues.

Abstract (sommario):
The concept of dialogue is a central element of Bakhtin’s writings, whereas Wittgenstein’s references to dialogue are generally in the negative vein. However, there does not seem to be another modern philosopher who has actually employed the dialogic method. But Wittgenstein’s dialogic texts also include monologic aspects, such as sensation and private transition. Bakhtin, by contrast, sometimes blurs the boundaries between dialogue in language and dialogue as a criterion for literary value. The article shows how Wittgenstein helps clarify the role of the monological in Bakhtin’s dialogic approach and how Bakhtin can facilitate a better understanding of the dialogicity in Wittgenstein.

Abstract (sommario):
The personality and work of the outstanding Russian thinker M.M. Bakhtin (1895-1975) have recently become an increasingly important subject of scholarly attention. Despite the existence of many works devoted to philosophical, culturological, aesthetic problems of his works, the question of the religious component of Mikhail Bakhtin's heritage is almost completely ignored. The British researcher Ruth Coates sets herself the task of filling this gap. In her monograph Christianity in Bakhtin, she presents the results of her analysis of both Bakhtin's own religious views and those of Bakhtin. Bakhtin, as well as the religious motifs in his works. This monograph was published by Cambridge University Press in 1998. The present publication opens a series of articles, the purpose of which is to acquaint the Russian-speaking reader with the contents of the most important sections of this study.

Abstract (sommario):
The article provides a critical comparison of two independent interpretations of F. M. Dostoevsky: from the side of M. Bakhtin and from the side of Rene Girard. Both authors have created coherent ways of understanding and reading the literary heritage of the writer in the perspective of their own understanding of the history of literature and the intellectual history of mankind as such. Dostoevsky is significant for Bakhtin not simply as an illustration of the applicability of some of his own ideas within the framework of literary criticism. Bakhtin sees Dostoevsky as an innovator in the development of the menippea genre and an unprecedented dialogization of literature. At the same time, without Dostoevsky, the movement of literature postulated by Girard towards the embodiment of the Gospel revelation would be incomplete. The incompleteness of Girard or Bakhtin without Dostoevsky (with all the reservations) is not fundamental. Without Dostoevsky, history as such fundamentally changes for Girard and for Bakhtin. The apparent incomparability of the authors makes it possible to read Dostoevsky differently. From the context of Girard, the meaning of Bakhtin's works and, inevitably, the meaning of laughter and dialogue (polyphony) in history are significantly transformed. On the other hand, the ways of including Dostoevsky in the image of history created by Girard, independently of Bakhtin, also run into difficulties.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article an attempt is made to place Bakhtin’s case in the context of the Soviet 1960s with their specific mental world. The study question is why this almost forgotten figure of the 1920s has become a proper man in a proper place in time of transition from Stalin’s Great Fear to Khrushchov’s liberalization with its continuation till 1968 and how this resurrection from the dead occured. The virtues and scientific significance of Bakhtin’s works are doubtless and undeniable. But there is something else that helps to explain Bakhtin’s phenomenon and its popularity. His readers mentality determines the fate of books and the spreading of ideas. The sixties witnessed the unprecedented success of Bakhtin’s books. They changed the vocabulary of humanities and the mode of thinking in the generation of so-called Thaw. Bakhtin became one of the most influential figures of the sixties and greatly stimulated the emergence of the new trend known as culturology. Bakhtin’s Rabelais was a special success. This text can be read on different levels and interpreted in many ways. Its content combines such genres as literary criticism, the history of culture, and philosophy. The readers of the sixties paid special attention to Bakhtin’s vision of popular culture with its central image of carnival and were especially sensitive and receptive for the concept of Laughing Renaissance as a spiritual twin of Thaw which had Marxist roots, not Bakhtin’s. Thanks to the complexity of the text’s possible interpretation, Bakhtin was mistakenly considered as an ideologist of Thaw, and his Rabelais – as an intellectual product of this historical moment full of optimism, great expectations and hopes. Bakhtin was read by the generation of the 1960s in accordance with its mentality, its pursuit of a new form of “Socialism with human face” when left and even Marxist ideas dominated in the non-conformist discourse. But all of that had little in common with authentic Bakhtin who could share neither this philosophical worldview nor the illusions of the 1960s. The view of laughter as a kind of social therapy and as a means of emancipation in society was far from Bakhtin’s. He fully realized the demonic nature of carnival and saw it as his ambivalent ally from hell hostile to every kind of ideocracy. His readers who had invented Renaissance as a prototype of their time and the first Thaw in history misunderstood the inner intentions of Bakhtin himself. But doing this quite unconsciously, they gave the first and triumphant life for the outstanding scientific and philosophical text on Rabelais written by the person of a damaged life from the past.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes the phenomenon of boundary in the philosophy of M.M. Bakhtin. The thesis that the boundary in the concept of M.M. Bakhtin can be considered as a dialogue in which each remark of the participants presents a full-fledged questioning about being, requiring individual responsibility and correlation of meanings. The boundary in Bakhtins theory is considered from the perspective of participatory thinking, as the moment of transition in a responsible act in which a person affirms being-co-being. The perspective of considering the boundary as an event (event) the point of meaning in a situation of context-event motivation and self-determination of a person in the world of culture is shown. The article outlines the potential of the boundary as one of the significant concepts in Bakhtins anthropological ontology and modern philosophy.

