Abstract (sommario):
The liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry in Australia has a very large installed asset base that is highly automated. This paper explores established, emerging and experimental automations that could materially impact human work in existing LNG facilities. The focus is on automations that assist with physical interventions on the built asset. Riley’s method for assessing the level of automation is used on current and emerging automations in the industry. Use cases demonstrate that as automation increases, the primary focus of the human becomes one of system design, monitoring and intervention. The changing role of the human in this age of automaton has important implications for the development of human work skills for the future: with increasing automation, the nature of work will change. In the future (1) field workers need to supervise and maintain robots, (2) functional specialists need to define and debug robot instruction sets, and (3) system designers need to master the opportunities and challenges in an exciting new field: the robot-human-interface.

Abstract (sommario):
The next decade will see a rapid increase in the prevalence of partial vehicle automation, specifically conditional automation (i.e., SAE level 3; SAE, 2018 ). In conditional automation, the expectation is that the user is still receptive to takeover and can disengage while the automation is active, but as the automation approaches its operational limits, or the end of its operational design domain, it issues a request to intervene and the user is expected to retake control. A human–machine interface (HMI) that can safely and effectively transition control is therefore very important. This simulator study investigated how features of the HMI design, specifically feedback about the confidence (i.e., current capability) of the automation influenced transition of control. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions, which received varying amounts of visual and auditory feedback regarding the automation’s confidence. Findings suggest 3-stage auditory-visual feedback about the automation’s confidence may improve subsequent takeover performance compared to 3-stage visual and a control group without feedback. This research demonstrates the potential value of providing more insight into automated feature performance in conditional automation.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Over the years, many organizations have attempted to automate the Incident Command System (ICS). These attempts have ranged from computerizing T-cards to a nationwide spill operations system. Over time, these systems have had varying degrees of success. While certain inherent reasons exist for not automating ICS, they are outweighed by the tremendous potential of successful automation. The need to produce documentation, the integration of ICS sections, and the rapid change of information all lend themselves to automation. Successful ICS automation does not start with computerizing ICS forms. The hey to automating ICS is to automate both ICS and response processes. In a response effort, many separate and distinct processes occur daily. The requisitioning of resources, the planning and application of the response organization, cost accounting, and the development of an Incident Action Plan (IAP) occur many times during an incident. This paper describes a framework for automating and integrating these processes. This framework offers organizations a road map for successful ICS automation. The poster presentation includes a software demonstration that illustrates the benefits of integrated automation.

Abstract (sommario):
Displaying both the strategy that information analysis automation employs to makes its judgments and variability in the task environment may improve human judgment performance, especially in cases where this variability impacts the judgment performance of the information analysis automation. This work investigated the contribution of providing either information analysis automation strategy information, task environment information, or both, on human judgment performance in a domain where noisy sensor data are used by both the human and the information analysis automation to make judgments. In a simplified air traffic conflict prediction experiment, 32 participants made probability of horizontal conflict judgments under different display content conditions. After being exposed to the information analysis automation, judgment achievement significantly improved for all participants as compared to judgments without any of the automation’s information. Participants provided with additional display content pertaining to cue variability in the task environment had significantly higher aided judgment achievement compared to those provided with only the automation’s judgment of a probability of conflict. When designing information analysis automation for environments where the automation’s judgment achievement is impacted by noisy environmental data, it may be beneficial to show additional task environment information to the human judge in order to improve judgment performance.

Office automation systems have become an essential tool for the operation of the modern office. With the emphasis of a modern office being placed on efficiency and ease of communication, office automation systems have become the backbone of successful businesses. COSNET is a prototype office automation system designed and implemented at the Department of the University of Cape Town and runs on Personal Computers that are linked to a NCR UNIX TOWER, which acts as the host. This dissertation investigates the different facilities supported by some of the office automation systems compared in this thesis, and describes the COSNET features. This prototype office automation system supports many of the facilities that are supported by large office automation systems. COSNET allows the user to define any MS-DOS based editor or word processor, and uses a simple editor for the creation of mail. The electronic filing facility allows documents to be created, filed, retrieved and deleted, and thus provides the users with the necessary features for document exchange. A user may set access permissions to each of his documents and may grant other users either read or write access to a specific document. The mail facility lets the user read, file, forward, delete and print a message, and supports classification of mail. A calendar facility is used as an electronic diary and stores all the user's schedules. These schedules may be viewed in either daily, weekly and monthly display modes. Read and write access to the calendar can be set by the user, in order to allow other users to manipulate his schedules. Any MS-DOS based application software can be added to COSNET. This facility allows the COSNET user to configure the office automation system to simulate the office environment. COSNET thus supports most of the necessary features required by an office automation system.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis a method for selecting test cases for test automation is developed and evaluated. Existing methods from the literature has been reviewed and modified resulting in the proposed method, a decision tree containing 23 factors grouped into 8 decision points. The decision tree has been used and evaluated in an industrial setting. The economic benefits were calculated with return on investment and the organisational benefits were measured in a survey at a software producing company. The result was that automated tests, selected with the decision tree, provided economic benefits after 0.5 to 4 years, these tests were also found leading to 3 organisational benefits: less human effort when testing, reduction in cost and allowing for shorter release cycles.