Abstract (sommario):
This article sets itself a twofold task. On the basis of recently published scholarship, it wishes to revisit the history of Bakhtin’s discovery in Russia and the West since the 1960s; but it also intends to offer a tentative answer to the question: ‘What did Bakhtin discover as a thinker’? The two dimensions, captured in the ambiguity of the genitive — ‘Bakhtin’s discovery’ — are closely interrelated. In a very significant sense, what we perceive to be Bakhtin’s discoveries as a thinker and a theorist is a dynamic target rather than a fixed apparatus. As I try to demonstrate through a plethora of examples, Bakhtin’s discoveries and the lessons we draw from them have been articulated differently at different historical junctures and in different cultural settings; the Bakhtin we see is a fluctuating image, resulting from superimposed perspectives involving growth, modification, loss, and a complex adjustment of meaning, as his body of writing travels across time and traditions and meets inherited patterns of reasoning. Bakhtin’s discoveries are thus not a reliable supply of knowledge or wisdom; they rather derive from the elusive, sometimes blurred, and never quite finished work of mediation and translation. Equally important, the optics we apply towards Bakhtin in discerning his contributions as a thinker is affected by the stories of his discovery at home and abroad. Processes that look as awkward time-lag or distortion are often marks of intense appropriation and a high impact factor in disguise. Over time, we realise that the very narratives employed in telling and re-enacting the story of Bakhtin’s discovery in Russia and the West are saturated with the cultural and ideological heteroglossia which he came to analyse in his writings. In tracing some of these narratives, I hope to arrive gradually at a Bakhtin, whose legacy is the function of multiple historical articulations, a thinker in transit, a theorist subject to dialogue.

Abstract (sommario):
The article discusses the intermedial transfer of the concept of polyphony in Mikhail Bakhtin’s and Leo Spitzer’s studies of Dostoevsky and Proust from the late 1920s. There are plenty of good reasons to compare the two scholars’ works. Firstly, Spitzer’s stylistics was of key importance to Bakhtin throughout his scientific career. Secondly, there is a correlation between the methods for studying Proust’s and Dostoevsky’s novels, which Bakhtin considered as the pinnacle of the European and Russian novel, respectively. The stylistic revolution of the novel anticipated not only the development of 20th-c. prose, the polyphonic novel and stylistic perspectivism, but also the trajectory of theoretical innovations, the study of the dialogue between the Self and the Other, as well the verbal symphonization of the author/narrator’s outer and inner Self. Once polyphony was extrapolated into the field of the novel, the problem of the spoken word and oral genres became more compelling. From the late 1930s until the early 1940s, Spitzer and Bakhtin independently set out to study the genre of ‘shouts’ (cri): Spitzer in Proust’s The Prisoner, and Bakhtin in Rabelais’s novel and Russian literature. Bakhtin’s short theoretical essay on the genre of ‘shouts’ in a Russian town square was discovered by the author of this article and is published here for the first time.

Abstract (sommario):
Literary world continued to face a clash of opinion for long as to whether the popular genre, the novel, should be regarded as representing artistic literary heritage. As literary scholarship often traced a line separating poetic discourse from the novelistic discourse, readers as well as scholars were in a state of dilemma whether to recognize the novel as artistic genre. However, with authors like DH Lawrence and critics like Mikhail Bakhtin, the confusion no longer needs to hound us. This article is an attempt to see why and how the novelistic discourse is fit enough tobe considered artistic discourse and the novel an artistic genre of literature. As a methodology to look into the issue, scholarly perspectives forwarded by Mikhail Bakhtin and DH Lawrence have been taken into consideration. Bakhtin’s concept of ‘heteroglossia’ and Lawrence’s ‘wholeness of life’ have been adopted as the basic theoretical tool while the textual references are mainly based on their essays entitled “Discourse in the Novel” and “Why the Novel Matters,” respectively. The article concludes that Bakhtin's appreciation of novelistic discourse as something that enabled the "representation of heteroglossia…," and Lawrence's description of the novel as the “book of life” are both equally potent scholarly defenses establishing the novel as artistic genre.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes Bakhtin’s 1944 notes on Flaubert. Under discussion is, first, some general background of Bakhtin’s philosophical and scientific methodology as expressed in the notes, secondly, the notes themselves. Bakhtin’s views on Flaubert and the novel of the 19th century are re-presented in connection with the Russian thinker’s theories of the “grotesque realism” and “novelization”as opposed to the “ideological culture of the new times”. The article discusses some principal methodological difficulties of Bakhtinian approach to literary texts as expressed in his notes on Flaubert. In contrast to most philosophical approaches to literature, Bakhtin always treats any text, in his own expression, “in the liminal spheres” of different disciplines, that is, as both a philosopher and literary critic, a theorist and a historian of literature and culture. In these notes this specificity of the Bakhtinian methodology is expressed drastically, but in principal it is quite typical to his thinking “on the borders”. In the subsequent parts of the article Bakhtin’s approach to Flaubert’s “realism” is commented on, from the point of view of those elements of his artistic vision and his world view, which, according to Bakhtin, are not congruous with the concept of the so-called “critical realism”. These elements, Bakhtin implies, belong not so much to the classical novel of the 19th century, but, rather, to what he calls “grotesque realism” before the new times and in the 20th century. These elements are: mutual reversal of “short” and “long” (or “great” time in the images of the day, Flaubert’s artistic opposition to the “straightforwardness” of the idea of “progress” typical for the European Enlightenment and the modernity at large., the artist’s interest in the “elemental life” of human beings and animals. These and some other elements characteristic of Flaubert’s art and ideology, Bakhtin treats as if from within “creative consciousness” of the author.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. The creation of a scientific biography of M. M. Bakhtin (1895–1975) is an urgent task of the modern humanities. There are many “blank spots” and inaccuracies in the biographies of the thinker. One of the most noticeable gaps is the extremely scarce and contradictory biographical information about his wife, E. A. Bakhtina (nee Okolovich). The article sets the task of verifying the biographical information about her given by other researchers by comparing already known sources and introducing new ones into scientific circulation. Materials and Methods. The study is of a historical-biographical nature. Research material: unpublished documents from the personal archive of M. M. Bakhtin; printed historical sources of the XX century (“Commemorative books” and other reference publications of the Vitebsk province); oral memoirs of people who communicated with E. A. Bakhtina during the Saransk period of her life recorded by the author in the 1990s – 2000s; scientific and popular science publications of a biographical nature about M. M. Bakhtin and representatives of his Circle. Basic methods and approaches: historical-and-cultural approach, comparative historical method (including comparative and correlative analysis). Results. It was revealed that many of the widely disseminated data about E. A. Bakhtina are inaccurate or generally do not correspond to reality. The introduction of new sources into scientific circulation made it possible to correct the date (year, day, month) and place of her birth, to determine the places of her study and work in different periods, to clarify and expand information about her parents (full name, place of residence and work, position, rank, estate, property status). Discussion and Conclusion. The results obtained contribute to solving the complex problem of creating a scientific biography of M. M. Bakhtin, in particular, they make adjustments to the ideas that have developed in science about the Vitebsk, Leningrad and Kustanai periods of his life, about the sequence of some events which happened to him at that time and about cause-and-effect connections between them.