Abstract (sommario):
Newspapers are often bundled and packet on pallets to secure transport. Packing thebundles on pallets are often done with an automatic palletizer. For reliable operation, the bundle needed to have a correct position and orientation on the infeed conveyor.Wrong orientation can happen when the bundle is pushed from conveyor to thepalletisers conveyor. The main to reasons is wrong timing that leads to rotation of thebundle and to high pushing force that leads to tumbled bundles. The goal of thisproject is to make a prototype of a system that automatically adapts the pressure andsignal when to push using two laser sensors. One sensor sends a digital signal if laserbreaks, the other measure distance, e.g. bundle hight. The software was developed onan Arduino Uno board, and two interface board was made for voltage levelconversions. The prototype system managed to change pressure for different bundlesizes and timed the pushing signal correctly.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Automation is intended to improve overall building performance. Building Automation Systems (BAS) are attractive and popular due to their promise of increased operational effectiveness. BAS can be optimized and a well-designed and well-implemented BAS is expected to increase a buildings overall appeal and value as a result of improvement to its performance. In order to improve the level of automation in buildings, a measurement tool in the form of a performance index is needed. The goal of this research is to quantify a buildings level of automation-performance. The specific objective is to develop an Automation Performance Index (API) model for evaluating the extent of a buildings automation-performance. A methodology is outlined with ten tasks to accomplish the goals of this research and a criterion for each task is described. An extensive literature research and expert survey are performed to identify the key parameters that influence the performance of BAS. Seminars related to the building automation and commissioning fields were also attended to obtain the views of practitioners, manufacturers experts, as well as scholars in the field of building automation and performance commissioning. A Delphi method of research approach is conducted through a series of interviews and surveys of industry and academia experts. The feedback from experts and the research from literature, industry and academic resources are combined, classified and categorized for identification of significant parameters around which Automation Performance Index (API) model can be defined.

Abstract (sommario):
The German joint project GALILEOnautic aims to develop systems for autonomous navigation and optimised manoeuvring of vessels cooperating in areas with high safety and efficiency requirements, such as harbours or narrow waterways. In the conception of this project, the SAE levels of the automotive industry were applied for classification of intended levels in automation of already being used manoeuvring vessels. It fairly soon became apparent that the conditions in development of new autonomous road vehicles and the appropriate infrastructure are significantly different in comparison to adaption of navigation and manoeuvring of watercrafts which are part of a complex transport network. Therefor and in relation to the few orientating guidelines addressing autonomous maritime applications, a specific concept for manoeuvring automation in high safety areas was developed. It defines the automation levels towards autonomous shipping considering the current practice and the technical equipment on such vessels, the legal framework for automatic shipping as well as the requirements for integrating automatic manoeuvring in the traditional shipping traffic. The contribution introduces this automation concept and the necessary infrastructure for each level. Additionally, the results of the first project phase are presented. It implies the essential sensor equipment and subsequent data fusion to describe completely the dynamic ship motion and to recognise the close surrounding of the vessel. A hybrid control scheme is applied including feedforward and feedback modules. The control approach is illustrated by interfered encounter situations in ship handling simulator and for unmanned surface vehicles. The paper gives a prospect on the future investigations for higher manoeuvre automation.

The word automation is automatic control of operating devices with minimal or reduced human efforts. Influence of wireless technology is growing day by day. In today’s world, wireless technology doing significant role in the automation. It means automation makes technology free from human interruption. Home automation is one of the technology emerging these days. To make it more effective and efficient, cost is reduced by low cost communication technology like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi. Bluetooth is wireless technology to use in home automation. It is no operational cost technique, common in use and working in range up to 100 meters [2]. Bluetooth which is mainly used for data exchange, add new features to smartphones. With help of android application we are able to connect and control household appliances and provide security to handicapped, old people.

Abstract (sommario):
Automation of production processes is crucial for improving efficiency and reducing manual labor in the manufacturing industry. SolidCam facilitates automation through various tools such as Automatic Feature Recognition (AFR) and IMachining that identifies and extracts machining features from CAD models, eliminating the need for manual feature programming. The software's toolpath optimization algorithms automatically generate the most efficient toolpaths, reducing machining time, minimizing tool wear, and improving surface finish. This paper presents an improved virtual simulation methodology of the milling process. The process begins with defining the toolpath and determining how to create paths that link to each other within SolidCam. With IMachining, automatic path detection is enabled, after which the tool that needs to be used is selected. When the path is selected, the processing method is determined and at the end the G code is generated which shows the coordinates for milling and additional operations if they are selected. It is also linked to the tool list that is passed on to the operators. Benefits using this kind of automation are discussed and compared with the traditional approach without using automated processes.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract At present the manufacturing process throughout the hydraulic-hose assembly industry consists of manual operations. A study was conducted to determine the technical feasibility and costs of automating such a manufacturing plant. This paper describes the two automation concepts that were developed. One employs a robot to transfer hoses between workstations, and the other employs a rotary indexing table. Both concepts employ common linear-positioning fixtures controlled by a programmable logic controller to provide necessary hose manipulations at each workstation. A design for a hose-gripper assembly to contain each hose throughout the manufacturing process was developed, as well as schemes for changing the design of current production machinery to meet automation requirements. Production rate and cost estimates of each automation concept are presented.