Abstract (sommario):
While much has been written about Bakhtin's later writings, most notably Rabelais and his World, little attention has been paid to his early manuscripts written in the mid-1920s. In this article Dick McCaw compares Bakhtin's early philosophical ideas about authorship and Stanislavsky's theory about how an actor creates a character. Bakhtin argues that actors can only be authors when they remain outside the character. He agrees that there is a need for empathy, but that this moment of co-experiencing with the character is followed by a return to oneself. Although this would seem to fly in the face of Stanislavsky's demand for the actor's empathetic identification with their role, McCaw concludes that both writers agreed that there was a necessary doubleness in the consciousness of the actor. This article develops ideas first considered in McCaw's PhD, ‘Bakhtin's Other Theatre’ (Royal Holloway, University of London, 2004) and now being reworked as a book on Bakhtin and the theatre of his time. Dick McCaw is a Senior Lecturer at Royal Holloway, and has written With an Eye for Movement (2006) and edited the Laban Sourcebook (2011).

Abstract (sommario):
A constant vision in Mikhail Bakhtin's works: polyphonic dialogue, this above all in the novel, but his love for theatre should not be neglected. Consequently, a central focus in Bakhtin's reflections is the polyphonic novel which he first identifies in Dostoevsky's novels. Bakhtin establishes a close relation between the novel, popular culture and carnival, evidencing the carnival component of novelistic discourse, therefore of life. Moreover, as he recounts in his 1973 conversations with Victor Duvakin, his interest in the novel overlapped with theatre, in particular the Moscow Art Theatre. In Bakhtin and Theatre, Dick McCaw relates Bakhtin's vision of art and life to theatre as visualized by Stanislavksy, Meyerhold and Grotowski, each of whom operated a “revolution” in their own original terms comparable to the so-called “Bakhtinian revolution” in philosophy of language and literary criticism. With the difficult socio-political events of the time on the background, this essay explores important aspects of the real dialogue between these three masters of the theatre and of the ideal dialogue established between the latter and Bakhtin, thereby creating a special perspective on theatre with special reference to the Bakhtinian concepts of “polyphony” and “dramatization”. Overall are evidenced, for the quality of life, the importance of such values as dialogism, otherness, participative unindifference, creativity which also emerge as characteristics that specify the artwork, whether novelistic or theatrical, thereby showing how art and life are vitally interrelated and capable of enhancing each other.

Abstract (sommario):
In the article, the author analyzes methodological approaches to the study of the concept of historical responsibility, comparing the German tradition of study (H. Arendt, T. Adorno) with the voluntary actions ontology of M.M. Bakhtin 's. The German tradition, influenced by the thinking of World War II, emphasizes the perception of responsibility in the context of the relationship with guilt, which raises a substantial question about the nature of responsibility and its boundaries. In particular, H. Arendt formulates the concept of banality of evil, focusing on the disappearance of internal perception of responsibility, but does not solve the question of the origins of such feeling. The Russian religious tradition, presented by M.M. Bakhtin, allows to propose a way to solve the issues raised due to the identification of ontological grounds of individual responsibility. Nevertheless, M.M. Bakhtin conclusions are also important for solving the problem of collective responsibility. Bakhtin addresses responsibility as an ontological characteristic of human existence, opposing its freedom. Responsibility manifests itself in acts, but ontologically precedes a separate action performed by a person. The role of the act is that it allows the person himself to understand the burden of responsibility and act on these prerequisites. The transfer of the Bakhtins methodology from individual to collective responsibility makes it possible to link the moment of its occurrence not to public recognition, but to the very fact of the individual 's entry into a certain community. The ontological integrity of the individual also acquires a social dimension, not only synchronic but also diachronic. According to the author, the application of the Bakhtins methodology in the field of social research makes it possible to consider problems of historical responsibility in the context of more fundamental philosophical questions about the relationship between individual and collective identity, the dynamics of identity, the combination of regularity and variability in human behavior.
